HNRS 101 is also known as SCOM 101 in this and the previous case, just to let you know. Teitelbaum, or Jeremy as he told us to call him, is a very good teacher. Class was fun, and I learned a whole lot. I would definitely recommend him.

This is a GE speech class. Almost the entire class is taken up by student speeches. On the offweeks Teitelbaum had easy to understand lectures. The bottomline is you should pay special attention to follow the format of the speech because grading speeches in inherently finicky. Don't forget to use good sources and practice your speech beforehand (preferrably in an empty classroom). This means DON'T WRITE YOUR SPEECH THE NIGHT BEFORE!

This class was completely non-stressful, and Teitelbaum is very laidback professor. He is pretty picky about your speeches, but the grading is quite fair and the final is a measly 50 multiple-choice. Do watch the time limit on speeches, however. I went over and was majorly penalized, which is the only reason I got a B. Overall, it should be easy to get an A.

This isn't exactly the hardest class but it is the most annoying one. teitlebuam shows almost no emotion whatsoever and is extremely quite. On your speeches he will right down a few comments on what you did wrong but not much and nothing on advice on how to do things better. You never hear him give a speech or demonstrate. Its almost impossible to know what he's thinking. With only one test at the end(final) its hard to know what's gonna be on it but it isn't that hard.

Teitelbaum knows his stuff and explains it fairly well. There's only one test (the final), and if you payed attention it's pretty easy. However, he seems to grade somewhat arbitrarily, and his comments aren't always very helpful. Even so, he's a good professor and it's a relatively easy class.

Despite what others say this professor tells you just what he wants. If you follow his way of creating a speech you will do well. He wants everyone to do well. His grading is more then fair. The points are weighted at the end of the quarter but that is fine because you will get more comfortable and do better. His final is fair and covers course material. He does not try to trick you, I did not even unwrap my book and I got an A-. All I can say though is if you are looking not to go to class this may not be your best bet, but what class is?

The class is really straightforward: pay attention in lectures and be prepared for your speeches. We give speeches about every other week. During speeches you come to class and write notes on 3x5's with feedback for the speaker. On the off-weeks he lectures (they're easy to follow & mostly written on the board..) almost straight out of the book - so the reading's hardly necessary. Speeches take the most work.. my advice is to make them well-organized and to the teachcer's format. If he gives you any suggestions after class or an office hours GO WITH THEM, as he a really finiky grader; REALLY. The only written test is the final, which is pretty easy if you pay attention in lectures - m/c, short answer, outlining.

Having a quarter with Teitelbaum was interesting to say the least. He started out as a very kind-seeming man, but to my surprise, as the quarter progressed his personality got more and more nasty every day. Putting that aside, the way he grades the class makes no sense at all. The final grade is based on how well students do on three speeches, a group project and a paper. However, the final speech, the group project and the paper are worth almost the entire grade and those three assignments are due pretty much simultaneously at the end of the quarter. So if you're a procrastinator, beware: this is not the class for you!

Here it is short and sweet: This guy grades tough, makes his students do a ton of work, and does not care for his students. I learned little to nothing in his 102 class, yet spent most of my time preparing for his assignments. Try to avoid his class. If you are stuck in his 102, make sure you get along well with your group and spend time researching for speeches/papers. I usually get A's, but he gave me a B.

I sincerely don't recommend this teacher. He is arrogant, and that affects the way he grades and teaches. He is not nearly as knowledgeable as he assumes, and will make you jump through unimportant and pathetic hoops that do not improve your learning skills--only make it hard to get an A in a joke of a class. He is a total pompous douche in and out of class, clearly his little man syndrome and lack of a PhD make him forsake educational substance in lieu of his ego. This wasn't a hard class, content wise. Take any other COMS teacher if you value the next ten weeks of your life.

this man is a crazy person... he is the moodiest person on the planet. He is condescending and disrespectful. He doesnt consider giving you a good grade if he doesnt like your topic, and if he feels your sources arent credible, you will receive a C at best. The problem with that is the fact that he sees any website (even govt websites)as not credible. He wants our sources to not have a bias... but the pdf files he outs up and expects us to learn from are written and copyrighted by HIM... does it get anymore biased? Also, he expects you do complete a huge research paper, a 7-9 minute speech, a group project, and a take home final of essay questions with each answer having to be 1-4 paragraphs. The questions he asks on the final directly correlate with the pdf files he outs up... since hes the one that wrote the pdf files, he is extremely biased in his grading.. its better to just agree with him rather than disagree, because he wont bother hear your side. In short... teitelbaum is a ridiculous teacher.. if youre hoping for an easy or even reasonable GE dont take this class.. hes certifiably insane and i really hope he quits.

If you love doing research and a lot of it then I would take him. His class doesn't seem hard in the beginning, in fact we played games some of the days, however he is a very tough grader on the research paper and final speech. This was more of an English class than speech class ... he acts like a know-it-all and does not seem to enjoy teaching. I would avoid taking this teacher for coms and would recommend coms 101 instead of coms 102.

Teitelbaum starts off the quarter with a friendly attitude, giving you the impression that he cares about student success and understands some people are better public speakers than others. HOWEVER, do not be fooled! We wasted 5 weeks out of the quarter working on one speech, and had to cram 2 speeches (one worth 50 points), a research paper (which he doesn't explain in class at all), and a huge group project and presentation in the remaining 5 weeks of the quarter. His grading is the most absurd thing I've ever come across; it's completely biased and contradictory. If he doesn't like your sources, no matter how many you have, you will not get a good grade. He looks for every possible way to knock points off your grade, even if it means contradicting himself in the process! This class caused me so much unnecessary stress to the point where it made me ill. If you can handle a lot of work AND tough criticism, then you'll survive. This is one of those GE classes where the teacher doesn't believe in A's, and also doesn't believe that you have work in other classes.

Teitelbaum starts out the quarter seeming like a nice and funny guy, and the first two speeches are fairly easy. But around week five or six, he turns on you, becoming pompous and condescending. The second half of the quarter involves a 7-9 minute persuasive speech, a 6-8 page research paper/interview, a huge group project with a final presentation, and a long take-home final. Teitelbaum is a difficult grader and is very picky about sources. He sees no problem with criticizing people in front of the class. I managed to get an A-, but it involved a few all-nighters and a ridiculous amount of stress. Try to take Coms 101 or a different professor for 102 so you can avoid Teitelbaum; it will make your life a lot easier.

I would not recommend this professor to anyone. The amount of work for this course is insane and the only way to do well during the final few weeks is if you completely forget about your other classes. He assigns a 7-9 minute speech, a research paper based off a personal interview, a group project involving hours of community service, and a take home final that is ten questions but 2-4 paragraphs each and all of this is during the last 3 weeks. Take a different class or you'll regret it.

He has high expectations and demands a lot out of you, but overall he is a fair grader. If you ask questions, go to office hours, and put in hard work you will do fine in the class. He is very good about grading speeches based on each individuals capabilities. For example if you are not a good speaker he will grade you from there. He does not expect it to be everyone's thing. Teitelbaum isn't the easiest grader but he does not deserve as low of a rating as he has. You just need to be sure you're keeping up with everything because at the end of the quarter you will have the group presentation and your final questions due, and he does not help much with scheduling so it's up to you to stay on track. As for the speeches make sure you give good eye contact and don't read too much, and if your content is good then you'll be fine. I got a B with minimal effort and I also have a fear of public speaking so this class is completely doable, he really isn't as bad as people say on here.

Avoid him at all costs. He will seem chill and reasonable at the start of the course, but you will soon, and unfortunately, realize that his view on everything becomes subjective, as does his grading. And if he screws up organizing time during speech days, and you end up missing a speech because of it, good luck getting even 50% on it. He's biased and ignorant, and if he doesn't like you for whatever reason, even if it's out of your control, then you're screwed. And on top of all that, his organization of work throughout the quarter is screwed up. He basically gives you a nearly free ride until week 6, then piles everything on you in the last couple weeks. Also, he uses his own book, which is pretty flawed and subjective to begin with, and a lot of his logic on the topic of persuasion narrows you to unreasonably minimal thought processes. I can't find a single good reason to have a class with him.

Teitelbaum is a nice guy in the beginning...but like all the other reviews say: be warned. His grading is ridiculous...hardly anybody got an A on a speech. In addition, about the sixth week, he assigns a huge group project, has unreasonable expectations, and gives you little time to work on it. He expects you to have a ton of free time to complete this. He also makes you do a 20 minute group speech AND THERE IS NO INDIVIDUAL GRADE. So if you get in a bad group, you're screwed. If you go into his office hours, he's a nice guy. However, if you send him an email asking about a grade, he gets defensive, mean, and VERY unprofessional. I feel like I didn't learn anything from this class besides how to please him and make him happy.

Teitelbaum is okay. At some points in the quarter I really liked him; he would crack jokes and seemed nice. But, at other times, he was somewhat rude and unprofessional. The speeches you have to do throughout the quarter are a little tough but, you can put in average effort and still get a C or B on them. The group project he assigns at the end is okay; a little stressful but completely do-able. Overall, Teitalbaum is an average teacher and the class is okay. I didnt learn much from the class but its a simple, first year GE. I dont think my public speaking really improved and you wont learn much other than you need more eye contact (his favorite comment). If you put in average effort youll get a high C or B. If you work hard and are already good at public speaking you may be able to pull off an A.

Teitelbaum is a decent COMS professor with a manageable class workload. However, the biggest problem with this class is that no one had any idea where the grades on the speeches came from. He did not do a great job of informing students about how they would be graded on speeches and the final project. Other than that, the class was enjoyable and fun at times but you must show up for class because he does take attendance.

This guy is pretty much a joke, along with his class. You give 3 speeches and do a group project. He assigns reading from his own book (which I would NOT suggest buying) and then gives you BS quizzes on them. Seems like a cool guy at first but that all goes away in a few weeks. Hard to tell where he even gets his reasoning behind the grades he gives you on speeches. He is looking down at his computer for 95% of the speech... the other 5% he is writing stuff down on your evaluation.. So I truly don't know how he does his grading when he is barely paying attention. Overall, bearable class but avoid if possible.

Teitelbaum'c class really caught me off guard. The guy clearly doesn't care at all about his class: he sits lazily in front of his computer all class and shows you pointless videos and slides that don't help you at all. He gives a few very specific quizzes that are word for word from the book that he wrote. The questions are super easy but if you don't read you will get them wrong because of some little wording difference in the answer. He grades his speeches harshly - almost no one gets an A on speeches. And he never gives A's on the final. So unless you're a gifted public speaker or work your ass off - you're not getting an A in this class. Take another teacher - find one that will give you an easy A or will at least care about the class because with Teitelbaum you get neither.

Teitelbaum's class starts out slow and easy. He's pretty pretentious and let me tell you that you DO NOT need to buy the book that he wrote himself for this class. The day-to-day quizzes are super easy, I never read and got 5/5 almost every time. Teitelbaum is an awful communications professor. He refuses to input grades before finals, so you have no idea how you're doing in the class beforehand. For a communications professor, he is really bad at communicating with his students about expectations. He's also not very thorough with his grading. It's one thing to have one student receive a bad grade on a speech. It's another to have a majority of students receive a D on a speech regardless of how much effort they put into it. Teitelbaum was one of my first professors at Cal Poly. Years later, I still appreciate his class. People complain about COMS but I got a lot out of the class. Dr. Teitelbaum is a really great teacher if you know what he wants. The textbook isn't necessary but it definitely helps (I didn't buy it), he takes attendance even though he says he doesn't, and his lectures are really uninteresting. When it comes to speeches, he focuses a LOT on content and less on performance. Make sure you site your sources for everything on each slide and NEVER read your speeches. He's a pretty fair grader when it comes to speeches and he even hands back the grades at the end of class. There's a lot of work towards the end of the quarter because he asks you to write a persuasive speech, volunteer somewhere, work on the group speech, and write a ten page research paper. This class a lot of work but if you don't procrastinate you'll be fine; the actual work isn't that hard.

This guy has absolutely no idea what he is talking about. COMS 102 is the most pointless class, and I would highly recommend just taking 101, because even though there are more speeches in 101, it is far less stressful. However, no matter what you take, do anything you can to avoid this guy. I've never hated a class so much. No matter how hard you try, he will always mindlessly take off points for things you do well. His grading makes absolutely no sense, and his lectures are painful and pointless. Don't even bother buying his book. Every year he comes out with a "new edition", so that he can steal more money from you, even though he probably doesn't change anything at all. You can do fine on the quizzes without reading the book, because its all common sense. I am not exaggerating when I say COMS 102 with Teitelbaum is my least favorite class I've ever taken in my life. He is incredibly rude, he'll give you a C on every speech no matter how hard you practice. Teitelbaum is OK. He's nothing amazing, but if you're like me, you kinda just wanted to get through COMS without a big fuss. If so, Teitelbaum may be an option. Probably not a first option, but people are a bit too hard on him on polyratings. He is a genuinely nice guy. He cares about his students, and can help in office hours. I was a bit worried with low C's on my first two speeches. I ended up with a B without that much of a hustle. He doesn't post grades on PolyLearn, so I really had no idea. I think he curved at the end, because I honestly thought I was going to get a C. You'll read the syllabus, and think he's a really unsympathetic guy, but its quite the contrary. He wants you to succeed. There were days in the class that were actually really fun, and our group for the project had some good times. That said, there were also days where I was just thinking to myself how much of a waste of time this is. I think that the Curriculum is to blame more for this than an individual teacher. Most people don't enjoy COMS, no matter who they have. If you take Teitelbaum, your experience, overall will be a pleasant one, as long as you aren't that one kid that wants to get an A. Be careful with Teitelbaum. He comes off as a really chill guy in the beginning and seems like he's going to be a fair teacher. However, as the speeches start to roll around he becomes worse and worse. His grading is horrible and he basically gives everyone the same grade on their speeches, and it's usually a low B or high C. He expects too much out of a group of kids who are just required to take the class. He expects you to be some expert speaker and writer and when he sees that you're not, he'll have no mercy on you. Plain and simple if he doesn't like you, or if he is in a bad mood, your grade will suffer. Okay first off, everyone is WAY to hard on Teitelbaum in these ratings. This class is very doable if you put in the work and recognize what he is looking for. Citing credible sources throughout speeches and citing them correctly is extremely important. I'm talking real BOOKS or books you find on google scholar or articles written by people with PhDs. He expects you to be extremely well prepared for speeches, but I mean this is college and none of the speeches are that long so this really isn't that hard. Have good eye contact and sound conversational, those things are key. The quizzes are extremely easy and if you read the text you will get 100% on each one. There is a paper you will work on all quarter due at the end that has a prompt that is a little hard to swallow at first, but it only had to be 5 pages and you have ALL quarter. Practice your speeches several times, don't procrastinate, go to class, you'll be fine.

I know that reviews are usually polarized (you're not gonna leave a review unless you really really liked him or really really hated him), so I'm gonna try to not make this entirely negative. Teitelbaum is honestly a dick. I've never met a more condescending, rude man in my life. He made me cry after my last speech (he veered so far from constructive criticism and landed at frankly mean comments about my intelligence and ability to give a speech). He opened up the first class with, “Did you take this class because you heard teitelbaum is the bomb?” If you take this class be ready to receive two letter grades lower than the amount of effort you put into it. I absolutely loved public speaking before this class, and now, due to Teitelbaum’s condescending and absolutely ridiculous critiques, I am now stressed out and nervous when i speak. He is one of those teacher’s that proclaims to be right and the student is always wrong until you receive his majestic insight like he is some kind of god or Yoda. You will never be correct if you attempt to disprove him because he, in his own eyes believes he is a cross between Steve Jobs, Albert Einstein, and Jesus. If you catch him on one of his moody days, be prepared to be ridiculed and talked down to and trust me he is moody 75% of the time. I am pretty sure if Martin Luther King Jr. gave his “I have a dream” speech, he would receive a solid C- from Teitelbaum. He grades harshly and no one in the class will receive a perfect score on any assignment, unless its his 5 question quizzes which are jokes. He does not communicate any assignments and expects you to know exactly everything he wants by the title of the assignment on the syllabus; he does not even tell the class when anything is due. He does not calculate your grade until the end of the quarter and relies on the student to know where he or she is. Also, 80% of your grade occurs in the last 2 weeks and 30 points of participation, an entire letter grade, are up in the air and he will not disclose how much you have received. He is a horrible communicator and thinks he is God’s gift to the world. His grading system for speeches consists of a cluster of checks, minuses and pluses that somehow equate to a grade that is pulled from thin air. And while you speak, he is either checking his phone or on the computer and rarely looks up to look at whoever is speaking. A speech on how inadequate and insufficient he is as a teacher would be fairly easy to construct. If you get on his “bad side,” i.e. question one thing, good luck having more than a C in the class. He is extremely unfair, plays favorites, and is extremely prejudiced. He may have the right ideas as far as lesson plans, maybe, but his lack of teaching skills and genuineness or care for the actual student is what makes him mediocre at the very best as a teacher. If avoidable, do not take this class unless you are willing to put all your time and effort into this class and never have any free time socially or for other classes.

RUN TF AWAY! This guy does not give a shit about his students and takes coms way too weirdly seriously. I tried really hard in the class and went to office hours a good amount and he was super unhelpful. I feel like he takes pleasure in failing his students. I'm not saying a C is failing at all but that was too clutch for comfort. He's also just mean sometimes. He made us write like 7 papers...my friends with a different professor were literally chillin the entire quarter. Don't take this guy, I promise I'm not overreacting. He's a complete waste of time.

Actually a total prick. Has a grading system of "Plusses, checks, and minuses" for your speeches, yet you quickly realize the final grade you receive has nothing to do with those and is simply just a grade based on whatever he feels like you deserve (and he is usually in a pissy mood which severely affects your grade). If you try and discuss your grade with him in a reasonable and respectable manner, he will shit on you as if you are scum. He doesn't pay attention to speeches either so pretty much youre fucked. Dont take his class, he deserves to be fired.

When I started off the quarter I didn't understand why people always gave him such a hard time because he seemed like a decent professor. Now I understand. His grading system for speeches is a system of pluses, checks and minuses and then he pulls your grade out of nowhere, and unless you have solid proof that he messed up on your speech he will just talk down on you until you go away. This being said I am extremely comfortable speaking in front of people, to the point that some classmate evaluations said I was almost too comfortable and it sounded too much like I was talking to them individually. Without his help throughout the quarter I became a better speaker by figuring out how I personally needed to practice speaking. After my final speech I had several classmates the it was the best delivery that they had seen from anybody all quarter, yet his grade for delivery consisted of average and below average marks. This included a below average marks for not having at least I had 4, when I brought this up to him and showed him my presentation he then fixed it, but only because I have visible proof he was wrong. He does not even pay attention while people speak and is honestly a dick to anybody that tries to understand the grade they received from him and the grade you receive entirely depends on his mood for the day where, if he seems like he is ticked off, you had better run for the hills. Trust me, take a different coms teacher.

Teitelbaum is extremely arrogant and not helpful at all when it comes to questions on assignments. The class itself seems like it was thrown together randomly with no relevant content that actually pertains to what is supposed to be taught. He will not answer questions over email at all and you'll work on a speech for 10+ hours and still get a B- or C. His grading is absolutely ridiculous and doesn't demonstrate any methodical processes for how he determined the grade he gives you. He acts like he doesn't give a crap and just looks at his computer and texts during speeches. He'll give you a way better grade if you just come to office hours though (which i found out by the time it was too late). The last 2 weeks consist of a 25 minute presentation by your group on where you volunteered and how you communicated with each other (which is a very annoying project), a 9 minute persuasive public policy speech which he is both extremely vague and overly critical about, and a 5 page research essay. His class is complete BS, I did't learn anything. He gives little to no instruction and then is brutal when grading. Don't take this class.

Teitelbaum doesn't deserve all the hate he gets on here. He's really not terrible. He doesn't post grades all quarter which is really annoying as you are expected to keep a running total, but he does give out a relatively generous amount of extra credit throughout. The group project was annoying but he was extremely lenient on grading. I wrote my final paper the day it was due, got a C on my biggest speech of the quarter, and wrote every speech the night before and somehow still pulled an A. Not a really hard class.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! It is so much unnecessary work. There are three essays, one about yourself, one tribute speech, and a 7-9 minute persuasive speech. No matter how much you look at the audience, he will say have more eye contact. There is also a persuasive essay you have to write and a group project that will be your final. This is a really lame class and is not worth your time. It is so much work for a GE and he did not give anyone an A on one of the speeches when there were some really good ones. He is arrogant and always thinks he is right. Find a better professor plz

If you can take any other coms professor, do so!!!!! Sometimes Teitelbaum can be okay when he is in a good mood, but other days he is simply awful. The last two weeks of the quarter are stacked with everything that's going to affect your grade including a group project, a paper, and a speech thats worth 50 points while the two speeches before that were only worth 10 and 15. He honestly can be quite a jerk at times to his students. He thinks he knows everything when he really doesn't. TAKE A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR. You'll regret it otherwise.

I would really recommend against taking this course. He does a very poor job of vocalizing the assignments in class so make sure to check the syllabus and read everything posted on polylearn. The in class quizzes were extremely easy even if you didn't study or read the materials beforehand. I only received a C because Teitelbaum grades so freaking hard on the speeches and gives literally everyone in the class a C. The only way to get a good grade in the class is to kiss ass and go to office hours to review your speech with him before you give it in class. Oh, and make sure to get on his good side, he doesn't pick favorites but will make it VERY apparent if he doesn't like you.

I find it unfortunate how many angry responses there are about Professor Teitelbaum. I think that if you are an overconfident student that thinks you don't have to try to get an A, you need to open your eyes and see the world for what it is. Teitelbaum is not the best teacher at Cal Poly, but he is no where near the worst. He does care about his students, and he does a fine job teaching the material. He is very helpful in office hours, and it is important to be an advocate for your own education! Yes he is challenging and is sometimes in a bad mood but if you come to class with a positive attitude, he'll be much more pleasant! I think that the reason why he may be bitter at times is because many students are bitter towards him. He's human too. If you respect others, they will respect you.

This tiny man has no fucking clue how to teach. For the first week or two he seemed super chill, then I gave my first speech and realized what I had gotten myself into. He was awful at communicating what he wanted from assignments, he graded way too harsh for a GE course, and was completely inflexible. Teitelbaum set a ridiculously high standard and didn't give anyone in the class an A for the first assignment and only gave 1 A for the second assignment. The in-class quizzes are easy, but that's only 50 points out of the total 300. There are only 3 presentations, one is worth 10 points, one is 15 points and one is 50 points which really bites you in the ass if he doesn't like your last presentation. He suffers from a raging ego and Napoleon complex. DO EVERYTHING IN YOUR POWER TO AVOID GETTING THIS TEACHER

Teitelbaum is generally a good teacher. His grading is pretty harsh, considering no one (or should I say very rarely) do people get A's during their speeches. He is very adamant about following the specified outline for the speeches, the group meeting agendas and minutes, and the group presentation. The textbook is written by him, but in my experience, using it isn't necessary. The quizzes are mainly on his lectures, along with content that's further expanded in his textbook. When you give a speech, he makes two people comment a positive and a negative, and he also gives his own two cents. He is a little bit condescending at times (I never minded), but I understand why he gives the critiques that he gives. I have never gone to his office hours, so I don't know how helpful he is.

Teitelbaum was an okay professor. At the beginning he seemed very interested in helping his students, but as the quarter progressed he began to get more short tempered and sometimes rude. He makes it seem like you are welcome to visit his office hours, but then when you go he makes you feel stupid for asking any questions or he will just say everything is online or in the book. Although I wasn't a fan of his bipolar attitude, his class was pretty straightforward. He followed the syllabus basically the whole quarter so you always knew when the quizzes and speeches were due. I wouldn't recommend this professor, but if you're stuck in this class it's really not the end of the world.

It's unfortunate to be in his class but the sooner you suck it up and get the work done, the less painful it is. He has a straightforward point system for grading the class (300 points total), but be careful because about half of those points are in the last two weeks of class. Work hard on the speeches because during presentation days, he is extremely bipolar and will either move on to the next speaker (which is good) or he will rip your speech a part in front of the entire class. Be prepared for his egocentric personality that shows more and more as each class goes by. It's going to be unclear about what he expects you to do for his class so be sure to read directions closely and befriend some people in the class.

So he has a grading system based on a pluses (excellent), checks (good), and minuses (needs improvement). He did reveal how he grades your speeches. He will put a check, plus, or minus next to the rubric list and says that he'll take off about a 1-2 points off a check and about 3-4 points off a minuses from 100. If there are 22 objectives (which there is for the persuasive speech) you will get a 56 if you get all checks (good) by this method. Now he doesn't do this method entirely because he will look at the calculated grade and see if it matches what you did and then change it from there. He will grade your whole speech quickly. He'll first go through your outline so make sure it looks credible and don't but too many words in it. The very last thing he will look it will generally be delivery. So even though your beginning is good, make sure it is still good by the end because he grades eye-contact harshly. He gives all of your speeches except the last one back at the end of class (basically you can make up some quotes....he won't notice). You will get a final group project, a final persuasive essay, and a persuasive speech in the last 3 weeks of class. He'll make a bigger deal about the group project yet its worth only 20 points whereas the persuasive speech is 80 pts. Hard speech grader (most get a B) but easy with the 5 question quizzes. He has weird social media. Be mindful of his bad moods. He's cocky.....very full of himself. But generally, you don't really have to do much in the class. We played pictionary and charades in class and watch a lot of videos. Overall, just act like your passionate about your speech, like never look down at your paper, make sure you give him a different outline than what you use yourself, and just remember everything I have said. You will most likely get a B. Overall it was actually a helpful class.

Teitelbaum starts out the quarter a cool guy. Then quarter comes closer to the end and all the sudden your grade completely depends on the last two weeks. Great guy- I love Teitelbaum! Very straightforward, super funny, and doesn't tolerate bs. He has a hint of sass at times and it totally cracks me up. When he says you need to do things, DO THEM. Especially getting his book and reading it! I just followed along with the readings and got a low A- for the midterm while other people were handed back Ds and Fs because they didn't think the midterm mattered. There were some days where he was a little moody, but it is nothing like what the other comments said. He is just a straight to the point kind of guy, which I really appreciated. For speeches, definitely go in and help and ask for opinions- he is more than willing to offer advice and I definitely did better on speeches because of it. Overall, I really enjoyed this class! I was totally scared after seeing all of these horrible ratings, but they're probably just from butthurt students who thought they could get an A with minimal effort. If you are considering taking this class, I recommend trying to take it with another professor. Professor Teitelbaum’s class is not incredibly helpful. He’s very moody, so if he is in a bad mood or doesn’t like you, you might struggle. I do well in many of my classes, but this one was my hardest (and it shouldn’t have been). He uses his own textbook which is mostly common sense, and most people just skim it. The speeches are graded pretty harshly (especially the last 2). In this class, you’ll have 3 individual speeches. You will have to put a ton of work in, and it’s likely that you won’t get an A anyways (except on the first one). The final is a group project, and I am not sure how that’s graded, but it’s not horrible. He never posts graded, but you know what you got on most of your assignments. The only good thing is that he sometimes grades on a scale, so I’m hoping my B turns into an A. If you are stuck with him, sit in the front, work hard, and go to office hours (he is surprisingly helpful in office hours). Try to get him to like you. If you can help it, take it with a different professor.

By far, the worst teacher I had this quarter and perhaps ever in a teaching career. His course not only failed to teach oral communication well, but increased my overall anxiety to speak. His grading system was brutally harsh, and many students left his class unsure how they performed so poorly. Other students with different instructors praise them for their encouragement and supportive environment, but Teitelbaum created a whole new atmosphere of tension. Students genuinely feared presenting as they were worried he would roast them in front of the class, an event that occurred often. At times he would shut down an entire students speech with a curveball argument they never researched, or dock points heavily based on his mood. His "textbook" consisted predominantly of self-inserted examples and convoluted definitions for basic concepts (what is a small group, what is teamwork) that don't apply anywhere beyond the midterm, and honestly seemed more like a cash grab than actual interest in teaching students principles of oral communication. I managed to scrape out with a passing grade, but the preparation time was stressful- I definitely pulled a few all nighters just to finish this course. Overall the worst class I have ever taken, and I would advise everyone to avoid this instructor if they value their time and lives.

When I saw I was blocked into Professor Teitelbaum my first quarter freshman year I totally freaked out when I cam on here and saw all the terrible reviews. I'll admit that he can be a little intense at some points, but overall this class is really not that bad, and once you finish you understand why they force everyone to take some form of public speaking class, because it is an essential life skill. He does defiantly play favorites, and least favorites.. but as long as you show up to class, and at least act like you are paying attention to his lectures, and don't talk when he is talking, you will most likely fly under his radar and avoid being the receiving side of any of his little outbursts (not very many I only saw like 2 the whole quarter). For the speeches, he usually grades somewhat fairly, as long as you follow the directions he post on polylearn and goes over in class. Basically you can get a B in this class by just showing up, studying maybe two hours for the midterm, and spending roughly as many hours on the speeches as minutes it is required. The easiest way to do well on the actual speeches is sound enthusiastic about your topic, so pick things you actually are interested in, and MAKE EYE CONTACT with him and the rest of the class during the entire speech. Overall, this class was not nearly as scary as it seems when reading the poly ratings, so if you have to take him it's not the end of the world.

Ah Teitelbaum... The first few weeks are great. He is very nice and seems to care a lot about each of the students; however, on speech days he turns into a jerk. He rips speeches to shreds because they were 1 second too short or the sources were not what he would use. The class consists of one poetry reading (pass or fail), a personal speech (2-3 min), a ceremonial speech (5-7 min), and a persuasive speech (7-9 min). He asks for you to create an outline in his format and perform each speech extemporaneously. After each speech you must write a self evaluation about what you did well and need to improve on. There is 1 midterm and it is a test on his book which is all definitions based and pretty difficult. His book has tons of spelling mistakes and I would recommend using course reserve instead of buying it. Overall he is fine and the course load is very little but be ready for insane mood swings in the course of a few minutes.

This professor is very boring, spends most of his tome focusing on tangents, does not clearly indicate what he wants from students, does not input grades in a timely manner, and is generally frustrating to present with problems. For much of this class if you follow what he states in class often times he leaves out things he wants in your speeches or assignments. He also does not formally type up directions for many of the assignments. Another problem with this course is the close-minded ness in which he grades. For a professor that has such loose instruction, he is one of the harshest graders. As a tip for those taking this class, religiously follow the course outline because that is what he follows whether he states it or not, and always print out two copies of everything! With all of the previous points made, in my own position, I felt that this class rather droned on with little or no logic to what we were being taught. For most classes it is a process that takes work from the students as well as the professors, however for this class he requires a large amount from the students but very lacking on the side of the professor. He often comes to class unprepared, late, or with technology that does not work. Now with the technology side, this may happen to many of us, he has no mercy for when we are not prepared for technical difficulties. The final project and midterm are not too difficult, but good luck if you decide to take this class.

I was blocked into this class my first quarter freshmen year and after reading his polyratings I was SO scared. I was pleasantly surprised though because he does not deserve the horrible reviews he gets. His lectures were always interesting. He did a great job making the class interesting, so we were learning about communication through discussions or games. He also let us out early quite a bit. It's very possible to do well in this class. First, go to his office hours! I went there for like less than 30 min for every speech (email him the night before so he will actually be there) and I genuinely think it is the reason I got an A. He would pull out his computer and help me find research that would support my argument. I always felt better about a speech after meeting with him because he told me exactly what part of my speech is working and what isn't. Another reason I would say to do this though is that this will automatically put you on his good side. And once he decides whether he likes you or not, there's no going back. He definitely grades students he likes better, which isn't fair. The midterm is just multiple-choice questions about his book. It's super straightforward though. I would recommend actually reading it, it's a pretty easy read and worth getting an A on the midterm. Other than that, you have an introductory speech, a ceremonial speech, a persuasive speech, and a group presentation. The group presentation is your final and is also fairly easy, just make sure to actually practice it together so it flows and know your stuff!! Professor Teitelbaum is an okay speech professor. He definitely knows his material, but ironically isn't great at communicating it to the class. The material he lectures about is incredibly abstract. For example, "miscommunication is a form of communication." What is that?!? Also, the professor is sometimes late, but usually only by 5 minutes. Even worse, this professor assigns weekly essays! Essays, in a speech class. It's absurd! Our speech assignments aren't bad. There are 3 total speeches - one as a group project. This is a sleeper class, but you will have to take notes if you want to do well on his final. Take notes on the book material as well. Much of his lecture material is different than what is in the book. If you get this professor, at least enjoy the fact that he has an uncanny resemblance to the actor Jon Lovitz.

This teacher knows his stuff, and knows that he knows his stuff. He is very straight-forward, explains everything, and then moves on. He is an extremely hard grader!! Sometimes he takes things to the extreme, like when he grades speeches, but the fact is you know just what he wants and if you don't fulfill his expectations you don't get the grade. He is fair if just plain tough, but he is also very alive and responsible. He is a good teacher and I would take him again if need be. Just remember, don't slack, and he will reward that.

HAHA i'm so glad I'm done with this class. His class sucks big crap! I've never been so bored during a class. He doesn't make the material interesting, but even worse, his grading is wack. grading is hella inconsistant, I should've checked this site earlier. i've heard good things about other speech teachers *ones that are actually professors* Take him if you have to, but I'd try to avoid this fool if I were u.

The cool part about this class was we only had to give 2 speeches all quarter and it counts the same as scom 101. The final was a piece of cake. The only hard part was he grades pretty randomnly on the speeches. Everyone else just read their speeches off a print-out and they got better grades than those who tried to talk free-hand. So remember that. But I would take him if I were you. The group projects were cool.

Jeremy has been my favorite instructor so far. His class was fun, I mean it was half lecture and half speeches. He lets you know his criteria for the speeches, he teaches what will help you on the speeches using his criteria, he lets you know what will be on the final. He prepares you for what he expects, and doesn't ask for anything but what he has taught you. I really enjoyed his class, and would retake the class again in a heartbeat. He is down to earth and a really cool guy.

Okay - this guy was actually a pleasurable teacher, he stretches his class times, but overall he isn't asking for too much - 3 speeches, a group project, and an essay. I liked it because his group project made you do community service, which you have to do outside of class. TIP TIP TIP: meet with your group EARLY... we had to rush and half ass our group project at the last minute (we got A's though) and actually practice for the speeches... speak with clarity and he will be satisfied. AND THE FINAL TOOK 30 MINUTES.. i don't know if i failed it or not, but it was ridiculously easy... but most of the final is from the book.

Before I begin, this class is speech. It isn't everyone's favorite class and its basically a GE everyone wants to just get over with. I did, however, learn a lot from Jeremy about becoming a better public speaker. I didn't feel intimidated by him because he makes the setting pretty laid back and lets you do your thing. He doesn't play favorites and he is pretty good about working around student schedules and working with you. He is a nice and funny guy and you learn a lot and will most likely become a better speaker. You do 3 speeches by yourself. They take awhile to do and afterwards you have to watch yourself on tape and then write an evaluation of it. The coolest part of the class is when you are assigned a group. Your group picks a community service agency and then works with them for 2 hours and then you do a presentation on it. This was pretty cool because you got to know people from your class and you are working for a good cause. I would recommend Teitelbaum, the class isn't hard and its a good way to get SCOM over with.

I was really terrified to take a speech class but I'm so glad that I got him as a teacher. He is really laid back and doesn't make you feel intimidated at all. There are 3 speeches total and then a group project and presentation. He also lets you videotape a speech if you miss one so technically you could only have to do 2 speeches by your self in front of the class. If you are dreading taking speech take Jeremy, it will be a good and easy way to get the requirement over with!

Jeremy is an awesome teacher. He is really laid back. He made the class comfortable to do your speeches. You only do 4 speeches for the quarter and they are very easy. 3 of them you have to do on you own but the last one is a group speech on community service. He grades easy, but he grades your speeches more on your outline than your actual speech. He also gives many extra credit opportunites in the quarter.

I would definitely reccomend this teacher for speech communication 102. In the beginning he tries to scare you about missing class and how he grades speeches. However, I think he was very fair in how he graded the speeches and was leniant about missed classes and speeches. I did the very minimum requirments, missed 3 or 4 classes, and my speeches were average and I got a B- in the class. Although his lectures and videos were very boring, I really liked him as a person. He is very entertaining and honest. You should definitely take him for a speech class!!

Jeremy is amazing. i did not like to speak in front of big crowds and he made it so much easier the advice and everything he gave us in class made it easier to talk and give speeches. the speeches are quite simple and are graded fairly. if you are on his good side or bad side it might influence your speech grade but overall the class is great. i got a d but because i missed one of my speeches so do not miss a speech. the final was a joke it was really easy. do not talk in class or play with your computer cause the end of the quarter it will show in your grade. i strongly recommend him though.

"Jeremy" continually rips into students, versus giving positive feedback. As a class, we dreaded speech days because we knew that we would only be told what we did wrong, though criticism is helpful - he did it relentlessly and not in a respectful manner. His grading is inconsistent, final exam is worth the equivalent of a speech, and a group project - in which you spend even more time on than final studying and any other speech - is worth a mere 25 points (versus the 50 of another speech). Overall...avoid this class. It is said to focus on small group presentations, but that was only covered within one class.

I think professor Teitelbaum is very intelligent and knows what he is talking about. Everything is pretty straighforward. Start the research paper as soon as you can. it is due towards the end of the quarter but he will mention it at the beginning and then not mention it again until it is due. There was not much room for crativity. As long as you do exactly what he asks and have an interesting intro and a clear thesis, you will be fine. Yes it is hard to get an A on the speeches, but as long as you do practice and TRY to do well you will. I could not give speeches and would always be shaking and nervous while giving one. After taking this course I have definitely improved and definitely recommend him.

This teacher really sucks. He seems like he grades arbitrarily, so if you're a brown noser and sit in the front, he'll grade easier on speeches. When he gives back papers, he just gives vague ass comments and doesn't let you know what you can do to improve. He's not great with communication himself, what a speech instructor. People say that he really knows his stuff, but that's bullshit because he relies way too much on his notes and there's nothing in the class that doesn't just seem like common sense. Get another teacher b/c you won't learn anything in his class.

Teitelbaum is a funny guy. He has a dry sarcastic sense of humor which is helpful when learning about something like speech communication. Mr T is a pretty good teacher. You can tell that he is trying to be funny and to connect with the students. His lectures are very casual and you feel like you can ask questions. The essays really make you think...not just recite the lecture or test, but it does help to ask him to look at it first. The final was fairly short and not too bad, and the reveiw game helped alot. Overall you feel like you can ask him about the major, or your career or anything.

This is one cool guy. He really knows how to present the material in a fashion that will keep the class entertained and interested, yet still learn a decent amount. Overall I had a very good experience--lots more writing than most speech class I've heard about, but also fewer speeches to make up for it. He grades the papers fairly, but can be a bit random on grading speeches...I can see how it could be hard, but still dissapointing sometimes. And his grading system is intense: an A is 93% or higher, B 83%, etc. But he gives a couple of super easy extra credit assignments, so I guess it's possible to get an A if you really try, but for most of the class it means an easy B. Worked for me...

Prof. Teitelbaum is a very understanding and very nice guy. I do not have any problems with him as a person, I think he's a great guy. He also uses a lot of different ways of teaching (different media) and generally tries to make it exciting. However, his class is utterly useless. You give two speechs, and naturally they're appropriate for a speech class. Yet, he also assigns this group project and this career paper that are so terrible that you have to go out of your way to make sure that it is speech related (and it has to be). The career paper was absolutely pointless (how does someone in your profession use communication?). I doubt there is any major on campus in which someone's profession does NOT include communication. Also, theres this group project which almost everyone does at the last minute and as little work as possible. Then you sit through the presentations which are all so insanely boring because the groups have to relate to the principles of speech communication. But since the class is GE you all have to suffer through it sometime.

This is a fairly easy class...I mean, you get one paper, 3 speeches, a group project, no midterm, and the final is sooooooooooo easy (read the book)...granted, prof teitelbaum is slightly monotone, this class was actually interesting when we got into all of the theories on communication. The group project was pretty cool too because it made us do community service for like 2 hours, so it got us involved. Professor Teitelbaum is a really nice guy, and in class, he always takes peoples opinions and comments seriously. He never makes you feel like your wrong really-which has its upsides...and downsides: He doesn't really tell you what you need to work on for your next speeches...so you end up getting marked off for the same things over and over...his ambiguous grading though is not a big deal in the scheme of things-i did find myself to become a better public speaker through this class, and the class was overall fairly easy...just make sure your outlines are formatted right-he can get pretty picky on those!

I learned many things to help me with speeches in Teitelbaum's class. Though I do believe he's too much of a slave to generic writing formulas. If you want a speech teacher that will allow you to express creativity and independence with your writing, this isn't him. Though he is a funny guy, something of a stand-up comedian, it will be a rather entertaining class. You will also do a large group project at the end of the quarter, so be prepared for that. He's not a bad teacher, recognizing the stresses that students sometimes have, and allowing them to make up speeches missed via a videotape. He will even take self evaluations late, which is a godsend if you have a bad memory. The downside is that he is not all that clear on what he is looking for in speeches, and you have to put together what he wants based on his lectures, which can be a little frustrating when you miss something. Also, don't just take notes on what he writes on the board; take notes on the key issues he talks about. This is essential, especially if he doesn't use a book for the class. All in all, he is fairly decent and forgiving -- just don't expect him to make if an incredibly easy class for you.

Your grade is out of 400 points, and 280 of those points come down to the last two or three weeks of the quarter (100 of them being the final)--be prepared to be stressed out during that time. An additional 50 points is "participation," and you have absolutely no way to judge where you are on that, so basically 330 of your 400 points are pretty much up in the air until the last two weeks of the course. You will not know how you are doing in this class at any point in time until it's over. This class was a total joke and waste of everyone's time. There are about 5 things to learn in lecture. And don't even thing about trying to be creative on your speeches. Do exactly what he wants. The group project was in the end, exceedingly pointless. You don't learn anything about speaking by completing it, you only learn how to get angry with your group-mates for being disorganized and not getting anything done. (Either that, or you are one of the people who is slacking off, in which case you don't care.) In this class you will write a "communication career paper"--you interview a professional, and write a paper (total length less than 10 pages) giving background on them and their career/field, finding out what communication issues they face, and then doing research on how to solve the problems. Also, he doesn't talk about the paper in class; the (rather unclear) instructions are stapled to the back of the syllabus and you are expected to just show up on the last day of class with a completed paper. I recommend starting on this paper early in the quarter. Lectures are pointless; I took all the notes I could and ended up with about two and a half pages (front and back) for the entire quarter, and I write big. There is no textbook, so you should take notes--like I said, there's not much to write down anyway. So there's not a whole lot to study for on the final. There are 50 multiple choice questions on the final, and it was the single most poorly written exam I have ever taken. All of the questions were either so obvious you could have answered them on the first day of class, or so poorly thought-out and nonsensical that there is no way in hell you could hope to do anything but guess. Also, he forgot to do the course evaluations. (That's why I felt obligated to post on Polyratings.) The verdict: avoid Teitelbaum if you care about your grade. You'll be too stressed out. Take him if you don't care about your grade--you'll only really have to do anything for this course during the last 2-3 weeks of the quarter (although you'll have to face the ire of the one person in your group who wants to get a good grade and ends up pulling it all together).

Jeremy is a fun guy. The class is well-organized and has the potential to be very entertaining--and it is, most of the time. However, the speech expectations were a little confusing. I got three Bs in a row, although I felt that I improved vastly with every speech, and I do not usually have a problem with public speaking. He has a fairly strict view of how a speech should be outlined and delivered. However, he's a good professor and he's willing to work with students who need extra help. I had a good time in this class, and despite my mediocre speech grades, I still pulled an A because of the group project, the two papers (watch out, they're sneaky and not really discussed in class, so begin to work on them early in the quarter), and the final (which is breezy). I do recommend this course with this professor.

As you stand in front of the class, he rips on what you did wrong, but most of the time its on things you never once heard him talk about durning the lectures. Even after hearing someones speech, and majority of the class feels that the speaker did pretty good, he finds something wrong about it. Mr. Teitelbaum seems like a very easy-going and understanding teacher when class first starts, but he gets more and more frightening as the year goes on. If he is having a bad day, he will pick out students for no reason at all and tear them down in front of the whole class with statments such as "your speech is no where near the level it should be" or "it is obvisous you did no research." However, I noticed the students he would say this to were often at the same level as everyone else... If he has a negative comment he needs to save it for when the entire class is not present. He picks on every tiny detail of your speeches and gives NO possitive feedback at all. Although he never completely tore me down, I watched him do it to my classmates and found it completely unacceptabe. And then there are days he is in a good mood and wastes entire classes playing sherades or pictionary, so basically the only time you need to go to class is on speech days because he teaches nothing. But he will mark you down for absenses so it is a lose lose situation. I attempted to email him several times throughout the quarter and got one word answers in response to multiple part questions. Lastly, I emailed him THREE times asking for my final grade and research paper grade because he told us to email him and he would get back to us. Nope, no reply at all. DO NOT LEAVE THE RESEARCH PAPER TO LAST MINUTE: he doesn't even mention it until the class before it is due and he is very reluctant to answer questions on it. The prompt is in the syllabus and is very confusing, so I recommend starting right away since it is worth a large chunk of points. Basically, he is an ASSHOLE. I would avoid his class, even if you are a good speaker.

Teitelbaum very rarely gives out A's on speeches. The beginning of the class is useless over 70% of your grade is in the last 2-3 weeks. This 70% includes the group project(Everyone gets a B or higher), the final (review his online book), speech project (He doesnt talk about this at all in class), and the persuasice speech (Use a ****load of sources, and you still wont get above a B). He is very anal retentive and will always rag on students after they deliver their speech. He even tries to get the class involved by asking the students what you did wrong in your presentation, how nice. Try not to take this teacher, his lectures are long and boring, his comments rude, and his ego is huge.

Try not to take this teacher because he does not communicate well in any way with the students. After someone gives a speech, he would make some crude comments especially after the persuasive speeches. All your speeches are videotaped. There is a large research paper due at the end of the term worth more than the two first speeches combined. The only time he mentioned the paper was the first day of class and the day before it was due. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE THE PAPER. Some of my classmates went to his office hours and he was not there. There is ALWAYS something wrong with EVERYONE'S speeches. So try not to take him. The final was easy, but the bulk of the grades are based on speeches and the paper. I"m so glad this class is over.

Teitelbaum really was a terrible teacher. Although he never embarrassed me in class, he surely made others feel very belittled. He never explained the speeches in depth and gave no helpful feedback after the speeches. He seems really cool at first but then he becomes a jerk. And don't even try to go to office hours because he is NEVER THERE! I would avoid this class to be quite honest.

Ok, when I signed up for this course I came on here and read what people had to say and I thought I was in for it bad. The truth is most people on here need to get some guts and stop complaining because they're sensitive to critiquing. I admit, Jeremy is not the most lighthearted professor, but he teaches well. Make sure you take the FEW notes he writes, it's not hard, so just do it. I took maybe five pages of notes the whole quarter, it's not bad really, but it is useful. As far as presenting the material, I don't see how people can say he's a poor teacher. When he teaches, he asks questions, that for me, are difficult to understand at first. He does this and has people struggle through it, so we remember the meanings behind the simple idea of "Id'ing your audience." So yes, he makes things unclear, but never left them that way, he always answered questions and tried to clarify things. Now on the topic of him being mean... he is blunt, that is it. He never graded unfairly to anyone, but still people in my class complained behind his back about their grades. These same people came in early to class and admitted that they wrote their speech an hour before they left for class. If you don't spend the time you personally need to meet the standards of this class, then you don't deserve a good grade. And when I gave speeches, Jeremy wasn't very flattering with his comments all of the time, but he only told the truth. People did terribly on their speeches, he shouldn't be forced to lie to them. At least he listened to the speech. Wait until you get comments back from the class and you know they weren't even paying attention to what you had to say. So he's not mean, just blunt about what you do wrong, it's ridiculous people can't take criticism like his because they've done things wrong. I got good grades and he rarely had more than one good comment to say to me, the rest where things I did wrong. Also, don't bother with Office hours, because he emails people bad pretty quickly. I've had five minute turn overs with email before, a few times too. It's much simpler that way. Work load is what I would at least expect for a college GE class. It's not terrible, just try not to let it pile up.

DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. He is horrible. He is very mean and rude to people after they give speeches, and doesn't grade fair AT ALL. He grades on whether he likes you or not, and whether he agrees with your topic. This is the most painful class I have EVER taken. The upside is you can usually get a b or c if you do all of the assignments. My roommate has stoffer and likes her, so take her instead, or ANYONE ELSE.

Teitelbaum is a funny guy. The first two weeks of class, he is your best friend. After the first speech, he turns into a jackass. Teitelbaum is a horrible teacher. On the ceremonial speech, I slayed 'em. Everyone loved the speech. The jackass failed me and shot my grade for the quarter. I barely worked back up to a B. He plays favorites and does not grade everyone equally. Definitely try to avoid this guy. He doesn't show that he cares about or wants his students to succeed. He acts like he doesn't want to be in class. His general attitude says that he thinks he is better than everyone, and only he knows what makes a good speech. After he gets an impression of you, it sticks regardless of your work. He is an arrogant, lazy dick.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!! ... If I could give anybody one piece of advice for their entire time at Cal Poly... it would be to not take Teitelbaum's class. From the outside he seems very friendly but once you get to know him (after 2 min) he turns into a complete jerk.... major sketch ball. He always looks up your references on his laptop while you're speaking then he criticizes you for not talking about certain things even though you probably did and he wasn't paying attention... he also texts during class. Very unapproachable... uncomfortable to go to office hours.. just don't ever sign up for this class.

Everyone is pretty hard on Jeremy, but it is a straightforward class. He gives you the exact format of what your speech should be. The criteria he grades you on is in the syllabus, so everything is right there. He is kind of a dick after your speech and it is a little unnerving that he looks up your sources as you go, but honestly when you're giving it, that's the least of your worries. And the class is so friendly after you're done (they know how awkward it is), you are just glad it is over and don't care what he says. I've heard there are better teachers, but if you get Jeremy, whatever it aint no thing. Besides, you get to watch George Carlin in class. Also, the final is incredibly easy.

I got an A in his class but this guy wasnt that nice. He expects everyone to be great speech givers without any real instruction. The research paper at the end is a joke too. Takes forever and worth alot. But it holds no significance to the actual class. His class isnt that bad though. Its pretty simple, but be ready to get torn apart by him if you give a bad speech. He grades on how he feels. The best way to get a good grade is just stick to the basics. Dont do anything elaborate. Tip, make sure your facts are strait cuz while your given your speech he searches on the internet to make sure everything is legit.

I've come out of his class feeling way less prepared and confident for giving speeches. It's weird that after acknowledging how scary it can be to give a speech in front of a large class he would inappropriately destroy you with nonconstructive criticism if he disagreed with your message. I spoke on a pretty controversial subject for my persuasive speech. Immediately after my presentation which I was pretty nervous for he claimed I gave no evidence and that it was all basically "my opinion". I in fact did give evidence, citing 3 different court cases and bringing in 3 other sources. Throwing salt on the wounds he told another girl after her speech that should have brought in some evidence, SUCH AS COURT CASES. After my speech, he asked a completely flawed question implying the scientific method can't give qualitative results (artard), so when I told him I didn't understand the question he just blew it off and responded "yeah well obviously you should have done more research." Also I've been to his office twice DURING POSTED HOURS to discuss my grades (apparently I have no idea how to give a proper speech) and he hasn't been there either time, even after he specifically said during class that he would be there during the time period. Seriously this guy grades based on his opinion and is a complete douche, no other way to put it. Maybe if you're really good at reading what a teacher expects you can excel in this class, but other than that, good luck. I learned nothing in this class. Avoid this mofo.

Teitelbaum is a great speech teacher who makes the class interesting. 102 only had 3 speeches and a group project. He is a pretty fair grader and if you just show up to class and do the work you'll do fine. He got a little touchy toward the end of the quarter, so everyone got some bad grades, but the "final" is multiple choice and super easy.

I didn't even complete one of the speeches cause i had no voice, never made it up, passed the class with a C+ I would honestly recommend him, he's funny and understanding when you have VALID reasons. The class overall is 3 speeches, a group project, and the final. The final was a bit ridiculous, 10 questions you had to answer in 1-3 paragraphs due on the day of the final, but overall not a bad class. Just show up and you'll do fine.

He seems very relaxed at the beginning at the quarter but don\'t get too relaxed!! You do a total of 3 individual speeches and then one group project that lasts for about 30 minutes. When you do the speeches he wants not only what the issue is but why. I earned an A- to a B on every speech. I pretty much earned the same grade on each speech. I put in a lot of work on my last individual speech an still got a B which was frustrating. He pretty much gives everyone B\'s or below. When you have written assignments you have to be very careful because you must follow his directions precisely and he wants reasoning besides facts. MANY PEOPLE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS BE CAREFUL! Many in the class received D\'s on the written assignments. His class was helpful for ENGL 145 but I think it is pretty difficult to please him, he is super picky. :(

He is easy going on the first speech but all the ones after he is very vague about what he is expecting and then is EXTREMELY picky. he is an unfair grader and inconsistent he grades on his mood and he picks favorites typically the people who are naturally good speakers. His criticism is harsh which really isnt an issue but he doesnt tell you how to improve just that you are wrong. He grades the writing assigment really difficult even though it is a speech class and expects you to have IMENSE amounts of research if you want a helpful speech class DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS . If you are really good at giving speeches you will probably fine but he crams a bunch of really big point assigments at the end makes it hard.

Mr. Teitelbaum... well, lets just start off with a little story. Once upon a time I had an A the entire quarter until the ten page research paper (not even on the syllabus) was graded. I did all of the work and followed the entire prompt. I got it back with an F, with no editing on the entire paper. Frustrated, I went to office hours where he told me he didn\'t like my topic. Teitelbaum is not a professor (seriously), he is an instructor in speaking where he has no education in teaching. Not only did I get an A the entire quarter before this paper, I got A\'s in AP Literature and AP Language (got 4\'s on both of the AP tests) and got a C in the class because... he didn\'t like my topic? Altogether, it is a pretty easy class but he is incredibly boring and a closet asshole (which will slowly come out of the closet throughout the quarter).

Professor Teitelbaum\'s course requires that one be organized and proactive. There are 3 individual speeches, 1 group project, a research paper, and a take-home final question exam. Professor T does not spend much time explaining the research paper and group project, requiring you to be proactive and ask him questions so you\'re sure to do well. Don\'t wait until the last minute, these speeches take time to PREPARE and PRACTICE for. If you\'re prepared you\'re fine, Teitelbaum is not one of those professors who tears you apart in front of the class (unless it was REALLY bad), so for an introductory public speaking class I really liked him in that respect. No textbook was required, just recommended. A few PowerPoint presentations, take notes because the content in the PowerPoints are the answers to the final exam questions. Very approachable and, I think, cares about the success of those students who want to learn, and more importantly, those that SHOW that they want to learn. I recommend Professor Teitelbaum.

This class is pretty difficult in many aspects: don\'t expect to get A\'s on any of the speeches, as he is a very tough grader (especially if he thinks you don\'t make enough eye contact). I received an 80% on every speech I gave, and only got one A any of the 6-9 assignments we had prior to the final exam. The final exam was essentially two parts: a 4-6 page research paper and 10 questions about communication. I was determined to do well in the class and somehow managed to pull off an A. So I have two pieces of advice if you take Teitelbaum: 1) DO HIS EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES THROUGHOUT THE QUARTER, THEY HELP. 2) Put effort into it, and you will get the grade you want.

What a horrible teacher. He barely does any teaching and just assigns speeches while going in depth about the philosophical and metaphysical bullshit about Communication. He spent a grand total of one day explaining how to actually give a good speech. He's terrible at organizing his class the first half of the quarter consisted of only two speeches. The second half included a speech as long as the previous two combined, a 6 page research paper, 10 essay questions with citations, and a group project with 5 hours of service and a 20 minute presentation. The last 2 weeks were absolute hell. Avoid this teacher if you can!!

Teitelbaum is a difficult teacher (both class and personality), but if you stay on top of things, you should be able to get an A or a B. Theres some various homework assignments, 3 speeches, an interview, a group project, research paper, and take-home final. The beginning of the quarter isn't too bad. In fact, its downright easy. The first speeches are worth like 10 and 20 points, and hardly affect your grade. However, towards the end of the quarter, the work starts to pile up and smacks you in the face. You really really really have to stay on top of things. Don't let the laid back and easy atmosphere of the first few weeks mislead you!!! His grading system is a little subjective, so definitely don't get on his bad side. He gave my B's on all of my speeches, which, considering my public speaking ability, was fair. Though, I he was kind of hard on other people. Just make sure to you actually PRACTICE your speech!!! Also, you have to write your outlines, and he is very very picky about those. I found that he would take off points for things that he briefly mentioned or didn't even mention at all. If you want to talk to him about your grade or project or something... well, good luck with that. He gets on the defensive almost immediately and its very difficult to talk with him. Overall, he's not the worst teacher I've ever had, but if I were you, I'd choose somebody else. A lot of my friends had much nicer and easier teachers.

At first Prof Teitelbaum seemed very cold and unfriendly but our class grew to like him more as the quarter went on. The quarter is relatively easy until the last 2 weeks when he assigns a ton of extra work. My finals week was consumed with doing work for this class and so I felt unprepared for finals in my other classes. I was really nervous to take this class because I hate public speaking but a.) it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and b.) I think I actually improved my public speaking skills, although I think everyone pretty much gets a B on every assignment and a B in the class unless you really go above and beyond. He's also a tough grader. And DON'T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE for the research paper!!! It will bite you in the ass if you do! You never know what kind of mood he is going have and if he seems grouchy then it's like walking on eggshells the entire class (not to mention inconsistent grading methods)! Don't dare ask a question or else he will rip you in front of the class if he's having a bad day. Sure, you have to stay on top of the coursework but if you do need help with anything, you're not going to get it from Teitelbaum. Professor Teitelbaum is awesome! I was putting off taking COMS for a reason...I am HORRIBLE at speaking in front of people! However, I put work into all my speeches and got great feedback from both him and the class and got better progressively. If you put some work in and show progression from the beginning of the quarter to the end...he WILL notice and reward you! However, if you are a procrastinator, this class is not for you. By the last 3 weeks of the quarter you have a research paper, a 50 point speech, a group project AND a take home final to finish. All in all, just put a little work in every week and show up to class ( he gives you points) and you'll at least pull a "B-" in the class.

Teitelbaum starts off the quarter as a pretty laid back guy, but I have never known a man with more PMS problems. Getting graded in his class is like winning the lottery. On my research paper he underline when I said "this causes poor communication" and took points off with his comment "evidence?".... When the next 4 lines was about a story example. The grade you get doesn't reflect your work, but his mood. One speech that I didn't PREPARE for AT ALL got a better grade than a speech that I slaved over for weeks. Teitelbaum does not care about his students and he has no systematic grading scale. He grades based on his mood or what he thinks of you. He's often bipolar and yells at the class, it just becomes awkward since everyone is confused at his behavior. My first speech I got an 80%, second and third speech 80% as well. My research paper and final project 80% as well. He is a teacher who definitely grades subjectively. I know for a fact, that my speaking skis improved dramatically; I actually learned to speak well. But, my grade does not indicate that. How can I get the same grade on every speech, yet improve after every single one. He has his students record their speeches to evaluate later, that's how I know i did better. The last month is HELL because so much work is assigned last minute. I went to his office hours too!! As others have said, this guy is a ticking time bomb. Gets progressively rude and uncaring. He took off random points from my papers asking what my evidence was when I had clearly followed up with valid studies cited. He decided that he did not like my groups' community service presentation so he began to interrupt us and ask pointless and interrogative questions about why we chose the certain volunteer organization for our presentation topic. He did not interrogate the other groups, and even when I gave valid and honest reasons for why we went with a certain organization, he kept on repeating the same question.
