To the previous post: well stated! Glad you can demonstrate your verbal and compositional aptitude so well--you truly embody the learn by doing ethic. Have fun taking remedial courses at night school/your community college when you get kicked out of this university, perhaps the experience will serve you well and you'll gain some perspective. Glad to know another douchebag--who I might have had to compete against for jobs--has failed out. Don't let it hit you on the way out . . . :)

I did not like her. My biggest complaint is that GRAMMER is not everything in life, which she seems to think it is. I worked my ass off on some of the essays, and the highest grade i recieved was a B. She actually told me that I had great arguments in my papers, but my grammer was deficient and thus pulled my grade down. During my quater with her, i guess she was stricter than ususal (talking to my friends who had her last quater, i had her fall quater). If your grammer was bad enough, it was an automatic D. So, yeah. I didn't get along with her at all, probably never will. Maybe i just don't like grammer. But, long live the Grammer Nazi

first off, this is not going to be an easy 'a' as i thought it would be. rather you have to work really hard to earn your grade, but professor wilhelm is a great teacher none the less. the class is made up of a weekly grammar usage quiz (you get to use the grammar book), 3 books you read (all of which i enjoyed, and i don't like reading), and a series of in class and out of class essays, along with 3 journals you write in which as long as fill them up, you get an easy 32 points for each. she grades you very hard on the essays and the average grade on them in my class was a 'c.' but if you're willing to sacrifice a little time to go to an office hour she is more than willing to help you out to better prepare you for next time. all in all you will become a better writer in this class, you may not walk out with the grade you hoped for but you get what you earn. this class takes some good writing skills and most importantly be on top of your grammar rules. many people say she grades too hard on the essays, but it only makes you a better writter in the end and i would recomend her if you are looking to become a better writer. her class isn't boring and she tells stories which she relates to the lessons. all in all a great teacher with lots to learn from her.

Wilhelm is a good teacher, but a little harsh on her grading. Her big thing is "Classical Rhetoric" and grammar. "Classical Rhetoric" is her idea of how paragraphs should be written, with a story at the beginning, then your thesis, then your arguments, then answer any questions your reader might have. It is pretty much the same thing as a 5-paragraph essay, with minor differences. She is also big on grammar, with a timed open-book quiz every Friday. While they are open-book, they are very tough because you only get 20 minutes. You should study a little bit on Thursday night just so you aren't suprised by the content. You will learn a lot about grammar from the quizzes and essays. If you want an easy A, do not take Wilhelm. But if you want to master your grammar and writing skills, she is a great teacher.

She is the best English teacher I've yet to encounter. Having said that, the class is hard. Mindless automatons should not take this class. The class boils down to this: 2 in-class essays, 4-out-of class essays, 3 journals, 6 or so reading quizzes, 8 or so grammar quizzes. Points are stacked at the end of the quarter, with the final two essays being worth more. The class itself is easy. The lectures are entertaining because she likes to include anecdotes about her life. The discussions about the books currently being read give more insight to the material. Plus, she's willing to let the class go if the discussion is more or less dead. As for the work...all the essays are hard. So GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS! She's a boon in helping you find a logical way to present your essay and making sure the arguments make sense...which matters more than fixing your grammar. Oh, and before you can even think about getting an A or B on an essay, every category has to be okay: grammar, logic, structure, etc. As for the reading quizzes, just stay on the book and you'll be fine. The grammar quizzes are somewhat hard, just one of those things that you have to know. She's willing to help you on that too, though. And as for the journals...free points. Simply put...if you want a challenge from a nice teacher who's willing to go the extra mile for you if you go it for her, take her. You won't be dissapointed.

If you are sick of sitting in boring classes with an old hag for a teacher, then this is the class for you. Professor Wilhelm is DEFINITELY one of the best professors at Cal Poly. It is blatantly obvious that she truly enjoys her work. She makes going to class fun, honestly! I only missed one class the whole quarter, because i really enjoyed being in her class. Yes, she is a very hard grader, and there is no curve, but I guarantee you that you will not care when the grades come out. As long as you do your work and take it seriously, this will be one of the best classes you will ever take. I've had numerous bad professors at Cal Poly, but Wilhelm is on the opposite extreme. I guaranted you will come out of this class feeling amazing.

I'm a CSC major and this class really sparked my interest in English. She really makes lecture interesting by adding in bits of commentary. She is heavily into grammar but I didn't think the quizes were that hard, but she is pretty tough on essay grading. However, even if I got a C and the class was at 7:00 am I would still take her.

This has to be one of the nicest teachers ever. she brought cookies and rice crispie treats a couple times. threw out a test cause everyone bombed it, had to "research" days (cut days). But that doesnt cut it when it comes to your grade. if you feel your an average writer, nothing fancy but you write fine. Well then accept a C for your grade. no other way around it unless your a grammar wiz. Like all the other reviews, grammar is huge. she picks out every single mistake with a fine tooth comb. Plus weekly quizzes which helped me because i tried everythign and still got C's on all the essays. i figured if i went to her three times in her office hours with my essay she would be able to tell me where im going to get marked down, nope. still a C paper and there are all these marks like "what do you mean here" and "unclear", the type of comments you would assume she would say when she read the essay the first time. She comes across as a very nice and caring teacher, which she is but her gradin on essays should be reserved for graduate student not freshman students who are forced to take her class.

I loved this lecturer. I dont think I've ever learned more english in my life. Yes, the grading is a little ridiculous, but she simply has high expectations and if you put the effort in to make your writing as good as you possibly can and then some, then you will see that you really do get the grade that you deserve. If you really want to be able to write well, you should take Wilhelm. She is incredibly nice and is always there during office hours to help you out on your essays and brings in treats every once in a while. Her stories are excellent and so are her teaching skills.

I am not one to complain, and I am certainly not a poor student, but I believe that Wilhelm is the most horrible professor in all Calpoly. Because writing is subjective, it is difficult to grade, but when the teacher fails your papers because of her political bias, its wrong. She has this cute little exterior that tells you to see her at her office hours, and when you show, she refuses to help. Professor Wilhelm is a good professor. Class is interesting and fun. The grade consists of two inclass essays and three out of class essays and grammar quizzes (open book). Professor Wilhelm is a stickler for spelling and grammar. Professor Wilhelm likes to shock the class by giving everyone (with the exception of a few people)D's on their first essay. Don't worry! I have a theory she does it to scare the class. Either you become an amazing writer, or she becomes a bit more lax because the rest of the grades just keep getting better from there! I reccommend taking Professor Wilhelm course. I had a good experience in her class!

Great class for engl 134. She was engaging and encouraging. She often cuts class short and even has a "cut" day where students don't have to go to class. She is a fair grader when it comes to essays. Wilhelm is extremely nice. She tells entertaining stories during class, and she's not intimidating at all when you go to her office hours. We had to write 2 in-class essays on the novels we read in class which were Cannery Row and The Things They Carried. The Things They Carried is an awesome book. We had to write 3 other essays: a definition essay, a claim essay, and the research paper. We also had weekly grammar quizzes that was based on the reading assignment from The Writer's Reference by Hacker. The grammar quizzes were just paragraphs of bad prose. They weren't that bad even though they were timed because they were open-book quizzes. She emphasizes classical rhetoric and you have a couple of reading assignments in Rottenberg. If you're thinking about taking the class, you should only hesitate taking it from her if your grammar isn't that great. She'll mark you for every misused word, every misplaced comma and any other grammar mistake. She's a grammar fanatic. If you want an easy class and your grammar isn't that great consider taking somebody else. If you want to improve your grammar definately take her because she'll challenge you to become a better writer.

Wilhelm was really great! She has a lot of fun teaching this class and it is obvious that she loves the subject and wants her class to like it as well. We had to read Thinking Socratically, which was really boring and easy to get behind in. Luckily she knew it was boring and helped simplify the material. We also read two other books which were interesting and easy to get through. She didn't assign too much homework but we did have weekly reading and grammar quizzes, a multiple chice midterm and a final paper. She was really helpful with her grading and always willing to give individual help at office hours or after class. Overall, this was a great class and I urge everyone to take Wilhelm for English!

Wilhelm appears at first to be very nice and presents herself as a hip, young, and sporty prof. who could fit in at any keg party at poly. Don't let that BS fool you - The woman is as cold as ice when it comes to grading and will smile in your face when she explains to you why you are getting a shitty grade. Trick, I was in AP english and got a 4 on the AP test. I also got a 630 in my vocab section of my SAT's... don't try and tell me what good english be. She favors girls like they are her own children and treats minority students like they dont exist. (I'm pretty sure I remember her using the "N - word" in a lecture too.) She gives weekly vocab quizzes, all of which I aced, and some writing assignments (which I also did fairly well on) all to end up getting a completely obtuse grade on my final research paper which bumped me down to a C. She cares about ideas, and as long as you are willing to grapple with ideas and information, you will do fine. If you did any real writing in 134--that is, if you didn't have a dull, basic, easy class for 134, then you should be okay if you take what you learned from there about clarity, organization, and concision, and apply it to this class.

If I could re-do the quarter I would definently take another professor. Professor Wilhelm is a very nice person but she expects A LOT from you. She thinks her class is the most important class you are taking and she is one of the most difficult graders I have had. The main part of this class is a BIG group project which took up all my time. I worked really hard in this class and got a C+. If you go to office hours she will help you when you are there and when you get your paper back you see that you got marked off for what she told you to change. One thing that I have learned from this class is a lot about her family and personal life...is that good? If you have to take her good luck getting a good grade but lectures are not boring at all and we usually got out early.

Mrs. Wilhelm has to be one of the worst teachers I have had at Cal Poly. I worked extremely hard in her class and only got a C. She doesn't present the material very well and she spends way too much time telling stories about her personal life. If you ever have any questions, don't bother going to her office hour because she will just tell you to look it up in the book which is also not very helpful. Other than a HUGE group project over the course of the quarter, there isn't really much homework involved and there is only one midterm. Make sure your project compares to grad student work though because she grades extremely hard. My advice, avoid this teacher at all costs.

If you are thinking of taking wilhelm be prepared to do alot of work and get NOTHING out of it! i took this class while having 20 units and i thought it would be easy, but i definitely took the wrong teacher. Her midterm is ridiculously hard and she grades your writing ridiculously hard. If you bring your work back to her she might change your grade because most of the time she cant back up the grade she gave you. She doesnt really teach you anything, you have to learn it yourself from the book or copy examples from blackboard that she posts. Your final project is a group project so if your teammates slack, your grade hurts. I have never put in so much time and effort into a GE and i only got a C. The good thing about wilhelm.....she is an entertaining teacher and presents the material well. But as the quarter moves along she stops her usual lectures and does nothing in class.

Good class. Wilhelm is entertaining and highly accomodating to any student's needs. The bulk of the class focuses on a huge group project, which sounds annoying but wasn't too bad. The project includes a few memos, the report itself, and a group power pt presentation. If I would have had a crappy group this class would have been have been harder. If there is one thing I am certain of, it is that Wilhelm is by and far the absolute worst excuse for a professor. Her facade of kindness seeks to fill a void, a void that in competent professors, is usually filled with "intelligence". she knows little about the material and merely regergitates it from the book readings if you have a question. the main grade in the class is from a ficticious semblance of a meaningful progect. basically, if you get a bad group, dont expect to get above a C. She's much like a grammar school teacher - takes roll, makes cookies, gives pop quizzes often, and this was the seller...her grammar assignments sent me straight back to 2nd grade. thanks, but no thanks Wilhelm, i already know what a verb is! her usage of pompous academia rhetoric is nausiating. in short, her employment at this institution is not only a complete waste of finances, but a insult to the intellingence of the student body. Do yourself a favor and avoid this professor at all cost, unless of course you are a masochistic ass, paying to be in college to get force-fed putrid cookies by a cunt? love you too deborah...muah!

Last quater my English class was the one I most enjoyed attending but that is mostly cause my business classes bore me. Anyway even though she makes class time interseting and tells lots of stories in her examples I still am not a huge fan of Deborah Wilhelm. I am not a great English student but I was not able to get above a low C on any of the papers we were assigned. She gives you a final paper which ended up being 19 pages for me. Plus there is a ton of formatting and lots of research which take up more time than the writing of the paper itself. I put in over 50 hours into the paper and got a 64% on it. Do not take her as a teacher unless you really want some hardcore writing experience. Wilhelm is a nice lady, but she grades hard, she will not let you turn things in late, and she will not let you make up things that you missed in class (i.e. pop-quizes, writing assignments). She will not make this class easy for you. She seems to grade more on minor gramatical errors than on content. She is a nice lady and will occasionally bring in homemade brownies or rice crispy treats. If you have to take her you might want to see if you could take the class pass/fail. I've never written an eval before on a professor. Yes, she is a tough teacher, but she creates the class around what you (as her class) wants to learn about. I wasn't so sure about her at first, but by the end of the quarter I really enjoyed her class. If she had already said everything she needed to say, she would let us out early. Her grammar quizzes are hard, but relevant in the real world. I learned so much in this class and it challenged me and made me a better writer and communicator. Don't listen to all the negative posts. I'm sure they are based on truth but are way too extreme. I would recommend her to anyone that wants to learn and isn't afraid to work hard.

First off, this class is tough and requires a large amount of time. From what I have heard, other professors teaching ENGL149 are much easier than Ms. Wilhelm. If you want to take this class to get an easy A without spending much time on the projects and learning the material, do not take her. If you would like to challenge yourself and become a better writer, take her. The multiple choice part of the midterm was based entirely on the nightly reading, so if you were not reading, you would not do well. One thing I did not like was how group assignments that took weeks to complete were worth the same amount of points as the quick individual assignments. Other than that, Ms. Wilhelm is a great teacher and you will learn a lot from her if you put in the time.

I would just like a say a few little words to all the students out there that feel the need to bash professor Wilhelm. Stop whining about getting a C! Do you little kids realize that this is college? Getting a C means that you are doing the standard level of work that is expected from college students. College is not supposed to be a cakewalk like high school; it is meant to challenge you. Wilhelm may be a tough grader, but she grades according to the standards that Cal Poly expects its professors to use. If you are already complaining about the grading policies in your G.E. classes then I feel sorry for you. You are going to feel like you hit a brick wall when you get into your upper division classes. Teachers like Wilhelm are only preparing you for the hell that you will face as you climb the collegiate ladder. There is one last thing that I would like to address as well. For those of you that also feel the need to use derogatory terms to describe people: stop it. It only shows your lack of intelligence and your pathetic attempt to cover up your failures as a student.

Her lectures have lots of interaction. SPEND lots of time on the early individual assignments, since the their worth almost as much as MAJOR projects. I guess the class used to be very group based, but ours only had one group project. Pretty much the class was 20% quizes, 30% large group project (that takes a hell of a lot of time), 25% large technical engineering paper (which is also very time consuming), a memo and 2 engineering ethics in-class essays that total 25%. This class easy except for the large projects (2). However, she is a VERY difficult grader. This is a college class. Do not get on her bad side. I made fun of how bad her cookies were once and after that she hated me for the quarter. I got a B-. In Tech Writing! That class is supposed to be easy. At least the work load wasn't as bad as in the other classes, or so I heard. She also made fun of Oregon even though she's from there. She's just from some podunk trailer trash town where she had no friends growing up. I'm from Portland, which is a kick ass city, and I was personally offended by calling everyone from Oregon "hicks." Like most students, I was totally not looking forward to tech writing. Through the years I've seen countless friends suffer through the torture that often accompanies this course. I had been putting this class off for years hoping that maybe it would just go away or something but after registering for 149 twice before and dropping both times after looking at the syllabus, I finally found my way to Professor Wilhelm's class. Her course was by far the most informative english course I have every taken. She actually knows and emphasizes the skills that engineers will need to utilize to effectively communicate in the workplace for the rest of their careers. There\'s a bunch of reading here and there, but nothing dense. There were weekly grammar quizzes, which she called puzzles, and a end-of-the-quarter project that helped very much. She is a harder grader, but knowing how some people are in industry, she\'s fair. If you make some effort and do some reading, you can pass with a C. You have to put a bunch of effort to get an A.

Don’t do it! She is unorganized and forgets everything. She has too many things going on at once and does not have time for any of them. Don’t get me wrong, she is not a Grinch, but she is also not the professor you want to take for this class. If you do take her be sure to read the syllabi. Whenever you turn something in make sure that you have checked it for all spelling errors and that if it is an assignment with numbers, they are all aligned and right justified. Beware, if you take her! Oh and her instructions for the assignments that are due are extremely vague.

All the comments below just weren't a good representation of my experience in Professor Wilhelm's class, so I decided to write my own. I had been afraid to take a college level English class because I don't have the greatest writing skills. That being said, I felt totally comfortable in Wilhelm's class. I enjoyed that the class was customizable: you chose which assignments to do, how much they were worth, and when they were due. This made the class fit seamlessly into my otherwise overloaded schedule. In general, I feel that if you put in even an ounce of effort, then you should easily get a B; contrary to many of the posts below, though, it's not impossible (and actually quite easy) to get an A in this class.

Wilhelm was simply a breath of fresh air. I really liked how she let each class choose their own grading scale and main assignments. This class was not horribly time consuming either; the focal point of the class was the group project which was very reasonable thanks to her guidance. Wilhelm is a great professor and her lab days were surprisingly very useful. Overall, I would definitely recommend her.

This professor is quite nice, and she makes the class realistic for her students. She does not ask too much of us (besides her fetish with grammar) and is even nice enough to give us a free pass on homework that is a day late. The reason I grade this professor poorly is that SHE IS HORRENDOUS AT CONVEYING GUIDELINES ABOUT AN ASSIGNMENT UNTIL IT IS DUE. I have heard of many occasions of which half of the classroom had no idea there was a list of requirements for a project on God-knows-what page of her workbook until she discusses it when it is being turned in. She submits vague guidelines online, and never mentions online that there is a page in the workbook that specifies what else is needed for the assignment. Make sure you actually read the syllabus and write down any little comment she says about some page in the workbook correlating to an assignment, because half of the time I had no idea there was a list of guidelines that she strictly enforces for an assignment before it was too late.

Vague instructions on every assignment, and then doesn't understand when people don't meet her standards on assignments. Being the nice teacher that she is doesn't mean anything when the important matters are horrible

Wilhelm was a good teacher and made the class fun. She creeped me out though.

she is cool, very easy class even though I got a D. I have to agree with the person above, she is very creepy, kind of awkward, too much eye movement back and forth, kind of gave me the feeling that she was a closet witch or something. On a side note she dressed well, I dont thin she ever wore the same outfit twice.

Wilhelm was not the best professor ever, but she was okay I guess. Gives a lighter workload than most ENGL 149 professors. What bothered me so much about her is that when she grades assignments, she fails to provide helpful feedback. For example, when she graded my resume, she gave me a C, but gave me almost no feedback on what I could do to improve it. Sure she X'ed a couple of things out, but I would've liked her to tell me why I was given a C, and what I could do to make my resume better. Her group project is pretty lame too, and she did the same thing with giving very little feedback along the way. She's really into "peer editing", and expects us to use that to guide us, as unhelpful as it is. Overall, Wilhelm is survivable, if you get stuck with her it's not the end of the world, but there are better professors out there.

She's really good. She very clearly articulates what she expects of you and how she wants it to happen. We worked a bit on resumes, cover letters, professional emails, etc. We also had these grammar editing paragraphs that are so annoying and hard, so that sucked. Then, instead of a normal project, she uses this new one. She paired groups with a teacher in some school district in Oregon and we had to create a lesson plan for the students. It was a fairly simple project, mostly because my group actually did good work and we had almost ALL class time to work on it. It was fun, but make sure you stay on top of it. She's a very harsh grader I think, if you want an A you really need to do her definition of above and beyond. Overall I'd say she's a solid tech writing professor.

AWESOME IN OFFICE HOURS. If you are struggling in her class and not sure what she wants from you go to office hours she will give you exactly what you need to succeed. She lets the class out early most of the time and she makes the class fun. She does grade hard though on your turned in projects and that is why you should have her review it in office hours before you turn it in. Definitely recommend her.

This class was a huge waste of time. Several days you do nothing but play with legos or hold hands and do team building exercises. I've learned more about technical writing in my engineering classes. She is not helpful in office hours, followed all of her suggestions on final project and still didn't do well. Its an easy B but take it with someone else because you don't learn much with Wilhelm. As other people have said she is nice but in a creepy sort of overly friendly way.

Fine professor for ENGL 149. Had her during a quarter where she decided to have individual final papers. It was long but not impossible. Don't be lazy, don't slack off, and you'll be fine. ENGL 149 itself isn't actually that useful of a class but doing some resume work and learning how to write something huge under a stricter time constraint than in high school was good enough.

This woman is an idiot. You will learn nothing from her course that any intelligent fourth grader doesn't already know. Her grading is conveniently set up so that the parts of the course that reflect your writing skills and technical knowledge have very little impact on your final grade; the only thing that matters is an incredibly subjective final paper that allows her to fail students she doesn't like (which she does, often). Nothing in the class is well defined or explained, especially the final paper, so succeeding in her class is a combination of luck and ass-kissing. If you're like me and think grades should reflect skill and knowledge and not sucking up, don't take this class, or this professor, ever.

In 302, you read 3 books with pop reading quizzes, have 2 in-class essays that can count for GWR credit if you pass, take grammar quizzes at the end of each week, have random out of class assignments, and you will write a 10-15 page paper that is due during finals week. The paper has many components that includes a topic proposal, an outline, a literary review with your introduction, a rough draft of the paper 2 weeks before it is due, and the final paper with a letter of transmittal. Although the class is a lot of work, and I hated taking the grammar quizzes, I did come out of it a better writer, which is the only reason why I took it. If you are going to take this class purely for the GWR credit, don't. It is too much work if you are only doing it for GWR. I would instead study and take the GWR test, rather than spend a whole quarter in a class that requires a lot of work. Besides, you are not guaranteed to pass the GWR in the class (some students didn't). I would only take this class if you enjoy reading (a lot of reading), grammar, and writing.

She is my favorite professor at cal poly. Her class was rough and so much writing! but i really did get some knowledge out of this class. The women loves for everyone to read and write about food though. within the first 2 weeks we had read one book and written 3 mini essays in this class you have two chances GWR credit. There are in class essays, out of class writing, and dread grammar quizzes. I had a really hard time with these grammar quizzes at first. Stick with it. she will work with you. I picked up a few grammar tips. I really like Wilhelm because everything that we wrote had a purpose. Wilhelm always has us keep an audience in mind. Wilhelm is a fair grader--not easy, but not ridiculous. Take this class and your writing will improve. I loved her.

If you need to improve your writing, I highly recommend this course. It also fulfills the GWR. THe workload isn't too difficult. Part of your grade is to read two books and write two in-class essays. If you prepare for these essays, by thinking about the ideas you can write about, it should be easy to get a B on them. THere are also two essays that we write at home and one of them is worth a lot of points. The key is to write about something you're interested in, and you'll enjoy doing it. Dr. Wilhelm is a good professor and if you put effort into your work, you should do fine.
