Orling is an awesome professor. He presents the material in a manner that is so clear and easy to understand you get it the first time. He gives homework assignments that directly reflect the test, and I mean directly. He goes over the test and quiz material in the class prior to the test day. He tells you the topic, and chapters that are weighed most heavily and gives you a good idea of what to study. That way you can spend your time studying rather than worrying about whether or not you are studying the right material. Orling is the best, take him if you get the chance.

This power point guru is amazing. I learned a lot in Orling's class even though it was fairly easy. His lectures are pretty weel structured and tie in really well with MATE 215. You need to read the book and go over powerpoint slides for the tests. There are some easy calculations that you should go over for about half the tests as well. Orling gives out a great deal of extra credit which really helps in the long run. I'd take him for anything he teaches.

Orling is the person to take for this class! I heard so mush bitching about the other teacher in this subject and everytime I heard that I laughed my ass off. Orling is a pretty good lecturer, all the lectures are powerpoint, and will only test on stuff that he spent a good amount of time on in class. He only gives quizzes and gives plenty of extra credit. If you do poorly in this class it's because you either didn't go to class, and I even wonder about that, or you are a mistake by the office of admissions. Take this guy!

This guy is great. He began every class with a PSA about how little sleep he got, told a stupid joke or something, then started lecture. Super easy, super nice, super happy, he's just super. The material is easy enough, and he's sure a hell of a lot easier than the other MATE 210 teacher (Kathy Chen.) Anyone who gets less than a 'B-' in his class should be put to sleep.

I unfortunately took this class at 7am but it came out to my advantage becuase he would offer a lot of extra credit to those who actually showed up. Even if i did miss class it was ok becuase all his lectures were based off powerpoint so even if you missed class you could go to his website and see exactly what you would have had you attended class. The class was extremmely easy. He had a quiz on monday, miniquiz the next monday and thats how it was every week so you never really needed to remember most of the stuff for more than 2 weeks. He also offered a lot of extra credit besides the attending class in the early morning.

Orling is great. He doesn't expect everyone to be hardcore MATE students. He knows people need this class but don't care too much about materials. He teaches on an appropriate level. Not only that, he teaches with passion so the class turns out to be more interesting than I expected. He grades easy as long as you come to class because he tells you what's on the tests. He's a great person too.

Orling kicks so much ass. First of all, the material is easy as shit and if you don't know it very well already or you have trouble picking it up (i.e. your a dumbass) then Orling will be able to explain it to you and you'll understand it forwards and backwards. But if you never show up to lecture and you don't know your ass from a thermoplastic you'll get opportunities to revive your grade. Don't do that though; go to lecture, it is fun and very informative. I only took 210 with him and I couldn't get him for 215 but if I had to take more MATE classes I would try hard to get Orling.

Orling is F***ing rad. Lie, cheat and/or steal to get his class. You have to try really hard to fail, but don't. His class was actually interesting and fun. If you're lucky enough to land a spot in his class and are not afraid of faculty, do yourself a favor and get to know the guy.

Tim Orling should be the only professor teaching MATE210 (if it were possible for him to teach in 7 tedious classes a week). He grades fair, gives a fair work load, and weekly quizzes to keep you on your toes. I still cannot believe that this guy WANTS his students to get an 'A' in the course. Thank you so much Professor Orling!

HOLY COW!!! One of the easiest A's Ive gotten at Cal Poly for a support course. Take him for Mate 210 if you can. He gives lots of extra credit. Do well on the short quizzes during the year and you will get an A too. You have to work really hard to get anything less than a C. TAKE HIM, TAKE HIM, TAKE HIM

Ok, first things first, Orling is not a Professor. Being a Professor requires a Ph.D., which he does not have. Tim spent 8 years trying to get his Ph.D. and walked away with nothing. He is probably a marginal instructor, if he can keep his hands off the teenage women in his course. Take a look at the prior ratings, don't they all seem to be written by the same person? Nice try Tim.

If you are interested in Materials Engineering do not take this professor. Has a marginal command of the material, even though it is introductory in nature. Pays a lot of attention to female students. As an ME, this is the only exposure I will get to Materials and this guy was horrible.

I would recommend taking Professor Orling. He is very easy to understand, and he gets the information across to you very well. His grading style is very fair, with a few quizzes and 2 midterms, then the final. He also gives a little extra credit. MATE 210 is supposed to be just a survey class, and he definately teaches it that way. He won't make you go too in depth in any of the subject matter because of this.

Prof. Orling's a nice guy. Class was informative and pretty good overall. Grading was a little strange. His grader would sometimes brutalize the class on quiz grades (like 50% avg.), but Orling didn't seem to curve these at all like he said he would. I got an A on the final, a high A on a midterm, and a B on a midterm, doing above average on all quizzes, and I still got a B in the class. Just thought I'ld get an A. Overall, I would recommend this teacher. Had him for Lab, too. Got an A there, was a cool lab, but you will stay to the end.

A Professor has a Ph.D. (an earned Doctorate), Tim chose not to complete his, therefore, he is not a Professor he is a lecturer. And remember there is no such thing as A.B.D (all but dissertation), to quote Yoda, "there is do or do not". Tim did not.

Professor Orling isn't a very good professor overall, but he's really easy. So if you want to skate through MATE 210 with no difficulties, take this guy. If you actually want to learn the material well, you may want to look elsewhere. I appreciated getting a B with little effort, but I really didn't learn much of anything. He just does powerpoint slides for the lectures, which are really boring. There's not really any reason to open the book, as homework isnt collected. Overall I would recommend taking him if you just want to get this class done with, as I did.

Despite what others have stated previously about his easy, "skate-through" mate 210 course, things have apparently changed. The department cracked down on him for giving out too many good grades and told him to stiffen up a little bit, so he returned this quarter as a full, raging prick. Orling grades super picky, like losing points for things that have nothing to do with your full comprehension and mastery of the material, just that it doesn't please him. Tim is the most irresponsible professor I have had yet. He refused to grade our exams and quizzes, so going into the final we know only about 20% of what our grade is. He had one out of two midterms graded and handed back to us and one out of four quizzes graded and handed back, so I could have been going into the final with an A or a D, I had no idea! I would really not recommend him to anyone, he is a below standard lecturer and carries with him a pompous, condescending attitude as if any question you ask is completely below the knowledge level you should be at. He deserves a strong sock in the mouth if you ask me.

Orling is a good guy. Our class didn't care, but he still tried to get us to care. Test are very straight forward. You don't really have to do much to pass them. Take him.

This class is definately not as easy as it once was. Orling is completely irresponsible. We had all of 2 out of 8 quizes, and 1 of our midterms graded by the time we had to take the final. Nobody knew what grade they had!!! I was seriously dissappointed in this class. I had a kick-ass lab instructor but Orling really pissed me off with his consistant tardiness both to class and office hours, lack of consistant grading, and lack of any grading for that matter!!! Don't take him!

This guy is a great teacher. He has everything you need to know organized on his little slideshow presentations. He knows the material really well. The tests and quizzes aren't that hard at all. Watch out for the final though, it's different from his other tests and pretty hard.

Orling is by far the weirdest teacher I have ever had. He was 20 minutes late to class once and his excuse was he felt convicted that he needs a solar powered scooter... I kid you not. Would have been an easy class if he graded stuff. Didnt get our first midterm back till I was walking out the door after just finishing the second one. And I still have no clue what I got on my second one... Same with all our quizzes. HOWEVER he always had time to grade his other classes assignments. Not that bad a lecturer, but his laziness made him a horibble teacher last qtr.

I just have to say that Orling did not live up to the hype from Poly Ratings or from what people said. He wasn't that easy although he wasn't pverly hard either. My complaint is that he would ask inane questions to the class and then get upset when no one could (would) answer. He always threatened us with getting a bad grade if we don't participate and he would often make whoever does try to answer, feel dumb if they get the answer wrong. Overall, he isn't a great teacher but if your other option is London, try him out. Just don't expect the great teacher everyone talks about. By the way, if you do his practice tests, the in class ones are pretty easy.

He was a little bit unusual, but he was very helpful in running the labs. They were all easy to follow and he was always helpful. He made the lab final easier than previous quarters and I know that almost everyone had an A or B going into the final. He seems like he would also be a good teacher for the lecture.

This class was horribly boring. It lasted the whole time, maybe we would get out about 20 before it was over. It is very easy to get a good grade in, just pay attention to the reading and the quizes online. Other than the prereading there is no work outside of class.
