This class was pretty good. She is usually a Lit teacher, and that showed. We read a lot, but the text was ok (lots of pictures). There were 3 in-class essay (which were graded difficultly) and 3 out-of-class essays. We had four editing quizes and five reading quizes, non of which were too difficult. She is a genuinely nice person, and i would take her again, but for a literature class.

really good teacher! I just got a C becuase as you we'll notice in this evaluation I can't spell and have no grammer. this is one great teacher grades a little hard but is real reasonable. I really like her class and actully learend a thing or two and the stories we have to read are really intersting. You'll actully want to do the reading! the papers topics aren't that bad its like tell a story about a daily ritual you take for granted or talk about a tv commercial how it makes you want to have want I did it on mentos. take this teacher she is good.

Curiel is a horrible composition teacher (she married a dirty mexican, C'mon!). To further elaborate, she did not ever explain how to write an essay, or give examples of essays. She also, forces idiodic reading quizes and grammar quizes on you, in addition to that she tries to make you tie in your reading as support for the essays you write in class, which makes it a hell of a lot harder. Take Steiner! Steiner is awsome!

Curiel is a terrible teacher. She teachers you nothing about a the structure of document design. She only makes you read a bunch of worthless crap, and somehow expects you to magically pull a well organized essay out your but.

I truly enjoyed Dr. Curiel's 134 Composition class. Take her if you have the opportunity. The class consisted of 3 in class essays, 3 out of class essays, 4 grammar tests and various notebook assignments. Her topics on the essays were very reasonable. She really understands how to make college level writing better. She takes time to make sure you understand what your writing about and is very helpfull in office hours. Plus, in the middle of the quarter, we had a week off class so she could confrence with us individually, which was perty damn cool! She does talk about her kids a lot but if you dont mind that, shes a great teacher.

I am not good at English at all and I struggled in this class. I enjoyed her class and she was good at keeping my interest. The majority of the points were from 3 out of class essays and 3 inclass essays, the rest of the points came from journal entries we did throughout the quarter. The highest grade on the first essay in our class was a C, she is not an easy grader but she gives opportunities to make up the points lost on the first essay. Use her office hours, she is very helpful and adds a lot of substance to essays that she is looking for. Have a few people who are good at English edit your essays before turning them in. I would recommend her for any class.

She is very boring and unless she licks you won't get a good grade. She grades very hard. If you are a conservative don't take this class because you will get very irritated with her liberal mind. It's her way or nothing. A very bad teacher.

she was a nice teacher but grades very difficultly. I went to her office several times to go over my essays and get assistance and still recieved a D on almost every paper. She acts like we all should write like we have PHDs like she does. I recommend someone else.

curiel is one of those teachers that thinks her class is the only class on your schedule for that quarter. its a common problem for english teachers cuz they know their field is useless to most after they graduate. she gives 3 big essays totaling about 22 pgs and worth 40% of your grade. and in between the big essays she has 5 \"short writing assignments\" that are not even close to being short. and when you aren\'t busy doing those two assignments she gives bookwork/busywork just about every night. i got a 6.5 out of 15 on a paper worth 15% which is the only reason i didn\'t get a B so be careful

seriously-- english 145 is suppose to be easy, all my friends sailed through english 145, had no homework and got A's... if you want that then i HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!!! we had a quiz basically every day on the reading, plus a paper every week and a 10page paper at the end of the quarter.... too much work for such a simple class!!! i hated this class, nice lady-- but a shit load of homework!!!!!

If you like constant busy work and essays then this is the class for you. She talks constantly and is very boring. Way too much work for a GE class

Dr. Curiel is a very good teacher. She cares about her students and she is really knowledgeable. I also took Curiel's English 134 class which was also a really great class. I recommend her to all my friends.

Curiel was an overall good teacher. For the students that made an effort to go to class, and office hours, she was more than willing to help you. However, she graded rather difficult. She only wanted to see her opinions in your writing and took points away if your opinion differed from hers.

Professor Curiel is a very difficult grader. I got a D on two of my essays but some how managed to get a B- in the class. Our class consisted of basically 3 essays, a final test and in class essay, and a bunch of quizzes (almost one every day). It was important to read the material she assigned for homework because her quizzes covered the little details that are easily forgotten in the reading. The quizzes were often done in groups though which made it a little easier. She is pretty vague in her essay assignments so it is difficult to understand exactly what she wants in the paper. She is very intelligent though and I enjoyed listening to what she had to teach. I have never been a fan of english class, but she was probably one of the better english teachers I have had.

Carol Curiel is a very smart lady who knows a lot about English. However, I would STRONGLY discourage anyone from taking this class. There's a reading quiz every single class, and you'll spend four hours a week listening to legitimate garbage. She's one of those teachers who says something you could say in 2 minutes in 60. Not to mention there's no grade difference based on how much time/effort you put into an essay. Sure, you can try going in for help, and she'll tell you your paper is good/what you need to work on. And then you get a C- on it...? I guess math isn't her strong subject. Lastly, her lectures are painfully and excruciatingly dull. If you like to listen to a bat shit crazy lady with a high pitched voice talk about premises and conclusions, this is the class for you!!

Dr. Curiel is the epitome of a GE teacher who thinks the school revolves around her class. There are reading quizzes every day on a textbook thats very bland and dull. The quizzes are hard, the questions are very analytical, just doing the reading is not enough. There are 5 papers you have to do and her grading is way off. The fourth paper i turned in i spent 20+ hours on it and got a 72 based on grammar errors(which was understandable). But i went to her office hours and she was of no help. I spent 30 + hours on the last research paper (around 10 pages), went to her hours consistently working on my structure and fixing my grammar. By the end she said i had a great work in progress and that I should touch it up/revise it a few more times, which i did. Turned it in and got a 62 (D-) in which her reasoning was that my argument structure and purpose was off. She wrote that it was a large improvement over my previous essay which i got a 72 on. I dont get her grading system or what goes on in her head, DONT take her for 145, take coms 145 with Nolan and get it over with.

Curiel is a very nice lady. However, her class is solely through her perspective. For the first 5 weeks of class, we essentially talked of nothing else but feminism and women's rights. I'm not against that, but it seemed like if you disagree with her your grade will reflect it. She also gives reading quizzes at least once a week, usually more, which are a joke, even if you do read. I tried to read every night, but sometimes I would forget. My grades on the reading quizzes would never really show the difference. Basically, if you suck up to her and show an interest in class you will do OK. I've never been that type of person though, so I guess I'll have to take the grade I got. Bottom line, don't take her if there are other professors available.

I'm usually good at English, but Curiel assigns way too much reading, then expects you to know every detail about what you read. You have a group quiz or individual quiz every single day and the questions are extremely confusing and badly worded. Our first essay was worth 10 points and was 10% of our grade. That is ridiculous! She does not explain her essays or assignments well and I leave the classroom feeling confused and stressed. Not everyone likes or is good at English, so give us a break. I thought I should just take this class even though she has bad ratings, but trust me and please wait to take it with a different professor.

Mrs. Curiel is a nice lady but the polyratings speak for themselves, she assigns too much busy work, grades very hard, and her directions are not clear.

She's a nice person. Be prepared, this is a lot of work for a GE. Get over it though! This is college! She does grade pretty tough, but oh well. I'm done with my A3!

So i didn't listen to all of the reviews under me, but please listen to them! Don't take Curiel!!!! She gives ALOT of work, which I'm okay with since this is college, but she grades extremely hard. I would work hours on papers and turn them in and either get a D or a low C. The only reason I was able to pull off a B is because I had to redo three of six of them, and it wasn't just me, almost everyone would be upset with their grades. She is very unfair and expects you to be a perfect writer! She's very nice in class and acts like you have nothing to worry about on you're assignments, but don't be fooled the assignments are difficult and very unclear. YOU WILL REGRET TAKING HER.

Professor Curiel is super nice and extremely helpful if you ask for it. Her class seems difficult in the beginning but as it passes you start to get the hang of what she's looking for and what it takes to get a good grade in the class. In the beginning I found myself stressing over it but by the end I barely put any work in and ended up with an A. The homework load is a bit much but it can easily be cut from your study session without severe consequences. The final though was pretty difficult and her grading can be tough but she will tell you exactly what to do if you ask for help. She also has an impressively extensive knowledge about literature and writing.

I spent the whole quarter hating Curiel. Her voice is annoying as hell, she's scatterbrained, her hair always looks dirty, and did I mention her voice...?? Her voice is the worst. She gave a quiz almost every class (about half were groups quizzes) over the reading from the textbook. You'd think reading an english textbook would be pointless, but be forewarned, the quizzes are EXTREMELY specific to the book so you have to read every time just in case it's a solo quiz. To be honest, the book wasn't that bad...it had a lot of pictures and it was pretty concise so I didn't really mind reading it. Aside from the quizzes, there are 2 research papers. The instructions for the papers are super vague so GO TO OFFICE HOURS BEFORE STARTING THE PAPER. If I had done this, it would've saved me a lot of time and stress. This class is extremely boring, but in the end, I got an A. Not an A-, an A. I don't know how the hell that happened since I don't think I got a single A on any assignment in this class. I think she curved a lot. That's the only explanation. In light of this, I've decided that--despite her shortcomings--I would take Curiel again for the sole reason that she's helpful in office hours and she curves the class a lot.

Curiel doesn't teach you anything. Basically the whole class is her standing in front of the room and telling you that the only right answer is her own. It doesn't matter how well you know the material or how much you know on a subject if Curiel has an opinion on it she's right. She also doesn't have you do MLA format, she calls it MLA but really it's just you doing it how she wants you to. I'm not an idiot I do know how to cite and put things into MLA format and never have I seen someone say that MLA format according to all the books and websites is wrong and her version is right. If you ever are in this class I suggest you drop it. She's not worth your time or effort. She is a terrible professor and I don't know how a woman as close minded and for lack of better words, idiotic as her became a professor here at Cal Poly. Curiel I honestly hope you are reading this. When only one student in all your English 145 classes barely passes the midterm it is the students that are the problem, it is the teacher. Telling us that we all obviously need to study more is ludicrous, if you would actually teach the class and be a real English teacher maybe your students would have better test scores and maybe we wouldn't all despise going to your class. I strongly suggest retirement for you. You would be doing the students of Cal Poly a favor.

dont take her... i guess shes a "nice" lady, but a shitty ass professor. just assigns stupid busy work on stupid assignments, doesnt explain them well, and gives reading quizzes on top of it. just a cunt that assigns boring assignments and likes to laugh about how they shouldnt be too time consuming when really itll be something like an 11 question paper with three sub parts to each question on specific examples from the boring ass reading she assigns. worst english class ever. boring with mass busy work

Although Professor Curiel seemed like a truly wonderful person, I dreaded going to her class 4 days a week. I have never had an issue attending classes, and in fact I have always attended classes whether the teacher took attendance or not. With that being said however, I have never felt like I have had my time wasted as much as I did in Curiel's class. She handed out endless amounts of paper work that you would need to collect and keep organized until the end of the year, and she claimed that these papers would help us form our final paper, but really it was just tedious and unnecessary. I take huge pride in my writing and have always excelled in English classes, but I found myself in a constant state of frustration. No matter how hard I tried, I could not succeed in her class. She had a lot of preconceived expectations and she did a very poor job of conveying those expectations to her class. I found that she assigned lots of writing with very little instruction, or too much in some cases. For one of our papers, she gave us 3 different rubrics (all slightly different). I attempted to go into office hours several times for clarification and almost always left more confused. Curiel is a great person, clearly very kind and down to earth, but I would highly recommend finding another teacher for English 145.

She's really nice and excited to teach however she doesn't transfer her knowledge very well. She gives very specific quizzes, a good amount of assignments and a fat paper at the end. Also the midterm average was below fifty percent but she did allow us to take a much easier retake.

When you first look at Curiel's Polyratings, I guarantee you will avoid her at all costs, or dread your first day of class. Personally, the first half of this class was a living nightmare. But once the second half began, everything she taught previously started coming together and making more sense. Yes, the course load is incredibly heavy, but for most of us, this is the last class we must take to fulfill the A area of our GEs. Remembering this got me through the class. I honestly hated going to this class for the first 5 weeks. It truly ruined my days. However, during the last half, I started emailing her more, going to office hours, and trying to actually understand the course material to the level that she encouraged us to. After doing this, the course was a breeze - just tedious. She is actually a very sweet and kindhearted woman. I started to really enjoy her as a professor, and realized that she was actually preparing us to write papers that will be respected by scholars, not simple 5 paragraph essays that our high school teachers wanted. The grading consists of quizes, attendance, and a midterm, with the final paper that you write over the course of 6 weeks being worth 50% of your grade (including her Lit Review). Overall, I would not recommend her if you are trying to take an 'easy' class. But if you really want to improve your writing and argumentation, she is definitely the right professor. Just push through the first half and the last half will yield great reward.

Carol is the worst. She expects you to know exactly what she is looking for with very little detail given. She acts like her class is easy, laid back, and fun but she grades very harshly. Even if you go to her office hours, she will tell you your paper is looking great and then give you a D. avoid taking her AT ALL COSTS. This is a GE class, and is way more work then any of my major classes. She gives almost daily quizzes on reading and you have to remember VERY specific details of the reading. Even if you did read, the quizzes were impossible. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.

Dr. Curiel was honestly one of my favorite professors my freshman year. Some may not like the busy work that she constantly has us complete, but in the end I believe it actually did increase my understanding of the course objectives. Overall, the course is mainly short readings and small GROUP quizzes the next day. If everyone does poorly on the quiz, she is super understanding and includes bonus points on the next quiz. Also, participation is worth just as much as quizzes, so even if you fail a quiz, chances are it isn't going to kill your grade in the end. She is super understanding if you are having problems outside of class and is super helpful during office hours. In comparison to other English 145 classes, she only assigns one true essay that is due during finals week but is assigned the second or so week of the quarter. My friends with other English 145 teachers have said that their teacher had upwards of five essays due throughout the quarter and seemed to be in much greater states of distress than I have ever been for this course. She has two official tests called the core concepts exams and she outlines very clearly what you need to know for them. Seriously recommend taking her class.

Terrible teacher, not a very likable person either. Her class was confusing and pointless, I didn't learn anything and everyone was always complaining about the bad grades she gave them and how bad her directions were. It's not an extremely hard class if you put in effort, but she literally talks about who knows what all class and then drops the "oh and that assignment is due tomorrow" bomb on you right at the end. Also really salty that she's divorced, and definitely an opinionated liberal beeyotch if that bothers you.

Prof. Curiel is a nice woman but not a good professor. She does not present the material very clearly and is very nit-picky on her reading quizzes. Throughout the entire quarter, I never understood her grading and evaluation process. It felt like no matter how hard I tried, I could never improve my writing skills. I did not learn anything valuable from this course and I do not recommend taking this class.

I really liked this class and I am a person who hates English classes. Dr. Curiel is just a really nice lady and I would really recommend her to anyone. We had quizzes a lot at the beginning of the quarter, but they were all group quizzes and pretty short. There were two exams, that were longer, but because this is an "argumentation" class if you put down reasonable answer, even if it is not correct, and can give rational for that answer, you will get a lot of partial credit so you can do pretty well on these. If you do not like writing a lot of essays, we basically only wrote one and while it looks like it is worth 50% of your grade, 20% is just the research for the essay and 10% is for an informal popular version of the essay so the big essay really is only 20%. So many factors go into the class Dr. Curiel really breaks down everything so if you do mess up on something then you can still do well in the class. I was really dreading taking ENGL 145, but this was probably one of the best classes for me to get into. I really would recommend Dr. Curiel for this class!

hey guys. i know that curiel has a lot of negative reviews and it might be scaring you. that's what it did for me! i even tried to get into a different ENGL 145 class cause i was so worried about her difficult quizzes and stuff. but let me tell you, it's wrong! curiel is a great teacher, and my favorite so far. she's understanding and gives easy to understand lectures. she posts all the notes on polylearn too, and all the rubrics she grades off of, so that's helpful. yes, there are quizzes almost everyday on the reading. but! the reading is interesting and super easy, and you're allowed to work in groups and use a half sheet of notes. if you do the reading and understand it the quizzes are really easy. she answers emails punctually and is helpful in answering questions. don't sweat it if you get her, she's really not so bad. P.S: she's a stickler when it comes to MLA 8th edition citations. learned that lesson the hard way.

FIRST OFF, I was scared shitless after reading the reviews, and almost switched out of her class but thank god I didn't. Curiel is the BEST: -all quizzes are group quizzes (Sit with someone smart. duh.) -she Rounds grades (visit her HO though!!!) -the Story Board and Record of Research (you will know what Im talking about when u get 3/4 of the way in) are graded SUPER EASY -she lets you retake your Midterm (Core concepts Exam 1, for up to 80% if you didn't do great) -everything on Finals is covered in class or on quizzes! (she even Hints at possible questions in class) She is also extremely charming, obviously an expert on the topic, and Really wants to help you succeed!! (if you need an extension on an assigment you can probably get one!) The one thing I would say is if you don't put in effort (legitimately don't even open the book for quizzes, write assignments 20 min before they are due) don't expect a good grade. I have a feeling many of the people on here are not giving her a fair evaluation because they expected to get handed an A for doing nothing bc its a GE English class. IMPORTANT: she is very picky about: -MLA -Citations (Maybe see the writing center before turning a paper in if this is not your thing?) - also DONT turn in assignments late, definitely NOT worth the missed points (just ask for an extension!!)

Curiel is a wonderful professor, seriously, she rocks! If you put effort in during class, she will make sure you get an A in the class. She sets up the final paper to make sure you know how to do it in future classes and while its a little tedious at the time, it really helps in later classes. There is a reading quiz everyday (or week) but you get to use notes, and take them in a group, and skimming the chapter was enough to ace them. She wants her students to succeed so just talk with her after class about questions or anything and she will help you when you need it (also she has so much cool knowledge about so much!). I forgot to submit an assignment and was got a late grade on it and she changed it back to an A before the final without me even mentioning it so I would keep my A instead of an A-, seriously, she wants you to do well!

Curiel is literally one of the smartest people I've ever met. She knows more about literature than any professor I've taken, and brings you to new levels of understanding with your reading. The only downside to this is that she can talk forrreeevvveeerrr. She has tons to say on every line of poetry or prose and will always keep you in class til the last minute. The first half of the quarter is an insane workload - you get through The Odyssey in a matter of two weeks, and absolutely must do the reading because she quizzes you on it, in detail. Two essays, one midterm and a final (short answer/essay), and she is a VERY hard grader. She's more than willing to help if you make it to her office hours, and is willing and available to meet and work around your schedule. Still, she's crazy smart, and it's virtually impossible to bullshit your way through her class. Be prepared to learn a lot, and work for your grade.

Curiel is wack. We had two essays for the quarter, a "short" one (4 pages) and a "long" one (6 pages). For both of these essays, I took my rough drafts into her office to get her input on how to improve them; the first essay, she said was solid and told me things to do to get an A. I got the paper back, with a ton of different things marked wrong - things she had not even told me she had a problem with! The second paper, she said was "in the A territory", and again told me how to improve. I did exactly as she asked, and once again, it came back full of comments that she hadn't even asked me to fix. I ended up getting a B- on both essays, and a B- in the class. Incredibly hard grader, not helpful to students whatsoever. Curiel is full of shit.

Dr. Curiel is a good teacher. It is amazing how thoroughly she knows the material and helps students to explore the analytical aspect of reading literature. I wouldn't take this class unless you are an English major or find yourself to be particular good at English because you have to read A LOT and although she is fair in her grading, she is not very forgiving; it seemed very difficult to get an A.

So here's the deal. Dr. Curiel is probably one of the most intelligent people I've ever meet. She's so smart, though, that she simply cannot get on the level of the average Poly student. The workload for this class is insane. On average, 60 pages of reading during the week and over 100 for the weekend. Also, she grades her essays like a maniac. MEAN COMMENTS EVERYWHERE, and a mean grade to match. Classes are PAINFULLY boring, but there's a reading quiz every class (they get exponentially harder as the quarter goes on), so you pretty much have to always go to class. I'd say avoid her if you can. If not, you'll survive.

Professor Curie knows her stuff. She is kindhearted and passionate about the books we read. She smiles a lot, laughs, and loves to hear students' perspective. There are quizzes nearly every day based on the reading (lots of reading.. like basically a new book/chunk of chapters every day or every two days - total of 13 books - some are short and some are very long). There are individual quizzes and group quizzes (mostly group) and student group led discussions every Friday. You have to write two discussion reflection papers and a big paper relating some of the books of choice. I wasn't into the Greek gods and topics of that nature.. but if you're into that stuff you'll LOVE this course.

Really interesting class actually. she knows her stuff... and is excited to share with you. I actually learned more than i expected coming into it. She grades a little on the harder side, but she does let you know what she is looking for instead of vague directions.

Dr. Curiel expects a lot from her students. Some might say too much from students taking ENGL 252 for a GE. The class is not easy, and of course there is a heavy reading load. The reading schedule isn't impossible and the essay topics are interesting. If you want to get a good grade on the essays--be as thorough as possible in your analysis and revise, revise, revise. Don't expect Curiel to recognize your self-described brilliance in a paper you crammed out the day before. Be clear, concise and extremely picky/critical. If you want a class where you aren't expected contribute, work hard or learn anything... don't take Curiel.

Excellent professor. I don't know what all these people are talking about, but the reading to me seemed light and can be finished in an hour or so. The lecture isn't as boring as they say it is and I actually find it entertaining maybe because I sit at the back of the class and rests my head on the board. Her grading seemed fair to me and so are the quizzes. I mean you guys realize you are in Cal Poly don't you? If you want easy A and workload you can finish in 15 minutes just go to a community college or something.

She acts as if her class is your only class. Assigns a huge amount of work. Lecture is basically her sitting in front of the class talking about the readings and making things up about them. I don't know where she came up with half the stuff she talked about. She makes you read like 15 different stories and expects you to know specific unimportant details about each one. She gave 12 in-class quizes and droped the two lowest, because everyone needed it. There was one midterm and a final both of which were rediculously specific and she graded extreamly hard. She curved the midterm like 45 points out of 150. You also have to write 3 essays of which you have to basically write what she says in lecture about the stories or you will get a very low grade. Don't take her if you at all have a choice!

Carol is a very nice woman, but a very boring professor. She assigns reading like there is no tomorrow. I read sparknotes and did better on quizzes than students who actually read the material. The class consisted of her talking the whole two hours every lecture. If you don't have coffee, don't bother coming to class. I have to take a C4 next quarter and class was the only one open, so I'm going to wait for the quarter after the next. Learned my lesson! Never taking her again!

This class wasn't that bad. A decent amount of reading each night but if you keep up youll be fine. There are individual and group quizzes which both arent bad and they all have extra credit questions and you can work in whatever size groups you want for the group quizzes. There are two essays and a group presentation which she grades kinda hard, but she also accepted a paper I was supposed to turn in week five after I took the final. Lectures are pretty boring but I never listened and I did fine in the class. Just do the work and youll be ok.

She is a very smart lady. Her lectures are pretty boring. The workload isn't terrible, make sure you try really hard on the forum posts because they're worth more than you think. Her grading is insane. I would like to think that I am a good writer, I've never gotten lower than a B+ on a paper (high school and college). She gave me Cs on both of the papers. After getting a C on the first paper, I went over my second paper with her before turning it in and I still got a C on it. She expects way more than she should, she looks for very very specific details. I would avoid her if you can, especially if you're not happy about having a GE as your lowest grade.

Take this class even if you don't like reading!!! I hate reading bc I'm a really slow reader so I was really dreading taking a literature class and I'm so glad I took Dr. Curiel. She honestly made me like reading more but if I didn't have time to read bc of other shit it always turned out fine. Even if you just read sparknotes and understand what's going on you'll be fine. The reading quizzes she gives are super easy (can get 100% from reading sparknotes) and have extra credit points on them. The grade in the class is based off reading quizzes, small group quizzes (open book and open note, I got near 100% on all of them), two papers, and the final. Anyone that says she expects too much of people is an idiot - I did almost none of the assigned reading aside from sparknotes and just payed attention in class and ended up with an A. 10/10 would recommend

I came into this class kind of dreading it at the beginning of the quarter because the syllabus said all the books we had to read like Beowulf, The Inferno, and Don Quixote. Yet, I did not know how much I would actually enjoy the readings. Usually, it is assigned every night but is relatively short( 5-10 pages). Sometimes there are longer readings that are assigned on the weekends so there is plenty of time to do it. Even though Sparknotes can be helpful to skim or to pick up on details that you didn't understand, still make it a job for you to actually read to see every detail because she assigns 9 solo quizzes, each with 1 bonus point. Instead of midterms, there are 3 group quizzes which are with more points but are nice (she curves these too). Professor Curiel herself is extremely nice and passionate about old literature. She has this infectious charisma about these books that at the end of the quarter it might possibly rub off on you. Overall, she is a good professor and I would recommend taking her. Just don't be a dick weed and expect to get an A on papers. Take time to revise them and meet with her in OH to make sure you are accurately capturing all the details she wants to read.

Dr. Curiel was a very good professor. During the quarter the class had to do two essays, and had to read 8 books. Including 2 poems. The class was very tiring because almost everyday we went to class we had a quiz on the reading, so if you take her you have to come to class prepared and there's no bullshitting on the quizzes because she will more than likely know if you are. Her two midterms were tough and for the final she decided to give the option of taking the final or writing a paper. She is very picky about details and her midterms are long- 3 short answers, 1 essay and 5 identifications. Overall i learned a lot but she was very difficult.

Mrs. Curiel did an excellent job presenting the material she so clearly knows by heart. It is obvious she has a passion for her job and the books she teaches on. Although I wouldn't consider myself a big fan of early 20th century literature, she made the lectures interesting and selected a canon that was highly contiguous. It's true that her midterm/tests were fairly difficult, but the quizes during the quarter show you what she's looking for. I'd highly recommend her for english and non-english majors alike--it was an excellent course taught as well as possible.

An extremely sincere woman who has a vast knowledge of all she teaches. I was quite intimidated by the number of books we were to read, ( i think our class had about 9...)and the first day Prof. Curiel tells you that in order to do well (even to pass) you will have to do all of the assigned readings on time. She means this...you will take a quiz almost every class with questions that aren't found on sparknotes. She is very detail oriented, but in a good way. At first read, many of the books seem boring and unimportant, but Curiel truly does make them thought provoking. She is totally fair, and if her lectures fall behind schedule she will take out a book from the list, which always comes as a great relief. The grading consisited of a midterm and final, both worth 30%, a short paper, 10%, long paper (only 5 pgs though) 20% and daily quizzes 10%. If you are willing to do a lot of reading, you will be greatly rewarded by taking from Prof Curiel. She's a nice mom-like lady, very understanding, and extremely smart.

Dr. Curiel was a difficult professor. She demands a LOT of her students. Be prepared to actually read, SparkNotes do not cut it. The biggest pain in the butt is the quizzes, which are just at random times and before you've ever discussed anyhting in class. Do not be late and do not miss class. The midterm and final are hard and she knows everything about all the works (which there are many of to read), so you can't bullshit. It's also obvious that she likes some people more than others, especially girls. I'm not a girl, so that did not help me. There are also group presentations. Overall, way too much demanded for a 4-unit GE class. Take something else instead.

Dr. Curiel is very straight forward. She presents the material with absolutely no surprises and gives a great deal of extra help. I have heard that many think she grades really hard, but if you are a troubled writer, she is willing to help you revise your papers before you turn them in. If you don't do well on her tests (two, not cumulative) then it is because you either didn't read or didn't listen to her, because she tells you exactly what will be on them and during the tests she will tell you if you are on the right track or not. 10% are quizzes, but if she thinks the class is participating in discussions, she will simply pass around an attendence sheet and give everyone present 100% for the quiz grade. I think we may have had one real quiz, and the rest were all attendence. There are two papers, one for 10% and the other for 20%, due during the fourth-fifth and eighth-tenth weeks (flexible due dates). She is more than willing to hold your hand all the way through these if you are willing to go to office hours. The last 60% are the two tests, and like I said, they aren't cumulative and she tells you what are on them beforehand and helps you during them. All in all, if you are willing to read and go to class, there is no reason to do poorly whatsoever.

The amount of material for a 10 week GE course creates borderline insanity. She is definitely a weird woman, with a strange personality. Plus, she takes forrrreeevvvverrr to grade assignments. And for what reason? For our long papers, she just graded them during our final. Can we say last minute?

Dr. Curiel is different, but very friendly and easy to talk to. There was a lot of reading, but her she makes her tests so if you didn't read a story or two, you can get by. Sometimes her lectures are hard to follow, but if you read the material and come to class with questions, she is very good at answering them.

She's very nice and very helpful. She is also very passionate about the material, although she wants everyone to understand she spends too much time on easy subjects and not enough on harder subjects. Her lectures often ran over 50 minutes and didn't make much sense. She is hard to take notes from because the presentation of the material isn't completely focused and organized. Overall she is a fair grader on exams (2 exams--100 pts each, 50 point essay and 50 point short answer & identification. each tests last about 2 hours--she gives you two days for the midterm and some people used nearly the full 3 hours for the final). She grades the exams on a curve if she sees fit--but she grades papers SO incredibly hard. Make sure you have her check her paper before you turn it in and make sure you go with enough time so that there isn't a long line at the office. Daily quizzes some weeks (at least 18 quizzes throughout the quarter--only 15 count). I would say she's a pretty good teacher but if you can try to get someone better; the lectures weren't enough to keep me focused, even with books I love.

Dr. Curiel is a really nice person and you can tell she really likes teaching. If you go to her office hours with your essay she is more than willing to tell you exactly what you need to do for a good grade. You have to do all the readings, because she gives daily quizzes, and the tests are pretty hard, but she isnt at all intimidating and made the lecture go by pretty quickly. I would recommend her.

Dr. Curiel is really nice. She was very helpful if you didn't understand some of the material. Reading is a must in this class. She gives quizes almost everday on the reading, but if you do the reading and do well on the quizes they really help boost your grade. The tests are sorta hard but she curves the midterm by a lot so that also helps. She is really helpful during her office hours and will pretty much tell you what to write in your paper to get a good grade. Overall she is really nice and fair teacher.

"Reading is a must in this class." OF COURSE IT IS. It's a literature class. You need to read books to understand literature. If you don't like it, there are DeVry classes in your hometown. "She is very boring and unless she licks you won't get a good grade. She grades very hard. If you are a conservative don't take this class because you will get very irritated with her liberal mind. It's her way or nothing. A very bad teacher." Your grade is dependent upon her licking something? What must she lick for you to get a good grade? Maybe you got a bad grade in English composition because you can't write in American Standard English. How can politics possibly come into play in a composition class? Maybe if you'd stop raising your hand to bicker with professors, you could learn the difference between opinions and arguments. You people are the reason my degree is worthless to employers.

Curiel is an amazing teacher. Her class has been one of my favorites at Cal Poly so far. You can tell she is passionate about her subject and her lectures are interesting. However, she is very difficult when it comes to grading exams/papers, so make sure you go to class and keep up with your readings. She has "pop" quizzes that she usually warns you about and they help a lot to buffer your grade.

I took this class credit, no credit so I didn't particularly care about it that much. One thing i must point out is that there is an insane amount of reading to do. One month books in high school are done in less than one week in this class(gatsby). two tests, two papers, and about 10-15 pop quizes on the readings(some get very specific). she cares about what she lectures, and after the first test, you realize that about 50 percent of the notes you will take in the beginning really don't matter.

Curiel is a very nice professor. The class is straightforward, reading quizzes are relatively easy, and the reading load is reasonable. It's a pretty basic class. The midterms are pretty easy and the final is not cumulative. The only issue is the amount she talks. There are days when you will be so bored you'll want to just slam your head into the desk. I'm serious, the woman can talk for days. She is really sweet and helpful in office hours. I would recommend her as a professor if you are decent at English on your own because it gets hard to pay attention in class.

If you are willing to challenge yourself and don't want to simply skate through a GE, then I would recommend this course. I highly enjoyed the readings that were given to us this quarter because they were enjoyable to read AND thought provoking. There are a lot of quizzes (10+), 2 tests that are not too difficult, 2 essays, and a group presentation on a short story. She is very passionate for the works presented in this class and if you actually pay attention to what she is saying, most of her insight will help you to understand the readings a bit more. Also, she is helpful during office hours (recommended) and considerate when it comes to outside problems conflicting with school. The only criticism I have is: having a PhD, she already has her set knowledge of the works and it seemed like she was not open to brand new ideas that were presented in the essays. A lot of the time, in her grading analysis, she was speaking for the author; assuming how the specific writer would rebuttle to your arguments. But all & all this class broadened my horizon of literature, stimulated the writing thought processes, and was beneficial to my college education.

If you take this class, make sure to have your essays reflect the ideas and motifs (she uses that word repeatedly and gets annoying quickly) that she presents when talking about the books/plays/poetry. You could probably figure out the meanings of the books and plays by yourself, but the poetry that she makes you read is brutal and sounds like its in a different language. She gives you random quizzes about very specific stuff from the reading from the night before. If you're not a very good at English you'll probably get a B or C, it is very hard to get an A in this class. She lectures most of the days but does group discussions sometimes, which are useless because everyone doesn't do the reading. I would recommend any other teacher than Curiel.

Professor Curiel's class is not impossible. Had I tried, I would have gotten an A. However, the woman is incredibly conceited and narrow-minded, so do not be surprised if her general bias towards people affects your grade like it did mine. She likes to think she's smarter than she actually is, and takes any new, innovative insight from a student as some sort of challenge to her "authority." She sucks the fun out of literature, as she has a tendency to reiterate the same basic nonsense over and over again. The students that do well in her class are the ones that pick up on her overt narcissism. They rephrase everything she says back to the class, providing no new analysis, yet she thanks them because that's exactly what she wants to hear. The classroom does not facilitate free thinking, nor does it make anyone comfortable to do so. All she cares about are her children; she can't stop from bragging about them during office hours. And... She's incredibly particular, especially with diction. Don't feel like you know any less because she writes "diction error" alongside everything. I've learned that she is merely being choosy about her words, as in she wouldn't choose the ones you've used. It does not mean you are using it incorrectly. I would also advise not doing your essays last minute because there's a good chance you'll fail. She loves ripping apart people's writing to show inconsistencies and the like. I'm assuming she gets a power trip from it. She claims she does this as a wake up call to not slack off in her class, which shows just how biased she can be. Automatically assuming everyone procrastinates, she robs students of the grades they might have rightfully deserved otherwise. For people like me, the ones that saw through her veil of supremacy, I caution you to lay low. Do what she asks if you want the grade, but don't expect anything else. I've experienced far better teachers and professors than her, with credentials to boot. The woman just loves to parrot information knowing most students are too uneducated to correct her otherwise. Do yourself a favor and take someone else. I recommend Mark Roberts.

She's a very picky teacher, but no one goes to college without expecting a challenge. There is a lot of reading involved and quizzes to ensure that you read the material, but it's not too bad. However, it's a good idea to take advantage of her office hours when preparing for the essays. She looks highly upon people who ask for help and she is very thorough and clear in her explanations when talking one-on-one.

Curiel was a savior! She taught a specially created class for graduating seniors when all other classes were filled. The class was awesome because she did not give homework or quizzes, just reading, two papers, and two exams. For those needing to satisfy the GWR she really accomodated those people by giving two practice tests, and then one real exam in addition to the two exams that the rest of the class takes. So, she actually gave three chances to pass the GWR. The books we read in this class were great, and the discussions in class were very interesting. It was like a book club--almost. I loved the class and I thought Curiel was a very good professor.

Despite what all the Polyratings say, I have really enjoyed Curiel's class. I have Curiel for two english courses this quarter, and I have found that she is extremely knowledgable and provides interesting insight into all of the novels that are assigned. Her lectures are interesting if you like literature. It is a lot of reading, but definitely worth it. Actually do the reading and listen in class, and you will do well. You may even learn a thing or two.

This is the second time I have taken Curiel and am taking another class with her next quarter. She is GREAT! You spend a lot of time in class in small group discussions and she really wants you to understand the work. Honestly, I have had her for 252 and 350 and I have never bought a book for either class, SparkNotes gets you through. As for her essays, she expects you to have learned something in ENGL 134 and 145, but if you bring in a rough draft she is happy to go over it and then you just have to make corrections. TAKE HER CLASS!!! If you're not a lazy bum about it its easy to get at least B in this class!!

Curiel is a very difficult professor, and she expects a lot from her students, especially in their writing. If you talk to her though, she will tell you exactly how you can improve your writing. I got a D on the midterm and wound up working extremely hard and getting an A in the class. Overall, with Curiel, the amount of time you spend working for this class will directly correlate to the grade you earn.

Prof cried today.... What a weirdo hahahah get a grip of your life.
