Dr Walkup is the best teacher to have for any physics lecture!!!!! He hold review sessions beofre every test, where he will basically give you the problems on the test. He grades based on your knowledge of the material, not how much work you do or don't do. I would take him again for any class any time!!!!

my problem with this class was that there was just so much info to learn...walker is a great teacher kind of nerdy but in a funny way, nott TOO boring for a stat class, really knows his stuff and is very well-prepared for class. he ended up curving the final grades because they were a bit lower than he liked, which was cool. he is available for office hours almost every single day, which helped me out a lot. as long as you are trying and he sees you try, and you participate enough in class for him to remember your name, you can get a B. but if you aren't down with putting a lot of effort into this class, think twice.

Walker is fantastic. Gives clear instruction in class, and is extremely helpful in office hours. It definitely helps to have a background in stats beforehand (STAT 130, a high school course, etc.), but out of all three stats instructors I have had, Walker was definitely the best.

Overall, Walker is a pretty good teacher. His lectures can be boring, but I never fell asleep once, so I guess that counts for something. He is very, very, VERY thorough with his explanations and his examples, so it is very easy to understand a LOT of the material. One piece of advice, form a homework group that you can complete the weekly HW with, it will save you so much time. That being said, make sure to study all of the material very well, because you may miss things if you don't do all of the homework yourself. Be sure to study well for the midterms and cumulative final and take advantage of the notes sheets he lets you use on the exams.

Okay, sure he taught it well. And sure the class wasn't too hard. But this guy is SOOOO boring. He also doesn't seem to care about knowing students or fostering a sense of community to make a more comfortable learning environment. Also sometimes when people asked questions, he was a huge jerk about it for no reason. He also wasn't the best at answering questions in general. He was also super anal and mean about other random stuff that isnt a big deal, like stapling homework together. There's no reason to get so extremely heated about people not stapling papers together. If he cares that much he should bring a stapler or make it a required part of the grading process, jeez. Anyways, If you have the option between this guy and someone else for STAT 217, choose someone else. But he's not so awful that you should give up on taking it if he's the only one availible

I really liked Walker, and I'd recommend taking him if you struggle with math. I took this class very seriously- sat at the front every day and took advantage of campus resources in weekly statistics tutoring. In addition, Walker is very thorough in his teaching and will take the time to address any confusions in depth. It's a fast-paced class, but it's extremely well organized. The homework partner concept was very helpful- it was its own form of self-check tutoring in itself. It isn't Walker's fault the material is boring- IT'S STATS! He makes it as good as it will likely get. You have to put into it what you'd like to get out of it. This is the best I've done in a college math class BY FAR- and Walker was extremely encouraging.

Walker is an AMAZING professor. He explains things very thoroughly and provides notes to follow along with during class. He's so patient and always willing to re-explain things if someone doesn't get it. He lets you do the homework in groups and create note sheets for the tests, so as long as you're putting in some effort there's really no way to get a bad grade in this class.

Walker is a good teacher. I would say that the way he teaches the class, the only way to get a bad grade would be to not do the homework and not try. He is a nerd (so am I though, so thats not a complaint) but he is very enthusiastic about what he teaches, which is great.

Mr. Walker is the best math teacher I have ever had. He goes over all the stuff and makes sure that everyone understands it. His practice problems we do in class are the same kind of problems you see on the test, so you don't have to worry about random stuff showing up. Only thing is make sure you try on your homework b/c he will grade it based on if it is right or wrong, but it is only 10% of your grade. I got an A because I did the homework and didn't fall behind, and felt the tests were relatively easy, if you paid attention.

The class is set up with three midterms and a final. The midterms can be challenging so study hard. The final was pretty difficult also. If you study and do the practice problems you will be ok. He gives out practice problems on the net before each test, so this makes it easier to study for the test. He also has home work problems and answers to them on the website also, this is helpful to students. In class there are lots of notes, and he explains the material pretty well. He will help you in office hours if you have any questions, he will answer them. The class was pretty hard for me, stats seems like a different kind of math and it takes a while to get used to. The only thing that I didn't like about this class was that Walker sometimes waits too long for an answer to a question in class, and this draws away from the material. Also, his lectures can be a little boring, but hey, it's math. Overall, it was a pretty good class.

Professor Walker has to be the most solid statistics professor at Cal Poly. Granted, I have never taken another statistics professor, he was the ideal one for me. His class is fair, straight forward, and enabled me to do well in the class (grade is still pending, expect an A). His tests are very fair. Most of the material comes from the practice exams, his slide examples, and homework. It is important to pay attention to those 3 things before taking the exams and there is no reason you should get less than a B. His homework is harsh because it is graded on correctness, but it is not too hard to get an A on it. His final exam was a relief. It is worth one third of your grade and cumulative, but very very doable. I finished the two hour exam in one hour because it was so easy. If you are a responsible student who does the homework, studies a decent amount for each exam there is no reason you should get less than a B. He is by far the most fair teacher I have ever taken.

Walker is the man as far as statistics is concerned. He has 3 Midterms that are not that hard and gives you homework problems that are just like the test questions. He is really cool in office hours and spoon feeds you the material just like you were used to in high school. The key to this class though is going to class, He passes out note sheets and teaches straight from them!! Simple enough right? He final was hard but he curves your final grade. Case and point, take Walker.

Alright, so yeah this guy is pretty good at conveying the material and his tests aren't all that hard. His homework is a bitch. Due every tuesday and thursday, and he is a dick grader on the homework. You can't go over it in class before you turn it in, so if you have a question (which you will on every homework) then you have to go into his office hours twice a week. THis guy is hardcore. For example, he makes you sign an official agreement on the front of each test in which you agree to take an F in the class if you are caught cheating. Big plus on the tests though, one sheet of notes, and on the final, 4 sheets of notes. I would like to have found a teacher with a little more personality and that made the class interesting. Walker just gives you statistics for an hour a day, and thats pretttttty damn boring.

Walker is pretty boring, but he is an excellent teacher. He teaches the material clearly and slowly and gives you notes about the subject. The homework is a pain since it's due twice every week but it really helped me prepare for the tests. Walker's lectures went perfectly smooth. He never tried to cram everything into one lecture. He never throws anything on his tests that you haven't seen before. There is a lot to be said about Walker, Texas Ranger. His southern drawl could lure ever the most studious pupil into a coma. His class is in no way exciting or fresh but he does present course material in a way that anyone could understand (assuming you're still awake). He has a passion for stats and had a lot of helpful office hours. He gives 3 midterms and a final which aren't hard except he is the pickiest grader I have ever had in my life. He gives a "practice midterm" before each test which always lured me into a false sense of security because they were nothing like the test. Study the hw problems, the show up more on tests. Overall, Walker gets it done as a teacher and he is a pretty desent guy.

Mr. Walker is an excellent teacher. However, you have to put alot of effort in this class in order to get a good grade. The lectures can be somewhat boring and hard to pay attention to. If you do pay attention though, it will help alot. The tests are very hard, so study alot for them. Do the practice tests because they will help. Imagine those types of problems on the tests, but only much much harder. I advice to take the workshop with this class. I did not, but I had friends who did and they said it really helped out. Mr. Walker is a great teacher and knows what he is talking about. The course is overall a hard course though. One last thing, is that Mr. Walker grades the homework. This makes things somewhat difficult because if you dont understand a toppic, you cannot fully get help on your homework. He will lead you in the right direction sometimes, or more often give you a problem that is like the one you are having a difficult time with. Go to office hours though!! They helped me out a bunch!

Professor Walker did a great job in making statistics a very interesting subject. I was a little afraid that statistics would be boring, but Walker was able to make the class very interesting and pretty cool. The tests were the one thing about the class the were a little shaky. He could make one test relatively easy and then he could make one test very difficult. I aced one test, but then got a C+ on the next. Other than that, Walker did a great job. Every lecture was interesting and he honestly taught every lecture till the bell rang or sometimes a couple minutes after. Honestly, there was not one day that we got out early in the class, starting day one. There was a lot of information in the class, which was good, but we never had even just a couple days to rest. It starts day one and goes full speed until the very last day before the final. Walker did an overall great job with the class and I'm looking forward to the next part of the class.

Walker is everything a student could ask for in a teacher. He presents material in a such a way as to if you understand it in class, you barely have to study it afterward other than doing the homework (which there really isn't that much of). Also, the examples he shows in class are very similar to the kinds of problems you will see on all of the tests. The three midterms test your basic understanding of all the material and he never puts anything on there you haven't already seen and the final consists of basic problems similar to the midterms. He does move the class along since there is a lot to cover, but never did I feel it was rushed. He does a good job keeping everyones attention during class as well. If I ever have to take another stats class, I'm looking for him first. Take him if you can.

Yes, his homework staff grades very meticulously on the homework, but I would highly recommend taking STAT 251 with John Walker. He's very straightforward and informative. You can tell he enjoys what he does and never fails to ensure his students understand the content. I went to his office hours a few times and he was very helpful and stayed until all my questions were answered. His midterms were a bit challenging but nothing too intense. 3 midterms, 7 homeworks, he lets you drop 2 of your lowest scoring homework grades and places a slight curve at the end of the quarter. Definitely did me a solid this quarter!

He's very straightforward and organized. You can tell he really cares about his students and how well they do. He prepares powerpoint notes for you for every lesson so you can listen to his lectures without rushing to copy anything down. His example problems in his notes are also very helpful for preparing for the test. Even though the homework is graded pretty hard, you get to drop 2 of them. The tests are very doable, just do the practice test problems he gives you before each midterm and final and you will do well. He's also really helpful in office hours. Overall, I would highly recommend taking him.

Walker's class is no joke. I had never taken stats before, and this class was difficult for me. His lectures are pretty dry, and it becomes very difficult to stay awake. His tests are very difficult, even with a 8.5x11 cheat sheet he gives you. Its not a terribly difficult course, but I would recommend waiting for Olga's class. I passed with a C, but all of my friends didn't study as hard as I did and got D's and F's. Moral of the story: for the same effort you could take Olga and get an A, or Walker and get a C.

Professor Walker, in my opinion, is a great teacher. Maybe he's not the most exciting but he teaches well and clearly and is very helpful in his office hours. He prepares the notes on polylearn so all you have to do is follow along in class. There are 3 midterms, a final, 8 homeworks(you get to drop your 2 lowest scores) and also 10 participation points. If you study well, by looking over the homework, practice questions, and problems from the notes, it's easy to do well. The homeworks are for the most part painless and he gives you enough time for them where if you have any problems you can go and ask him questions in his office hours. I would recommend him for a straightforward class that's not too difficult.

Walker was a good teacher. I took stats in high school, but didn't pass the AP test. The class consisted of 3 tests, 1 cumulative final, and 7 homeworks. Every Thursday, a hw is due. Heres how the class works: 250 points that is made up of 3 50 point midterms, and a 100 point final, and 40 points of homework assignments due every thursday, and 10 points of participation. this breakdown would work better if he taught the material and cared about student success. He gave us the median for our test which was a 67, and we all knew the average was lower. he didnt curve the test, and didnt seem to care that students did poorly. I study for this class at least 15 hours a week and still struggle on midterms because even though I understand it conceptually, he is the hardest grader I've ever had. i would really avoid professor walker at all costs

Coming in from high school, Professor Walker's class was substantially more difficult than any math course I have taken previously. That being said, this class was the only one this quarter that I felt genuinely productive in, and I enjoyed my time in the class for the most part. Professor John Walker is so so terrible. Regardless of what other people say on here, he is so dry and it is so hard to follow what he is trying to teach. I really wish I took this class with any other stat professor, because there are tons. His class is so hard to understand. I loved stats in high school and got in A, but with professor walker, I am somehow failing. Also, the way he grades his homework is absolutely ridiculous. It is out of 8 points, and no one in the class gets higher than a 5- which you automatically get for doing all the problems. He is honestly just the worst. I really regret taking stats with this professor.

Professor Walker is a great teacher. Yes, he is hard and some people think he is boring, however he really knows his stuff. He lectures about the material we learn in class, and he does a few examples of each thing we learn which really helps. He has you print out the notes ahead of time and you just add your own notes to it which is really useful so you can focus more time on watching him teach instead of just staring at slides trying to copy everything down. People were disrespectful to him in class and would laugh at every little mistake he made which was just so disrespectful. Yes, he can be a bit boring sometimes, however he really knows his material and is a wonderful teacher. I strongly recommend this professor. One of the best math related teachers I've ever had. He gives you pre-made note sheets that present follow along material that is simple and easy to understand and are a strong reference to use while doing homework and studying. He goes slowly in class and provides plenty of examples. I never left class confused. The tests are pretty straight forward, they could be a little challenging, but they were always fair, and very doable. He allows you to have note sheet for every test and four for the final, which are extremely helpful. His homework graders are meticulous, it will be hard to get an A on homework if you don't get every problem completely correct, it helps to go to the free tutors and his office hours if you have a question. That being said, I always got somewhere from an 8-9.5/10 on the homeworks, and ended up with an A in the class. He also drops your two lowest scores. Great teacher, helpful in office hours as well, highly recommend.

Professor Walker is very knowledgable. His class consisted of weekly homework assignments, three midterms, and a final exam. He provides his lecture slideshow slides on PolyLearn that coincide with daily lectures. He is able to effectively relay the lessons and information to his students. However, though not often, his exams do have some curveballs. Out of all my classes during the quarter, Professor Walker's class was the most challenging class. Nonetheless, this was the class I enjoyed the most and learned the most from. He is also very supportive, and though he doesn't say it, it shows that he genuinely cares for his students and loves his job as an educator. i don't know where these good reviews are coming from, but here is an update from 2018. Walker has notes done for you, has you bring them to class, and lectures at you for the whole hour. Good luck trying to stay focused the entire time with his monotonous voice. He's a chill guy, but not a great teacher. An hour/50 minutes is hardly enough time to finish his exams. He doesn't curve either even when the average is quite low. My biggest complaint with this class is the grading. Walker never curves the mditerms even if the average is low. You also get a homework grade that's worth as much as a midterm and it is graded very harshly. Every week, his homework would take me sometimes hours to complete, and I would get marked down for the littlest things to get a homework grade of a 7.5 (that's ridiculous). Homework should be graded upon if you completed it, not harder than the test. His homework grade would lower student's grades. In class, he would almost look down upon you if you answered one of his questions wrong.... Overall, he makes his lectures simple, but boring. I often would have to reteach myself the material before every midterm or else I would've failed every one. Even if you do great on the midterms, an A isn't guaranteed do to his harsh homework grading. Avoid this professor

I took AP Stats my senior year in high school, and although I felt I comprehended the material very well, I didn't get a good enough grade on the AP test to get the credit for this class. I came into this class expecting similar material and that it would be easier for me, but Prof. Walker did not make it that way. He does a good job of making lectures simple, but it ends there. If you answer a question and get it wrong, he will publicly shame you and make you feel like an idiot. He grades homework harder than his tests which is absolutely absurd (he has a homework grader, and I would love to give him/her a piece of my mind). The class is incredibly boring and its the same thing every day. Going into office hours is a waste of time, he doesn't want to answer questions and acts like you're wasting his time. For my first quarter of Cal Poly and having no prior Stats experience, this class was a rude awakening for me and took me through hell and back. From the first day he expects you to know a lot and assigns hours of homework. The class is the same thing everyday, where he will lecture nonstop for 50 minutes and the time goes by slower than microwave time lol. The class is composed of 3 midterms and a final so there always seemed to be a midterm around every corner. Walker never reviewed material, he would only pile on more up until the days of the tests (which were insanely harder than the study guide questions). His homework once a week was brutal and confusing, often taking hours resulting in a 7/10 grade. I did not think I would pass but I did everything I could including tutoring, study sessions, and reading the textbook. To this day I don't know how I passed but I did. Best of luck, you'll need it.

Don't pay any attention to the other evaluations. Prof. Walker is a nice guy. All you have to do to get a good grade is print up the lecture notes. His notes are very easy to follow and are a great study tool. If you have minitab, you don't need to go to lab. The hardest part of the class are the quizes, the average is always around a 6 or 7 out of 10. The quizes are about 15% of your grade. Oh and don't take the class because other people said it's easy to cheat. He makes different test versions and makes it almost impossible. You don't even need to, statistics is easy if you just practice and review the lection notes.

Prof Walker was great. Of the teachers I've had so far at Poly, he is the most straightforward. You print out his power point slides for each week, and you barely have to take any of your own notes. I've gone to his office hours several times, and hes been really helpful. He gives weekly HW assignments (all are pretty simple) which account for a huge portion of your grade. I like his grading system b/c the midterms can't hurt you that bad, because you have the HW, quizzes that aren't too tough, and a project that is also pretty easy to boost your grade. My advice is take Walker, do all of the HW and always print the notes b4 class and youll do fine.

Dr. Walker is a very smart proffesor. His lectures are clear and his tests are very fair. He always emailed me back right away if I had questions on hw. The HW and quizzes count for a large part of your grade so dont slack off on them. You get to work in groups which is nice, but make sure you dont get screwed with a bad partner. The project at the end is easy. The final covers a lot of material that isnt on the midterms so be careful. Overall I would take Walker if you can. It is easy to get a good grade if you put in the time.

Dr. Walker is an excellent Statistics professor. He is very helpful, answers email questions promptly, and has a lot of office hours. He has 8 homework assignments and keeps the best 7 homeworks out of 8. There are quizzes every other week, which are an easy 10 points to earn. He keeps the best 4 scores out of 5 quizzes. The 2 tests are fair, but you must do all review questions and attend the study sessions to achieve a high score. The final is cumulative, but he arranges a review session as well. Dr. Walker posts sample exams on his web site to help decrease your studying time. I highly recommend this class and him as an instructor.

Take statistics with this professor. Do the work and practice problems he assigns, and even if you miss class you'll do well on the tests, they are VERY fair. I highly recommend him!

Professor Walker is AWESOME. He GIVES you the notes you need for the class, and is always willing to answer questions and help students during office hours. He's very approachable and makes Stats easy to understand. I highly recommend him.

Walker is a SICK teacher! He explains things really clearly and all his tests and quizzes are very fair. He's a bit of a poindexter, but I think you have to be to be a statistics teacher! I couldn't have asked to take this class with a more effective teacher!

This was a great class. He explains things very well and makes everything seem so simple. Go to class everyday! You'll be lost! He is super approachable in office hours and is really great at explaining things. The homework is somewhat lengthy, but fair, and the few mini-quizzes are easy if you just understand what is going on. He has more work than the other stat252 classes it seems, but he teaches so well it doesn't feel like too much. His tests were relatively easier for the courseload and he gives you plenty of note sheet space for tests too. Fair warning: you might be very screwed if you aren't up to date on Stat 251, but that's a general statement, not a Walker-thing. You jsut have to know hypothesis tests and stuff. Also, make sure to get in a homework/project group with SMART people who actually do work, it is not fun to do everything yourself!

This is the best stat 252 teacher to take, I've taken the class with two other teachers and they were terrible. He was the only one that could teach out of all of them. He presents the material very clearly and makes it easy to understand. His labs are very easy to understand and do in class the only thing that makes them challenging is answering the questions to turn in with the homework. He lets you work in homework groups which makes less work. He is very nice in his office hours and has review sessions for a couple hours before each test for any questions you might have. I would recomend him over any other stats teacher.

Stat 252 was a pretty tough class just because there is a ton of material. Walker does a good job explaining it, but he is so thorough that the class is boring as hell and it is 5 days a week.

Walker is a good professor, simply put. He explains the material very well; just be sure to go to class everyday otherwise you'll have no idea what's going on. There are something like 5 quizzes (all multiple choice and he drops the lowest..), 2 midterms, a final, a final project, hw, and labs. The homework is a bit lengthy at times, but it prepares you for the quizzes and midterms. The labs are cake, and have a few questions that you turn in with the homework. If you kept up all quarter, the statistics project at the end is easy as well. I'd recommend him if you're looking to actually learn something about statistics.

Walker presents material very clear from slides. Holds office hours before test (usually on Sundays) and obviously works hard to prepare for this class. I had some trouble with the process when working a problem because when it's explained from a slide you see all the material instead of step by step. He's a good guy, but careful missing any class! There is alot of info covered

Professor is a really good professor, hands down. He can be rather boring, but there really is no way to make the subject of statistics exciting. The first half of the class is really easy as long as you are up on your Stat 251 and/or high school stats course, then gets more challenging as the quarter progresses. Take Walker if you can, he is a great guy who is accessible for office hours and extremely nice (just a little bit boring though)

Pros: Low amount of points into grade [around 300 i believe, but this also makes the midterms and final crucial], powerpoint use makes subjects easy to follow Cons: Impossible quizes [at least in my opinion], sometimes his goofy habits can distract Overall: First, you must understand that Stat 252 is NOT an easy class, no matter who you take. That being said, I would recommend Walker. It was hard, I only got a B-, but I learned a great deal.

This class was one of the hardest classes I have taken at poly so far. Prof. Walker is very good at explaining things and he has very good knowledge about the subject. But the thing is that he is sooooo freakin boring (I would die if this class was more than 50 mins long). If you can just stick with it and pay attention at all times, he is a great professor and he also helps u in office hours whenever

This class was definitely difficult. His lectures are boring and confusing. He is a nice guy but doesn't explain things too well. He has weekly homework assignments that take a lot of time along with a lab due every week. He gives quizzes every other week which averaged about a 7/10, for the entire class. His midterms were difficult but not horrible. Would take but wouldn't recommend.

I absolutely loved this class. Mr. Walker is probably the best teacher I have had at Poly to this day. I took 252 a few quarters ago and have spent so much time recommending him to others! He is definitely the most patient prof I have ever had. Granted, I really enjoy statistics but it most definitely isn't a breeze for me. He has a bunch of office hours and is really personable and helpful in them. He makes a point to learn everyones name which says a lot (in my opinion). He gives quizzes every other week which I always did really well on. If you do the homework and go to class, you should be prepared. One of my biggest pros when it comes to Walker, is that he is a very fair tester/grader. There aren't usually big surprises on the test - he prepares you well. He also gives a lot of partial credit. I can't say enought good things about him! I'm getting a stat minor now thanks to him!

Walker is an overall pretty good professor. The 252 class had a lab and a lot more material to cover than 251. Notes were off of the internet, which went pretty quick and were sometimes hard to follow. I was dissapointed we couldn't take more notes off of the chalkboard and go slower, but that may not have been his fault. The class had 2 midterms that were hard, in addition to a challenging final. There is homework with a lab that is collected once a week. Start early on this each week, because it takes a lot of time. There is also computer work in this class which can be difficult to do at home, try to get it right in the lab. Overall the class was challenging, but manageable. I suggest not taking too many other hard classes in addition to this one.

This class requires a lot of work ie. Lab on fridays, load of homework due every week, and quizzes pretty often. Walker knows his stuff and is pretty good at explaining himself also. The exams are on material that he covered completely in class, so don't be worried about the small details. Good teacher for a stats class!

Walker is a really great teacher. If you attend class and do the homework, you'll get a good grade. I never did either and I got a C+. It's not a hard class if you pay attention. He's a really nice guy and he presents the material pretty clearly.

Walker moves extremely slow in class and lectures until the very last second of every class. He teaches the material in great detail and lets you do homework in groups making it much easier but he takes away every quarter of a point he can find even if it is insignificant. His tests are way to lengthy and in depth for the time alloted and some stuff is not clearly gone over in class but you do get a sheet of notes front and back which helps. Overall Walker is boring and moves so slow but is good if you have never had statistics before.

Do not take him. HOMEWORK WILL TAKE OVER YOUR LIFE. And he actually grades it. Problem by problem. WORST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE. Do not listen to good reviews. HE SUCKS. No curve, straight points. Quizzes every other week (multiple choice), homework every week. 2 midterms. 1 final. DEATH. He does not know how to say parallel, or picture. NOT CHARMING.

It really amazes me how many positive reviews there are for Walker. I have never written a review on here before but I really feel compelled in order to encourage no one else to take this class. I hear he wasn't too bad for 251, but his 252 class is HORRIBLE. For me it's not that it's boring, it's that he basically overloads us with so many worksheets and materials that you have NO IDEA what's important and what's not. It's impossible to understand what's going on because you get so caught up in the little things that you lose sight of the big picture. The average of our second midterm was a 67%!!! He says the class will have a 3-4 point curve at the end. I would be surprised if more than 4 or 5 people get A's. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Maybe he's OK for 251, but not 252.

Too boring. He could not make this class more boring. Also there are no free points, he grades hw very hard, quizes are probably the easiest but still not very easy and he is very nit picky on tests. I would not reccomend mostly because I have never seen material presented so boring in my life. I studied very hard to raise my C+ to B-. Watch out for 2nd midterm, very difficult. I would definitely avoid him at all costs, I saw decent poly ratings and picked him as did other people. He is not a great teacher, hopefully more people who had him this quarter wrote on polyratings.

Professor Walker is a character, however, he knows STATS and truly wants his students to succeed. I was on AP and the class was difficult b/c STATS was not my thing, I went to office hours and emailed him questions he was always helpful and gave me great advice for studying. I went into the final with a low D and with his advice and help I got a C in the class. That is professor dedication to their student success.

You know, when I first walked into his class and heard him speak it was so difficult to concentrate because of his accent. Don't worry you get used to it, and it shouldn't affect your understanding of the material. My main complaint with this class is the homework. I've always had a thing against graded homework, but he lets you work in groups and guarantees a 7/10 minimum grade on it if you at least try. Definitely try to start the homework early, but know that he may not teach all of the material until the day its due (super frustrating to spend hours trying to figure it out only for him to explain it right after you turn it in). The loophole is to look at the notes for the next couple days to see if it can help. But the main problem with the homework was we used JMP. In my 301 class we used R, so it was completely different and made half of what I learned before useless. He is nice enough to post how-to guides for JMP on the homework, but it still would take me hours sometimes to figure out how to do basic stuff and gahhhhhh. If you can, I recommend going to his office hours because he's helpful in showing you how to approach the homework and how to use JMP. And he's super fast at replying to emails. His grader was slow and it took awhile to get any grades back, but Walker posted the solutions to the homework online after you turned it in, so that was great for review. Most importantly, though it may not seem like it, he actually cares about you. I was sick and had to go to the ER in Week 8. I missed the last midterm, but he was very nice and let me take it over a week later when I was finally better (I did have to email him a doctor's note though so don't just skip class and expect the same treatment). Oh and he drops your lowest quiz or homework score, so that's cool

Walker is a strange bird, to say the least. I liked him though! He really knows his stuff, but that might be his downfall. While he manages to keep the information at a basic enough level, he has his moments where he starts explaining certain abstract concepts and everyone's eyes start to roll back in their heads. It's heady material, and he knows it inside and out. On the flip side, he is really organized, he promptly replies to emails, and is very professional about office hours, showing up, and being on time to class. He also published his own notes (at no cost to you, since they are in PDF form), so you get to save some cash. He's not an easy teacher, but Stats at this level isn't easy. You walk away learning a lot, although you might be a bit numb for a few weeks. When you progress onto other classes, you recall stuff pretty well, so I suppose in the end he was a pretty effective teacher. Definitely not the worst by any means, in fact probably one of the better stats teachers at Poly, and we all know how stats teachers can be a real hit-or-miss proposition.

I would avoid this class if you can! Or at least take a different professor. Walker grades super harshly, the homework takes a looong time (even though it's group homework), and he is not very helpful in office hours. His office is a mess and he acts like you being in office hours is an inconvenience for him. As soon as you finish asking a question, he asks if you're done and it feels like he's kicking you out. He also only answers questions vaguely and sometimes that can be quite misleading. I spent twice as long on this class each week than any other class and didn't feel rewarded for the amount I studied. His tests are HARD. Lots of people fail and he isn't remotely sympathetic.

I thought Dr. Walker was a great professor. He explained concepts clearly and was certainly willing to help students out with any problems they had. I definitely disagree with the post above me regarding Dr. Walker. I thought Dr. Walker was welcoming to students asking for help, and the homework was not short, but certainly reasonable. Overall, this class was not too difficult at all. I slacked off and should've gotten an A. I would recommend Dr. Walker.

Excellent. His lectures are methodical and easy to follow. Note sheets are provided and his exams are extremely fair (though not easy). No curveballs. We moved at a quick pace and covered a lot of material. Responds to emails almost immediately (and I sent him many, many questions for the final stats project right before it was all due) Especially excellent in office hours. I utilized Dr. Walker's Stats Advising through the STATS department to complete my thesis. He easily put 2 hours into my project and was passionate and invested. I received an A- in Dr. Walker's course.
