At first I thought Schultz was going to be a sarcastic asshole, but he's actually just funny. He truly is there to help his students. Just speak up!! He likes opinionated people. Everyday before class he asks "So what's going on in the world?" And hopefully you did research on the topics pre-chosen by the class to talk about, like politics, religion, war, product problems. Things like that. As long as you say a couple of things a day and speak with confidence, he'll like you. The midterm was super easy and the final is a ten point extra credit thing. Take him!!

Professor Schultz is a fair guy, as long as you follow his instructions he will grade you very fairly. People said he is this mean old guy thats biased towards females but I did fine in his class by just following his instructions and doing my best. There is no final in the class only a midterm which is worth 20% there is an informative, persuasive, storytelling, impromptu and group speech in the class. At first I thought these would be daunting tasks to complete but they were actually quite easy to give and I really saw a lot of progress in my speech grades. He allows you to use a barebones outline when you are giving your speech. Overall I felt he was a good teacher and his class made me a better public speaker.

Not a bad professor, no final, easy midterm, makes the nervousness behind speaking not as bad. but he is CLEARLY SEXIST. has an obvious tendency to give all the As to girls. Other people said it in their ratings, but i thought they were just mad about getting a B, but it is true. I got B+s on every speech. The class isnt too hard for anyone, but if you are a guy, do not expect an A.

This class was unrelenting, one thing after another. Be prepared to work for this class. He's a very fair grader and a nice guy. He makes it seem like he'll rip your speech to pieces, but he's actually a pretty nice grader. A few times I thought I deserved a B but got an A. He really appreciates preparedness. If you come to class with a speech you barely know, full of ums and uhs, don't expect a good grade. Speak up! Nice teacher, interesting class.

This class is fast paced, but very enjoyable with a good class. Like the person below said, be sure to be prepared for your speeches. If you can, always present on the first day available. Contrary to popular opinion, it is possible for guys to get A's in the class, since I did, but it took a lot of work. Cater your speeches to what he is looking for and apply his criticisms when preparing your speeches. Also, participate in class as often as possible. The extra credit final was very nice.

Prof. Schultz in an interesting man. He's a theatre enthusiast, and he is quite large, so his voice literally reverberates. Anyway, he is easy going, likes breakfast burritos, and grades pretty fairly. Getting an A in this class means being an incredible public speaker and knowing your speech like the back of your hand. It's a tough class to have at 8 in the morning, but he makes it bareable. He did come play his guitar for us once, that pretty cool. Dont ask stupid questions, he will tell you to look at your syllabus or figure it out. He's no nonsense, and expects a lot from you. Overall, he's a decent guy and he makes learning about public speaking sometimes entertaining.

Schultz is a huge stickler, and makes it clear from the start. That being said, the best way to get on his good side is to LISTEN to his instructions! He is known for making an example of people who don't listen to his concise instructions, or that ask questions he has already covered. Other than that, as long as you make an effort (bring articles on discussion days) and have your speech ready the first day of speeches, you will have no problem getting a good grade. Appealing to his interests (Sports, Obama(as a speaker, not a president), Theater) won't hurt either, as it will keep him interested in your topics. Overall, he is a wonderful instructor in being clear about what he expects from you, all you have to do is meet those expectations. Oh, and when he asks a question about something you were assigned to watch, HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY. He remembers those who are not prepared!

Schultz is an unrelenting teacher, he is biased, and sort of rude. He gives you soooo much work, which includes a 1500 page paper. I found most of the things he assigned to be ridiculous...and off point. He is the hardest grader I have ever experienced. I got a lower grade on my paper because apparently my grammar was incorrect (this isn't an English class!!!). And the way he grades our speeches makes everyone feel like they can never improve. Almost no one gets an A on the speeches. I mean, I did not expect myself to get an A..not the greatest speaker....but still there are people who deserved an A and got a lower grade. All in all, he knows his shit and I have learned at least the basics of communication. He is very understanding when it comes to sickness or student difficulties.

Jeffery Schultz, after repeating in our class multiple times that you love Poly Ratings and that you think it is the greatest tool on the internet I have decided I am going to write the truth about your class. It was the biggest waste of my time and money at Cal Poly. You are liberal, sexist, and a horrible teacher. You graded the essays like a fucking English professor and you have no respect for your male students. You are extremely RUDE and unprofessional. In the end, we don’t give two shits about Hearst Castle or your stupid plays; you’re a horrible professor so stop teaching.

Mr. Schultz has been one of my favorite professors at Cal Poly so far. He is very entertaining as a lecturer, since he is a public teacher i think thats pretty important after all. Also, he is supportive and encouraging as far as your speeches go. He will make you work hard though. I thought I would just have to write a few short speeches and I'd be golden, but you have to write a research paper for his class and go to the library to get ACTUAL legitimate sources for your works cited pages. I ended up appreciating that he made us do that. if you just put in the work necessary, you should have no problem in this class and I bet you'll enjoy it a lot too.

Professor Schultz is an excellent teacher! HIs class is designed to be ffast paced and that results in alot of work. Be prepared to try hard in this course, but if you try hard and want to improve then you will do great! Schultz wants to see that his students are bettering there public speaking skills and that is very present in his teaching style. He is readily available and willing to meet. I would highly recommend taking this professor. You will learn alot! The class is structured as: - a 1500 word paper - 1 midterm - Class Participation - 6 speeches: Introduction, Storytelling, Informative, Persuasive, Impromptu, and Group

Schultz is awesome. Honestly I don't know why people are complaining about basic grammar issues they had on their essays that he "graded too harshly".. seriously?! You guys are in college. Grammar is basic and you speak english. I love english so that might help too. I got an A on my essay and so did the majority of my class.. As long as you try hard and have a good stage presence you should have no problem. He loves when you participate in class and also when you are able to walk around and step out from the podium when you're speaking and get the audience involved as well. Overall, Schultz was awesome and was one of the best teachers I've had. Try and you will succeed..

Rude, sexist, and inconsiderate professor. Be prepared, dehumanize yourself, and just be a robot that agrees with what he's saying all day. Then you'll make it out alive. Do you want Jack Nicholson to teach you how to speak? If so, take this professor. If not, take this professor anyway. He's great. He has a beautifully reverberating voice and definitely knows his shit about public speaking in front of an audience, being an actor himself. His sense of humor is great and he LOVES politics and sports. On certain days, he'll spend half the course talking about current events, which gives you credit for participation if you join in. Throughout the course, there's 5-6 speeches, A 1500-word essay, a piss easy midterm, and no final. If you want to take a public speaking class that focuses on public speaking, take Schultz.

Schultz was a great professor. He kept me entertained and engaged throughout the entire quarter. We had four speeches (story, informative, persuasive, group), a midterm, and no final. We were allowed to choose any topic for our speeches, which allowed us to be interested in what we were talking about. There was only one 1500 word essay, which really isn't anything to complain about. The workload wasn't bad (and the general class consensus was that it was easy to get a B), but I did have to work for my grade. I felt as though I grew tremendously as a speaker in his class, and would definitely recommend him.

Excellent teacher! You get scared because he seems like he is going to be very hard but it turns out that he is easy! People rip on him for being a liberal. I am a conservative and he is totally not like that at all. If you listen to his sentences very carefully there is a lot of truth to what he says. Anyway easy midterm, easy paper, no final, as long as you follow his advice on public speaking, go as early as possible, and put some work into your speech, you'll be guaranteed an A.

Schultz was a decent professor, a bit preachy at times because he had a chip on his shoulder about how technology is ruining young minds and stuff like that, but it was bearable. There are about 5 speeches and one 6 page essay about advertisement, so nothing horrible, but you need to be good at public speaking to pass. There are student evaluations given right after a speech, but even if the class liked you, he could knock it pretty hard. Just practice a lot and it should be fine. The exam was super easy, just some fill in the blank problems and a few short answer. No homework, but you did have to bring in news stories from a source, easy enough to google though.

All my friends have just finished SCOM 101/102 and from hearing what they had to do and how difficult their classes were I feel I got lucky getting Schultz. 1. DO NOT BUY THE BOOKS, the syllabus says you need to read. Don't. I wasted 70 dollars on a book i read 1X and for no reason. El corall buys the book back for like 28 dollars. save your money. Just listen to what he says in class and you'll be fine 2. 6 speeches (introduction, story telling, informative,?, impromptu, final) all graded pretty fairly. lowest grade is always a C+. 3. He grades on improvement not on how good of a speaker you are. Although I hated giving speeches, I always felt comfortable enough to get through them without passing out or leaving the class with embarassment. 4. Schultz leaves a broad range for you to give speeches on so it makes it hard to start when procrastinating, but easy once you get started. Speeches were done on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, why skateboarding is not a crime, girls scouts... enough said. I loved this teacher and I recommend him if you want a stress free class.

Okay so this class is basically an easy B, NOT an easy A. I'm a straight A student out of HS and for the life of me, i could NOT get an A in this guy's class. No matter how hard I tried or how much time I spent on my speeches, I could never get anything higher than a B. He seemed to go more for the way you present yourself in your speeches (eye contact, posture, gestures, vocal projection) rather than content. The class was a pretty light work load - 3 speeches (informative, persuasive, storytelling) each 5 minutes or under and an additional impromptu speech as the midterm, a paper on advertising, and a group speech for the final on the topic of your choice. If you want an easy B, take this class but if you don't mind a little heavier workload that will get you an A, take someone else.

Schultz is a cool guy. The class is pretty easy to begin with. Initially he grades harsh on your first and/or second speeches. Make sure to incorporate any sort of humor into your speech; it is well appreciated and rewarded with higher grades. Schultz gaurantees you will improve in even the slightest manner by taking his course. This is true, however, I felt that I improved because I was less nervous after I got to know the people in the class better. I found that the textbook was a waste of money (and that sucks when you're poor). We really didn't need it at all. Oh yeah, there is no preset order to present your speech; someone has to volunteer to go next or else Schultz will lower your speech grade one letter if you haven't gone yet. There is one annoying thing though: this guy doesn't grade easier if you are one of the first to volunter. Schultz packs you with work in the first half of the quarter, but you'll love it when you have almost nothing to do in the second half (especially when finals week approaches).

Hate to stay for 2 long hours while the teacher blabs about nothing? Take SCOM 101 with Schultz. When he is done with his short to the point lectures, he lets you go. He doesn't waste your time. The only time we stayed for the whole class was when we had to listen to speeches. He is fair on grading the speeches. Everyone is nervous in the beginning, but he makes you feel very comfortable. You become very tight with your class. By the end of the quarter, it is fun and is very easy. The midterm was multiple choice and easy, the final was either short answer about stuff we had learned or group speech. We give a total of about 5 speeches. He played the guitar for us and sang a song randomly which was awesome! He is sooo talented. I loved him!

I highly recommend you take Schultz's class for the Speech GE. He understands that if the class wasn't required, nobody would even think about taking it. With this in mind, he tailored the curriculum so that those of us who arent very good at public speaking can still succeed in the class. There are 4 speeches, which he grades based on your inprovement, and you arent expected to be a professional, just prepare well and try your hardest. Theres a research paper due in like the middle of the quarter which accounts for 25% of your grade, which is an easy opportunity to make up ground on poor speech performance. Basically, Schultz makes a class that most people are dreading and makes it into a fun experience.

To keep away from his bad side, participate in class and don't talk when he is talking, if you do and you ignore him getting mad - basically, it sucks to be you. I feel better about giving speeches than before the class, and he is much better than any other prof teaching this course at this time. He allows the speeches to be on pretty much anything so long as it has to do with the type of speech you have to give. Don't give retarded speeches, a guy in my class gave his informative/instruction on "Ghost Ridin' the Whip"...although I thought it was hilarious, it was a bad choice on his part. I would definitely recommend Schultz for SCOM 101. He works around students schedules and grades fairly. He is able to recognize students difficulites with speaking and improve thier grade greatly as the quarter continues. He gets the material across quickly and gives you class time to work on assignements. The midterms cover exactly what he tells you to study and there is no need to stress out over them because they are not worth much of your class grade or very difficult. The thing I appreciated most about Mr. Schultz's approach was his "real world" orientation, in keeping with Cal Poly's "learn by doing" philosophy. I put this class off as long as I possibly could because I didn't want to have to give speeches in front of people. Several of my friends recommended Mr. Schultz, and I'm glad I took their advice. We discussed and wrote on world events as well as researching, writing and presenting several different types of speeches in a supportive environment. I'm now working in architecture, and his class was a good communication preparation and send-off. Add me to the list of people who recommend Mr. Schultz.

Schultz kept this class interesting by starting off each lecture with an open discussion on current events. A good teacher. Unfortunately, its hard to get an A. If you want an easy A, consider another teacher such as Shea. Other than that, I feel I took a lot away from this class. Schultz was right about how your speech apprehension will be gone near the end of this class. I was nervous and just wanted to get this class over with. If a quiet, reserved individual like myself can get a B, you can too. If you are a great speaker, you might have a chance at an A or A- or B+--most of your grade comes from your speeches. For the final, we voted on either a written bluebook or a group speech. The extraordinary majority was a group speech. We had one written midterm which was very easy (and peer-graded), the rest was all speeches.

Professor Schultz is weird. My main advice for anyone would be don't buy the book. I did and I didn't read it once and I got an A on the midterm which is the only part of the class you need it for. I got straught B's on all my speeches whether I worked really hard on them or totally srewed them up. He showed the class the grade spread after each speech and the same was true for the majority of people in the class. Another big complaint is that he tries to discuss current events at the beginning of each class, and that usually turns into him spouting his crazy opinions. If you want an easy B and don't mind listening to his crazy opinions take him.

Schultz has kind of a weird grading system. A's are hard to come by, but so is anything lower than a C+. I got an A because I worked my butt off preparing for the speeches. I think the requirements are somewhat easier than other speech classes though. We had four speeches, Storytelling (2-3 minutes), Informative (4-5 min), Persuasive (4-5 min), and Impromptu (3 min). I heard that some professors ask for up to 7-8 minutes. He lets you have an outline up there with you to jog your memory, so my advice is to pretty much memorize your speeches and just use your outline as a reminder. He says not to memorize, but I did it anyway and he never noticed, just gave me compliments for not needing to look at the outline very much. Don't stand right behind the podium, he likes it better if you're off to the side a little. Make eye contact all around the room. He'll like you more if you speak up about current events during the beginning of class. It wasn't my favorite class, (some people's speeches can be a bit painful to watch) but on days when you're not giving speeches he almost always lets you out early. The midterm was the biggest joke ever. It was true/false and matching, and reminded me of middle school. It wasn't even on a scantron, you graded it right there in class, and it was ridiculously easy. For our final we got to vote either on group speeches or a bluebook test on the same material as the midterm. I wanted the bluebook, because it would have taken a lot less preparation time, but the majority voted for the speeches, which I guess wasn't that bad.

this was a super easy speech class. The book was not worth buying, and his lectures on the technical stuff were a little breif, so the midterm was completely out of place and felt like it didnt belong. He is obviously a good speaker and wants to make his students into good speakers. He doesnt expect too much out of you but still challenges you. He started every class with a group discussion which was cool because it meant an hour of talking about the president rather than working. This is the perfect class if you just want to fulfill your A2 and learn how to talk in front of a group. He also really wants everyone to be friends so if you are new to Poly take this class and you will make friends.

professor shultz is really cool, a lot of people don't like him but the class wasn't that bad. i thought for sure that i was gonna get a B, but he gave me an A in the end. the best part is that he doesn't grade on if you give the perfect speech; instead, he grades you on whether or not you improve. he'll make comments on your speech and if you fix those things you're going to do fine. also you have to grade everyone else's speeches using this form thing. overall its a good class. i learned how to give a speech and feel much more confident about speaking in front of large groups.

Schultz's class was an ok class. It was difficult at times because he usually gives only one week or so to prepare speeches. The speeches are graded pretty tough. If you work on them and research, you will pass, but he doesn't give out very many A's. Usually the only way to learn more about the material is to read the book. There is a lot of reading assigned out of the book. This is ok though, because most of the reading is common knowledge. You do take notes in class, but not very often, maybe once every 3 or 4 classtimes. The other times you listen or give speeches. Definitely practice your speech out loud before you present it to the class, otherwise, you won't do nearly as well and you will probably have trouble. Overall, the class was a good class, fairly entertaining, and not too difficult.

Pros: Only 3 prepared speeches [Storytelling, informative, persuasive] +1 more if you vote to have a group speech for the final. Awesome teacher who takes interest in students lives and the world around them. Get out of class early on non-speech giving days. Cons: "A" grade level set to a 92% [however, he uses the 92% point level when he gives you individual grades, so it doesnt really do anything.] Also, he tends to get upset if no one volunteers, so just go first and get it outta the way. Overall: Highly recommended. Dreaded the class and I pulled an A- without a ton of strain.

This guy is an awesome teacher. He's interesting, and makes the class fly by. He always presents the material in an interesting way, and is very friendly to the students. He grades tough on the speeches, and easy on the essays. The textbook is damn near useless, so you may want to just save money and not buy it, or try and get him to put a copy on reserve in the library. It's not easy to get an A in his class, but if you don't care too much about that, I definitely reccomend him.

Professor Schultz is a relatively good teacher. He is very good at keeping you awake in class. He grades pretty easily. The only drawback is, if you are a guy, you will not get an A. Schultz is somewhat unfair in his grading. Some girls would present horrible speeches and manage to get As and Bs. Fortunately he is not a hard grader. Even as a guy it is pretty easy to get a B. His tests are very easy. He makes it seem like they are really hard, then when you take it you find it extremely simple. I never even studied and got Bs or As. I recommend this teacher for a class like public speaking which nobody wants to take.

I enjoyed the class a lot...personally. There were times when I thought that Schultz was making our projects either impossible or hard, but the instant you got your grade back, it always seemed to work itself out! His midterm was easy and the speeches weren't very tough either (as long as you fulfill the requirements). He also makes you write a paper that he gives you a whole month to prepare for...also a very easy assignment just as long as you do the work. Oh, and a heads up to all the potential conservative students wanting to take this class...Schultz is a big time liberal...and he does have a liberal bias when political subjects pop up...so definetely watch out (I personally enjoyed that aspect of the class)

Schultz is a good teacher. He's pretty laid back, there is no homework aside from the four speeches you make, one research paper (which he gives you a month to do) and the final group speech. It's really easy to get a B in this class, it's tough to get an A, even tougher to get a C. Remember, this is a speech class, Schultz is more focused on the way you deliver your speech than the content of it. Sure, the quality of the content does impact your grade a bit (especially on the impromptu), but be more focused on knowing how you are going to deliver your speech. Pace, articulation, etc. Every class, to get people involved, he asks "What's Going on in the World?" This is a key to basically use 30 minutes of the class to talk about current events. Like the previous person said, Schultz has a liberal bias on political issues. He also enjoys pointing out how bad of a public speaker President Bush is. He practically worships Clinton's speaking, but doesn't acknowledge Reagan at all.

Alright, well lets start it off by saying, he is a really nice guy and is class isn't too much work. But, now that the good part is over, let's get to the negatives. First off, he has a really screwed up way of grading speeches. Throughout the quarter, the overall grades on speeches increase in the class as a whole, but he singles out certain people and grades them harder than others in the class, and it is easily evident. People would give monotone speeches with no gestures etc., and they would get A- and all that. Whereas people would memorize their entire speech with great emotion and movements, and they would get a B. And it was never clear why exactly he graded certain people higher than others. Now, this class is nearly impossible to get lower than a B overall, so if you are looking for that, this is the class to take.

This was one of the funnest classes Ive ever taken. You get to know everybody in the class really well and its just interesting to litsen to other people's speeches. As far as Professor Schultz, I thought he was a great techer. I got a B-, but I felt that I improved my speaking skills a lot. The only bad thing about him is that when he gets mad its seriously scary, but if you stay on his good side everything is fine. He grades your speeches not on how good they are, but on how much you improve which I thought was fair.

This professor is very excited about his subject. Everyday before class starts we talk about what is happening in the world. He wants his students to be informed with the world 7 the news all over. Doesn't give extra credit, going class is a must, not a whole lot of notes, the final was easy, the written is directly from the book and he gives you a study guide as well. Every week you have a speech to present which is the topic of your choice. Must have all your own pro's and material for presentations. Schultz's class was enjoyable, fairly-graded, and a great learning experience in communication. Schultz's class usually begins with a discussion of current events followed by a very brief lesson on public speaking or speeches by students from the class. The textbook that he uses is excellent, easy to follow, and really helped me in my speeches. Schultz doesn't teach out of the textbook very often, so you will have to take most of the reading upon yourself, but it is very helpful. Good luck:)

Schultz is nice but he also expects a lot from you. He recognizes that for a lot of us it is our first time taking speech but he also expects us to learn from every speech we give. We record our speeches so i recomend looking at the tapes and making sure you can improve a little every time you have a new speech. If you are unsure of how to improve go to his office hours and talk to him he is very nice and helpful! homework just the speeches! make sure you go to class everyday he is very picky on attendance! and also make sure you participate a lott he likes it when you talk in class. tests only the midterm which is hard. The questions werereally general make sure you listen when he lectures and take notes. if you want a really good grade on the midterm read the book but if you just want to pass it you can get by just by reading the summery. He is fair and a good passionate teacher. So this is not an easy A class but if you give it the effort it requires you can get an A.

This guy is too much into politics, that's all he wanted to talk about, and since we're required to participate, it was just stupid since I don't care at all for politics, nor did I have time to keep on top of what's going on in the world because frankly I don't care. Aside from that, he's a good choice for speech. He understands that speech is intimidating, and most people hat it. He will grade your speeches on improvement, so if you are terrible to begin with (like I still am), then as long as you show courage, improvement, and are hard working, he'll give you good grades in the class. I could've gotten a B, but I did bad on the midterms and essay. The midterms I found to be a complete joke. The book he requires you to read is also lame. About 90% of the book clear common sense, yet he tests you mostly on the other 10%, asking for exact phrases out of the book. The essay was also bad, we're supposed to comment on 3 advertisements, yet he didn't even grade them (he had some other tourist guide do it), and I got a bad grade on it because of organization, and apparently I was informal, no where did it say to be formal in the assignment. He's not bad, but I don't like how so much of the grade has nothing to do with speech. A speech class should grade your speeches, I got a B- average on my speeches, but because of a stupid midterm and essay I missed that grade.

Prof. Schultz is an ok teacher. He grades kind of harshly if you're not good at public speaking. He also docks off points for nervous tendencies and doesn't let you note cards, so you basically have to memorize our speech ( even though he says he doesn't want it to sound memorized). He does let you have an outline, but he calls it a 'bare bones' outline which means you can have at most about 3 words per bullet point or he takes points off. He does grade based on improvement, although I never saw that. Out of 3 of the speeches he didn't give any A's, 3 A-, mostly B to C+ range. He does give D's for speeches which were (in my opinion) semi-well prepared. There's one midterm which is all from the book. Make sure you read the book or you're screwed. I read the whole book and still got a B-. There is one 5-page research paper about advertising which is ridiculous. I wrote an advertising paper for an english class in a previous quarter and got an A- and used most of the same paper for his b/c it was about the same topic and he gave me a C (75%). The final is 5 points extra credit which is really nice. Overall, he's an ok professor for a class that you have to take, but I would try to find someone else.

Professor Schultz was a good COMS teacher. Take notes and listen to what he has to say in class, as the midterm heavily reflects what he has to say. Also, the first speech sets the bar for the rest of your quarter. I got a B- on my first speech and ended up with an A in the class because he grades on improvement. If you deliver your information clearly and assertively, you will have no problem in the class. Plus, you become good friends with everyone in your COMS class. Comparing the workload to those of other teacher's I've heard about, Schultz gives out the most work: four speeches ( one of the impromptu), one 5-page essay, a couple smaller essays, a midterm, and a group speech which is basically your final. They're shorter than speeches other prof's will give, though. He seems like an alright guy at first, but yeh, he is kind of rude and straightforward in the way he talks. Ok, his high ratings deceived me at first, as I was expecting a laid back class. His class was VERY stressful to me, basically because he's INTIMIDATING. But he grows on you in the end. You can tell he cares about his students and the material he teaches, so just act like you care and he will like you. I did horrible on all my speeches and I ended up getting an A somehow. My one bone to pick with him is the way he pushes his politics onto others. I'm not an Obama fan but I acted like I was just to get on his good side, because he would try and argue with you if you were on the opposite side of his political fence. Every day he wanted you to share some news about current events. What I did? "Obama is good, Republicans are bad." And I'd get my participation points for the day, even though I absolutely don't feel Obama is good. Worked for me.

He\'s an asshole who has his favorites. he had this one mood swing where he started yelling at this one student about being disrespectful when he had his head phones hanging from his shirt. The student was not even listening to music and Schultz went off on a huge tangent on being respectful when he clearly does not respect the students. I personally was given a D- on a speech because I did not memorize a huge list of statistics and had to use my working outline which had the statistics on it. This guy is old, grumpy and old-fashioned in his teaching style. Most COMS classes I\'ve heard of give out several small writing assignments but he gives one huge paper. I\'ll admit I wasn\'t a great speaker but he was downright mean in the evaluations he gave me. He would actually interrupt speeches to make rude comments. Pretty much anything you can do to make your students feel like shit, he did it. Most of our class time was taken up by talking about politics and such, which I don\'t think is relevant to giving speeches, just a waste of time while he tries to get you to share his opinions. As long as you read the book and take notes you should be okay. I suck really bad at presentations but still managed a B. This is because he grades on individual improvement over the quarter not how you did relative to the rest of the class. Midterm is easy if you study a lot, and you need to put effort into your research paper if you want to do well. Since the four speeches, midterm and paper are pretty much your grade make sure they count. He gives stuff to you straight so if you\'re expecting preferential treatment for any reason forget it. Fair and honest, I recommend coming to class prepared for the daily discussions it makes class more fun and interesting.

SChultz seems really intimidating, but in all honesty, he\'s not scary. He is super liberal though, so if you\'re even remotely conservative, keep that to yourself during the daily discussions. Oh and about those discussions...do them. Partcipation (aka the discussions) is 10% of your grade, and it moved me from a B+ to an A-. The midterm is easy as long as you take notes in class and read the book. There is no final, at least for our class it was an extra credit paragraph. The speeches are annoying, but do exactly as he says, and you should be fine. There are 4 speeches: story-telling speech, informative, persuassive, and a group speech. The persuassive speech and the group speech are worth more than the informative and story speeches. He doesn\'t let you have notecards during the speeches, but he lets you have what he calls \"a bare bones outline.\" When he says bare bones, he means minimal writing - try to keep it to a sentence per point, maybe less or he will grade you down. The paper he assigns is really easy and straight forward, just give him exactly what the sheet asks for and if you\'re confused on what he wants, ask him direct questions about it and you\'ll be fine. OH and make sure to quote sources during your speeches, particularly the informative, persuassive, and group speeches. Also quote sources in your essay, he tends to grade higher if you make yourself sound credible with sources.

FIrst off, Professor Schultz likes to pretend that he\'s intimidating but he\'s really very approachable. Public Speaking itself if not easy nor is it fun; however, I enjoyed this class. There are usually 4 speeches in the quarter and a midterm. The midterm is HARD, which is why it is important to actually read the book. It\'s completely redundant and common sense, but the exam asks a lot of tricky questions about speaking models, etc. which are all in the book. Not just because it was high school, but becuase i knew my stuff, practiced, and delivered it effectively. Schultz will never give you the grade you deserve no matter how much effort you put into it. Everyone has different abilities but he does not recognize that. He himself is a pretty bad public speaker; coughs all the time and has a terrible appearence. I recieved a B but deserved an A. Almost all A\'s are given to girls, so boys, he is very sexist. Unless you are in drama and can perform in front of the class, dont think you are getting an A. Only part that was somewhat annoying is that he grades on improvement. I got an A on the first speech (storytelling) which was worth less points. i then had to match that the rest of the way in order to get a B on the remaining 100 point speeches, while others could receive a B+/A- just for improving on a lousy performance. Very on sided liberal. Don't get on his bad side, gets aggrivated very easily. Besides that class is relatively easy, make sure you do well on the essay because it will kill your grade like it did to mine. No reason you shouldn't get a B, speeches are all 4-5 minutes or less. I would reccomend for sure.

Professor Schultz is a very nice guy. He is fair in his grading, and always offers feedback to help you become a better speech giver. This class is not impossible to get an A in. The essay and the midterm will greatly influence your grade. I got a B- on the first speech and between A's and A-'s on the others. I got B+'s on both the midterm and the paper. The final is extra credit (5 points) but it can help boost your grade. It boosted me from a B+ to an A-. Overall, I would recommend taking this class over a lot of the others I've heard about. It requires work, but the speeches are all pretty fun, especially the impromptu!

He may act like he knows a lot about communications and speeches, but really he doesn't. He is always talking about theater which is annoying. Go teach a drama class if you want to talk about play and such. Also, he is almost ALWAYS 10 mins late for class, the first whole hour is a complete waste of my time because we "go over" the current news. If I wanted to know what was going on in the world I would read a newspaper or turn on ABC and watch the freakin news! He refuses to give me any grade higher than an 89% on a speech which is ridiculous. I have been involved in professional speech competitions throughout the state and have never scored that low. Even watching the recordings of myself I see very little wrong with my presentations. He has one way of doing things, which is WRONG. There are multiple ways to present a speech and provide visual aids. He is constantly interrupting EVERYONE ALL THE TIME!! If you bring up a topic he feels isn't relevant or important he'll cut you off and shut you down. This was by far the WORST class I have ever taken and he is one of the rudest and worst professors I have ever had!! He is a rude person and his political views are CLEARLY democratic, so if you're a republican don't take his class. He is super sexist, if you're a boy sucks to be you. Girls, if you're not a super model you're out of luck. Also, he is just a jerk. I'm not sure if I can say I learned anything I didn't already know. How his polyratings is so high is beyond me, he is awful!! Also, DONT waste your money on the access code....I never even used it and still got a good grade.

I'm not exactly sure why the person below me is ranting and using all caps but don't let him scare you. You should have no problem being successful in this class if you attend each day, participate in class discussions, and take your speeches seriously. I am a terrible public speaker and absolutely hated going up front each time. If you are like me there are other ways to improve your grade. First, always participate in class discussions. Read the news for about 10-15 minutes before class each day and come prepared to talk about it. It's easy points and really interesting as well. Next, take the advertising essay seriously. Being a poor public speaker, I knew I would have to do well on the writing portion of the class and spent many long hours on the essay. This definitely payed off. Third, just come to class. It is really easy but some students don't seem to get it. 10 percent of your grade is on participation and attendance. It is not diffucult to show up for two hours twice a week. A couple things I enjoyed about the class: Professor Schultz understands it is extremely difficult to constantly listen to someone lecture for two hours each class period, regardless of who it is speaking, so he tends to either shorten the class periods or have the class interact and discuss the news to keep the students focused and interested. Also, Schultz is a great public speaker so you should have no problem staying awake, alert, and interested during his class, unless you have the 7 A.M. but that is just bad luck or bad scheduling on your part. Another part of Professor Schultz's class I enjoyed was when he brought in his 12 string guitar. I am a guitar player myself and found it rather fascinating. It was one of the highlights of the quarter for me. I also liked how he did not tie the class down when it came to choosing speeches. He leaves the class a very broad spectrum of ideas to talk about and you should have no problem finding a speech that interests you. Professor Schultz was a great COMS-101 teacher. He helped me become a better public speaker and gave me the reviews I needed on each speech to see my faults and improve on them. If you are a student who can come to class everyday, be prepared to participate, and take your speeches seriously, you shouldn't have any trouble being successful in this class. One more thing, he likes sports, that's always a plus.

I agree with what other people have said about him having biases. There were several people in my class who he clearly did not like. The trick, of corse, is to try to not make him dislike you. If you look like you care about the class and try to be exciting when presenting your speeches, you will do fine. If you really want to be safe, show up to his office hours to discuss speeches. He is not incredibly helpful, but at least he will think better of you. His lectures are fine but he does not directly address the content of the book, which the only midterm is on. Overall, he is an average teacher who is usually quite fair.

I loved having Professor Schultz as a teacher. He made the course really interesting and I ended up learning a lot about public speaking that I didn't already know. I liked how we had to do a handful of speeches throughout the quarter because it really helps you get comfortable with presenting in front of an audience. He provides helpful feedback at the end of each speech and he sends you a video recording of your speech, which really help when you're thinking about what you need to improve for your next speech. As long as you read the material, pay attention in class, and actually spend some time working on your speech, you'll be fine; the point of the class is to improve so you need to put in an effort.

basically, this guy is a jackass. he is a tour guide at hearst castle during the day and "teaches" SCOM at nite. note that i put "teaches" in quotation marks. basically he has people in class read bits and pieces from the book. in class, we give four speeches. it doesn't matter what content they have, so long as you make it theatrical. schultz likes pointing out that he is an actor and loves regaling tales of his hearst castle experience, none of which have anything to do with the class. he grades people on their speeches based on how much he likes them. one night when the SCOM department chair came in to observe him, he brought in a guitar and played two songs in a brutal attempt to impress him. as far as writing assignments go, theres a speech analyzation and commercial analyzation for which he'll grade you based on punctuation rather than content (i got a C, with the only explanation being a grammatical error). other assignments included an "interview on anything" and a "monologue on anything"... to be the smart ass punk that i am, i wrote my monologue on how much i hated him, his obvious favoritism, his grading habits, and his shitty teaching style, while still meeting the criteria for the monologue... he gave me a B- with the only explanation being that i had not double spaced. the two "midterms" if they can be called such a thing were basically 15 true/false questions (he takes statements directly from the book and either keeps them in their current form or negates them) and 15 matching... you need not even crack open the book to get an A. the final sucked though.. you needed to memorize some details from certain chapters. overall, if youre a theatrical and gregarious person, you might as well take this class for an easy A (also make sure to suck up).. but if youre a cynical bastard like me, dont expect an A from this hearst castle tour guide (i'm more qualified to teach the class than he is)

Schultz starts out telling you most people in his class get some sort of B. There's a lot fo work in the class, with three or four papers and four or five speeches, having something due pretty much every week. But, it's not really hard work, you just need to be prepared. There's a lot of reading that he assigns, which you'll need to do to get a good grade on the midterms, and the book is extremely dry. But he doesn't put "trick" questions on the tests either, he only tests over the relevant information. In general, Mr. Schultz is just a really cool guy, every class period you take time at the beginning to "exercise free speech" and just talk about what's going on in the world for 15 minutes or so. It's really a great class, better than the alternative sections, so i hear. It's enjoyable and Mr. Schultz is really committed to helping students become better speakers. Highly recommend taking this class.

Schultz is a great teacher. He starts off slow, he definately knows that speech is hard especially for the first time. His writing assignments make you think. It's not just an easy paper to write the hour before class. If you have a problem, you can always talk to him after class. He's very understanding. You never know what you're gonna get, he even sang and played the guitar for the class showing a way of persuasion. Good stuff!

Professor Schultz is the best! First of, I had his class from 4-6 at night, and we never got out later than 5! His midterms are so easy, basically common sense, don't even bother studying. The first 15 are true/false, and the next are matching, don't stress. We did four speeches: panel, inform, persuassive, impromtu. He grades pretty easy, nobody in the class got lower than a B- on any. Also, we had 3 writing assignments, about 600-700 words, graded easiliy as well, nothing lower than B-. The final is easy, look over the study guide, its all in essay form. He is a great teacher. Especially when he brings in his guitar and starts singing! Take him for a good, easy, fun class!

Schultz's class is a joke. Let me start with his grading of speeches...he uses an evaluation sheet that determines your grade. It's scaled from 1 to 8 (8 being the heighest possible grade)and it covers pace, eye contact, projection, diction, variety, gestures, content, and organization. This sounds reasonable enough, but it's really completely incompetent. I saw speeches that were god awful but still scored well on this scale, I also saw some awesome speaches that failed to meet one of the criteria, resulting in an undeserved poor grade. Schultz is unfair in his grading methods (basically, if he likes you you're in). I often questioned why I was working hard at all, because he obviously doesn't reward this kind of ardor. I was schocked to see the grades after the first speech, it was like some kind of sick ironic joke. All the speeches that were quality got the lowest grades! All the speaches where people stumbled through obviously unpracticed got the heighest grades. There were maybe 5 or students out of 30 who got the grades they deserved. The only A in the class went to the speech my peers and I UNANIMOUSLY agree was the worst (I think the guy made it up as he went)! I'm not just bitter, I didn't even do poorly, everyone I've talked to in my class is in consensus about this stuff. Schultz's lectures are also a joke...through out the term I thought 3 things as he babbled, "What the hell is this guy talking about?" "What the hell does this have to do with speech?" and finally, "Is it possible to die from boredom?" Basically, all Schultz does is reiterate bits and pieces of the book (which also has no relevancy to the course...it's more of a history book than anything, and the parts about speech are so common knowledge it's ridiculous, for example: the books explanation of anxiety: "The more the person cares about the outcome, the greater the anxiety." It also talks about useful things like "how to be an effective listener" and how to be a "critical thinker" lol... I literally learned nothing) Schultz grades papers just like speeches, if he likes you, you get a good grade, if not, you're screwed. On a good note, you do get out early pretty often and his tests are cake. All in all however, it boils down to this question, "Am I willing to be annoyed and frustrated beyond belief for a secure grade" (you won't get less than a B unless you really screw up.) Your choice, good luck.

SCOM 102 is a waste of time no matter what professor teaches it. As for Shultz, he is a friendly guy, who makes it as interesting as possible, but has some problems with a grading scale. The speeches I spent hours preparing he gave me a B on, and the speeches that I put together at the last second he gave me an A on. The same thing proved true for writing assignments as well. He requires you to read the entire speech book, which is more painful that sitting through the aweful speeches given by peers. If he assigns a paper based upon opinion, make sure you agree with him. He doesn't really teach speech habits, except what is in the book (which is a joke), instead he relize on you getting better through repetition. Its a general ed that you'll get a B in, unless you lucky.

I had heard nothing but bad things about taking speech and put it off until now when I decided to transfer and had to finish Area A in order to do so. Luckily I got Schultz who made the class enjoyable from 7-9pm MW. I didn't miss the class once because it wasn't a burden to go to it. You do have 5 speeches and 3 writing assignments but he lets you to make-ups and they are all reasonable. I would definetly recommend him to anyone who is apprehensive about speaking in public, he makes it so easy to get up there. Take Schultz!!

Other assignments that I turned in were horrible, but he still gave me good grades. All in all he is a pretty cool guy. Schultz is quite a character. For a speech class, I believe we had too much writing. Other than doing outlines for our prepared speeches, we also had to write three essays. That's more than I have to write for my Lit class! He is a very curious grader- the two speeches I felt I did the best on, I received a B. The three I felt I did horribly on, I got As. He takes roll every class, and participation is a significant amount of your grade. The only thing that truly bothered me about this guy is his narcissism. He use to be an actor and brought in a video of one of his monologues, which had no relation to the topic. He will also bring in his guitar and sing for the class. It was fun at first, but then I realized that he just really loves to hear himself. But if you can get over the narcissism, he is a decent guy.

The class was fun and I got to know the people in the class. Mr. Schultz's mid terms are very very simple...multiple guess, true/false, and take about 15 to 20 minutes. There are three 800 word papers that you need to write, and they aren't that hard. Most of your grade comes from how you do on the speeches. BUT, Mr. Schultz only writes a short paragraph on how you did and something you could improve on. I want to know HOW to improve, not what i need to improve on. I'm old...4th year of school and to be honest, all i want is an A in the stupid GE classes that I have left to take. I got a B+. For the speeches, he grades you on a scale of 1 to 8 on several things: pace, diction, projection, content, organization, eye contact, gestures. He grades pretty difficult on some of those things...never did i get an 8 on anything! and i thought i gave good speeches. The comments from your fellow classmates (written on a paper) are pretty much worthless. They just say "good job" or "funny" and dont really tell you what you need to do for next time. Oh, and your classmates grade you also, not just Mr S. If it werenn't for that, then I probably wouldn't gotten a C or B-, because Schultz grades hard on the speeches. I know I just couldn've asked him (because MR S is very nice and helpful and easy to approach), but he should tell his students how to gesture during a speech and how to improve. Overall, yes it was a super easy class, and I would recommend that you take mr. S, but there are probalby easier speech teachers...who i could've gotten an A from!

The most important aspect of a speech class is how comfortable all the students feel with each other and the professor. If the atmosphere in the class is not friendly and empathetic, then the quarter will be difficult and awkward for most everyone. Thankfully, Prof. Schultz does his best to encourage a positive atmosphere. He uses humor and kindness to break the ice in the beginning, and uses respect and camraderie to keep the vibe going. Every person in the class evaluates everyone elses' speeches. Prof. Schultz own evaluations of your performance are fair and informative. In fact, you have to try really hard (or not at all) to get a C on a speech. He also partly bases your speech grades on whether or not you improve throughout the quarter, so take constructive criticism to heart. There are very few writing assignments, but they are short (about 3 pages) and relatively easy. He cares more about your speaking. I encourage taking Prof. Schultz for SCOM-102.

Professor Schultz is an awesome professor. I was very fearful about going into a speech class and talking in front of other people. He made it very fun, and had a comfortable environment througout the quarter. I highly recommend Schultz as a speech professor. He has been one of the best professors I have had at Cal Poly. He is easy to approach and talk to, he also likes to get the class involved in speaking, eases the nerves of everyone the very frist day of class and makes public speaking fun. He also grades very fairly, he grades on your improvement throughout the class, because he doesn't expect everyone to be an outstanding speaker. If you have to take speech 101 or 102 take Professor Schultz if at all possible, you won't regret it at all.

Mr. Schultz made me feel very comfortable in the class. I really hate public speaking, but it was a lot easier for me to do my speeches because the environment is so friendly, thanks to him. I got a B+. I thought he was a pretty fair grader. The problem is, that it is difficult to measure improvement. What you thought of as an improvement, may not have been to him. Other than that, it is an excellent course. I recommend this teacher for your A2 requirement. He is really good. The tests are simple, there are 3 semi-easy papers, and 4 speeches.

There was NO strucutre, it was like "write a paper on _____ topic" that's it, no instructions whatsoever, most of the time no hand out to supplement it. a lot of people in my class were frustrated when they got papers back with a lower grade than expected because they didn't know what he wanted because THERE WERE NO INSTRUCTIONS!! The speeches that i rehearsed i did worse on that the ones i winged. Says a lot. He sang weird folk songs, i didn't really like that. You have to go to every class, his midterms are easy. Schultz is a very good teacher. He creates a very comfortable environment for giving speeches. I liked his system of having the class fill out sheets grading the other students speeches, becuase it helped keeping you from getting bored. And when you get your speech back, you get the opinion of 25 people instead of one. Schultz does grade the speeches a little hard, but that is made up for when he gives the easiest midterms ever. He also assigns three essays, which kind of sucks being as it is a speech class, but they are pretty easy. He is a very nice teacher and i definately reccommend him for your speech class

After hearing about the assignments other teachers give their SCOM 101 and 102 classes, I can definitely recommend Schultz. There are 5 speeches: storytelling, informative, persuasive, impromptu, and a final speech. They are fairly easy because there are no real guidelines on the content of your speech. I just talked about subjects I already knew a lot about and never did research for any of them. He assigns 3 writing assignments which are all pretty easy. I spent about an hour on each of them and got 2 As and a B+. His 2 midterms are extremely easy as long as you've skimmed the book. They consist of 10 true or false questions and 10 matching questions. My only complaint about him overall is that he doesn't really give As out for final grades. As far as I know, only one person from my class got an A.

Professor Schultz is absolutely awesome. His class has so far been my favorite, and I was actually sad when the quarter ended because of his class. He makes you feel comfortable even though you have to give a bunch of speeches. And he grades you on your overall improvement during the quarter... he never compares you to another student. I just had to respond to the previous dickhead who posted TWO flames 4 minutes apart in the middle of the night....obviously in the throes of cheap, illegal, mind rotting substances. Claimed to be an A student, but A`s in Schultz's class are hard to come by, and a ranting raver like this would never earn one. Schultz is concerned that students become better communicators, not great speakers, and if you are willing to work you can for sure get a B or B+. Everybody anonymously grades everyone else's speeches, and he gives specific ways you can improve your presentations and your grade. I don't know how he compares with other speech profs, but I found him to be thought provoking, courteous and helpful to everyone. He holds open discussions at the start of each class, encouraging you as Americans to exercise free speech. Although most of us hate GE's and public speaking in particular, this class will help you gain confidence in this area. Schultz is ok.

Professor Schultz will make you think, about what you say in discussions and speeches, and in your writing assignments. He keeps things interesting by using videos, stories, even playing his guitar and singing to illustrate points. Be prepared to attend classes, he grades you down if you don't, especially when speeches are being given. But a dreaded class can be fun, even the impromptu speeches! I enjoyed his class and his overall approach. He is a pretty hard grader, but the midterm is easy because he prepares you well. I even named my bird Mr. Schultz because he is such a good communicator!

Mr. Schultz starts every class with open discussion. A lot of the talk is about the war in Iraq, so he wants you to think about what you say. He is a Vietnam veteran and is opposed to the way we went into this war, but says he doesn't want you to agree with him, but to express your opinion. As the class went on I overcame my shyness and joined in the discussion. And I noticed as the quarter went on this openness helped us improve in our informative, persuasive, and impromptu speeches. I think this is a good approach.

Very good teacher, not to hard. I am not very good at public speaking and I prepared for all of my speeches the day of and easily pulled a B. Midterm was pretty simple, just study vocab. We did a paper on advertising that was fairly easy. Anyways, it is not easy to get an A but it is possible. A B however can be achieved very very easily. Schultz does a great job of getting the class to know each other so you feel more comfortable. He also tells you exactly what he expects from your speech so it's pretty simple to create your speeches. Good teacher, I'd recommend.

The first speech is REALLY important, because future grades depend upon the first impression you make. Grades fairly; gives you the benefit of the doubt. Be prepared, but not altogether rehearsed. Make sure you don't do any of the things he lists as his pet-peeves (messing up on a powerpoint, going too long on a speech, etc.) because then you are in for it! Sit next to smart people because he tends to grade in clusters- people that sit together get similar grades.

Professor Schultz is an extremely understanding person. He's a funny guy too which makes the class more enjoyable. He also organizes things clearly telling you what type of speeches you have to present and shows you what is right and wrong in speech. He tells you not to memorize the speeches but I did anyway and I ended up getting As on all my speeches. The only reason I didn't get an A overall was because I didn't study for the midterm and didn't do so well on that. The midterm is just like any other test with questions about the textbook. But that's the only written test. There is also a paper you need to write which you might need to spend some time on. Overall as long as you put effort into your speech and make it decently presentable he will like you and you will do fine.
