Hearing this should say it all: I'm in engineering and have always hated studying english. This teacher made the subject enjoyable. (As enjoyable as a class can be.) You don't use textbooks in the class--you use writing help books, written by real authors, that actually have some flavor. And there isn't too much reading if you keep up. Quizzes are easy if you do the reading, and points missed can be made up. The writing requirement for the class is the best part: You write three essays on whatever you choose and you decide when your own essays are due. You also have time in class to get help with the writing. It's a great class because the teacher has a great system.

Strohman is a great professor. She presents the material totally clear. She makes the writing assignments very do-able. You chose your own due dates for the three essays and there are hardly any other assignments, aside from the nightly reading. The reading is easy though. You should definitely do it though because she calls on people in class to discuss the chapters. She is a great instructor.

Professor Strohman is a friendly professor;however, she fails to recognize student difficulty. She is a good professor however, she like to give busy work. Her journals are pointless, and she doesn't even read them. Ohh also she treats the class like you are all going to be writers when in reality most of the people taking the class are engineers and could give a damn about stupid english classes which the university makes you take, damn beaurocrats. She may be friendly but she is not a morning person, and she gets upset when you are late, but she is periodically late. She grades relaatively difficult on essays, and she says she doesn't choose favorites but she really does and grades your essay on who you are and not on yoru ability. If a student submitted an essay by a famous writer, she would most likely grade it difficult if she didn't like the person. And he stupid lame annoying sinister communistic quizes she makes you take very thursday are stupid and i think they are a waste of time and she should abolish them. Ohh and her website is stupid.

Worse English teacher I've ever had. I'm glad she's gone. If she comes back, don't take her. I went into that class really enjoying English. (Not so much the literature part, but more the writing side.) I basically walked out of that class hating both. I'd say that's a pretty sad statement about a professor. Her assigments are useless. The journals are a joke. She wasn't very helpful at anything. I didn't learn anything in that class except for a strong dislike, perhaps even a hatred, of English. I know that seems ironic given my grade in the class, but she truly was an awful teacher. Not much more I can say about that.

Strohman is a good professor, and can be relatively easy. There are times during this class where you will wonder "didn't we learn this in middle school?" She covers the material she expects you to know very well. the quizzes are totally obvious and easy, but she grades essays VERY HARD. apparently she doesnt realize that she doesnt have a class full of english majors. oh, and she is completely unforgiving on the final grade. i was one point away from an A (ONE FREAKING POINT) and she wouldnt give it to me. Normally i would be okay with this except for the way that she grades, which is totally subjective to what she likes and doesnt like. you better get on her good side the first day, it will help you a lot on essay grades. If given the choice, I would take this professor again purely because i was on her good side and got some lenience on my essays, which was why i was so close to an A in the first place. If you can suck up to a teacher and do 15 mins of outside work a week, this is the class for you.

Anne-Marie Strohman is a tough teacher no doubt, but it isn't the difficulty of the coarse that can make or break you in her eyes. She presents her material in a quick "once over" fashion in class, and then gives you assignments that pertain to the subject matter. Then comes the part she loves best, destroying your papers with a red pen. I myself have never done worse than a B in any english class I have ever taken, but failed to gain anything better than a C in her class. For her final project you pose a position paper, and a class dialogue in front of the class which isn't all that hard, so you think. You are grouped up, which is the funny part becaues other people in my group scored a B or higher, where as I only needed a C on the final project to get a C in the class. I went to her for help on my paper, and wrote it to her liking, but even then did she give me lower than a C on the final project. She has class pets, and those she rather not have in her class at all. My advise is to get on good terms with her right off the bat, and im sure you will do fine.

This professor made English 145 a living hell for me. First off, let me say that I'm very good at English. I've always gotten A's, and I got an A in 134 from a teacher that only gave two A's. I went to Strohman numerous times on my final paper, which is a 7-10 page paper, and still couldn't pull off an A. In order to get an A in the class, you must get a 940 out of 100 total points. That is a 94%! Also, all of her assignments are graded in about six or seven categories. Examples are clarity, editing, etc. For each category, she will give you an acceptable, unacceptable or a superior. If you get ONE unacceptable, you get an automatic D. Avoid this lady at all costs. She's a pain in the ass grader, and I think she should take a course in logic, because her methods don't make sense.

There is something you need to know about this teacher. Although she can give an interesting cirriculum, she is very biased on her essays almost like she doesn't want to allow good grades in her class. She did make a curve which made things a little decent, but hear is where she is nasty. On her final project you better treat it like your life b/c she grades in a sadistic way and show up even if you are teminally ill!!! She docked major participation points ( a big chunck of your final grade) from a kid in my class because he had to go to his friend's funeral ( that is considered a school emergency and by school policy THE TEACHER CAN'T DOWNGRADE YOU FOR A SCHOOL EMERGENCY), but she doesn't care. With her grades and her policies, the words heartless and robotic come to mind, even if it's that 40% of your grade final project. She also made me very intimidated to talk to her during office hours. In other words, good teacher but too cruel to allow you to succeed in her class (unless you are her teacher's pet, and even her faves get treated harsh)
