This class was pretty easy; reading almost every night but really short chapters. Once you get used to his funny voice where he puts emphasis on unusual syllables, he's easy to understand and covers everything pretty clearly. Imagine a nerdy guy who collected 1000 pennies one year, and who does little statistics experiments in his basement. There are quizzes almost every day, but if you do the reading you'll be fine. The grading for the homework is really nitpicky, be sure to have detailed answers. Tests are open book, open-note, open-handout, and you get a page of notes! Still you should understand the concepts. He's not the most interesting guy but I'd recommend him.

Rossman is a great professor. Sometimes he's funny. He was very understanding when I got caught in a traffic jam and came to the midterm 20 minutes late. Projects are graded very fairly, and the quizzes are super easy if you were in class that day. (He drops the four lowest ones, anyway.) He has an outline for the class notes that you can print out and bring with you. Believe me, you'll want to, because you can use the notes on the final and midterm. In fact, the entire class is open book and open note. Most quizzes are open-classmate, too. I don't think you really need to read the book; just bring it with you for the tests and you'll be fine. I put almost no effort into this class and got an A. All in all, a very easy and painless way to meet a GE.

This was Professor Rossman's first time teaching the class in what he said to be about 7 years. As a person, he's very sweet and at best, adorable. He loves cats and I enjoyed all of his lectures. The book for the class helps a lot in preparing for the tests, but the two midterms and final are very difficult. It's not the course material that's hard, it's Rossman's method of grading. He is VERY particular about what he wants. It's crucial that you study the in-class quizzes and homework quizzes. You get to use a page of notes for each test but with that, Professor Rossman looks for key vocabulary terms in all of your responses and adequate calculations. Overall, I enjoyed the class, despite his tough grading. He's a really nice guy and always willing to help.

Class was pretty simple, same homework and in class lectures every week with super easy quizzes through PolyLearn. All quizzes and homework assignments were online. Class did not require a lot of outside work. Allowed to use one page front and back with notes for tests which helps a lot because for the most part the questions are all free response. Some test questions came straight from the handouts so keep that in mind when making a cheat sheet. Overall super nice man that was super passionate about stats and his cats.

Stat 150 was co-taught by Rossman and Chance so I am writing the same review and posting the same thing for each. Really this course is fun. You do lots of projects, a few homeworks, presentations, "portfolio" assignments, exams, and fill out lots of class work which isnt collected. The exams are not a big % of your grade, but there are 2 midterms. The final is just a project/presentation. This course is very doable. The actual work is easy but it is tedious at times. Stay on top of your projects/homework/presentations and you will easily get an A or B. Like I was saying the material is pretty elementary, but you need to stay on top of things! It is very nice having co-teachers. Rossman talks funny but is super cool and nice. Chance is good too (she's also very good looking so sometimes it's hard to stay focused). This guy is one of my favorite instructors so far. He's awesome, I go to class just to listen to him. He kind of reminds me of Yogi Bear... I don't know why but every time I go to class I just want to give him a hug. He's a good teacher too, seems nervous all the time but I think that's just part of the reason why he's so darn lovable. The class is pretty self explanatory. I've only missed one class, but he posts the outline for each day online so you can go back and see what you missed. It's easiest if you just go though, because he gives quizzes every day and you can miss up to 3, but some days there are 2 quizzes. Overall, it's a pretty decent class. Not as awful as Stat 217 is made out to be... so good luck. And I hope someday someone really does give him a hug. I don't think I'm going to because I feel like it would make him even more nervous.

I took Professor Rossman based on the Poly Ratings that I saw about him, assuming that I would find a professor who was helpful and knowledgeable about the material. Being someone who is absolutely dreadful at math, I felt like structure and understanding was something I needed more than anything. Rossman's classes are laid out in a very organized manner and he is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the material he teaches. However, every time I went to ask him a question, he would give me a blank stare and refused to answer me in a nice manner.

I highly recommend Dr. Rossman for anybody who has to take this class or any other one he teaches. Although i initially though it would be terrible, considering his boring tone and lectures, i learned that it wasnt so bad. He has an interesting sense of humor and is passionate about the subject. You can tell he really likes teaching. The course is made up of 2 midterms, homework(which is pretty easy), quizes(which he cancelled), and a semi-cumulative final. I think it would be pretty easy to get a B in this class by simply completing all of the work.

basically, just take Rossman. He is a fantastic and really understanding and dedicated teacher. Every lecture is lead by a worksheet over the computers, and you can print out your own version of these worksheets to follow along..which is VERY helpful considering every test is open note and open book...homework is optional and you get about 16 investigation assignments which completely parallel the lecture and arent hard if you have taken good notes from the lecture print outs....tests are easy also if you have good notes, and have organized them well because, well, midterms are kinda a press for time if you just bring allllllll of your notes....sooo take Rossman if you can, it is DEFINATELY worth it

Professor Rossman did an excellent job of presenting the material, and his printed notes made following along very easy. Rather than focusing on writing everything down, you could listen to what he was saying. Professor Rossman puts a lot of time and effort into his classes, and it shows!

Rossman is an awesome teacher and I would take him again, if possible! He has outlines of the notes online that you can print out before class so that you are focused on the problems and concepts rather than writing frantically. The midterms and final are open note/open book which also helps because you have everything in front of you and if you understand how to use the formulas you will succeed because you don't have to memorize a ton of stuff. Take the class with a friend or make one because the hw assignments are much easier if you work with a partner and turn in one paper for both of you. Great teacher, take him!!

I was sure I would struggle with statistics since I have never done well in any class involving numbers and calculations, however professor Rossman is an excellent teacher and I came out with a C and a new respect for statistics. His tests take FOREVER, the amount of time given is defiantely not enough even with open note open book, so I got F's on 2 of the midterms and a C on the other. As long as you do well at the homework and quizzes which you can work in pairs for the most part, and understand the concepts you can pass this class without a doubt. Luckily the final is 3 hours which was plenty of time to complete the cummulative exam. Another suggestion, print out every set of notes AHEAD of time, and keep them organized it realllllllyyyy helps on the tests to be organized.

Professor Rossman is a great teacher. He has a very structured class, and you can print out the class lecture each day, which makes note taking very easy. He does not assign homework from the book, but he has investigation assignments, and assigns about two a week. All tests are open note, open book. He has three mid-terms all of which you have to rush to finish, and one final which you have plenty of time for. He is very reasonable with his grading. He also gives small quizzes very often in class, as a way of giving you participation. They are not too difficult and are an easy way to get points. I would strongly recommend him, especially if you are just taking this as a GE.

In a course for nonmajors, too much time was spent rushing through how to do calculations and far too little on the principles and applications of statistics. Nonmajors very likely will forget within weeks the calculations they learned to do. What they need to remember are basic concepts about how and when statistics are used, and how to identify when statistics are being misused.

Dr. Rossman is awwwwesome. He posts daily outlines online so you can focus on examples and not scrawling notes super fast. All his tests are open book AND open notes so if you don't at least pass then its your fault. There are quite a few quizzes but again, they're all open note, and most of them are partnered. He doesn't give homework except for 10 point 'investigations' like once a week. He's funny (even though sometimes I don't think he tries to be) and he sounds like Dr. Evil. Rossman does not go over the majority of information that he tests on; somehow he just expects you to know various facts. When I asked for help, he just read the question back to me and couldn't explain it at all. He is such a nice human, but the average for every test was a C or D, and I feel as though this average reflects upon the teacher's ability to actually teach the material to students, not the failure of the students.

Good proffesor. He knows his material very well, and is helpful whenever you have questions. BUT, he plows through the material fairly fast and I feel he fails to make connections between handouts. It's one of those math-type classes where you're like: ok do this, do that... - but then you're kinda lost how to draw connections with what you are learning and how it relates to the real world. I know he gives good example in his handouts but this is just how I feel. Once you start probability which is around week 5-6, it gets confusing. He is really confusing on this subject and just throws a ton of equations at you. Be prepaired for this chapter. Overall the class is like so: 10-15%ish on HW 10-15%ish on quizzes (inclass group or inclass solo or take home) 40% on two midterms. 30% on final. 5% extra to what ever gives you the highest grade. He MIGHT curve slightly at the end just for some adjustments but don't count on it. Also, everything is open note. Quizes, midterm, and final. DONT count on this. The midterm and final require you understand the material very well. Your notes will NOT help you one bit if you don't understand that stuff in the first place. Like always: Study everyday. Ask questions. Do the optional book questions.

Make sure you print out the handouts and fill them out in class, as everything is open book, open notes so you want to have as comprehensive of notes as possible! You'll take a lot of quizzes (1 for every handout) so about 22 in the whole quarter, they are group quizzes so don't worry. You can also drop the lowest of the 3 quiz scores too! You also have to do weekly assignments that you can also work on in a group, they are take home assignments and pretty easy. I highly recommend Professor Rossman. His classes are very structured and organized. My class was in a computer lab, we used MINITAB frequently, never had to calculate any test statistics, etc by hand. Quizzes are usually in class with partners and are open note. The only homework is quick \"investigation assignments\", basically small projects that put what you\'ve learned in class into application. They take less than an hour to do and he gives you a generous number of days to complete them. 2 midterms and 1 final, all open book and open note. There are many quizzes (in-class), but they\'re easy and they help boost your grade. The textbook for my class was Business Statistics, the same one used in STAT 251, but I found the textbook unnecessary for Rossman\'s course. Instead, he provides note handouts on his website that should be printed and followed along during class. They are very helpful, and of course, may be used on the tests/quizzes. Dr. Rossman is a pretty cool guy. I could tell that he spent a lot of time out of class preparing little projects and in class assignments. Generally the in class things are really good examples, and if you miss a day you should probably go to his lecture as all of the info is important for the midterm final. He gave us a review sheet for each midterm which really focuses studying. The other cool thing is that there is a handout for each day (mostly) of class which works you through the information. It is a lot of filling in but his whole lecture goes off of it. So if you are confused about anything when studying for a test, you can go back to the "day 12" handout and get the idea. STAT 321 is a pretty easy course - which is nice, since it's required for just about all engineers. Dr. Rossman gave us the option to do homework or not in the beginning of the year. DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, DO THE HOMEWORK. It's graded VERY carefully, and brought down nearly everyone who did it's grade. And it has little to do with lecture. Otherwise, class was simple. It was all based on worksheet-like handouts, and Dr. Rossman was really good about answering questions. The book was a piece of junk though. It was written by Devore, the head of the statistics department. Why can't Cal Poly professors write decent books? This just made the homework, and studying even harder. You're better off with office hours.

STAT 321 is just one of those classes you have to wade through. There is not much that's particularly hard. Just do the usual; kinda pay attention, kinda look over the handouts, kinda do the homework. But I agree with the review below -- do NOT have the homework count unless you yourself are really anal about making sure it's right. Other than that, just keep an eye out for Rossman's odd speaking -- his voice trails UP at the end of phrases, as opposed to down, like everybody else's.

Maybe if you are a stat major, or have taken a previous course in stats you should try this guy out. I am neither of those people, and therefore cannot recommend Rossman at all. Dr. Rossman, basically, doesn't teach anything. You go into class, he gives you a worksheet, and then asks you to fill it out in your group. He then uses screens displaying his copy of the worksheet, and goes through writing the correct answers down so fast you have 0 time to understand them as you are madly trying to write it down. This is what the entire class period of everyday will be made up of. Mindless copying of his answers. There were too many times where I would have to go over and over the worksheets with my math major friend and it was like it was the first time I had actually SEEN and understood the information. He gives you an option of either having homework graded, or not graded, and the point totals shift based on what you choose. I chose homework and ended with about an 88% homework average. Expect each homework assignment to take like 4-6 hours. There are Labs each week as well, which he lies and says he will give class time for. There were very few occasions where this was true, and generally I had to do it at home on my own computer. Basically that meant 2 homework assignments a week each taking 4-6 hours to complete. I would recommend doing the homework no matter which grading schema you chose, as it does help you understand the material he doesn't teach. On top of all this you get the joy of studying for a weekly quiz(which thank the lord is commonly group oriented). The quizzes are usually from the homework, which is another reason why you should be sure to do it. Now onto the tests. I aced the first test perfect score, because it was all logic stuff that I already understood from other math courses. After that it got more into stuff that in theory he would have been teaching me, but in practice failed to. This caused me to eat a big D for done on that one. In order to escape on the final I had to study more than you could imagine and practically take the class again from my friend who understood everything. The tests are hard. Really hard. When you do your homework, do it knowing that the problems on the tests are nothing like the problems in the book. He gives you a list of problems to do before the test(optional) that covers things that will be on it. On the second midterm, none of the problems resembled the ones he put on the study guide. That was majorly uncool. Before each midterm he gave a review session at night. I went to the one before the final, and his partner Dr. Chance was also there. I learned more form Dr. Chance during that one study session than, honestly, the entire quarter. If you have to take this class, take it with Chance.

Rossman was a really great teacher, the only thing that I really didn't like was the Statistics he tried to teach me. Rossman presents the material very well, he has great lectures and great examples and is a very interesting teacher. I didn't not fall asleep in his class once. The only thing that can keep you from getting an A in this class is if you don't pay attention to the lectures or labs at all, never read the book, and don't do the homework like me. But even if you try to learn everything 2 days before exams, you can still get a B in the class.

Although I didn't do too well in his course, he's a great instructor. He gives out handouts and goes through it which helps a lot. His labs aren't too hard and his quizes are real easy. His website is great too because he puts all the handouts and solutions on there.

Nice Guy, Decent Teacher, Bad grader, lost half of my Labs causing me and my lab partner to get a grade lower than we should have. Jim Daly is MUCH better.

I chose to take Dr. Rossman based on the fact that he had such great reviews here on Polyratings. Well, after having taken one of his courses, I don\'t have that great of an opinion of him as a teacher. He knows what he\'s teaching extremely well, but fails at effectively helping students to learn it. If you are not a highly self-motivated studier, you will likely do very poorly in this course. He did not collect any assigned practice work. So you must be motivated enough to do quite a bit of practice work on your own. I am not motivated enough, so that\'s mainly why I got a C. I\'ve only had one prior instructor that did not assign homework and that\'s the only other course I\'ve ever gotten a C in. Dr. Rossman structured his lecture around 24 handouts, which he provided in PDF form on the course website. He often made the handout for that day available about an hour before class. Or he\'d add a page or re-write it. Each handout was 3-6 pages typed, covered one topic for the course, and about usually started out with some basic information, equations, etc. The rest of the handout consisted of un-worked/unanswered example problems and questions with blanks below each. So during the lecture, he\'d start from the top of the handout and work his way through it answering questions and working out the problems on the board. He wrote very quickly, small, and sloppy on the chalkboard. He also moved very quickly through the handouts and rarely let you know that he had moved on to the next question. So if you\'re not paying attention 100% of time, it was easy to miss answers. I had a lot of trouble because I was often too preoccupied with trying to decipher and copy down what he wrote on the board to listen and mentally process his lecture. He does not provide filled in versions of the handouts. If you missed anything, you have to see him in office hours and he will help you fill it in. After he completed the lecture on each handout, he\'d give a 2-6 question quiz. So yes there were 24 quizzes! For most of them, he would try to leave 10-15 minutes toward the end of class to have the students complete and submit it before the end of class. A little less than half of the quizzes were take-home. For about 4 of the in-class quizzes, he required students to work individually. For the rest, including the take-home quizzes, he allowed students to work in groups of 3-4. As far as the in-class quizzes, I thought it was wrong to quiz students on material that he had just finished lecturing on. So the only way to succeed on all the quizzes was to learn the material on your own prior to him teaching it. For all the quizzes including the take-home ones, he would not provide any assistance at all. So if you couldn\'t figure it out from the handout, textbook, or the internet, you were screwed. The textbook, \" Probability and Stochastic Processes...\" by Yates was of little help - very few worked example problems and Dr. Rossman made up his own problems, which were often quite different from any in the book. All of his exams are open-book/open notes. But his exams were long and he usually made the problems different from any he had done as examples. So the open-book/notes policy was of little help unless you had done a huge amount of practice on all the material. As a transfer student, this is my second year at Poly. So I have had many instructors, but this is the first time I\'ve felt compelled to rate one. Overall, I\'m very unsatisfied with Dr Rossman\'s teaching of STAT-350.

This STAT 350 class has become my most HATED class in all my years of schooling. His speech impediment is EXTREMELY distracting in lecture. He presents you with fill in lecture notes, but most of the time he goes way too fast to be able to decipher. We ended the quarter with 25 "surprise" quizzes. He is extremely confusing and unclear, and unfortunately his speech impediment carries over to his tests. It’s really awkward to watch this guy try to teach and/or speak most of the time. Engineers, beware. I recommend any other professor.

The below comment about his `speech impediment\' is borderline harassment, in the real world the person that wrote it would be fired and/or sued. You should be ashamed of yourself for writing such things. I did not find his speech to be a problem at all. He is a great professor.

STAT 425 is about theory, and in this regard Rossman failed miserably. He took a theory and proofy course and turned it into 325 with harder problems and intensive grading. I'm sorry, but I'm not impressed.

Rossman is a great professor who knows statistical theory really well. He lectures pretty well providing lots of examples and explanations to the material and is really helpful in his office giving you everything you need to know except for answers to the homework. Pretty much the only bad thing about this professor is that his office is so messy. Rossman is great for anyone needing to take a stats class.

Great professor! He knows the material inside and out. He is very approachable and helpful. He is passionate about statistics and makes it very enjoyable. He challenges the class with homework problems that took quite a bit of time, but definately prepare you for the tests. The final was take-home and each midterm had an inclass and take-home portion.

He is a really excellent professor. He is very knowledgeable about statistics and knows how to teach it really well. This guy is a very well-known statistician who has made lots of publications along with his partner Dr. Chance. He is fair in his expectations of you and will do whatever is necessary (outside of giving away the answers to homework, of course) to help you understand. Tests are part in-class and part take-home so that he will challenge you fairly on tests. Lectures are enjoyable as he likes to use different real-life examples such as McDonald's french fries and Reese's Pieces to help you learn. He is a very great professor to be around, so if you have the opportunity to take him, do so. BTW, he is married to the ME professor Eileen.
