Art Young's class can be absolutly great or it can absolutly suck and it all comes down to the students in it. Each day the majority of lecture is going over the case analysis that was assigned to be read. If most people have read it, Young leads the class in great discussions that you can learn a lot from. If people haven't read it... Art needs a little anger management. He'll yell, cuss, cancel the class and scare the shit out of everyone telling you that if anyone's not prepared for the next class they'll lose 15% of their grade. Not to scare you though... the class isn't too hard. Your grade consists of an in-class group case analysis, a group final project, one individual case analysis midterm, and attendence and participation. He lets you choose (within a certain range) how much each component is worth of the total possible (i.e. project: 25-40%, midterm: 15-30%, etc.)

Young is a pretty passionate instructor. He really likes strategy and wants his students to appreciate it as well. He does have a temper, but if you come to class prepared and willing to participate you should do fine. I think this class was designed to deter anyone from getting senioritis. There is a lot of group work involved and you have to do a good job and understand the material (or have group memeber that understand) because if you try to BS your way through the class or on your final project he will call you on it.

This class can be strenuous at times, but you will learn a ton. I wish more classes at Cal Poly were as valuable as this one.

Awesome teacher! He loves the subject and maybe make you love it too! As long as your not a lazy ass. You MUST keep up with the reading. If you do that the class is great. If not, you get booted from the class like me. He's very stern on being ready for every class, but when you are, the class is great. I think its better than the other 401 classes because the lectures are exciting, like watching a soap opera on tv. They aren't dry like the lectures in other classes. There's no final exam either! Another humongous plus. Just two midterms and a Final project. This class is just too awesome. Except for the getting kicked out of class part that is. Warning, when he gets mad, he's mad. So mad that his hair stands up permanently. Take a look at his pic on the faculty site. His hair never goes down.

I thought that I would evaluate Professor Art Young because he takes them very seriously!!! He is a great professor; one of the best I've had at Poly. I learned a great deal from the class and I was very satisfied with it. It is not an EXTREMELY difficult class, but it is a lot of work. Professor Young expects you to come to class PREPARED and willing to participate in class discussions. If participation is not your thing, I would recommend another professor. Overall, I highly recommend this class and this professor. Strategy is a very interesting topic and Professor Young does a very good job of teaching it.

Young is a awesome teacher. He is very good at his area and is interesting too. The class is mostly group work with a big presentation at the end. You really want to make sure you get a good group. His participation is rated pretty high so make sure you talk. Your grade is divided into four things; participation, midterm, project, team exercise. The class is worth taking with him especially if you work for meat head movers.

Young is the s**t! He's an awesome guy, outstanding lecturer, and all he expects from you is some reading and decent participation. If you have half an opinion on anything, you'll do well in this class. He truly loves what he does, it shows, and he wants you to understand it and possibly get something out of his class. The group work can be a challenge, because of the nature of groups in general, but Young is great. If you have any questions about business, management, whatever, he is the guy to ask and get feedback from. Let's put it this way, Young is the teacher that you want to keep in contact with after you graduate for future advice.

Young is probably the best instructor I have ever had at Poly. Getting an A in the class helped, but I left the class feeling like I had learned more in this class about Business than I would have learned in 3 or 4 classes at Poly. The class is a good class to teach for him, and I can't really see him teaching anything else. The reason why I would recommend him is because you will actually enjoy going to class. It may sound weird, but the guy is kind of entertaining. I swear the guy is like the Diablo power plant he is so energetic, which is why his hair stands up. The ironic thing is that he used to work in the energy industry in Canada, and I think he may have been electricly charged while he was there or something. His class is fairly easy grade wise, and you will learn a lot, plus you will enjoy the class. There really is no reason why someone wouldn't like the guy, other than the few rare times that he goes "Dr. Doom" on the students. We deserved it when he went Dr. Doom on us, and I found it kind of funny as well; it adds to the entertainment and excitement of the class. I would recommend this class to anyone, and I'm sure that you will enjoy the class. Just make sure to read the cases. The Tyco one is boring as hell, but the rest of them are really good. Good luck.

Though intimidating at times, Art is an enthusiastic teacher. Come prepared and speak up and you will learn a lot. I thought I wasn't doing as well but he just wants to see you try and work hard. I wasn't looking forward to the class at the beginning but can honestly say I walked away with a lot and now have something great to put into my portfolio for post-graduation.

Probably the best teacher I had at Poly. This is one of those rare classes within the discipline of management that is actually stimulating. Young teaches you how to think. Use a priority if necessary...take him if he's teaching a course.
