This class sucked. It was a two hour snoozefest. We read an awful lot and everyday and we had to write up a discussion guide, which is graded on a credit/no credit basis. Then in class, he mumbles on about certain concepts and perspectives that we can't understand. Once we were lost, we remained lost and it was hard to follow along. He just talks on and on in class without giving us a chance to catch up on the lecture. The reading basically repeats itself, with a different culture, when you get further on in the class. There is a take home midterm essay and then a final essay worth 60% of your grade while discussion guides and participation make up the rest. Just make sure to do your reading and your discussion guides with a summary and a question or two and you earn credit. The lectures are horrible and boring. I got an 87 on the midterm and I am still awaiting my final assignment. If you want to take this class, take it with someone else because the lectures are too hard to follow.

Anyone who liked this professor was definately smoking some shit. First of all the class was BORING as hell He would just go off about stuff and had no clue what the hell he was talking about. He didn't even know how to talk he just pulled words out of his ass. "HALFIES" was one of the funniest. HENCE was his favorite word and you want to hit him when he says it every other sentence. Deninately DO NOT take this professor

I took this class last year, and didn't feel the need to comment, but after reading all the bad things about Mabry, I thought I should clarify. Mabry has a deep knowledge for the sociology of ethnic studies and the ethnic makeup of America. It may be a tad boring if you zone out, but if you really concentrate on what he's lecturing on, you'll learn a lot about some pretty important things about the country you live in and how you view other people. I honestly think this class educated me as a human being. That sounds like bullsh#%t now that I type it out, but it's the truth. He's a smart guy.

Fine teacher, but a little dry in the presentation. I wouldnt suggest having her at 8:00 in the morning, might be difficult staying awake.

Professor Mabry is not as bad as everyone evaluated him to be. Sure his class can be extremely boring at times but he is always there to help any student with questions or concerns. He is very open to suggestions even postposing essays or exams. There are 3 essays and 3 midterms. The essays are 3-4 pages each and if you ask him for help he will usually steer you towards the answer. The midterms are 30 multiple choice/true, false questions. If you are a lazy person don't take this class. Otherwise i recommend Professor Mabry because he is really nice.

I liked this class a lot. It quickly became my favorite class... and it isn't difficult at all. Just show up to class, and keep up with the reading. And the textbook that we read is more interesting than most. Mabry is pretty amicable, and he is open to questions during class.

I took this class for a GE and loved it! Mabry tells you exactly what to study for tests and answers all test questions in his lectures. The book for the class is pretty interesting but it does take a long time to get through a chapter. You do read the entire book! Mabry is the most straight forward professor i have had and grades fairly. i highly recomment this class !

Philip is thoughtful and presents the material in a fascinating and unique light. Where is he now?

Take this class credit/no-credit. This guy turns a potentially interesting class subject into a long and arduous task. It was comparable to enduring labor pains for eleven weeks and finally giving birth to an miscarried fetus. He takes roll and deducts from your grade if you miss 3 lectures. His lectures are boring, and if you try to get involved, he shuts you down (especially if you don't agree with what he's trying to forcefeed you.) You have to read about 25 pages by every class period, and then type up a discussion guide on what you read. Don' t put any effort into these, because he hardly ever reads them. To top it off, there's a 6 page term paper due. I spent more time on this class than my two upper level ME classes combined, and I actually was (god-forbid) interested in the subject matter. For a C+. My advice in retrospect: regurgitate info out of racist the books into the class "discussions", and on your term paper, even if you feel corrupted in some way. Besides, feeding him the same BS will make his job easier... everbody wins! This is a professor that doesn't care about student concerns or original thought, and is therefore a detriment to the USCP program.

This class has a ridiculous amount of work. This teacher will love you or hate you depending on how much you agree to his opinion. If you kiss his butt it seems he pays much more attention to you. If you are an opinionated person and disagree with some of the subject matter (and believe me there is a lot to disagree with), he's going to turn his nose up at you and consider your opinion irrelevant. I went into this class full of optimism and walked out with a sour taste in my mouth.

I went into this ES class thinking that it was just another GE to survive but it turned out to be one of my favorite classes. The lectures are pretty much discussion settings and I think Maybry did a good job getting people to give their opinions even though the subject material can be touchy. You read 3 books over the course of the quarter and you have to keep up or you'll bomb the tests. There is a midterm, a non-cumulative final (all essays) and then a paper to write at the end. Otherwise you do small presentations of the reading which aren't fun but they're better than homework.

This prof is straightforward. Do the readings, which are not too much if you do them regularly. He is a nice guy and explains the previous nights reading very well. However attendance is mandatory, your grade will drop after a two missed classes. Midterms are straight forward. Directely off of the readings. The Final is just like the midterms. The only killer part of the class is the term paper, which I have done before will require a lot of research. He grades it a bit harsher than the midterms. Over all, I WOULD NOT TAKE THIS CLASS AGAIN FOR GE BECAUSE THERE ARE FAR EASIER CLASSES TO TAKE THAT SATISFY THE REQUIREMENT. I got a C because I missed so much class at one point. I would have recieved a B, and A was not out of reach.

The class is called "The Chinese American Experience." Dr. Mabry is a sociologist by training. After spending an entire quarter deconstructing and demystifying the proletarianizationist paradigm that was enabled by various subalternate sects vis-a-vis mainstream society, I now can see why sociologists are scorned by the rest of academia. This was NOT a sociology class, and Dr. Mabry did the subject a grave disservice with every one of his wishy-washy, nonsense lectures. This man has probably never had a coherent, logically sound thought in his entire life. He's reasonable and fair when you ask him to adjust a grade, though. Oh yes, and he's a nice person.

First, read the review below this. If you take this class, you'll soon recognize that this fool is speaking the same psycho-babble as Mabry... He makes no sense either in his big words. "proletarianizationist"..? Last I heard, that isn't a word. It is for this reason, (this lack of reason rather) that people such as him get grade adjustments. They operate on the same wavelength as those they claim no allegiance to... the same lost souls who hand out grades. Even so, don't take Mabry. And, I'm drunk. And if you go into Mabry's office, and find this guy kissing a$$... well, if you have to take the class, know what you need to do to get the grade, because, ultimately, in 6 months (we all have short attention spans) you won't care about this j3rkoff, or how much a$$ you had to kiss, but only your GPA.

Professor Mabry is not really that bad of a teacher. He really presents the material well and if you keep up with the reading, the class is really easy. the hard part is keeping up with all the reading though. We never had any homework except to present a chapter to the class once in awhile. Mabry was pretty shy and quiet in our class and it seemed like we were really teaching the class ourselves with all the group presentations. there is a midterm, term paper, group work, class participation and a final that factor your grade. there were never any quizzes. I think Professor Mabry did a good job.

This class is insanely boring. It's one of those classes that makes you feel like falling off your chair, landing flat on the floor, and drooling off to sleep. However, this really isn't Dr. Mabry's fault. Even I, as a Chinese American, found the material of 'limited interest,' to be exceedingly civil. The funny thing is, I did learn quite a lot of stuff I didn't know previously. It actually has changed my perspective somewhat, and I suppose this is as good as one can hope for when teaching a class like this. Considering this, and despite his rather monotonous voice and the long, droopy sessions, I must say that Dr. Mabry is doing a good job. If you're looking for an engaging, enlightening experience then look elsewhere. If you want a fair teacher that will give you a good grade for doing the assigned reading and coming to lecture, then this is the professor to take.
