This professor did an excellent job making art and art history interesting. I went into the class not a big fan of art appreciation, but she reveals different works and details about them that you can't help but be interested in. The tests are not difficult at all, just make sure you know the study guides front and back. It's all memorization. She takes the best of 2 out of three midterms plus the final. There's no homework except for the reading, which is very helpful if you do. This is an excellent professor and i highly recommend her.

Good luck staying awake in this class. . . follow your study guides and you should do OK. Lorenz always managed to be pleasant enough, and I do think she tried to make it easier for us to get decent grades~ the extra credit helped a lot. Botom line though, the class itself was extremely boring and I'd reccomend trying to take something else.

First off, if you need a fine elective requirement, take Dr. Lorenz's class. This has to be the easiest class I've had since 8th grade. If you don't like art, you might find this pretty boring, as it's largely an art history lecture. It's by no means hard, however, and if you do like art it could be quite interesting. I found it rather relaxing. There are three exams worth all the grade. The lowest of the first two is thrown out, and there's an extra credit assignment that will raise you up one grade level if you do it (e.g. B- to B). Also, you probably don't need the textbook. It couldn't hurt to read it and study, but if you go to lectures and take notes, and do the extra credit, you'll probably get an A regardless.

Art can be interesting, but the lectures for this class aren't. Not to say I didn't enjoy it, it was sort of relaxing, and as a class was an easy A. I was surprised by how little people showed up for lecture. If you go to lecture, study a couple hours before the tests, do the extra credit assignment, and generally don't fuck around, then you get an A. Just what a GE class should be. Lecture lasts an hour and a half with break. Take it and good luck.

The class was pretty straight forward. 3 Midterms and a Final. She gives study guides for each test telling exactly what you need to know. Follow the study guide and the class should be fine. Class was a bit boring at times though. Lecture is done completely with slides. If you like memorizing a bunch of things, take this class.

TAKE THIS CLASS!!! I wasn't interested in art at all before this class and now I can appreciated it a little more but here's the part you're probably looking for. 4 tests are given, of the first 3 the top 2 grades are used and test 4 (the final, a regular test) is manditory. So a total of 3 tests make up your grade. Also, she gives you a review sheet that is basically all of the information you need to know to get 100% on her tests so learn it! There is chance for extra credit if you write a paper on an artist which can raise your grade a half a letter.

This is quite possibly the easiest class you can take at Poly. The class consists of 4 tests that take no longer than a half hour each and are all multiple choice. That's it. You get to throw out the lowest of the first three exams, which tricks people not into taking the third exam which is probably the easiest of the first three. The entire class period you look at slides of art while the teacher talks about them. As for the teacher, Professor Lorenz is a nice lady that is enthusiastic about the material. However, the class can be extremely boring at times. Defintely take this class to fulfill whatever GE it takes care of. It is a very easy class to crash; people were still getting in the second week of class. If you dont get an A, or at least a B in this class, you don't deserve to go to this school.

This class was pretty cool and easy, but it didn't have much depth. We only looked at about 30 pieces of art which is cool if you want an A without studying, but if you are really interested in art you aren't going to learn too much. This class really just kind of skims the surface. The teacher is good and I didn't think class was that boring. I do think that college students are extremely rude though. Some people in this class never shut up which is really distracting. If you need to gossip please don't do it in class because it makes me want to hit you upside the face.

Interesting class. She is a very nice teacher, that cares about her students, she was probably a hippie (seriously). No hw, no quizees, extra credit in class, 3 midterms and a noncummulative final. No real need to attend class, she gives write up notes. The only thing that class offers is a pleasant atmosphere and she shows examples of art that are not in the text. An easy "A".

An easy A. If you get the book and the study giudes for the tests then you don't even need to go to class. It's a good class to have after lunch though because it's taught in a large cool dark room which is great for taking a nap. She only grades your best two out of three midterms and the final...and all the test are about 50 questions multiple choic and fill in the blank.

Classes are slow moving sometimes only covering 3 pieces of art per 2 hour class. Its all power point lecture and is generally pretty boring. I attend pretty much every class but you could skip class as long as you get the notes. The tests are all memorization of art pieces really easy. Nice women and very passionate about art, you'll review some interesting pieces and find out some cool information. Nice new understanding of art.

Easy going class. Tests are pretty easy. 3 midterms and a final but you get to throw out your lowest midterm score. Would definitely recommend taking her for C3 even though the lectures could be really boring and put you to sleep. Great professor though! She's really passionate about art which helps.

LORENZ ROCKS!!! I took professor Lorenz for both Art 112 & 111 and loved the classes. The classes are only lecture based, no attendance, just make sure if you skip class get notes from a friend. She usally drops one of the midterms and if you get A's the first two you dont have to take the third midterm. DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK.....the class notes are all you need to get a solid A in the class. Her notes are orderly, and the power point of artwork helps to break up the class from being just a lecture kind of class.... ALSO if you are a graduating senior and are desperately crashing for classes your last quarter, definitely come to her first day of class....this was my case and she let me in after i came to the next two classes...Shes understanding and is always willing to help her students. I have learned so much about art history that I cant wait to throw my knowledge out at like a cocktail party. TAKE LOrenz if at all possible =)

She was really a nice lady, always willing to re-explain if we did not understand. The class itself, is not too interesting because its art history, but it is really easy. She basically gives u exact definition of what is on the tests. There are a total of 4 tests, and out of the first 3, she drops your lowest score. I got an A on the first 2, so i didnt even bother taking the 3rd one, which is perfectly fine! :) To prepare for this class, definitely go to class and listen and take notes b/c there is no blackboard, but instead an online website. I think the best was to study, MAKE FLASH CARDS! they REALLY work. But this class is easy, id recomend it for the C3.

Professor Lorenz makes art inspirational. Although art wasn't such an exciting subject matter to me before, I love going to class. Professor Lorenz is an easy-going, pleasant person. There are 3 midterms and one final. She drops the lowest midterm grade, or you can even just take 2 of the three! Memorization is key in this class since you will have to remember details from slides and background information. I would definitely recommend this class to those who have good memorization skills. =)

Art history was always something I wanted to know, but never had the chance. So I enrolled in Lorenz' class and with high hopes, and every expectation has been exceeded so far. She is a great teacher, very caring and knowledgable, and explains the material clearly. Tests are easy with just a couple hours of studying (and, of course, attendence and good notes) required. Basically, the grade you get is the grade you deserve. If anyone wants a solid, basic background on art and its history, Lorenz is the ish.

I was really dreading this class. I had to take it for a general ed requirement. The only reason that I chose it was because the other options were worse. I wasn't about to do Dance Appreciation. Luckily the class was very good. That's coming from a science major who would rather chop off a toe than go to an art exhibit. The material was very easy. Follow the study sheets that she hands out. That's the most important thing. Most of the pictures are in the book, but I suggest that you go to class anyway. The book does not have all of the information concerning the pictures. You study mostly a few selected pictures, and you need to know a lot about them. Sometimes the book only identifies a picture and nothing else. There is a web site with all of the missing pictures. This is very helpful because you have to identify some of the pictures on the test. I would recommend this class to non-liberal arts majors.

this class was not only easy but it was fun, i would suggest taking this class to anyone, i was able to crash it, and boy was i lucky. she categorizes everythign for you, to make it easy, gives you a study guide, and has 4 equal tests, one is taken during finals week, your lowest test is dropped, only the last test is cumulative, and barely, she offers an extra credit assignment, which is basically a 4 page paper, where you imagine yourself visiting the works of art, very easy, and maybe a little fun,, maybe.. but it was very easy, i wrote it from my freinds notes, the trick to this class is very simple,, go to class,, thats it,, you dont need the book, you dont need to take notes.. in fact dont buy the book, you wont ever need it,, jsut study from the study guide the night before the test and you will do jsut fine,, the avg on the tests for the whole class was like a B+,, thats how easy it is,, lorenz is aslo a really cool teacher, she wants you to come talk to her during office hours, im not sure if anyone realyl did, but it was always an option, if anyone needed help, and she was always very nice about any complaints or problems on the test,, she was totally in our favor about every topic,, totally cool lady,, i would take her again if i ever got the chance, thats how much i liked her/the class...

This class is pretty boring. The entire class consists of memorizing the history behind the paintings. Well, not all of the history. It's a pretty chill class. It's pretty much the same thing every class. Look at slides, know the style, subject matter, function...blah blah for 2 hours... Tests aren't too bad..the desks are so close together you pretty much look at the person next to you...not that I did though. She also offers an extra credit assignment that will boost you up half a grade, like B+ to A-. Pretty easy, jus pay attention, take good notes, usually some cute girls are in this class so it's pretty good, try to sit next to one of em, get their number. You think i'm kidding huh? I'm serious, this class is boring, u better find some good way of occupying your time. 3 tests and final, equally weighted. She drops ur lowest of the 3 tests. It's a good thing this class is only 2 days a week.

I guess its a good option for a GE class but you are going to want to shoot her and yourself by the end of the quarter... I pretty much stopped going after awhile because I couldn't stand to listen to her ANNOYING voice and see her stupid mullet. It's pretty easy though so I guess I would recommend it since the other fine art elective options don't sound too great either.

Take this class (111, and 112 - I had her for both) with Mindy . I definitely have a greater interest in art and I appreciate her enthusiasm and dedication. The curriculums are well laid out and fair, with ample opportunity to do well, including an extra credit paper to boost your grade a half letter. Although people skip the class or leave at break, I went to every one just b/c she explains everything you need to know while viewing slides of the artwork, which made it way easier on the tests to associate the work with all the info.

Take a gun right now, put it too your head and pull the trigger, cause you'll want to by the end of the quarter. I was so relieved to get out of that class. No offense to Mrs. Lorenz, she's an excellent teacher, and gets the material across excellently. Its just that she does it in the most boring possible way. Her Tests are straight forward and you just have to look over and memorize the notes you get in class. I just couldnt take the class. You get the most uncomfortable seats ever yet you find yourself asleep in them within 30minutes of class. I just gave up going, and got the notes from a friend who still thought it was worth it to go. If you like art and can stand being lectured at, then this is for you. There was nothing very difficult about the class, and I don't really believe you can say anything good or bad about Lorenz. ART 112 was just a class where she showed a slide, told a story about it, and then asked you about the story on the test with multiple choice responses. It was really easy. Never studied and got a 'B+'. She's also pretty fair, because she gives an extra credit assignment that lets you bring your grade up a third. She did give some BS about modern art and what it means...but oh well...we all had some good laughs over it.

The tests were really easy and straight-forward, just make sure you remember the basic info for each piece and go to lecture!!! Survey of Western Art is a super easy class. The material Lorenz presents in the lecture is exactly what's on the test. So if you go to lecture and take notes on what she talks about and memorize that stuff its definitley an easy A on all the tests. You are also allowed to drop a test grade (just not the final) so that helps with getting a high grade. There's an extra credit writing assignment you can also do to boost your grade up. The lecture can be pretty boring if you don't like art, but its definitley and easy A.

Don't buy the textbook. It's useless. Everything you need to know is in the lecture. You really have to go despite how boring it is! Make flashcards! This class involves a bunch of memorization and regurgitation.. I'm not a big fan of that kind of learning so I didn't enjoy the class much. I don't fall asleep in class.. I just don't! I fell asleep in her class near the end of the quarter 3 times!! The course is a survey: designed mostly to spark interest and motivate students to learn more, and it did do that. I now have an overwhelming urge to tour europe, and I'm sure I'd appreciate so much of what I'd see SO much more if I do happen to follow that urge. Art 112 was one of the most interesting classes I have taken at Poly, and Dr.Lorenz is a great professor. She is extremely enthusiastic about her subject and it comes through in lecture. The class itself is all memorization of material covered in lecture, and you do not need to purchase the book. You do have to attend every lecture and take detailed notes if you want to pass. Although I do not have very good memorization-regurgitation skills (which is what is required to do well on the test), I still loved the course. This was a really interesting class but some of the sections can be kind of boring. Theres cave paintings and Egypt stuff that was kind of blah but once you got to the Greeks it started getting really interesting and it was so neat to see paintings and learn about them. Now when I go places and they have posters, I can be like, "Thats a Van Gogh" or "Thats a Seurat with his pointelism." Its really cool and you feel so cultured. But yeah, the class is neat but I didn't like her test cuz it was pure memorization. Lorenz is a pretty good teacher. The slides and reviewing art can get boring for 2 hours at a time, but overall it was a pretty good class. There are three midterms, one of which gets dropped, and one final. The final is only a bit longer than the other tests, 50 questions, as opposed to 45 for the other three tests. The tests are all multiple choice, which is very nice. There are about two fill in questions on the midterms too. She even hands out a study guide for each section with what she wants you to learn. Go to lecture, because everything on the tests is basically from lecture. I read the readings in the book, which only really helps your general background about the works, because you get more detail about the works you have to know in lecture, than in the book. Study really hard for the tests. The time periods and dates of the works are very important because she asks many questions on the tests about them. There is a lot of memorizing in this class, so put in the time for each test. Also, know the connections between artists of certain styles for the final, as there are many questions on this. The study guides help a lot, but you need to take lots of detailed notes in class and not miss lecture to do well. Overall, I would recommened this class as it was interesting many times.

A decent class to take to fulfill GE requirements. Some interesting material, but there is a lot of it. I didn't buy the book, studied only from material she lectured on an managed to get a B. An A might be possible without the textbook if you're really good at memorization. Professor Lorenz is helpful during office hours, and will go over your notecards and tell you what you're missing, since she knows what is on the test. I recommend this. Each test consists of mostly multiple choice, half questions without slides, and the other half with questions where she presents images of art on a projector. She only shows each slide once and doesn't go back. All tests except the final also have two fill-in-the-blank questions. Overall I thought the tests were fair, and the material was moderately interesting, but I'm glad it is over. Lorenz is passionate about her work and tells interesting anecdotes or stories about some of the works, but those aren't on the test (although she lets you know this). Would recommend this professor if you need a GE or if you are interested in art.

Professor Lorenz is great! She\'s extremely passionate about her subject, and it shows in her lectures. Art 112 is all powerpoints, and the tests are directly from these notes. There are 3 tests and one final, and she drops the test with the lowest grade. The tests are very straightforward as long as you study your notes. They focus mostly on dates and periods, so study that! I studied subject matter for the first test and got a C, then studied by mostly just memorizing the periods and date ranges of each artwork for the next test and got an A. There\'s an easy credit/no credit extra credit assignment at the end of the year, too. It was an interesting GE, and Lorenz is a wonderful professor. I didn't even need the book. I only used it for the research paper. Dr. Lorenz's classes are very straightforward. I didn't even buy the book because she tells you everything you need to know for the quizes and tests. She's also understanding to those who just don't understand why certain pieces are actually considered art (and some of the works are questionable), but she does do her best to explain it. The subject matter is interesting (although she turns down the lights, so if you're tired your eyes tend to want to close) and pretty easy to understand. If you go to class and take notes, then study the slides online and memorize the basic info for each, you will be fine.

Mindy is a great teacher. Take my word for it, over some silly freshmen who want to be babied and catered to. When I walk around museums, I still remember everything I learned in Mindy's classes (and Jean's too) That isn't 'memorization & regurgitation' ... it's real learning. Truth is, you're going to get out of a class what you put IN to a class. So if you want to learn, get out of your own way and LEARN. don't blame the professors for your shortcomings.
