Wilson is very passionate about what he teaches, it's almost adorable. He has this incredible talent of making a 7am class engaging and entertaining. Test are directly from lecture and lectures are very straight-forward and thoroughly explained. Very easy class. Just don't miss a day or you'll have to catch up on 4 pages of notes! (not joking)

Don't let the 7am class time turn you away! This class is soooo worth it. Only thing you have to do for this class is memorize the notes the night before the three tests! Be warned though the only grades are only these three tests so make sure you actually memorize the notes really well! Wilson was very entertaining.

Professor Wilson is hands down the best history teacher I have ever had. Considering how dry history can be, Wilson makes this class incredibly interesting, even at 7 am. He is very cynical but is amazing at linking history with anecdotes and stories that are easy for college students to understand. Take him if you can, but make sure to study for the midterms because your grade in the class is entirely based on 2 midterms and a final.

Hands down one of the best teachers I have ever had. Getting up at 7AM was difficult, but I loved his class so much that I looked forward to it. He is one of the most passionate and knowledgable teachers I have ever had. I have never been a huge fan of history, but he made me love history and I took so much from his class. All you have to do is go to class and you will do well because the tests are based completely on the lectures. I definitely recommend him!!

I'll make it easy for all of you. Take this history teacher. Do not buy the book. Memorize, and I mean memorize the notes if you want to do well on the three tests. The best teacher I have ever had the privilege of having at CPSLO. I kid you not, I looked forward to his 7 am classes. The only downside is he sometimes spends so much time on one material, he has to rush through others but that's the quarter system for you.

The absolute best history teacher I have ever had the pleasure of having. I read some of the reviews here before signing up for him just expecting another above average lecturer, but my expectations were blown away. He's extremely knowledgeable about every little detail that you go over in the course, and unfortunately because I took him during the summer he had to rush the material. Before taking this class history was my weakest subject and I hated taking it. However, I actually enjoyed Wilson's lectures because they were very engaging and he actually makes everything exciting to learn. Just take him for any class at least once before you graduate; he is truly the best.

I've always been interested in little history tidbits, but after taking this class, it's easily one of my favourite subjects! Wilson was the absolute best professor I've had to date, and probably one of the best teachers I've had in my life. Yeah, the lecture is at 7 am, but it's so worth it! His anecdotes are hilarious and he is so obviously passionate about his subject. He'll ask if you're reading the book and make little comments about it here and there, but it really isn't necessary to buy the book. Just attend lectures, because sometimes he will make comments that aren't in the prepared notes, and often those comments will become questions on the test! Don't worry though--he'll preface these comments with a "Write this down!" He really wants the students to succeed. He says almost daily that you can go to his office hours if you need help, and he's always willing to answer questions. He gives you your exam grade at the beginning of the next class, and says that if you want to look over the exam in more detail you can go to his office hours. His cynicism just made the class more entertaining. Truly a wonderful professor. 10/10 would take again.

I loved having Jon as a professor, despite having class at 7am twice a week. I have never had a more passionate teacher than him. The class isn't too hard. I pretty much crammed the night before every exam and got a B. That said, if you wanted an A, further effort would have likely been required. The tests are almost completely based off the lectures, a principle likely in place as an incentive to come because most of his lectures are at 7am. If you find yourself with 12th rotation/like to get up unnnaturally early, Wilson might be for you, that is if you also like his cynical approach to the world. Jaded though he is, he will make you laugh at least once, on average, per class. Some days he's on a roll, joke after joke - each funnier than the next. and the class will be enjoyable, even if it's super early. He'll undoubtedly crack the same joke about his ex-wife several times. He's so cynical though, that you'll likely end up feeling sorry for him. Very little material that is tested is from the book. There are 3 NON-CUMULATIVE tests, each worth 1/3rd of your grade. HE'S FUNNY

Wilson is an awesome teacher!! He gives awesome lectures that definitely made it worth it to go to class at 7 AM. The only reason why I got a C in the class was because I didn't have very good studying practices during the beginning of the class. However, I used flash cards for the final exam and I nailed it! Professor Wilson is super enthusiastic. His class was at 7am and it wasn't hard to go to at all. It was basically story time every Tuesday and Thursday morning. He is a funny guy who likes to comment on sports and current events. If you put in a good faith effort to study for the multiple choice exams, this class shouldn't be difficult. Your grade is based on 3 tests throughout the quarter, each one covering their own material.

This guy is great! He is by far the most compassionate teacher I have had here at Cal Poly. He absolutely loves history and I enjoyed going to his class, even though it was 7am. He essentially has 3 midterms, and that's it. The tests are for the most part from his notes, while a few questions are from the reading (like 1-2 out of 50 questions: 45 multiple choice, 5 free response short answers). Absolutely LOVED the class and Professor Wilson! He also makes class entertaining through his personal stories and sports.

Originally I was very excited to take this class after reading Wilson's Polyratings. However, his class was very different than expected. He reused the same transparencies that he likely made when he started teaching. His style of teaching was yelling in order to create excitement. Yelling at 7 am is not something I'm a fan of personally. He also made multiple distasteful jokes about suicide, his failed marriages, and his impending debt all the while reminding us that the only important thing in life is money and that we are all going to die alone. His tests were overly specific but if you memorized the notes you can get a B. I wouldn't take his class unless you want to be bombarded every day at 7 am.

Personally, I found Wilson annoying with the way he lectures which really just consists of yelling. But he was helpful in clarifying questions people had in class and I really appreciated only being graded on 3 non-cumulative tests. I read the required chapters every week but the in-class notes are definitely sufficient to do well on the tests, so buying the books is not necessary, especially the "For the Record..." I hate history. I really do. I'm that person who complains incessantly about having to take history GE's and how they just teach the same boring things. But Dr. Wilson's class ended up being my favorite class of the quarter, even with the 7am timeslot. I read his PolyRatings and definitely didn't believe this guy could live up to all this hype, but he totally blew my expectations out of the water; he brings history to life and is just chocked full of knowledge and is so freaking funny, he can have a whole lecture hall full of half-dead students cracking up that early in the morning. Professor Wilson is an excellent teacher. If you go to lecture and take good notes in class you will not have to study for the test because they are pretty straight forward. Although this class was a 7am, Jonathan Wilson made the class very entertaining. Your grade is made up of three exams, all of which are not cumulative. All of the questions on the tests are from the notes taken during class. He is a very entertaining guy. I studied a ton for his tests, they are just difficult. This guy is an awesome teacher. He is fascinating to listen to and made the course very interesting which is hard to do for history. The tests are made directly from the notes so you just have to study to pass. Also, don't be terrified if you fail the first test. I got a 68 on my first test and a 94 on the second one. Just study the notes in depth and a study guide is helpful too. His final is not cumulative so it basically ends up being 3 lectures. He doesn't give homework so all of the tests are weighted the same which means you have to do solid on all three to get a good grade in the class but it is very doable. If you need a history class, this is the one to take.

This guy is amazing. I have had incredible history teachers my entire life and this guy blows them out of the water. Sorry to all my AP teachers, but this guy puts them to shame. I despise mornings with a passion, but looked forward to this class at 7 AM twice a week. I usually wake up around 11, but I hauled myself out of bed, got myself a starbucks on the way, and enjoyed every second and note of this guy retelling us American history like it was his favorite personal story ever. Even if you hate history, take this guy, it was like an audiobook of a novel the way this guy lectured, every detail was interesting and applied to the overall class. He is also just the right amount of ironically pessimistic to make the class humorous, and he throws in some short personal funny stories to keep the class engaged. Tests are straight up note memorization, make all the notes into flashcards, memorize them, and you'll nail the tests. You are a lucky person if you get Wilson.

He is hard to contact if you do not go to his office hours as he has a lot of classes at other schools (i.e. Cuesta) so you need to talk to him after class if you want to ask a question. He did not reply to my emails. Also he is very loud and energetic in the morning which could be seen as a good or bad thing. I took this class at 7 am due to all of the good reviews. The grading for this class consists of three exams and nothing else and there is no curve to my understanding. To pass these three exams and get an A in the class I memorized all the notes given in the class, so try not to miss class. These notes should be enough and you don't need to textbook to pass the class. If you happen to miss a day of class there is a quizlet online of past students notes that you can go off of. The tests are 45 multiple choice questions and five short answers. As mentioned above, the test is pure memorization, so do spend a lot of time memorizing the notes and you will do just fine. I do recommend this professor even at the horrible 7 am hour.

Do not take this professor! He does not put any effort in to presenting the material, and uses slides from when he started teaching. He also is one of those professors that wants to trick you and tests you on details that he mentioned for a split second in class. Many History majors I know have failed his class due to this. In terms of the lecture, he is unprofessional and he lacks support towards of students opinions. He will say derogatory things like, "You Mexicans will like this!" or, "You women love these stupid things." He spends a lot of time talking about his political views, which is unprofessional but what is worse is he ridicules students who have opposing views rather than promoting a conversation. I mean he will literally call you "stupid." He also talks a lot about his money and his multiple divorces rather than teaching. Overall you won't learn much, because he does not actually know as much as people claim. He once said global warming was invented by Bernie Sanders, that Native Americans don't deserve to be called Native, and he claimed slaves consented into slavery. You will not learn anything useful, in a class that is meant to be very important. I recommend taking this class with Dr.Carver or Dr. Reid. They are easy classes, but you learn so much more.

His tests are directly from the notes that he gives you, so definitely don't waste your money on the textbook (I think I opened it once the entire quarter). If you need clarification, his office hours are helpful. Honestly after this class I researched what else he teaches because I want him as my professor for everything. I had his class at 7am across campus twice a week and never even considered blowing it off because Wilson made history fun. Also he has some golden quotes about life that are super funny: "If you want to marry someone, find something in common with them, some common ground. Take this class!! The 7 am time can be discouraging but it is totally worth it even if you are not a morning person like myself. This class completely changed my perspective on history as a whole (which I previously disliked as well). Wilson is extremely passionate about history which makes the class exciting and it’s super easy to listen and follow along. He makes even the most boring stuff interesting and I constantly found myself excited to learn more. When I read Polyratings before I took the class I was discouraged by how many people say his personality is cynical and slightly depressing, which truthfully it is, but during the class I found that the way he expresses his cynicism is hilarious and it was one of the things I liked most about him. As for the class, the entirety of your grade depends on just three tests, so if you are not a good test taker and you like having other assignments this might not be the class for you. I personally love the set up because you can study on your time and his tests are VERY to the point. He lectures, provides you with his notes that you copy down during the lecture, and then his tests are on these notes (45 mc and 5 short answer). There is no outside book information and he never has any surprises on his tests so as long as you study your notes thoroughly you should get a solid grade. The book can be helpful if you like getting more background information but I only used it one time and it was a waste of money to rent. All in all awesome class and great professor.

Wilson was a very interesting lecturer to say the least. Overall, his class was very fun and as interesting as a History class can get. One huge downside for me was the class was at 7 AM. A class this early makes it hard to take in all the information given. There is no homework or attendance in this class. It is only graded on 3 test through out the quarter. Sometimes he will talk a lot about one certain topic in his lectures and lose track of time and shoves a lot of info in a very short time. In my class he also had a lot of trouble with the tech forcing him to write on a board. But, he is a good teacher and makes depressing jokes a lot.

Professor Wilson is hilarious which makes it easier to focus in a 7am lecture and actually retain the info being presented. Also, this class requires almost no time since the tests are based solely on lecture and your grade is just three exams (he doesn't like the terms 'midterm' or 'final'). I probably spent a grand total of 6 hours on the class over the course of the entire quarter and I got an A. That being said, you need to go to every lecture or you are going to bomb the tests. Professor Wilson is something else. The class was at 7am and was pretty boring. Wilson did not care about being politically correct and periodically said things that were mildly offensive. He (a middle aged man) said to a room with many young girls in it that he was attracted to Spanish women. There were many times where I felt uncomfortable in this class. Other than that, the textbook is completely unnecessary, just study the notes. The notes he gives are organized which is nice, but they are on overhead projector sheets because this man does not realize that computers exist. Offers very little resources (no Polylearn or Canvas page so you can't check grades) and tells the class not to email him. His tests were medium difficulty and the only thing in the gradebook. I would not recommend this class at all.

He has all kinds of stories of historical people and events, and passes around books and articles that he has in his own collection to keep students interested, although much of this stuff isn't on his tests. Be careful on the essay portion of his tests, always make sure you are writing about the correct war when writing about the events that led up to that war. Take him if it is at all possible.

Professor Wilson is the greatest teacher I have ever had. Not only does he know everything that has to do with history, he has a great way of presenting it to his students. His lectures were straight to the point, easy to follow, and interesting. His test come exactly from the notes. There are no surprises. Because he presented the material well, I actually learned a lot. I made flash cards directly from the notes and studied those a couple nights before the test and got a B+. I only read one chapter the whole quarter. I fully urge you to take professor Wilson!!! I cant say that enough.

Seriously, if you do a good jod of studying the notes he gives you in class you can obtain an A or a B easily. He is such an awesome teacher. If you need any help just go into office hours. Okay, I have an admission to make I actually took Dr. Wilson at Cuesta. Passion for history is what makes all the difference. Dr. Wilson is the best instructor I have ever had in any subject. His use of overheads makes missing a point in the lecture almost impossible. Dr Wilson's sense of humor is much appreciated in a subject that is often dull when taught by less enthusiastic instructors. Does he still go over misused terms that he comes across while grading papers and exams?---hilarious!

Dr. Wilson is one of the best professors I've had so far at Cal Poly. He makes the lectures interesting by telling many stories to go along with the material he is teaching. He gave three exam none of which were accumulative. Two of the exams had essay questions and the final was all multiply choice. He suggests that you read the book but it's not necessary. If you study the notes you there is no reason to not pass the class. He is a great teacher!

I thought istory would be boring and dull, but he tells you stories and talks in such a way that keeps you glued to your seat waiting to hear what comes next. THERE ARE 2 EXAMS AND A FINAL. ALL TESTS ARE MULTIPLE CHOICE. I strongly urge you to GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. I went before the second test, and there was one other person there. Wilson, is a fantastic professor, I would recommend taking any of his classes. He lecture notes were always on the overhead in an organized way, so it was easy to copy and study from for tests. He always added interesting stories to the topics covered in the notes which made his two hour lectures fly by. His tests were easy to study for because all the questions were taken off the notes from the overhead. We never had any quizes or papers. Our grade came from the three 100 point tests we took (which included the final), of which, none were comprehensive. He made me love history, a subject that I had always despised.

Cal Poly needs more professors like Wilson. They need to put a statue or something of this man in the middle of campus for all other teachers to envy. He is EXTREMELY brilliant when it comes to history and he's an even better instructor. History was never my strong subject, but he made me (as well as many others in the class) understand and appreciate it MUCH more. His lectures and stories were hilarious as he made the entire American history into a huge story. You can clearly see that he loves what he does. Prof. Wilson has a passion for history and the amazing ability to keep a class of 130+ attentive and interested for hours. You really walk away from every class having known a little something you've never learned before. In the first class he'll tell you exactly what he expects from you. Don't even need the textbook, everything you need (notes, visuals, etc.) are presented by him on the overhead. There are 3 tests and 1 final, all multiple choice. Professor Wilson is amazing. I didn't get the greatest grade, but for me this was good in a history subject. I've never enjoyed history, always hated it and used the "when am I ever going to use this?" line. Well, he makes it fun, and simple, and I really enjoyed it. I like history because of this guy. He brings it to life and he'll toss in some really random but interesting facts. He doesn't give any e/c and the quarter grade is based only on his 3 tests. None are cumulative and they're pretty straight forward as long as you keep up and study. You don't really need the book, he gives notes that are very easy to follow. Go to class, it'll be easier to comprehend all the material, but he doesn't require you to be there, though he won't put his notes up, so find a friend or suffer the consequences. You have to take a course to fufil this GE section, take Wilson for HIST 207. It's fun, interesting, and if you never liked history before, you may now.

Mr. Wilson is the greatest HISTORY NERD I have ever taken. If you are like I was; intimidated by the subject, look no further than Jonathan Wilson. He brings to his lectures, dynamic and full-force energy. Wilson is a History genius and is able to answer any questions you may have. He intertwines wit and comedy into his presentations and is sure to make you laugh and learn. The notes Mr. Wilson shows on the overhead (or perhaps someday Power Point) cover everything on the exams, so write them down verbatum and memorize them word for word. This will ensure you success on his challenging exams. Take Mr. Wilson, you won't regret it!!!!!!

Professor Wilson is really great! He provides an outline for every lecture, making it easy to know what his key points are, yet he will lecture as if he's telling a story. --I needed this class for the USCP requirement, which I had been putting off for a long time & was dreading. I thought I was going to be pretty bored with History, but Wilson made it a really fun class. I looked forward to attending lecture. Go to class, take good notes & pay attention, and study right from the notes for the tests. This guy should be made a full time prof..... Cal Poly would really benefit.

Man, Wilson just loves to teach, and its really evident. He not only makes the material interesting, but also tries his best to get the class excited as well. Like everyone else has said: 3 tests (multiple choice) is 100% of the grade, all notes are on an overhead, and if you read the book then you're set. I didn't study really at all for the class and it hurt my grade, but if you read the history text book and memorize the key facts you're set. TAKE THIS PROF!!! =D

This teacher was simply amazing. His boundless enthusiasm for history and teaching was illustrated every day in his energetic lectures. Whether getting way too excited by a presidential biography, or relating an anecdote that nobody else cared about, he was always totally engaged. He made it interesting, funny, and hard to ignore. I didn't even buy the book, if you just attend his lectures and copy the notes on the overhead, you'll do well in the class. I STRONGLY recommend Uncle Jonathan, as he refers to himself.

my grade sucks because history is not my subject. my test scores were C, D-, B+, so I ended up with a C in the class. The second test was really hard. His tests are HARD. if you do bad on the first test, GO TALK TO HIM. he'll try to advise you. I thought i studied harder on the second test, and i definetly did worse! study EVERY single detail you can cram in your head. only three tests-- but don't let that make you think it's easy. because they are HARD. unless you happen to love history and you're really good at it. But other than hard tests, Wilson is such an awesome professor, he really knows his material, and is VERY enthusiastic. You'll understand his lectures, it's interesting, he makes it fun, it's very funny too. I liked going to class. because basically he gives you notes on overhead and you copy them and he lectures like he's telling a story. it's cool. he's great. it's just a hard class.

Wilson is hands down the best teacher at Poly. He is so into his lectures. The way he teaches is like hes telling a story, i never saw anybody sleeping and almost all 160 some odd seats were full every day. There are three midterms, no final, none of the midterms are cumlative. He bases more than 90% of the test questions on his lectures so make sure you go to class and take notes, you can buy the book but i never used it but im sure if i did i would have gotten an A, but my friend never used it and he got a 98% so its ur choice. No HW assignments, just 3 midterms and class notes that are very helpful when studying if you need to study. I hardly needed to study bc the way he teaches tattos the info in ur brain, he is also really nice and funny. Make sure you take him, even if you dont need the class

Wilson's class is based off of three tests: two midterms and a final. The tests were all multiple choice, but they were pretty hard. The tests were pretty straightforward for most of the material, but a few of the questions were very in depth or very obscure. I felt like a few of the questions on each test were unfair. The book assigned was pretty interesting to read. A fairly good amount of reading is assigned each week. You will stay for the whole two hours every class time, which kind of sucks. The lectures are pretty interesting, but long. Wilson missed the first class of the quarter and because we were behind from that, we had to take notes after we took the midterm, both times! It was ridiculous! Other than that, I liked the class and think that Wilson is a great teacher for this subject.

Let those of us who like history and who do attend faithfully enroll in Wilson's class. 207 was probably the most interesting and enjoyable class I've had at Cal Poly because Wilson presents history through cause and effect (and he does so with humor and anecdotes), rather than a chopped up series of facts. This man is, quite honestly, the most amazing Professor I have had at Poly. You don't have this high of a Polyrating with over 100+ evaluations if this weren't so. His class is always a blast and he is very easy to approach. There seems to be a professor in every department who has the presentation ability and knowledge to be tenured, but sadly isn't and Wilson is this man. Everyone should take him while they still can at Poly... you never know when his contract may be expiring. History isn't my major and this was just a General Ed class. However, so far it is one of the most interesting classes I've taken at Cal Poly. Professor Wilson actually cares if you learn the material and presents it in a very interesting way. During every lecture you can tell that he cares about and loves the subject because of his enthusiasm, which helped me stay awake through the lectures, making it different from every other history class I have taken. The class consists of lectures and three tests throughout the quarter. There is no homework except for reading from the book and reviewing notes. The notes are very helpful and contain info not in the book, so go to all lectures. The only downside is that the three tests make up your entire grade and he doesn't curve. The upside is that the tests are very fair. If you get a chance to take this class, I highly recommend taking it with Professor Wilson.

If you are looking at this taking this course to fill you GE, do it. You show up to class, copy his notes and listen to him talk. You dont have to read the book at all, buying it is a waste of money. EVERYTHING you get tested on is on the notes (which he hand writes and goes through point by point on an overhead projector) and you ONLY get tested on what he has written down, nothing he says he will test you on. There are 2 midterms and a final, none of which are cumulative. You can take the test then throw your notes away. Wilson is hilarious and loves the subject and material, though you dont have to listen to what he says its very interesting and he keeps class entertaining and you will actually learn and enjoy it since you wont be worried about it being difficult. I've never enjoyed a note-taking class so much in my life. Yeah, it was at 7 am, yeah there were a lot of notes (full 2 hours usually every time), and he was one of the most disorganized professors I've seen. But he still was great at getting the information across, and I've become a lot more passionate about history because of him. He's like a walking encyclopedia. He could probably tell you the population of every state of every census in US history, as well as the exact electoral vote of every election, and basically knows more about our history than you could probably find on the internet. He also is very funny, whether he's talking about Brett Favre, how bad Atascadero is, or usually his self-deprecating humor. Take him, even at 7 am. Jonathan Wilson is a good choice if you need to fulfill a GE requirement. I think its funny that he bashed Polyratings as being a forum for libel when all the comments I've read about him are positive, but then again he likes to bash himself. Wilson is a charismatic lecturer (which you need at 7am) who can often be cynical (which any good historian should be) and often adds his own opinions with a disclaimer. Too many history teachers love to talk about history as fact and include their own bias without ever acknowledging other theories. Not Wilson, he has knowledge of most events and theories, and is humble enough to admit when he doesn't know. 207 is a large lecture class so it is hard to ask questions or have much interaction but he will do his best. You don't need the book so save your money and say "Screw You" to the publishers.

The course is comprised of three tests in which your grade is completely based on. The first test is based on the lecture notes up until that point. (You need to memorize the lecture notes, just make every letter roman numeral a note card or something.) Now that material is done, for the next you only need to know the lecture notes from after the first test up until then. The third test is the same format. He makes a typically very boring history class extremely informative and entertaining. He is different than most professors in that he doesn't follow the typical college professor stereotype. There are only 3 exams that are entered in the grade book and if you show up to lecture then you can do well.

The only teacher that can keep students from falling asleep in a history class at 7AM. I thought he was really funny, and I would absolutely take another history class of his. His exams were really straight forward and almost all the questions were right from his lecture. Go to his lectures, take the notes he gives you, study those notes and you'll pass the class no problem.

PLEASE TAKE JONATHAN WILSON. I took him for HIST 201 and LS 211, and he's the best professor I've ever had. I literally had him for a 7 AM for history and I never missed class because he actually made me want to go. He really wants every student to do well and understand the material. His class is pretty easy too as all he does is lecture and your grade is composed of three midterms, all of which are essentially the information from your notes. His lectures are actually interesting and he lets students give their input allllll the time during class. Take Wilson for every class if you can because he is actually the best.

This class is incredibly easy. He lectures the entire class, but you just have to copy his overheads and listen to his (usually) entertaining and interesting tangents. 2 midterms (MC, short answer, 1 essay); 1 final (MC). Tests are fairly straightforward and as long as you basically restate his notes in them, you'll get an A. Don't buy the book- you can read it all in 2 or 3 sittings throughout the quarter and you don't need it to take the tests.

I took Wilson last year for LS 214 and I absolutely loved him. He's a very realistic (often pessimistic) guy but he sure knows how to keep his class engaged. He's funny, entertaining, and presents his information very clearly. My grade was based solely on 3 tests, and the tests were an exact replica of my notes. The only word of advice for people taking his class is that he does like to catch you on the little things like places and dates on the multiple choice tests. KNOW YOUR NOTES BACKWARDS AND FORWARDS. The first two tests were multiple choice and short essays, and the final test was just multiple choice. For the shor essays, all i can say is word vomit. Spit as much information as you can onto a page, he loves it. Overall, I loved this class and have been looking for an excuse to take Wilson again.

He is simply the BEST teacher I've ever had. If more teachers presented their lectures this clearly and enthusiastically, school would be so much more interesting and fun. His tests are very reasonable - 2 midterms (consisting of an essay question, some multiple choice, and some short answers) and a final that is not cumulative (consisting of only multiple choice questions). History is one of those classes I usually forget about soon as the test is over, but I actually remember so much from this class. That is because he does a great job of connecting historical periods with present time to make things relevant to us or to show cause and effect. It was a two hour lecture class but time went by really fast. Very personable and knowledgeable teacher that is a great addition to the LS department!

I have never seen a professor more excited about their subject than Wilson. He knows all his material like the back of his hand, and presents it to you as if he knows something absolutely amazing and wants to let you in on it. He puts everything you need to know straight onto an overhead, so you always know exactly what to write down. The tests come straight from the overheads, so there aren't any trick questions as you study. The overhead dnotes are handwritten by himself which must have taken him days. And it's funny because he always apologizes sincerely if there is a typo, even though of course nobody minds. You don't need to get the book. He doesn't test you on anything in it. And the nice thing is, if you have to miss class, you can just get the notes from someone else and it's not really a big deal. But I recommend going because it sticks a lot better when you hear it from him, because he conveys it so enthusiastically. I highly recommend this professor!

I absolutely LOVED Wilson!!! He is seriously the funniest and most blunt teacher ever. Everyone should take him if you have the option. For this course though it's somewhat challenging. You definitely need to go to every class and study your ass off, but he makes class enjoyable! Don't worry... he is way cool!

Mr. Wilson is one of the only history teachers that has made history interesting. He is a very likable character, which helps him keep your attention. He loves history, but is not afraid to admit his faults. If you simply pay attention, and go to every class, you will pass. The tests weren't bad either. Multiple choice is so easy. The only part to worry about is the essay and short answer. STUDY your notes! (make sure you write down everything even though it's tedious.) He even gives a lot of clues for the tests.

Pretty good class. Very interesting; but the only things that count toward your overall grade are 3 tests and 1 very small paper. Therefore, if you don't do very good on one test, it is difficult to pull up the grade. He does present the information in a good way. Very nice teacher.

Professor Wilson's passion for his subject is contagious. Take his class and see for yourself. Three exams, not cumulative 100 points each. Show up to each class, take notes from the overhead, and you'll do fine. Study your notes THOROUGHLY and you're likely to earn an "A" like I did. He permits you to tape his lectures. This is an excellent study tool. In addition to the three exams, there is one paper worth 25 points. Word of advice--don't procrastinate on it! Get it done early and Professor Wilson will get it back to you promptly. I wish that all Cal Poly professors had Professor Wilson's enthusiasm and passion for their subjects. Take him, you'll be glad that you did!

Professor Wilson is so great. He is funny, and a good lecturer. My only complaint is he is super conservative and doesn\'t believe in global warming so to me he came off as a bit of a nut job. But besides the fact he is a little strange does not interfere with his teaching ability. His tests come straight from the notes you take in the class so as long as you copy down the notes and look them over there is no reason you should not get a good grade. Some of his multiple choice questions are tricky but not unfair. If possible take Wilson.

I am currently taking LS 214 with Wilson even though I am not an LS major. I thought I\'d write this in case there is anyone in the situation I was in last quarter where I was at the end of registration rotations and I needed to find an open class in order to have enough units. Like any history class, LS 214 has the potential to be a boring class, however the way Wilson presents the material makes it truly interesting. And it\'s not just about the history of education either. I feel like I\'ve learned more history in general from this class than from many other history classes I have taken. Wilson is very energetic, even though he claims to sometimes come to class on two hours of sleep. The class is very straight forward: just write down all the notes he puts on the overhead, go over them several times, or until you feel confident about the material, before the test. The tests are literally taken right from these notes. I would definitely recommend this class, even for people like myself who are not LS majors, because you really do learn so much and Wilson is a great teacher who truly seems to care about his students.

When I re-read the notes at home I wonder how i ever found the material amusing in class. He's extremely enthusiastic and relates the material to the students so that the most boring class in the world is actually entertaining. That takes skill. He's cynical and sarcastic about everything which makes the class even more entertaining. Just study the notes super well and the tests are a breeze.

I'm not an LS major, but I had a late registration and needed some elective units so I decided to take it. It wasn't bad. The only thing that bothered me was how the class was literally 99% female. Wilson is a good teacher though. He makes the material interesting and I felt like for once I'd actually remember something I learned in a history class (and I did). Just copy the notes and either retype them repeatedly or read them over and over till you've basically got them memorized in order to study for the tests. There's no homework and as long as you go to class you don't even need to read the book. Also, the class counts towards a law and society minor if you're like me and thinking about doing that.

Wilson is a very brilliant man and I liked him as a professor! He is extremely funny and very very bright. He loves history and it really shows. He has trouble with his hearing so he yells sometimes and it's quite funny! Great guy that will help you if you have questions. The class is not too bad either, mostly memorizing. The tests are 99% from the notes, so you have to memorize the notes like crazy and you will be fine on the test, but do not underestimate the tests: they are VERY detailed and you have to be VERY detailed in your essays and short answers as well. Your grade is made up of only 3 tests, so you can't blow any of them. Liked him, good class!

Mr. Wilson was an amazing teacher! LS 214 can be an extremely boring subject certain days, especially if you have to take it at 8 in the morning like I had to. Fortunately, Mr. Wilson does everything he can to keep you entertained and awake. It's clear he is very passionate about history! For this class specifically, there were three tests, all worth the same amount and he gives you all of the notes. He's nice enough to give you exactly what will be on the test, so it's your job to make sure you memorize everything in the notes for the tests. The tests are multiple choice, short answer, and essay. The third test, the final, is all multiple choice. Overall, he is a fair grader and passionate teacher. Take him!!!!!

I loved Wilson! He is incredibly knowledgable, and presents his lectures well. His tests are not too bad if you study for them and know the material exactly how he lectures it. It is difficult because the grade in the class is only based off of the 3 tests. For me this was a problem because I did fairly bad on my first test but well on my other two. So unfortunately I could have had a high B, low A. But with one bad test grade it messed me up. So I recommend really working hard on all three tests! He is cynical, it is funny and I do appreciate him as a teacher. Towards the end of the quarter it gets to be a bit much though when he is constantly talking about how bad marriage is, how much life sucks, etc. However you'll be used to it by then to care. Have fun with Wilson, he's great and full of energy!

Professor Wilson is a great lecturer with a booming voice, and his vast amounts of knowledge demonstrates that Mr. Wilson knows what he is talking about. The Constitutional Issues in the History of United States and California Education class was straightforward with note-taking lectures and the tests were solely based on the notes. If you are thinking about taking a class with dear old Jonathan, here are some of his best quotes to get to know him on a personal level before your first day of class: "D stands for demonic drugged out dog" "Back when you were a kid when you were actually happy" "Text and drive students who cares, I'm going to do it right now" "I'm going to be gone soon… but I love Wendys" I've never had a happy birthday in my life Why would I lie to you I havent even lied to my exwife yet1?! San Liberal Obispo I hate this town this is a meth lab "Central Coast Sucks!!" "Burn this room already" "Hate your life now you will eventually hate it" "Kids already having sex at 12 and walking around with their iphones at 3…what is this world coming to?" "Kids cant play wall ball at school…this is just terrible" "I dont sleep I just google stuff" "I know none of you want to be here" "I'm going to shoot the woodpeckers at my house" "My doctor didnt call me fat and I was offended…I am fat" If you want to be entertained in class, this is the guy for you. You can clearly see Professor Wilson's passion and enthusiasm for what he teaches and teaching itself. This class is a 2 hour lecture class and the grade is based on 2 exams and a final. His lectures are clear and easy to follow and he will slow down or wait if you need to catch up writing. He makes history more interesting by consistently connecting historical events to issues that are relevant today. He also makes the class more interesting by combining history with some political science and sociology, so you are understanding what was going on and why as opposed to just knowing this thing happened. The 2 exams are 20 multiple choice, 5 short answer (and by short answer, he will take bullets and incomplete sentences, but make sure you are still thorough or you will get marked down) and an essay. The final is multiple choice only. If you know the notes well (I found typing them up the day after class helped and rereading them whenever I did this) then you will be okay on the tests. I would definitely recommend Wilson!

if you like sushi, soccer, ucsb, marriage, the central coast, drugs, Common Core, iPhones, and plan on voting for Bernie Sanders, you've come to the right place! Not only does John despise all of those things, but he expresses his disapproval in the most hilarious ways possible. i never missed a class because hearing his opinions were so entertaining. In all seriousness though, I like him as a professor because he isn't sensitive towards college students. he cares deeply about education and the guy is honestly a wizard when it comes to history, like i have no idea how he knows all the specific details of everything. he knows that college is a place where students don't have to be coddled, he exposes us to viewpoints that are different from ours, and i appreciate this because i feel like we can't be sheltered from the reality of life forever. some of my most favorite quotations by this man include the following: "death is a great thing. no taxes." "what is this coachella?" "the only thing going on in my neighborhood is those meth addicts barbecuing squirrels." "some crack addict stole my telescope." "its hotter than a crematorium in here." He's a very genuine person who clearly cares about the content he's teaching but he definitely goes on way too many tangents during lecture about his own stories. He also inserts his own opinion into class a lot and sometimes it's not clear where the line between class content and his opinions are. He also lets his pre-conceived notions about students get in the way of how he conducts class sometimes. Also, your entire grade is based on two exams and a final, with 1/3 of your grade for each. It's pretty stressful and the entire class is based on rote memorization. He's super hypocritical since he claims to emphasize critical thinking and then purely bases our grade on memorizing things. Very engaging during lecture since he cares so much about the class but he really lets his worldviews get in the way of truly teaching effectively

Wilson was an awesome lecturer, his class was really structured and easy to keep up with. He has the same notes every year and puts them up for you to copy down exactly and the tests are based off of those exactly. I figured the best way to study for the tests is to read your notes, type them up and get to memorizing them because the tests follow them word for word. There are three tests the whole quarter and nothing else, which means each test is pretty heavy on your grade. They have multiple choice, a short answer and an essay (the essay being worth 50%). It was really a great class and not too difficult at all.
