Never take this professor. She is one of the absolute worst teachers I have ever had. She doesn't teach well at all and when you do your required marketing plan your group will probably spend about 50 hours total on it! No Joke!

Swartz should not be allowed to teach, which in fact she does not do anyway. She uses a software program that she is not familiar with whatsoever, so you basically have to go through the quarter blind working on a marketing plan which takes hours and hours and you learn nothing by doing it since you make everything up to fit into the plan. There is no midterm, but "daily quizzes" which turned into 1 every two weeks. So most of your grade rides on the group marketing plan. This is difficult since she refuses to explain what she wants in the project until after the due date. I dreaded going to class not only because it was boring and pointless but also because her voice was so irritating, shrill and piercing that class became painful. My advice is DO NOT TAKE MAD DOG. Marketing should be a fun class, but Swartz sees to it that its not.

Perhaps the earlier-dated comments convinced Dr. Swartz to do a complete 180 turnaround for Fall 2001 or the criticizers have some hidden vendetta against her, but nevertheless, she was a completely different professor from the one portrayed below. She cared about marketing and the students. The group marketing proposal, which ultimately makes up about half of the students' grade, was the most rewarding assignment I've completed at Poly to date. Then again, I'm a marketing major. Solo assignments are scarce, unlike the almost daily, yet straightforward, quizzes. You'll come out of this class knowing bits and pieces of marketing basics, but more importantly, how marketing relates and interacts with the rest of the business world. Swartz manages to keep her lectures fairly informative while warding off dull slumps in the material with activities. Best advice: Choose your team members wisely; your grade depends on them and vice-versa.

Honestly, I took her class with all of the people at the bottom of the page here in Spring of 2001 and she is not that bad. By no means is she a good professor, but she is not a teacher I would avoid by any means. She has this strict policy of turning in assignments promptly on time at the beginning of class or you get no credit, which in those peoples cases, probably killed their grade. Its a stupid rule, but you know it exists and you know she wont budge from it. I had to sprint to class once to turn in part of the marketing plan that she so dearly continues to familiarize herself with. I think her head is kinda aloof, but just be a normal student and do the work, or at least most of it, and I guarantee you will get a B. Daily quizzes aren't really that tough and the plan is time consuming, but fun. Don't avoid her, but don't get too exicted. Besides...she is one of the better teachers for this course, if that says anyhting.

This teacher sucks. I'll tell you why. She is ... uncompassionate [and] hard-headed. Listen. She makes girls cry in front of the whole class for turing in a project 3 min. late; she doesn't have an ounce of understanting or a cent of caring. She was not teaching for the benefit of the students, she was there to screw the students that were late with their assignments or misunderstood the details of the marketing project. The student use a program to guide them through marketing plans because Swartz doesn't guide the students at all. She is not clever, not imaginative, nor does she make the class stimulating. Plus, when I had a question about my grades, she avoided me, and said maybe we can talk at the end of the summer ( this was in May). ...

Terri Swartz is the biggest cunt. I cannot believe she is a professor and the Interim College Dean. Swartz does not have the ability to fill these roles. She doesnot take the initiative to teach the students. It is useless to even show up to the lectures because the information she teaches is so contradictory to the text. Swartz seems to be on a power trip. She feasts on the breakdown of student's morale. She is terrible in her office hours too. There are many more qualified figures who can fill the role as College Dean. Swartz is a digrace to the College of Business and should be removed.

Terri Swartx does not care about the students... and i doubt that she ever has. You can tell that she only pretends to teach to scam more money out of the college, and eventually from the students. During class she isn't helpful, doesn't try to explain anything, she just talks like she is the smartest person in the world. Boo on the college for letting her ruin the classes that we PAY to take!

She is ridiculously disorganized and has no lesson plans. She comes to class and discusses a few slides for the entire class period. She doesn't actually teach shit and gets her tests from the publisher of the book. She is clearly in it for the money and tries to do the least amount of work possible to get a pay check. Obviously Dr. Swartz is lazy and this comes out to the class very clearly. She is also lesbian.

I took this class as a 5 week summer course, and it wasn't that bad. I don't know why everyone says Prof. Swartz is such a bad teacher, you've really got to be a retard not to pass this class. I mean, most of it's group work, so even minimal effort will get you a C. She's actually a pretty good lecturer, she always seems prepared, and she isn't monotone, plus she even brings in props sometimes to make lectures less generic. She's a little anal, granted, but nothing extreme. Most old people are a little bit picky. She really cares about her students learning something, and she frequently polls the class to see what she can adjust in her class to tailor it more to her students needs and workloads. There's a marketing plan group project/presentation and a midterm and final which are MC and easy points. Take it with Swartz, it's not a bad choice, disregard all the people who call her a bitch.

Awww crap. Terri is attemping to teach again!? I had her for 346 and now she is in charge of 452. She was awful in 346, she doesn't know whats going on, and she polls the class so she can see how bad she is doing. Then she changes so she doesn't have to do as much work, but we do. I really did not enjoy this person as a teacher. The thing about her reading slides, its true. She does give bogus grades too. If there is someone else, take them instead, even if its at 7am. Yea shes that bad.

Swartz was not bad at all. The past remarks here did no justice for how she actually was as a teacher. The class was pretty easy work-wise, she was nice and she was a fair grader. Make sure you present your projects the way she wants you to, addressing the right audience. If you get in a good group you'll do fine. The quizes are easy. The journal's are easy. The video for the first presentation is the hardest part of the class. I recommend this professor.

This lady has no business teaching! Her classes are boring and she barely covers the material. She also is very rude to students and always leaves early becasue of meetings she has. She was not very familiar with the material and can barely do the computer excercises. The sad part about her is that she is the Dean. She brings nothing to this campus and needs to move on to managing a trailer park.

I thought Swartz was an excellent teacher. I enjoyed Services Marketing. It was alot of work but I thought it was kinda fun, especially the Servicescape project in which we had to present a video. The quizzes were really easy as long as you paid attention to the lectures. We had to do "In the News," in which everyone had to be prepared to discuss an article from the Wall Street Journal. Throughout the quarter I only got called once, but I have to admit that it was interesting to listen to what the other students' articles were about. I never use to read the Wall Street Journal, but now I find it interesting. Overall, I thought Swartz was a very fair grader and I would definitely recommend her to others.

DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!! No matter how much effort you put in this class, you will never get an A. So if you want good grades do not take her. The workload for this class is ridiculous and assignments are very unclear and ambiguous. If you think you are doing something somewhat on the right track. Think again! I never had her before and figured since this was the very first section of this class due to the new ciriculum she would be lenient, but she is not. It will probably be even worse for future students. I will never take her again.

Anyone who says Swartz is a good teacher is an idiot. Obviously they must be into bull dike bitches like Swartz. This teacher has no problem failing the whole class. She even takes pleasure in it. I swear. There isn't an ounce of understanding or heart in this wretched woman. I don't know if she is bitter about something from her past or if she was just born a straight up cunt bitch. I took the class with people who had to take it over because they turned in a project a minute late. Understand that when she says no late work..she fucking means it. This policy is ridiculous. Kids work their asses off and walk into class a minute late and all their hard work turns to shit when she tells them they are getting a 0 on it. Whoever it is in the business school that lets this pig bitch even near students needs to get their head checked. All in all I would have to rate her pretty low as a teacher. And a person. She's a frustrating teacher, that's for sure. The class is set up to make you feel like an idiot. It's hard to get an A in the class, but a B is not hard at all. I thought I was failing, and I infact had a B, so don't stress if you're not doing well. The case analysis' are difficult but there are other projects towards the end that are simpler. I'm not sure if she's lesbian or not, but I don't think that really matters. If you get stuck with her, don't stress out about it, just relax, everything is going to be okay, as long as you aren't completely dumb and do the work.

I'm not here to bash Swartz, just to state the facts and I have to agree with all of the other horrible ratings she has received on here. She is probably one of the worst teachers I've had at Cal Poly and I don't understand how such an accredited Business program like ours has a professor like this. The class consists of about 3 individual case studies and 3 group case studies (she assigns the groups), one of which is for a final presentation only in front of her. She doesn't teach anything or go over the cases before she assigns them and expects you to know every concept from previous classes, even if they were never concepts learned in the prerequisites. She will only go over the cases after you turn them in but instead of teaching the ideas and concepts about how to approach and solve a related case, she just rips you apart. Her form of teaching is asking the class questions that are just about equivalent to, "Are you stupid?" After 10 weeks and many wasted hours of my life, I have learned absolutely nothing from her related to Marketing. She is extremely degrading and talks down to the class. I think she thinks she is God and she expects to be treated that way. I entered every class session with apprehension and left every class session feeling inadequate (she does take role). If there was anyone else that taught this course there would've been no question about withdrawing. She has been the most discouraging person I've ever encountered. There were times when I even considered changing my major because of the way she made me feel about myself and my intelligence, and marketing isn't even a very tough major. For those of you that are required to take her, I suggest taking her with a light load because the cases are very time demanding, but then again, no matter how much effort you put into it you will still feel like a failure. Also, the only thing I can think of in order to do better is to kiss her ass. If you have to, suck it up and make her feel like the God she thinks she is...it's only one quarter... and then someone please come back to a higher position in the marketing department and fire her ass. I sure everyone would thank you.

Of you have to take Terri...oh wait she won't let you call her by her first name, PROFESSOR SWARTZ, I am sorry. She is the most unhelpful teacher I have ever had. I have never gotten below a B in any class in my life, and I got a C+ in her course. The grading is completely subjective, if she doesn't like you, if you dont flirt with her, suck up to her, go to her office hours all the time forget getting anything above a C. The only reccomendation I can give is to not take her. If you have to take her, know that you life will be a living hell for a quarter, try and find someone who you can suffer it through with, and SUCK UP TO HER ROYALLY. I hate her and I let her know I did not like her and therefore recieved my wonderful grade. Unless you can read her mind, you will never get the projects the way she wants them, then after you already spent days getting the "wrong" answer she will actually she you what she wanted you to do and is very surprised you couldn't get the right answer. Bottom line she is a know-it-all, overbearing woman, who really shouldnt be teaching because she doesnt care if her students learn, she betlittles us and doesnt listen to our concerns. I hope you are reading this TERRI and I hope you can start to re-evaluate why you are teaching because you are not helping anyone, just making college a hell of a lot less enjoyable. THANKS

Although Swartz's class makes you feel like hell the entire quarter as you constantly can't help but think that you MUST be failing, you do learn a lot from the class. There are several approaches to solving cases that she goes over which I have found myself applying several times in classes after BUS 452. However, she does leave you completely in the dark about how to solve cases and makes you feel like a complete dumbass when she goes over the case after it is turned in. Overall, there are several flaws in the way she teaches the class but you do learn a ton and most of the evaluations below are just from people that couldnt sack the fuck up and accept a challenge. College courses are suppose to challenge you and push you to the limits, not for you to be spoonfed the material and get an A with no effort.

The office of dear Kaiser Swartz is filled with books about TQM, lean management, and even some marketing. I assume she has read some of them, or at least perused their tables of contents. Still, ol' Swartzy relies not on the books she requires you to purchase, but rather on a simulation that others have accurately described as "less than dynamic." Be warned, your grade in this course depends primarily on your success in this simulation. Basically, the formula is win the simulation, get an A. Swartzy will tell you over and over again that effort means nothing in her class, or in the real world. All she cares about are results. The problem is, she doesn't teach! Even on our last day of class, or Final Debriefing, she would not tell the class how to do certain things with the simulation that could have led to success. What were we going to do? How about some constructive discussion? Swatzman is all about letting you know that you ain't sh!*, you ain't never gonna be sh!*, and on and on ad infinitum. It's as if she possesses some intellectual (psuedo-intellectual) capital that she is unwilling to bestow on mere MBA candidates. We're grad students!! Prepare us for this "real world" where only results matter by giving us the tools to succeed. Swartzkoff will do many things to try to break your will, tarnish your self-esteem, and cause you to re-evaluate your reasons for getting an MBA. My only question is why such an unhelpful, arrogant person would ever enter the teaching profession. Perhaps she failed miserably in the 'real world where no one cares how hard you work, they just care about reults." And since has found comfort in the revered stucco towers of the Orfalea College of . . .oh Swatzhole, how I will never miss thee.

Okay, so people don't like her, but you have to take this class if you're getting an MBA, so here's what to do: 1. Be there, and on time! If you don't go the first day, she WILL drop you, study plan or no study plan. Don't show up late either. You do not want to stand out in any way other than a positive one with this teacher. If you don't like her, you probably realized already you're not alone, but just shut up and blend in. If you do like her, well then try and get her to like you too cause that can only help. 2. Be prepared. Sometimes she'll make recommendations. They are NOT recommendations, they are orders, and she'll most likely give you a quiz on it. She says read the newspaper, read it. She says watch the super bowl, watch it. She says ask a question, ask one. 3. Learn the simulation and learn it fast! What you do in the beginning will affect you throughout the quarter, so read the entire instructions before you start. Those who learn fastest do the best on this, and you cannot expect her to teach it to you. Even when she says she'll help you with it, she just tells you what the instructions already say, but sometimes too late. You are going to spend way too much of your life on this with no guarantee you'll do well, so try to get along with your group. Just do what the game wants you to do once you can figure out exactly what that is. Then pray. 4. The textbook mainly serves as a means to figure out what phrases and words to drop in your presentation/papers. You can probably get away with just paying attention to the lectures, but sometimes she skips through them real fast so you may actually have to review them online when she posts them. It is supposed to teach you marketing concepts to use on the simulation, so maybe you should just skim it all before the simulation starts, but she never directly tested us on what the text says. Good luck!

I walked into the class with no prior marketing experience, so it was all fairly new to me. The class centered around this marketing simulation in which teams were assigned. My biggest beef with the class is that it seemed that we were learning new skills for the simulation as the class progressed. While we could then use the new knowledge in future decisions, I think it would have been nice to understand or most of the marketing tools before the decisions began. The CEO briefing is an interesting experience. She will try to find holes in your firm's logic. You really will feel like you're in the real situation. The tension, "oops feelings", wondering when the questioning will end, etc are all present. It was a humbling experience. Think of it as an intense office hour or so. She'll give you a few ideas to possibly use. Having a lot of extra graphs and data ready in the presentation should help in the grade for that assignment. In the beginning of the class, she does come off pretty harsh. But, she is just setting the stage for a no BS environment. She does lighten up. Outside the classroom, she is very nice. She runs her class like a real job. No BS, be on time and respectful. The overall grading does seem a little funny. There are very few individual assignments, and they have little impact on your grade (according to the syllabus). One would imagine that those in the same group should recieve the same or very similar grades. It was explained that the final grades would vary in the groups because of the peer evals that we submit periodically. All I know is that in some groups, some members got Cs and others got Bs. Looking back, I'm not sure how much of a relationship there was between the firm's performance and the grade in the class. My firm didn't do well at all, but I still got the grade that I got - lower grades were given. Make sure you are on good terms with her, really try to win or succeed in the simulation. Make a strong effort to avoid putting off the mid and final reports to the last minute...cutting the report lengths down to the allowed amounts was tricky. Good luck and make the best of the class.

Unfortunately for MBA students, this is a required course - and a required waste of time. As our former interim dean, Terri Swartz is afforded a great deal of lattitude in structuring the class. However, instead of using this to our benefit, she uses it to hers. By centering the entire course around a single, less-than-dynamic simulation, she has found a way to keep students busy without having to exert any of her own effort outside of the classroom. This is pure laziness. As other professors such as Mike Geringer will tell you, simulations are meant to be used as tools for learning, not for examination purposes. In this class, your final grade is completely based on the simulation. According to Dr. Swartz, if you're not performing well in the simulation, you're not learning the concepts. The only problem with this philosophy is that the victors in both universes of the simulation were the teams that got out to early leads, before we had hardly cracked the textbook. Therefore, the best advice for this class is to forgo buying the textbook, study all of the characteristics of the simulation before beginning and get out to an early lead in the simulation because your grade for the course depends on it.

Dr. Swartz is difficult but this wasn't the worst class I've had. I was only upset when grades came out; they were almost completely random. Working harder didn't seem to matter, and even if your group said you were a complete slacker and did no work you could still get an A. Side note: I don't think Swartz's sexual orientation matters. It's not OK to call people names that make fun of their sexual orientation or gender, just as it's not OK to make fun of someone's ethnicity.
