Dr. Sheik is a very dry lecturer with a subtle sense of humor. He makes very little attempt to keep the class awake, because he teaches right out of the book, with few digressions. the classes aren't hard except that liguistics is hard. There is some homework, and it ain't fun, but he's extremely willing to help you in office hours or not collect a particularly confusing assignment. Gives great study guides for 390. The only problem is that it's hard to stay awake.

if you are going to take a linguistics class with dr. sheik be prepared to be bored out of your gord! his teaching style: lectures straight from the book testing: about every two weeks/ 5 pgs of short answer questions and terms/ quizzes: once a week only regurgitated answers and examples from the text will get you a good grade---good luck!! also...there is a lot of information packed into the chapters and dr sheik does not give a study guide so focus mainly on the material he bores you to death with in class.

This is by far the most boring and uninformative class I have taken in four years at Poly. Linguistics is not an interesting course in the least, but Dr. Sheik does everything in his power to make it as boring as possible. The lecture is straight from the book every single day for two excruciating hours sans two equally boring videos the entire quarter. Sheik never offers any additional info not in the book and he takes role twice a day so there is no choice but to attend this torture. I have never sat in a class where there were at least a dozen uncomfortable silences each day. Don't take this class, please, for the love of God, don't.

This guy is so freakin boring it's unbelievable. He takes roll everyday twice-at the beginning of class and after a ten minute break. If you miss more than two classes he lowers your final grade by one letter grade. He reads out of the book almost the entire time. When you ask a question he gives you an answer about something else. The tests suck because you don't have any idea what they're going to be like-you ask and he won't tell. The first test was entirely defintion fill in the blank and give an example. After that they had some definition with giving examples. The class was passable but a big pain in the ass. I do give the guy bonus points for being a nice cute little old man though. Oh ya, bring a hearing aid to class, the guy has a softer voice than I do.

He's not a bad professor in the sense that he doesn't know what he's talking about. He's just really, really, really, boring.

Personally, I didn't find this class interesting at all. I don't think Dr. Sheik even tried to make it interesting. Basically, all he does is open the textbook, puts it on the podium and recites stuff from the text. You simply regurgitate whatever's in the text. Memorize lots of definitions and examples for the tests and quizzes. He gives you a 1 question reading quiz almost every time you meet. You watch old linguistic movies. None of the movies were made after the 80s. He has a monotone type of voice and likes to pace, which can make you sleepy. Most of the test material came directly from the text. Some of the tests have movie questions. When you have to go over exercises, it takes forever because he goes up and down the rows. I didn't think that was very efficient. I thought the class was pretty painful to sit through especially for 2 hours. We would have to correct him sometimes. I don't think he really listens to people's answers when we went over the exercises. If you have to take this class, I guess its okay. You can survive for a quarter.

OH MY GOSH! I have wasted 2.5 hours a day, three days a week for ten weeks being absolutly bored and fustrated! this guy is insane! first, you have to show up to class cuz he takes roll every day, twice a day and if you miss 3 days, your grade goes down 10% there are ramndom quizes in which you have to basically memorize every defintion for each chapter in order to get credit. there are tests every two weeks in which he tests your memorization skills rather than knowledge of the material. he makes you feel like a complete imbisile if you ask a clarifying question. he reads the chapter to us and calls it lecture, even if the chapter is only 3 pages, he will keep talking about it for two hours! what a waste of my time!

One of only two bad experiences I had at Cal Poly 13 years ago. I was looking forward to taking a class on grammar (yeah, I was weird that way) and Sheik's class put me to sleep and made me not like my own mother tongue any more. Sheik's heart is in the right place, I'm sure, but his delivery and class structure leave so much to be desired. To take bright, eager and hopeful students and turn them into bleary eyed zombies is inexcusable. Please, Mr. Sheik, retire.

read the book and highlight stuff. then read the highlighted stuff right before you go to class, and you will do really well on the quizzes. the midterms are just like the quizes, except with more questions. the final is basicly the two midterms put together, with a few additional questions.
