This is a lame site. The comments are statistically insignificant. Most comments lack basic grammar and spelling skills.

bottom line, take another professor for SCOM 101. this guy is beyond archaic in age and makes the lamest comments after each speech is given that intends to be a pun on what the topic of what the speech was about. i can't even give an example; trust me, it's BAD! he never explained exactly what was expected of you for each of your 4 speeches. his only help was saying "read the chapter in the book" which didn't help either. oh, and the book is like $60 and loose leaf, so you can't even sell it back. he also gives 2 tests on the chapters in the book and a "final" just to mkae sure you're reading (which is unnecessary, really) i would not recommend taking him for speech 101.

This class is a joke. The three tests we took over the quarter we on material he didn't even go over in class, and they ended up being worth almost as much as the speeches. It seems all the BS work like outlines, ingle page papers, and tests on irrelevant material out of the book, are worth way more than the actual speeches. It is possible to get a B on every speech and still get a C in the class. That is wrong.

Dr. Sharp assigned 5 speeches for the class in the order, an introduction speech about another classmate (25points), a speech about one of the research tools at the liberary (75pts), an informative speech (100pts), a presuasive speech (100pts), and an impromptu speech (25pts). There were also two quizzes (25each) and a final (100pts). The last 25 pts from an outline for the informative speech makes up the total of 500 pts for the class. There wasn't only about 4-5 lectures for the whole quarter. The tests are all from the reading and the final include the WHOLE book. Just make sure you read before the tests, you'll be fine. Also, the final is NOT given during finals week, instead it was given around 6-7th week. It's great since i had 5 classes and this spare me one final the last week, but bad because i needed to finish the book so much earlier. The second speeches was kinda a waste of time, someone talked about the dictionary (the 30 volumes kind) for that... The impromtu was done during the final exam time, in which you pick a piece of paper with 3 topics on it and you get to pick one topic right away, then leave the room for 3 minutes and come back to give the speech. The other speeches you can pick a topic or focus as you please. As with any speech class, the majority of class time is devoted to people giving speeches. When you are not giving a speech, you may need to evaluate other ppl speeches. you can miss class two time w/o affecting your grade, every extra day is a -5 pts to your grade. On the other hand, if you miss only one class, you get +5 and miss none, you get +10 pt. That's all the mechanics for the class. As for the teacher, Dr shape is funny in class and very availible and helpful in office hours. His grading is fair enough, given the subjectivity of the class, since it seeems he doesn't just give you a grade base on how he like your speeches, but he also look at the other students evalutations. The tests are mostly right from the book, straight forward questions. Though he does throw in a few pecular question to limit the A's. my opinion about the helpfulness of the class is that it doesn't really give you much more than what you have. The whole thing about speech (and the grade) depends on how you are with the skill. The book gives you some pointers, and the teacher can help you a little, but it's the practice that matters. So i don't think the class helped me much with my ability to give speeches, only in forcing me to practice the skill. Last word: It's a GE, just get it over with; pick Dr. Sharp if you want a funny prof in class and to have one less final to worry about at the end of the quarter.

Unlike the evaluation below, I'll keep it short and sweet. THIS GUY SUCKS ASS! Can you say "mandatory retirement?" Sharp has been in admin for years and just came back to the classroom in winter 2001. It shows. I would think that a SPC prof would know how to be an effective public speaker. But this is not the case with Dr. Sharp. Out of the 4 lectures he gave, I feel asleep in 3 of them. He also doesn't grade fairly, and his written evaluations are illegible. In addition, we didn't adhere to the course syllabus, and he lost 3 of my grades!!! One upside is that he is very good in office hours. However, this is the worst GE I've taken in my 4 years at Poly.

Ummm....yeah. This guy is bad. Never lectures well except for the first or second day, something about speech being like leaky pipes? I'm not sure cuz it was the only thing that he lectured on. Anyways, as long as you can speak slowly, use hand gestures and be able to vary your tone, then you should be fine. It just so happens that these are the hardest fucking things to master. In the speeches, your material does not have to be extremely in depth. All you need to do is just give enough so they know what it's about. Oh yeah, he likes to hold his own hands alot which is a little freaky when you see him do it every day. He likes to crack extremely corny and bad jokes after every speech to try and get someone to critique the speech. He says he is retired, but only working part time. Even that is too much work for the old man. Sharp, if your reading this, you're past your prime, you can't help the future anymore. You're only hurting it. SO STOP!

All i can say is that the other people that reviewed this old fool must be living on a different planet than myself. If you are a spc major, you know how bad jackson is. This teacher makes jackson look like you are going to the circus. For the amount of coffee that I drink each morning it should be physically impossible for me to fall asleep, but somehow Harry Sharp proved this wrong again, and again, and again. Avoid this teacher at all costs. He is like the grandfather you DO NOT want to have. He lectured for 2 days about JFK and steel when it could have been explained in about 5 minutes. Truly a horrible teacher, he was taken out of retirement because he is friends with some big wigs at our school and this is an example of how awful politics can be. I did get a B+ in the class, but this is because I worked for literally about 10 hours a week on the stupid projects in this class. I learned absolutely nothing in this class (persuasion) except for the knowledge to ALWAYS check with your peers before taking any teacher. You can get screwed and have a miserable quarter. I know there is an entire class that agrees with me, and I am shocked to see that this man has not been ripped by other students. AVOID THIS TEACHER LIKE AN STD!!!!!

8:00 class...he takes attendance religiously. He left Cheetos chips finger prints all over my freind's midterm. In general he seem to take a real loathing to students asking questions and he even goes so far as to ridicule them for asking them. The book is he uses is horrible and he asks nit-picking asinine questions about it. In addition he disagrees with certain aspects of the book, yet fails to mention that untill after you get the questions wrong on the midterm. I think that the strongest evidence against Sharp is the fact that even the students who did well in his class still hate him.

Sharp did not care about his students. I have never experienced a teacher or professor so detached from his students. He would get mad when students asked questions; either because he did not know, or becasue he was just bitter. Bitter at what???? Maybe at the way an entire classroom looks at him like he's a dumbass, or possibly because half the class doesn't go because he's so boring. I doubt anyone would care to go to his class at all if he did not take attendance. Also, his subjective grading of essays is not justified. He has no legitimate reasoning. Just a bunch a mumbling followed by, "Well that's your opinion." Basically, Sharp sucks! He is thh worst teacher ever!

I graduated 19 years ago. Had Harry Sharp. Without question the absolute WORST teacher I ever had from grad school through college. Sharp is a perfect example of "those who can do, those who can't teach." I am absolutely convinced that Sharp has the I.Q. God gave a tire iron. If you look up "incompetent" in the dictionary, you'll see a picture of Sharp. It is hard to believe that he was actually a department head. I'm convinced his parents were brother and sister. Sharp is one of those people who has no business using up air that others others could use. Sharp gives Cal Poly a bad name. How the hell this turd brain got a job is the question of the century. The only job Sharp is qualified for is a "crash dummy" at an automobile factory.
