Andrew Schaffner is one of the best teachers you can possibly had. I took him my very first summer here and I could not have enjoyed it more. His lectures were so helpful, well-thought out and organized that you could pass the quizes just by listening and following the examples. His tests are extremely fair and honestly very easy in-order to pass with a B if you went to class, did homework, and asked questions. He treats you with such dignity and respect that you feel motivated to ask questions. He's young, intelligent and had answers to all your questions no matter how difficult they were asked. His grading is extremely fair and you'll learn to love him. Great teacher and friend. Ask him about his new kid (his wife gave birth in the summer). Great teacher for whatever class you have him for. TAKE HIM!!!

Lots of homework. Don't miss class or you will be way behind. 2nd midterm is very hard along with the impossible final. He is a really good teacher if you are will to put a good amount of time into the class. I would recommend if you understand stats fairly well.

One of the best teachers at poly. If you have to take this class and are dreading it, take him! I have never been good at math at all, it is not my strong subject, but i did well in this class. He is a great lecturer and explains things very clearly and answers any questions you might have. The key is to take good notes. There are about two homework assignments a week and one unannounced quiz a week. The homework is not always collected, but you should do it, it really prepares you for the quizes and tests. There are 2 midterms, which he grades on a curve, although they are usully very long tests, he accounts for that in the end.HE is a fair grader. Very good class, but you have to be willing to put time and effort into it. Don't miss class or not do an assignment or you will fall behind.

Dr. Schaffner is the best stat teacher I have had. He explains things very clearly and answers any questions. He does assign weekly hw, but its good because it keeps you on track. His first test seems hard because its not what you expect, but by the second midterm you get his style. he tests more on how well you can comprehend what you are doing and why you are doing it, rather than just plugging numbers. He is very fair and I reccomend him.

This is a hard class, straight. Schaffner presents material reasonably well, but tests are hard even with partial credit. Two midterms and one final. I thought the first was the most difficult due to a lack of time. I recomend taking SI, starting study groups isn't a bad idea either, and know the material well before walking into the test. Study sheets are generous but I couldn't believe how many people would walk into a test with a perfectly complete study sheet and know nothing on it, I guess expecting to figure it out during the test. Maybe that's why the test scores were curved generously for the bottom half of the class. I wouldn't recomend fucking Schaffner but that I know Rein is worse. Take this class seriously and do the work. G'Luck.

I'll agree, Schaffner is a nice guy, but he did not prepare us very well for his tests. He did not seem recognize that some of us were completely lost at points. It is obvious that HE understands the material but he does not do a good job of teaching it.

Dr. Schaffner is one of the best profs I've had. He is eager to help, explaining concepts as clearly as possible. He's very patient in answering questions. His lectures are structured, with a certain amount of time devoted to questions on homework problems. It is obvious that Schaffner puts alot of time into his lectures; each one seemed to fit perfectly into the 50 minutes. I never felt that he winged it. Tests are hard, he expects alot out of you. He's reasonable, though. To sum up Dr Schaffner, he's a very smart prof who's fair, well organized as well as a nice guy who has a good sense of humor. Take him.

Schaffner is an awesome teacher, straight up, no bull. Stat 218 could be a very difficult class with a bad teacher, but I was able to pull through it with very little studying. He lets you take in full 11.5"x8" sheets of paper for a notesheet for all exams, and he doensn't blow through the material in the lecture. He goes over it nice and easy. I don't think that there is too much material to fit into 10 weeks, which is why he can afford to go slow. The ONLY downside to taking him is that he collects homework randomly, so if you do all your homeworks except for, perhaps, the days he collects, you're just SOL. That's why I'm coming out with a B instead of an A. The exams are TOTALLY fair, straightforward, and if you've done the homework there is NOTHING new or unexpected. Schaffner's got a kooky, dorky sense of humour, but at least he has one. He's a good guy, a great teacher, and 218 is an easy class if you take it with him.

i was definately dreading taking statistics, but i believe that the teacher can make or break the class so when i read on poly ratings that he had a good evaluation, i felt a little better. i wasn't disappointed. he gives weekly quizzes that he doesn't really tell you about before hand but if you keep up with the homework they aren't that hard. they don't really reflect the test though because the tests are hard. i took the class as a bio support course and he uses real studies for his tests and examples in class, so it was nice to know that perhaps there was somewhere someday that you would use all this stuff. he's a nice guy and is good at answering your questions in class and out so don't be afraid to ask. He does NOT give study guides which forces you to learn a lot of the info for the test, so if you have questions ask them or he won't go into detail because he'll assume that you get it. all around i think i would have donbe a lot worse if i wouldn't have had this good of a teacher for a subject that i hate.

Wow! This guy really knows what he is talking about! He is a very good lecturer, and is helpful at office hours as well. The reason I got a C was because I slacked off for the first half. NOT SMART! schaffner is a really good teacher. stats can be hard and he is ofen willing to dedicate half the class to answering qustions about homework or things in class.the tests are pretty straightforward and easy if you study. He lets you have a whole piece of paper as a cheat sheet for the first test, 2 sheets for the second test, and 3 for the final. This is an easy class if you keep up and do the homework.

I personally was a little intimidated at the thought of statistics. However, Dr.Schaffner really made a lot of effort to make sure that his students understood his material by dedicating a lot of time to questions and having office hours pretty much every day. My advice for anyone who is not the best at math would be to use his office hours because they really help! I would recommend Dr.Schaffner for this course.

Stay FAR away from this jerk! He is completely unhelpful. He lies to you when he says to visit him during his office hours for assistance. Because he grades the home work, if you ask him for help, all he says is "Yeah, I don't know what to tell you" and won't help you with any of your questions. He is completely useless.

Dr. Schaffner is an amazing teacher. My class was in the morning, and he always came in with a smile on his face and a good attitude, which made me want to be there. You can ask any question in class, and he will explain it to you without ever making you feel dumb or intimidated. His lectures never feel rushed. Sometimes homework is confusing, but that is the book's fault. He'll go over any homework questions during class anyways, which makes it basically unnecessary to go to office hours. Take Schaffner!

Well, Schaffner is a pretty good guy. He looks like a miniature Paul Bunyan. The class is cool just because he has an optional final. He's not the greatest at explaining questions; he will not be able to answer you questions, and he also tries to tell retarded jokes. The tests are not too bad, they're straight forward, just do the homework and it will all make sense. Schaffner is a hairy mammal.

Schaffner was an okay guy, but a good teacher. I was freaked out from all these postings going into the class but going in with an open mind, the class wasn't all that bad. Scaffner really knows his stuff and although it may take some office hours to know it almost just as well as him, it's worth it. I admit I worked kind of hard and this class is almost like a freaking philosophy class, but if you're stuck with taking this with schaffner then don't believe all these postings you'll get through it! He grades on a BIG curve and has an optional final which helps ALOT during finals week. I just told myself to work my butt off the 1st couple tests so I didn't have to take the final and it worked. His tests are real fair and asks you basic homework questions, so if you do the homework you'll be fine. You're also allowed a cheat cheat every test (1 side the 1st test, 2 sides the second, and 3 the third) which helps. I'm glad I took this class simply because it didn't have a final!

Dr. Schaffner is very approachable. However, you must keep up on your studying and do not underestimate the tests because they are extremely difficult. His grading doesn't seem very fair because he curves the grades weird. I really suggest going to his office hours early in the quarter to show him that you care about the class. Maybe I would have done better. Remember that this class is not an easy A.

this guy really doesn't know how to teach the material. He tells it but doesn't teach it. He grades the homework which is kind of lame and when you ask him questions about the homework he only sets up the problem and doesn't go through with the whole thing. He gives pop quizzes which were usually based on the previous day of learning material to make sure that everyone is keeping up on studying. Midterms were pretty difficult and felt rushed because we only had an hour to finish. He gives some partial credit but not a whole lot. The final was pretty hard as well. Overrall i would recommend a different professor for this class.

Dr. Schaffner is kind of strange in his teaching methods. He teaches through example, I think that is the best way to describe it. He doesn't lay out the facts about the methods we learn or explain the method. He gives data from an experiment and if one statistical method doesn't work he shows a new one. If you like that then he's the teacher for you. I don't like that way of teaching, but I got the information while doing sudoku's everyday in class and thought it was easy.

Dr. Schaffner really knows statistics but he is not an effective teacher. He is able to approach a question in multiple angles and instead just repeats what he said the first time. I understood the material for the most part but he seemed to change the way he evaluated tests as the quarter went on. One moment he will say he gives partial credit for questions and then the next he will change his mind when he grades it. I've known many students who've approached him with questions and confusion and he is extremely unhelpful. If u have to take STATs I would highly recomend taking a teacher other than schaffner. Schaffner can be a little intimidating at first but he is an great teacher. Make sure you read the book either before or after his lecture so you can make sure you understand what he is teaching. It helped a lot. He doesn't grade the homework but make sure you do it! There are 3 midterms, and a final. They aren't easy but they are manageable. Schaffner was a pretty cool guy. Stats isn't the most exciting subject, especially at 8am, so I have to give the guy a little credit. This class definitely keeps you busy. There's a homework assignment for every lecture, which aren't too bad and he grades on completeness rather than correctness. There's a quiz every week except if there's an exam. There are 3 midterms, which can be a bit tricky sometimes but just go over your homeworks and quizzes when you study and make really good cheat sheets (you're allowed a cheat sheet for each quiz and exam). I recommend doing the assigned reading. It helps if you don't understand lecture. There's also 2 group projects but they're really easy. He loves it if you ask questions, especially ones on the homework...he just wants people to speak up and participate in class. But it helps your grade I think, so ask away! And go to office hours, which also helps your grade. Participation and office hours determine if he'll bump your grade up from, for example, a B- to a B. Hope that all helped! Good luck!

Dr. Shaffner was great about assigning homework due weekly, but spreading the work and reading over the days so it was never too much to manage. Professor Schaffner is a very kind, helpful professor. He cares about his students and wants them to do well, but he doesn't pamper you. There is a lot of homework for this class! It's very time consuming, but you're graded on effort, not accuracy. Put in the time to figure it out the first time and always check the correct answers once he posts them. Study what he tells you to for the final - he really means it. Stat 218 is by no means a fun or an easy class. But if you are required to take it for your major, I recommend Schaffner. The class is pretty time consuming in terms of hw, and you will have either a midterm or a quiz every Thursday. However, he does a great job of explaining statistics concepts--even ones that are really difficult to wrap your head around. Dr. Schaffner is a really good teacher despite the rather boring subject (at least to me, absolutely no real bio involved besides the examples in the book). If you had AP stats in high school the class is rather similar except you do all of your computations on a computer instead of using tables. The class is involved, there are homeworks due every week along with a quiz (these things really help your grade out though!). This really keeps you on top of everything though. There is also a small (easy) project that is a good grade booster and an easy A. For each quiz, the three midterms and the final you are allowed one full page of notes which is really nice because there are quite a few formulas and rules to remember. If you do have Dr. Schaffner, for studying for the midterms/final, I would recommend doing the unit summary exercises in the book (Do all the questions, not just the ones he assigns for homework). He likes to pull questions from them or make up similar questions. Also, he likes trick questions so take your time on the tests and really think about what is being asked! Overall, I would definitely recommend Dr. Schaffner for STAT 218!

Professor Schaffner was a decent professor, but can improve his expectations on what content will be covered on the quizzes, midterms, and final. Homework was assigned daily and expected to be turned in at the end of every week so it is vital that you do the homework the day it is assigned, as he gives a fair amount and you will be up all night if you leave it until the last day. We used an online software to calculate most of our values for the homework, so the quizzes usually were not covering the same type of problems. Quizzes were also held at the end of every week and usually very different from the homework, as we cannot use the online software for quizzes, so many of the questions were conceptual, not doing calculations like the homework. We would cover lots of material before every midterm, but only one small portion would be focused on which was frustrating when you would study lots of information in preparation. Overall a decent class, I just wish that the things we were practicing for homework showed up on the exams. I would highly recommend doing the assigned reading with the homework as I found the text very clear to understand and immensely helped me in this class. You get a full sheet, one sided, for every quiz, midterm, and final so the class is very manageable just make sure you fully understand all the concepts behind the calculations.

Dr. Schaffner is an extremely kind professor. He always has a smile on his face and is so kind to all of his students. In office hours, he explains things very clearly for you too. The weekly quizzes are fair, and the 3 midterms aren't too bad, the first one being the hardest. His one downfall is that he spends almost too much time answering questions in class that we run out of time for new material and fall behind, so you're doing homework problems on material you haven't gone over in class yet. He is also very fair. I highly recommend taking him. I've never taken stats before and he made it a breeze.

Schaffner is definitively the ideal teacher to have if you're gonna take stats 218. This class can be very work heavy because we have 3 midterms for the whole quarter and also quizzes everyweek. This class is an easy B if you do the homework and listen in class. Most people struggle in stats because they fail to pay attention and ask questions but if you do those things, you'll get at least a B. As for getting an A, it can tough as quizzes and midterms are 80 percent of your grade but if you work hard it'll wont be that bad. Definitely take Schaffner if you can as he is probably the best stat 218 teacher.

This guy is such an awesome teacher...I think he is best one at Poly for Stats. Highly recommend....I received an A, because I really took every quiz, lab, and of course test very seriously. Every point counts. His lectures and not meaningless at all, I listened to his every word because I knew it was relevant. His second test is the hardest one, alot of concepts that you should write on a cheat sheet (which he allows...up to three in fact). Also, any time a question was asked, he would not put you down and solved your problem right on target. He is also very helpful in his office hours, and it is a necessary component of the class. First off, this Stat 252 was a BITCH. That said, it's not totally his fault (it was a 5-week summer class...so 2.5 hours a day, 5 days a week of statistics). He does a pretty decent job explaining things and he is always willing and able to answer any questions during class. He's real helpful during his office hours too. His tests on the other hand...HELL. On the first exam, NOBODY in class finished on time and the average score was like an 82/120, which is a "D." I think I got like an 85...and that test was all on material I had already learned previously in another class and got an "A" in. The second two were a little better and I did well enough to pull myself up to a "B+", but still...that first exam pretty much screwed everybody over. Bottom line: He's about an average professor, so don't avoid him because I've heard that some of the Stats teachers are really horrible. But if you can take a better instructor, go for it.

Schaffner knows his stuff, and is willing to help in any way he can. Our class was his first time teaching Stat 350, so it was a little rough on the edges but otherwise OK. Make sure to take EE228 before this; its a prerequisite, but I thought I didn't need it, but it is necessary to understand the filters at the end of the class. The class seems to have no point until the last week, when you learn about filters and other ways to process signals. The book is very scattered and pretty useless I thought, except for the problems at the end of the chapter. If you stay on top of things and have taken EE228, you should do fine. I hadn't taken EE228 and the math at the end killed me.

Like the previous evaluation before me, Schaffner was teaching 350 for the first time this quarter, and was working out some bugs. He is a very approachable guy and does all he can to help you out in office hours. His class composes of homework collected every week, quizzes that make up the same point value as a whole midterm, 2 midterms, and a final. His quizzes are some of the hardest problems that you will encounter with respect to the material you are learning. His midterms are do-able, but you can go from an A to an F real quick (I got an A on the first midterm but got an F on the second). Out of all the professors I have taken for any course, this professor is perhaps the most vague when it comes to telling you what to prepare for on his tests or quizzes. Bottom line: if Carlton is teaching take him over Schaffner, Schaffner is a good lecturer, but take him only if you are willing to put in A LOT of time and effort outside of class as well. This class is NOT easy.

Schaffner is a very good professor for Stat 350. He realizes that, to a bunch of engineers, it seems like a statistics/probability class is a waste of time, but he makes sure to constantly remind you of how it relates to circuits and electronics. Furthermore, his format is very straightforward: daily problem sets that are "recommended" to do, weekly homeworks that pick a few problems from the daily sets for actual hand-in, a few (announced) quizzes, two midterms and a final. Always do the homework, and try to do some of the optional, non-collected problems too, just for study's sake, because he posts solutions to everything. The first midterm catches people off-guard, but you're ready for the 2nd one when it comes, and the final is decent. All tests include a manufactured forumla sheet (his work), and the final also allows one page of handwritten notes; of course, if you know the stuff and know how to use his premade forumlas, you won't even fill up a page with extras. Also, if he's teaching 2 sections and one is early in the morning (like 8am), you can attend the later one for lectures, but you must be at your official section for quizzes and tests. Bottom line: Recommended highly.

Mr. Schaffner is a great instructor. However, he makes the class way tooo hard! He doesn't recognize that the class isn't important, and that the EE and CPE have all major courses we want to concentrate in! His midterms and quizzes are nothing like the homework. One of his midterms' average was 50%. I definitely learned a lot from him, but at the same time, I felt like I wasted too much time concentrating in a class that I will barely use in the future. Although this class is a prereq for EE 314, I've heard that you don't need it, and I have friends who have concurrently taken both classes, or I heard someone took EE 314 before taking STATS 350. In other words, don't take Schaffner if you have a choice! If you are taking him, prepare to become a Stats major.

Not much to add to what others have said below. The class is challenging, he has a lot of enthusiasm, and he's a nice guy. He has a knack for answering questions clearly and completely.

Schaffner is a dick. He is a pretty good lecturer, he knows his shit. He does a decent job explaining things, and will pretend to give a fuck about you during office hours. But the truth is, Schaffner doesn't give a fuck about you or any other students. He could give less of a shit about how well you do in his class. The only reason he helps anyone is to get them to shut the fuck up. He will definitely not give you a grade representative of your performance. In fact, he will give you whatever fucking grade he wants to give you, because, as I said before, he is a dick. You can go ahead and get A's on both midterms, and then a raw C on the final (which would curve up to an A- based on the representative midterm curves). But he will still give you a B.

he is a really good speaker so as long as you pay attention the class isn't hard at all... trouble is most people don't find stat interesting so they fall asleep... if you put in a decent amount of work and don't day dream in class, an A is not too hard to get... if you hate stat and don't want to put any work into it... take someone else... if you're willing to do the work, highly recommended

It's Spring 2004, and I'm pretty much done with my undergraduate career here at Cal Poly. I had Andrew Schaffner for the 426-427 mathematical statistics sequence last year, and it was an invaluable learning experience. His exams and homework problems actually make you think, as opposed to the work in other classes, which are just cookie-cutter problems. He is a guy you should look up to and respect. After all, he did go to Cal Poly himself, and he later got his Ph.D. in statistics. He is a jack of all trades, teaching every statistics course from probability, applied statistics, and statistical computing. This guy is awesome!

Dr Schaffner really was a great professor. He knew the material really well and did a decent job of explaining things. However, the class was not very organized/structured. The projects were very hard as well (but he knows this and doesn't expect perfection). The class grade consists of quizzes, hw, projects, and final where hw is weighted the most heavily. A lot of this class is figuring stuff out on your own which is kind of like real life. He is very helpful and patient in office hours. I think the final grades were curved but we didn't get all our graded material back. I hope he teaches R again next year. Hes very nice as well, what more could you ask for.

I have the privilege of rating Dr. Schaffner, who has been my senior project advisor. He's a great and patient guy, and in every meeting, I learned something new. Both of us really wanted a lot from this senior project endeavor, and for the most part, it's a good start. I highly recommend Schaffner for anyone who wants to get something from their Cal Poly education. Thanks!

Schaffner is very enthusiastic and always smiles when he teaches! He is a fair grader. I found the class to be a little bit disorganized. He would tell us that we would have a midterm a few days before the exam. The notes are not always clear and lectures can be confusing. Schaffner is very patient especially when explaining a concept during office hours. It is hard to get help from him though because there are typically at least 5 students waiting to get help from him. It is nice that there is a student discussion board on PolyLearn where students can post questions about the homework. He is flexible and is willing to push back homework assignments and the project due date if students are having a hard time. Most of the weekly homework is assigned from the textbook. His grader would grade a few problems from each homework assignment. The exams were really hard and were not like the homework problems. Students have to really understand the concepts well. The final includes true or false questions.
