Russell is a good teacher, but the content was hard to follow because I had no music experience. This class seems to be more geared toward people who have some musical background. Take his advice the first day of class and see what MU 104 is about.

Dr. Russell was a great professor for those who had music for 12 years, which was about 75% of the class. For the rest of us, we just had to tough it out and try to follow the rapid pace and his inability to identify your problems. And for some reason he refused to tell me his office hours in class. He said he'd email them but never did. In the end I have been turned away from trying to learn music again and I am just glad to be done with it. DON'T TAKE THE CLASS UNLESS YOU'VE HAD EXTENSIVE PRIOR MUSIC EXPERIENCE!

Dr. Russell is one of the best teachers at Cal Poly. Just like any other music class at Cal Poly, MU 101 is not simple or easy. But all you really have to do is about 2 hours of memorization at the beginning of the quarter and it's easy from there on out. If you really want to learn something useful and interesting take Russell. I looked forward to his class everyday. He's the best.

john is a really nice man, and he tries to make the information as interesting as possible. if you have a musical background, this class is really easy, however, if you are new to music theory, the class may be slightly challenging. his tests are fair and the music composition project at the end of the quarter is fun and an easy 50 points. the information doesn't extend any further than augmented, diminished, major, or minor triads, so if you can already do that, definitely take this class for an easy A.

This was the easiest GE I have taken at Cal Poly. I took this class credit/no credit because i had no musical backround and everyone on here made it seem hard to get an A. I studied ten mins before each test and the final, did no homework (suggested), and got a B. Easiest test ever. Tells you ever single thing that will be on it before hand. Two midterms, a really easy project, and the final is your grade. I still kick myself for taking this class for credit cause it would have been the easiest A in my life. Take this class with this professor.

John Russell is one of the best teachers in the music department. His knowledge and understanding of music theory is unsurpassed. If you want to learn about the interworkings of music, take his classes, even if you are not a music major.
