Not a great teacher. Does not cover material in a manor which students can understand. Does not know how to communicate

I have never seen such amazingly confusing assignments! Don't let the easy few weeks in the beginning control your work habits, cause the class gets way worse. its even more fun since dr. ross monopolizes the 111 course, and no other teachers are available. 30 students and 15 computers in the lab, so you can do the math. Don't bother taking notes or listening EVER! Find the kid who looks super smart with computers and be his best friend, or else you will be at home the night before class with a barrel of a 12 in your mouth and your toe on the trigger. Some assignments I got, and were fun, but most of the time i spent pulling my hair. His exams were full of tricks and f@$% the whole sheet of paper study card bit, it won't help you one damn bit! Plan to do terrible on the exams unless you are a VBA codemaster, so try your best on the assignments. So in conclusion, make smart friends and get really faded before class cause this class is as fun as pulling teeth; better go to it anethetized.

I am a Civil Engineering major and computer programming is definitely not my thing. However, Dr. Ross did all he could to help me learn the basics in CSC 231. He was really patient with students and always helpful in or out of class. I can't imagine a better professor for a computer science course, especially for those who aren't adept at computer programming.

Dr. Ross was an excellent teacher. He really knew his material and was extremly helpful in his office hours. I you are willing to put forth the effort, then you will do fine. He is a nice guy and is very understanding.

Professor Ross definitely knew what he was talking about, even though sometimes it seemed that he expected us to know this already, he was really good to back over material if we didn't understand. If you are having trouble you can stay in the hour after class and he's more than willing to help you with you 're assignment or project or whatever. I would recommend taking him.

A decent teacher, but a somewhat hard grader if you aren't super interested in the most boring of classes FORTRAN! But, he only lectures for 1 hour and you get the second half of the class to work on projects or leave. Only nice part about this class-

Ross seemed to endorse pessimism more than anything. I've heard he is the best of the computer science department which says a great deal about the mediocre instruction within the computer science major. The class is basically "computer science for dummies" or "computer science for those who are in other engineering majors who can't do computer science." Ross went out of his way to make sure that we felt like dummies. The class starts off easy as hell and then approaches insanity toward the end of the quarter. Most of the assignments(esp the ones after week 4) will have you pulling your hair out. Rarely was I able to find time during the lab where Ross could actually help me. The two tests(midterm and final) will have you cursing at Ross for including so many freakin tricks and awkward problem statements. The quizzes that he gives run along the same lines. My best advice is to find someone who has taken it before or find someone who knows fortran(not even my comp sci friends knew how to program in fortran because it is almost a dead language). The class was boring as sin and chewed up a great deal of time for 2 freakin units. I had a horrible experience overall and I owe it to Ross and the rest of the crappy computer science department. One more thing- I took intermediate dynamics(the course that you are supposed to have fortran for) and didn't use a single bit of fortran. I truly believe that this class is a useless waste of time (I think the ME dept also belives in this) and I'll probably learn C or C++ down the road from people who really know what they are doing.

Prof. Ross is a very nice man. However, he has almost no knowledge of C++. His lecture style is erratic and uninformative. He will try to help you if you go to his office hours, but it's best to find someone who has at least a rudimentary understanding of programming to ask questions. The quizzes given were ridiculous. The assignments ranged from incredibly simple to terrifyingly difficult without any real in between. The midterm and the final weren't terrible, but he has a tendency to put information he never talked about on them. He does curve the class though.

Dr. Ross is the worst teacher I have had at Cal Poly. He is boring and does not know what he is talking about. The class is all on computers and all of the assignments are also. I would not have minded doing the work but even Dr. Ross could not help me out with some of the questions I had. If you take this class BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He treated this class like students were expected to know every aspect of computers. I have a solid background in computers and although I was able to do well, I felt bad for other students taking this GE who weren't expecting it to be so broad. Not only does he require students to learn and coding language (javascript), but makes them learn binary conversions, bitrate conversions, and a whole bunch of useless number crunching conversions. Additionally, you must learn the history of computers, which he tests you on rather meticulously. I'd look for another way to fulfill the Area F requirement if you're looking for a class that actually assings a workload proportional to a GE.

Ross's CSC 310 class was, hands down, one of the worst classes i've ever taken. Althought he has an okay knowledge of computers, his ability to present the material clearly to students is terrible. He is incredibly boring and unorganized. I would HIGHLY suggest finding another way to fulfill area F because this class was just terrible! His assignments were easy, but pretty stupid because you could pretty much just cut and paste from his example online, and his tests are ridiculous. He tests on material that only people well knowledged in computers would know... which is stupid because, hello!! it's called "computers for poets" for a reason!

this was the WORST class I've taken here at poly. the man does not know how to teach at all! He never showed us how to actually create a webpage--he just showed us the website he created and basically told us to copy and paste it as our own (with a few changes). if you can, take a different area f while you still have the chance!

This was not the "computer for poets" course I was expecting. I've heard that is an easy A class and it WAS NOT!!! There is 1 midterm, 1 final, and 5-6 lab assignments. He allows a cheat sheet so i suggest you put everything and i mean EVERYTHING on it. Ross is not a good teacher for this course at all because his voice is monotonous and for 1 1/2 hours he just spends it flailing his arms, dancing around, and occasionally mumbling something useful for you to jot down on your notes. A very, very useless computer class because he expected students (who do not have a computer background like me) to understand javascript, binary code, and other technical computer language. Really DON'T TAKE THIS COURSE TO FULFIL YOUR GE. I had to work my butt off for a B.

Worst teacher ever. If you're going to take your F requirement, take it SOMEWHERE ELSE. He gave out papers for "what would be on the test" and NONE of it was. literally: NONE. He'll give you notes on a video for the midterm, and he will PURPOSELY ask questions on the midterm that aren't on the notes he gives to his students. I'm talking RANDOM questions that have nothing to do with the basic content of the freaking class. He's incompetent and makes Cal Poly University look horrible. I can't believe that guy gets paid anything.

Ross was an okay guy. True, he isn't the greatest teacher in the world, but his little dance is pretty entertaining and never gets old. You will have to do some work to get an A or a B, but not a ton. He gives you a pretty clear outline of what he expects on assignments and tests. I would highly recommend using the tutoring hours to tweak website assignments, even if you don't think you need any help. Ross hires two CSC grad students to help out and they are great as far as helping figure out and solve problems. USE YOUR CHEAT SHEETS TO YOUR BEST ADVANTAGE! They are the only way to pass tests and quizzes! Overall, not the best class in the world, but definitely not the worst.

Ross is actually a pretty funny guy. He's real reasonable/flexible and the class is cake ( pretty much the easiest class I've ever taken at poly. I'm a bio major that was looking for a real easy GE class to go with my intense bio/chem labs and this was absolutely PERFECT. No HW, no studying, ZIP! On the midterm, final, and quizzes you can use a cheat sheet (front and back)so pretty much no studying at all) Although you may learn little about computers (because he doesn't explain the material that well..)this is an extremely easy class if you have a hard schedule.

The class is an easy A. He lets you bring in one sheet of notes back and front to all tests and quizzzes. Just put everything he says on the paper and you should get an A. This quarter, he said that about 3/4 of the class got an A.

Dr. Ross was fantastic. He held a fairly entertaining lecture, was helpful when asked questions, and gave assignments and quizzes that were of reasonable difficulty. Even when the entire class bombed an assignment or quiz, he gave extra points. The cutoff for an A on the midterm was a 28 out of 40. I have no quarrels with the professor. I do however have quarrels with the students. It seems like the difficulty of the subject was directly inversely proportional to the ineptitude of the students. BE WARY OF ABOVE CRITICISMS OF THIS CLASS/PROFESSOR. While I do feel that this was an easy course (no, I'm not a CSC major or something) it's STILL A COLLEGE CLASS. Come on people, this isn't 5th grade anymore. You have to actually put forth at least a minimal amount of effort to learn the material concerned if you want an A in the class, simple as that. It was simply astounding how resistant some of the students were to putting even a reasonable amount of time into learning the subject matter. Less than favorable reviews about Dr. Ross's job in teaching this course are, I suspect, more of a refection of people's frustration about their Area F class not being a reasonable substitution for naptime, and simply an unjust portrayal of how this class was actually conducted. As long as you aren't a vacuous sloth, you should do just fine in this class.
