I recommend Peggy Rice for Chem 111 lab. She was very helpful during the labs and office hours. She will even help you answer questions on the lab reports so you have the opportuniy to accumulate more points. She is extremely nice, she will make you feel comfortable, and she will be understanding if you must turn something in late. But don't make a habit of it. It is also pretty funny to hear her say, "uh huh, yeah" all the time.

Dr. Rice did very well I thought for first time teaching chem 111 lab. She was very open to questions on the lab reports. You could ask her anything and she would go over it with you, almost answer it for you! Overall, a very good lab teacher.

Dr. Rice is a wonderful teacher. She is more than happy to expalain anything that is unclear in her lecture or lab class! Her lectures are very thorough and organized. It is a good idea to have basic Chem. skills down before you try this class. There is a good deal of material covered in detail so you definitely need to study! Personally, I couldn't have asked for a better Professor - She is an excellent resource and very human.

Dr. Rice is one of the best professors I've had at Cal Poly. Her grading is more than fair, her teaching style is very effective. She is extremely helpful and very understanding. She always welcomes you when you go to her office hour. Her experiments in lecture are fun and interesting. One of the great things about Dr. Rice is she always welcomes feedback/criticism. She is always willing to improve her teaching styles. I love how Dr. Rice treats her students with utmost respect. She always makes an effort in making the student feel comfortable when he/she approaches her at any time. I couldn't have asked for a better professor than Dr. Rice.

Dr. Rice was fun. She was Crazy- she made balloons filled with nitrogen and oxygen explode when she put a flame to them. Sit in the front row so you can see that huge ball of fire up close. She also ran around the room pooring liquid nitrogen all over the lecture room floor and it was intersting to watch it scatter like Mercury around my feet. She really enjoys the subject she teaches.

She hands out a packet of notes at the start of every class so the material is very straight forward and you know exactly what to study for the exams. The exams are difficult, but there are never problems that she hasn't warned you about. You get practice tests, review sheets, outilnes for each week of class. She is very organized and it helped me a lot in taking this class. I had her for lab also, and she isn't so good for that. I would take her again for lecture, but not lab.

Dr. Rice is a GREAT teacher. It's a tough class but she makes it easy. She handed out packets for the different chapter disused in class so you don't have to take elaborate notes. Her lecture moved fast at times and I would recommend not missing any. She gave practice tests and even had study sessions the night before the test. She always had a demonstration at each lecture. She's also very willing to help during office hours.

Dr. Rice is devoted to what she does. Her passion for chemistry and teaching are apparent each day in class, and she wants so badly for her students to succeed. I reccomend going to office hours, and asking questions in class. Her course is laid out well, and she tells you exactly what to study for the test. I loved this professor.

Professor Rice is a great teacher! Take her! Go to lecture and take notes-in fact, she already has typed out the notes for you and all you do are practice problems. I ended up NEVER using my book and just used the notes. She makes mistakes in her practice problems she does with the class (which is why everyone bitches about her) but it\'s no big deal because she or half of the class will correct her. Don\'t rely purely on the practice exams she gives out because her actual tests sometimes won\'t match up. The practice problems in her notes and the study guide will help you the most because they\'ll cover anything that could possibly be on the test. Do the extra credit on the test before you do anything else because it\'s a free point and it\'s always an easy question (If you could be any element, what would you be?)

THIS IS A DIFFICULT CLASS. There is a ton of information being thrown at you in too little time. (take a chem workshop with the class- extremely helpful) That being said, I had no prior experience with chemistry whatsoever, not even in high school, and I found her class to be excellent. If you go to class, and read the book, and take the practice exams you will do well. She is really clear on what you will be tested on, her class follows the book to a tee. Great professor.

Probably my favorite professor this last quarter, Dr. Rice was very influential and helped me a TON with Chemistry. This lab is not very hard the only reason I got a B was because I goofed off all Thanksgiving break and didnt look back at my old lab reports. Had I taken just a couple hours to review them for the final, I would've earned an A guaranteed no question about it. Go to her office hours!!! She will help with whatever you need and even answer some questions from the lecture. I hope to take her again someday I recommend her 100%!

Dr. Rice meant well, but there was something wrong with her delivery. This was a studio class, so you're in the same room for both lecture and lab, staring at a computer screen on which Dr. Rice is displaying the lecture notes. Dr. Rice constantly got wrong answers to her own demo problems but then expected perfection on the poorly-written (but not by her, to be fair) labs and the tests. Homework is assigned but never collected, and there were three midterms, seven labs, and a final. I didn't do a single homework problem and studied for under five minutes total and got a B+.

Professor Rice is a real nice lady, let me say that first off. From there it goes a little south. She has a real hard time structuring lecture so that all the information is covered. She seems very unorganized and unprepared everyday. Almost all of the time, she gets the wrong answer to her own example problems. However, she is always there to help and she is very helpful in her office hours. She only graded us on test and quizzes the whole term so it was fairly tough. This is because her practice problems and study guides are really easy and straight forward, but then her tests and quizzes are tricky and hard. I would recommend getting a better teacher than Dr. Rice if you have trouble learing on your own from the book, otherwise you should be okay.

Well, Dr. Rice is a very nice woman, though I think she should stick to teaching biochemistry. I'm not certain that her grasp of general chemistry is very strong. I'm more than a little nervous to take 128 from one of the other professors as I don't feel like my background is all that good. In her defense, general chemistry is a huge field and mastering it must be difficult. Perhaps in a couple of years, Dr. Rice will be an acceptable choice.

Dr. Rice is very nice and probably knows her stuff. However, I took 127 with her and it was her first time teaching it...so she was disorganized and made a lot of mistakes during lecture. Her tests were generally pretty difficult, and the quizes are what kill your grade. She is also VERY helpful if you have a question and NEVER will make you feel stupid. So, if you want a nice teacher take Dr. Rice. If you want one that presents the material clearly, go with someone else.

Dr. Rice is a very nice professor. It is clearly evident that she knows Chemistry very well. However, her style is a bit hard to follow. At times she will condradict herself during a lecture several times. However, she prints out lecture outlines and assigns homework problems in the book. The mid-terms and finals are tough but she will tell you ahead of time what topics will be on them. I had her for both lecture and lab and I would recommend her to someone who is interested in learning about Chemistry and who is willing to work hard. I earned a C because I had a hard time understanding the material and didn't do all of the recommended course work.

Dr. Rice was horribly boring and unintelligent in her lectures. She failed to convey information clearly and even accurately. The students had to correct her mistakes half the time. She gives you an outline in every lecture and practice problems are on the outline. She also assigns problems from the book, if you understand everything on her outlines you will do well on all of her tests. You have quizzes every week but she drops your lowest quiz. You have 3 midterms and one final but she drops your lowest midterm or 1/2 your final. Easy to ask questions, very nice, presents the information well.

The class is hard so be prepared to work! but Rice is a really great teacher, she will take the time to answer questions in class and office hours. the exams are hard and you often don't have enough time to finish, KNOW everything in your notes!!! she will basically pick specifics of a few things rather than an overview of everything. the book can actually help clarify stuff but most everything comes from her notes.

Ok, I dont deny that Rice is a good professor, just DONT take her for chem 313. She goes WAY into much depth for a survey class and sometimes her tests are not representative of what she asks you to study. I'm not just saying this because I had a bad grade, I am an A student and have taken the whole O-chem series and I still find this class ridiculous. She is nice but asks too much of you. Sometimes she fails to relate things to the big picture and remind you why you should care.

SO, I think that Rice should stick to her upper division nutrition and metabolism classes. She should NOT teach this class. She goes in to every freakin little step in everything and expects you to memorize it. Honestly, you really don't learn that much either because you don't have any time to actually RETAIN anything. Pretty much instead of teaching you useful things, she shoves everything possible down your throat then expects you to regurgitate. This is not learning in my book. This is a good class, just take some one else who is better at teaching it.

Rice was an excellent teacher for CHEM 313. She posts lecture outlines on blackboard, which are exactly what you go over in class. She even leaves blanks in the outlines to write extra notes and to do in-class examples of test-level exercises. The only downside is that it takes a lot of printer ink. But I will say that you really don\'t need the book. I used it once or twice to do some extra practice problems and look up a few things, but she gives out her own practice problems and the things I read in the book could just as easily be read online. Anyone who complains that the class is difficult obviously did absolutely nothing to apply themselves. I put in minimal work for the class and got an A. I did the online homework (she gives you credit!), attended every class, and studied for the tests a day or two beforehand. You would definately be doing your brain a favor by studying earlier than that, but you can still get an A as long as you are OK with memorizing a lot in one night! As for the lab, I thought it was a breeze. The concepts are cool and easy, and you will only have maybe 2-3 hours of outside work for it throughout the entire quarter. Not bad!

Rice is AWESOME. She gives you the notes to print out and it contains ALL of the information you need. There are some areas where she draws in diagrams and stuff and so I don't suggest skipping class (besides, the class is pretty interesting so I don't see why you would). Her midterms require extreme detail and an accurate understanding of the conclusions of experiments and chemicals used in processes and their affect the organisms. So for the midterms, I suggest memorizing absolutely everything and they'll be a breeze. The final is a little easier and doesn't have much of the new material but make sure you study past midterms and the homework because those are a key to at least a B. Overall, biochemistry in general will require a lot of time to be set aside to study but Rice makes this easier by giving you all the tools you need to do well on her midterms. Awesome class, awesome teacher.

Dr. Rice is a great professor. Her lectures are very clear and straightforward. She posts her blank templates of her overhead/laptop notes on blackboard and she explains things as she fills in the blanks. For that reason, her expectations were very clear. Her tests were straightforward and without any curveballs. I took her for survey of biochem, and her grading was very fair. I'm not sure how she is for Chem 371/372 but I'm sure she's a bit more strict on her grading and expectations in those classes. For lab her grading is very loose, and doesn't penalize very harshly. Most important, she was very clear during lecture, insuring that her students learned the material. I definitely learned a ton in her class! Take her.

I believe that Dr Rice works really hard to aid her students towards being successful in Biochem. Her class consisted of quizzes (15% of overall grade), one midterm (25%), the lab grade (20%), and the final (40%). The quizzes were always fair and I did well on them if I studied previous notes before class. The midterm and the final were also very fair, especially because she provided the class with a study session or two before each exam where everyone was welcomed to come ask questions, and I personally would not have been as successful on the exams if it wasn't for those study sessions. It really solidified for me what she expected- the sessions always took place at night and lasted as long as the people who came continued to ask questions; each session was about 3 hours long and almost everything that was on the exams was covered during them. I also enjoyed how her lectures always connected to what we were learning to interesting, real-life topics such as why people with diabetes sometimes have a sweet smelling breath. If you put in the effort, you will enjoy and be successful in Dr Rice's class.

Dr. Rice really knows her stuff; however, I would not recommend taking her for Chem 313. She goes way too in depth for what is supposed to be a survey course. I had her for both lecture and lab. If you have to take this course with her, I'd strongly recommend not taking lab with her as well. Her pre-lab quizzes are ridiculously difficult, and almost intentionally tricky. Her in-lab quizzes should be called tests because they are two and three pages long and take almost an hour. Her lecture midterms are fairly difficult and require an excessive amount of studying. Overall, I would not recommend taking this course with Dr. Rice.

Excellent professor, highly recommended. Dr. Rice is very knowledgeable and does a good job answering all student inquiries. Additionally, she provides lecture outlines that require you to fill in the blanks throughout the lecture. She also fills in the majority of the information for you on the screen. I never opened the textbook as her exam material came directly from her lectures. Just pay attention during lecture and you will do fine on exams. The only minor qualms I had with her teaching style was that she can be very nit-picky on exams and takes off many unnecessary points. Additionally, she does take daily attendance by administering short in-class assignments during each class period. Regardless, she is a great professor and I would definitely recommend her.

Dr. Rice is a really sweet person but I would not recommend her as a professor. Maybe I just didn't like her teaching style, but it seemed like her notes were overly 'dumbed down' to the point that what she taught seemed not even scientifically backed. Also her tests were basically just asking you to regurgitate what she tells you about topics but not necessarily in the book (which is more scientific if that makes sense).

I LOVE PEGGY RICE!!!!! She is an incredible lecturer who presents the material in an interesting and easy to understand way. She has these outlines of her notes up on polylean that she asks you to print out and bring to class, then she lectures right off of them. Personally, I think it is an excellent way of lecturing because you dont miss any crucial information! She is also very personable and makes the difficult information easier to understand by relating it to real world situations. She provides practice exams, past exams, and homework, but none of it is ever due. She treats us like adults, while also providing us with ample study material. Her exams are really hard (all short answer), but I believe she prepares us well. If you have the chance to take Dr. Rice for survey of Biochem, I would HIGHLY recommend her.

First of all, this lab kicked my butt. By far the hardest chem lab I've taken at CP so far. ok for everyone who's bashing rice, stop bitching because you got a bad grade. She is a VERY straightforward teacher (especially compared to other biochem teachers) and when she says to know something for the test, learn it. it's that simple. Take the time to memorize the amino acids (because believe it or not, you WILL use them again in your lifetime) because you'll do badly on all the tests if you don't know them. and No, it's not just easy for biology majors cuz we've learned all this stuff before. I don't think it gave us an advantage at all. (if anything, it's a CHEM class so your chem classes would probably help you out with the chem part of it wouldn't you think?) She sells a book with all her notes, you NEVER need the textbook so don't bother buying it because if it's in her book of notes, you do need to memorize it, and you will be tested on it. if you can follow those simple instructions, you'll be fine

Dr. Rice needs to review general chemisty as the information she presents in class on general chemistry is often incorrect. It doesn't hurt your understanding of the material that much, but any instructor teaching a chemistry class should not have difficulties with basic chemistry. On the positive side she is one of my favorite instructors on campus despite having received C's in both the classes that I took from her (I'm a 3.5 average student and I'm not accustomed to getting C's). Metabolism and Biochemistry are tough subjects though and Dr. Rice presents them clearly and is always eager to help students with questions. The lab notebook format is time consuming and if you are planning a heavy load this can be an important factor. Expect to spend twice as long filling out the notebook as in other biology classes. lastly, the final exams are difficult!

Dr. Rice was an awesome professor and made the class very interesting. She does not delude you into thinking this is an easy class, it is A LOT of memorization. So much material is covered every day, but going over the notes frequently makes it much less overwhelming when the exams come. The final is intense, but you get a one page cheat sheet (start making it early!) which is incredibly helpful. Holy Zeus and Christ Almighty, metabolism has a ridiculous amount of material, and it's impossible to prevent from being sucked down into its sticky entanglement of pathways that pull you in deep, tightening around your arms and legs as you gasp for air and look desperately for a solid piece of logic to grab ahold of. But no, you slip away like young DiCaprio drifted into the icy abyss, despite my classmates' encouraging whispers of "don't let go". Alas, it's done, and Dr. Rice sure did help in learning it. Her material is practical, and she's always willing to help answer questions. The printed notes ensure that the class doesn't get off track; no matted how many questions I asked during lecture we still finished glycolysis, Kreb's cycle, electron transport chain, PPP, glycogen, fats, amino acids, and nucleotides with twenty minutes left in the final lecture. The material is fast, unnecessarily fast because over half of it is never tested on. I would rather split this class into two quarters and actually learn the last half of the material decently well instead of just rubbing the information over my brain, just to have it flake off a week later and leave the occasional crusty tidbit of knowledge that managed to adhere. Dr. Rice is enthusiastic and always teaches from a medical perspective, which is effing awesome as a premed student. She's always relating it back to real life, and doing her best to make this potentially dry subject entertaining. That being said, the supplementary scientific papers that are assigned and never tested on feels like she's squeezing 6 M HCl over an open wound. I would take Dr. Rice's class again any quarter, but perhaps with other easier classes. Do yourself a favor and take 12 units during your metabolism quarter.

Dr. Rice is an astute lecturing professor. She has a candid ability to repeat information clearly with emphasis on what she finds most important in a lecture. So if you want to learn in her classes, then go and learn. I also took her metabolism class listed as CHEM 372 and boy is it a lot of information! I would suggest to annotate using a laptop if possible, but print out her lecture notes so that you can make drawings. I have a mac so I annotated using Preview, then I printed it out a few days before the midterm and made flashcards using my notes and the study guide that she so graciously provides about a week before her exams. This class is heavily dependent on the exams and writing assignments. I would suggest to pick a topic to write about well before it is due and write up a rough draft so that she can review it. Her grading for writing assignments is very strict as this is a graduate level upper division elective. So that is why I received a B+ and not an A. I did well on her exams and averaged above a 90% on all three non-cumulative exams using the aforementioned technique. Good luck whether you're in this class or in her much more difficult CHEM 372 class which requires you to be on top of your material and thorough recall abilities.

Dr. Rice is an amazing professor! I took advantage when this class was offered since it is only taught once every two years. This class is made up of 2 exams, a paper, and a final for undergrad students. Graduate students are required to make a ~30 minute presentation.
