This is one of the best classes I have ever taken due to the fact that Dr. Rheingans is an awesome teacher. Not only is she laid back, but you can totally talk to her. However, her class is not an easy A, you do have to do your work and she expects a lot from her students, but it's a class that you look forward going to and I found myself eager to learn, even though English is usually a subject I detest. She is definately a teacher that I would like to have again.

I felt as though I had to kiss her butt to get an A in the class, which I did not do. She did not help you improve your essays, even though on your first draft she would tell you how good it was, and you would end up with a low grade on the final essay.

I am a good writer and I found Profesor Rheingans class very easy. The hardest part was actually going because I never got anything out of the class. She's very nice. And very approachable. If you take advantage of her office horus and her willingness to read your essays before they are due, then you will get a good grade. I always asked her to read my essays before they were due and she told me what to change, I did, and then got no lower than a 90% on my final essays! I recommend her for English 114.

Sherrie really does care about what is going on in your life. If you write about personal topics or experiences, she will remember them. She never judges people, so it is safe to take any position you want in her class. If you are a good writer already, you will be set, and you will get a good grade. She isn't very hard on her student's writing. However, if you lack writing skills, she doesn't do much to improve you, and you might have a difficult time getting a good grade. Class time is not spent on instruction, but on class discussion and free writes. I never went to her office hours, but I heard that she gave good individual attention there. Overall, I think Prof. Rheingans is great, and from what I've heard about other 114 instructors, I would definately recommend her.

Sherrie is very laid back. Grammar is very important. You could write the most interesting or creative essay but if there are any minor grammar mistakes expect a "B". All I seem to get a "B" no matter how much I tried or didn't. One great thing though is that she actually reads the essays and takes time in doing so. This shows that she actually cares about her students. ANOTHER great thing is that she does not waste your time in her class, if she is done with her lecture she is not going to waste your time and start trying to do useless worksheets. She is very considerate of students busy schedules!

Make the first paper you write is the best one you do because she type cast students into that grade rang. No matter if I spent 2 hours on the paper before class or a week on and visiting the English tutoring lab she would just give me C. Very difficult to deal with in office hours and I think that she is kind of crazy.

The class was extremely easy. There is hardly any homework, just weekely journals. There is a significant amouny of in class writing, but it seems that if you show up and do it, you will get a good grade. The essays were pretty easy...she doesn't seem to grade harshly. I got a 97 on one, 100 on another, and i don't know about the last one. She is nice to her students too. I recomend her as a teacher...but the course material is pretty boring.

Sherrie Rheingans is a very sociable teacher who likes to talk with students. She is someone who thinks of herself as Tigger. In her class, we talked about how life was going and then we wrote in-class essays based on a reading selections she gives us, which were not graded. It was relatively laid back. However, she is a tough grader. I wrote a paper that I thought was deserving of an A, but she gave me a grade just short of it. Despite the fact that she likes the connectivity and expression in your essays, she will come down real hard if you have spelling, grammar, or sentencing errors. Your grade is based on weekly reading logs, a descriptive essay, argumental essay, and a research paper and there is no final. When we have our first drafts due, we get into groups and make comments on each others' papers and you get feedback from the teacher. The classes usually get out early as we only talk about a few things and then write an essay that is collected but not graded. I would highly recommend her for English 134 because she is approachable and willing.

Professor Rheingans is very enthusiastic about her work. She loves to hear what you have to say and she carefully reads everything you write. She likes to have friendly conversations with her students. She's more of an enthusiastic friend than a professor. You do write a lot of essays however. And you must read for twenty minutes a day and turn in a response every week. The majority of your grade is the three essays that you'll turn in. There aren't any tests! She knows how to be friendly with her class and how to be enthusaistic about writing. I highly recommend her for English 134.

Sherrie tries to be nice, but she comes off as phony and I don't think she's all that bright either. Rheingans is cool because she lets you out early, but I hardly learned anything from this class. I learned that if you have a different opinion than hers, you will be penalized for it. Professor Rheingans is amazing!! It is true that there is a lot of writing, but what do you expect to do in a collegiate english class? I hate english, seriously, especially if I have to read, which you will also do on almost a daily basis. But I earned a B+, and I had an A the entire quarter until the research paper was due at the end. I am proud of getting a B+ b/c it was the only grade that kept me eligible in sports and saved me from academic probation. Peep this: I am taking professor Rheingans for ENGL 149 on purpose, that's how great she is. If you are taking an early class in the morning with her, she might give you a few days off because SHE might not want to be in class. Be prepared to work, but also be prepared to have fun and write with some creativity. If you turn in the assignments on time and put forth a good effort, you will be satisfied with the grade that you earned. TRUST ME ON THIS ONE.

Rheingans has got to be one of the most fun teachers at cal poly. She seemed to be more concerned with getting to know her students than actually getting into all the boring english details. She spends the beginning of every class finding out how each of her students are doing. Most classes we just had a free write on something personal so she could get to know us as both people and writers. She only lectured once per essay. We also had workshops in class for most essays. Just about the whole grade is the essays so if you're not already a decent essay writer, take someone else. She grades essays very generously though so it's easy to get an A in the class. I was about 10 points away from an A so don't let my grade fool you. She lets you out at least 15 minutes early every class which is always a good thing. Take Rheingans if you can because she gives good feedback on all assignments.

Sherrie is a good professor who makes this otherwise dreadful class more fun. She is not always the most informative teacher, but she understands that this is a GE class and treats it like such. This class is pretty laid back as there are only three essays and an easy reading assignment for this class. She never wastes your time in class. She does, however, come down hard on you if you make grammatical mistakes, but otherwise, she grades rather easily. If you just want to take writing classes for GE credit, she is a good professor to take as her workload will help you learn only the essentials.

Good professor. I would take her again. The best thing about her class is that we never had in class essays. The bad part is that she made us do a research paper. She grades really hard and she does not know how to teach. Her papers are o.k., but she wants way too many emotions to come out on the paper and i am not that kind of person. In reality, she was not as good as others had said. Her class may be fun, but u wont learn anything. the reviews claiming sherrie is an "awesome" teacher are not completely unfounded. she is an awesome teacher for a student who wants to go to class to have a fun time conversing with other classmates. she is interested in the students lives, and she often askes questions pertaining to the student's weekends and such. However, students don't come to school paying thousands of dollars to come to a class where you get to chit chat and have fun all the time. sherrie's friendliness acts as a cover up for her lack of teaching skills. There are two reasons not to take sherrie for english 145. 1: She does not give constructive criticism pertaining to the actual argument presented in papers. Instead, she will write such comments as, "thoughtful, and well thought out." or "slendid" with no real explanation as to why the grade was given. 2: She is biased, favoring arguments more in line with her own. This makes for a highly erratic grading system. I got 100 on my first paper, spending about 2 hours on it. I took a more controversial stance on the second paper, and recieved a grade 8 points lower even though i took 5 more hours to research and write the paper. If you hate English, and just want to go through the least amount of pain possible, take sherrie. If you want to improve your writing skills, i suggest you find a more serious proff.

I thought the class was okay. It was never too boring, if you show up the hour usually goes by fast and with out any effort. You end up doing group work and pointless little discussions almost every day. The only problem i had was with the teacher. She was nice as could be to your face, but is a complete feminist and 100% biast towards women. All the assigned reading is about womens issues or some type of topic related to women. Unfortunatly, the grading follows this same trend. If for some reason you end up in the class, the only piece of advice i can give you is to kiss her ass, get on her good side, and write all your papers on topics she likes. I didnt, and i got screwed.

This class was pretty easy overall. I didn't mind going to it everyday, as most of the class was just talking about what you did over the weekend and things like that. She grades fairly easy on her papers and I got an A on every single one, but her midterm exam is really much harder then most of us expected. Sherrie was a wonderful teacher, she understood that this was a support course for engineers, and so she didn't waste our time with tedious busy work, or expect that we put this course as our number one priority. She gave us "real world" projects, where we were pretty much given free reign as to what we chose to do in our groups, our final consisted of an oral presentation with our group the week before finals, and she tried to place our workload during the time in which our other classes weren't piling on work. We got the bulk of the course done with between the 4th and 7th week of school, that way at the end of the quarter when all our engineering courses were getting difficult, our english course was basically done. Word of advice though, she seems to have a pre-concieved notion that engineers are stuck up, and are going to treat her with disrespect, so if you respect her, which isn't hard to do, and try hard in the course, it will be a breeze and she will really love you!

Prof. Rheingans is an awesome professor. She really understands all the work that students have in other classes, and she assigns work in her classes accordingly. She knows when all our other classes are having midterms and she makes her projects due on different weeks, so we don't get totally bogged down with projects and tests. There is only one test, which is super easy. There are 3 group projects, which aren't too difficult, but she is super strict about grammar. So make sure your grammar is perfect. Wonderful teacher. She clearly displays the material and emphasizes the due dates the projects are due. She gives out of class time every week to work on our projects. This is always good when you dont want to come to class at 8am often. You will have 6 projects in this class, 3 individual and 3 group projects. She assigns these projects well in advanced and the topics are open enough to write to the minimum requirements and more. Though the projects overlap each other (for example she will assign group project2 to be due in 3 weeks, then the next week will assign individual project 2 a week later). This is not a probelm you will have plenty of time to complete everything. Basically I highly recommend taking this instucter if you wish to be taught most of what you need to know about technical writing and have an easy class while you are at it. Enjoy Prof. Rheingans. By the way, spell her name correctly or you will be crusified.

She gave a retard, that she thought was "adorable", an "A", when he had errors everywhere and had an incorrect title page. She is simply the coolest person ever. Yet, tech writing is the biggest BS course I've ever taken. If there was one course at Poly which I really didn't take much from- it was tech writing. None of this is Sherrie's fault. I really think the Engineering Department needs to teach this course. Take this class! I has Sherrie for another class, and did not like her but I figured I knew the way she taught so I would take her again. She was a great tech writting teacher! The course load in this class is most likely more than in other tech writting classes but you will finish this class with more confidence than other engineering students. This class is built on team work and you must pull your own weight. The first week of school she will let you pick groups (choose wisely)and for the rest of the quarter you will be working with those same people. There are three group projects and three individual projects. The projects all seem to have the same directions. This can be frustrating but if you pick good topics to write about the papers will be very easy. She really only grades on grammer and spelling, and the last group project is a joke all you have to do is summarize what you did in the class and kiss some ass. This class is not really that hard as long as you stay on top of your work. Most of the groups in my class got low B's and C's because of her skewed grading scale. It is easy to pass this class but hard to get and A.

OMG. I missed an A like by one or two points for this class. Technical writing is not the most interesting or engaging class in the world. Baicially this class is mostly following instructions from the book on how to format different types of documents. Rheingans will mostly grade your work based on your word choice and grammer. BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT THIS. Every point will count cuz it is a 100 point class. As a teacher, Rheingans is very laid back and understands that Engineering majors have harder classes than ENGL 149 to deal with. Because she understands this, most of your classes will end early so that you can work on other stuff. The middle part of this class is hard because there will be a period where there is a paper due every week; however, you will be grateful in the last two weeks, because you baiscially do nothing and there is no final exam or project, thus giving you time to do work for other classes. I would definitly reccommend Rheingans because you will be less stressed when Final Exams hit.

This class was enjoyable. It was unfortuntly at 7am five days a week. However, I surprised myself by never missing a class. This is my first morning class that I've never skipped periodically. I'm not sure if that had to do with her taking attendance randomly or the fact that I truly loved this class. She made the class enjoyable and treated us like equals. I've never had a teacher do that before. Also, she understood we had more important things to do with classes that are actually engineering related, so the workload wasn't too harsh. There were several 1 page memos to turn in but a page of writing isn't that hard. Plus there wasn't a final, only a 4 page paper. However, just make sure that your grammer is great. Have a few people proofread your paper before hand. I didn't get one paper proofread and that's the reason I ended up with a B+ instead of an A. She will nail you for grammer.

Professor Rheingans (make sure you spell her name right) made Tech Writing a joke. I had heard rumors that this was a difficult time-consuming class, but Rheingans made it so easy! Don't take this class if you want to learn anything about technical writing, because you really won't. I failed every quiz, and the quizzes are the only thing that shows your understanding of anything in the book or anything about tech writing for that matter (but it's only worth 5% of your total grade). She's entertaining and very nice, but everyday I wondered why I woke up to go to that 7:00AM class. Take this class with 3 friends for the easy group work assignments, and you'll be fine. Write concise and dumb it down (so even a business major could understand it)... that's all you have to do.

Two important things, I like her as a human being. But I dispise her as a teacher. I don't know if I should blame her or the curriculum. Whoever created it was just making it look like we were going to be learning something important for the future. Memo's are not that important to learn that they should take up a couple of week's time. When you get a real job, they just say, copy the format of all the other freaking memo's. Stupid. She never taught us how to do anything else besides memo's. She never even mentioned how to make a white paper and it's worth 15% of your grade. The midterm had nothing to do with technical writing. All in all, you learn absolutley nothing in this class. So what's the secret to getting an A? I figured it out after the class was over. The secret to getting an A, is to not actually try to learn anything other than what she wants. Almost like real life, learn what the boss likes and do it her way. If only I'd realized that my friends who were spending 5 minutes before class doing a memo real quick, aka bullshitting, were getting full credit because they wern't actually trying to learn how to write an effective memo. They were just writing what they knew the teacher would give full credit for. So there you have it, the secret to the class. So, she doesn't teach you how to do anything. (Doesn't present course material clearly) She recognize's student difficulties, she just doesn't care. Her overall grade. F(Failed). Rheingans, if they are forcing you to teach the class this way I'm sorry. But if you're choosing to waste an entire quarter of our time here at cal poly with people doing back flip stories and sock puppets you should be ashamed. P.S. For some reason your final grade in technical writing has something to do with memorizing everything she says, then regurgitating it on the quiz the next day.

I wasn't looking forward to taking tech writing, but Rheingans made this class very enjoyable! I actually looked forward to coming to class, I can't say that for any other course I've taken. There are some short individual assignments, three group projects, and of course the technical white paper, one essay midterm, and no final. The white paper is pretty easy compared to the ones I've seen done for other professors. The midterm is also very simple as you get to write about something you enjoy. Unfortunately, there wasn't much "technical writing" in this course, except for memos and an instruction manual. I think a better job could have been done teaching about other forms of technical writing, but overall this professor is EXCELLENT!

A very upbeat enjoyable teacher. I recommend taking her. If you put effort into your work you will do well. You have three group projects, a white paper, a midterm, and a bunch of individual assignments. Be sure to get a good group because you will be spending a lot of time with them.

In my 215 class, we got out no less than five minutes early every day for the entire quarter. There's a ton of group work, damn near every day. She'll usually spend ten or fifteen minutes explaining the chapter and then throws everyone into group work when she's done. We had an essay due every week and a half or so, and they never got longer than 5-6 pages. The first few were only 2-3. She grades pretty subjectively; my scores varied within 8-10% with the same number of comments on the paper. She never told us what we could improve upon because we were "doing so well," so she didn't really help out much there (at least for me, but I was getting A's anyway). She was very approachable though and it's a really laid-back atmosphere. I'd definitely recommend her if you've already got good writing skills and you're looking not to push yourself.

I felt that I learned nothing from Sherrie. She would make many rude comments to other students. I didn't learn anything in her class. She acted to much like she was a 20 year old student rather than her age. I wouldn't recommend her to anyone!
