Rein, Steve  

Steve is a very good teacher. He is very approachable and a pretty nice guy. He's young but a but nerdy. This class isn't too tough, and he amply provides enough support for the tests, but you do have to study.

Steve is hillarious! He's the total stereotype of a stat teacher... with a corny sense of humor that somehow works!! Going to class can sometimes be like going to a comedy act. He pulls apart newspaper articles and basically the whole jist of it all is to make up your own mind on the statistics you read in your every day life. It's pretty cool! If you're goin towards stats, Steve is the guy to take!

I had Dr. Rein in the spring of my freshman year. It was the first time in a very long time that I remember doing well in math. His lectures are clear and he made the subject interesting by relating it to every day life. He is fair in grading and accessible if you need help. He is a good prof and I would definately recomend him for Stats 130.

I'll admit, I did a half-ass job and got a half-ass grade. Towards the end of the quarter, I didn't go to class, I didn't do the homework, but I still did ok, which shows how easy this material is. I mean, this is Intro to Stats. It's a cake walk. Steve Rein is funny, too. He's young and has 4 kids. It's a riot to hear him tell anecdotes. Every week you have a quiz, as well as a "lab" every class period that you turn in at the end of the lecture. It's just a question or two based on the lecture he just gave. There are 2 midterms and one final (cumlative), as well as 2 mini-projects and 1 final project. The projects are easy, just working up to the final project, so the final project is easy b/c you just have to organize and professionalize (if that's even a word) all of your previous work.

This guy knows that people who are taking this class are doing to fulfill a GE requirement or because stats/math suck. You have to study and stay on top of the course material but if you work with Steve, we will work with you. There are weekly quizzes, daily homework, in-class labs (they are really easy), two midterms, a final, a mini project, and a final project. All of this is factored together when it comes time to get your overall grade. He is very understanding (probably because he is young and has kids) and knows why kids enroll in this class. If you have to take a GE Stats course take this one and if you get Steve, go to class, show some interest, and develop a rapport with him - you

His presentation of statistics was as stimulating as a "math class" can get. Though a little quirky, it adds to the class' capacity for academic enjoyment. Goes over things in depth as long as you ask questions; not an easy A necessarily, but your overall grade definitely shows as a direct result of the amount of effort you put in.

So overall, Rein was by no means a bad teacher. He does his best teaching, in my opinion, a really boring subject to students who probably do not like math at all, least of all statistics. He's actually a really nice guy and definately knows what he is talking about, although he does get some things mixed up a few times but it's usually stuff like grammar, which is quite funny. To me he's like an older beach bum mixed with super nerd, which can be very entertaining. His midterms are pretty lame, but his projects are not hard. Definately ask questions in his class, it helps so much. So if you are looking to just get a GE covered and maybe learn a little bit of stats take him.

Dr. Rein makes STATS interesting and applicable. If you do the homework and ask questions, you should do just fine on the midterms and final. He has you do a pretty fun project. The material is easy (but then again, I am a math person).

Profesor Rein was a great teacher. He was entertaining to listen to, and had a funny personality. Besides that, he lectured very well and made the material as easy as possible. His midterms were not a cake walk, but if you paid attention in class and did the homework they weren't bad. Do the homework and study at least a little for his exams and you should get at least a B. He is very helpful in his office hours, and I would definitely encourage taking him.

the worst teacher I have had at cal poly, actually even my entire life. The most disorganized and confusing course ever! He never handed back homework or quizes or hardly any other material. The tests are nothing like what is gone over in class or in homework. I would study for hours and hours and still not pass. He acts as if he does not care about the class because he does not bother to do anything! I can't emphasize enough how frustrating taking a class with him is. Do not take it.

He's a very average professor with really difficult tests. Definitely passable, though you should REALLY do your homework and be in class on Mondays (that's his quiz day if you have him Monday-Friday). He is nice, but lectures can get kinda dry especially if you're not interested in the subject. Not the end of the world if you get him as a prof.

If you want to take stats from a teacher who looks like he rolled out of bed into the classroom, then Rein is for you! Hey professor, I think you have some burrito chunks in your beard. But lets ignore his personal hygiene and get to his teaching. Worst teacher I have had at Poly. His teaching style and way of answering questions is extremely confusing, and it doesn't help that the book isn't all that clear either. He doesn't give back homework or tests until months after they are assigned, if at all. Half the class fails the second midterm? I'll just make a joke about how terrible they are at stats without even considering that my teaching might have something to do with it. One might think that an introductory stats GE would be more focussed on critical thinking and common sense than meaningless formulas and equations that 90% of the class will have no use for. Also, any other person giving this guy a somewhat positive review should not be trusted. This is satan in a dirty, middle-aged mans body.

Unnecessarily difficult class. He was extremely disorganized; We only got one of our quizzes back the entire quarter and rarely ever got homework back and he returned the midterms months after they were taken. He taught the material in a way that just confused everyone instead of clarifying, and was condescending when you tried to ask questions. Not helpful. If you do the homework and study for the midterms, you should be fine. Don't rely on him to help you pass this class. If you get him its not the end of the world but prepare to work extremely hard for a sub par grade.

Professor Rein is a nice guy. He does his best at trying to help his students. But this class sucked for me. I am NOT a math person, so that should be taken into account. But everyone else was having difficulties too (we had a group study thing and talked about it). I read the polyratings from a few year back and took the chance with taking him and I seriously regret it. He is better suited to teach an upper division class. He is always really late in getting things graded and back to you even though he has a grader (also he doesn't hand back things pertaining to a midterm before the midterm date which is really annoying). His midterms do not follow the practice tests or homework, some questions are real curve balls. His teaching method is pretty one tracked. He doesn't really teach more than one way so if you don't get it, then you are screwed. In my opinion he has gotten so used to teaching this class that he is unable to define and explain things objectively. He just can't explain things in a way you should if you were talking to someone who had no talent for stats, or previous experience with stats. This class was overall really difficult for me and I would not recommend taking it with Rein.

Doctor Rein presents information very clearly and makes it easy to understand even if you are very mathematically challenged and know zero statistics like me. His tests are exactly what he goes over in class and not confusing, and he lets you have a full 8x11"cheat sheet" on exams (and he helps you make a good cheat sheet in office hours). Also, is goes to extra mile to help students, for instance I MISSED my final that was on FRIDAY, and he let me take it the Monday AFTER finals week. He is sort of weird and sarcastic but not mean. He address and answers questions very clearly and thoroughly.

Rein definitely gets a bad rep but for me, his class was fairly enjoyable. He is a funny guy, just has a hard time clarifying things at times. Stats is not an easy class but if you go into his office hours he helps A LOT one on one. Overall, I would take his class again. The tests are pretty hard and I walked away from all of them thinking I failed, but I got Bs on the midterms. He makes hard tests, but grades easy.

DO NOT TAKE! he answers questions with questions, skips over material to fast, expects students to already know stats.

Dr. Rein is the best. He taught well and thoroughly, was passionate about the subject matter, and even came through for me when my dumb ass mixed up final times and showed up over an hour late. I'm a third year now and he's still one of my favorite professors I've had to date. Truly the G.O.A.T.

Steve is a good guy. I enjoyed his class, because he made it fun. He is kind of a nerd and tells corny jokes. Sometimes they are so corny, they are hilarious! I really liked his labs and teaching style. He is more than happy to work out problems students had troubl with.

DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. I got blocked into this class Fall Quarter of my Freshman year and wish with all my heart that I had dropped it. He would not write examples of problems on the board; he would talk through them and change the numbers as he went along. I did not receive two of my quizzes back and still to this day do not know what grade I received. He will give you a grading rubric at the beginning of the quarter, but will not follow at it all, so tracking your grade is nearly impossible. His class was my only B my entire first year at Cal Poly, yet I worked my butt of.

Mr. Rein is definately full of stupid jokes, but he is a really good teacher. He lectures really well and shows you a couple of different ways to do things. His graders stink because they don't grade like he teaches. His tests are really hard, but he prepares you for them really well. He's great at answering questions and is really good at responding to email. I recomend Steve Rein for STAT 218!

Dr. Rein is one of those teachers that is very knowledgeable in his subject, but could not teach it in a comprehensible manner if his life depended on it. Statistics is a foreign language in itself, and he did nothing to help bring it down our level. The homework grader was terrible, marking unnecessary points off. Tests did not reflect review questions. He's a huge advocate of a program called Minitab, which teaches shortcuts that are unhelpful on tests. With its shortcuts, Minitab does not help a student learn pratical statistics for future use; instead teaching us to rely on an expensive computer application. Still, the final project (if done well) can save a bad grade. Good luck.

Dr. Rein is knowledgable and interesting. He uses interesting examples and jokes around a lot and tells cute stories about his kids. He explains how to do things well, but it can get a little fuzzy when he explains the concepts. You get points for a lot of different things (tests, homework, quizzes, project), so you can make up points if you're bad in one area. One tip, make sure you know the concepts well. There's a lot more written out answers where you have to explain things on the test than there is on the homework, which is all numbers. The best way to study is to do his past midterms, which are posted on the web. He's a good teacher, but you have to do the work and understand it.

steve is a nice and understanding guy, hes very knowledgeable of the subject...but that the same time..when you ask a question..he doesnvt tell you the answer..to help you. he thinks that those dam power point print outs are all good...talks too fast...just wasnt there for you.. usualie midterms are tryin to mess with you..to see if you understand..doesnt follow past midterms or homework questions...dont take him

Professor Rein...worst jokes ever. Wow! In terms of the class, statistics is a whole different language. Basically throughout the term, you learn 15 different ways to answer the same question, but the hard part is figuring out which method to use...not easy. Rein uses statistics terms to explain the material, which is hard to follow if your not a statistics prodigy. You have a group or individual quiz every week, usually on Mondays. These are pretty easy if you somewhat know what was covered the prior week. Homework assignments are due twice a week, and any questions are gone over in class. There are two midterms that aren't too difficult if you know what your doing, and a somwhat cummulative final. Also, there is a big project to do either by yourself or with a group, basically it is easy buy work that can improve your overall grade. I don't think statistics would be easy with any teacher, so might as well take Rein, it wasn't too bad.

Rein knows his stats, but he knows them so well that when he presents the information to the class it is confusing. If you ask a question, he does everything except answer it. He is a smart guy, but if you want to make it through his class you need to visit his office hours regularly.

yea, so his jokes weren't that great - did you really sign up for this class for the laughs? rein presented material clearly and often in several different ways (if we didn't get it the first time) and his grading seemed pretty fair. i never wen't to his office hours so i don't know how he does one on one but i'm taking the class that 218 was the prereq for right now and teaching people how to do stuff, and i never read the damn book. i sat in on several professors sections when i was trying to crash and this guy was the best prof i saw.

Professor Rein is one of the worst teachers I have had here a poly. The material content really isn't that hard, he just doesn't teach it very well. His lectures move really fast and he doesn't take time to explain anything. He does all the example problems on minitab, but on the exams you are expected to do all the problems by hand. He never did example problems on the board, which left me teaching myself everything from the book. I think this class would be better if it was taught in a computer lab. If you get stuck taking Rein, I would print out his lecture notes which are available on his web site and do keep up with the homework. If you have other opotions, I WOULD NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! He does not explain the material, quizzes once a week, homework is due twice a week and the midterms are ridiculously hard and cover stuff he never even talked about. He talks about viagra and is just plain weird, if your a cute girl, you will probably do fine, seeing as he borders on molester status. he can't answer your questions, and talks really fast. STAY AWAY!!

First this class just plain sucks. The information is pretty easy for the first half of the class but then gets kinda confusing. Rein talks really fast so that half the time you finally understand what he is talking about he is already three topics away. He is not very helpful answering homework questions, and tells a lot of not so funny jokes. If you pay attention and go to class you will naturally understand the material but if you slack off at all you will get behind. If you have to take this class that sucks but good luck.

I found this class to be reasonably challenging. It's not a class that you can slack off in and expect to do well. Homework load is reasonable, and homework isn't due in class (which is nice if you have trouble with it). But if you don't keep up you won't do well on the weekly quizzes. The tests are a bit hard, and 50 min. isn't a very long time to finish them in. He does talk way fast in lecture and concepts can get confusing, but he does tell you beforehand so it's fair warning. He's always in office hours and will respond to e-mail pretty quickly if you have questions. The book isn't the easiest to understand, and the class HEAVILY relies on knowing Mintab (Stats prog.). So if you hate Minitab I wouldn't reccomend this class.

This teacher was ridiculus! He didn't care about his students, he acted like it was funny when they didn't understand concepts, and he wasn't helpful at all! I worked harder in this class than I ever have before, and learned everything from the book (since the teacher didn't help).

Well......where should I start, there are so many things to say about the evil Mr. Rein. First of all he is the worst teacher I've ever had in my life! He talks at lightening speed (so that you can't understand him and ask questions which he doesn't want to answer) and if you do ask him a question he will just change the subject or give you some useless information. He told us that we could do test corrections on one question (each question has like six parts) on the second midterm and me and my roomate spent like two hours on it and we didn't get any points for it because we calculated one number on one part wrong!! It was so riddiculous! The project is really stupid and he makes you sample like 200 people like we have nothing better to do. So whatever you do do not take this class unless you want to devote your life to Stat. 218 and like to deal with obnoxious professors!!! Mr. Rein is truely evil!!!! Stay Away!!!

Do not take!!!! Many better choices. I should have taken Pollard. All the bad ratings you read are true.

This guy. He seems okay at the beginning of the quarter, and it seems like a relatively easy class if you\'ve taken stats before. And then you get your midterm grade back. His grading is so subjective and if your answer is ONE word off, you get a shit ton of points taken off. His teaching style is awkward, its more like just talking rather than teaching. And he makes terrible jokes throughout the whole class period. If you can avoid him, do it.

Rein was an interesting teacher. He explained things in class well then had the homework that was related to that due later in the week. The homework was light and relevant to the material but the book generally had more math in it than his test which were more wordy. He can come off as an idiot but he is smart, understands the material and genuinely tries to answer any questions but even then people have trouble understanding. He also lets you have a piece of paper with whatever on it for the midterms and final which was nice. Personally I had never taken stats before and did the required homework, and studied for the test by making the "cheat sheet" and got a high B so it's a light load class. If he still does the once a week computer lab, minitab things then don't skip on those days; really you just sit there on the computers going through the lab but they really solidify everything you learn in class. I liked him and I would recommend him if you're just taking stats because you have to.

Rein's class was horrible for me. I tried really hard to stay awake, but I started giving up towards the end. I even brought my laptop, went on AIM and facebook and he still managed to bore me to death! Overall, if you just do your homework, you'll get a B in the class. Oh yeah, don't expect to ever see your homework until....three weeks later? Or the end of the quarter. Apparently the TA didn't do his or her job.

Terrible, terrible, terrible. Doesn't hand back graded assignments or tests in a timely manner--actually youre lucky if you ever see them again. You never know what your grade is, grader seems to write arbitrary numbers as I somehow got a B- on a hw assignment (the only one i have gotten back, mind you) that had 100% on every single problem graded and was only missing a single problem (out of about 20). Goes through the lecture WAYYYYYY too fast and doesn't post the slides on his website until WEEKS after, sometimes not even before the next midterm. Uses an excessive amount of pointless analogies that are completely unhelpful. Doesn't give even close to enough time to finish tests. Doesn't respond to emails. Textbook for the class sucks but get used to it because you'll be teaching yourself 100% of the material from it. I'm sure Rein could be a decent professor but it just seems like he doesn't even care enough to try. Also he misgraded a pretty large amount of tests on our most recent midterm and didn't even notify anyone or regrade them (I only found out about this because I compared mine to a friend and brought it to his attention and he told me that he had received a lot of complaints about misgraded answers--seems like something you might want to fix?). If I'm going to study my ass off for a test, kindly grade the damn thing correctly and in a timely manner. Hes just lazy and the way he talks through his hands at the class is annoying. Doesnt have my recommendation.

Basically, Steven Rein was the worst teacher I've had by far. He was ridiculously disorganized, he never handed back quizzes, homework, and never posted his lectures slides online. Super arrogant, especially when I went to his office hours. I felt like an idiot for asking questions. Btw, the homework is SO unhelpful. His tests are nothing like it. All of his tests were conceptual, even though none of his quizzes nor the homework he assigned were conceptual. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!!

Looking into professors to take for Statistics 218 I saw the questionable ratings and ignored them. Never again. Also, Let me put this in perspective by saying that this is the first professor at Cal Poly I have disliked, and it saddens me that such a wonderful university has to be associated with this joke of a professor. Reasons Why to Avoid: -He doesn't teach. He blabbers on about experiments (don't worry they have no actual relevance to the test) -He talks at the speed of light in a tone that makes your head want to explode with frustration. -His tests do not match his lectures or the homework. Half the test is made up of conceptual questions (true/false) that are subjective half the time. do the math, doesn't work out very well for you. -You will NEVER get back homework, quizzes or other assignments before the test, despite the fact that he says you should study from them. -His power points are irrelevant to his lecture, and the only way you can can force any teaching out of him whatsoever, is by reading the book before class and asking him to explain concepts (aka structure his lecture for him) -oh, don't let me forget, his office is literally nauseating. There were about 20 empty soda cans strewn everywhere, papers all across the floor (maybe that's where my un-returned assignments went) dirty coffee mugs everywhere and food stains on the chair he so kindly offered up for me to sit in, while he failed to actually answer any of my questions. IF you are trapped into this torturous man's class, here's how you can survive" 1. BUY THE BOOK (and commit hours to reading and taking notes from it, its your only chance of learning) 2. ASK QUESTIONS (on homework and concepts on the book) and continue to re-ask and rephrase them until they are actually answered. Do this in class, the germs in his office aren't worth it 3. DO THE HOMEWORK EARLY not just by when its due. That way you can have questions to ask in class. 4. FIND AN OUTLET FOR YOUR STRESS AND FRUSTRATION. You don't deserve to feel this way. Treat yourself to some kickboxing, maybe yoga, or a good scream into your pillow. My deepest sympathies go out to you.

He is a great teacher and willing to help you. Treats you as a person not as a student. He may go off on a tangent but study the material and go to office hours and he will help you understand the material. Will give the shirt of his back to help you succeed if you try.

I found STAT 218 to be ridiculously hard for about 2/3 of the year. I was seriously worried that even though I studied for the tests more than I studied for any other class I would get a C. But once I started going to Mr. Reins office hours and asking more questions the class became loads easier. Mr. Rein is a really nice guy, and he is more than willing to answer the same question over and over again if you still don't understand his explanation. Overall I learned a lot more than I thought I would

I dropped this class because I realized that I'd have to teach myself the content (since Rein wasted class time telling jokes or talking about really unimportant things). My class was the MTWR 1 hour class so there wasn't much time to learn. Don't waste your time, pick a different prof.

I usually don't blame professors for my poor grade. But he was not helpful in any way. I had to teach and learn all the material myself because for the majority of lectures I would sit in class and have no idea what he was talking about. He would often ramble and wouldn't give examples. If they were examples, they were already done and you would have to go back after lectures and review them. The tests were difficult too. The first and second midterm was mostly conceptual. But the third midterm was a little better. Throughout the whole quarter I only got back my three midterms and from that was the "gauge" for our grade (it was so frustrating!). He never passed ANY homework or quizzes back. On the first midterm I got a 62, the second I got a 55, and the third I got a 75 and overall ended with a C. I think what helped me the most was reading the textbook, DOING HIS PRACTICE EXAMS, being in a study session, and purchasing Chegg study solutions. I'm surprised he hasn't been fired yet because of his inability to teach, and calling sick and canceling class right before midterms and the FINAL. Good luck to those taking him..... his class was seriously a struggle BUT YOU CAN DO IT!! WORK HARD, LEARN THE MATERIAL, AND DON'T GIVE UPPPPPP

I never took statistics before so I was bit intimidated when I first entered this class, but I will admit that Rein knows how to present the material in an interesting and more simplified manner. However, I basically had to teach myself the material by reading the textbook thoroughly and referring to his notes every once in a while. I think you definitely have to do a lot of your own studying in this class in order to full grasp the material. I studied a lot for this class and during the final, I felt pretty confident in my knowledge and performance. Nonetheless, I was surprised to have gotten a C but I guess it's also because the class is curved. He's kind of strange but a nice person overall.

I have always been very good at stats and I took AP in high school and really enjoyed the class. Professor Rein is absolutely an awful teacher and makes the material ten times harder than it needs to be. His tests are not representative of what the HW or lecture is and he grades completely based off his opinion, which I find extremely unfair. Overall a horrible professor and what ever you do DON'T TAKE STATS 218 with him.

I did not enjoy this class and I do not recommend this teacher. He made the material alot harder than it was.

Mr.Rein is a nice guy but his tests are totally unfair. None of his tests are from the book or the review sheets. I studied for his tests for weeks and weeks before the midterm and I wouldn't pass. It was a waste of time.

Mr. Rein was not there for the students. If you had a simple question he made you feel so dumb for asking it. That frustrates me and it made me not want to put time into a class I had to. His tests were out there and he would put a minor concept on the test and make it worth lots of points. His curve is nice and more than generous but that's about it when it comes to good things from his class.

This is one of those classes where you will learn a lot, but receive a not so wonderful grade. The thing I didn't like about Professor Rein is that he does not prepapre you for the 2 midterms and the final (which is pretty much your whole grade). He assigns homework problems and midterm review problems that are nothing like what he asks on the test. And he will tell you this! He says he wants to "push" his students and see who really wants the "A". That's his reason why he makes his tests impossible. Oh, and I can't forget the Friday quizes. Every Friday there is a quiz and you can only miss one. He REFUSES to let you take it early or late. So if you are sick or need to take off early for the weekend, forget it. He is kind of sarcastic, which made the class a little interesting. Again, you will learn a lot but it is a very difficult course. I think he makes it more difficult than it needs to be.

I think Professor Rein knows his stuff, and he presents it through Powerpoint, which makes it easy to take notes in class. He also puts his notes online, where you can also get practice tests, and midterms from previous quarters. Even though his tests were hard, I learned a lot, and I think I'm prepared for 252. He gives homework thats due every two days, a quiz a week, and groupwork. The homework and groupwork should give you a boost in your grade, so when you do homework, you should always check the answers in the back. Those points can be really helpful if you screw up on a test, which I did. He usually curves the tests, but you just have to be careful because sometimes he puts things on that you wouldn't expect. He gives you a cheat sheet to put whatever you want. The only thing is that you have to keep on top of things to do well, since theres pretty much always something that you need to study for.

Rein was a very difficult teacher...he did not introduce the new material in an easy way to learn. He was soooo fast and i hardly got any of the examples or anything he taught. His tests are very difficult...they are so long that most people didnt even get to finish them all. I am now in 252 and i feel so far behind everyone else. Good luck!

Ok, when I took this class it was my thrid try. The past two times, with Kent Smith and John Walker... were... well crap. I didnt learn anything in those classes and Rein's class was completely different. He uses Minitab for everything which is perfect. Good teach, I actually learned some statictics. If you have failed 252 before or are poor in math like I am take Rein!

He talks really fast and sometimes I would get lost. I thought the material was pretty tough but he really makes class interesting with his sense of humor. I didn't mind going to class because he would never fail to keep me entertained.

This was a very hard class. It is the only math class I have ever gotten a C in and I was praying to pass get that. Steve is a very hard teacher, there is a lot of homework and there is never enough time to finish his exams. He doesn't usually tell you when the quizes are so be prepared! If you participate in this class, go to his office hours, and show him that you really care about his class then you will pass. If you have any questions then you should ask because he will usually clarify so you will understand what he is talking about. If you are having trouble in this class then go to his office hours and explain to him how you feel about the class, he will do his best to help you out.

rein is a good stats teacher. he is funny and is good at explaining the material in different ways if you do not understand the first time. i would recommened rein for stat 252.

I thought Rein was a cool guy. He's enthusiastic about what he teaches and tries to make a boring class like stat interesting. he always listened to our questions and tried to make sure we understood the material. with a hard class like stat that wasn't always possible though. his tests were basically what i expected, not impossible but definately not easy. his class is difficult simply because the material itself is difficult. but overall i liked him and would take him again if i had to take stat again.

He provides lecture notes, (with gaps) so that you can fill them in while he is talking. This is really helpful because I was stuck to my notebook in my last stats class. His labs are very helpful, and you usually do about one every two weeks. There are quizzes, but they are not difficult. Some are surprise quizzes, so to be sure, just show up to class. He was a great teacher who's lectures were fun and interesting considering that it is a stats class. I also went to the workshop which was very helpful.

Overall, Rein was a really good teacher and I would definitely recommend him. He's informal, pretty funny, and a really cool guy. There's only one negative thing I can say about him: during office hours, sometimes when I asked him a question, he would go off topic or explain something for like 20 minutes that I understood in two minutes. But he's a really nice guy and a good teacher. If you can, definitely take him for any class.

I couldn't stand Rein. He's a great stats teacher, but an annoying person. He babbles on about administrative things every day at the beginning of class for 10-15 minutes, asks tons of questions to the class and actually waits to move on with lecture until someone responds, and tells jokes that no one laughs at. As for the class, kind of a lot of work. Biweekly homeworks, weekly labs, quizzes, 3 midterms, a project, and a final. He grades incredibly ticky-tack on the midterms, and I had like a B- throughout the quarter even though I know i knew the material at an A level, but he dings you for the dumbest stuff and writes test questions that are meant to confuse you. The project doesn't take as long as you might think it will, but do well on it since it can really boost your grade. That combined with doing the well on the final must have pushed me up to an A. From a stats perspective, great teacher, but you'll just have to deal with him as a person for a quarter.

Rein sucked! That class material was super hard, and he expected you to know above and beyond what he taught for the midterms and finals. He talks SUPER fast, and goes through the material at the same speed. Going to office hours barely helps. He doesn\'t make things clear or concise. If you have to take him just listen really closely in class at every moment and try to keep up. Be prepared to study your butt off. He wasn\'t very understanding about stuff either and wasn\'t helpful with the group project he assigned.

Most reviews here have concluded that Rein is a good guy and knows the subject. Both are true, but the fact of the matter is that all of the stress that occured during my last quarter in which I took STAT 252 came solely from his class. Class average on our first midterm was a 62 I believe. I know I failed the first midterm and I couldn\'t believe when he said he wasn\'t going to curve the test. After the entire student body shunned him and pushed him, he agreed to make the test worth 1/2 of it\'s weight to our final grade if we do better on the second midterm. I did much better on the second midterm, but it was only because I busted my ass, and I would not say that Professor Rein helped me for that second midterm very much. The main point: The homeworks were straightforward, he was a funny guy, but unfortunately he expected each student to read above and beyond his lectures AND the text, so most of his students didn\'t do too well. I received a B and that was more than I expected to earn in his class.

First off Rein definitely has ADD, but I actually thought that made him entertaining. Anyway, at first I hated the way he taught his class, but after a while I got use to it and liked it. He teaches/introduces you to the material the first day(s) and then you do a lab the next day based on the new material. The lab step by step tells you what to do and how to do it on minitab. I eventually really liked that we \"learned by doing\" He only goes over homework if you specifically ask for it! He also is really smart and knows statistics. You do have a group project too, which is honestly pretty easy, just don\'t procrastinate on it. And for the midterms and final there is a true false portion, so actually understand concepts!

Dr. Rein is a GREAT teacher, although the class is difficult, he does a good job of making the key concepts clear. 252 is not an easy subject and he does a great job of making sure his students understand the material. He may not just hand out A\'s, but I learned a lot this quarter. He lectures and then you do a lab the following day on what he lectured on the day before. There are weekly quizzes that should only improve your grade.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS IDIOT. It is completely impossible to learn anything in this class. The only statistics I\'ve learned all quarter is what I\'ve taught myself through the labs and reading the textbook. His lectures make no sense and he stops lecturing for about ten minutes at a time asking the stupidest questions over and over that have nothing to do with actual statistics. The grading on the midterms is VERY subjective and though you may understand the material,if your wording is slightly off you will not get full points. Overall don\'t take this class unless you want to teach yourself and work way too hard for a grade lower than you deserve.

I actually liked Rein. I think the way he presented the material made class bearable and the labs he assigns helps you learn how to use Minitab so that it is useful. He has a upbeat personality so it's easier to stay awake (compared to Prof Walker I had first quarter). I would say he's a good choice for a stats teacher

FIRST OFF: Rein writes his own polyratings so beware of some of the stuff you read. Second: Rein is a average/good professor though. He gives packets to help teach students a challenging subject. What his biggest flaw is, is that he thinks enjoys giving hard tests. I think thats stupid but he takes pride in the fact that many people do not finish his exams...He offers office hours right after class which IMO is a good idea. Overall i would say he is a B- teacher. I got a C but didnt put any effort in. I find it hard to put effort into classes where the teacher is pompous and rein definitely fits that description

He's a nice guy and all, but I would seriously encourage anyone to stay away from his classes. I mean it, stay away. Very very disorganized, inconsistent and confusing all around. Tests don't reflect the homework whatsoever, and the material is basically self taught from the book.

Rein is an okay professor. He can be very boring and he doesn't convey the material that great, but maybe the material is just challenging. His quizzes and tests are pretty straightforward and as long as you study and know what you're doing, you'll be fine. He is very generous with partial credit, so as a result he does not curve anything. There's a quiz each week and about 3-4 midterms. Do not take this class lightly! The material is pretty difficult after the first two chapters and the textbook is absolutely worthless in explaining the material. On a side note, Steve is hilarious and a great person to talk to! Overall, there may be a better professor out there but Steve Rein is definitely not the worst.

Cool guy but dont pick him for any stats class. I learned way more from the book than i did from going to his lecture, which would be amazing except for the fact that his exams and quizzes are nothing like the homework or book. He does supply you with example exams though. But stay away from taking STAT 312 with him.

You really really should stay clear of this professor. For the first 20-30 mins of class every day, he tries and makes the class laughs at jokes that are irrelevant for the course. His teaching style is disorganized, and his exams don't reflect the material he teaches in class at all. In order to succeed in this class, you have to teach yourself for the most part out of the book. The reason why I got such a terrible grade is for that reason; I did not have the time to be teaching myself. Don't take this professor unless you are fully prepared to teach yourself.

The subject matter was difficult to grasp, considering it was my first time taking stats. The class felt more like a JMP tutorial than a stats course. He tried incorporating it in every lecture, but we hardly every needed to use it. HW assignments were graded pretty harshly on correctness, rather than completion. He also missed about 8 lectures and expected the class to still finish the material by the end of the quarter. He missed 3 of those lectures during dead week and still expected us to know the material for the final. I can't blame him for being sick, but it's absurd to miss that many lectures.

For 313 this professor did a fine job. He made stats interesting and was always ready to answer student

Not the best professor if you can take the class with another professor I'd say take that one instead. He isn't terrible just the way he talks (the way he formulates and structures his sentences are just confusing). Then he makes the test just like that as well. He's a cool guy and if you are ever confused he's good at explaining but as far as the lecture and exam questions you have to make sure you read them carefully and try and understand what he's saying/what he's asking on an exam. I dont think anyone in my class got an A so be wary of that as well.

Dr. Rein was definitely an above average professor. He is definitely a strange/goofy person. He is extremely approachable and if you go to office hours he will work with you until you understand it completely. He tries to connect with the students, and sometimes it can come off a bit odd, but it comes from a good place. This class was by no means difficult. It is not a crazy workload and he lectures to note packets. There is no confusion what will be on the exams, he makes it very clear. I showed up to almost no classes and only studied the day before the exam for a few hours and got a B on every test. Had I put in more time/effort (I had a big workload that quarter) it would not have been very hard to bump my grade up to an A. I recommend Rein, he is a good professor and if you show up to class it's an easy A. (He also has some very interesting music recommendations for you)

Professor Rein is a good statitics teacher. He is hard, but I think that's just because the material is hard. He does his best to help you learn though.

I don't know where to start. My first complaint about Rein is his lack of attention to questions students have. For example, you'd ask a question and I don't think he EVER went through a problem start to finish...he'd always say "I'll set you up to tackle it" but would never do it completely. Often he'd do the easy parts and the parts I had trouble with, he wouldn't even touch on. It drove me nuts! He was also really sarcastic - one day he told us he had stuff to do so he wanted to get the class "over with" and I was like, "What the hell!?!? You're paid to be here and I'm paying to be here, so do you damn job!" I was pretty offended...like, if I had to suffer through his class, he should have to suffer, too. At least after he got sick for two days in a row he didn't give us those impossible quizzes (which he only gave us like 10 minutes for - nobody ever finished!). I went to his office hours once and he was soooo unhelpful I never went back. Pretty much, if you get stuck with Rein I'm so sorry, and all I can tell you is study your @$$ off and pray for the best. I don't know how I got a B in the class, because I don't think I learned a single thing. I'm dreading Stat322 cuz my foundation in Stats, if I even have one (?!?!), is shaky at best. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

He makes really bad jokes over and over. The same ones everyday too. He asks rhetorical questions, then wont continue on until at least half the class answers him. It gets really annoying, but I prefer it over a monotone professor. His quizes are pointless. He never even passed them back to let you see what you got. He allowed ten minutes for a 20-25 minute quiz. The toughest things about this class though is that the material is really tough. I think he did a good job of presenting it in an interesting way. His tests were really hard, but he gives practice exams that help a lot. It is not easy to get a good grade, you just have to do your best with the homework, and really understand the practice exams. I think he did a good job overall, and he was willing to help if you asked him.

Not only does this professor not fully answer questions asked of him in class, he lectures fast, and administers extremely difficult tests which he claims are based on the homework, however, having worked through all the problems, I can attest that there is at best a vague resemblence to the questions, and this is a generous statement. Admittedly, he is a very knowledgeable statistician, however, he doesnot have the ability to communicate the material whatsoever effectively to the students. Reading this, you have a few options: 1) you can ignore this warning and discover for yourself, 2) be forced to take him as a last resort to any other option, or 3) trust that this review and the many others are not coincidentally in the same boat, rather Steven Rein is a knowledgeable statistician yet an incompetent professor and one would be wise to avoid him.

Rein is a nice guy, though his sense of humor gets old. He is willing to help during office hours however it was hard as his grader didn't return any of the hw or quizzes except for like the first two. Mid-terms are tough, but fair.

I like Steve. Hes the kind of guy you'd want to go get a beer with and shoot the shit. Anyhow, his class is not very difficult. He recognizes the complication of his exams and the material and grades accordingly. His lectures are very well done in my opinion and I learned the material well enough for the tests. I did not need to teach myself anything in this class ... he explained every concept he tested us on very well.

A fairly good teacher. There are no excuses when it comes to learning the material. He gives you access to prior exams and answers to study from. The HW is relevant and lecture is adequate. People who like their (educational) hand held will not like this class, nor college for that matter. You will have to task yourself with this material, but he explains it clearly enough that even a person who is fairly bad at math can pass his 321 class (me).

Dr. Rein is a cool guy. He try's to make the class really interesting by asking questions that are usually yes/no answers. The material is really easy to comprehend if you go to class every day.

Dr. Rein is very friendly and likes to answer questions and encourages students to come to his office hours. But as the quarter went on I quickly realized that he is unable to clearly present the material. Many classmates thought the same and we all felt lost as a whole. Lectures felt like a discussion about statistics rather than concepts being explained and broken down. I believe you can benefit from Dr. Rein's teaching style is if you teach yourself the concepts and then discuss it with him. If you're into that I recommend taking him. There are weekly hw assignments, some pop quizzes, and (2) 50 min exams. The exams are difficult and only a few students were able to finish. Dr. Rein is cool but I would never take a class with him again.

I had Rein for both 321 and 322 and thought he did a great job

I liked Rein a lot, he presented the material very clearly, always willing to help in office hours and by email, and all this with 4 kids... pretty impressive guy. Get into the material and you'll be fine. Listens to you in class and tells corny but calming jokes.

Spends too much time showing us his "slick" R-code and talking through his hands like a megaphone. His labs are helpful in explaining concepts but the majority of the lectures are him using R to show us algebraic and matrix proofs for equations that he thinks are cool but don't really help you on the exams. Overall, doesn't do a great job teaching concepts in class although he is a good guy and helpful in office hours.

One thing you guys should realize is that he has no control over getting the homework graded on time. He hired a grader and it's the grader's fault for not returning the homework in a timely manner. He does talk fast so you have to pay attention in class and ask questions. He responds to email. I find that asking the question in class is better than office hours because in class everyone gets to hear the question and answer. He also answers the question a lot slower. A lot of this class was self-taught. The book acts more as a reference guide for all the procedures in the class, but it's still at a slower pace than the lecture. The tests are heavily focused on concepts (he gives you all necessary output). A bit of advice... know your linear algebra. It came up on every test. I think if I didn't have real interest in this subject matter (regression) I would have done a lot worse in the class. Using R isn't for everyone, but that was the main program he used in class.

Rein makes lectures interesting with his jokes and he does a pretty decent job lecturing. While he does explain things very well, they are often hard to follow as he shoves down a ton of info in just a few minutes. He is especially helpful in office hours and is patient with students. Homework load is reasonable and very helpful to understand the lectures. Tests are not too bad, but the final was really tough. Overall, the biggest problem with him is that his lectures go too fast even though he does a good job explaining things.

Steve Rein is not the best teacher, but he organizes the course in a way that students can pass. This man though is straight comedy. You ask him a question, and he responds with a long story that has little to do with the question. He shows up everyday wearing no shoes and a shirt from $6shirts.com and provides a very laid back environment which is just what I needed in a 4-6 class on my busiest day. Unfortunately he missed the second half of the quarter to an illness, so I had to give this man a good review

Let me say that Dr. Rein is an intelligent man who is able to clearly convey the course material. I'm very proud to know such a professor. He presents a wealth of relevant and interesting examples. He uses different software packages so that all of us can use what we are most comfortable with. He's very available with office hours, and he always keeps us up-to-date with course material on his website. Highly recommended for STAT 418 - he knows what he's talking about!

Dr. Rein is such a fun guy. He keeps the class entertained and its one of the few classes which usually goes by quickly. We had 3 "midterms", a final project (in a group of 3), and homeworks collected about once a week. Funny thing is we never got our 3rd midterm back, or the last 3-4 homeworks. His grader quit on him or something.. Anyway, rein is great in office hours (even though its so messy!). He really knows his stuff and you do use R a lot in the course but usually its just copy/paste his code. Notes were a little disorganized and scattered. Lectures were at times confusing so make sure to read the book. If you have to study for a midterm it's usually best to read the book rather than the notes you took in class, but if you have time review both with an emphasis on the book.. We were allowed 1 sheet of notes (one side) on each of the 3 midterms which really helped for formulas and other intricacies. Overall hes a really fun guy, gets a little behind on grading, but makes up for that with his enthusiasm and jokes! Hes not as bad as his polyrating says. He just teaches a lot of business stat classes who think everything should be easy.

this guy is a bad teacher. He might be knowing many things, but of no use to students. He has an air of arrogance around him. He has a special ability to make simple things confusing. If a student goes during his office hours to ask a question, he makes everything very confusing. His tests are OK, but he assigns too many points to least important qustions, which means, if you make a small mistake, you lose points. He is not a helpful teacher. His classes are a waste of time!!!!!
