She is a very inexperienced teacher. She is at least five minutes late to every class and wastes a ton of time writing down every word she says. I wouldn't take her for Econ 222. Her grading scale is easy, a 35 was a D and an 80 was an A. There isn't much homework You have to buy an expensive book that she doesn't teach from, instead she teaches like you already understand the material. She knows economics but she has a problem communicating her ideas. Take another teacher.

She is not a good teacher and you really don't learn much in the class. On our first midterm, the class average was a 49%. She makes you buy an expensive soft cover book that she doesn't even teach out of. She normally comes to class late and never has papers corrected in time.

Miss Payan is a very nervous person. She seems only a inch away from a total nervous breakdown. She has a touch of despiration and sickness in her laugh. Despite whatever problems she might be facing elsewhere, I can't ignore the fact that she is a complete and total abomination of a teacher. She seems like all she want to do is play a really boring game of 20 questions with the class where she has the answers and she wants you to guess at them for 2 hours. During the course she changed her syllabus 4 times. I think this says it all. She can't make a plan and stick with it. She is constantly second-guessing herself. She knows economics, but can't relay the information. Miss. Payan if your reading this, find another job. Please. We'll be happier and more importantly so will you.

All her tests come from lectures which are rushed and unclear. Then she will teach you one thing in a lecture, put it on the test and completely contradict her own lecture. Test questions are vague but she wants specific answers. She gets attitude with all her students. People get so frustrated they walk out of class. Do not take this class!

Payan knows her economics, and automatically assumes that everyone in the class does as well. She is the WORST teacher i've EVER had at cal poly.. (and i had thought mottman was kinda sucky..he's a cake walk!!!!) she trys to cram too much stuff into a lecture and end up talking fasterthan the micromachine man. and then, when someone asks her to repeat what she said or clarify something, she insults them telling them they "need to keep up" or maybe if they "were smart enough and did the reading and paid attention, they'd already know it." she is constantly insulting her students when they care enough to speak up. she has 8 quizzes across the quarter which are pretty impossible alhough someone based off the lecture... but she gives NO partial credit. therefore, if you have a series of 8 graphs and you're translating and make one mistake on the first one and did the rest of it correctly, you just earned yourself a fail on the quiz. on multiple choice short answer questions, she's vague expects you to "assume" things in one case, but not assume things in other cases, and then if you try to explain something to her, she gets incredibly defensive, to a point where people will leave rather than listen to her. econ's not the most exciting major in the world, but this really makes you want to switch to basket weaving... avoid her at all costs.

Professor Payan, if she is a professor, should not be teaching this class. She may know about Econ and have work experience, but she lacks all of the tools to relay this information to students. She does not handle questions well, is rude when you ask questions, and talks too fast so nobody could understand what she was trying to get across. I don't understand how she still has a job on this campus since I have read what other students have posted on this page. Her tests are unfair and not based on what she teaches. On top of this she expects the class to make the same assumptions that she does when she writes a question and leaves out valuable information, and as far as she is concerned, a question can only be interpreted one way.....HER WAY! I truly feel that I have wasted my time and money on taking this course because I have learned nothing about the subject of Macroeconomics. Even if you have no other choice but to take her, STAY ANOTHER QUARTER and avoid this woman. Trust me, it will be worth the money.

Smart, but has no idea how to educate or communicate effectively. Ms. Payan does not give you the big picture, spends far too much time talking about inconsequential details and is generally inconsistent with the book she requires. If you have to take her, don't buy the book, but please, do yourself a favor and pick another professor.

Payan is honestly one of the worst teachers i've ever experienced. She constantly contradicts herself, is late, insults her students, doesn't recognize any problems her students have, and makes no effort to help her students. she doesn't do anything to translate the information into real life, tangible examples. her final was awful, people walked out without finishing it, ripped it up, and literally cried. (one guy left the room screaming at the top of his lungs how ridiculous it was and that she should go to hell....) i had a fail going into the final and managed to pull a b-, but i don't feel that i learned ANYTHING from this course, other than i'm never taking another class from her. if you want a frustrating course in which you don't really learn anything, try taking a class from her. you may want to sit in on a class by her, just to laugh at how ridiculous her and her ghetto-fab wig are. and if you do happen to get stuck with her, just pray for the curve.

Taking this class was my first horrible college experience. I think my 7 year old cousin is more intelligent than Payan. She can't answer questions in calss at all, and then she gets mad and insults everyone when we dont understand her long bullshit answers. Don't take her class.

Professor Payan was pretty horrible. She wasted a lot of time writing needless stuff on the board. She was unable to answer questions from the students. A lot of people basically left the class because it got so bad. I would not take her again! Even though I got a better grade than I expected, save yourself and don't take her.

Prof. Payan is by far the worst teacher I have ever had! She has no idea what she is talking about and spends the first half hour of every class handing out papers. She is rude and belittling when you ask her questions about material. She put questions on our final that covered material she "didn't teach us" but "try and figure it out anyway" she says. Avoid her class like the plague, and maybe God will smile on the students of Cal Poly and she will be thrown out on her ass.

I don't know what everyone else is talking about. It is true, Payan is a little wird and sometimes quirky, but she knows a lot about Econ, and presents it well. There are a lot of notes, but she will not move on to another concept until she is sure everyone understands. I recommend her.

I know that this has been said a lot on this site, but Payan is really, honest to God, the absolute worst teacher I've ever had. She fails at explaining concepts and then gets offended when you ask her questions. When the time came to fill out evaluations and she left the classroom our whole class just started laughing because we could finally express our feelings about her. Save yourself the torture, DO NOT, under any cirumstances take her class. One of my classmates was seriously considering changing out of her Econ major beause of this woman. As for the people who gave her good ratings (assuming she didn't put those there herself), she does like to play favorites, so that is probably where those came from.

Everything that the other evaluations have said about this teacher are completly true. She SUCKS!!!!! She couldnt' teach her way out of a paper bag!!! She constatnly contridicts herself and when you ask questions to clarify the subject matter she just gets an attitude. If you can help it don't take her. If you are one of the unlucky people, like myself, who get stuck with her my best advise is dont' ask questions... she get's pissed when you do... so save yourself the trouble.

Be ready to take notes! Professor Payan goes through the lecture very quickly. She also does not grade homework problems so it is hard to see if you understand the concepts or not. She encourages people to ask questions so it is a good class for people who like to speak up. She is new to teaching and I think her classes will get better as she gains more experience.

This teacher is one of the most inefficient teachers I've had. She openly admits she doesn't want to do any extra work for us, so that explains the lack of presentation. You constantly re-draw complicated graphs and recopy defintions she could easily put in a book of notes for you. I can't count the number of times she turned her back and the students would just laugh at her. Her class maybe could be ok if she concentrated on certain improvements. I would not recommend her AT ALL, and if the econ dept hires her as a full time teacher, they are retarded! i could do better...

Professor Payan is extremely knowledgable in the field of economics. Her strong academic background coupled with diverse work experience is extremely valuable. She is very friendly and helpful during office hours. Yes, there where a lot of notes to take but most of it WAS from the required textbook. I highly recommend taking her for International Trade!

One of the worst teachers i have had. very unfriendly and likes to pick on students. she comes off as a bitch and does a horrible job at teaching. I spent on average 12 hours a week studying for this course and it only got me a B. This is the second time i have taken a course from her and she was horrible both times. I honestly learned nothing in that class. I would not recommend taking her unless you want a long and miserable quarter.

Heh, what a circus this class was. Payan has very solid knowledge of the subject matter, but it all seems directly memorized from a book, if you ask a question that hasn't been covered in the books she memorized she's clueless. Her teaching style is poor in that she can't always convey her ideas in an understandable fashion and she constantly does things that make you and your classmates laugh at her. She made so many dumb blonde comments thoughout the course that I had to write some down: 1. "I'm just so glad that my mom never married my dad." 2. On failing to properly explain indifference curves: "I didn't convince you but you can't let them cross." 3. "I know I didn't explain that very well." 4. "That other guy--Cathrine Zeta Jones." 5. "I don't read the teacher evaluations. I read them one time, but then. . .I had to drink." There are many more, but this is an evaluation, not an essay. Imortant points to note: 1. Almost the whole class is just shifting demand and supply curves. First with trade, then with trade and tariffs, than with quotas, then with subsidies. Its kinda the same thing over and over again so shouldn't be too hard. 2. You dont learn real life applications to, or examples of the theories, just the theories themselves. 3. She will amaze you with her stupidity, but you can still learn. 4. You can ridicule her from your chair in front of the whole class and she wont even realize you're doing it 5. All though ridiculous and frustrating at times, have fun with her, be vocal in class to get her to say more absurd comments, and make fun of her with your friends.

I'm the same guy who wrote the big eval below, but wanted to add that I never opened my book and only studied before tests. Its a pretty easy class because her tests are based off her notes, theres only like 5 1hr homework assignments, and the material you learn is almost all just shifting a few lines in different directions on the same 3 graphs.

The worst teacher I've had at Poly! She talks a mile a minute with her back to the class while explaining complicated graphs. She had to curve 2 midterms about 15% because everyone did that poorly! Although the curve does help, I didn't learn one thing in this class. Her lectures are long and boring. Don't take her!

The main problem with Payan is that she is COMPLETELY disorganized. For some lame reason, she writes down every single thing she says, either on the board with one of her millions of pieces of colored chalk, or on an overhead. But about half of it is pointless. It seems like if she just spent some time making some powerpoint slides, or even some overheads, her whole class would go a whole lot more smoothly. Also, she tests on portions of the textbook which she never goes over in class, making it hard to tell when you're reading what is important and what isn't. She's also sort of rude in the way she interacts with her students, referring to people by their last names, or by pointing and saying "You." I would not recommend her unless econ comes real easy for you, and you don't mind reading.

Payan was very well prepared for each lecture which made it easy for students to follow her. Although, she is a bit random at times, she is a fair grader, allows for extra credit, give partial credit, and cares about her students. She is weird and writes down on the board EXACTLY what she says, but she is a good prof. for this course.

Prof. Payan is the worst teacher I have ever had! She has no idea of what she is talking about in class. The worst thing is she jamed a lot in the last one and a half class before the final week and basically that was 1/2 of the final questions coming from. She doesn't keep her office hours and of course she doesn't reply your email. I just hope she will be thrown out of CalPoly soon.

I would just like to say that Payan is the worst teacher I have ever had. She writes everything on the board at top speed, and doesn't even wait for people to finish coping before she erases. Her tests are incredible hard. Before the test, she would hand out a paper and not even cover it, and it would be on the test. She was never ready to teach a class, and she was mean to people in class when then did not know the answer. I would never take a class from her again. By the way, she wears a wig that looks like something died on her head. It is very funny at first, but then it just gets nasty. I would not recommend her to anyone!

I would also like to say that Payan is the worst teacher I have ever had. Some people just say this about anyone, but she really is the WORST teacher I've ever had on any level. Someone below wrote this- "She writes everything on the board at top speed, and doesn't even wait for people to finish coping before she erases. Her tests are incredibly hard." So true. She seemed like she had never taught a class before in her life. She'd ask the students questions and then treat them badly, even though the reason they couldn't answer her questions was because she couldn't properly convey the info in the first place! I would never take a class from her again either. Don't make the mistake of taking her just because the timeslot fits into your schedule.

I'm not sure what I got yet, but I'm sure it's around a B(hopefully). Anyways, I've read some of the evaluations here and I think they've been pretty harsh. Yes, she does push out a lot of notes, but she doesn't rush concepts...most of the notes are based on clarifying one concept. She does have a tendency to lose people with her answers, but if you really give them a listen, they make sense, are correct, and precise...is she suppose to reiterate throughout the quarter something you should've learned in 222 or 221? Most of the time she knows the answers to students questions. I would have to admit though that she is suited for the ECON students since her classes (I had 401 and now 405 with her) require a good base of econ and deriving graphs. She's better than most of the econ professors and is friendly. Shoot, I've been here 5 years people, I've had the worst, she's not one of them.
