His accent sometimes make his lectures difficult to understand. The grading is pretty fair, it sucks that the final is worth 40 out of the 100 pts possible. Stuff like quizzes and essays are only worth 5 pts which really doesn't represent the work I put into them. The good part is that 80+ pts gets you an A. He also hands out lecture outlines so you don't have to do much reading, except before a test or quiz. The questions from his study guides are exactly the same ones on the tests. Take Oriji(say it as fast as you can) cause he rules!

The class is not that hard. One difficulty is the heavy accent. It was hard for me to understand him most of the time. I finally just went to class to get the lecture guides and study guides and just left.

Dr. Oriji was a very good teacher. He took basic matierial and expanded it with his knowledge. He is from Nigeria so he does have and accent and is hard to understand at times but he knows that he does so he makes sure to talk slowly so everyone can understand.

Prof Oriji is a really nice guy, not a great professor. The grading was based off of a presentation and multichoice tests. I disagree with his grading and testing policies: his multichoice tests are based off of the most obscure and minutely detailed information he covered - you don't learn anything from the tests other than that you weren't able to decipher what he wanted for the answer. For the presentation (and written report) I recieved a grade less than I had been expecting simply because I didn't talk about what he wanted me to talk about - this was after I went to office hours and confirmed that my topic and area of coverage was appropriate to the topic. If he wanted me to talk about another aspect of my topic he could have easily told me to concentrate on the other area and I would have gladly done it. His lectures are often confusing and filled with useless information. I can't recommend taking him, but he's not gonna break you either.

Although Oriji isn't the worst teacher I've ever had, he ranks right down there. You see, I come to college to learn. I don't come to college to be able to pass a class with a 40. Honestly, an educated guesser could pass the class with his grading scale. Everything is scantron except the paper and oral presentation. Basically, if I did the paper and oral presentation, took both quizes, the midterm, and the final, and did not go to one other day of class, I probably could have passed it. I'm a relatively disciplined person, though, so I did not ditch any class, but I was bored stiff and easily could have without missing much. I didn't learn anything about the Theoretical Evolution of the Modern Political Economy (said in a thick Nigerian accent), but I did learn some stuff about world trade, world hunger, and some other ethical issues which gave me something to think about. In short, if you actually want to learn, don't take him, if you want to pass easily, take him, and watch out for "numbah b."

There isn't really any homework for the class except for one group project, but you have to read to learn anything because the lectures are so uneducational and scattered. Unfortunately, the books are also increadibly boring and nearly impossible to read, and the tests are difficult. One good thing though is that the tests have two parts, and for the second one you get to choose to write an essay or just continue with more multiple choice. He is a really nice guy, but as a teacher he stinks.

Considering this was a Gen. Ed., I was expecting rather little, as far as intelligence and interest--and boy did I get it. Oriji himself is a really nice guy, with a rather difficult accent (west African). However, the class is really just a bunch of bleeding-heart propaganda and semi-interesting historical information that adds up to a guaranteed snoozer at 2 o'clock in the afternoon (or most any other time, for that matter). It's a pretty easy grade to make, if you try...but therein lies the problem.

I ended up dropping this class about 2-3 weeks in (on the Drop deadline no less!). I have NEVER dropped a class after it began, nor do I plan on doing it again, but I made the right choice in this case. The only things I could concentrate on while I was there: 1)Oriji's animatronic movements that reminded me of a Disneyland-style theme ride that never ended, and 2)whether or not a pair of dimes would fit into his oversized nostrils. I realize how immature that sounds but concentrating on the lectures was impossible. He spoke slowly in an attempt to clairify his accent (which you honestly start to understand fluently in time) but it just made listening even more difficult. He seemed to be a genuinely nice man with a lot to teach but it just didn't work out. With so many other ways to fulfill this GE, why not go with a sure bet (like Quinney, Wilson, or Detweiler) and leave Oriji to the die-hard history buffs.

I simply could not understand anything he said the entire quarter. I got a C and that was with several hours of studying before the tests and quizzes. He is boring and very monotoned. He like he really knows what he is talking about and I'm sure he could be an amazing teacher... if only you could hear anything he was saying through his THICK accent. If you really aren't that interested in History, DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!

oriji is a nice man but should not be teaching a class with so many big words in it. Its basically a seveth grade history class. I don't think we ever stopped to talk about any of the material. His teaching style is to present the material, briefly ,if that, talk about it(if you can understand his heavy heavy nigerian accent), then he has these hard tests on readings that don't even connect to the material. I would tell anyone not to get this teacher besides the fact of the lack of tests.

Dr. Oriji is a brilliant man. That being said, he is a horrible teacher. If you are set on taking a history class, you would do well to look elsewhere. Even after taking this class, I have yet to discover the point of the class. There are many negatives and no positives to taking this class with this instructor; the course is absolutely irredeemable. Dr. Oriji is very unorganized. His notes are aimless streams of thought, if you can even call them notes. He sometimes supplies handouts, but they are of little help, offering generally no information. When he does write on the board, it

The very long description perfectly describes what goes on in Oriji's class. I have never been so stressed about a class as I was in this class. At first I was so worried that I didn't understand his accent but you know, once you hit your head into the wall a couple times it starts making sense. The whole class was a random assortment of facts which were supposed to support topics that Oriji scattered around in no particular order. I feel bad because Oriji is a nice guy, at the end of the year he even invited you to stay with his family at his house in Nairobi. It is just impossible to group together the facts from the notes in class but the worst is the readings. Oriji expects you to understand old texts about economics which are incredibly boring and incomprehensible. There are even essays by Alexander Hamilton in which each sentence is a paragraph long. Take my advice, NEVER think about joining this class. It is not something that you can cruise by with a C in. It is a grueling, torturous class and it is not for anyone trying to knock out their GE requirement. SERIOUSLY, DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS BY ORIJI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow. This guy barely speaks English. He rambles on about absolutely nothing and none of it ties together. He writes random words on the board which, of course, have little to do with the lecture. He is hilarious to listen to though. To this day I swear he was saying voodoo-alism. If you use the study guides THOROUGHLY you'll do fine. The upshot is, if you end up in Africa, you've got a place to stay. Bottom line: Take a different D2 if at all possible, its kind of a waste of time.

His class is easy if you do the reading, if you don't, then this class will be like the epitome of all hells in every religion. Dr. Oriji is a very patient, kind, knowledgable professor. You may be turned away at first by his accent, but if you actually go to class and pay attention, you'll see that you won't even recognize it after awhile. He always tries to make class fun by joking around with his students and he really does care and does want his students to do well. His class is super easy, he designs it so that it is nearly impossible to fail...he really just wants his students to do well! So far I've taken two classes with him (213 and 215) and got A's in both...he is more than fair when it comes to grading and making up work!

You can never understand a word that comes out of this guy’s mouth, you never know what is going on in class because he is SO disorganized, and when you ask questions he does not answer them because he doesn’t understand English! Obviously Oriji is hard to understand, and there seems to be only a few students in every class that can understand everything he\'s trying to teach. But from the beginning of the quarter he tells the class that he\'s curving our overall grade almost 10%. That makes up for his strong accent (which the worst part of it is his misplaced accented syllables, like ec-o-NOM-y). Also, the final and midterm/quizzes are almost entirely based off of readings which aren\'t that bad. I thought I was going to get a C in the class but the awesome curve put me at a B+.

Honestly, it isn\'t that bad. The first day you\'ll show up and be like, Oh shit what is this guy saying?! and then you\'ll get used to it and not really even notice it. Theres a group project, two reading quiz\'s, a midterm and a final. and he gives you study guides for every quiz and test with EXACTLY what you need to know...you just have to find it in the readings/notes. He gives you printed notes, too. It really isn\'t hard. THE CURVE IS ALSO HUGE!! a 55 is passing with a C-. Oriji is a really nice guy and it was nice to get a different perspective on things. He wants his students to do well. Take this class.

On his accent: So, if you can\'t understand English in anything other than the standard American accent, and by that I mean, you have a difficult time understanding UK accents, Southern, New York, Boston, etc. (meaning you have no idea what they are saying), then you will have a difficult time understanding him. If you have no problem understanding those accents, you won\'t have a problem understanding him. I feel like I was one of the few people in class who could understand 99.9% of what he was saying. Maybe its because I\'m used to hearing English spoken in different accents, or just paid attention to what he was saying. On the class in general: Like everyone below/above has said, the class is relatively easy, huge curve, gives you study guides outlining exactly what is on the test. I mean, I got 100% plus the extra credit on the second midterm, (my only 100% so far in college, I am not smart, nor a history/liberal arts major mind you) so it definitely is not hard at all. He is also extremely nice, as he let me take the final in his office even though I woke up half an hour late and everyone else was finished. :) (Okay, so there was this really annoying student in the class that I absolutely loathed, and assumed other students loathed as well. He was so unbelievably pretentious and self-righteous that it took every ounce of self control for me not punch him in the face every time he opened his mouth.)

So I'm a history major and I went into this class thinking that all the bad reviews on here were probably just people that didn't care about history. But to be honest, a lot of them are true. Oriji is a really nice guy and makes cute jokes about going to parties, but he is honestly pretty difficult to understand and doesn't present material in the most clear manner. ORIJI..............is OK. There aren't many other ways to explain him as a teacher. However, he is a really nice guy who will help you with stuff if you need. He just gets on these random rants in class about nothing related to the topic and pretty much sucks up class time. I went everyday just because I felt guilty not going but honestly you really don't have to go to his class to do well. He gives you a study guide before every test and quiz which is literally the questions to the test. And his accent is one of the most frustrating things ever.

While he was a nice person Oriji was mainly incompetent as a professor and I was very dissapointed with his class. His lectures were vauge at best but his tests asked very specific questions on them so I spent most of the quarter attempting to decifer what I needed to know. Thank goodness for the reading, while boring at times many of the test question were taken verbatim from the text making them easy points. This MOFO is a must take. First of all, if you get a 55% in the class, its really a C- because of his curve. The group presentation is easy as 2 dollar whore and you get a good grade no matter what. All of this brotha's test and quizzes are scantron, which is chill so you really don't have to pay attention. I actually probably went to 5 classes all year and its four days a week. In have of those, I left right after the quiz was completed. If you take another history of different GE area than one of his classes then you are stupid. During test, he puts his glasses on and falls asleep i think. Dude is a gangster. I went to his office hours one time because I needed a study guide for the test the next day and he asked what class i was because I never went to class, I told him that I usually have work during the class period and he gave me one lol.

This class was a joke. There is no doubt, Oriji is difficult to understand. If you really focus, you can mange to get the general message, but if you are semi listening or tend to space out, it becomes gibberish. On the bright side, the class isn't very hard. He hands out study guides before every exam that covers what is going to be on the tests, and they are pretty accurate. However, on his test and quizzes, 60% or more of the questions are structured as follows: A. red, B. blue, C. green, D. B and C, E: all of the above. This was extremely frustrating and tricky, and chances are if you didn't study thoroughly, you will be stuck between two answers. And with your luck, your going to get it wrong. Yes you. You will do a group presentation that includes a speech, outline, and essay; pretty easy though. Furthermore, his grading scale will benefit you. An A- is an 85%, a B+ is an 80%, an so fourth. Overall, personality wise, the guy is awesome. At first you may be cynical about his teaching habits and accent, but by the end of the class you'll either end up loving the guy or haven't been to class enough to form an opinion. Goodluck!

First off, Oriji is a very knowledgable man who could teach anyone whose willing to learn tons of information. However the fact that it is hard to understand him makes some of the information hard to get. He gives review sheets before each quiz, the midterm and the final. You can get away with never going to class, getting the review sheets and reading the book. The review says that certain questions will be from lecture but you can find them in the book. The best part of Oriji's class is his grading scale- The whole class is out of 100 pts. and his scale is 90-100 A, 85 A-, 75 B, 65 C+, 55 C-...you need to get a 35 to get an F. If this occurs in this class you don't deserve to be in college and you should quite wasting your parents money! I got a B and i didn't do shit. If you want a non-challenging super easy class, take this class. It felt like we covered very little because of his slow lecturing pace and the 3 weeks in class doing group projects were WASTED because they were boring, uneducational, and half the class ditched anyways. One group presentation takes up the WHOLE day, so if you don't want to stay in class, he doesn't penalize you. I thought I would enjoy the class and get something out of it, but it disappointed me greatly. All you have to do to study for each test is answer each question on his study guides, study the answers, and read the assigned sections which is very little reading. I hate to say it, but I wouldn't recommend this teacher. Really nice, smart guy, but not a good teacher. His notes that he handed out were unintelligible and didn't help much. The book was really broad and general, didn't go over dates or specific happenings but he tested us on that type of stuff. Don't bother buying the book he wrote, if you do take his class. Just know the Igbo liked yams alot. The fact that he has an accent isn't really what gets in the way, it's the fact that he goes verrrry very slowly and never really explains anything. The grading scale is easy, and he gives a detailed list of the sylabus at the beggining of the year. The book has everything, and before quizzes and tests he gives you a study guide that basically has the questions and where they are in the reading. Everything he says is straight from the reading. This guy says he learned english in England, but most couldn't understand him enough to even catch that. He speaks like an African, meaning you can't understand him. His lectures will make you come down with narcolepsy, and that's assuming you go. Usually his lectures consist of him going, "yes, speak up, come on, tell us what you think." as if anyone were listening to him in the first place. As for the tests: HE WILL TEST YOU ON MATERIAL THAT IS NOT ASSIGNED IN THE SYLLABUS. which is another thing that pisses me off about this guy. Oriji is a pretty cool guy. He has a pretty thick Nigerian accent, but you get used to it the first week of class, and it's not too hard to understand him. He has a really easy grading curve. He passes out an outline of everything that is supposed to be on the test, but there are usually a few quesions on material not covered in the outline, so make sure you read the entire chapter, not just what is on the test outline. You have to do a group presentation. It doesn't really have anything to do with the material in the class. you just present on any topic that you want. make sure you get a good group or it will suck. i had a bunch of no talent ass-clowns in my group. None of them knew how to do citations for any of their sources (even though oriji's sylibus showed EXACTLY how to do this), so they just didn't to them at all. One student couldn't even spell correctly (no clue how he even got in to this school). Anyway, the group project brought me down from an A to a B. I realized after taking this course I didn't really learn anything. The basic outline of the course is that you come to class and wait for him to arrive a minute late with a stack of unorganized papers that are not even used for that lecture. He then proceeds to either hand out a outline that makes no sense and provides no necessary information. He then begins lecturing on the outline by writing RANDOM words at RANDOM angles that are barely legible on the board which make no sense a day later. The good thing is that he gives you detailed outlines for the tests, however when he goes over them in class, he merely just reads it. The tests and quizzes are really hard and specific and there are only 100 points possible, however you only need 85 points to get an A-. Overall I would try to take a different instructor.

Seriously, I didn't understand him at all, just a few emphasized words now and then but that's keeping in mind when I actually went to class. Literally went about 25% of the time. Oriji is a nice guy, he smiles the whole time while he lectures. Apparently he tells jokes, too, but sadly I missed every one he said because of his accent. He would write random words on the board, gives us unorganized outlines, and invite us to his house for African Parties. I never went, but he promised palm wine. If you're good with accents, then maybe you should take this class. I don't know if he's actually a good lecturer because I never understood any of his lectures, but he's a big advocate for Aftica... and palm wine. He loves the stuff.

I don't recommend taking any class by Oriji. He doesn't listen to you and his accent is very difficult to understand. My main beef came in the this group project that we had to do. The group had to produce a group essay and the reference method is something called "Chicago Manual Style". Oriji does not know what an endnote is. Long story short: He is disorganized and inconsistent which will drive any organized person, who desires structure and consistency, completely nuts. The most important thing to look for in a professor is the ease in which you can communicate with them and clarify things. Don't expect clarification or ease of communication with Oriji. NIce guy, but that doesn't make up for his incompetence.

DO NOT TAKE DR. ORIJI! Try to find a way around it! His accent is absolutely horrendous!!!! Before I took the class I read polyratings, and it didn't seem like his accent would be that big of a deal. But it is! I seriously can't understand a word he says. He knows a lot about history but too bad I can't learn a darn thing if I don't understand him! He's a nice guy and all and can be understanding at times, but if you have him you'll end up spending twice the amount of time you normally would on the class trying to study out of the book since you couldn't understand the lecture. The main book he uses (F & R) is pretty easy reading (which is definitely a good thing for his class) which is probably the only positive thing about Oriji's course.

In reading these reviews, I notice that what I find most helpful is a general idea of assignments, tests, quizzes, etc. So here goes: You will have a total of 3 quizzes which are very tricky and wordy BUT he'll give you a study guide for each one. Use this study guide like a bible and answer every question on it (hidden in the books or lecture notes) and you'll do fine. The midterm was like the quizzes only longer and you'll get another great study guide. Don't write the optional essay (rather than 30 mc unless you're a really confident writer). He grades fairly generously on the group projects. Overall: his accent is difficult, but he knows that and so he enunciates very slowly and it's easy to pick up. You should go to every class for lecture notes (try and pick up on key words and certain events) and do the reading. You'll get an A.

This class was probably the biggest waste of time ever. Very easy B or A by reading the book and lecture notes. The only point in ever attending any of his classes is to get the handouts, he lectures off them word for word and both versions will put you to sleep. Upside to his class is that it is literally impossible to fail when each grade is curved to 15% (A 85-100, B 70-85, C 55-70 etc). Oh yea, DONT BUY HIS BOOK! There is 2 questions on it on the first quiz and thats it.

Dr. Oriji is truly a nice man and he is eager that the students learn. The three quizzes are worded in such a manger that one is never sure what the real answer is that he wants. Get the study guides and live with them and look up everything on the guides. The midterm is a longer version of the quiz. The group project will be a pain in the ass unless you have a good group (he assigns the group members), or you are prepared to take the lead and do the whole project yourself. His grading is crazy. Nice guy but freakin' hard to understand. Literally. He's got a thick accent and I understood about every five words he was trying to say. He pronounces a lot of words funny but you sort of learn what he is trying to say. I really did not get anything out of his lectures. Learned solely from the book. I suggest not buying his book.. Don't really need it. However, the great thing about this class is 55 out of 100 total points is equal to a C-. I didn't do too hot on the quizzes and still ended up with a C+. Probably one of the most pointless classes I have taken here at Cal Poly. I know a lot of people claim that going to class is a waste of time, but in the case of this class, you gain absolutely nothing by attending class. Its weird that its a comparative world history class yet all you pretty much learn about is Africa and his own culture. He makes you buy his book that has nothing important in it and that only acounts for 3/4 of a 1 point in the entire class, you did not read that wrong, there only 3 questios on one of the quizes which comes to equal 3/4 of a point. So that leaves me to wonder, why are we buying this book, could it be becuase he wrote it and is just tring to make money? hmmmmmmmm Avoid this class, you will not learn anything. I still wonder why I am paying thousands of dollars here at Cal Poly for instruction like this... way to go POLY!!!! Maybe try listening to you students evaluations...

Oriji is a pretty cool guy and a unique experience as a professor. He does give you a great idea of what will be on the tests, but test questions can still be a little dubious and strange even if you study. Like others have said, final grades can be strange too. I'm pretty sure I had a solid A and received an A-. He seems to have an extremely generous grading scale and curves all tests generously, but somehow this won't necessarily translate to the final grade you expect. His lectures are alright, and the outlines he gives you make up for his scattered style and writing whatever he pleases scattered around the board. The funniest thing is when he asks the class a question, saying that you are at an interview and if you can answer what, for example, the Berlin Conference did, you get the job. Then if you answer correctly, "you get the job." So random.

Professor Oriji is a decent professor. The class is not too challenging and especially good if you are just looking for a general History class that teaches you the basics without going too far in depth... He has a really thick Nigerian accent, but if you sit up front and go to class pretty regularly, you should be fine getting used to it. Then, once group projects start, you can subtly leave class without it affecting anything as he doesn't test you on group projects (which last like 2 weeks). I ended up getting low B's/C's on all the midterms and quizzes, but because the curve is so high, I pulled an A- in the course. Decent class, such a cute professor! He even invited us all to Nigeria with him to his hometown if we ever want to see the real Africa. :)

Someone below stated that as long as you can understand various versions of English (British, Southern, NY, etc), you should be fine. WRONG. I really had no idea what Dr. Oriji was saying about 60-70% of the time, BUT if you do the reading ahead of time, you will recognize little snips of information here and there. Overall he's a nice guy and he gives pretty easy tests and quizzes. The week before, he will give you a study guide that pretty much tells you exactly what each section of the test/quiz will ask you. Most of the stuff will be from the reading, but some will be from the lecture notes that he hands out. These notes are seriously the most vague notes known to man, and I had a hard time writing additional information on them because I spent most of the time trying to understand his accent, not the content of his lecture. All that said, I won't say NOT to take the class with Dr. Oriji, but if you have other options, I would say choose them first.

Dr. Oriji's lecture is very simple and straight forward if you pay attention and go to class. He provides outlines and summaries for almost every chapter discussed in lecture. His grading scale is also extremely lenient. For example, an 85% is still an A-. The only complaint I had was his thick accent. Many times I had to tune out everything else just to vaguely understand what he was saying. Other than that, his class is pretty easy with 1 midterm, a few quizzes, several homework assignments, and a group project/ presentation. I put little effort into the class and got a B+ so I'm pretty sure most people can get A's.

Oriji, cool dude, not such a great teacher. The accent is the least of your problems BTW. You will get use to it in 3 days. No his problem is silence. He has the material, he knows what to say, but he is to damn quite. Even with a microphone you can barely hear this guy. And yes the accent doesn't help, but like I said you'll get use to it. But all that aside, he is a cool guy. Cracks jokes about his daughters getting married and his past is pretty interesting too. Grading scale 55% get's you a C-. So he knows history is hard for some people. He is helpful during office hours too. Take him if you want an easy ride I guess, but not if you want to learn. -IF66

To be honest, when I read the polyratings, I didn't think it would be too bad, especially after having a professor with a 0.65 on here last quarter. Turns out Yang was better than Oriji. I did well in this class, but only because I read the book. DO THE READINGS. They aren't necessarily short, but are somewhat interesting and are the only way you will learn. His accent is damn near impossible to understand, and to be honest it seems like he was never instructed on how to properly lecture or even teach. I know I sound like some bitter idiot who didn't put any work in and who is blaming the professor for it, but that is not the case: I got an A.
