any of you who are talking shit about tom neuhaus are ridiculously spoiled little piece of shit californians. this guy is the smartest guy you will ever meet and you can't even recognize how dedicated and passionate he is. your education is completely pointless if you can't even notice when you have a good professor. WAKE UP. he is so smart and has done more than you will ever do. good luck in life kiddos.

fun lab and fun lecture! BUT they totally don't correspond to the tests. questions on the tests are random. people who didn't buy the book did better than me in the class. i felt like i was doing a constant guessing game on the scantrons and i went to class and read the books. he also is a man who loves to himself talk, so be prepared. sometimes you're in the mood for it, sometimes you're not.

This class is fun. Dr. Neuhaus is very entertaining. His tests are very resonable, especially since he even gives study guides. It is very important not to miss lab, since many points can be lost for not attending.

Dr. Neuhaus is a funny professor, if not at times a bit scatterbrained. He makes jokes as often as he can when explainging important concepts and applies them to his life. ("I used to work in a bakery in Texas called the FBI- the Fun Baking Institute.") The labs are cool because you get to eat and often take home what you make- from chocolate chip cookies to ravioli to trout almandine. He gives two midterms and a final and offers the option of getting the midterm answers to study for the final. DO THIS!!! His final was a cut and paste of the previous 2 midterms, so if you memorize the correct answers from the two tests, you can easily ace the final. AND, he drops the lowest of your 3 test grades.

The lectures were interesting, the labs were tons of fun and the tests were easy. I was warned that the tests were hard, but I didn't study and got good grades. There are two midterms and one final and the lowest grade is dropped. I missed lecture a lot but kept up in the reading. This class is definitley easy to pass, and one of the funnest classes at Cal Poly.

This guy is one babbling psycho! He is the king of rambling and hardly makes any sense at all. His tests are just like his lectures and books... RANDOM and SENSELESS! I would study all of my class notes and make tons of flash cards and then the questions on the tests would have absolutely nothing to do with what we studied in class! The only way I was able to get such a good grade was to study my friend's (who had already taken the class) past exams (since he is too lazy to make all new tests, the old ones were nearly identical). I have to admit that the lab part (cooking) was pretty decent. We made restaurant quality dishes and it was a nice contrast to the rest of my week. So if you like cooking and can handle his horrible teaching skills, then take the class, but if not.... STAY AWAY!

The lecture for this class is horrible...I fell asleep more times than I stayed awake. Lab, however, is very fun and you make really good food and actually learn to cook as well. Dr. Neuhaus is extremely brilliant but doesn't know how to convey all of the information that he knows and expects his students to know for the midterms. The midterms are impossible but the final is the easiest final you will ever take at Cal Poly...during finals week go in and copy the midterm answers during his office hours, the final is cut and paste, word for word of the 2 midterms...good luck!

wow.. talk about the most boring lecture class ever. Nuehaus is a smart and well imformed teacher but struggles at relaying the information back to the class. The lab was fun each week, but the lectures were to to point were Id rather kill myself than go. Dont bother buying the books, if you dont read a single page of the books youll be fine. Print out the lecture outline before each class and use that to study, and with that the tests are duable. Nueahaus is a nice and brillant teacher, but because its hard to stay awake in the boring leactures, the material is hard to learn. There is 2 midterms and a final, with no homework.

Lab tastes good. Lectuer is to the point. He has a little of the mad scientist eccentric syndrome, but a nice guy. There are 2 midterms and a cummulative final, which is comprised of the exact same questions as the previous midterms. No hw. There are also a lot of good looking women in the class, I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Dr. Neuhaus is awesome! He's a bit crazy at times, but he's sooo entertaining, especially in lab, he is so much fun to watch! The lecture is pretty boring most days (I fell asleep in every class) he goes off on these random tangents and you never really know what exactly to write down, but do go to class and take notes. DON'T BUY THE BOOK!! Waste of $$ Just copy the slides from his web site so you don't waste your time writing it down in class then just write what he says about it.

He is a pretty easy teacher. you don't need the book because he wrote them and he says everything that is tested on in his lectures. They are good for a bit of clarification, but odds are you will not open the book if you get it. He is really insane, though, and his lectures get pretty boring, even though I didn't, I saw many of my fellow classmates asleep during that lecture. The labs time is not budgeted well, so I woiuldn't recommend taking a class right after the lab.

This class was ridiculous! I found a lot of the material to be very interesting. Neuhaus throws in a lot of interesting facts, but he is all over the place! He constantly flips past slides on his powerpoint cause he changes his mind about whether or not he is going to show them. He also starts going off about stuff and then he'll change slides and realize that he covered the next three already and flips through them while you sit there wondering how much of the necessary information you got. The tests are really what make this class ridiculous. No matter how much you study you are most likely going to be guessing on most of the answers. If you bomb the two midterms the lab and the final will save you. The final is the same questions from the midterm and you can go and copy them all down before the test and it takes about 15 min to memorize them...but what do you really learn by doing that? Nothing!

Neuhaus is a great professor, and he keeps the class laughing with his offbeat humor and clever insights. Make sure you attend class, as he includes material presented in lecture that's not in the book or in the slides. Exams are straightforward, multiple choice, and pretty much come directly off of the study guide.

an very boring teacher for a very hard class. i hated every second of this class. if you like pessimistic and generally crazy people you will like this teacher. he talks a lot about stuff he knows nothing about. and he acts like he knows a whole lot about it. this class sucks, take something else for your GE

Neuhaus is a very entertaining teacher. Be careful about 250, though, it's about culture, not nutrition. This suprised me. His tests are really hard, but the final has exactly the same questions and he'll let you see them so the final is really easy. The essay is the hardest part of the class, but if you start early it won't be too hard.

He's an okay guy by himself, but he is incredibly boring to listen to for two hours. The class itself is boring, and Neuhaus doesn't really do much to make it more interesting. He goes off on tangents about his own experiences which might be interesting to some, but weren't to me. He's also a hypocrite. He says not to make absolute comments, yet constantly does it. He is very firm in his own beliefs and will only just barely acknowledge it when students disagree with him in class. Also, he has a reader which you have to buy, which contains photocopies of a couple dozen essays, etc. that pertain to the class, which is not only incredibly boring, but the bookstore won't buy it back. If you take this class, I suggest trying another teacher.

DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO!!! it sounded so great and fun in the course description, but trust me, this class was a nightmare. neuhaus was boring, confusing, and his lecture material was worthless. everyone in my class hated this guy...i'm not even going to go into his grading policy...it doesn't matter, because the point is that his class sucked, and even he knew it. he was 15 minutes late to the final, and did not even bother giving us class evaluaions to fill out after the final, which shows how much he knew the class blew. don't do it, please.

Out of his mind, goes on about everything except what is going to be on the test. He rambles all lecture so they are worthless. However, if you read, take his quizzes, use the study guides for the midterms, and the final is a breeze ull get an easy A. I only got a B cause I didnt read or go to class.

Neuhaus' lectures can be interesting if you like history. this is not a nutrition class, but a cultures class. there are two midterms and a final. He allows you to go in office hours and copy questions from midterms because he takes all questions from the two midterms and puts them on the final. I got 100% on the final because i did that. If you want an easy class take this one. I wouldnt even bother buying the book, just listen in class when he goes over the reading. quizzes dont count for much

I enjoyed this course. Neuhaus is an interesting professor if you can understand his personality. Some dislike him because of his randomness, but if you can look beyond that, there's an extremely smart, funny, interesting professor there. He is very approachable and desires for you as the student to succeed. He has a lot of good information, you just have to be willing to learn it.

Buckle your seat belt your in for a wild ride, Dr. Neuhaus is completely crazy, I hated every second I was in this pointless class. He makes you read stories that are sometimes only loosely related to food, he barely touches the subject of nutrition, all you learn about is culture, but really only his take on that culture, he goes off on tangents about how he hates the government and what is wrong with society, he also often writes things on the board tells you they are important but they are not on his tests. The also loves to explain French words that have nothing to do with what he is attempting to teach us

This course was absolutely amazing! Dr. Neuhaus is so interesting and intelligent, he has alot of life experience and has been all around the world. Alot of people complain that his class doesn't touch on nutrition (especially the nutrition majors), but I am a bio major who LOVES history and learning about different cultures so I really enjoyed this course. My best advice would be to go to class everyday and do the readings every night because he gives quizzes on the readings practically every class. His midterms are intense, but he curves them so it's not too bad. His final is really easy considering he gives you all the answers before hand. Be ready to give Dr. Neuhaus your undivided attention because he does jump around alot and he sometimes adds random questions on his midterms that he may have mentioned while he was going off on a tangent. As long as you work hard, you are sure to get a good grade in this course! I highly recommend Dr. Neuhaus for FSN 250!

Ok first of all this class is pretty easy if you go, and that is a big if, because he is intolerable to listen to. He is totally biased, if you are at all a conservative you will hate this guy by the end of each lecture. There is not 2 sides to every story with this guy, just the liberal side. He bashes the school, the government, and everything he doesn't believe in. DO NOT TAKE HIM. Basically all I learned is that we will be under water in 30 years, so I don't even know why I'm going to class anyway. As Al Gore would say, "What an inconvenient waste of time"!

I am throughly disappointed in Cal Poly for allowing this man to teach. It's true that his lectures are unstructured and bias. More importantly, he tends to go on long irrelevant tangents which causes him to forget certain important parts of the class lecture. Since there is no text book or other sources on what he is lecturing there is no way to make up the lost information. The required readings are often over 30 pages and the quizzes relating to them are worded based on opinion rather than fact. To get a good grade you have to be able to tell the difference the facts that you read (wrong) and what Tom Neuhaus believes (correct.) Aside from being a terrible terribly unorganized lecturer, he doesn't offer his students the respect and professionalism they deserve. Tom Neuhaus is a disgrace and embarrassment to the school. I would avoid his class if at all possible, it is a complete waste of time--Unless you'd enjoy listening to bias, one sided, unsupported, unorganized, and incorrect rants and ravings of a mad man.

I have never hated a class or a teacher as much as I hated FSN250 and Thomas Neuhaus. His lectures are hard to follow because he jumps all over the place. He goes off on unneccisary material that is unrelated to the course in any way. For example, one day he strayed from African Cuisine and some how ended up talking about Titanic the movie and the actual event for thirty five minutes. I wanted to throw tomatoes. Seriously. He's extremely unorganized and just plain annoying to have to sit through. Do not take his class...Even if you have to wait a quarter for another teacher, just avoid him at ALL costs.

I wish I would have never taken him. This class is the worst I have had at Poly. His lectures are boring and ridiculous. He goes off topic the whole time and just talks about places he has been and random facts that end up on the test. He gives you a ton of reading and then quizzes almost everyday which are impossible even if you took the time to do all the boring reading. I put a ton of time and effort into this class and still didn't end up with a good grade. The only thing I learned from this class was to never ever take him again. Worst teacher at Poly.

Avoid this teacher! He doesn't know how to teach. The class consists of him showing off slide shows of countries and places he's been. He talks very little about relevant material pertaining to the class. His tests include topics that he didn't get around to talking about (which are also not in the text). The few times he did tap into topics that he was suppose to be lecturing on he spoke merely of his opinion and had little to know facts to back his words up. I agreed with his opinion the majority of the time but I was frustrated that he didn't have sources or facts to go along side it. CalPoly really should audit its teachers to avoid mistakes like Neuhaus from occurring.

I absolutely loved this professor! No doubt about it, his class is a little bit of a roller coaster ride, but who doesn't love a great side story. If you can't see the wealth of information, passion, insight, and comedy he has to provide than go to someone else's hohum class describing the custom of tea time in England. He's been everywhere, done everything, and you can't do all that without eccentricities. I would take this class for no credit just to hear his ridiculous stories. Plus he brings food to class for you to try. Easy to pass, just make sure you actually take some notes while you laugh.

I took this as a GE, and it was exactly what a GE course should be--interesting with no excessive work. There is one written assignment for the whole quarter, and it is very much personal observation of eating habits. Neuhaus said there would be more quizzes than there were, but the few quizzes we had were fairly easy. This is one of those classes where, if you put in the time to do the readings, you will have few problems. Neuhaus does seem to go off topic a lot during lecture, but everything he says is in some way pertinent to the overall topic of the course, if not that individual day.

Dr. Neuhaus's class was very frustrating and sometimes seemed like a waste of time. However, he has so many cool travel experiences that he talks about in class that make it sort of interesting. He is biased, to say the least, and don't be surprised if quiz/test questions are based on his opinions (which is why you should go to class even if it seems like a waste of time!). He doesn't tell you what days quizzes will be, so just always try to go to class. Quizzes are short but annoying because they are pretty detailed and sometimes his opinions. If ever in doubt on a midterm, choose all of the above! go to office hours and study the 2 midterms because the final is VERY similar to those... many questions were word-for-word from one of the midterms! This is one class that you really should do the reading. It's sometimes long but i definitely would not have managed an A if i didn't do it.

Warning: It really helps to have an open mind with this teacher. He is a brilliant man that will share more knowledge with you in one quarter than 10 teachers combined. An A is not easy, but it is definately possible.Lectures, book, and tests go hand in hand because he wrote the book. Final was a combination of first two tests which helped the grade out tremendously. Show up to class prepared, show up to lab with close-toed shoes and proper attire- he notices.Lectures cover all material in class and anything else that is on his mind- sometimes he is all over the place, but it is accurate, scientific, information and more people need to apppreciate teachers that share their knowledge like him.

The depth, breadth and beauty I learned from this professor was exceptional. He gave out the recipe to make your own alcohol fermented from strawberries, White Lightning. Then followed it up with a long story about the Catholic Diocese who divided the world in half and let the Portugese settle in one area and the Spanish in the other. Unrelated you say? Well obviously you aren't using your critical thinking skills son. Everyone ferments fruit into booze. It's called wine, kids. And after that there is food. And food creates culture. After a long period of time there is history with a focus on the meshing of culture. Get it? Just like fermentation. culture. fermnetation. dig it? It all goes together like Peanut Butter Jelly Time. So pull your head out of your wranglers and listen to this brilliant man teach you about life. Attend class, eloquently express your own thoughts and opinions on quizzes, listen, absorb and listen some more. A+++++++ and then some.
