Mueller is a ver nice teacher. The class only consists of needed and relevant material. The lectures only dip into the homework problems and sometimes leave you hanging without examples. The next day in class, though, he goes over most of the problems that the students ask for with complete explanation. Every homework assingment is due two days later and it turned in by a flip of the coin. There are two big tests with one give-me question, but otherwise the questions are rather difficult if math is not your thing. The final is two hours worth of questions with an emphasis on the last chapter. Also, a sheet of paper can be used on the final with anything you want on it.

Mr. Mueller is one of the best professor I have ever had. He made sure everyone felt comfortable coming to them if they ever had any trouble. He went over everything in class in detail. His sense of humor made class pleasant. Homework was not overwhelming. I would definitly recommend him to someone who has difficulty understanding math.

WOW!!!!!! "Is it time for fun with math?" THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN' ABOUT! I was so lucky that I got this guy as a professor. "Why?" CAUSE HE SPEAKS OUR LANGUAGE!!!!! Dr. Mueller doesn't get all mathmatical on you. His lectures are very straight forward, organized, and EXTREMELY easy to understand. And even if you do have a question, he will never make you feel like an idiot; if anything, he'll make you look brilliant! Also, I need to emphasize how very compassionate he is and how willing he is to help you. The guy will bend over backwards for you, you just gotta take the initiative. He is, by far, the best professor I have ever had at Cal Poly and I've been here for 3 years! Nobody compares! TAKE HIS SECTION, I'm willing to bet that it will be one of the best decisions you will ever make in your college carrer.

This professor is the best you can get. He explains math so clearly that when you go to do your homework you already know exactly what to do. He has a fair amount of homework and determines if it will be collected or not by a toss of a coin. He does have quizes every Friday but he drops one so its ok if you miss one. Every problem on his quizes are from the homework. He gives you a thorough study guide, if you can do all those problems than you have mastered the test. He answers all questions in class and is even willing to take the entire class period if need be. He jokes can be corny at times but he is seriously the best professor. He makes understanding math pretty easy! If you have a chance take him! Everyone that I know that has ever had him thinks he is the best in the school!

Ok, YES, I did get a D, but not cause the class was hard, just cause I am so mathematically challenged you won't believe it (or maybe you will). Prof. Mueller is THE best math teacher at Poly, all the evaluations before mine that say that...believe it. We need more math teachers like him. He conducts all his classes about the same, with coin tosses for hw, etc. What I want to add is that if you fail a test or think you're not going to pass, he will want to help you in every way possible so that you will pass his class AND learn what you need to. He is faithfully at every office hour on time, and if you fail a test or just want to go over it with him, he will actually schedule a meeting JUST FOR YOU. D is barely passing, but I wouldn't have even gotten that had I not taken him. If math is not your strong subject, take Mueller! He's a nice guy and a whole qtr. of math won't seem so long. There's hardly any math theory crap unlike some of those other profs' classes too, which makes things understandable. Looks like it's time for fun with math!

If you've read the other reviews, believe them! Dr. Mueller is a great professor, and this was the best math class I have ever had. His approach makes the lectures not only understandable, but interesting. Somehow, even though he spent at least half of every day helping the class with homework questions he was still able to stay on track with the material. We had trouble with his grader, who may have known less math than those reading this, but when there was a problem he would look over the question and regrade if appropriate. Going to his office hours didn't only help with the questions we had, they helped with stuff I hadn't even thought of yet. I have never had a professor this good. "It's time for fun with math," so take his class.

Prof. Mueller is the BEST teacher you'll ever have!! A lot of people here at Poly have taken Calc in highschool and I'd never done so, yet Jim was able to provide clear lectures with LOTS of examples. He didn't expect we knew everything, like many teachers tend to do. In our class he happened to give a REALLY hard mid-term and realized it, so he used a HUGE curve. Most teachers would just say, "Oh, sucks for you," but Jim realized he'd expected too much of us 141 students and so compensated. He's so friendly and I frequented his office hours, and EVERY time it helped me understand the material better and better. He's able to communicate really complex ideas on a simple level, and relate things to real life so you can put it into context. No matter what you have to do to get into his class, DO IT! It's worth all the trouble and more. I wish I could have him for 142 but unfortunately for me he's not teaching it this quarter...If you need to go on in Calc Jim will prepare you, but expect a lot of work. It's not a cake-walk, but well worth the time and effort.

He slowed down when we had trouble and always had study guides with pratice problems. 3 tests total and the second one was the hardest. I think I got a C, but with the curve, I got an A. DO NOT TAKE HNRS 142 PERIOD. Although Mueller was a nice, amicable guy and all, he got too far ahead of himself thinking that honors students can do math at his level and have no problem with it. He assigned tons of homework problems that delt with theory and applications and whatnot (problems at the end of the section) so that you wouldn't understand the basic principles of a section before being asked to perform the impossible. Think about just taking regular 142 instead.

Got a C+ in Honors 142, took a regular section of 143 and got an A. His tests are almost impossible, even with a study guide. I was able to do almost all of the study guide, got to the test, and could only do a 3 problems the whole way through, and barely manage a few others. It is honors, and students should be challenged - but not the way he does it. You could obviously tell he was good at what he was doing, but the theory behind doesn't help, and there were some homeworks where I could do about half of the problems. Sure, he goes over them and has a lot of office hours, but the tests were just plain hard. I admit, I was fooled by his good ratings. I really wish I never would have taken his class, no matter how nice he is.

Jim comes with my highest recommendation. My favorite professor here at Cal Poly, hands down. He presents material very clearly and he can teach it to you very well. He considers it an honor to teach his students and is sincerely committed to their success. I know this because he spends the majority of his lecture time doing problems that we had trouble with from the previous homework assignment. He takes the time and effort to get to know each of his students individually. Going to his office hours is not only helpful, but also a great way to know one of the friendlier professors here. The homework prepares you well enough for the midterms; I say "well enough" because they're usually slightly too long and there will often be one difficult problem out of the seven or eight, but he curves generously enough to compensate, so it's hardly a concern. He frequently tells math jokes, which are really corny, but they make you laugh, so it makes the lectures enjoyable. He also likes to talk about his beekeeping and talk about some of the history of the school, which is really interesting, although it can sometime detract from valuable class time. Simply put, there are too many good things for me to say about Jim. If you can, take his class without hesitation.

What's most amazing about this overall wearing giant is his friendly attitude. He is by far the easiest teacher to approach if your having some trouble, he strongly encourages his students to come to his office hours (which happen 4 times a week) and if you can't make one of those four times, he'll happily make time out of his own schedule to fit your needs. Professor Mueller cares about his students, explains things clearly during class, and is helpful during office hours. His tests are very difficult and really force you to know the material well, which is fine. The only problem I have with Mueller's grading is that he doesn't take into account that he is teaching an honors course, where everyone is extremely smart when he curves at the end. Mueller says that he'll give grades in the same percentages as the math dept averages, but this is not fair because if we were all in normal classes we'd be getting higher grades because we'd be well above the averages. On the upside, there is almost nothing you can do to get below a C- if you're working hard. Most poeple seem to get B's.

Awesome teacher!! Presents the material very clearly. Knows his stuff very well, but is still able to explain it. Periodically asks class if he needs to clarify anything; answers questions fully and clearly. Explains concepts then backs up with examples. Prepares a study guide for both mideterms and final (also set up a review session for final on a weekend). Cares A LOT about his students and how well they are understanding the material. Never cancelled a class or furloughed because he \"values our education to much for that.\" If you\'re ever confused, go to office hours, he is happy to explain stuff again. Doesn\'t make you feel dumb even if it is a stupid question. Every once in a while gets off on a tangent about this or that cool thing behind a concept we\'re learning. However they\'re always interesting and give a better understanding of that particular idea. TAKE MUELLER!!!!

Jim is one of the best professors I\'ve had in my college career, which is saying a lot since CalPoly is the third University and the fourth college I\'ve attended. Jim is very easygoing, wears overalls every day, and is capable of explaining difficult concepts in a way that is easy to understand. Homework is collected every class based on a coin toss. Last quarter we had thirteen tails in a row, meaning home work wasn\'t collected! To do well in his class, though, you will need to practice enough that you actually understand the material. This class is not easy, and practice is key...mathletics! Jim does not give away grades. He is a very fair grader and gives credit weighted heavily towards understanding of the concepts, meaning he will not dock you half the points for a missing negative sign, etc. I highly recommend any math class taught by Dr. Mueller.

Jim is seriously the nicest guy you will ever meet. He\'s extremely understanding if you need extra help on homework or clarification as to what you did wrong on tests and never makes you feel stupid. His notes are thorough, and he\'s constantly presenting you with multiple ways to solve problems, which is super awesome. He\'s probably the best math teacher I\'ve ever had and I\'d recommend him to everyone. He makes you love math, and calculus a little bit more.

Jim is absolutely the best professor I\'ve ever had. He makes all the problems seem incredibly simple and easily understandable. He\'s very helpful, allowing you to ask questions on any homework problem during class, and if he doesn\'t get a chance to answer it during the class, he\'ll help you in his office hours. He assigns homework every day, and it\'s definitely harder than high school math homework, but it\'s still not terrible. The homework is due two class meetings after it was assigned (Tuesday\'s homework is due Friday for a MTRF class). On the day that the homework is due, he flips a coin to determine whether he\'ll collect the homework. Tests are fairly difficult, but he applies a pretty heavy curve if the class did poorly. On our second midterm the curve was A: 84-100, B: 70-83, and C: 52-69. Overall, he\'s an excellent teacher and I would highly recommend him to anyone who gets the chance to take a class with him.

Prof. Mueller is without question the best professor that has ever been. I had him for an honors class which made the course much harder than average, but he is more than fair and provides an immense amount of help for any who need it. He is fun and entertaining in class and his lectures are flawless. He is completely consistent throughout the quarter and no matter how hard the class gets, he is there to fall back on if you are really struggling. Jim is simply one of the best professors at Cal Poly! Do not let my grade deceive how awesome he is, that is entirely my fault. I came into his honors class after having the same math teacher in high school for two consecutive years, and wouldn't think that I would be able to get attached to Jim, but his sweetness, fair grading, thorough lectures, and flexible planning won me over. I am taking him now for Calculus III Honors and have no regrets, so much that I am sacrificing a class next quarter just to stick with his class. Being in honors calculus, the course is intense, and the difficulty of the problems range from medium to headache, which clearly shows on exams, but he does an awesome job at recognizing difficulties and takes a curve to prevent anyone from failing. If there is any way that you can take his classes, take them!

If you get into this class it means that you were invited, period. So that must mean that this is a pretty special class, it is, after all honors level calculus. As a rebuttal to the evaluation below, honors level students SHOULD be able to do math at this level, which is, unlike that person's claim, quite a ways below Jim's level. The point of honors classes like this one is to challenge all the students and stretch their limits, and that means giving the harder problems for homework, he gives less than 20 problems for homework, which is pretty managable, and he is open for questions during class, after class and at office hrs. Granted you should not be in this course if you aren't adept at math, but he covers all the basics of each section and then some during lecture and even if you miss lecture he'll be glad to explain during office hrs or even give you a photocopy of his notes for that day. If you want a truely excellent professor, take Professor Mueller's class!

Jim Mueller was the best math teacher I've ever had, hands down. He was definitely a teacher for the students. It was an honors class, and like said below, he moved quickly. Even with his fast pace though, he always asked the class if they were ok with what he was teaching, whether he should explain more, or move on. If you thought he moved at an unaccomadating pace, you should not have been in the class in the first place, the whole reason for honors was so that he could move quickly without needing to retell the basics or overexplain anything. I've had him every quarter at cal poly, and I'm going to be taking my last class with him next quarter. I HIGHLY recommend taking his class, if he lets you in.

Mueller is by far the best math teacher I have ever had. He is brilliant but he is still able to explain complicated topics clearly. If you go to office hours he will help you work through example problems, even completing the smallest of steps on paper. He then gives you the papers when you leave so you can see step by step how to tackle that topic. His grading is very fair--he does curve things, although only slightly because this was an honors class with a lot of smart kids. His tests are easy to do well on if you prepare properly--a majority of the problems on each midterm and final are similar to the practice exam packets and homework which he assigns. For the final, he gives you both sides of an 8.5 by 11 piece of paper for a cheat sheet. Take him if you can!!!!

Mueller really is a good teacher, and as long as you do the homework and do the study guides you should be able to understand everything. If not, he is very helpful in his office hours, which I would recommend going to, especially the ones before tests. He grades everything on a curve, which can help, but the tough part about his class is that if the 400 points your grade consists of, 150 comes from the final, 100 from the first midterm, and 100 for the second, so if you bomb a test it's hard to recover. Knowing this, I think I'll do better the next time I have Jim.

Professor Mueller is the type of professor who likes to make friends with his students, which may or may not bother you. He's a fabulous instructor and always makes things perfectly clear during lecture. He doesn't assign dozens of repetitive problems, only the meaningful ones, which is great when you're swamped with other homework. The only complaint I had was that he's an applied mathematician, so he kind of skipped over a lot of theory in favor of practical applications. Plus he was late to class every day, so some of the homework involved concepts we hadn't discussed yet. He also wasted an insane amount of time telling stupid jokes and going off on vapid tangents, EVERY DAY. But he does curve the tests generously. I would recommend him because he's truly an awesome instructor, once he shuts up and actually teaches.

Mueller is a very nice guy. But, he spends so much time trying to be nice that he wastes about 10-20 minutes of class. But, he knows math very well and can cover the material thoroughly. He only gives you two midterms and a final. For some, 2 midterms is perfect, not too many tests. But for me, 2 midterms was not enough. He collects homework, but there are no supplemental quizzes. So your sole grade depends on the 2 midterms and the final. I wish that he gave quizzes or more midterms or someway to redeem yourself if you fucked up once. Another thing is that he makes the tests fair, but tough. Remember: you are in a class with a few very smart students, and Mueller needs to make the tests hard enough to challenge them. So, do not yawn before tests - always be prepared. Mueller will teach you well. Just ask a lot of questions and never get behind.

Best math prof I've had. I got a C because I fell behind a few times but luckily for me he reviews homework enough for me to grasp everything. The two midterms and final are a challenge but not impossible. Honestly, if I was wasn't taking such a heavy load this quarter, with Muellers very impressive lecture ability, I would have gotten an A in this class. No joke, if you've ever thought that math lectures were a waste of time, Mueller might just change your mind. People knock him because of tangents, etc. but there are WAY worse profs. Some like to hear themselves talk, Mueller tells stories that he thinks we'll find interesting. About 85% of them are too, so don't make that your reason for skipping this guy.

BEST math professor at Cal Poly!!! If you have the chance to take him - do it! He is one of the most inspirational people I have ever known. He holds many office hours and it works great if you go once a week because he gives so much help with homework questions. He also gave me guidance on how to register for math classes for next quatrer. He offers past students all the help they can handle, even if they aren't in his class at the present time. The tests are straightforward and come mostly from the review sheet. Homework doen't take up too much time, but is a good way to learn the material. He grades the tests on a curve and the final has some questions similar to the midterms. I wish that he'll teach one of math math classes in the future.

Great teacher. I based my schedule around taking Mueller because of his high Polyratings and I don't regret it. Homework is graded by picking 5 representative problems and scoring them 0 points for no attempt, 1 for a failed attempt, and 2 for perfect. He drops the two lowest homework grades, and there is a day lag between the time homework is collected and assigned, so homework can be reviewed in class the day before it is collected. My advice is to always get all the problems right on your homework; it will help you out a little if you bomb one of the tests. There is homework every night except during dead week. Mueller has an excellent teaching ability and keeps his lectures interesting. He tried to not go off on tangents because people have complained about that, but I wish he would have more. I found the tangents the most interesting parts of the class. Mueller is an applied mathematician and it shows. When we were superficially covering an advanced topic in class, he would mention other courses you could take if you wanted to study that topic in more detail; I found that helpful, I'm almost considering taking some of the courses and maybe even persuing a math major. Helpful during office hours. He'll work out a problem and let you keep the sheet. And he held a Sunday night study session for both of his Math-143 sections. You could either attend the "early show" or "late show"...he didn't mind...I thought that was cool to have the opportunity but didn't take advantage of it. Overall, Mueller wasn't what I expected, but he lived up to his reputation.

Mueller was sort of a frustrating professor for 143. I'd learned 90% of the material in high school so I sort of checked out for the class, but it made me crazy to sit through that lecture every day because he made it me feel stupid. He would stand in front of the class and clarify things that people should have learned in math 141, like the simplest little derivative stuff like the power rule. Half the time I was actually paying attention, I wanted to just scream "DUH!!!!! We ALL know this!!!!!!!!! THAT'S WHY WE'RE IN THIS CLASS!!!!!" He was a really nice guy, but I don't think that I would choose him again. Don't be too scared to take his class, but you won't like him if you learn quickly and get frustrated when people assume you don't know anything. I cannot begin to explain how much I love Professor Mueller. He is a total character. He's a big guy who wears overalls and a baseball cap every day, uses a pocket watch, and speaks with a Wisconsin accent. He has plenty of office hours during which you can drop by for help, and the true gift Professor Mueller has is his uncanny ability to answer questions in such a way that you understand the answer perfectly. I took the honors 143 and 241 (Calc III and IV) from Jim, and he was incredibly helpful throughout the year. The only criticisms I have of him are that he often gets onto off topic (albeit interesting) subjects during lecture, and as such, the last two weeks of class we played catch up. Also, if you ask him a question, expect to have all of math theory explained to you in the context of the problem. Unlike other calculus professors, Dr. Mueller does collect and grade homework (for correctness). If you are diligent about homework this can be a significant grade booster, but failure to devote at least an hour to doing homework assignments every night can really hurt your grade at the end of the quarter.

Overall class difficulty: Dr. Mueller's clear and concise lectures and reasonable tests make getting a passing grade in this class relatively easy. I'm generally pretty skeptical to believe too much of what I read on PolyRatings since the reviews here are sometimes gross exaggerations (whether they be good or bad) but Professor Mueller is definitely one of the top three if not the best teacher Ive had in my short time here. He provided really helpful handouts for some of the lessons to supplement the lecture notes. Additionally, he also held extra office hours during finals week and even took the time to arrange a study session on the Saturday before the final (non-mandatory). Be sure to study the practice handouts he gives out before each exam. For a math class, his his lectures were fairly enjoyable, and his grading is pretty fair. Mueller is the best math teacher I've ever had in my entire life, and trust me, I've had more than my share of math teachers over the years.... I just barely passed MATH 141 with a D-, and really had almost given up in Calculus when I was enrolled in his class. I didn't know how to do anything except for basic (and I mean basic like the derivative of x squared is 2x) differentiation and nothing else, but it was all good in Mueller's class. Every day, I felt like an even bigger genius because I finally was understanding calculus! He made every class time worth it, was always availabe for questions, and went more than out of his way to help everyone. He is really like a big 'ol overall wearing scruffy Santa Claus. He has this system of having homework due two days after it was assigned, and he always always always does a good job with homework problems. Homework being due is solely based on the flip of a coin (heads=turn in, tails=don't turn in) so you are always pretty much forced to stay on the ball, and he has a quiz of usually two problems from each week's homework...usually it's on stuff that he's gone over in homework review. Quiz scores kind of add up at the end of the quarter, so try not to slack off on those. Also, everything he does is curved based on the performance of all of his classes, so don't share any answers of hints with the later class if you have the "early show" as he likes to call it. He has two "midterms" actually, they're just chapter tests and not cumulative, and one final that is cumulative. If you hate math and just always end up feeling stupid, take Mueller...he will totally and completely demystify any problems and anxieties that you've ever had in math. Take me, for example, I had a miserable D- in 141, and ended up with a good and solid B!

Do not let the grade I received fool you --Jim Mueller is an excellent professor. He is very timely, clear, and engaging in his lectures. He made things very clear to us and encourages you to ask questions so he feels needed. What a funny guy! He will tell you jokes and make you laugh, and still accomplishes his learning objectives. Jim also goes well out of his way to make himself available to you outside class by exceeding the minimum 5 office hours per week. Yes, homework is due every day, but it's fate is determined by the flip of a coin. Who else does this? Only Jim can pull this off successfully. He also does a fine job preparing you for the midterms and final exam by providing you with a practice packet along with answers well in advance. Overall, Jim Mueller is an above-average professor for mathematics. I am no good with math, and I thought for sure I would fail this course. But his instruction methods are above par and he helped me through the class with ease. If you struggle with math, have no fear with Jim Mueller --I strongly recommend taking a course from him.

I could not have better things to say about this professor. I had to take Calc 1 twice and came out with a general understanding for calc 1. I was really worried that I would not understand anything more complicated though. Jim could explain anything and make it understandable. I would take him for every class at Cal Poly if I could. Not only is he good at explaining things, he will never make you feel bad if you don't understand something, no matter how simple your question may be. I took the workshop too which definitely really helped me in this class. I just want to thank Jim if he ever reads this because I've really struggled through a lot of my classes at this school and after taking this class I feel so much more confident in my abilities.

FIRST: Jim is the kindest, grandpa-like, overall-wearing man on campus. HIS CLASS: There are weekly homework assignments that are graded. Good news is, all of the answers are on the online PDF so there's no reason to not get a good HW score (which is a good portion of your grade). Jim is an above average teacher, sometimes a little confusing, but will hold office hours at any time you name. His midterms and final were really hard, but he curved them fairly. Lastly, going to class is 100% optional.

My advice is to take a class from Jim every chance you get.

I absolutely LOVED Jim as a professor. I had him 3 quarters (MATH 142, 143, 241), and can't even begin to say how much I am going to miss having him for 244. I enjoyed his teaching style.. he doesn't give you examples that will be a cookie-cutter formula with which you will be able to plug the homework problems into, but instead will give you examples that demonstrate the theories, and then ask different style questions that make you apply the ideas present in the class examples. If you are ever stuck, use the office hours- he's awesome in them. He gives 2 exams and a final, and before each, hands out a packet of practice problems that prepare you extremely well for each test. If you take honors, he will stretch your understanding of math a lot more than a regular section of the class would (I took Calc BC in high school and got a 5 on the AP test, but opted to retake 142, figuring it would be all review, but I was really challenged by the class and the additional material he teaches). Overall, WONDERFUL PROFESSOR and I would HIGHLY recommend if you like math.

Professor Mueller was perhaps the best teacher I've ever had. I worked really hard and got a B-. Look at the other ratings, people who did well or did not, all gave really good marks for Mueller, and for good reason. He is jolly and presents material very clearly. He doesn't want things that were supposed to be learned in other classes to trip you up on exams. Like in 241 you don't see nasty by parts or trig subs on his exams. No calculator, no notes, except for the final you do get one sheet of paper to put whatever you want on it. We had 2 midterms and a final. 100 points for each midterm and 150 for the final. HW was collected on a coin flip and was worth 50 points weighted. He curves exams so the average is around 78, unlike some teachers who like to see a 70 average. The most helpful and caring professor I've ever had. Utilize office hours because he is the least intimidating teacher ever. He really wants you to learn the subject and gives sample questions to prepare you for each midterm and the final. If santa clause did walk among us, it would be him. (One kid who came to his door on halloween thought he was santa, both by looks and personality I'm guessing). He gave us leftover halloween candy and dressed up as a "math teacher" for halloween! All fancy with a tie. Every other day he has overalls and doesn't look all that formal. Don't let that fool you, this guys knows his stuff front and back and is an asset to cal poly. He has a skill in teaching that not many others possess. To easily explain complicated topics. Stay on top of the homework because it adds up. Tests are not easy so study the sample questions well. Teachers need to study this man and be more like him, for he is the best and brightest i've had thus far in my college career. Don't let the high marks fool you on level of difficulty though, its not a cake-walk, but put in the work and you'll be fine. He is really hilarious! Very funny man. Take him!

Professor Mueller is hands down one of the best professors Cal Poly has to offer. I took the calculus series with him for the honor program, and he was amazing. He really knows his stuff. His explanations are clear and he presents the material in such an easy way to understand. He also takes the time to go over hw problems every day in class for like 20 minutes so you can ask him anything and he'll tell you how to approach and solve the problem. Jim, as he will tell you to call him (automatic coolness points), has been the best calculus professor I have ever had either in hs, community college, or Cal Poly!!! He is extremely clear in his instruction of the material, and conducts his class in a very fair, fun, and entertaining way. I would recommend him over and over again if I could. By reading some of the very first Poly Ratings (1999-2000) I can see he hasn't changed a bit over the past decade (his first words in class everyday are still "It's close to the start of fun with math!"). A quiz every friday on 1-2 homework problems collected during the week. If you take Mueller, you will enjoy class, and learn the material. You must do homework because the day after he assigns it he will take questions about the assignment from the students. He will always go out of his way to help you outside of class. "It's time for fun with Math!" That's the first thing you'll hear every day as soon as the over-all clad Dr. Mueller walks thru the doors. He fulfills that quote with his humor and lax teaching style. The Single Greatest professor thus far in my Cal Poly career. Professor Mueller is extremely thorough in his explanations, and will go over a subject/question as many times as needed until Everyone in the class has an understanding. His notes are very organized and every example is easy to follow. I got a C, but I was literally 2 problems away from a B in the class. Even still, I've never been more comfortable with math material as I was in his class, and I'm an engineering student. He does collect homework "every day." Each assignment is due 2 days after assigned (tho he often extended dates for longer assignments), and the fate of the assignment being collected or not rests on the daily coin flip. (Note: request to have tails side pointing up before the toss haha). Dr. Mueller was the most helpful teacher I've ever had in office hours. Highly encourage going to office hours, the man is brilliant and memorizes almost everyone's name after the first visit. And do your homework slackers.

At the end of week 7 now, almost time to register for winter 08...I've had the privelege of having Dr. Mueller for FOUR STRAIGHT QUARTERS (142, 143, 241, 244). It's truely disappointing to realize that I will probably have a different professor for the rest of my math courses. This man is perhaps the best teacher I've ever had. If you EVER have the chance to take one of his classes DO IT. His class is challenging (the four classes I took were HNRS) but interesting, and even if you get a C, you feel like you've learned a lot. In fact I bet I could fail his class and still get quite a bit from it. If all teachers were like him, we'd be in Utopia. He does dozens of examples, ranging from simple, easy ones to ass rape hard ones. The tests can be fairly difficult, and getting an A may be tough. However, he curves them very significantly. Dr. Mueller is very dedicated to his students and is serious about his profession. He grades all the homework himself and provides (also neatly scripted himself) homework and exam solutions for students to follow. The additional outside effort he puts forth to assist students plus his clear and organized lecture presentations make Dr. Mueller an exemplary professor who should be rewarded his own corner office along with a Christmas bonus paycheck every single year. However, the expectation he has in store for students go hand in hand with his own high standards. He is extremely intelligent (from Cal Tech) and knows the course material inside out. He is fair but difficult. His exams sometimes require extensive knowledge of the subject. Nevertheless, he has every right to generate complex problems in his exams granted his exceptional teaching skills. Dr. Mueller is one of the best math lecturers I

Dr. Mueller is a saint! He gives two midterms and assigns weekly homework which he collects and grades. After graded homework is returned, he hands out copies of the complete worked solutions to every assigned homework problem. Both midterms are curved so that the average is a B-, the final is also curved. St. Mueller is able to clearly and efficiently explain the material.
