Marcy Mullen is a very good, but difficult lab instructor. She is new to cal poly but has been teaching for a while. She knows so much about science and is always sharing interesting facts with the class. The bio 231 lab is really chill. You hardly turn anything in and you just go to the lab and do your own thing. Occasionally Marcy will lecture but the majority of the time you are just looking at the cadaver, or models on your own preparing for next week’s quiz or practical. Every week there is either a quiz or a practical. The quizzes are 10 points and each week you are given a very long list of words that you need to be able to spell, identify and know about. The practical consists of 3 or 4 of these lists after several weeks and you go around to stations answering 100 points worth of questions. I thought marcy’s quizzes were much harder than other teachers and she was a much harder grader. Everything had to be spelled exactly right, and it was always all or no credit. This was different in other classes. Regardless, the bio 231 lab is very challenging. the lab and lecture hardly correspond you really are studying for two separate classes. It will require hours and hours of studying. I would recommend marcy, but know that she will challenge you.
