Professor Tim was a cool guy! Had him for his first class as a professor and he really made accounting interesting. He has tons of experience and tries to use it as examples which helps a ton to have real world examples. I had him at 7am which was difficult but he tried his hardest to make the class interesting and keep us awake. He was always super helpful at office hours and encourages anyone with questions to come to him for help. There were short quizzes for most chapters and they aren't too hard if you pay attention in class. Midterms were not that hard but he does challenge you to make sure you know the concepts. Overall I would recommend to take his class! Just be prepared to put in work because after all it is accounting

Ridout tries very hard but treats the class with way too high of expectations. Right off the bat, he expects students to learn the material in one day, making students do the homework prior to teaching the chapter, and then goes back and reads the chapter during class after students have already completed the reading the night before. I believe he lacks competency to answer questions, as when a student asks something, he just repeats what is written in the book and looks at you as if you are stupid. His office hours are not helpful and he does a poor job of explaining. Be prepared to spend one day on each chapter, if that.

Ridout is a really nice guy. That being said, he hasn't figured out how to be a teacher. I had him 7AM for his first class he's ever taught, which was difficult itself but he didn't make it that much better for the disadvantage we were all at. His lecture powerpoints were clear enough, but he doesn't spend much time actually teaching us and instead reviews homework we had already done. Asking questions isn't much help either as he rambles on for a while without clarifying. He gives weekly quizzes which aren't too hard but expects you to finish quickly even when a good amount of questions require math and solid amounts of time. Midterms are fine if you study for them. If you don't have options for a better teacher, it's an alright class but I would say try to avoid taking it from him.

Professor Ridout is a good teacher. For me he made accounting enjoyable, which I think is pretty hard to accomplish. He does however stray off topic, BUT not as bad as most teachers. I go to his office hours pretty often and they worked for me. The only reason I will probably not get an A is because of my lack of studying. Contrary to others evaluations I would recommend his class, he really cares about his students, and once you get the hang of his teaching it becomes a lot easier.

First and foremost Tim really cares about his students. He wants everyone to succeed and will put in the time and effort to do just that. The problem is, is that he hasn't figured out how to do that yet. It was his first time teaching and at 7 am. He knows what he's talking about for sure. But he fulfills the accountant stereotype with being quirky and can be confusing sometimes. He gives a lot of homework. A lot. It sucks that he gives the homework and then tells you how to do it after you turn it in. Quizzes are easy and midterms are fine if you study. Tim's a great guy, his teaching style not so much.

I took ridout at 7am when it was his first quarter as a professor. His classes were (most of the time) boring and he takes attendance so that kinda sucked. Lectures just dragged on and on but i got used to them Quizzes every week for the chapter you just learned and there was homework almost every day and sometimes it took me 3+ hours to do it even though homework was 2 points Also his exams weren't too bad, multiple choice and free response Ridout as a person is very caring and he does want you to succeed. He's really nice and informative when you ask a question in class and he's helpful during office hours

Winter 2016 was Tim's first quarter as a professor, but honestly, he has been my favorite teacher so far at Cal Poly. He cares so much about his students and is so passionate and enthusiastic even though class was at 7 am... I had some personal issues during the quarter I took this class, and he was so accommodating and understanding, and really did everything he could to assist me and help me succeed in his class. If you do the homework and focus in class, he is clear about what to study and what will be on his quizzes and tests. I liked that the class was interactive as well, and not just a teacher talking to you the whole time. If you make an effort to get to know him and attend his extra hours and study sessions, it really makes a difference not only to understand the material but to enjoy his class and teaching.

Be prepared to take a homework quiz on the chapter every two classes or so, but advance notice is given. The schedule provided on the syllabus is very accurate, so technically if you wanted to, you could get ahead on all the homework and material as early as you wanted because everything is based off the book and its material. Tim is energetic and really wants to help his students learn!

Tim is the man. He truly cares about his students and went out of his way on multiple occasions to help out the class. The beginning can be a bit daunting if you've never touched accounting before, but it gets much better. Stick with the reading and go to office hours and you should be fine. Definitely study the homework for midterms and don't get behind. Above all just enjoy the man that is Tim.

Tim was honestly one of the best professors I've ever had. He was fully invested in his students and wanted his students to prosper. He even added office hours to accommodated more students because many of us could not attend his original ones. We had a test on almost every chapter, but they were beneficial in understanding the chapters and their concepts. There were two midterms that were each worth 20% of your grade and a final that was worth 30% of your grade. He grades homework mainly on completion and effort, so even if you don't get it, just put in effort and you'll get full credit. Overall, I would recommend Tim as a professor due to his passion and energy he puts into every class.

Tim was a great teacher and I would totally take him again if I had the chance! He's pretty new to the teaching game but he tries his hardest to convey the material in a way that you can understand it with the addition of applying "real world" concepts with it. Accounting didn't come easy to me cause i've never dealt with it beforehand so i went to his office hours a lot (and tutoring) and he reexplained concepts and was really approachable! take tim !!!

Great professor. He genuinely cares about the students, and going to office hours is very beneficial. He will clarify anything that doesn't make sense. His main objective is making sure you learn the material, which sometimes can be difficult and time-consuming, but worth it. He makes an effort to remember you as a student, but you will have to dedicate a good amount of time to his class. Overall, would be stoked if I had him as a professor again.

Tim is really awesome in that he makes the effort if you do. The class is tough and moves quickly but doing the reading helps so much. The lectures do get a bit long and boring but that can kinda be understandable. The only problem I really had was that we would have an incredible amount of homework to do and it was all based on the reading since we hadn't had the lecture yet so everyone would struggle on it. What was good though is he would grade on effort and then post the answers. He was very helpful in office hours and would even make extra time for us. He was really amazing and one of my favorite professors.

Tim is probably the best professor I've had at Poly so far. First off, he puts a ton of effort into the class and really wants his students to do well. The lectures aren't all that entertaining, but Tim keeps them as interesting as he can. There is quite a bit of homework, but in my opinion it reinforced the material very well and I barely had to study for the tests. Also, Tim lays out your entire workload on the syllabus the first day of class so you know exactly what's coming. The classroom is laidback, except he doesn't allow phones, which is probably for our benefit anyway since it forces us to pay attention. If you do the reading and the homework, this class is pretty easy. Nothing but great things to say about this guy, and if you have the chance to take his class I would strongly recommend it.

Professor Ridout ultimately ended my freshman year on an amazing note. He is by far one of the BEST teachers I have ever had. I hate math, and as a business major I was really nervous for a class that depended so heavily on numbers. From the very first day of class, Tim was friendly and made it clear that his goal was for us to really learn the material as it applies to the real world. He has worked for many small startup business and even Walt Disney. Tim gives you a quiz of 10 questions during the last class of each week, but if you pay attention whatsoever during the lectures then you'll score good grades. I got 8's and 9's on every quiz. When I did receive a 6/10 on a quiz once, Tim emailed me immediately to discuss it and he was really serious about not letting me fall behind. He hands the homework back the next class after you turn it in, and you also get the quizzes back the next class too. He is extremely helpful and will assist you with ultimately anything so long as you reach out to him via email or office hours. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND taking Tim for this class, especially for those who have no background knowledge of financial accounting. I wish I could have him again as a professor!

Tim is the man! It is easy to get an A if you want to put in the work (which actually isn't that much if you apply yourself) and he actually, I mean really, cares about how you are learning. One time he stayed for 15 minutes after a 6-8 on a Thursday just to talk to me about what I can expect from the rest of the class. He is kind and caring and, I think, funny. There is one thing that is maybe "bad" about his class: you literally cannot miss a single class. Every class you miss, even excused absences, ends up being 2% off of your overall grade. But given how he teaches this is understandable. Take Ridout if you want to learn about accounting in a very fair and enjoyable environment!

Professor Ridout was by far the best professor I had at Poly this year. He graduated from Poly and is teaching after a long career to give back to his school which is pretty cool. Lectures got long and boring at times, but he would bring his real world experience in accounting & finance in to give more depth to the subject matter. There is a lot of homework, but it's really the only way you'll learn accounting. He returns graded material to you the next class and had our midterms back to us the next class as well.

I love Ridout so much!! He's the coolest guy ever. He's very strict in random aspects like you have to fold your homework a certain way and you have to bring a table name tag thing to class everyday, but he's the greatest professor ever to be here. You know those professors who just renew your faith in school and make everything worth it? That's him. The dude gives hard tests and quizzes weekly, but if you try and do the work he tells you to, it's a piece of cake. And I'm not the greatest student either. If you go to tutoring everyday, do your homework and make sure it's right, you're going to get an A.

This guy is fantastic. Tim genuinely wants everyone to succeed in his class and he does everything on his end to make that a possibility. Get to know the guy by talking to him, because he is genuinely a really cool dude. If you ask questions in class he will answer them clearly and eliminate confusion and he loves it when you do ask them because then he knows where the class is struggling and he points focus there. His quizzes and tests are all very fair and you should be prepared if all you do is show up to class and do the homework. If you're struggling on tests and quizzes he pleads for you to come to office hours and work on it, he's a great guy, a total dad, and I can't recommend him enough as a teacher. I know Pouraghabagher and McDowell have great ratings too and if you get them for 214 you're chillin, but since I had Tim I can only speak to my experience and that has been a 10/10. If you already got this guy and are looking to see what to expect, congrats, you lucked out. Do the homework, pull the practice from polylearn and do it, and show up to class, you won't regret it.

SUCH AN AWESOME PROF!!!!!!! He is always available to help you in office hours (or scheduled outside time). You just have to show him you're really trying. Honestly, a pretty tough class but you can do it! A quiz for ten chapters and two midterms. There's homework every night too. It's a lot of work but he makes it fun and like you want to be there. He does take attendance, but I had this at 8 am and always wanted to go. My alarm didn't go off one morning and I showed up to class an hour late. I had missed a quiz and he even let me make it up. To succeed in this class, just work hard and put in serious effort. He can help you whenever and on whatever you don't get. Really kind guy and wants you to do well, as long as you want to, too. Go Tim!!

This professor can be scary at first but after a few lectures you relize how good of a professor he is. So far he's been my favorite teacher here at Cal Poly because first of all he knows everything there is to know about accounting and is willing to help you tramendously if you put in the time and effort, second, his office hours are lit (in the sense that he's a lot more relaxed and will even throw a couple cuss words here and there) if you go and visit him, and lastly hes just an overall great professor that has done a great job making BUS 214 understandable and interesting. Tim Ridout is the man. Definitely my favorite professor so far at Cal Poly and one of the best teachers I've ever had. Bus 214 is a challenging class no matter who you take it with, and Ridout does a phenomenal job of clearly presenting the material and is very available and helpful in office hours. He keeps lectures interesting and engaging and you can really tell that he genuinely wants his students to learn and do well. He's super experienced in the field so he absolutely knows his stuff and can relate it to students very well. He also went to Cal Poly which is pretty rad. 10/10 recommend taking Ridout for this class or any other class he's teaching.

Ridout was an awesome professor for BUS 214! He was very knowledgeable and he managed to make something dry like accounting and make it as interesting as possible. Ridout is also personable and approachable, and he takes time to get to know his students. He treats his students with respect and genuinely wants them to succeed in his class. He had an engaging teaching style, and he knew the material backwards and forwards. A few things to know about the course: 1) Attendance: attendance is taken every day and is part of your grade. 2) Homework: quite a bit of homework which was at times overwhelming--but doing the homework is really the only way to fully understand the concepts 3) Quizzes: 10 quizzes; one per chapter. Quizzes are easy as long as you pay attention in class. 4) Exams: 2 midterms, 1 cumulative final. Quizzes and the in-class exercises do a good job of preparing you for the midterms and Ridout does a good job of reviewing with the class for the final. 5) Projects: one project done on Excel My advice for this class: 1) Take advantage of office hours! Ridout is always happy to help you anytime you come in! 2) Don't worry if the material doesn't click immediately! Since this is the first accounting class you'll probably take, it may seem completely abstract and strange at first, but it just takes some time to click. Once it clicks, everything falls into place and it becomes a very easy course; Ridout also does a good job of slowly introducing you to the concepts. 3) Put effort into understanding the homework, and you'll be set for the exams. Overall, I highly recommend taking BUS 214 with Ridout, and I will be looking to take other courses taught by him in the future!

Tom is a clear, organized, amazing instructor. This class is demanding, but anyone can be successful if they put in the time. My tips to be successful in class: - Read the full chapters before class and create quizlets for chapter while reading - just LISTEN to lecture DON'T take notes (they're all on polylearn) - add to quizlets by reviewing lecture slides at a later time - review for the quizzes by studying quizlets and going through lecture material - practice - DRINK COFFEE BEFORE 7 am and you'll be golden ponyboy If you're successful in this class you'll become one of Tim's golden gems. A true TOP GUN!

I would only use one word to describe Professor Tim: Solid. Whether you are a student who is looking to concentrate in Accounting (like myself), or a student simply looking to complete the class requirement, I would highly recommend this professor. One of the most frustrating things that I've encountered when dealing with professors or teachers is when they do not put you in a position to succeed in the class at hand. This is not the case with Professor Tim, he will set you up for success and you will have a clear shot at an A in the class. His homework is time-consuming (think at least 8 hours a week of HW), but it drills the concepts of Financial Accounting into your head. When it came time for the test, I only needed to study for an hour or two and got excellent grades on the tests, mainly because the homework is where you do your studying. Professor Tim's lectures and clear and straight to the point, and his communication is crystal clear when it comes to explaining the concepts. He has industry experience, and in a non-arrogant way, he provides examples of how each Accounting concept applies to the real world in his career. Bottom line: Take this professor. I was bummed I didn't get Pouraghabagher because I heard she was good, but as it turns out I got exactly what I hoped for with Ridout--an excellent working knowledge in Accounting and a good grade in the class.

Tim is the most organized and straightforward teacher I have ever had. He is efficient, exciting, and passionate when it comes to teaching. The only reason you will see bad reviews is if the student did badly in the class because they didn't want to work. Tim deserves a 4.0. Very knowledgeable guy and a great professor. Answers emails in literally a few seconds. Tim is the best! Tests are exactly what you studied and did in the homework. Know the material, do you homework, and study like you should and you will do well. He makes accounting fun.

I see a lot of people complaining about Tim as a professor, but let me tell you, TIM IS THE BEST. He is passionate about accounting, is well-versed in the subject, and communicates the subject clearly. Many people complain about the workload of the class, but they should expect that with accounting. While Tim assigns a lot of work and expects a lot from his students, none of the assignment are a waste of time or"busy work," and he is always extremely helpful. He also inserts small jokes into a lot of assignments that are pretty entertaining. I highly recommend taking him!

Ridout was one of the best professors I have ever had! If you have never seen financial accounting before, THIS IS THE PROFESSOR TO TAKE IT WITH. Ridout has a very structured class with lectures, in class exercises, and homework assignments due every class. There are 2 midterms and one final. All his tests are straightforward and very fair. As long as you do the reading, homework, listen to his lectures, and the in class exercises, you can definitely get an A. Mr. Ridout is a fantastic professor, who is genuinely concerned about the educational well-being of his students. Tim's experience before becoming a professor brings a lot to the table, as he relates some of the concepts we talk about to the things he did in real life as a CPA. Ridout is seriously one of my favorite professors I've had at Cal Poly. The class material can definitely be hard for lots of people, but once your get it. its pretty straightforward and Ridout does a lot to make sure his students get to that point. He really really does care about the success of his students but in a tough love "you have to put in the work to get the results" kind of way. His class is a little bit different from Pouraghabaghers in that her financial accounting class is more conceptual while Ridouts is more about the numbers and the math. I'm definitely a little more a numbers person, so the style of his teaching made it easier for me to understand. He gives quizzes on the most recent chapter every week, 10 questions in 10 minutes, which is pretty hard if you don't understand the information, but they don't impact your grade overall too much. Other than that, homework every classes graded on completion (solution manual online), two midterms besides the final, and an excel project. I would recommend Ridout to literally anyone he is the absolute best

Tim makes it easy to pass his class, not necessarily to get a good grade, but to pass. Just showing up to class gets you a ton of points and so does doing the homework(its online and you get as many tries as you want to get 100% on it). He is a super nice guy and really wants his students to do well. I found his office hours extremely helpful as the actual class is pretty fast paced. There are quizzes about every other class ,but they don't count for a large amount of your grade. All of the quiz answers are online after you take the quiz and he posts all the lectures online. Overall I would recommend taking him.

I had Tim for both 214 and 215 and he helped me so much throughout the two quarters. I personally struggled with 214 and therefore was nervous about taking 215; but Tim learned my habits and the goals I had for my grades and he helped me immensely in trying to reach those goals. It's a tough class, and he definitely has high expectations for each and every one of his students, but if you genuinely work hard and go to his office hours (I went to every single one and was usually the only one there) he'll really try his hardest to help you understand the chapters. It does move very fast (about a chapter a day) and expect a chapter quiz every week. He also has two big projects on Excel throughout the quarter that took me about 4 hours a day for a week to finish. The excel projects were rough and had a few curveballs in them but it really made you think about the concepts and really helped me understand everything because you do it all on your own. He assigns maybe an hour to an hour and a half of homework after each class, which is kind of a pain but it definitely helped me become more comfortable with the topics. Tim is an amazing professor and as long as you bust your ass and show you're genuinely trying hard then you'll do just fine! He also has a super cute golden retriever that he brings in to meet the students before the final :)

Tim is the man!! He was a fair grader (very generous with partial credit) and he was a great teacher. The intermediate series is brutal, but if you did the reading and the practice problems before class then you can get a lot out of lecture. If you didn't do the reading and the problems, you'll be lost and say he's going too fast, so make sure you force yourself to do the reading. Tim really cares about his students and wants us all to succeed. This class was not an easy A, I worked my butt off, but I am so glad I took it with Tim. You have three tests including the final (not cumulative), one excel project, and practice problems which he doesn't collect but you should do them anyway to prepare for the test. The tests were fair and he curves them if he thinks he needs to. Take 322 with Tim.

Tim is nice guy but can't teach to everyone's understanding. He has clear favorites and always picks on them and makes jokes with them while the rest of us feel he is wasting our time. 3 exams, not impossible but very tough. I studied my butt off and the best I could get was a C on all of them...others didn't study at all and got an A. If accounting comes naturally to you, this class is good...if it does not then you will not get any higher than a C. Also, if you are not a straight A student in Tim's class, he is very discouraging towards you taking the CPA. In office hours he makes it very clear that if you cannot even do well on his exams he has no idea what the CPA will hold for you.

I cannot speak highly enough of Ridout. He is extremely organized, clear about what is going to be tested, and is willing to sit down with you and help you if you don't understand something. Every class, he assigns ~10 pages of reading and 3 or 4 problems and he will go through the reading and problems in detail the following class. However, the homework is not collected at all, so you can study on your time if you're not getting a lot out of his explanations. About the class: there are three tests and one excel project. Each of the tests covers 2 chapters and the chapters aren't really cumulative. Meaning, if you bomb the first test, you don't need that information to do well on the second and third test. Not going to lie, the tests are challenging. Each test has free response and multiple choice. The multiple choice tests concepts while the free response tests application. The multiple choice is hard, no way around it. The Excel project is very easy and actually helps you study for the third test. Overall, I highly recommend Ridout and wish I could take him again!

Professor Tim Ridout is an absolutely amazing professor. There is no question about that. His real-world knowledge and examples tremendously improved the classes understanding of the material, while making it fun along the way. My interest in accounting was further enhanced by his teaching and I feel more prepared to take the CPA on this material. Tim is very competent in the subject manner and he delivers informative class lectures. Tim offered a numerous amount of extra office hours. He showed that he truly cares about each and every one of his student's success and would answer emails within 2 hours of me sending one. I really enjoyed having as a professor, but as the quarter went on, I realized that I only like the way he teaches, but not him as a person. He only picks favorites and constantly calls on them and talks to them. If you don't get A's on the test, he won't like you. Even if you get an A on the test, he'll say something about how "you did well, but you weren't the top student." He also tries way too hard to relate to the students and comes across as odd at times with the stories he shares. He definitely makes some students uncomfortable to participate. He also thinks that you are only successful in accounting if you work at a Big 4, so if you go to him for advice, be prepared that he is very closed minded. I constantly heard people ask him for advice after class, and he would passively share his opinion that if you aren't working for a Big 4, thats not good enough. If you take him, be prepared for some of this because I found it very difficult to ignore once I stared to notice.

Tim is seriously one of the best accounting teachers! He presents the material clearly and prepares you for success on the midterms! If you do the homework and prepare from homework and in class exercises you will do well on the exams. He is genuinely excited to teach the material which makes the class enjoyable as well. TAKE HIM!

Ridout is one of my favorite professors for Accounting. I've had him for 214, 215, and 322 and he's very consistent with his lectures, tests, and teaching style in all three classes. His tests are pretty tough but doable. Definitely have to read and do the homework before class or else there's no point in going to class. He always gives out an in class assignment that's not turned in for us to work on in class and practice the material that was assigned for that day. I found this to be extremely helpful because it's usually pretty similar to what type of question will be on the midterms, and he actually takes the time to explain how to solve the problem before class ends. He's very engaging with all the students and tries his best to make sure everyone succeeds. Also going to his office hours will help you so much, so take advantage of it. Definitely take Ridout if you can!!

Great professor! Very understanding and tries to help out anyone that asks for it. Made accounting easier to grasp and focused a ton on concepts. Make sure you read the textbook pages before class or else you are going to fall behind fast. Very generous with partial credit on tests.

I personally don't see what all the hype is about Tim. He is definitely a nice guy and all, but I agree with the other person that he does not teach towards everyone's learning style. Felt like even though I put in the work, the information was not sticking. Went to office hours quite often to gain a better understanding and still didn't stick. Just my 2 cents. D's get degrees.

Tim is a great professor. He's enthusiastic and fun that can make student laugh during accounting lectures. However sometimes he can be fast and hard to follow. His office hours are great he can help students one on one and clear all the confusion. I would take him again.
