He probably shouldn't be teaching at Cal Poly. He obviously has a great understanding of calculus but is terrible at conveying information. His accent is thick and while his English is good, it isn't good enough to easily clarify students questions. He moves through material at a pace much to fast for an introduction to calculus. Avoid his class if you can.

This guy is not a very good teacher. He gives you all the material but does a very poor job explaining the material in a clear way to be able to perform it by yourself. He just goes through as fast as possible hoping that everyone is understanding what ever the hell he's doing. Wouldn't recommend him it haven't already taken calculus because those were the only people who understood his class.

Simple guy. Great instructor. Some people complain about his mumbling or accent but it wasn't a problem for me at all. He will approach concepts with different analogies and strategies so students of all learning types will grasp the concepts. Amazing during office hours.

Fan is alright. His jokes are cool, but he can be quite confusing. Personally, I would not recommend him as I mainly learned from Youtube videos and still almost failed. This is coming from a math major. DO NOT TAKE FAN! If you do not get mad, I would not recommend him.

i love Yang!!! He might go a little fast but its only because the classes are an hour long and its hard to teach calc in an hour but he does manage to get so much stuff and somehow have time for group work. Overall, he is straight to the point and if you need clarification he is more than willing to help. By far one of my favorite professors I've had at cal poly!

Professor Yang was a decent professor. He wasn't terrible, but he wasn't stellar either. His accent wasn't a problem, and he had decent jokes. He does go very fast, but again, he's trying to teach calculus in under an hour. The one thing I absolutely did not like was that he always showed Khan videos or some sort. He would show them when there were some harder concepts, and perhaps didn't feel apt to teach due to his accent? Not a difficult class at all though. I'm currently in the process of trying to switch from ASCI to math and hadn't taken math in over a year, and I barely passed calc AB in high school. So if I was able to get an 86%, anyone can succeed in his class as long as you put in work. What helped me the most was doing a ton of practice problems.

Fan is a super funny guy, but if you didn't take calculus in high school/recently, you will NEED to add a workshop. He speaks English well enough to understand, but I felt it got in the way of me learning the material a little bit. I only had 50 minute lectures and because of this, he had to rush through them and cram as much information in as possible--meaning he did not have time to explain, or show all the work. This isn't his fault, but it made the course more difficult all the same. Without my workshop, I probably would have gotten a C in this class.. not exaggerating at all. Fan does give out detailed (and very helpful) study guides as well as practice tests, but without an additional 3 hours per week in workshop, I would not have understood the concepts. We were able to go over the weekly homework solutions before turning them in, which was cool. Group exercises in class each day (except weekly quiz day). Quizzes were okay, some tricky questions but I passed all but one of them and he dropped the lowest quiz score. Also, don't buy the book, there are online pdf's and solutions guides if you search for them. Overall, he's a nice and entertaining guy, but I would only recommend if you don't mind adding a workshop. This course definitely required multiple hours per week, but I assume that's the case with all math classes

Would highly reccomend for Calculus. i had to retake 141 and my first professor was so confusing and fast but fang definately presented the material a great deal better. with calc alot of extra work is needed no matter what but fang is not trying to trick you and he even gives you practice tests and does not grade hard. would highly reccomend

I absolutely loved calc this quarter with Fan. He has a very good teaching style which involves a lot of helpful group work. He has you watch videos before class to get a preface on the information that is going to be presented. This made learning the concepts a lot easier. I actually learned a lot of calc and didn't hate math entirely this quarter.

Dr. Fan had a heavy accent however, his ability to recognize when the class was lost or even just a single student was amazing. He has a lot of passion for teaching Calc and he is very knowledgable in the subject. His jokes are dry most times but he tries and a lot of times he keeps the mood light more than serious. Overall a great professor and if you have to take calculus he is a safe choice to pick.

This was his first quarter teaching at Cal Poly, but he did a pretty good job. His lectures were very well organized and got students through most of the material. The quizzes were pretty straightforward if you pay attention in lecture and do ALL of the assigned homework problems. For the midterms and final, he gives practice exams which are very similar to the actual exams. He may add one or two challenge problems, but getting a B on them doesn't require too much extra time. His English is not bad, but if you are concerned with a professor with an accent you may need to take another professor. Overall, he is a great guy who is very passionate about mathematics.

Professor yang is clearly very smart and understands the material well. It takes a week or so to get used to his accent, but once that happens the class get way easier. His grading is somewhat confusing, and he won't put your grades on Poly Learn, so keep track of what you get on all your homework and quizzes if you really care about knowing what grade you have before your final. If you don't understand something, he is very helpful during office hours, so go to those if you can. He will also drop a couple of your lowest homework and quiz grades as long as you shw up to all of his classes. All in all he could be a better teacher, but he's good enough that you can do well in his class. (I took this class after taking Calc AB and BC in high school)

During the first two weeks I found Yang very confusing because of his accent and also because he presents material in odd ways. You get used to his accent pretty quickly and he covers material so slowly that you always have time to digest the material even though he does not present it very well. His problems on quizzes usually come directly from the homework or class lectures and are super easy. His jokes get funnier as the quarter goes on too lol. Overall, he may not teach too well but his class is easy to pass.

He was super nice and I understood it a lot better after one on one help. His midterms are super easy just STUDY THE PRACTICE MIDTERMS. The final was super hard but he curved it so no biggie. He was always making us laugh with his analogies. Having this class for 2 hours straight was death, but i think any 2 hour calc class is death.

Loved Fan Yang! He has an accent, but it isn't hard to understand him. He can be really funny, but I definitely wasn't able to always pay attention in his class. But he's really helpful in office hours. The class is made up of homework once a week, 2 quizzes a week, 2 midterms, and a final. The homework is only 10 problems but he also gives recommended problems. The 2 quizzes each week are really easy. One of them is a question straight from videos he told us to watch, and the other one is a partner quiz with problems similar to the homework. I never studied for the quizzes and almost always got 100. He gives sample midterms that are VERY similar to his actual midterms, so that was extremely useful. The final wasn't too bad, but a little harder than the midterms. Overall, the class wasn't too bad, and I'd recommend taking Fan.

Fan Yang is AWESOME. If you have the chance to take his class, DO IT. He presents the material very clearly, his notes are thorough, his class is designed to make it as easy as possible for you to do your best, his tests are all very fair, and he makes Calc 3 as fun as it can get. He is also super helpful during office hours and will go step by step to make sure you understand the material. He also cares about his students and is really good with accommodations and making sure everyone is in conditions where they can do their best. He's super easy to talk to and really tries to make the content easier. Calc 3 is hard because of the subject matter, but Yang makes it not that bad. There are two quizzes a week, a work alone and a partner one. The work alone ones are really easy and just to make sure you watched the videos he assigned over the weekend (watch them, they are important and helpful) and the partners ones cover the week's content. They seem like a lot, but when it comes to the midterm, they're nice cause you've kind of been studying all along. The midterms and final exam are hard but fair, but Yang literally gives you what you need to get an A. DO THE BOOK PROBLEMS AND REVIEW PACKETS. It does take a lot of time and effort, but it is doable to get an A in this class.

Accent is hard to understand sometimes. His tests and quizzes are straightforward. Timed partner quizzes and individual quizzes each week. Sit next to smart people right off the bat because he doesn't let you change seats during the quarter and you have to do quizzes with the people sitting next to you that are a large portion of your grade! I learned this the hard way, and I spent more time convincing my partners that my answers were right and explaining it to them, and it was hard to finish quizzes. Grading is fair. Final grade: B+

Professor Yang wasn't the worst teacher, but neither the best. The way he taught the class made it hard to comprehend the subject, as Calc 3 is maybe the hardest course in the Calc series. His flipped class method was good to solve problems, but it was extremely difficult to understand how to do the problems still. His tests are really hard, and in order to get a high grade you need to really study a lot and understand the material very well. I wouldn't reccomend nor avoid Professor Yang, it would just depend if you like a flipped class or not.

Fan Yang was honestly one of the best Calc Professors I've ever had here at Cal Poly. He offers chapter packets, which emphasize on group work and alternative methods of teaching the material. Rarely do you ever have to review examples in the Thomas Calculus book, as these packets simplify things for easier understanding. His class was well structured and helpful. His office hours were rarely packed and he was always helpful during them. Overall, put in the work for Yang's class and you'll understand the material.

Not a terrible professor but not a great one. He is oblivious when it comes to his students and their workload. We had two weeks of non-stop testing, like every day of the lecture we had a quiz or midterm. Also, he is NOT a gracious grader; he will tear your exam apart. On the flip side, he is a decent lecturer and is helpful if you go to office hours, but its accent his pretty tricky to deal with and it is super easy to have miscommunication. His tests are challenging, and he does not curve. Take what he says with a grain of salt, as he told my class that the final would be 30% of each section we had, but it ended up being a ch.13 test (which we learned during dead week). Also, he does not teach from the textbook, so you might want to take a professor who does. I can not recommend, but I can not say he is awful.

He is super nice and extremely helpful. This man actually cares that you do well. He noticed I wasn't doing well on the quizzes so he made an appointment for personal offices with me every friday at 5:30 (which probably isn't anyones favorite time to do calc.) After going to his offices hours after the first midterm I literally doubled my score on the second midterm. He is extremely helpful and I am honestly really sad I don't have him for calc next quarter. He told the class that we can always come to him for help even if he isn't our teacher. This man actually cares!! I would highly recommend him to anyone taking calc. At the beginning of the quarter I hated going to calc because I hate math, but now I actually enjoy it because I can tell I am learning and improving. Overall, Dr. Yang is an amazing teacher and I feel so lucky to have had him.

Yang really wants his students to succeed. I thought the course load was definitely manageable and his lectures were understandable. He would make sure every student was doing well and if he saw someone's grade start to slip he would contact them and arrange ways to help them before it was too late. Professor Fan was pretty awesome, he has an accent but you quickly get used to it and he's very energetic and interesting in general. I enjoyed his class as did many others and he definitely is good at sensing which topics are more confusing and is extremely helpful. I do recommend joining the workshop for the class if you don't like math or aren't good at it. There is a lot of information crammed into a short amount of time and that is the most difficult part about the class. I would say that getting a B or higher is definitely reasonable if you put in effort and ask for help when you need it.

Prof Yang was the best math teacher I've ever had, and one of the best professors I've had at Cal Poly. This was his first quarter teaching so he was still figuring it out, but adapted very quickly to student feedback. He's very good at explaining the more difficult concepts in a way that makes sense, and if you don't get it he'll try again in a different way till you do. He moves through material quickly, so it's not good to miss lectures, but we ended the quarter with almost a week left to review which helped immensely. Be sure to do the practice exams, as they are pretty much the same type of questions that will be on the real exams, which are very straightforward and exactly what was gone over in class.

Dr. Yang rocks. I took Calc 2-4 here and 2 and 3 killed me but I loved Calc 4 with him! He is a little hard to understand as he has an accent but I loved the layout of his class (a little lecturing then pairing us up for group work) because even if I didn't fully understand the lecture, the pair up part helped a lot. He also has about 1-2 quizzes a week, one of which is alone and are the exact problems from the video he posted the night before and the other being a pair up quiz based on the past week of material. I felt both were very fair and he was very good at explaining abstract topics in a more concrete way which helped me a lot. Overall I HIGHLY recommend him as he is a great professor and you will learn a lot.

This is a great class to take if you don't want to come to class half the time--all the material is covered in online handouts and the class time is pretty much just him reading them off a projector and you working out problems in a group. If you're having a hard time understanding something, he explains things pretty well in office hours.

I hated this class at first because his teaching style is super weird, handouts and lots of group work. I learned nothing from coming to class (there are two quizzes a week so just show up for those) and I just had a solid study group where we just did hw and studied together and figured all the stuff out. The midterms were easy (basically the study guide) but I thought the final was annoying because the bulk of the points covered material we did in the last week of class which is pretty annoying, and it wasn't like the study guide. Fan is super helpful in office hours though so if you don't get something just go then. He posts homework due Monday on Friday nights so you don't get a chance to ask him about it which sucks. This class is very doable/passable though so I'd take him, but I think like 3 people got A's though

He helps you understand the information by giving examples and analogies in class, sometimes can be a little confusing with his accent, but for the most part pretty helpful. He prepares you super well for the tests with thorough study guides and the quizzes are either partner quizzes on the material from the previous week, or work alone quizzes from material he covers on 20 min worth of videos per week. Yang tries his best to make classes interesting and help convey course information in ways that help you understand it. After a while, you hardly notice the accent that so many people comment about. My only negative is that he gives us videos to watch every wednesday (mon tues thurs fri class) that presents new content and then every thursday we are tested on said new content. They're at least his videos and not some khan academy things but testing us on our understanding of just videos feels like a bit much. He also does pair quizzes but he puts the on monday, testing the material that you learned the previous week. IMO he should reverse the pair and solo quizzes so fresh material can be worked through with a peer but theoretically familiar material can be tested solo. Not a prof I'd recommend switching out of but nothing too extraordinary.

Dr. Yang did a good job educating us on the basics of Linear Analysis. I don't think we covered as much material as some of the other classes, but I was good with that because I think it's better to go a bit slower and have all the students understand the material well, rather than go quickly and have only a small portion of students really understand what's going on. Pros: fosters a collaborative, communicative atmosphere in class… makes class so much more fun, easy to pay attention to, and just in general contributes to learning; group work in class means you can ask him questions right away, instead of going home to do homework and being completely confused; uses analogies and examples to explain difficult concepts; spends extra time on concepts if he sees that the whole class is struggling; utilizes humor in lecture to keep you engaged; prepares you well for his exams; made sure everyone understood the material, not just the top 10% of the class who always participate and get A's on quizzes/tests; helpful in office hours. Overall, I really enjoyed having this professor and I would highly recommend you take him!

Yang is an overall great professor, he is very energetic and is willing to work with you. He is happy to clear any difficulties and confusions that you may have during class or office hour. Our class was actually a flipped classroom where we watched videos at home and he would lecture a little bit in class and answer questions, we then would move to group work which was quite helpful. Pay attention to group work since some of the group work problems are the homework problems you turn in every week. Weekly quizes and homework. Quizes there are work alone and partner quizes. Work alone quizes are easy since you only have one brain but partner quizes are slightly harder since you have two brains: yours and your partners. Midterms were quite easy if you study hard using his practice midterms Which were harder than the real one. Final is challenging however, but it's mostly because of all the con tent we had to learn.

Fan Yang is a great guy, he really is. He uses metaphors and analogies to emphasize very abstract concept. His accent can be thick at the beginning, however overtime you get used to it. Make sure you sit in the front and pay attention, because he says little details that are important for the midterms. His midterms are similar to the practice midterms he posts so make sure you do them. They are literally you best tool for studying. His work-alone quizzes are easy, while his group quizzes are harder. Make sure you try to get paired with someone decently smart. His final was difficult I must say. Study and study his wording because he is pedantic on some wording. And finally study those damn true and false questions. I love this class and learned linear algebra pretty easily.

Fan Yang loves math. He brings that energy to the classroom with his strange sense of humor, but made Linear Anaylsis way more exciting. I really enjoyed the class and thought he did a nice job of presenting the material. For every section he would print a worksheet with notes that covered everything...EVERYTHING. He says don't read the book because it can confuse you. Good thing, you usually know what he wants. Bad thing, you sometimes can't talk with other sections because he may use different terminology and we went way out of order. Lots of opportunities to see how you are doing since we were constantly have quizzes, don't worry though they aren't worth a ton though.
