I would avoid taking this professor at all costs! I'm currently in 133-02, which is supposed to be a class for second language english students. Many students in the class struggle with speaking english, let alone writing. What really ticked me off was that he states that our class, 133, is supposedly identical to 134 (class for students with english as their first language). HOWEVER, the homework load is a drastically different than 134. While we've been doing 500 word essays due every monday and wednesday, my roommate ( who is currently in 134) only had one writing assignment so far and has been chillin watching netflix. I don't think this heavy workload is the correct way to approach students who are learning english still, we should be focused on writing and grammatical exercises instead.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not take this so-called Professor. He does NOT know how to teach at all. His instructions are not clear whatsoever, and the amount of work he gives are ridiculous. English as a second language class should not struggle so much already. He has no idea what he's doing. He tries so hard to "teach" but really fails because he tries to use all these big words that no one understands. AVOID HIM.

Can't inprove my English at all... Too much writing assignment. You have to do the essays for more than 3 hours every week and you have at least one essay due every week. This make the school days too stressful for me. But the good thing is that there is NO tests for this class. If you have enough tine and can bear his boring class, this is a nice class for you to earn a goid grade.

I wonder if English is his first language... I wonder if he was lying that he taught in many universities for 5 years... Sometime I can't even understand what he said... I have a feeling that all the class feel so bored...

The worst professor I've had at CalPoly by far. In a class designed for people who speak english as a second language, Professor Peters assigns unnecessary amounts of busy work while teaching us nothing of any importance in class. Throughout this quarter we have been meeting twice a week for two hours each class, and the entire class would just sit there either half asleep or on their computers since the professor would just ramble on about abstract concepts that had 0 pertinent relevance to the class. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR

This professor is a nice person. But he has this crazy idea about English and language practices that makes his course super hard. He will never give you an A for any essays or assignments whatsoever. He never clearly answered any of the questions that the students had. Honestly, because half of the class are foreigners (not American born), I doubt they even understood anything he said. If English is in fact your second language, but you think you speak decent English, DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. Take 134 instead. TRUST ME ON THIS. You will probably do well only if you were a try-hard (no offense) in high school.

STOP THINKING TO TAKE THIS PROFESSOR and now you are ready to see why. This guy have lots of assignments for you, and the funny thing is he can't even finish grading your assignments two weeks after you handed in. He failed to clarifying most of the assignments he gave. He thought his is good at those topic but he is not. Although he looks like a nice person, he is the kind of person that not keeping his words. I LITERALLY learned nothing from this class and tried so hard in this class to disappoint only myself.

Professor Peters is definitely not as bad as everyone says. In fact, he is a really cool guy and he was always able to help when I had difficulties. All the people here talk about incredible amount of workload, but this is just not true - yes, we did have to write one 300 words essay per week, but we are in college and couple of hours of writing is absolutely reasonable for a 4 units class. Several people in hour class seemed to get by with a B not doing much. Pr. Peters is a nice person, he always allowed people who are behind to finish the assignment later. The only thing he is actually lacking is that he never graded the assignments in time, otherwise I would totally recommend to take him, if you want to learn English from the other perspective.

As other people mentioned, he assigned a lot of work to class. He had a unique method of how to teach English and it was thought provoking. His grading method is clear, so if you follow what he wants, you would be able to achieve the grade what you desire for. He is incredibly understanding, and if you talk with him, he would love to find a way to help you. If you struggle with English, especially writing, you might want to consider talking this class, but If you are down for it, it would worth the try.

This professor manages to explain barely anything to the class yet still thinks it is justifiable to be a strict grader. I had been lost all quarter on how to do one of the many assignments he prescribes, only to be greeted with no help on first drafts and bad grades. Although English is indeed my second language, and I took this class thinking it would benefit me and my grades, the opposite happened. I had been getting straight A's for every class I was in, but this class bluntly kept serving me D's and C's. Every time I ask for explanation on why my grade is so low, I am met with confused mumbling and a change in topic. For one project, we had to rely completely on peer reviews that commented on our paper. My peer reviews didn't contain any criticism, so I didn't change anything about my paper, and I got an F without further explanation in the class. Please do yourself a favour and do not take this dude. Maybe if I wrote my papers weeks in advance and frequently asked for tips during every office hour about my drafts, I would get a higher grade. But that's pretty ridiculous for a GE this low in a class that is designed for Second Language students, that stuff should be discussed in the class.

I felt that there was very little direction in this class and we were often left to write essays that didn't really engage us or help us improve our writing. His lectures mostly involved students sleeping or just using their laptops as there was very little substance in them. The workload itself was very light but the grading system was unclear and punishing. Despite attempting to adhere to his unintelligible grading system I often found myself losing marks for what felt like arbitrary criteria. Although this class might seem simple at first a lack of direction and meaningful course material means that it's not really worth your time.

This is not a ENGL133 class. Most people that come into the class expecting a easier class because they're less knowledgeable in English are in for a rude awakening. However, if you are sufficient in English, this class should be easy, although a lot of work. His grading is pretty easy, as long as you follow the directions he gave.

I honestly think this was one of my favorite professors my first quarter at Cal Poly. I was scared to take English because I have always been terrible at writing and have never liked it, but this class was not bad at all. There are a lot of essays but it was honestly so helpful and for our best interest. He is very helpful, understanding, and easygoing. Would definitely recommend taking his class!

Professor Peters is an AMAZING instructor! He is super chill and a really nice dude. I truly enjoyed this class and it was honestly a piece of cake. Considering this is a college level English class, he is super nice with grading. As long as you participate in class, turn in the online discussion forums, and ask him genuinely important questions, you can easily pull of an A. Also he doesn't even care if people turn in essays an HOUR past their deadline on Polylearn. I definitely recommend taking him if you want an easy A!

Professor Peters was very boring. We would do work, but most people would not work on it, and just get on their laptops and do whatever they want. I went into office hours for help once, and it was really good advice though. I would avoid if you can possibly can, as it would not be worth your time to take this class.

He is an amazing professor. He really cares about his students. I highly recommend you to go to his office hours or ask him after class to look over your essays. That was what helped me the most to receive an A.

Overall Dr. Peters was a decent professor. I took this class as a 5-week summer course where the bulk of the course was writing four 5-page essays, along with some "busy work" assignments per week, and then a final presentation. There are no exams or quizzes of any sort. Most of the content he discussed in class felt somewhat unnecessary, and honestly the only reason you need to buy the textbook is to do the "busy work". Dr. Peters is pretty forgiving about things like citations, meeting the page-length requirement, and turning in assignments online a couple minutes late. If you took AP Lang or AP Lit in high school, you'll probably get a good grade in this class if you turn in all the assignments. My only concern is that I didn't really become a better writer in this class, and if he doesn't like your style of writing, you might need to spend a lot of time with him to fix that and get better grades on papers. I would recommend taking this as a summer course if you want to rip the band-aid off and get this Gen Ed A3 out of the way.

Took him for english 145 over the summer. Dude always had good insight into essay ideas and was always really nice. class was a lot of work because it was so compressed but idk i thought it was pretty fun. most lectures were interesting and engaging conversations, it was fun to show up everyday to class. Maybe i'm just humanities starved engineering student and he is actually an awful professor though. I was really surprised to read all these bad reviews after taking this course.

I was hesitant to take Peter's class at first because of the Polyratings but I learned such a valuable lesson: DO NOT ALWAYS TRUST POLYRATINGS! I loved this class! His work load is comprised of four essays about 5 pages each on ANY topic. You literally get to choose what you get to write about instead of in other English 145 classes where they literally give you a list of topics. There's three short responses (500 words) out of the textbook you have to do and a rhetorical analysis presentation at the end of the quarter which is fun because again you can literally do it on ANYTHING. He offers such good feedback on the graded work and also allows you to submit a revised essay in case you really bomb one or just want to get a better grade on it. My class always had really interesting discussions so maybe people in other classes just weren't engaged but Peters is awesome at leading the class into deep and thoughtful conversation about sometimes controversial topics that get people really fired up in this day and age. This class is completely manageable and worth your while especially if you want to learn more about something you don't necessarily have the opportunity to in college. Maybe the other Polyrating's got him confused with another Jason Peters but I would highly recommend this class and this professor.

Professor Peters is a great professor and would highly recommend him. He grades fairly even though some people feel he grades tough (not everyone can get As). Meet with him at office hours and get to know him, it helps. One thing that was annoying was how long it took to get our grades back from him. I understand there are many papers needed to be graded, but it took about 25 days to get our grades back from the submission day. I would recommend Professor Peters.

Peters was a great professor! Getting an A in his course is not hard, which is HUGE in the English department. He is SOOO nice, always happy to help, and loves when you participate in class. His lectures could be a little dry, but I didn’t mind. He looked over each of my essays for me and I got As on most of them. I would highly recommend this professor- he is an amazing guy and a great professor. I absolutely think I became a better writer through his course, and learned a lot.

Overall, he is a pretty decent professor. I took him for HNRS 145 and overall it was a fairly enjoyable class. His lectures are extremely low key and all you really have to do is sit there, listen and occasionally participate. Most of his lectures were based on more discussion with the class and in small groups about various topics. He doesn't care about chatter or eating in class even though my lecture only had about 20 students and he often let us out early. However, the actual grade consisted of 4 essays. A rough draft was due where two other students would peer review your paper then the final paper was due a few days later. You could write about literally anything you wanted as long as it fit with the type of essay and backed by enough evidence. He graded the essays harshly and I knew very few students that got higher than a B on essays. That being said, I also do not know anyone who got lower than a C either. His feedback on essays are extremely vague and he takes a long time to grade. He is pretty disorganized and kinda spacey but he is a nice guy and definitely enjoys teaching a lot.

Jason Peters is a not up to the standard at Cal Poly. He is unclear about what he wants on essays and is inconsistent with grading. He is quite biased and significantly more liberal than other English teachers that I've had. He doesn't teach you anything important in class and assigns unnecessary activities. Avoid this teacher if you are not ready to curtail your writing to his point of view. If you're passionate about writing about the gender gap, then take him.

I love Jason Peters and I highly recommend him. There are 3-4 essays and a final paper where you fix the mistakes from the papers throughout the quarter. He is very lenient. There are no required textbooks that you have to purchase, he provides them on PolyLearn. He doesn't take attendance, but you won't want to miss because the class is easy and you can get your work done in class and not spend too much time out of class. He is so approachable and will help you a lot in office hours if you want a good grade on your papers. The class is centered on the environment.
