Andy is a really good teacher. At first I thought he was going to be strict and mean, but he really is nice. He is pretty much open to suggestions on what you want to do in class and he is willing to listen to all you have to say. It's kind of hard to get a hold of him because he doesn't have that many office hours, but if you can get a hold of him, he really does help you out on your essays. Andy is a cool teacher so if you get him, don't worry he's not boring, monotonous teachers.

He's an allright teacher. The class itself is pretty basic: How to write essays (because you haven't been learning that for all of high school, right?). But he has a HUGE EGO: DON'T ARGUE WITH HIM - HE WILL LOWER YOUR GRADE for it.

Professor Maness is the best professor I have had so far. I do not like English one bit, I took his class because I had to, and Maness made it somewhat enjoyable. He is one of the nicest guys ever...I SLEPT IN and missed the final, and he took time out of his schedule to let me make it up. That says it right there. Maness rocks!!!

Andy Maness is super great. Some people say that he grades essays too hard, but i think he is pretty fair. I got B-'s on most of my essays, but he makes you write a journal entry almost every night, and that helps your grade a lot if you keep up with it. The material he teaches is pretty interesting. he is really nice and if you have problems with anything, he really tries to help. he tells you your strong and weak points in your writing, which is really helpful.

Andy is awesome. The class is awesome, but you have to do your work. He presents interesting material. You have short readings nightly, like 5-10 pages. There are little quizzes over readings which are easy if you read. Then there are 3 out of class essays and two in class. He tends to grade the out of class ones hard, but don't stress you can edit one at the end of the quarter. He is a young guy and gives english a fresh approach. The class setting is really laid back and easy going. Overall, Andy is really approachable and helpful. Take him.

Professor Maness is a great guy. I thoroughly enjoyed his class. He assigns a good amount of readings that are discussed in the classroom. Try to keep up with the reading and you will do fine. There are two in class essays and three out of class essays. The in class essays are you midterm and final. The final you take on your last class before finals week. You will enjoy the class, so take it.

Andy is an awesome dude. His classes are very laid back and at the same time, you learn a lot. It is not a high stress class and he even cancels class on some of the Fridays! There isn't much work in the class and only a little bit of reading and writing. The best thing about the class are the books he picks for us to read. For my class, he chose Maus, which is a comic book based on the Holocaust. It wasn't the same run around book that many other english teachers offer. The material is interesting, and Maness is a very intricate speaker. Take this class

Professessor Andy Maness was a joy for me last quarter. He is one of those teachers that understand you have a full schedule outside of his classroom, and is very understanding of your hassles. His teaching style is fresh and original; our reading material matched our textbook flawlessly, and although the essays were graded a bit harshly, it is still possible to get a good grade easily. He is a funny, interesting guy, and his teaching style is often laid back, but you still learn a good deal. Plus you get to tell your friends you are reading a comic book (Maus) for a college class! I would choose him over any other English professor out there.

THis class is good. Everything is fairly easy. He no longer has journals. The thing that might be hard is the essays. He is kinda tough on essays. You have three essays, a midterm, and a final. The reading and homework is not that hard, but it kinda gets annoying because you have to do it almost everyday. But overall, it is a good class. You learn a lot.

Where can I begin??? Andy is the absolute best teacher I could ever had asked for. He is laid back and can relate to his students. He is funny and keeps your attention all the time with his humor and teaching techniques. He loves to use music (like Eminem and Britney Spears) as his humor and even links them to the class discussion. His required readings in class are easy and reasonable. Maus I and II are great books, not only cause they are comic books, but because of the style. I couldn't put them down until I had finished them. People say his essay grading policy is difficult but I had no problem with it. I did well on all of the essays. The comments he gives on them are very helpful. He isn't there to work against you, he wants you to succeed in his class and he will do everything he can so that you do succeed. I STRONGLY recommend Andy Maness. You won't regret it!!!

Andy (you can call him that) is an awesome teacher, one of the best I've had at Cal Poly so far. One thing that separates him from the stereotypical English teachers is his ability to recognize your strengths and flaws and to praise you for your strengths and think of ways to correct your flaws. For example, I used too many "I"'s in my personal narrative essays and he found alternative ways for me to rewrite some of my sentences. Ordinary English teachers don't point out those types of inconsistencies but still dock you for it. Another thing that separates him from the bunch is that we read a comic book called "Maus" which is based on the Holocaust, yes, a comic book in college. Overall, I don't think he graded too harshly. He writes down many comments as to why he gave you the grade he did so after looking at his comments, you shouldn't be surprised at the grade you got. Overall, a great personable teacher who wants his students to succeed and helps his students succeed (isn't that what teachers at Cal Poly are supposed to do)?

Andy gets high marks as a person and professor. The class consists of homework and in/out of class essays. How well you write and how hard you work reflect in your grade. Homework is 20% and assignments are given two or three times a week; read a passage, and respond to a question afterwards. So long as you take it seriously you'll be cutty. Don't turn in a two page paper for a major essay. Before you turn your final draft in see him to at least review your thesis. The comments on your returned papers show he actually read the paper.. I mean they're useful/insightful. Andy goes beyond what is expected of an english teacher, and I recomend the class. G'luck and remember the ol' axiom about procrastinating on essays, "Procrastination is like masturbation, you're fuckin' yourself."

Andy lead great discussions which brought a lot of understanding. His passion for english is contagious. There was a small semi-daily read, usually accompanied by a one page essay. Very doable, even fun. He chose really interesting peices to write about, peoms, art, articles, etc. The Final was an in-class essay on a novel-sized comic book, not to be taken lightly. This was a rad novel in a good form for the thinkers who don't like reading 1000 pages. Awesome teacher. Also, you can state your beliefs, and he'll respect that.

Professor Maness is one of my favorite professor's i've had so far at Cal Poly. He is very approachable and enjoyable to talk to. You get to read seeing and writing which is a really fun book of different essays, one entitled, 'the cosmic significance of Brittany Spears.'Also reading you get to read Maus, which is a very easy read. Maness is the best prof. I have had at Poly. The class is thoroughly enjoyable and very understandable. Class consists of discusiing short stories you read the night before and taking occassional quizzes on the material. No tests or midterms, just a final and about 3 essays. You are even allowed to re-write your lowest essay grade. He cancels a full week of classes for student/ teacher conferences in which he helps you entirely through your paper before grading it. He is very flexible with office hours and truly cares about students. A+ for Maness - everyone should try to take him.

Andy is awesome!!! He's the cool young teacher that everyone likes. His class was always enjoyable to go to. He's up to date with the pop culture and knows us teens =). He gives little homework (mainly just reading) and says that if there is less participation in discussions during class, he will give reading quizzes. Read the assignments and you should be fine. When I had him for last quarter, he only gave one midterm and a final. They were both in-class timed essays. You also read a two-parted comic book entitled MAUS (which pertains to the Holocaust). The class was given three take home essays to write last quarter. You get to pick from about 4 prompts for each. He's not exactly easy on the essays, but if you try hard and go to his office hours if needed, then you should do okay. Speaking of office hours, he's awesome in them! You got to read about things like 'suburban life' and the 'cosmic significance of brittany spears'. Going to class was always a pleasure and the discussions were great. Many of the discussions we had were cultural based, which I loved. You also read MAUS which is a Holocaust book in comic book form. It is one of the most interesting books I have ever read. He expects a lot from his students, but is ALWAYS willing to help. I went to office hours a few times and it was really great. He knows what he is talking about and gives you great advice and he is a REALLY interesting person to talk to in general. If you are having problems outside of school he is VERY understanding. Cool guy, kinda hard grader. Andy's class is very laid back, and as others said, can get pretty repetitive. He gives reading assignments each night and as long as the class participates in the discussion he won't give quizzes, but my class didn't so we had a good amount, but theyre not bad. We had 2 out of class essays, and he allows you to re-write one for a better grade. There's one midterm which is an in-class essay and a final. Go to office hours! Great teacher, I really enjoyed his class. Just be prepared- he is a very hard grader. You'll write 3 essays, and you can choose to rewrite the first or second essay. There was a lot of reading (6 novels/books for the quarter) but all of the books were really interesting, and believe me, I'm not a reader, so the fact that I actually read all of them all the way through really says something. Andy is very passionate about literature and really knows what he's talking about and how to spark discussion in class. Even though this was my only class on Fridays, I was always excited to go to class to see what crazy thing Andy would do next. He got along very well with everyone in our class, and he seemed like a fair grader. Be prepared to read, though, because there are usually at least 2 "pop" quizzes per week. 3 take-home essays throughout the quarter, and if class discussions go well during the quarter, he will most likely cancel the final. Professor Maness is right of the bat very friendly. He will interact with the class and get to know YOU. In fact, three years after having taken his class, whenever I cross paths with him on campus, he still knows my name and greets me. As a person, he's a really nice guy and easy to approach. As for his class and teaching, for a writing exposition class, he has you do more reading than you'd expect. We had to read about 4-5 books (all of short length, 200-300 pages). This throws some people off, especially because it's a writing class, but one of the key and essential elements to writing well is reading well, too! If you don't read what you plan to write, you won't write very well at all. So don't be turned off by having to read a little. It's very helpful.

Wow, I took this class at 7:00AM my first quarter here. That sucked to wake up that early and I slept through a few quizzes. Don't do that. I probably would have gotten an A if I hadn't missed the two quizzes. Here's the thing about this guy and this class: He uses a lot of books. They aren't big expensive text books, they're just paperback books he has you read and tests you on them later. He also has you write a few essays. To be completely honest, this is just like a high school English class. It was a total cakewalk. I didn't actually read the books in this class. I mostly looked up summaries or reviews of the books before any quizzes or tests or essays and that was enough to get me through the class. I would recommend buying the books just in case you can't rely on this yourself though. The guy is nice and understanding. Some reviews on here say he has a liberal bias on his writing or in his corrections or whatever, but don't let that turn you off from taking him in this class because it doesn't apply.

either he likes you or he doesnt. do the reading, and speak up in class even if what you say is stupid (at least it gets discussion going). if you do those things then theres a good chance hell like you. hes very adamant about keeping the class work interesting. if he feels one of the books he has assigned is not reaching the students then he seriously considers changing it for the next quarter. the grade is based off of 3 papers (was going to be 4 but he took the last one off), reading quizzes (4 different books), open-book group grammar quizzes, and i think that's pretty much it. i felt he was a little bit harsh when it came to grading papers, but i typically feel that way with every class that is based on opinion and not fact. he can also be a little spiteful at times. when it's not directed at you, it can be quite entertaining. overall, i would recomend him.

He is a great guy and a very honest and helpful professor. He relates to his students and is there to help and teach you. People day that he is a hard grader but he isn't. You just need to TALK TO HIM and he will be more then helpful. He wants his students to succeed and you will in this class. I have a tendency to not want to go to class (as I am sure all of you do) but I actually look forward to his class. It is just a big discussion on the reading where you can say anything you want. There is never a wrong answer but he will help you get your point across better (which you then apply to your essays. With this class there are three essays. A definition essay to break you into the class, a claim essay and then a research/argumentative essay which also counts as your final. I took Maness at 7 AM winter quarter because of the amazing ratings he had on polyratings and, looking back, I don't think I would have taken him at all. He is definitely overrated because I think people are rating him based on his personality rather than how well he teaches. I have always loved English but I dreaded going to this class every day (although part of it was probably the fact that it was at 7 in the morning). I just felt like Maness graded at a much higher level compared to his level of teaching. In class, we usually got handouts read to us and didn't get too much guidance regarding the different types of papers we had to write. We had a bunch of pop quizzes - some were multiple choice and some were short answer. Most of the quizzes had a few tricky questions and you never get full credit on short answer. There were three papers - one was definition, one was persuasive (I think), and our final was a 8-10 page research paper due during finals week. I felt the professor was bias in his grading of papers because of his own perspectives and beliefs. Overall, I was not impressed and this is an okay teacher. He grades way harder than he should based on how he teaches and didn't provide me with much help when I went to him with questions.

I took Maness at 7 AM winter quarter because he had such high ratings and now, looking back, I would not have taken the class at all. He is insanely overrated and I think people are rating him high because they like his personality. Maness gives a lot of pop quizzes on readings from a writing book and from The Things They Carried. These pop quizzes were probably the only reason I ever came to class because otherwise, I felt they were a waste of time. The professor did not guide us to write our papers any better - instead, he would read examples of other people's writings (which he felt were not good enough) or read handouts to us. I felt like I was in junior high when it came to the teaching aspect but then Maness grades like his students are in graduate school. All his pop quizzes (both multiple choice and short answer) had tricky questions on them and he will never give you full credit on the short answer. Maness assigns three papers - one is definition, one is persuasive (I think), and the final is an 8-10 page research paper that was due during finals week. Based on my experience, I think I can safely say this professor is bias in his grading of papers because of his own perspectives and beliefs. I have always loved English but I dreaded going to this class every day. Every time I asked him questions, he was very vague and did not help me in my writing. Overall, I think his teaching is not good enough in comparison to his expectations and grading.

I loved this teacher! Yes, the class was difficult, but he made getting up for an 8am class worth it. He is extremely funny, and ties in pop culture to what we are learning. He side tracks a lot in the beginning of class, so if you bring up an interesting topic, you could waste away half of the class. One Friday was spent telling embarrassing stories-quite amusing! He makes refrences to a lot of movies, like Napoleon Dynamite and Fast Times at Ridgemont High--what other teacher do you know does that? He is a hard grader: for the definition essay, I got a C- (my first time getting anything below a B on any English essay), but on the claim essay and midterm essay (he gives you the questions ahead of time, you get to use your book for The Things The Carried, and an outline.) I got a B. He drops the lowest usage quiz and reading quiz, and you get extra credit for every usage quiz if you find more grammar problems than needed (I think that's why I ended up with an A-). Go to his office hours to read your essays (especially research paper), or even to the Writing lab (which isn't necessary, but it's good to get an educated, objective opinion,), and you'll do fine in the class.

He scolded us like little children and refused to awnser any more questions about his stupid projects. But when only 15% of the students in the class are doing the assignments correctly (thats a direct quote from maness) maybe he needs to re-evaluate his teaching methods. This professor requires a good amount of reading and about three or four essays during the course. During class we would mostly discuss what we read the night before and that was about it. He is a pretty good teacher, and he doesn't grade easy but he isn't rediculous either. He takes into account student difficulties too. I wouldn't say he is my favorite teacher, but it is a class that is good. If you're taking him next quarter you will be fine.

He is probably my favorite english teacher so far he was very caring to students need and due to unfortuante events this quarter was a little less structure but that wasnt his fault overall the class was very good and i would recomend him he is a very nice guy and the only thing negative i would say is when you try to read his handwriting on your corrected papers it is difficult to understand. But overall a great teacher.

Andy is a great teacher, helping you to understand everything you read and the basics of writing. He has a huge basis of organization in essays, but he is also completely willing to help you with them through each step. As long as you show him respect in coming to class and listening to the lecture, and putting your part in when you can, he will make it simple for you in his assignments and quizzes.

He brings great energy to the classroom. His classes are not based on english but rather consist of reality and absurd topics. Maness knows how to bring a class to life, and make english enjoyable. He takes the subject with a grain of sand, so be prepared for anything. The class is set up around reading quizes, 3 essays and an in-class written midterm. I Definitely recommend taking this class if you want to stray away from the norm.

Maness is a great teacher. The workload is not too bad and he is VERY helpful during office hours! Most of class is spent in discussion which is interesting and Maness talks a lot but he has interesting things to say about each topic! The book we read, The Things They Carried, is also amazing and one of my new favorite books. I really enjoyed this class! :) Essays can be tricky but Maness is a fair grader. Go to office hours for essays! It helps a lot!

Alright let's begin. As a student who appreciates the feedback given on polyratings, I would never skew anything on purpose because I assume most of the students using this website appreciate REAL information. Andrew Maness has a decent polyrating score. This is undeserved. His teaching style and ability to communicate is predicated on two things: if he agrees with the topic in question and if you (the student) share that mindset. While enrolled in his class, I learned nothing regarding writing or argumentative techniques. I did however learn that Maness hates men. This came up quite a bit. He framed his aggression and lack of respect towards men (even student males) as though he was doing us a favor because we were so ignorant. Feminism (a topic I COMPLETELY agree with) came up every day and the reason it aggravated me is because 145 is not an ethics class. We never discussed writing or how to present arguments, we only discussed articles and ideas that Andy found worthy of his time. We had numerous group quizzes. They were on basic grammatical tools, things one should know before entering college. People hated these because we didn't discuss the content before the quiz. Just get ready for that. His grading is completely based on who you are, what you believe, and if you've ever contributed to a conversation in a way that undermined his beliefs. Luckily, I did alright. This was not the case for everyone. Andy frames his lectures, when he has the energy to actually lead a class, in a way that basically makes the students feel inhibited. When you contribute to a conversation in a way that stirs things up or brings up alternative ideas (you know all those pesky, introspective thoughts you have), Andy will say something like "Ok, sure yeaaahhhhh" and then continue to tell you why you're wrong and stupid. So don't speak up or you know, use your brain. He's a poor professor at best and my theory is that he hates where life spit him out. Don't let him get you down if you have to take him. My advice for success in his class is shut up and appease him because in 145, Andy doesn't care about your thoughts or ideas or beliefs, he cares about the tiny bit of power he feels when you feel a little bit stupid for believing one thing or another.

Andy is a great professor and should get more credit for being one. Some of these polyratings are harsh. If you just did the work and took the time to care about your essays you will do fine in the class. YES, he does voice his opinion often but never makes you feel bad for having a different one.

It is really up to the student to make this class interesting. Most of class time is discussion based, so if you want it to be interesting, come prepared with something to say. Otherwise, you will just sit there for two hours. Andy is very friendly and helpful, but a little disorganized. There was no schedule for the quarter, but only weekly schedules. Reading quizzes were manageable, grammar quizzes were very easy and he lets you use owlpurdue.com for help. If you are a decent writer, you will do fine in this class!

I love English and was excited for this class, but I was disappointed. He does not post grades on polylearn so it is difficult to know what you have in the class, and his grading is often confusing. There is group work, quizzes and essays due constantly which lead to a heavy workload. Not many people did the reading so we didn't have much to discuss which lead to a very long 2 hour class. He seems like a nice guy and he wasn't a bad teacher, but I would not recommend taking this class if you have another option because it was harder than the GE should have been.

I had a great experience with Maness’ English class. He is very helpful in giving suggestions for improving your essay(s) and he cancels class all the time (major plus). I think he has a very realistic picture of what it is like to be a students and thus he keeps the busywork to a minimum. I don't think his low ratings are warranted. Personally, 10/10 would recommend.

This class is fairly straightforward and not particularly difficult, but I did not enjoy Maness as a teacher. He's a nice guy and very understanding, but likes to hear himself talk and lectures about absolutely nothing for the entire 50 minutes of class. Going to lecture is essentially pointless: you learn nothing and there are reading quizzes every day but if you email him ahead of time that you're not coming he'll excuse you from the quiz. As far as I can tell, there is no limit to the number of classes you can miss. He cancels class frequently which is nice. You have to write two essays (the second is just a continuation of the first), read one book, and write an in-class essay on the book so the workload is not unmanageable at all. Take this class if you are already a good writer, and it will be a rather easy A for you; however, if you want to learn how to write well, Maness is NOT your guy.

Okay, so it seems that maness is a great 134 teacher. so take him for 134. for 148....save your life and move on to another. he sucks. i know another student let it all out, and that you're probably thinking it's personal, but it's not. He picks favorites in the class and gives them better grades for turning things in with the same quality as another student who got a lower grade. I should know....I was one of his favorites. I didn't suck up....I don't know how it happened, but I watched him grade all of my friends unfairly. His grading scale has nothing to do with the work you turn in...and the suckups weren't his favorites. he's single with a son, so maybe it goes on your looks, i dunno. He requires way more work out of his students than any other 148 teacher, doesn't grade fairly, and the work that he makes you do is really rather pointless. Yeah, I learned how to write a technical work/piece, but that wasn't due to his teaching or grading....or book, cause the book sucks and nobody reads it (quizes are open book so you dont have to.....but be prepared, there are quizes EVERY DAY...also pointless since nobody reads or remembers the material.....mainly cause it's lame). I learned how to write a technical document from the internet and by asking my mom....as sad as that sounds. He comes into class and blows up at students for doing poorly on projects, but then turns around and blows up the day after when students were asking questions about projects. he gives 5 handouts a day and then expects you to find and read the one he gave you a month ago to do the project you're doing currently...and he doesn't tell you what handouts to save for future projects. so you're pretty much screwed with a binder full of crap that you'll never use except for one project in the distance future. He's not "together" with his teaching method, if he was, he'd tell you what he wanted and what handouts go with what project, but he doesn't. Also, he holds up projects that were turned in by classmates (possibly yours) and makes fun of it infront of the entire class.....even if it was well done, but on "flimsy paper". He doesn't realize that students have feelings or a life outside of his class. so.....save your life and don't take him for 148.

And he hasn't told you anything worthwhile about what he's looking for. He doesn't seem to know how to teach Technical Writing (despite his claim to have taken the seminar. pff). His main idea of teaching was to have us read the chapter before class, he'd summarize it for us and type the summary up, give us the summary in class and proceed to read it to us. No, he is not a dick. In fact he is extremely nice, maybe even over the top. No, he doesn't ace in this class, but that would be impossible. First, he has a range of students from seniors like me to freshmen. Second, he is a Literature teacher evaluating technical papers of any possible engineering background, and cannot possibly understand them or appretiate them. The whole class design is an error, but made by those who design the curriculum, not by him. Because it is impossible to really teach this class in worthwhile manner, he turns it into a light, even simplistic experience. It is easy to get a good grade if you do the work, and there are two main projects. The projects are long, but one of them is team based paper, the other is your personal research paper, which substitutes the final. If you cannot produce a 10 page paper in three weeks, with no classes in the last week, and no final to prepare you have no business in higher education. Finally, I was confrontational with him in a few evaluating papers (they were meant to be confrontational with the class program, not him personally) and it did not affect my grade in the least. I believe he is fair, and does the best he can in an impossible situation. Take him.

Andy is a very nice man. His class was always entertaining to say the least. I agree with a previous post that he does his best to teach a class that was poorly designed. A class designed by the same people who require engineering students to take the BIO/ENGR 213 classes. In regards to the post that says the students were presented with a team project and then a research paper due two weeks later, let me clarify something. On the first day of class Andy gave us a syllabus and told us what was due and when. And he constantly reminded us that we should get a head start on the research project. So anyone who complains about deadlines is a poor planner. If you want an entertaining teacher and a decent grade, take Professor Maness.

First off, tech writing is a boring class, get used to it. Despite that, Maness managed to make it semi interesting. Reading the book isn't a must because there are no quizzes on it, but reading will definitely help you with the homework. Talk to him as much as possible, he will remember you and go easy on you. Actually, he's a pretty understanding guy in general. For example, my group on the final project had some problems with our manual, and there was no way of getting it done by class the next morning. We talked to him, and he said it was fine if we turned it in during his office hours that day. When we got to Kinkos we ran into even more problems, and we called him up and he let us turn it in the next day when we actually gave our presentation. He is very helpful if you need it, and all around a great teacher!

Give yourself a break and don't take Andy. His class is laid back and boring, and it's easy to get in the mindset of "this is just a GE class, who cares?". Andy cares. Andy cares way too much. He would have thrown a fit over my last sentence, because it had two spaces after the period. His class is laid back, but he grades ridiculously hard. Andy's buzzwords: "clean, navigable, inviting"... and "white space". None of these words mean anything helpful. He doesn't know what the hell he wants, he constantly repeats himself on and on about how people never put enough white space, then when he returns your resume or group project, he berates it saying you have "too much white space". Plus he asks you to buy 2 books, both of which are NOT on reserve, and both of which are WAY too expensive for a GE english course. The first five weeks of this class contained no work at all. There were open book group quizzes every friday that had no impact on your grade. Then you must complete a large group project without much time to really make a good report. Make sure you get good group members for this because it was a headache trying to agree on what to do. Then a week after thats due, you must have a draft for your 10-15 pg career research report. There is a large time crunch in the second half of the quarter, but everyone gets a B on their project as long as its done properly but don't expect an A. I should have been at his office hours more often to get a better grade. You can laugh in the class and make racy jokes so the lectures weren't boring but don't expect to learn anything.

One day while Andy stepped out of the room a student asked the entire class if anyone had received an \'A\' on a project that we had just gotten back and nobody had. For the final paper he brought in examples from previous terms for us to look at and none of the papers had received over a \'B\' grade. Andy is one of my favorite professors at Poly now. I took this class at 7AM 4 days a week and yes that f**king sucked getting up that early but Andy made it worth it. His energy and entertaining demeanor made the 7AM feel just fine. Now for the cons. This class does have A S**T-TON of work. On top of weekly usage quizzes and small assignments, you have the iFixit project and a 10pg problem/solution paper. However, it's not completely horrible. The usage quizzes are done in class and in groups, they're more of teaching grammar than quizzing you. The assignments are definitely beneficial since they teach you how to write memos and other professional docs you'll have to write in industry. The iFixit project isn't bad as long as you get a good group (which you get to choose). The problem/solution paper is probably the only hard thing in the class and it's just time-consuming. I think he grades pretty fairly. There are no surprises and he's very helpful when you talk to him one on one regarding a specific assignment. He tends to look at the back of the room when he talks to the class which was a little weird at first. Overall I say take him, even if it's at 7AM. I showed up late everyday and still got an A. Not because it was an easy class, but because I did my work.

First off, let me just say that there's not a whole lot of material you actually learn in this class. The main components of his class were grammar usage quizzes (done in groups, super easy if you have the textbook with you), an iFixit project, and a large technical writing report (I think the requirement was 15 to 20 pages). Although both the iFixit project and tech writing report sucked, he was really helpful at giving feedback on both projects. It helped that nobody showed up to his class (no attendance taken in class), I was able to have a lot of one-on-one time with him looking over my projects. Overall, this class is a lot of work, but his grading is not too bad if you find out what he wants out of your assignments.

This class is not hard at all. Like what others have said, there isn't much to really learn in this class. As long as you complete all the work that is given to you, you can pretty much get a decent grade in this class. There is an iFixit project and I think it was enjoyable and it's pretty much easy points to score as long as you follow all the requirements. There is also a research paper to do (at least 10 pages) and it wasn't that bad if you don't do it last minute like I did. Felt like if I spent maybe a little more time on it, I would have gotten an A- in this class rather than a B+.

Professor Maness expects you to read the textbook since he discusses it the next day whenever a reading assignment is due. During this class, you will work on one major project and one 8-10 page paper. The iFixit project is a group project and can be time consuming, If you are on top of the deadlines then you would not have a problem. The 8-10 page paper is tedious but it helps you know your major really well. The class is very time consuming but I would recommend him.

Not a bad guy. He has a very monotone voice and likes to talk a lot. My friends and I never read the textbook and all did well. This class is really boring and there's a group project, so you should take it with friends. The group project is with iFixit. I actually enjoyed it, even my friend and I did most of the work in our group while our other two friends didn't do much. His grading is obnoxious. There's not really a way to get an A unless you put a ridiculous amount of time into your papers, especially the 8-10 page research paper. You don't learn anything in the class except what you teach yourself while writing your papers. Also, we're pretty sure Andy's an alcoholic.

Andy is a sexist asshole. Not only that, but he tries to correct you about the engineering topics you choose when he knows absolutely nothing about them. Furthermore, when you try to get help on a writing assignment, it is more than likely that he will tell you something is okay to do and then grade you down on it later. Don't take him unless you absolutely have to. I have no idea how is polyratings score is so high.

At the beginning of the quarter, I thought this class had the potential to actually be helpful toward my career... all this class ended up doing for me was causing me unnecessary stress. Andy is hands down the most unprofessional lecturer I've seen at Cal Poly. For our 7:00 am class, he would send us emails at 6:00 am (often on Monday mornings) saying that the class was cancelled. He did this maybe 3 or 4 times throughout the quarter, which I'm all about having class cancelled to get extra sleep but he would tell us only an hour before and who checks their email at 6:00 am? No one. When he did show up on Monday mornings, he would be irritated and sweating like he had a hangover. His emails to you will also feature no capitalized letters at the beginning of sentences, or for names... which is ironic because he is an english teacher and will be quick to criticize you on the smallest grammatical errors in your work. His "comments" on your assignments will be illegible and good luck getting anything over a B on any of the big assignments, even if you put ridiculous amounts of time into them. The in-class quizzes are fairly easy to score well on, but they only account for a small percentage of your grade. The iFixit project was honestly the most fun part of this class although it is time-consuming. The final project in this class is an 8-10 page single-spaced paper that Andy grades very harshly. It's really difficult to get motivated to do any of the assignments because no matter how hard you try, Andy will not give you a fair grade or any opportunity to improve (there are no revisions in this class). Basically, this class is a waste of your time and money if you take it with Andy. I didn't get anything positive out of this class except for more friends, and that was because we bonded over our hatred for the class and our disappointment with Andy.

Didn't like him. One of my friends dropped out at the beginning of the quarter and I should've followed suit. His class is quite a bit of work compared to other 149 classes from what I've heard while taking the class. It's also graded harder, and I learned less than what I was expecting. Also the textbook is useless. I read it the first 2 or so weeks and never needed the info in class. For major projects, we had to do both the iFixit project and the problem solution report. Some classes either chose one or the other, and one professor's class's didn't have to do either. The iFixit project was fine IMO, but that on top of the 8-10 page problem solution report was a bit excessive.

Throughout taking the course, i felt that i was just going through the motions and not really learning anything. His feedback is ambiguous and unhelpful, and he is a harsh grader. The iFixit project and the problem solution paper (a majority of your grade) are completely up to you to complete and he will not help you. He says weird shit once in a while too to the class.

As a teacher, Andy does an average job. He tells you what chapter to read for homework, he goes over a couple of examples of documents that you will have to write for the class, and he gives grammar quizzes which aren't terribly difficult and you can do the quizzes in groups. The iFixit project in this class was a little time consuming, but not particularly difficult. The hard part and time consuming part about this class was the writing assignments. The requirements for these assignments were never 100% clear which was ironic because a lot of this class's material has to do with making your documents clear and accessible to your audience. I'm sure if you read the book, which I failed to do, writing each assignment would be easier. Andy doesn't seem to be a really tough grader, and it seems that he will pretty much give everyone at least a B because he wants everyone to do well.

Andy is a really great person to take this class from. I also happened to have him for Engl114 and this was purely a coincidence. Andy's classes are really laid back and he really relates to students. The best part is he has a tendancy to bring in outside sources into class from current news/literature. He's a young professor and really relates to the needs of students in his class. The work load isn't bad at all.
