I enjoyed Professor Malkin emensly. She was a fun and interesting teacher. However you do not want to miss any of her classes because the notes you take in class are what you need to know for the midterm and final. You do have to write an essay but overall the class was easy and interesting. I learned a lot about theater history and I recomend her strongly.

A great professor. I thought the class would be terribly boring, but it turned out to be really interesting and fun. The plays she chose are great. It's an easy and interesting class if you go.

Before this class, I had little interest in theatre, or the history of it for that matter. However, Pam Malkin presented the material in such an enthusiastic and interesting way that I became very interested, and looked forward to reading and analyzing the required plays because she made them sound so exiting. She is a fabulous teacher, and I would definitely reccomend her!

Malkin is a great professor. She is so enthusiastic about theater, and it really helps to make her lectures interesting. She chose plays that were easy to read and understand, and only took a few hours to read. Get ready to take lots of notes, because all she does is talk. But it really is a great class, and is rarely boring. I would recommend her for any theater class.

I definately recommend this teacher over any other Into to Theatre theacher. Her play choice is very appropriate and not difficult. This class was actually fun and interesting to go to. Go to most of the classes and read the interesting plays and you'll get an A.

The comfortable theatre seats perfectly complimented the amount of boredom this class provided. There's interesting stuff in the course, no doubt, but only enough to fill the first half of each class. You'll learn a lot about history of theatre in this class because the lectures are easy to understand. And your whole grade is based on two tests, so if you go to class most of the time, even if you sleep through most of it, you'll get a good grade.

This professor is awesome. Her lectures and tests are clear and to the point. The class is made up of a midterm and a final each worth a 100 points and an extra credit paragraph that she gives everyone who did it 10 free points. So if you read the six plays she assigns and take good notes on her lectures the class is an easy A. Take this class and teacher to fufill your C3 G.E.

This class is easy to attend, all you do is take notes, and at a slow pace too =). Make sure to read EVERYTHING she assigns, buy the book for sure. Coupled with studying, you should raise your gpa in this class. I got a C because I didn't take this class too seriously and didn't devote enough time to it. Once again, read EVERYTHING (not that much either) and study study study. Do the extra credit offered, it's really easy and can make a difference.

Professor Malkin is a great teacher. She is enthusiastic during her lectures. It's obvious that she is very passionate about theatre. There is a requirement to see a play ("Buried Child" -- the quarter I took it) performed at Cal Poly. The questions she asks about that play are all questions on the visual elements of the play, so it's a good idea to actually go see the play. The class was based on one midterm and the final that are each worth 100 points (although she gave opportunities for 10 extra credit points). If you are good at multiple choice tests, then this class should be a piece of cake for you. But make sure you attend class because most of the test questions are based on lecture material...if you don't go or don't get someone else's notes, you'll probably be screwed! Anyway, I would definitely recommend Pam Malkin.

We watched movies a lot. The tests were multiple choice straight from the lecture notes. She gives everyone an extra credit assignment you do in-class. The only annoying part was sometimes she went on tangents and you don't know what you're supposed to write down. And we had to read loads of plays.

Hmmm...what to say. Well, Prof. Malkin is not all she's hyped up to be. She is very, very, very annoying and doesn't really deserve any credit for the way she presents the material, becuase it is incredibly easy stuff in the first place. I had the class three times a week and I stopped going after about the fourth week. I also skipped out on going to the required play. All I ended up doing was reading the plays (which are quick, easy reads) and doing the extra credit in class (even if you skip the class like I did, make sure and go for the extra credit day, because it is incredibly easy and worth a significant amount of points). Had I went to class this would have been an easy A, but it is so insanely boring. If you had it in the morning like I did, all you end up doing is sleeping anyway. If you're an engineering student who's looking for a nice easy 4 units that requires almost no work and can't hurt your GPA take this. Otherwise, unless you actually are interested in theatre, take something more worthwhile.

well, i must say that it is an easy class, but that is only because i did the 10 point extra credit assignment. She is by far the worst lectureer i have yet to have at poly; although i am a freshman. there is no direction in her lecture, therefore you don't know what to write and what not to write. she Also does not in any way give some type of organization as a basis for your notes. so, as for the question: does she recognize student difficulties? NO! so i gave her an overall D. read the plays cause they are easy, but aslo watch out for the specific lecture questions on the exam.

Malkin gave an interesting lecture. She is a great public speaker, kept me engaged in the lecture. Towards the end of the quarter, I was so burnt out on school and didn't go to class at all, just showed up for the final, so my grade reflects that. If you go to class and take notes, and review those notes, you'll do fine. Also, there are about 5 or 6 plays you have to read, but they're really short, it took me less than 2 nights to zip through them. I really enjoyed seeing the play that she required us to see as well. Your grade is based on 2 midterms and a paper. Pretty easy. No final. The 2nd midterm is on the final day. The midterms are multiple choice. She also gives opportunites for extra credit.

Malkin was really boring and made you not want to go to class ever. I don't understand why people say they enjoyed this class cause it sucked. The teacher just rambles about shit she says won't be on the test then throws it on anyways. I struggled to stay awake in this class everytime and i honestly only missed it like 3 or 4 times. This is not an easy A and if anyone tells you it is you should bitch slap them for lying to you.

I was expecting to enjoy this class but i can fairly say that it was pretty boring. the tests were definetely harder than they should have been, considering this is a THEATRE lecture class. I was for sure expecting a B, and i ended up getting a C in the class which completely boggles me because i got a C on both tests and got full extra credit - which she does offer - and it's easy, so you should do it. if you have to take this class i guess u should go for it and take her, because its not pain stakingly hard, but it's not as much of a breeze as it should be to get a B

This lady is a pompus theatre type. She LOVES to talk about herself and how AMAZING her directing is. Her tests are hard, i did all of the reading and did all of the extra credit. I couldn't believe I tried so hard and I got a C. If you go see her plays she will give extra credit. I just didn't like her or the class. She is average. At least she CAN teach. A lot of poly professors can't teach... Anyway, there is no homework except to read like 5 plays so your grade is based on 2 midterms and a final. I HATE THAT!

First of all I really hate theatre. I took it to get 12 units during the summer and fufill a GE. The class started off somewhat interesting, once she moved away from the history lessons and more towards what theatre is, that's when it got boring. As everyone has said you have an essay and two midterms. The last midterm is during finals week but it's not cumulative. Everyone who says she's a hard grader, must have some sort of (negative quality inserted here). The essay I spent some time on since it's a 1/3 of the grade and got an A. The class average was an 89. The two midterms I didn't study for. I got an A on both of them. The bonus points are fun to do. Overall I can say I learned something about theatre that I didn't know(or care to know) and I got an easy A. That's the point of taking classess like these.

This class was pretty cool. I enjoyed about 5 of the 6 plays we had to read. She doesn't write down a lot when she lectures so it is kind of hard to write everything she says. The material is pretty interesting and she shows a lot of movie clips. The seats are comfortable so it is relaxing. I woud reccomend her. She gives study guides before the two tests. If you know everything on the study guide, read the plays, and went to the required play you should get at least a B and probably an A. The idiots who got below a B just didn't go to class and didn't study. There are only two tests each worth 50% of your grade so don't blow off a test or you will be screwed.

Prof. Malkin is really a sweet lady who has a true passion for theatre. I found the class to be very interesting, but I enjoy learning about the history of theatre and plays, so make sure you think about whether or not you enjoy theatre. If you don't, maybe this is not the class for you. The class is based of 2 test, midterm and a final, which I found to be pretty easy, because I took good notes in class and read the plays. As long as you attend class and take good notes, as well as read the plays, you will do fine and hopefully enjoy the class at the same time!

She's very interesting. She grades pretty fair. She doesn't curve because there is no need to, and if everyone gets an A on a test then everyone gets an A; she doesn't grade against you, unlike other professors. I also loved the required (play)readings. I even kept the books. Taking this class heightened my interest in theatre, though I'm far from a theatre major, I'd like to take another theatre class.

Malkin is a great professor. I took this class expecting it to be boring. She presented her lectures clearly even though it was a 200+ person class. Her midterm is 50 Qs scantron. The final is exactly the same and is not cumulative. There was a requirement to see a play and write a 1 page essay on it. This is essentially an easy A. The play itself was enjoyable, too. TAKE MALKIN, SHE'S AN EXCELLENT PROFESSOR

Pam rules! There's not much more to say than that. Well, actually there is. Pam is an outstanding professor. She presents the material very clearly and makes it easy to take notes. This class is in no way a cake walk, but it's very interesting. The quizzes are on the required reading, and the tests are on the actual lecture. So, if you go to class everyday and read the plays, muc of the work is done. There is also a paper to write that makes up the rest of the class. It's all sounds basic, which it is, but do not slack. Just because it's a theatre class doesn't mean you can take it lightly. If you slip up on anything your grade will see the consequences. Do all the work, however, and you got a good grade. Pam was awesome. I was really worried about taking a theatre history class because of its dry subject matter, but she managed to breathe new life into the course. The main point is Professor Malkin has FUN lecturing her material which makes it easier for you to understand. She will always help you if you are confused and clarify any misconceptions. Her tests are relatively easy if you study hard from the preprepared outline she gives you before the test.

She is very dedicated to her work, and it is very apparent to see. She also loves history and english, so on the 2page paper assigned and tests, make sure your grammer is correct! However if it isnt excellent don't worry - she realises not everyone will love these subjects, but it is still good to be aware of them in relation to Theatre. She shows lots of video clips which make the classes interesting, and as long as you follow her study guides exactly, you shouldnt have a problem getting a good grade. If you have any questions/help wanted, she is very willing to help you out. A great professor!

Mrs. Malkin is an amazing teacher. She presents the material in an interesting way and makes sure it is completely clear. She is the only teacher I have had where I went to office hours for no reason, just to talk to her. When I told her I wanted to minor in theatre she imediatly offered to be my advisor and got all the paper work done within a few minutes. I only recieved a B in the class because she gives the most difficult multiple choice tests I have ever had and she grades very hard (grammer, spelling, etc.) on your in-class and take home essays. Even though this class is now a GE I DO NOT recommend you take it just to get rid of a GE requirement. It used to be upperdivision and she still teaches it that way. Take 210 instead.

I'm so fortunate to have been able to work with her and be her student. She is SO great, SO helpful, SO sweet. She always encourages me when I feel like I'm about to fail - she's just such a great person and she really cares about her students. Yes, I did get a C in her class and that's because you can't take the course lightly. It was my first quarter at Cal Poly after taking a year off of school (I transferred) and I delved right into theatre courses without being well prepared enough and I didn't study hard enough. My grade in no way refelects her teaching abilities. She is a wonderful and interesting lecturer and a challenging teacher. I am a theatre major and have taken three Pam classes and loved all of them. I read through some of the comments and was frustrated by peoples assumption theatre classes are easy. That is just not true, yes they do meet ge reqs but they are also theatre major required classes. You will be expected to read six plays, take two quizes, write a 6-8 pg paper, and take two essay based tests. The quizes are fairly easy if you have read the plays. The paper and Tests are not. The fantastic thing about Pam is she will revise your paper if you ask her a week or so ahead of time and she will give you a study guide for the tests that have everything that might be on the test. As a whole Pam is a wonderful compelling lecturer who really cares about what she is teaching and her students but it is in no way easy and will take up a considerable amount of time if you want a good grade.

At first I was very nervous about taking this class - after all it is a Junior level class, and I am only a freshman! However,Pamela Malkin was not only able to make her course interesting, she also made it understandable - if you attended class (since aside of the plays that is all that is on every test), she gives you all the notes in a nice clear manner, and also provides video clips to make the subject more vivid and exciting. As long as you study her guide for each test, you should get a nice grade fairly easy. She is very clear-cut with what she is looking for in essays/answers, and doesn't surprise you with any irrelevant questions on materials or anything outside of the study guide. You can earn up to 10 points for writing a reveiw of CalPoly's latest production, and that can go a long way. If you have any questions or need help, she is more than welcome to do so. An excellent teacher, I would recommend her for any class!

Cal Poly is not a liberal arts school, but Pam makes her students realize why studying the humanities is essential for developing personal character. Women's theatre does not include ripping on men, although it shows the history of women and some of the shit they went through. Pam is an incredibly educated, well-rounded individual, making her class well worth-while. I learned ssoo much in this class. I completely recommend taking this class as an upper-division GE. Be prepared for a lame theme paper (she's a hard grader), a mid-term, a final and two quizzes. If you read the material and pay attention in class, you'll do fine.

Pam is a fantastic teacher. Here is how to pass her lectures: write down everything she says. It's all extremely straight forward and organized. Her lectures are interesting and logically displayed. For tests: if it's not on the study guide, it's not on the test. Period. Blue book for both midterm and final. In essays and short paragraphs do not write anecdotes; get straight to the main point for your opening sentence. You read one play a week (it is this way in EVERY theatre lecture class, not just Pam's). There will be a quiz after each play (again, in all theatre classes). They are not complicated. Just read the plays (this includes the italics, or stage directions). You will write one paper (6-7 pages) on a play. Go for detail on whichever play you choose. In other words, read it more than once and take notes on every scene so you know what to write. If you do that, the paper writes itself. If you are having a problem, use her office hours. Pam is extremely approachable and nice. Speak up in class; it's more interesting that way. Be prepared to learn a lot of stuff you did not know. It is extremely interesting. Finally, there are no online notes or textbooks. You have to go to class to learn the material. So if you're looking for a GE to skim by on and ditch, this is not going to be what you want.

She has note cards, but basically she lectures off the top of her head IN OUTLINE FORM. It is soooo easy to take notes in her class, I couldn't believe it. You have to go to basically every period because there is no textbook-- the tests are all on her lectures-- but this was one class I always looked forward to. I actually made it through several two-hour periods without once glancing at the clock, which is usually impossible for me. I never had an interest in Theatre history before, but now I'm thinking about minoring in it. If you get an opportunity, TAKE THIS CLASS!
