He was a good professor, but my only problem with him was his blatant favoritism. If you participate frequently, he will love you. Also, if you get a good grade on the first essay, he will give you a good grade on everything else that you do. But he was good. The class was very interesting.

Hatch is hands down the best Professor I have had the pleasure of taking here at Poly. He is a young and passionate guy who cares deeply about his students and their success. The thing that I liked most about him is that he is enthusiastic and would never shoot a student down when they participate in class. The class is comprised of three essays and a final. You can revise the first two essays for a whole new grade if you need to. 11/10 would recommend taking Hatch any time you can!

Ryan is one of my favorite, if not my favorite professor that I've taken a class with at Cal Poly. I took his class the winter quarter of my freshman year and it got me to be super psyched about being an English major at a predominantly engineering/science university. His classroom is set up in a Socratic Seminar style minus the pressure to speak nor is it in a circular format. This being said, he does encourage you to speak as participation is a part of the grade. I usually hated having to speak up in class due to the fear of being shut down by my professors or classmates but the way that he runs his class is truly a welcoming environment for thought. The class consists of participation, 3 papers (which he gives meaningful feedback on), and an in-class final covering the three genres of literature discussed in class: short story/prose, poetry, and drama. As an English major, you'll have to take his class for 202, but after having him for 202, he made me want to take an upper division course with him in the future.

This professor is definitely one worth taking, regardless of whether you love literature or not, so long as you are willing to be present in the classes and think critically about what you are learning. For the most part the class is taught as a discussion; Professor Hatch does an excellent job of leading students to understanding what they have read by posing good questions and encouraging students to both add on to and disagree with each other on the complex themes being discussed. I have not yet received all of my grades but it does appear that he is a somewhat harsh grader--if you are looking for an easy A or B I would not recommend this class. However, if you want to participate in a class of active learning and thoughtful discussions, this is the class for you.

First time he taught in a huge lecture hall, so it was difficult to participate. You have to at least sparknote the readings intensely to pass the quizzes. And for the midterm, you really to study. It was not the worst course, but there was not enough work to get the grade you want, unless you actually work your ass off, which most people dont do in a GE. Good guy, but the lectures felt like he was performing a play. Really knowledgeable and wants us to succeed.

I wouldn't recommend unless you're looking to bomb your gpa. For a GE, this class is just super rough and it's freaking hard to get a good grade. He's a cool dude but needs to get on his students' level and at least give us the opportunity to succeed. I went to every class, took notes, actually read the books and shizzz still hit the fan. rip gpa :'(

Dr. Hatch is a fantastic professor who really actually wants you to learn, understands that almost none of his students in this class are english majors, and really hears students out when they share their critiques. He realized the quizzes were difficult and gave us an extremely easy extra credit quiz at the end of our final that gave us the opportunity to raise our grade 10% (TEN PERCENT!!!!!!) so I really don't understand why others are saying he didn't give us the opportunity to succeed. The tests were super straightforward if you did the reading and took good notes. I 100% think you should take this class if you need a super easy and fun ge and recommend it to everyone!!

He is awesome, I took him for a 5 week summer quarter and it was a bit rushed because of external circumstances, but he handled it well. The class was mostly discussion and very interesting if you have good classmates. There was one 1000 word essay at the end of the quarter and the midterm and final are in class essays that go to about 600 words.

As an engineering major I anticipated hating this class. I had very little interest in modern drama and expected a boring two hour class to sleep through twice a week. What I got instead was the most engaging and entertaining GE class I've ever had at Cal Poly. Professor Hatch conducts class as a discussion, with him providing deeper insight in between conversations with the students about the readings. He's a very fair grader who focuses more on original thought than whether you were "correct" about the meaning of the text, which is a typical flaw I find in many other English classes. He's also just a pretty cool dude in general who likes joking around and makes class a fun experience.

I wasn't sure what to think of Ryan when he first came into class, he kind of looks like a hipster. But he's actually one of the best professors I've had at Cal Poly. He makes a point to know every single person in the class's name within the first week or two, he always takes every comment you say seriously and never dismisses anything as incorrect or dumb. He really succeeds in truly making the class discussion based, where everyone is able to speak up and discuss the literature together. Ryan is also one of the truly nicest teachers I have ever had. He definitely cares about his students and wants everyone to succeed. He kind of feels like a hip liberal arts older brother... I made several friends in this class and overall actually really enjoyed myself even if it was kind of early in the morning and not a subject I ever thought I would like. Tip for taking the class: if you can find a video of the play performances online, it's very helpful to watch/listen to it as you follow along in the text. Makes dialogue way easier to understand.

I took this class during Fall. He is a good teacher and makes the class interesting, but he grades pretty hard. Its hard to get an A but a B or a C is doable. The lectures are cool and he is really nice.

I took Ryan's class in the Fall, and I thought going into it that the class would be dreadful. I couldn't have been more wrong. From the first day of class, you can tell that Dr. Hatch is extremely intelligent, kind, and passionate about his subject. You learn fast that he does expect a lot from his students, but it's a really rewarding class because you truly learn, unlike other classes. The plays themselves are fairly complex, but he does his best to discuss them thoroughly with students, and never belittles a students comment or thought. I truly felt fortunate to have him as a professor, and I would recommend his class to any student. There is a reason his polyrating is so high, and it's because this guy is a phenomenal instructor. If you don't slack off, you will really enjoy this class.

At first the class seemed great and fairly reasonable. Hatch makes his lectures interesting and engaging. He is great with lectures. However when it comes to grading do not expect an A unless you are a drama major or he likes you. After putting more effort in this class than my science major courses and still only receiving a B disapointed was a understatement. Do not take this class if you expect to be graded fairly. Hatch makes it clear that he does not care about effort, even though it is an elective course. He plays favorites and expects English major level work. Definitely do not recommend this class.

Before this class started I was terrified. I dreaded taking the C4 requirement and I also failed the GWR once before (as the exam) and was scared I was not going to be able to pass. I am a terrible writer and waited right before I graduated to take this GE requirement. I was completely surprised when I fell in love with the class. Every week you read one play that is not too long, and then you discuss it in class for the whole week. No homework, and one essay for the whole quarter. Passing the GWR was also super easy to do. Hatch was an awesome awesome professor, I was actually sad when the quarter was over I loved him so much. I told him I struggled with writing, and he ended up giving me an A on the final paper, giving me an 88% in the class overall (which I was happy with). Only thing I can see as a negative is you are graded on how much you talk in the class and I noticed some people did not enjoy that part. He grades pretty harshly on participation. Overall I loved the class and highly recommend!!!!!!!!!!!
