Dr.Lutrin is the most disorganized instructor that I have ever had. He doesn't appear to know a great deal about American Government, but often talks about Israel. Very strange! He appears to be strongly committed to Israel and I would not recommend him to those students who wish to learn about our system of government.

Great instructor. Knowledgable about the subject matter and very stimulating in class. A fair grader, although his exams are demanding. Good class.

Dr. Lutrin may have been a good professor about twenty years ago, but he is well overdue for retirement. He is fairly senile and he really seems like he doesn't give a care how students are doing.

This professor was very frustrating for me. I tried to keep up with the reading and I usually did. I read all the articles assigned. The lectures don't always seem relevent, I learned more at home about politics than in this class. Writing the term paper is the most I got out of the class, just follow all the dirctions given (like answer ALL the questions and tie the articles to BOTH books-- I lost points there). He's nice and funny, but he is senile (which is where I got frustrated).

Lutrin always comes to class at 15 after. Always!! He is very diorganized and I don't know why he bothers to assign a seating chart to learn everybody's names, because he can't even understand the chart to begin with. He always calls people by the wrong name. Just remember to get your 5 participation points. He is a weird guy but just read the god damn Christian Science Monitor's and you'll be good to go. Peace out

I think it _is_ fair to say that this teacher is overdue for retirement. My *mother* had him for her political science GE when she went here. The class was not hard...the multiple choice tests are pretty common sense, so it's basically just a matter of keeping up with the christian science monitor and reading the directions for the paper carefully. What bothered me about him was the dry, monotony of his lectures and the way he would write illegibly on the board and then underline everything he wrote five times. Also, I wouldn't expect a teacher in his place to make a completely neutral presentation on all topics, but on the other hand the class shouldn't turn into his own personal ranting forum.

Dr Lutrin seems to be very airheaded and cannot answer a yes or no question. I remember the first day of class and a girl asked, "So, yes or no, do we need to work on a political campaign?" He took 5 minutes to answer that simple yes or no. I hope all who take him have great independent learning skills or already know the material in pols 110. He will never learn your name unless you go to office hours and his seating chart is a joke. He always calls people by the wrong name. Although, I guess if you really cared about politics it is possible to have a long converstion with him. It is an easy class.

Lutrin is very eccentric, and going to the class is pointless, unless you are really worried about missing a few points. He will ask random questions from his off-topic lectures, but not more than one or two per test. The tests are very easy...all you have to do is read the chapters and the newspaper articles. Only go to class to get the articles assigned. Oh-show up the last 2 weeks b/c he goes over good stuff to put in your take home final(which is really easy).

First off let me tell you that Lutrin is the dumbest motherfucker I have ever taken. This idiot was my introduction to college freshman year. I am dumbfounded as to why he is still employed by the University. He should not be teaching at the high school level, let alone at Cal Poly. Attending class is pointless, you get to hear his um's every other goddamn word. He loves to talk about some stupid book he wrote with another moron about Isreali politics or some shit that does not apply to class, or any of our lives. This guy needs to be sent to the Atascadero mental hospital before he screws up any more poli sci majors.

While browsing through the listings at Polyratings I was shocked to see the name Lutrin was still listed. I took this guy four years ago in my first quarter at Poly. At the time it looked as though he was half way dead. I can not beleive he is still teaching. Do we have professor reviews at this school? Evidently not if this ass clown is still collecting a paycheck.

Lutrin does not know jack squat about political science. How did he get his doctorate??? He should know NOT to ask his student who he slept with to get into Cal Poly!! Well, YOUR WIFE!!!!!!! This professor teaches right from the book, so study that and you will do fine, and do not bother to go to class, because he does not teach anything that is relevant. To all students, young, small, tall, large, athletic, nerdy, PLEASE DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT TAKE HIM! He sucks. :)

Lutrin isn't as bad as everyone says he is. Do the reading, especially the newspaper. Tests are Scantrons and the Final is a take-home paper. His lecturing skills are average, but he makes up for it by changing it everyday, some days are videos, other days are discussions, and other days are lectures. Just raise your hand and participate in class and you'll do fine. Ask him questions because he is willing to take a lot of time to answer them.

Lutrin is terrible, Political Science is a subject that does not come natural to me and listening to him mumble his lecture (through hmms and ummms)only made me more confused. I basically had to read every page of every book he assigns to get a D average on test. The only plus is the Final is a take home and he does offer extra credit. My advice: If you have a hard time with Government, then take someone else or switch the class to cr/nc.

Wow! Lutrin was a bigger waste of time than I could have ever expected at Cal Poly! In each 2 hour lecture he would cover the amount of material that it would have taken a good teacher 15 minutes to cover. He always asks the class questions from the reading, only to find out that no one can answer them b/c no one has done the reading on time, so he'd get mad and waste even more time either staring at us in silence or trying tomake us feel like crap for having not done the reading. But when you have a bad teacher and have to attend horrible lectures (he takes role), your not motivated to put even more time into the class. The one good thing I can say about him is that each day we got tests back (scantron) he would also pass out the origional test questions to give us time to go over the ones we got wrong and ask questions. Then we'd spend 20 minutes arguing one question at a time and half of them we could get him to accept an answer previously determined wrong. Do not take him if at all possible! Especially if you already think politics are boring, please take a good teacher to give you a chance at learning to get involved. Not Lutrin!

Alright, so this guy is really, really, REALLY old, but he does recognize that most of the people taking the class don't have much interest in politics and tries to make it as painless as possible. Plus, he lectures on all the reading material, so if you go to class and take notes, you won't have to read a single word of the texts. Take him only if you have the energy to stay awake for his booooring lectures.

Professor Lutrin is old, and really really boring. However, u never have to go to class, but there is a lot of reading, and it is not interesting. He gave the option of an essay or multiple choice final which was cool. He never kept to the dates on the syllabys, and I think he had a sub for two weeks. He is pretty confusing, not to mention really rude to his students--which is actually sorta funny. Bottem line is he has been teaching for too long, plus I had a 79. 6, and he gave me a C!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the guy must be at least 100 years old. he says "um" for every other word and loves the mets. doesnt like to admit he's wrong, and his tests are hard, so take the essay option instead of the final because he's a fair grader if you spend a decent amount of time on your papers. but here's fair warning: you are guaranteed to be bored out of your mind in this class, and there is a ton of reading, including the new york times.

This guy is TOO OLD to be teaching. He must be like 80. I don't have anything against old jewish people, but this guy CAN NOT TEACH!!! He gets pushed around by the students about the term paper and doesn't know what he is doing. the first hour is wasted on him figuring out what he SHOULD be doing. When you get back from break he says he will go over the chapter but when he gets to it, all he goes over is the "You are there" piece, the prologue to the chapter. He is big on those. He also Makes you subscribe to the New York Times and assigns you to read like 4 articles a week and then you "discuss" them in class. HIS TESTS ARE RETARDED! ok, he numbered the whole thing wrong so tons of people got thrown off and got all their answers wrong. Then All of the questions had like 3 answers! He won't help if you don't understand his questions. This class is not worth your time. I can't believe I crashed his class. I really want someone to sit in on his class and evaluate this guy, he is not fit to be a teacher. He also likes to joke about how he talks to all these polititions like " I left Bush a message, but he hasn't called me back yet" if he doesn't know an answer. He rides his bike to school every day, even when it rains, so he comes to school soaking wet sometimes. It's kinda funny.

Carl Lutrin is old and has trouble presenting class material. He speaks very slow and repeats everything. He plays several videos, but you are on your own to read the text and prepare for the test. New York Times is required reading and there are test questions on it as well. There is one term paper, 2 midterms (50 Q's) and a take home final. Overall the class is fairly easy, but it is on you to study for the tests, which can be tough and cover a lot of material. Lutrin is old and boring, but the class isnt all that tough

The guy tries, but his method sucks--long, boring, monotonous. He has a tendency to repeat himself--a lot. The class had to analyze New York Times articles, which just might have been a giant joke. "Participation" is just saying _whatever_ is on your mind. No matter how stupid or off-topic it is. Actually, I'm not sure there was even a participation grade, despite what he said--I hardly talked at all. His tests were somewhat difficult, and the fact that he doesn't check if you read anything and the lack of homework puts you at ease, so when a test comes, you're caught off guard. As long as you study a bit, the tests are just a minor nuisance. He grades papers like complete crap--my friend's paper was 2.5 spaced, 14 font, and five line breaks between paragraphs, yet he manages a B. The class itself isn't terribly bad--you don't learn much, but you don't do much, either.

HE is an idiot!!!!! The class is so boring and you learn nothing. We watched a movie every class. There are only two mideterms and a final but he screws up on the grades. He told the class after he handed back the first midterm that he was curving it (it raised everyone's test one whole grade) but then at the last class period when someone mentioned it, he said that he was no longer curving it. On the second midterm he forgot to grade the backside of my scantron and I had to go to his office hours three times to have him correct it and every time he forgot to make the change in the gradebook!! He is so old and forgetful and you have to shout when you talk to him. The class was easy and I would say to take him IF he did not mess up on the grades. I should have had an A but he so messed up on the grades for everyone. He should retire ASAP

Lutrin is old and senile. the new york times readings are important for the tests, but the inclass discussions are a joke. especially when its clear that no one has read the articles. often, he forgets what was assigned, and he falls behind real quick. the 911 report was one of our texts, where we never touched it after the 2nd week. a lot of news clips which are interesting, if his lecture hasnt put u to sleep. there are two midterms are a waste of time...lutrin types them before he comes to class, and doesnt know the answers himself. if he gave back the the tests after, and not just the scan, we'd have the proof of his ignorence. The final paper...HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. actually, i was scared, seein how it had nothing to do with the class material, and instead, six, single spaced pages of which chapters we should have read. in conclusion, dont sit against the wall...or bring a soft pillow...too many neck cramps otherwise.

This professor must have forgotten what class we were in because the material taught did not have to do with the summary of POLS 112. He didn't understand simple questions we were asking him. Don't take Lutrin! I don't think he knows anything about polisci. He had us watch the news and read the New York times. Prof. Lutrin is INSANE!! He is WAYYYYY too old to be teaching, and he has no idea what he is doing. Not only do you have to buy the 2 texts for the class, but he also makes you pay for a subscription to the New York Times because that's where all of your homework is from. He never gives you a direct answer, if he answers a question at all, and he goes against his word. For example, one time he promised my class extra points on a test because one of the questions had more than one correct answer, and then when it came time to add the points back in, his statement was "I don't remember ever promising that." Even though the ENTIRE class of about 40 students agreed, he did not. Basically, if you get signed up for his class, DROP IT IMMEDIATELY!!!

So take his class, drink a lot of coffee before you go, and talk alot about whatever, and you will get a good grade. Professor Lutrin is a pretty kind son-of-a-gun. Problem is his gun ran out of ammo years ago. He's clearly intelligent but all his years of teaching have done him in. Be prepared; he'll make you read six to ten articles from selected New York Times newspapers per week and integrate the material into the tests. If you like to read long boring articles that's great. But he reviews in class, the articles you'll be tested on (so pay attention!). If you can avoid taking Professor Lutrin, do it!! If you can't, well you'll be all right; just take advantage of the extra credit assignment(s).

Dr. Lutrin is a nice sometimes funny guy...but as a teacher he failed completley. Going to class was a complete waste of time because he never went over any relevant material and you watch pointless movies (however he does usualy ask 2 to 3 questions of the tests about them). His tests are really easy, just glance through the reading and either go to class and listen to him summerize the NYT articles you have to read or read them yourself. It is definitely true that Lutrin is far too old to continue teaching, and that the train left this station a long time ago. However, Lutrin is clearly a very politically oriented individual. He understands a lot more then we could ever--as a direct result of his age too. His inability to teach is only due his body's capabilities, and it's unfortunate i could not have taken his class say thirty years ago. I believe he is knowledgeable, fair grader, and attempts to make the class interesting with the newspaper articles and interesting media clips. His class is not that bad, and despite the fact that he is not the sharpest knife in kitchen any longer. He suffices for an intro to comparative politics class, and the text book was pretty good too.

Dr. Lutrin is a solid POLS teacher. His lectures seem to run long sometimes but he has a very dry wit about the subject matter that I really found funny. Lutrin is a very nice old man. He DOES know what he is talking about, it's just that 50-60% of Poly students are Neo-Cons and sit there all class and talk about how great Bush is. If you read the books, which are actually good if you want to actually learn about the US Congress, you should breeze through this class. I am actually still taking this class at the moment, but felt compelled to write anyway... Dr. Lutrin is a peculiar little man. He always has the just-rolled-out-of-bed look about him. He is a die hard Mets fan, and if the Mets are losing, watch out, because he will flunk the whole class if they are taking a test that day. He has a unique sense of humor. When asked his opinion of the Civil War, he frankly said, "We (the North) kicked the sh*t out of the South." He isn't the most eloquent teacher I've ever had, but he is certainly a joy to listen to during lectures. I recommend him 100% because he makes the lectures fun and interesting to attend.

Lutrin amazes me because he somehow manages to hold a PhD. Give me a break. I have had many, many bad teachers in my five years at Cal Poly but none (and I mean none) were even remotely close to how bad Carl Lutrin was. I thought from the first day that he was dumb but by the end of the course I actually thought he was mentally retarted. His tests are ridiculous and his lectures have absolutely no relevance to the class. He knows nothing about the topic, yet acts like he is a professional. He is so sad that he will even lie to your face to make you believe him. Avoid Lutrin like the plague and, if possible, do the same for his wife. If you're a motivated student who's at Cal Poly for an EDUCATION, then Lutrin would be an excelent teacher for you. He's got a welth of knowledge in his noggin, unfortunatly he's sometimes bogged down answering stupid students' questions that they would have known the answer to if they had bothered to even skim the reading. Most of the complaints students have made here are extremly trivial and indicate that many student are not here for an education, but rather just for a piece of paper that says Bachlors of so-and-so. If you want to learn something from someone who's been there and done that, take Lutrin. My biggest complaint is the project and final we had to do. I would have rather had a test instead. I never made a name tag, and he never gave me any crap. The most important thing that you learn in this class is perspective. You have to be aware of your perspective and that of other people towards you. The text points out examples where a lack of perspective resulted in conflict.

I truly believe that it is time for him to retire. We watched videos in this class, had a healthy reading load, and went over NY Times articles almost every day. The only problem was that he would discuss articles that we were not assigned, and he would also frequently forget the material we had already gone over and he would discuss things 3 or 4 times. Going to class became increasingly difficult as the point of going was pretty moot. His tests were generally easy (if you kept up with the reading and took notes). I scored a 94 on the first test, an 83 on the second, and an 86 on the final (which is a take-home essay...not bad). But I received a final grade of B-. It makes no sense since I handed in extra credit and occasionally participated. So that is frustrating. Lutrin also would repeat himself a lot, and would leave the caps off the dry-erase markers and wonder why they never worked! He is very approachable but don't expect him to understand what you are trying to say at first. I wouldn't recommend him if you want to be inspired by a class. But if you think you can dedicate yourself to a few hours of reading a week, it's not too difficult!

Un organized. Extra Credit was cool and I learned a lot by having to watch informative movies. Overall worst lecture professor I have ever hat Cal Poly. I did not learn a thing this entire quarter.

This is my third quarter in a row taking Lutrin. When you first take him, you might think he's boring, but it's not all that bad. His class is not that demanding, several papers and tests over the quarter, and he offers extra credit. His mood does change, somedays he is really nice and others he can be a little pissed off. Overall, I would recommend taking at least one quarter with Lutrin, if you work hard you can get an A no problem, but if you slack off a little like me, you'll probably get a B.

I don't know why everyone has a problem with him. He's an extremely nice guy who enjoys listening to what students have to input. He'll even change the key to the test if you can argue that the question was either misleading or multiple answers apply (multiple choice tests). He does not assign too much reading and his test are pretty easy. The best way to study for his tests is to read the text and/or assigned work just before the test. How long "just before" is depends on how much needs to be done. The rest of you people who think Lutrin can't teach need to try to learn something first.

Lutrin...you need to comb your hair!!!...you look like you just woke up and came to class...I can not stand this guy...I have never had a prof. that had such a horrible speaking ability...my god...somedays you could hardly tell what he was saying..I counted one day how many times he said his famous "ummmmm" and "ahhhhhh" and he said it 1253 times in a little under 2 hours..His writing is just as bad...I can not believe this guy had a PHD...He writes like a 3rd grader...he makes you read NY times articles every day..and they are never on the page that he says they are...He is a nice guy but he needs to quit teaching....he does have some good opportunities for extra credit...but you have to watch some stupid ass movies....anyway..overall this class was easy..I maybe put 2 hours a week of effort into it...

Try to take another teacher if you can. If you can't, be sure to do the extra-credit. All you have to do is watch 3 movies and write a page response to each. You also get extra credit by "participating" in class. This means you say something when the class discusses the NYT's assaigned reading. Be sure to say something as much as you can, even if it seems unimportant. Once he gets to know your name, you'll get the extra-credit. The tests are hit/miss. He is very particular to his wording of the questions. Be sure to read each one carefully! To study for the quizzes, make sure you understand everything in the pink boxes that are in the reading. This is where he takes the questions from. You can read the rest of the chapter if you want to, but it doesn't do much good. Just study the boxes in the chapters. His lectures are really boring, and they follow the book pretty closely. He emphasizes the stuff he thinks is important (ie. the stuff in the pink boxes). I can't say this enough, study the boxes in the chapters. Lutrin isn't a good teacher. In fact, he should retire. But, as long as you READ/UNDERSTAND THE PINK BOXES, you'll be fine. You have to write one, 6-page paper for the class using foreign newspapers. Try to take another teacher if you can!!!

The class consists of 6 25-question quizzes, 1 group paper and a take-home final essay. Lutrin is a really funny guy. He says "um" and "ah" a lot, but once you get past that, he's a good guy.

Fine teacher, but a little dry in the presentation. I wouldnt suggest having her at 8:00 in the morning, might be difficult staying awake.
