Thank god he's getting removed. Honestly, you can read the communist manifesto and get a pretty similar experience. If you are down to have opinions inflicted upon you in lieu of actual learning, this is the class for you.

This was the most pointless class I have ever had to take. Not only that, it was actually a waste of time. He is SO opinionated and anything you say against him he just shuts down. His opinions hinder what he is teaching. He acts like everyone at Cal Poly is so racist or uncultured, when he really is the one that needs to open up his mind. He is rude and really biased when you asked him for help or his opinion for a paper. I can honestly say I learned nothing from him this quarter. He gives you 3 assignments and then bases 20% of your grade by giving random papers during class. Like I said, this class is so pointless so if you don't want to sit through a grueling 2 hour lecture, your most likely only going to get partial credit. Sociology material can be interesting and if you have to take this as a GE course you are SO much better off taking it with someone else who won't waste your time.

Rasch was the best professor I've had this year. He is nice, funny, and understands students on their level. He does not impose his views on others, even though he is opinionated. He opens the class for discussion, which is the basis for a sociology class. The course material is well structured and the lectures are enlightening. No textbooks and the assignments are interesting and few. Great professor that is unfortunately leaving next year!

I don't think people give him enough credit. I think he was a great professor & he's funny. His style of teaching is just different from the textbook memorization type. His way of teaching engages your thinking & I think students are just not used to having that kind of vague structure/ freedom. People are just getting worked up because the topics he teaches are social problems and they're difficult to teach without being slightly opinionated in the first place. Granted, he does get angry about certain things in class, but that's because it's a problem that everyone should be angry about. He's trying to teach a group of students who probably taking the class as a GE that don't really care about the material. You can't blame a professor for that. He cares about his students if you put in the effort. I'm pretty sad he's leaving because I would have loved to take another course with him. Any capable student should be able to at least attain a B in his class.

All Rasch does is talk about how horrible Capitalism is, how the world is ruled by white privileged males (he is a white male), and how we must stand up and change our country because socialism is so much better. His class is completed opinionated and is completely based upon his own beliefs. If you disagree with him, he will completely shut you down. I got a C on my final paper because he disagreed with what I wrote, even though my argument was based upon the sources he provided. He just didn't like my interpretation of the material. Its a very easy class to achieve a B or better in, but it was torture for me to sit through class listening to him degrade my beliefs and our country.

Dana is new at Poly, so I am not sure he has a grip on what Poly is yet. However, I learned nothing in this class. He is more interested in pushing his views on you rather than actually teaching you the material. With that said, this was one of the easiest classes I have had here at Poly. Throughout the quarter he got progressively angrier and angrier. I am sad to say that I learned more from the guest speakers than I did from the course material. Don't even ask what I was graded on because the syllabus was changed so many times I couldn't tell you. What I do know of my grade... is there was some how participation with no attendance or keeping track of who was talking or discussions. 2 response papers, 1 creative project, and a final group project with a creative project. Basically if you want an easy class to balance out your course load this is it. If you actually want to learn something and not waste two hours of your day, don't take this class.
