Dr. Martinez is the man! Microbio is a pretty hard class and he gets that. If you go to his office hours, he's ridiculously helpful with explaining the material from lecture and lab in a concise manner. If you ask him, he'll tell you specifically what you need to focus on for studying. Always friendly and always helpful and understanding too. I couldn't recommend a better microbio professor.

I loved Dr. Martinez!!!!!! He is such an outstanding professor. His lectures were all very clear and he has so much insight and experiences that he shares with the class. He is also super approachable and understanding. I was sick towards the end of the quarter and he was super kind and caring towards me! One of the most down-to-earth professors that I've ever had.

Dr. Martinez was a really cool guy. He understands that microbiology is a hard subject and does what he can to help. He isn’t the best lecturer (he basically just reads off his powerpoint slides), but his lectures are posted on polylearn so it isn’t super necessary to go to class. I still went to class because he notices when you go and don’t go and I was struggling in the class so I went to prove to him that I was trying. I also went to his office hours multiple times and he not only clarified topics I was confused about, but also often gave back points on questions I made valid arguments about. His tests were fair, all multiple choice, and completely based on his lectures. NO NEED TO BUY THE BOOK. I didn’t use it at all. You have to get an online program to take quizzes and do assignments and a digital copy of the book is provided when you buy the online program to help you do those. Do all of the assignments and quizzes because those are easy points. No excuse for missing points on those. This was a challenging class, but Dr. Martinez was a great professor to have for it! Take him if you have the chance!

Dr. Martinez is the best professor I've had at Cal Poly so far!! He is a great lecturer, his powerpoints are great and clear, he tells you whats important to know, and he makes microbiology interesting! i actually considered switching majors to micro at one point because he made the class so great and interesting. He is also super smart, he's an MD and has a PhD in virology. 10/10 would recommend.

Dr. Martinez is one of the best professors on campus. His exams can be challenging but are more than fair. Additionally, he understands student difficulties and does his best to help everyone succeed. I would highly recommend taking his class.

Dr. Martinez is an awesome professor! I signed up for his lab because a friend recommended him. The tests were quite difficult but fair. After a test I went to his office hours to look at the key, and if I could explain why a question was worded poorly, or even show understanding of the question I got wrong, then I could get a couple points back. Cool, right? He is always helpful and knows the pressures of being a student, and will always try to work with you so you can succeed. Oh, and he has a MD/PhD degree from Cornell, so he knows what hes talking about... Not an easy A, but I definitely recommend taking his class if you want to actually learn about microbiology.

Take this professor, he is better than any other professor you would have in Microbiology classes. Don't be fool if the class seems really easy at first, it gets really difficult after week 4 and so on. I had an A on the first midterm, then second midterm came and almost failed it and final was even worst. Don't get textbook because he will tell you to return it to the bookstore eventually. Know your lab material for the exam because majority of the midterm is from the lab material, for example, why selective and why differential. I am writing this because this was the brand new class microbiology department came up with and we were the first one to take it. He is really helpful, go to his office hour

I took this class as an elective for my biology minor. The exams are based on the lectures as well as the three labs. Dr. Martinez understands the material well and I had no issues clearing up misunderstandings after class. I personally found the material before the first mid term a bit dull, and struggled on the first mid term (as well as half the other class) but the course is curved at the end of the quarter.

Dr. Martinez was great. Very knowledgeable guy that loves to teach and is fun to talk to. His midterms were tough, but doable when you study the material. His final was purposefully made easy because he didn't want to fail anyone. I never thought learning about diarrheal diseases would be interesting, but he made it somehow. He also recently went to med-school and is happy to share any information regarding the medical field.

This is by far one of the most engaging and interactive I have taken at Cal Poly (I am a senior). Dr. Martinez does a fantastic job of keeping his students interested and allowing them to conduct productive thinking during the learning process. I loved the clinical aspect that Dr. Martinez brought to this class, the ways he taught us to go about "diagnosing" a patient were so enriching and eye-opening to learn. Dr. Martinez is also the most supportive professor I have ever known. He continuously put forth an effort to make sure students understood the material or let them know that they were welcome to ask him questions. Even though I had some personal struggles prevent me from performing well in this class academically, I feel at peace knowing than I'm walking away with more insight than I have in other classes that I received an A in. Dr. Martinez is one of the very best! If you are interested in the medical field whatsoever, I HIGHLY recommend taking this class with him. He is more than happy to write you a letter of rec and is super willing to help you find post-graduate plans that are a good fit for you.
