Tong, Philip  

Tong is a great professor who is very passionate about his subject. He knows just about everything there is to know about Dairy processing. He is very approachable if you ever have any questions, friendly, and encourages his students to ask questions. Being a dairy major I had to take his class, and I'm not particularly interested in the processing side of dairy(I'm a husbandry emphasis). So, the material itself was a bit hard for me to be interested in. The class itself wasn't particularly demanding at all; it had little to no homework and the labs were all very laid back. Tests were straightforward and as long as you pay attention you will do fine. I studied my butt off for his exams and easily got an A in the class. A lot of people complain this class is difficult because it is hard to be interested in dairy processing. But, it is never Tong's job to make you interested in dairy processing- its his job to make you understand it. And he does a great job of it. Hes a great professor!

Dr. Tong is a great person and really cares for his students. That being said, his lectures can be on the cut and dry side but right before an exam he gives you a study guide with basically everything that is going to be on the test. As long as you review the class powerpoint slides and answer the study guide thoroughly before an exam you should do fine. The final really brought my grade down though where I was at a solid A, got a C on the final, and dropped to a B. The labs/activities are super hands on and exciting plus they don't require too much post-activity work. We even got to make our own ice cream flavor and bring a pint home! Overall, I'd really encourage everyone to take Dr. Tong's class for I learned so much about dairy which I seriously can apply to my life, not only as a dairy science major but a college student and consumer faced with the ability to make my own decisions and choices. Dr. Tong tries to only present the facts and lets you decide for yourself what that means for you.

Dr. Tong is a great professor! Dr. Tong's overall passion and education for his industry is very apparent from day one. His lectures can be a bit dry, but always super informative. He's very open to continuing to learn as the Dairy Industry is constantly evolving and incorporates that into his class. The lab's for this class are great and you'll leave with an amazing experience and sometimes a pint of ice cream. This is a wonderful class if you've ever eaten a dairy product and Dr. Tong is a great professor to get to know!
