Straight forward, easy class. Jones is not a hard grader and many kids in my class got over a 100 on their papers. Tip: study all the slides for the midterm and the final, not just the study guide as the multiple choice section will contain material found on the slides, not the study guide. He also curves his tests to average out to a 82 so that helps as well. Two easy extra credit opportunities during the quarter also helped.

Professor Jones is a great addition to the history department. I suggest going to his officer hours and just starting a conversation with him... you will never be disappointed. Bring up a dictator and he will begin to reference cat puns surrounding them while also give a great historical perspective. His main area of study is Latin America but he is great and very well rounded. He is also from SLO and understands many of the struggles we as students face everyday. Seriously a great professor. Go talk to him in office hours. It will be well worth your time, I can guarantee this.

Jones is seriously awesome. You can tell he is very passionate about the material he is teaching, which makes lecture so much more interesting. He has a great sense of humor, and I always looked forward to his lecture. Jones understands students, and their difficulties, and is very reasonable. He gave us a very detailed study guide for the midterm, and we only had one paper due for the entire quarter, and it was only 3 pages long. Make sure you don't procrastinate on reading the book for the essay though, it's pretty dense. I would without a doubt recommend Jones to anyone at Poly, hands down. Not only is he an awesome professor, but he's an awesome person. I hope Poly keeps him around for a long time.

This professor, although extremely helpful in office hours and during lectures, provides powerpoints that are near useless. They contain the vocabulary and main ideas of the lesson, but fail to elaborate, which makes studying difficult. However, his midterms are never surprising, he always provides a study guide and rubric, and he understands the students' workloads. If you put in the effort, an A is easy.

He was a really good professor! Even though it's a lecture about a boring topic, he tries to make it interesting by saying jokes. His tests are easy enough to get a good grade on as long as you do the study guide and his paper is easy as long as you read the book (DO NOT AVOID READING THE BOOK) and go to his office hours (he will read your essay before you have to turn it in and he will give you tips), overall he wants you to get a good grade and it was an easy class for me to not stress about.

Professor Jones took two topics I knew little to nothing about (and cared even less about) and somehow made what would've been a boring lecture into a relatively interesting one. Two hours seems like a long lecture--and it is--but he provides a break in the middle and sometimes just lets you out early if he finishes. The tests and papers are very straightforward, he doesn't trick you or put surprise material in the course, and his grading is fair, plus he gave a study guide for the final. And he's very interesting to talk to in office hours. I'd definitely enroll in another of his classes.

Favorite class and favorite professor of the quarter, hands down. Jones took a subject that could have been intensely boring and instead made it so intriguing with his connections of history to modern day and his dorky and endearing jokes. The midterm and final are pretty easy as long as you do the study guides (even just splitting them with other people will do the job) and the essay also isn't too bad. Reading more of the book definitely would have made it easier. Highly recommend taking his courses!!

Dr. Jones is a very intellectual guy. For someone who is new to the school he really does know his stuff. I liked this class a lot, mainly because of the topic, but he was a good lecturer. I would fall asleep in class, but mostly bc I would sit in the very back of the room. So don't do that. Assignments were really easy (one essay, one midterm, one final) and I never read the course material he gave us online bc he would just lecture about it. Read the book i guess. Also his tests were kind of ambiguous (lots of "A and B" or "all of the above" or "none of the above") but hopefully he changes that.

He's super knowledgable about the topic and you can tell he loves what he does. The only problem I had with the class is that the tests have a lot of answers like D. "answers A and B" or E. "answers A and C". I felt like I really knew the material but when there are so many combinations of answer it really makes the test difficult. I thought I knew the material really well but the structure of his tests make it difficult to get a good grade. Overall, if you are engaged in the class and like politics and history then take his class then you'll do well.

Good alternative to the ECON classes D2 GE-wise especially with the workload consisting of only 1 midterm, a paper, and final. Young guy that's definitely gaining some experience still, with interesting choice in historical topics that kinda pertain to econ. Albeit being a light workload, getting a good grade on the midterm and final can be challenging to some especially with choices such as "A and B" and "All of the above" along with the powerpoints being too shallow concept depth-wise so definitely take good notes! I recommend having the study guide he provides as your note structure since it is already in order. The paper was not that bad at all; read the book/watch relevant videos to get yourself in the writing zone. The book was a bit "dense" it was muddled with numerous historical figures, but just focus on the major players concepts. Overall, I imagine this class to be a lot easier compared to the struggles found in past experiences with ECON D2's from other peers. Just take good notes and immediately question for clarification during lecture in case you lose track of who did what and where - which is 110% of what this class is all about.

Professor Jones was a great lecturer for the Political Economy of Latin America and the Middle East. The lectures are fairly dense with a lot of information to write down. The primary homework is to read and to write a paper on Bitter Fruit. The other homework is to read excerpts on PolyLearn before class. The tests are supposed to be difficult even though it's matching and multiple choice. I managed to do well purely by recalling lectures and memorizing notes, but I would probably consider myself an exception. Best course of action is to know that the test will be difficult and just study a lot. Professor Jones is a strong lecturer with a mastery of knowledge in Latin America and the Middle East. One of the best new professors at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Cal Poly give this professor a long-term job here.

Dr. Jones is a great lecturer. He makes the class interesting, and is very knowledgeable. The class is straight forward. One midterm, one 3 page paper, and one final. I highly recommend taking Dr. Jones. He's one of the hardest working professors I've met, and he wants to see students do well.

If you're someone like me who hates history, I definitely recommend taking this class. Jones is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about history, and sitting in his lecture is more like listening to him vividly tell a 2 hour story. He gives you a study guide on the first day of class of the terms you'll need to know the definitions for. Honestly, you don't even need to write down information about topics that aren't on the study guide because the test will be made up of questions solelyfrom the study guide. As for the class, it's a 33% midterm, a 33% essay on a book called Bitter Fruit, and a 34% final. Take this class!

Dr Jones is a really nice guy and a great lecturer. He seems to know everything about literally all history since the beginning of time. My only complaint with him is that his class is a GE and the class usually averages about a 75 on his midterms and finals but he keeps the tests hard even though he knows they're too hard for non history majors to do really well. Overall, if you don't care too much about getting a C in a GE, he's great and I liked his class. Otherwise, don't take him

I was not a fan of this class. Jones is very confident in his material, so much so that he comes off a tad bit cocky. I am definitely biased because I am not at all interested in the subject. The material is so specific that there's no background knowledge so it's all pretty much memorization. If you're into history then take it, otherwise I would do your best to take something you've got some primary knowledge about.

Jones is my fave teacher at Cal Poly so far. He is hilarious and somehow made material that should have been boring into something super funny and interesting. Definately take this class...there is no homework and he puts all of the slides online. Only one essay all quarter and two tests, one of which is a non-cumulative final. The tests are hard but study and you will get at least a high B.

Dr. Jones is one of the best professors I've had here! He is very supportive of his students and encourages learning material that is useful to everyone. He is very knowledgable on various areas of the world and is very straightforward in his exams. I took him for three different classes and got As on all of them and what I recommend is doing the readings, showing up to every lecture, and participating in class discussion. It helps a lot in understanding for the exams and essays. BTW the exams are exactly like the study guide so do not skip over that. Jones is super dedicated to social justice and exposing discrimination within history and the field of study, and most students find it very beneficial. Most people that do not like him were students he called out for saying something racist or sexist in class, but that's a small amount of people. He's a favorite within history majors.

HIST 214 was my favorite class. I've always hated history, but Dr. Jones makes it really interesting. He'll go past the surface of what we need to know and tell us stories and random facts about people and events. He's got a really great sense of humor that livens the class up even more. It's really worth going to all the lectures. There's a lot to cover, so you have to be taking notes the whole time. He has powerpoints on PolyLearn, but they are subtopics; they don't give detail. For example, a bullet point might say "problems," and Dr. Jones will address said problems during the lecture. If he skips it, it's prob not important, or you could raise your hand and ask about it. I suggest typing/writing bullet points from his ppt before class or during the 10-min break halfway through, then filling in what he says. 33% of your grade is your only assignment: a 3-page paper on the book "Bitter Fruit." You have to read the book to write it, but only 100 pages. Overall, this class has really altered my perception of the world and I've learned about things I never have before. I highly recommend this class.

funny guy but god damn is this class hell on earth. Very much so tailored toward history majors, which is unfortunate cause 3/4 is not. Lectures are useless, don't go. He makes a study guide so just google all the terms. Don't buy the reading book, google that too. But still, very funny guy.

Dr. Jones is a great professor who I'd definitely recommend to anyone! He's really funny and makes class interesting. There's one paper, one midterm, and the final (both tests are 50 questions, all multiple choice and matching). At the beginning of the quarter he gives you study guides for the midterm and final with all the terms and concepts you need to know for the tests. Definitely make flashcards for everything on the study guides, if you know them you'll be fine on the tests. You have to read the book Bitter Fruit and write a paper on it. The book is really boring and long and can seem overwhelming at first, but just make yourself a reading schedule and stick to it and you'll be fine. I only read about 5 pages a day and I finished in plenty of time to write my paper. The grader for the paper was really harsh, but when I went into office hours to express my concerns about my lower than expected paper grade to Dr. Jones, he ended up re-grading my paper and raising my grade! He also curves his tests which is really helpful. Take Jones if you have the chance!

Excellent professor who is very passionate about what he lectures. He is biased but acknowledges his bias and is open to listening to other viewpoints. Although his point of view is more correct because in history white people ruin Latin America and the middle east, which he says. The way he words some of his questions on tests is tricky but if you do the study guide you should do well.

This is a deceivingly hard class. Like it will wreck you if you're don't attend lecture. the only source of info presented in this class is purely from lecture, also if you're not a good note taker i would skip this class. When he goes through his powerpoint don't, and i means DON'T just copy whats on his slides, if you do this i guarantee you will fail. Take notes on what he says, and use the study guides he posts. The tests are made straight from the study guide and if something isn't on the study guide it will not be on the test. That being said, just about everything on the study guide will be on the test, but if you attend class and fill out the study guide you'll do fine. Also Jones is an excellent lecturer and he's hilarious, Id take his class again just to listen to him lecture, he's really understanding, and frankly the most entertaining and smartest professors I've had. So if you're someone who doesn't have a problem attending class and being attentive then take this class, if you can't do that I wouldn't even bother.

Amazing professor! He knows the material and is passionate with the Latin American history. I was already very excited for this class but he made it even better than what I expected. The inside stories and occasional jokes make the two hours go by very quickly. However, I feel like the course is a little bit unbalanced: we learnt more in depth about Latin America than the Middle East. As for grades, there is one midterm, a paper and a final (which is not cumulative) and the class is curve.

Professor Jones is an awesome professor as well as an excellent lecturer and I would recommend taking his because you will not regret the decision. The only pet peeve that I have with the class would be that his notes and the lectures could be all over the place but if you pay attention to what he says or attend his officer hours, you will be able to get the necessary information to do well on the midterm and an essay. The class consisted of a midterm, a paper, and a lecture all which were fairly durable as long as there is time and effort put in. Professor Jones is a knowledgeable guy in the field of Latin American studies as he spends his time there for several years and he's easy to approach when the student is struggling. He also likes providing extra credit every now and then which comes in handy when the grade is stuck in a border line. All and all, I enjoyed taking his class and as long as one studies what's on the study guide and read the book for the paper, one should be able to do well in the class.

15% of grade is just showing up and doing the readings and discussion questions before class (which he told us when he would be collecting). Final and midterm are MC and fairly straightforward. He gives you study guides for both. 3 page paper which requires you to get a bit more out of the book (either Song of the Cid or The Broken Spears) than is really there IMO. He acknowledged the areas of his strengths and weaknesses in different areas of world history. Probably the realest man I have had as a professor so far.

Dr. Jones is easily the best professor I've had at Cal Poly so far. He is interesting and really loves what he teachers. My class was from 8-10pm but I was so excited to go to it every night. I didn't love the paper we had to write, but that might be because I waited until the last second to do it and he assigns it at the beginning of the quarter. I can not recommend this class enough. It boggles me that he's not a tenure-track professor because he is such a great lecturer. A MUST TAKE

His class is pretty easy and straightforward as far as expectations and knowing what class is going to be like. He doesn't try to trick you on tests, and he's passionate about the material. However, He spews his opinions on everything, talking shit about the school, how he doesn't get paid enough, he forces his opinions on you, talks politics all the time with the world's biggest bias (dude, you're teaching at a public school, and Ag school, and half of your "facts" are wrong) and even was encouraging students to dress in all black, disrupt students who were peacefully trying to walk into the Milo talk by pushing them and trying to get them to push back and then film it to depict Milo's supporters as violent. So while his class is pretty simple, he's a lot to deal with everyday and completely unprofessional.

Professor Jones smells like soup. Seriously, he does. Just Kidding Professor Jones is actually one of the few professors who I feel comfortable around. He makes me feel like an equal. With that said, he is a great lecturer who deserves to be a professor at Cal Poly. This class is a lot of work, but its worth it in the end. There are weekly assigned readings where he asks you to write three possible discussion questions. He gives two tests and they are pretty straight forward. Just make sure to study the notes he presents in class and listen to the extra bits he elaborates in class. He also gives you a study guide to follow. See, he wants you to succeed. There is one major paper that is required of you by the end. A proposal is due and then the paper which is a 8-10 page paper. Its not as bad as it seems. He answers any questions you might have. Plus, he lets your classmates help out too. Take Professor Jones. You will NOT regret it!

Dr. Jones is a great professor, who understands the difficulties of the student. Professor Jones is a great lecturer, who has a masterful understanding of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. After every lecture, I learned something new about the people, who ran and profited off the slave trade, or the short life of a slave. This class is a mix of lecture and seminar. The seminar portion of the class focuses on the readings for that class. The book readings required a lot of time since some of the books (Avengers of the New World and The Diligent) run a couple hundred pages plus. These books provide valuable primary source insights into the slave trade that most survey classes overlook. The tests are mainly based on the key points in lecture, so focus in class and study well. I believe this class is worth the time and its historical content is still impactful and relatable to daily life. I think this class stood out as my favorite class in my final quarter of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
