I would avoid Blair at all costs. He seems to get off on illustrating the fact that he knows more than you. Plays favorites, if he likes you, an A is yours. However, he seems to have the uncanny ability to tell the difference between A and C students visually. Generally a bitter man who takes his frustrations out on the students. Has single handedly induced many students to leave the major. A REAL WINNER. Kind of like Mr. Rogers all jacked up on Zanax. Totally unapproachable. Born without a personality.

This is my 3rd year at calpoly... and this is the lowest grade I've recieved thus far. Whats even more disturbing, is that this is the class I put more effort into than any other class I can remember. I spent more time preparing for classes, more time studying for tests, and more time reviewing with other class mates, than I have ever before. Professor London's tests are way longer than 50 minutes would normally allow, so even if you understand the material really well, you may only finish half the test. He compensates by curving... so when the average grade is below 50 percent (which it was for a midterm), that becomes a C. Regardless, even though you knew the material really well, only being able to finish half the tests still gives you a C. I think the fact that the average is that low speaks for itself. I wish I had only taken the time to read this professor's evaluations before taking the class. I would definately recomend anyone to avoid this professor at all costs.

Dr. London is a very demanding teacher. I put in much more work in his class than I expected to, but this led to a solid understanding of the material (no pun intended). As a teacher, Professor London is very specific about what he wants. Every student has to sign a course contract where he or she agrees to participate in class at least once a week, bring questions to exam review sessions, and prepare for class by reading and answering questions ahead of time, among other (less-demanding) things. His exams, which are a combination of qualitative short-answer questions and math-oriented problems, are challenging. Dr. London is very excited about his subject, and can be pretty humorous at times. I failed to notice the arrogance or favoritism that some of the other reviewers did. He was helpful in his office hours, but he did seem reluctant to be available at other times. I found MATE 210 with London to be quite a stretch, but nonetheless a rewarding experience. According to some of the other reviews I can see that many students did not feel that way about the class. For that reason I would only recommend London to those willing to invest time preparing for each meeting and who are comfortable participating in classroom discussions, to a greater degree than they may have done for other courses.

London has an experiment running (I don't know how long it's gone on) for a new teaching style. Lecture consisted of about 10-15 minutes of actual lecture. London would basically do a slim outline of what was in the assigned reading and then leave it up to the class to ask questions. In the beginning (like the first week when it was chemistry review) this was fine. When the class started covering real MatE topics it went down hill. Multiple times I asked questions about the reading and a general answer back was, "I think the book covers that pretty well." If you're the kind of student that needs to be taught the material, London won't do that for you. This brings up the question, "Why go to lecture?" This question becomes even more valid when you take into consideration that there was consistently at least 5 minutes of silence in lecture because nobody had questions to ask. Generally I felt the class just didn't know what to study, what we were supposed to know, or what kind of questions to ask because London gave no hint as to what direction to take. Take London if you are willing to put in at least 10 hours per week of homework to get the kind of understanding he thinks we should have. For a three unit class the work load was not tolerable. Unfortunately it took me until the 8th week of class to figure this out. This is when I decided it just wasn't worth it so I took the F and will retake it with anyone else. Of course I will be out another eighty bucks because London uses a different book than the rest of the faculty.

complete ass. tried to get me to drop the class 3 times in the two weeks. i must not look like a dedicated student whatever they look like. shows big time favoritism, if he likes you, you'll do fine. if not, get ready to bend over and take it. is probably mad from gettin his lunch money taken from him repeatedly through high school. his lectures are useless. is totally unapproachable. avoid at all costs. AT ALL COSTS.

If you are a freshman, DO NOT EVEN ENROLL IN HIS CLASS. This is because the first day you go to class, he said "in his experience, no freshman had ever gotten more than a 'F' so drop this class now." Don't screw yourself over by even putting him on your schedule in the first place and waste a precious spot that you could have gotten another class instead. Even if you are a MATE, take anyone else; you will learn what you need in your other classes. Especially if you aren't MATE, you probably don't care too much about this class, so don't waste you time taking him and having to repeat later. Bottom line: if you have to either take his class or delay your graduation, delay your graduation.

There are MANY reasons not to take London. The thing that really screwed me over was his test length. He makes the test longer than the time permits, and assumes that the curve will correct for this issue since everyone has the same disadvantage. He doesnt realize, however, that some students naturally work a lot faster on tests than other, and some students naturally work a lot slower on tests than others. Most people would agree that this happens regardless of how well you know the material. I for one, am generally a slow test taker. For his first midterm, I had ALL the topics down and would have been able to answer every question on the test if I had only had enough time. I ended up only finishing 3 and a half out of 6 problems. This ended up being a 54%, but with his curve it was a C. Hardly comforting for how well I knew the material. When I talked to him about it, he was a complete ass, and told me that I didnt participate enough in class. His answer to any problem is simply that the student didn't do their part. He is extremely arrogant and assumes that he's always right. Furthermore, a lot of his grading is subjective, so if he doesnt like you, be prepared to take it. The fact that he has favorites is not a secret.

This guys is a freakin jackass. He has no idea what teaching is. He pretty much expects the students to learn the material on his/her own. A total ego maniac too. His whole purpose of teaching seems to be to show all his students how smart he is. The only reason any one passes his class is because he curves everything. We took a quiz and out of 15 points the average was like 1.6, and the high was 4. He told us it was our fault for doing this poorly when we hadn't even covered the material in class yet. His teaching method is that the student should read and do problems before class then come ask him questions during lecture. He only lectures for about 10 mins. then the rest of class is for ?'s. I don't know if I've made him sound bad enough but he has to be the worst prof. on campus. STAY AWAY. Even though everything is curved, it's not worth it. He expects you to know the material as well as he does, while pretty much learning it yourself. It sucks.

note: this guy has changed significantly recently. disregard the old ratings. he is one of the best professors ive ever had. yes, his class is very difficult and its supposed to be an easy A. if you take anyone else, it will be. but if you do get stuck with london, he isn't that bad. he is on time ever day, excited about the matierial, and always has great demonstratoins, examples, and class activities. his class is very interactive, and he really wants his students to learn. I also had him for mate 215, the lab. it was good, except the reports were long and tedious. anyways, i worked my ass off for the B+ i got, and felt like i deserved an A. His grading is very picky, but if you go to class, you'll usually know what he's looking for anyways. the class average was around a 50%, but the guy curves to make up for it. just be prepared to put some effort in.

Blair London says he LOVES teaching, but the problem is he does NOT love his students. His style of teaching is quite forceful (he calls on you to answer questions, and if you don't know he makes you guess something, then gets mad at you if it's a bad guess) and he is also quite unclear in his explanations. When you DO ask questions it's a gamble, because he makes people feel like idiots for asking legit questions. His tests are HARD. Class averages are around 50%. He makes an easy, enjoyable class into a hard, impossible 10-week headache. The worst part is he teaches with NO TEXT, so if you have questions your only option is office hours. He might make you feel stupid then, too. If you're up to a challenge, take him. You'll learn a lot from the experience. I actually feel sorry for him- someone with such little love for people he should be encouraging and helping must be miserable in more ways than one.

One of the worst proffesors I have had so far. His teaching style is more on the level of a middle school science class than a college engineering course. Many of his repsonses to legitamte questions are vague or just unanswered. There is no book and the only material is online handouts for which the answers are one sentence and explained poorly. He wastes time asking everyone questions when he should spend time actually trying to teach the material effectively. Averages on all the quizes and exams was right around 50%, this should give the clue to either change the exams or change your teaching/information given. He seems like a nice person and eager to teach but the bottom line is he shouldn't be, unless it was maybe a middle school class.

London is a teacher because he would never make it in industry. He is so abrasive that he alienates his students even when he may be making valid points. He enjoys the power of being a professor, this is illustrated by his uncaring attitude and extremely difficult tests. He was banished from campus for nearly 2 years following an extramarital affair with a student. This is suprising since I thought he was gay, it must have been some attempt to prove he is a man. My advice: come out of the closet, embrace your sexuality and stop being such a mean, vindictive teacher. Regarding his teaching, he has several activities which are thrown at you and if you dare ask a question be prepared to be ridiculed and belittled. Avoid him, but if you do get stuck with him just follow his rules and stroke his inflated ego, all the while remembering he is just a scared little boy hiding in academia

Reasons to take London: 1) You hate your GPA. 2) You want a comeback to students complaining about Locascio. London is arrogant and does not listen to students. He does not care about complaints with the way he runs the class. His tests are amazingly hard. He is useless as a teacher.

DO NOT TAKE LONDON! Reasons: 1- He tryed to make tests on saturday while class was T/TR 2- If you don't get above 35% on the quizes before a test the best you can do on the test is a 70% 3- If you don't get at least a 90% on what he considers the easy part of the test then you can't get above a 70% on the test 4- In the class I had there were lots of equations and problems to solve, London didn't do any example problems and usually covered the equations by writing them on the board, giving out a worksheet, and telling the students to figure out how to use the equations 5- London doesn't use a book, so all you have to go off of is his lecture and the handouts that he gives you

hmmm... how to put this... yes i did fail the class, that's obvious. I did everything i possibly could at the time to pass. I did all the homework, redid all the quizzes, midterms, and homeworks, AT LEAST once. I went into his office hours AT LEAST once a week, but i still failed. The reasons? 1.) the amount of material the class covers is massive, and what he wants you to deep process requires WAY more time and effort than allotted. 2.) He gives you everything you need to do to at least pass, but to get a good grade, you serisously have to know your stuff. He puts half the midterm as previous homework, previous midterm, or quiz problems, and the other half as stuff you really have to think about. The other half of the midterm, you have to have a deep, deep understanding of the material he teaches. This requires real thought and he won't spoon feed you this part. If you don't know the material to just wizz through the old problems without memorizing the steps, go study some more. 3.) He tried this thing where if you didn't score above a certain percentage on previous turned in work, you weren't allowed to get higher than a C on the midterm. That's serisously discouraging and WRONG. but i will say this, as wrong as it is, he wants you to pass for whatever his reasons. so if you have him, work hard to do well every time. 4.) i just didn't have the time to put into this class and was used to teachers spoon feeding me answers and telling me how to think about the material. If you are the type of student who really loves to learn and feel around material with your brain then take him. I would take his class again just to show that i got the sh!t at the end. I don't know how it's going to be with following quarters, but watch out. this guy likes to experiment.

I wrote the below, and i forgot to say this. even though i would take the class again, i would do it to really just shove it down his throat. If he knows that you're not at mate, or if you don't really care about the class, he won't care if you pass or fail. everything that everyone says here is true. He's forceful with the material AND will make you feel stupid in class. he's judgemental and you can tell if he thinks your stupid or not. He basically gives up on lost causes and lets you know it. He picks favorites and is so much easier on them in class.

Yes, i did get an F in londons course, so take this how you will. I signed up for his class without first reading his ratings on this site, and by the time i had it was too late to change. However, the first few days of class seemed alright so at first i was not too worried. Things quickly went downhill though. London does know his stuff, but his ability to present it in a structured manner is piss-poor at best. His lectures notes were back and forth all over the board and he would not pause to explain things further if we didnt get it. He also does not use the book, which basically leaves you high and dry if his notes dont help you because there is no textbook to follow along with and teach yourself. He also does "stretches", which were an enormous waste of time at best. They are a warm up activity at the begining of class meant to get your brain going, or so he says. However, some of the stretch problems were literally as obscure as asking a history question in a math class, but we as students were expected to make the connections on our own even though it may have been material we had NEVER once seen. It seems kind of counter productive to ask us questions on material first, and then teach us the material second. Basically, stretches wasted 5-10 minutes of class everyday while we all sat there with blank stares and pretended we knew what was going on so he wouldnt get irate. Next, activities. These were maybe the only reasonable thing we did in class, basically a worksheet pertaining to whatever the lecture topic was. These were only helpful though because we were able to work on them as a group, and with our collective thoughts we might actually be able to finish them. If we passed his alotted time for either stretches or activities, we were expected to finish them up outside of class even if we had no idea where to start. He also has a VERY time wasting habit of calling on people to answer questions when not one person has a clue to the answer. He would ask a question, call on someone, and every single person in the class had no idea what he was asking, but he would sit there and egg the person on to come up with the answer while we sat in silence for sometimes up to 5 minutes. Or, if someone else did have the answer, he would not redirect attention to that person, he would just stand there intimidating the person he called on first. Do this 2-5 times a class and we were wasting a lot of time sitting there doing nothing while trying to get a BS answer. This is all time we could have spent reviewing or covering material more in depth, both of which were severely lacking in the course, but london wouldnt have it. his idea of curving on the first time (which the majority of us failed) was to add 20 points to everyones total because "maybe the test was a little to long". This bumped the class average up to about a 58% i believe, a clear indication of this teachers ability to convey course material and then plan tests accordingly. He also changes his testing/grading/class structure almost EVERY quarter. for a guy who has supposedly been teaching awhile, you would think he might have some sort of system by now.........NOPE. Obviously he has no idea what he is doing. His reason for not curving in a normal fashion when the grades are all clearly horrible: He said one quarter he tried curving the average to a 70 or 75% and had students who got A's coming to him saying they were upset because they didnt deserve an A...........do you know anyone who would say this? Excuse me, professor, you gave me an A when i had the highest grade in the class, thats so unfair.......please london, you are a horrible liar. When he became aware of the classes displeasure with the course about halfway through, he took 20 minutes at the beginning of a class to "hear" some of our opinions on what to change. We all thought ok maybe we will get some problems sorted out now....hardly. Every suggestion we made he took personally, became defensive and gave various BS reasons why his way was better. We were lucky at best to get him to post the answers to the stretches/activities online before the tests, but still that can only help so much. He made it sound like he was open to our ideas, when he maybe took into account 5% of what we said. He also has a complete hard on for this software package called CES. You have to buy it for $2 at the beginning of class, no big deal really, but the software is useless. Basically he thinks it will back him up because he cant teach. You are essentially expected to learn the software on your own, and then apply it to class is very worthless ways. For instance, one of the parts of the tests was basically memorizing what certain polymers were used for. Not general things, but rather remembering that the turbine blade of a 747 is made of titanium alloy while a lego block is made of ABS plastic and a screwdriver handle is made of some other polymer. He said this will be VERY important later in our careers. I talked to a lot of real engineers about this that are in industry, they gave me funny looks when i asked how important knowing stuff like that would be. Oh, and if you misplace even one letter in the polymer name that could be like 10-25 letters long, the question is WRONG. doesnt matter that you spelled out the full name of ABS, clearly know that that is the answer, if you forget just one letter its wrong. For his teaching ability, the sheer amount of information london expected you to know for the tests was just absurd. Maybe things would have panned out better if he were a better teacher, or put his expectations inline with his ability to teach us the material. He swears materials is the most important thing we will ever learn, pull you head out of your ass london and get off your high horse. Most of us were not MATE majors and that is the only course we will have to take. He doesnt get that we all had other, maybe even more importan t things in our lives than materials 210. To get a grade on his tests, you dont have to know the material, you just have to know what he said verbatim and explain everything in his words. Even if you explain a problem in your own terms in a sensical way, its wrong because you didnt hit his key words and phrases. In short, do NOT TAKE LONDON. There are other professors that teach this course, including Neihbur, Savage and Rainey, all of whom are awesome teachers, willing to work with students and very helpful and personal guys. London is the exact opposite, so dont waste your time on this clown when you have much more effective and accomplished professors to choose from.

I thought at first that I would expound on London's flaws but I would only be echoing what was said before me. Even though I did well it was an empty triumph. I had the benefit of working at home for a VERY understanding employer and so could waste all the time necessary. If you are truly masochistic go for it. On the plus side I did learn a whole lot of material but could never find the right way to express it on exams. The most nit picky thing I can say is that his essay questions should be changed to short answer because, as was said before, he is looking for specific words and phrases not well written answers.

London is a really good teacher. He keeps you awake and interested. Its too bad he expects you to know 3 quarters worth of material in one quarter. I studied more for this class than any in my life and I recieved the lowest grade I have ever gotten. The grade is solely based on two midterms and a final. I failed the first midterm (I admit I should have studied a bit more. But I recieved well above the average on the 2nd midterm and the final, and I still recieved a D. Did you know that legos are made of Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. If you take this course, you will. In fact, memorizing the spelling of various plastics and one specific niche they are sometimes used in will make up a large portion of your grade. Course consists of 2 tests + final. 20%, 30%, 50%. The scores on the second test for my class broke down something like this (best I can rembmer). 0-50: 4, 51-70: 4, 65+: 1. The man fails as an instructor. I know it sounds harsh.. but it's true.

Prof London expects way too much from his students for this course. The class average at the end was about a 50%, but he curved it so that the average would be a C. He'll make you memorize a lot of useless things and just regurgitate one of them back to him on the test for one measly point. It was just a big fat waste of time! All he does in class is hand out a bunch of "activity" worksheets, make you do them, and discuss the answers with the students around you. No one could do those activities because he rarely lectured. He expected us to just read the book on our own, and come to class prepared. Sorry, but if I paid for this class, I expected the prof to TEACH, not tell me to read the book and do stupid activities in class. I would NOT recommend prof London, espcially if this subject is not within the scope of your major (like CPE's).

I took this class a while ago, and was helping a friend register just now and was helping my friend pick out a teacher from the list of 215 profs. We didn't see one that we knew so we polyratings the new ones, and while we were here, I figured I'd show him how lucky he was that London was not one of the possibilities. He didn't believe me how bad this guy was, so I took him to this page... Well, you can see for yourself what everyone thinks. He is probably the lowest rated professor on this site, and he has many ratings, so its not just one nutbag bringing him down. His demeaning attitude, rudeness and annalness just about drove me over the edge. This class is not supposed to be hard, and as an ME I figured I'd get a break before I drudged into my thermo and fluids classes, but seriously this man made me hate life like no other. I'm not a MATE, so maybe, I dont care too much about this stuff... Ugg its a support course for most of us. Ur tests are rediculus and I wanted to die after sitting through class with you. A lot of people hate on London. But he isn't THAT bad. I mean his lecture was harder than normal, but I felt like I really learned a lot of information. His teaching style is weird, to say the least. 'Activities'(worksheets) which he makes you do in class before teaching the material completely. Bottom line - If you aren't a MATE and want to have it easy, avoid him. If you are a MATE consider taking him, he may be a little harder, but you will see more content than the other sections, all of which has proven relevant.

London is a great teacher, yeah right, maybe if your only competition is Idi Amin and Pol Pot...Yes some have argued his greatness. But deep down he is a very dark, troubled soul. Spend several years with him and you will see him for what he is -- a fraud who could never make it in industry because he can’t work with anyone. Anyway, there will always be the few who think he is great, remember even a broken clock is right twice a day. [...] [D]on’t let department spin or Vanasupa’s lies make you think otherwise—the department is deeply dysfunctional and I feel sorry for people actually paying to be “professed to” by these clowns

Professor London is extremely knowledgeable in the subject matter and the way he structured his lectures works well for some of the people when they get used to it. There is a ton of information to cover in this course, so it's understandable to have high expectations for students to remember a large portion of the information, however he graded this course much harsher than necessary. For example he would mark entire questions wrong for misspelling a word which in my opinion is a little extreme... Also, Professor London would single out specific students in class from time to time if they don't complete the in-class activity in time, are caught using a cell phone, etc. It's okay to have rules for your class room, but to single people out and grill them for sometimes several minutes in front of the class is completely unnecessary. My last comment is that he also is fairly hard-headed when answering certain questions, particularly if he had already covered the answer to the question in lecture. It is understandable to expect people to pay attention in lecture, but at some point people WILL miss information being covered and Professor London refuses to accept that. TLDR: Unless you are a MatE major or someone who really wants to get a deep understanding of the subject, don't take Blair London.

Be prepared to put in more work than Calc and physics. He’s a pretty good teacher. He’s obviously changed somewhat since his reviews from years ago. Very meticulous grading. Average on quizzes was a 59%. Average on the midterm was a 55%. Curved up by 20%. Wants you to learn the stuff which I respect.

His lectures were so incredibly unorganized, he would jump around topics and never give full detail on anything. Then on the test he would expect you to know the smallest detail about every material. Take any other proffesor and MATE 210 is an easy A, take London and you will take an L.

Apparently London hasn’t taught this class in a while, and I see why. He is unable to understand that these student of nearly every engineering major don’t want or need the knowledge of a full on materials engineer. Instead, he teaches his course like a 400 level materials Class and grades almost as hard. For a class I thought wouldn’t give me too much trouble, I’ve spent more time on it than the rest of my other classes combined. He also does these “activities” in class where he expects you to fill in information he hasn’t taught yet. Its ridiculous. 90% of the students just zone out and wait for him to get on with the answer and its a waste of everyone’s time. To get an A you’d have to take 8 units. Getting a B was tough with 14 units. Don’t take London if you can avoid him.

I felt that this class was much harder than it needed to be. I was often confused and frustrated in class. London uses abbreviations, so good luck remembering what they stand for when reading your notes later. He knows a ton about MATE and I felt like he tried to dump it all into my brain in too short of time and in an unclear way. The information itself was very interesting.

Before coming into this class I already knew it was going to be difficult based on what I gathered from polyratings. But holy hell it was probably my hardest course and definitely the one I spent the most time on despite MATE 210 supposedly being one of the easier intro courses. Like others have said, Blair London's lectures are an information dump onto the students. He lectures poorly and cannot adjust to the needs of the class. Ask him to clarify and he will tell you the same thing several times until you pull back so the lecture can continue. He is of no use in office hours either and is completely unapproachable. The worst thing about London is his grading. Typically, a thorough understanding of material would get you an A or B in most courses. However, London doesn't seem to grade based on your understanding but rather the tiniest of details. If you're not saying what he wants in exactly his words expect no credit on a question. AVOID LONDON AT ALL COSTS. I came in expecting the worst and my expectations were confirmed. Sure I got an A but that's only because I spent a ridiculous amount of time studying for a class. DO NOT TAKE LONDON.

London is now one of my favorite profs at Cal Poly because he is one of the few professors I've had who was really excited about the subject matter he was teaching. The MS&E department created MS&E pins and he proudly wore his pin every day to class (and gave the entire class pins as well). London took a real visual and hands-on approach to teaching. Every class period he would draw cartoons on the board, bring in demonstrations, and give us class activities. I'll give you a couple of specific examples. To make us understand interstitial diffusion he had the entire class (only 8 people) stand up and form two rows of four people to simulate the atoms in a metal. He then sqatted down (to represent a small Carbon atom) and ran around and between the students (while squatting) to illustrate how interstitial diffusion works. On the first day of class, London brought in a wire hanger and a blow torch. He showed us how heating up the hanger changed its properties. Before the hanger was heated - it could hold a text book without permanently deforming. After it was heated, it could not hold a text book without permanently deforming. The blow torch was pretty cool! He got us to remember how thermoplastics and thermosets behave by comparing them to cheese and pizza crust respectively and got us to remember the purpose of tempering a material by comparing it to heating up ice cream. Because the class was so visual and hands-on, it sometimes felt like London was teaching the class to elementary school kids. However, the amount of material that he expected us to know was no where near elementary school level. The midterms were very long and detailed. I studied a lot for the midterms and ended up with a 81% and 79%. However, the scores on the midterm did not reflect the grade I received. London was much more interested in having his students enjoy learning about materials than having them worry about grades. I loved this course and I would recommend taking it with London.

The first thing I must say is that Dr. London no longer teaches this course in the manner that all the reviewers who disliked him experienced. I took Mate 211 (essentially Mate 210) with London at 7:40 AM and without fail the man came to class everyday prepared and EXTREMELY enthusiastic about the material he was presenting that day. He presents a lot of material per class but always has a plan and presents it very clearly; he has this way of boiling down some of the most complex ideas into fun cartoons or easy to conceptualize analogies. See the following review for specific examples. In our class, we had periodic quizzes instead of homework assignments (although he did suggest homework problems and provide solutions). The quizzes were detailed and often challenging, but generally the material came straight from the notes. The class also had three exams (including the final). The exams were extremely thourough and often were partly focused on pushing the student to new levels of understanding by asking questions in which the student needed to apply the general ideas learned not just regurgetate them. This approach often led to what felt like low scores and poor understanding, but in actuality this was not the case. Dr. London also does not approach grading the class anywhere near a standard 70-80-90-100 grade break down; instead he generously curved it based on the class results. Dr. London's approach leads to a very in depth and clear understanding of the material. This class and Dr. London will continually challenge you, but in the end it is definately worth it.

PLEASE note that MATE 211 is an HONOR class for honor student. Please keep that in mind when you read the reviews written by people who took that class. If you are readying this, you probably are not in the honors program and you probably don't feel the same ways as those students who took 211. Only if you loves the subject, London can be a good teacher because he loves it too. However, you WILL NOT get much out of him if you don't share the same enthusiasm, and you WILL get a very bad grade. If you DON'T care about your grade and REALLY want to learn, you may consider taking London's class. But for most Cal Poly Engineering Student, you should AVOID HIM AT ALL COST.

I only took the lab portion of this class with London, but that was enough. His teaching isn't too bad in lab, but yet again you and your partners pretty much do everything yourself anyways. This class, as he put it, is his child, and therefore he expects you to know everything about materials already. I took the lecture portion the quarter before, and the labs actually do help to reinforce the ideas. Just remember to never be late, always wear long pants, and always wear closed toe shoes. These labs actually take all three hours, so never plan to get out early, and always read the prelab information before class because you're quizzed on it at the very beginning of every class.

People need to stop complaining about this professor. I was registered for a different one, but my section got cancelled and I was forced to take London and was not looking forward to him after reading all of these negative reviews. I was surprised as to how easy he was for lab. He is extremely helpful if you ASK questions. If you have a problem with understanding something or what he wants, ASK him, he WILL tell you exactly what you need. At the end of each lab we would even show him our lab write up and he would tell us what errors we needed to correct. There is no reason you cant get 100% on each lab. There are also no midterms or a final, just a quiz at the start of each lab on the lab reading. This is extremely easy and if you read the lab once you should be able to get at least an 8/10 on the HARD ones. Take him for lab, he loves MATE and will make sure you do well if you are motivated to get a good grade.

In lab he's a total sweetheart and is incredibly helpful. A lot of complaints are about his obsession over details. Guess what-it's college. If you're taking him, you're probably an engineer. A huge part of engineering is precision and attention to detail. I feel like Professor London really helped me improve my precision and work ethic in his lab, and I'm really grateful to him for that. The other complaints about his personality and voice and stuff are obnoxious, mean, stupid, and completely irrelevant.

Blair London is a poisonous, pathetic excuse for a man. He wakes up every morning with the intent of making himself feel better by making student feel dumb. In class he slithers around the room like a damn snake and looks for reasons to yell at students. He allows you to use your phone as a "polylearn" device and will give your whole group an F on a lab if you're using it for anything else (calculator function included). His class is pretty easy, as long as you pre read the labs and work quickly in class. Lab always goes 3 hours. Each lab is 40 points. 30 for the lab, 10 for a pre lab "reading check", with intensive questions. I am 6000000% sure that Blair London is a virgin. He gets off to proving students wrong. His voice is so excruciating it turns off deaf women. Quite simply, Blair London is a punk bitch.

People forget London is a sexual predator, he (I mean "it") slept with 2 students and got one pregnant, this all happened a long time ago, but it hasn't changed its character, it still does its best to demean and badger students. To think it happened and it still got tenure, despite the lawsuits. Then there is the sidekick, Vana-licka-lota-pussy-supa. This disgusting creature defended London's behavior, blaming the young women for throwing themselves at him. Ask yourself, do you think anyone would throw herself at him? Now Vanasupa, better known as clitora-megali (for her thumb-sized clit that comes from too much testosterone in her), after years of screwing people over is getting her own butt plugged and so she is suing the school. How does this relate to teaching? These two skid marks control the department along with batch-shit crazy, kiss any ass in front of me Harding. London quotes on his little home page in the department "I love teaching! I cannot remember a time when I did not want to be a teacher. Teaching is exactly what I want to do in my life." Why does this asshole say this--he doesn't like teaching he likes defecating on his students as he dances around the class talking about obscure, useless information--all the while being a condescending prick. All I can say is he is a poor teacher and abuses his position. Why do you teach? Because you have tenure and they can't get rid of you and you would never survive in the real world. Lastly Blair-- being an asshole is easy, we know you get off on it, but the reality is your pathetic. Being a decent person takes work and Blair isn't capable of work. Also, if your a girl suck up to him (not literally that is way too gross and you might catch something from the creepy, oily fuck), he will give you a good grade--just be his pet and you will prosper. I just finished my third quarter in a row with London. There are things that I absolutely love about him and would not have any other way. With that being said, there are things that I can not stand about him. I'll start with the good things and then randomly rant. I don't think I've had a more knowledgable professor since being in college. There has never been a time where I have asked him a question and he hesitated before giving me an answer. The guy is a genius. He also does a pretty good job of conveying information. All of his classes (at least in the junior series) are constructed with daily lectures taught through interactive in class activities. These are helpful because you get yourself thinking about background information and then as a class you work through new material through a combination of London doing problems and solving other problems as a class. The material you need to know is all laid out in the activities and homework so you know exactly what to expect for tests. So you study your heart out redoing all of the homework (which is super long by the way) and do the same thing with activities and you think you're prepared for the test and then bam, every problem that you've studied is on the test but with a confusing twist. His tests are really hard. Relatively fair, but just really hard. London is very particular about what he wants. If you use the word very or create on a lab report, he stops reading it from that point on and either gives you a D, F, or zero depending on how he's feeling. He warns you in advance several times about this so it's a mistake you only make once if at all. I truly believe I am a better engineer for having taken London's classes. With that being said, I, and a majority of the people I studied with averaged D's or C-'s at best in all of his classes. Having London as a professor will make you a better engineer. You will be better off because of it. With that being said, don't take any other hard classes at the same time as London. Each quarter I had him, I put twice as much work into his class alone as I did in al of my other classes combined and barely managed to pass them. If I could combine how well London teaches with someone who grades easier, it would be my ideal college professor. Also, I forgot to mention, if you ask him for help in office hours, he is very helpful. However, it's all on you to do that. I regret not taking advantage of his office hours more. Honestly, now that I think of it, the only bad thing I have to say about his class is that it's so goddamn hard.

Dr. London has no respect for students and what we do with our time here at Cal Poly. All he cares about are minute details that can be looked up in seconds if needed to be recalled. It was fine that he expected that, but then he started giving pop-quizes that asked for the market price of titanium, the the density of steel, and heat capacities of materials. While it may be important to know what dictates some of those properties and how they work, I find it worthless that this man forces such stupid facts down our throats. Also, he assumes his class is the only class you have during the quarter. While his class was my most challenging class, it was not deserving all of my time. And to make things worse, he did not allow us to bring coffee into the classroom (this was not a lab either) for our 8 am class. Then, when people drift off, he would berate us and threaten us that he would tell our future employers that we slept in class. Meanwhile, he would doze in and out when the other professor he taught with was giving a lecture. If your a MATE major you can't get around him, but if you are taking a support class and his name pops up as the teacher, avoid that class like the plague.

And when you do not do well, he berates you and claims you will fail in industry because you can't recall the T3 heat treatment or what the heat capacity of steel is. Oh, and the stupid thing is, the points for these quizzes go into our homework grade, which has around 100 points in it, and at the end of the quarter only amounts to 5% of our grade. So maybe he should realize that we do not care about 0.25% of our grade. In short... total tool.

Terrible teaching style. One example is that he assumes we should know how to do everything he is teaching already. When questioned about how he arrived at a certain answer, he says he not going to go into showing how to do this basic stuff. Several days later an email is sent out from him saying his answer to the problem was incorrect. If the teacher cannot do this "basic" material, how in the hell are we suppose to be learning from him. Maybe if he didn't treat everyone like shit and listened then people might have more respect for him. It's obvious he thinks he's better than everyone just because he went to stanford. However, if you found yourself not doing the assigned homework (like myself from time to time), chances are you would fail his quizes miserably. This isn't such a terrible thing however since quizes were worth 10% of your final grade. He grades on a curve and he likes the class average to be around 51%, he says that "this mirrors and aspect of the 'real world', and reflects the difficulty of the subject matter". The two midterms are worth 20% each and the final is worth 40% of your grade, which is a lot, so you need to study hard. His tests are challenging and (in all probability) you will not be able to finish them in 50 minutes, so just be prepared for that. Dr. London is a very demanding teacher, a real black or white type of a thinker. If you follow his rules, do exactly as he says and work hard you should do well. I don't remember him pulling any favorites in class, however at times it might seem like it since he is so harsh to people if they don't do as he says and so nice to people if they study hard and follow his instructions. Oh, that reminds me, the quarter I took this class from him, he "reserved" 10% of your grade to give to you at the end of the quarter for "being the studious and consciencous student that you are", this also can make it seem like he might be pulling favorites. But, basically that reserve 10% is something that he uses to make sure that you follow the items outlined in the course contract. This items include things like, showing up to class, not sleeping in class, doing the assigned reading and problems before class and having meaningfull and relevent questions for lecture. In general, I would say that if you are not a MatE then try to avoid taking any classes with him, he expects a level of understanding of material science and engineering that is most likely excessive for non MatE majors. If you are a MatE then there isn't much you can do to avoid classes with him. So, you might as well grin and bear it, besides there is a good chance that you will learn a tremendous amound about the topic matter being covered.

Dr. London is a VERY difficult teacher. I think London's problem is that he thinks what he teaches are the most important and exciting things, so he really want you to like it. But if you don't, then he's personally insulted and he'll somehow get you for it. The subjects he teaches are not necessarily very difficult, but he has the skills to make the class needlessly hard. In MATE 360, the class revolves around in class examples and problems. We spend almost all of our class time going over problems that seems like they were coming from chem 125, though longer than what you had seen in your chem classes. I could have done some of those problems when I was in AP chemistry back in high school. But Dr. London's exams are designed to be VERY long so you have to rush through to not even finish. After our exams, EVERYONE I talked to said they would have done much better if they had 10-15 more minutes. (He did give you more time to finish the final if you want, but not on the exams though.) Additionally, he is quite anal about attendance and tardiness. In MATE 350 355, he had a 10% of your grade "reserved," which basically translates to "do I like you or not." (I am serious, "reserved" was actually on the syllabus.) Most of the topics in that class should be quite new to you and they were quite difficult too. As to his personality, this is how one of my friends described London, "he has this vindictiveness in him, as if someone did something really horrible to him as a child that he is getting back at his students." That's how I feel during the two quarters that I took him. Well, if you are a MATE, you don't really have a choice, so just bite your teeth and go through it. But if you are not a MATE, don't waste your time with him.

Okay, so he's not my favorite professor ever, but people give him a hard time. He's a little tough on grading, misspell a word, get a 0 on that problem; don't use a straightedge when you are boxing an answer, lose points on that problem... That said, he is a good teacher, he knows his stuff and is willing to answer questions.

London is definitely a very demanding teacher. He grades hard and expects a lot, but he is also one of the best I've had at Cal Poly. If you keep up with readings, read your notes daily, and go to office hours the class is managable. I learned more in his class than I have in any previous.

He became a professor because he has an insatiable thirst for power, and academia is the only place he can get it. He is also obsessive about minor details. "1 minute late is the same as 1 hour late". No manager cares if a salaried engineer is 1 minute late. If he does, quit. Some students think he is a good teacher. Nobody thinks he is a good person. Avoid if at all possible.

Professor London is a great teacher. You will learn a ton and be expected to know a ton but it is worth it. Out of all the MatE professors, I have learned the most from him.

He sets very clear expectations and goals for the class, while providing all the information and resources to meet these expectations. Yes, his tests and homework can be hard but if you study, work hard and pay attention in class it is easy to do well. He is very approachable and will always give help if you ask for it.

He does not grade fairly. Expect to get a much lower grade than you deserve based on your knowledge of the subject. The only way to get a decent grade in the class is to his office regularly and suck his dick for "correct answers". Basically he wants every answer to be exactly the way he would state it. If you answer it in another way, but it means the same thing, it is wrong. I could have gone to office hours more, but I would much rather get a bad grade than have to talk to the annoying prick any more than necessary.

I took Blair many years ago, before he was given tenure. My first inclination is to apologize to all Cal Poly MATE students for not trying harder to have him denied tenure. I am sad to see that some things/people never change. Blair once told me I had "no future in engineering" and that I should drop out of engineering completely. The good news is that I didn't listen to him. In fact, I became an engineering professor myself. With so many bad professors like him, I saw an opportunity to become an opposite of him. If you are a MATE student; don't dispair and don't change your major just because of Blair or anyone elses opinion. Sometimes good things are born out of bad ones.

Dear London, You are a bad person. I don't know why you choose to be the biggest ass you could possibly be, but you have. If you're fine with that then that's good. I'm just left wondering if the bad people in the world KNOW they are bad people, or if they just think that they are the good guys, when in reality they are shit holes. You told me recently that I am "unteachable". Maybe you meant in general. I hope not otherwise life is going to be quite difficult for me. I think that the comment is really a reflection on you. You are unable to teach. Thus, from your viewpoint, everyone is "unteachable". I wonder why a man would become a teacher when it appears you hate the very students you teach. Then I realized that you don't hate us. You delight in the power you hold over us. Each question you refuse to ask gives you a buzz. You know knowledge is power don't you. You really believe it to be true. When you know something and we don't you have a mental orgasm. I see the happiness radiate from you when we do not know the answer to something. You are a bad person. I don't know how you're still here. I don't understand why the MatE department keeps you around. I don't understand why the hell you're combining ballet and engineering. I wish I could say I don't care. You see, your existence puzzles me. Is there a purpose for you in my life right now? Are you here as some kind of sick karma? Have I wronged someone in my pass? If I have I'm truly sorry. The fabrications you tell us in class are obvious. No one will care if we can spell words correctly. Everyone is a mispeller of words. We will be accepted. We will use spellcheck! Some of us even know how to go into word and auto correct commonly misspelled words. You live a life of power and lies. How else to keep your power? The average grades for your tests are just pathetic. This is a reflection on your ability to teach. No.. that can't be it. The material you teach is easy. This is a reflection of you. You stay in power by handing out horrible grades. That way we fear you. For what purpose, I assume, to feed your dark soul. You are a bad person. I just thought I'd jot down some of the thoughts I've been having recently. I apologize if they seem too harsh, but then you are a harsh person. I assume that you read these comments and enjoy them. You are too smart to ignore perceived deficiencies in your demeanor. If you cared you would have corrected them long ago. Thus I can only assume that before you go to bed each night, you will your poly rating to go lower. You will the comments to get more mean. Good night London.

I've taken many classes with Blair and he's my senior project adviser so I would say I know him well. IDK what he was like years ago, but today, he's a hell of a professor. He can communicate info, he really cares about making students better engineers, and he has an incredible focus on industry. If you are a MATE, take him. You need to have this information. He is the only prof in the department that will really drill into you important MATE fundamentals. Sucks to see his rating so low, he isn't easy, but you need to put in some work to become a good engineer.

Just putting this under 482, but I've had him for quite a few classes here, and let me say, he is far and away the best teacher that the materials department has. Yes, he is precise, yes, he grades harshly, yes, he can be kind of a dick, but he is a good teacher that will actually teach you things you might need to know further on as an engineer. Take him, be prepared to put in a bit of effort, and you'll be a better engineer because of it.

Think critically before you take this "teacher". HE CHEATS ON HIS WIFE WITH STUDENTS (he was kicked out of Poly for doing this), has two kids, and has the nerve to brag about how much he loves his family. If he can't make the right choices in life, how can you ensure he will make the right choice to evaluate you as a student? He actually lost his right at Cal Poly to pass out his own "teacher evaluations." Furthermore, University Police staff is required to hand out these evaluations in class. If you want, you can ask University Police for his file. If you can, submit a request to remove Dr. London from any courses that he teaches. As you can tell, Dr. London is a creepy man that loves to flex his power on students. If he doesn't like you, you're done. He won't even give you a chance. If he doesn't like you and you're an attractive woman, he might try to have sex with you in exchange for a good grade. Either way, he seems to be a man that enjoys flexing his power by playing "grading" games with students. He is the master of disguise, and I guarantee you won't be able to tell what kind of man he is when you first meet him. You can never judge a book by its first chapter. I think part of his problem was his dad. Maybe he could share with you more on this subject. Regarding grading policies, Dr. London is not flexible to read answers that aren't his own fabricated answers. To him, there is only one solution, his solution. Dr. London doesn
