Professor Lancaster is a great teacher. She was more than willing to help out her students in any way possible and was very clear in her teaching style. Bus 214 is one of the harder required business courses, but if you keep up with the reading and make a valid attempt to learn, it's pretty interesting. I definitely recommend taking Lancaster though, although her tests are heavy weighted towards tough MC questions. If you do take this class, you are bound to learn a lot of really useful information.

Dr. Lancaster has set up a new style of teaching, where instead of lecturing she utilizes group work instead. The idea behind it is good but it still needs a lot of work. She is not sensitive to student needs and I feel her style of teaching (group work) is an excuse for her not to lecture. As well her grading system is not standard. I would advise to take another teacher for this course if at all possible.

Lancaster is one of my favorite teachers. It takes work to get an A, but do the reading and you'll find the lectures and teaching style rewarding. The group work is a great way to help with learning principles, some of which can be very detailed and confusing. If I had to take any accounting again, I'd take Lancaster.

Lancaster is a pretty good instructor of this course. There is a lot of work--especially group work. You are expected to be in class everyday and have to actively participate with your classmates. There is are some projects that you have to meet with your group outside of the class. Be prepared to stay in class the entire 2 hours everyday. However, the material isn't too difficult because the quizzes force you to stay up on the material. Half of the tests are in your group which is a positive. If you enjoy working in groups and like to keep up with your work, then I recommend Lancaster.

Lancaster knows her material, but her methods are unorthodox and often insensitive to the students. She has assigned material late and then expected the students to make up for her errors and she doesn't clearly state her expectations regarding assignments ahead of time, following through with harsh grading for unclear assignments. Take someone else if at all possible.

I liked Kathy although she does force you to learn on your own and you really dont actually learn from her in lecture. She expects you to learn outside of class and through in class group work. I'm a slacker and I still made it through the class with a cr or C+. This was mainly due to the fact that the material builds on itself and you cant help but understand the material with even a little studying and a few late night crams. The fist test is easy compared to the second so I sujest you do well on this one, the second is much harder and you will be pressed for time if your not a quick thinking genious. The final I thought was the easiest of the three test because it covers material that you've already learned and the easier last few chapters. Getting in a good group is important but not under your control, I got lucky. One more thing, I dont know what it was, luck, accounting, business, or the time of the day but damn there were some hot women in this class, at least 75% of them were fine. And you really get to know your group members!

Although I believe Dr. Lancaster is a decent teacher, I would recomend taking someone else. The class is entirely group work, so be ready to deal with that. The tests are challenging and long. She is a nice lady, and wants you to succeed, but this class is a lot of work, as there are daily quizes(not as easy as it sounds)group projects, and a big group presentation on the chapters. It is one of those classes that you shouldn't take with a whole lot of other time-consuming classes, because I know that this class took up the majority of my time.

You work in groups, and hope you get a good group, because if you do you get a good grade. You take tests as groups, the teacher DOESN"T LECTURE, and the text sucks so it's really hard. It's easy to cheat on everything.. basically she sets up the class so it's imposible to fale (even letting you choos your own grading scale) then does her best to fail you. But there is hope. I didn't do anything in the class and deserved a D or F, but since I had a good group got a B.

If you are a book-learner, go ahead and take this class with Lancaster. I originally thought that students attended classes so they could learn something from lecture. Man was I wrong.... This teacher assigns homework before she even talks about it, and does little to answer our questions and explain the processes involved in the class. It seems like I wasted my tuition with this class when I could have stayed home and read my Managerial Accounting book and got a better education! Bottom line, Lancaster DOES NOT TEACH. She makes students perform all the test reviews by presentations, basically making us students attempt to teach each other. It only works so well when half the class has some sort of idea of what's going on in the class. I did not fail the class, only because I was in a productive group who struggled with me to tackle her in-class problems. Don't take Lancaster unless you want to learn Managerial Accounting 99% from your book, 1% from the teacher.

For all of you accounting-haters out there...I would probably have to advise you to take Lancaster. Daily quizzes are not tough...especially if you have old ones from past students...they are different but basically the same. She does not lecture, which is welcome break...and after taking her for a couple weeks you be thanking the lord that does not lecture because she just doesn't teach all that well. Group work saves everyones ass, including mine. The individual tests are hard. No other way to describe it. I failed one, got a D on another, and did very marginally on the final, and I got a flat C...so go figure. The excel assignments aren't too bad and they actually help you learn the material. What a relief to be done with accounting...Lancaster made it a bit easier than I thought.

She is really fair, and quite a sweet person if you initiate a dialogue with her. Make sure you study hard because he tests aren't a gimme. But if you really try you can get an A. She gives you a study list to prepare for the test. She also gives you lots of chances for extra credit. Take advantage of them! they bumped my grade up from a b+ to an A-.

Dr. Lancaster is an awesome lady. She lets you run the class and understands if the assignments are too much, but takes into account what you need to learn. She does not lecture all that much, which I like. It is more learn by doing, which doesn't waste your time. She lets you see past exams and has many resources available for you to study off of. The class was enjoyable for accounting and we also get the chance to talk about other isses involving business. I would definatley reccomend her for any class.

Lancaster has unique teaching style, you get to decide how the class is graded and you work in teams throughtout the quarter, sounds good huh! Well the problem is she really does not teach that much in class, not really any lecture atleast. Kathy is a really nice and very smart lady, but you pretty much half to self teach yourself. Class is fun, but alot of time is wasted. A typical day would consiste of talking about any current events'/news that both she and students bring up for the first 45 mins, she encourages this. Then spend 15-20 mins or so going over any HW questions. We take a break for 10. Come back and she will make sure there are no more homework problems. Then she'll spend about 10-15 mins sumaraizing the chapter, and the remainder of class she'll assign an exercise or 2 which each team works on. If there is any time left we'll go over the exercise. She makes it really hard to take notes and quickly goes over difficult and important topics. She is very nice and compassionate to students problems just go to her office, she prob won't remember your name, so get used to it. When exam time comes she tells you where to get a sample exam, STUDY IT GOOD!!

This is a hard class. I studied so hard for the tests and got D's and F's, fortuntely the homework and other parts of the class are counted heavier. There is a lot of group work, so if you don't like group work wouldn't recommend the class. She tries really hard for everyone to enjoy the class but it just wasn't a good class. I felt really good about her class although I got a B. I thought I might do better but I really struggled for that B. Be prepared to devote a lot of time into this class. It's a tough class in a lot of ways, but for some reason, I never resented doing the work for it. She really makes you earn your grade. You have plenty of chances to get yourself extra credit points and if you really suck at one of the assignments, she lets you do them over for half credit. Her class is very unconventional, but definitely intellectually stimulating. She really cares about her students and it shows. If you just ask she will give you as much help as you need. I hate accounting, but I enjoyed this class.

She seems like a nice lady, but she has no idea how to teach. If you don't mind teaching yourself the material, then go ahead and take the class. Personally I like it when I teacher actually does something to help. In class you sit there and watch her put the main points of each chapter on the board (the bold sections throughout the chapter) then she assigns a problem for you and your teamates. Thats it! She doesn't teach shit. Her final is worth more then both the midterms put together, so pretty much your fucked if you do bad. Take any other professor for 215, trust me.

Lancaster is a very well-meaning person. She is smart and has real world experience. The problem with her course is that she trouble relating all she knows with her students. Sticking everyone in permanent groups makes things a little akward and uncomfortable at times. Her approach is commendable, nonetheless, since she is attempting to bring reality into the classroom. I recommend talking to her as much as you can in her office hours because the material is not always clear and hard to grasp in her lectures and from the book alone at times. She should lossen up a bit and make the materiale easier to relate to. I recommend her, but I also recommend you ask as many questions as you and get her talking more about the material. I regret not talking to more and getting to know this potentially great instructor.

Not a very interesting teacher. Not a very interesting textbook. She does offer up to 30 pts EC (5 on each exam) and 15 "loots" and her midterms are cake. The cumulative final is a lot harder though, eventhough you get a 1 page cheatsheet. With all the EC pts. available and the easy midterms, you're a moron if you get a C or lower. Lancaster does a good job teaching this class. While the material in the class isn't very hard at all compared with Bus 214 she does a good job of presenting it clearly. Also you get assigned a group at the start of class and that is your group the whole quarter. I got a good group so I liked it but a lot of people hated that plan cause they got shafted with lazy group memebers. There is homework almost every class and a number of excel assignments but all of them are really easy. Shes also gives plenty of opportunities for extra credit. I recomend Lancaster for this class but cross your fingers that you get a good group.

Lancaster is a great teacher. She did a really good job with the lectures, her homework wasn't unfair, and the tests were valid and not bad at all. If you study and pay attention, you will do well. I would have had an A if I had actually done homework, that is my own fault. There were times when you didn't really understand why the class was sitting around reading about cliff bars, but it actually gives you a better view of business and responsibility. Prof. Lancaster is a great. She assigns you to groups and does little lecturing. She mostly assigns the groups examples and problems to work out during class while she goes around and individually helps the groups. I found her method of teaching very helpful because I personally learn better by constantly doing problems and having more examples to study from. She gives study midterms and the actual midterms are very similar so do the practice midterm, correct it, study the problems you got wrong and you'll do fine. She mostly tests on the technical stuff like computing this or that rather than definitions, etc. She does collect homework but grades more on effort than right answers so do your hw and you basically get free points. I did have a problem on the second midterm where I forgot to bubble in two answers but circled the right answer on the booklet and tried to argue for the points but she wouldn't give it to me at the time. But after finals I calculated that I would have gotten an A in the class instead of a B+ so I e-mailed her explaining my situation and how I would have gotten an A if she had given me the points and I ended up getting an A in the class. She's very fair and I would recommend taking her, she also gives tons of extra credit opportunities.

Dr. Lancaster is a decent teacher. She gives you practice exams that are fairly similar to the test, and will tell you which topics will be covered and which will not. Although she is horrible at trying to give you help when you need it because she will never tell you what it is that you are doing wrong. She wants you to figure it out on your own. There is homework daily, and the workload for this class is pretty intense. Do not even attempt to take this teacher if you are taking 16 units. You pretty much go through a chapter a day, which is completely absurd because before you have time to understand something you're onto the next chapter, and you have multiple side projects to do ontop of your daily homework. Also, she will really get on your nerves! She comes off as a super nice teacher at the start, and she is for the most part, but there are just things about her that make you want to shoot yourself. For example, she sticks her tongue out and bites it everytime she laugh's at her own jokes, which is pretty often. Oh and something that made me want to drop this class was her extreme liberal-ness. She is a super hippy and will make you learn all about "sustainable businesses" whether you like it or not. She imposes her hippy values on you and pretty much forces you to agree with them. But she does bring in her dog every class which will make cute noises and keep you entertained.

Lancaster is an okay teacher, but one thing I hated during her course is that she teachers you the material AFTER you do the homework. How is that helpful? You end up having no clue how to do the homework and just have to try your best. It is really frustrating because homework is supposed to REINFORCE what you have learned. When you do the work before she actually teachers the lesson then the way you do it on the homework sticks with you and usually its wrong. I would recommend trying to get a different teacher.

Lancaster is a great teacher! She is very down to earth and is willing to answer any question. She is definitely one of my favorite professors at Cal Poly. Her class is structured in a manner that I found very helpful. Everyday homework is due (and graded on effort and not correct answers, which is nice). For the first hour we go over the homework and she answers people's questions. Then proceeds to lecture about the main points of the chapter. During the second hour, a practice problem is usually assigned and your group which is determined earlier in the class will go over it. This is a great opportunity to practice what she just lectured about. Her midterms are straight forward. She tells you EXACTLY what you need to know. STUDY HER PRACTICE MIDTERMS! Those type of questions will be on the midterms. Overall, I loved this professor and would highly recommend her to everyone.

I loved my financial accounting class and it made me consider concentrating in accounting, but I really did not like managerial accounting. My feelings of the material aside, Lancaster taught us the material after we did the homework so it was harder to complete, and didn't give you full credit if you added to your answer if we went over the homework in class before turning it in. Some of the concepts were hard to grasp and she would ask really random questions on the midterms. And she's really passionate about sustainability, but this class was not a sustainability class and I think we covered that subject too much.

Lancaster does cover a lot of material in this class, but everything is straight forward and not difficult by any means. If your willing to spend the time necessary to make sure you actually understand the concepts instead of just limping your way through the chapters then you should be able to do very well on the tests. Don't expect her to teach you every concept in the class. The book is excellent and easy to learn from. What Lancaster does do is go over and practice every key concept. Lancaster was horrible. She goes over homework after you go over the chapter so you have to basically learn everything on your own. She wastes lecture time going over sustainability and ethics that could have been used to catch up when we were behind. She also has you read this clif bar book and present for a few minutes in class which has nothing to do with accounting. She would be an okay sustainability teacher, but as accounting goes, she is less than helpful. Also, is really bad at returning assignments in a timely manner. When you turn something in, give it a week or two to get back to you and don\'t plan on using it to study from. I was considering concentrating in accounting until I took this class. The material honestly isn\'t that bad, it just takes a lot of work guiding yourself through it.

Lancaster\'s class was fairly straightforward and easy to follow. She\'s very accurate with her syllabus and allows you to look ahead and see what\'s coming up for the rest of the quarter so you\'re never surprised. There are weekly online quizzes and homework assignments of which are fairly simple if you complete the reading. Those that complain about being unable to complete the homework assignment because it was assigned before the lecture were just lazy and didn\'t want to read the chapter. The level of reading and the amount of work demanded from the book (which sums up the level of content for her class) is pretty much high school level. If you simply read the material (and there are even sample problems in the book...) you can easily complete her homework assignments. Just like most people have pointed out, if you study from the practice midterms and, god forbid, make an effort to read the chapters that pertain to the midterm, its really easy to get an A in the class.

Lancaster is a great, but difficult, teacher for managerial accounting. There is a lot of work required in the course to do well, such as homework, weekly online quizzes, and long excel assignments. For the tests, she gives you study guides AND a practice test, and if you do both and understand what you\'re doing, you\'ll do well. I found Lancaster to be a very helpful, and polite professor. She promotes discussion, doesn't lecture the entire time, has good assignments to do in class, and also brought in her dog that she was training. She has quizzes before class on the reading material, which she then explains in class. She then lets us work in groups on practice problems, and also provides sample tests and more practice problems on Blackboard. She would always make your group learn the material together and if you end up in a bad group then its almost pointless to go to class. Grading Structure(as of Winter 2012): The class is out of 400 total possible point. 160 for two midterms. 100 for a final. 100 for weekly online homework and quizzes. 40 for team performance. There is an extra 20 extra credit points worked into the homework and quizzes. So if you get at least 85% on the quizzes and homework you guarantee an extra 20 points added to the final grade. Lectures and workload: Two lectures a week. About 1 to 2 chapters a week. The quizzes are online at McGrawHill Connect and are due BEFORE she lectures. A lot of students don't like that because they need the lecture to do the homework. Personally I was able to get 100% on every homework just from reading and studying the chapter (took about 45 mins to an hour a chapter to fully master it) before she taught us it. Homeworks are pretty much in the same manner, we were asked to do exercise we barley went over in class. Again, if you read the chapter it shouldn't be that difficult. Also you can go to her office hours if you don't know how to do the homework and quizzes. Her lectures depend on you reading and understanding the chapter before you come to class. This is where lazy people usually say Lancaster sucks and doesn't know how to teach. Midterms: Her midterms were moderately difficult mainly because they aren't really straight forward like you would expect from such material. The book exercises are pretty simple compared to what she tests you on. There are only about 25ish questions per midterm so that's about 3 points per question which really adds up. To prepare for the midterms just do as many of the book problems as you can. For problems with formulas, she wont always just give you the numbers to plug in, she will make you get the numbers first, which is where you just need to think how to do so. Final note: She is helpful and knows her accounting pretty well. She is a CPA and has been teaching for a while. DON'T expect rainbows to shoot out of her mouth, you need to do most of the work to understand the material, she IS there to support though. As always, you put in the effort, shouldn't be hard to get an A.

DO NOT TAKE LANCASTER! I am a reasonable, rational person telling you to not take her if you want to actually learn and receive a fair, well earned grade. Here is my top ten list of reasons: #1. She is fuckin lazy....it is taking her two weeks to grade our midterms, which were half scantron. #2. She does not recognize student difficulties easily....probably the reason why most of the class failed the midterm. #3. HORRIBLE COMMUNICATOR! she does not respond to emails promptly, if at all. Plus She does not specify what exactly she wants from us on a given assignment until right before its due. #4. She is a boring teacher. #5. She blames the collective failures of the class primarily on the students....but you gotta question whether she can teach or not when most of the class does not understand the material and fails the midterm. #6. She can't take the fact that SHE is the one who is failing us....in class the other day, she got frustrated and walked out. What the fuck is up with that?! #7. She doesnt have much real world experience, if any at all, to bring into the classroom. It would be nice to have that in a 400 level class. #8. She seems kinda unorganized and a little unprepared for class. #9. She isn't realistic....she expects us to do 90% of the learning outside of class. So, basically if you spend four hours per week in class, that is only 10% of the time she wants you to put in. #10. She is just way too out there for an accounting teacher....she looks at this as an art....accounting is definitely not an art....its a science...thats why u get a BS in accounting and not a BA....she should go teach liberal arts. She is still stuck in the 60s or something and should go back to being a damn lift operator at that ski area she was employed at before.

Dr Lancaster is a nice and caring person. However, we all know that just because someone is a good person doesn't mean that can run an effective course. To be fair, this class really is a wishy washy class that doesnt really teach you much of anything and is full of busy work. It's going to be that way no matter who you take it with, it's just the nature of the material and the required SUA packet. However, I felt that Dr Lancaster didnt clearly present the material and had ineffective class exercises to help. Also, we spent hours of class over the quarter grading SUA packets in class which really didn't teach us much at all. I studied a lot for the midterm and bombed it big time (like everyoe else), which was really disappointing. And instead of going back and changing the style of teaching or trying to do something different for the rest of the quarter because the class on average was failing, we continued as such. Then, for the final, we were tested on material we hadn't even touched in 3-4 weeks. I was really disappointed in the what I got out of the class. I think if we had more case studies and had actual discussion lectures rather than had 100 power point slides read off, maybe we could have all gotten a little bit more out of the class. I would recommend taking someone else who has it a bit more together.

I am appalled at the whining and rudeness of my fellow CalPoly classmates. Don't they realize that we are all getting what is essentially a free (or 90% free) education at taxpayer expense? We are all fortunate to attend such a wonderful school and everyone should be more positive about the professors we have at CalPoly. I fear for American business when I read the mean-spirited admonitions of future business men and women. We all receive a huge government handout and should be more appreciative, especially when few students come from low-income households. CalPoly students are bratty bitches, imo, and Lancaster rocks.

So Lancaster isn't everyones favorite teacher but she isn't that bad. In fact she really knows her stuff and does a good job recognizing what people were having trouble with. This was a new class for her to teach and we encountered a great deal of problems that weren't entirely her fault. She compensated by giving us a genorous curve on our midterm, making the final a great deal easier, and cutting out a lot of material. However, this class is still a great deal of work regardless of who you take. I talked to people who had Savage and they said the workload wasn't much different. Be prepared to spend well over 6 hours a week doing homework and projects. This is a accounting class so we do a lot of time consuming homework. Nothing on the projects was that bad but one of the textbooks we had sucks. It was very poorly written and I got pissed off everytime I read it. This class is difucult no matter who you take but don't but Lancaster does a good job teaching it and as long as you put in the time you can easily pass the class.

Since Bus 429 is not going away, Cal Poly needs to come up with a better solution to the organization of the class. Currently, it is an overbearing amount of busy work. The underlying concepts are great, and it looks very good on paper and to recruiters. Yes, we do need to review the accounting cycle. Yes, we do need to learn a little flowcharting and documenting internal controls. But if we want to learn to do it, we need to practice it in class in a different way than we did this quarter. It is not Dr. Lancaster's fault, she got stuck with a ridiculous class to teach, and she took a lot of heat for it from students, and was a good sport about it. BUS 429 needs to be looked at and revised by the faculty. It is simply too much work for a class that is not considered a "core" accounting class. Faculty must sit down and CLARIFY OBJECTIVES that they want students to get out of this course and cut the work load to something that is managable and fair. There was so much work this quarter, that I found myself just trying to get an answer down because I did not have the time to struggle with it and learn. There was 13 hours of homework assigned during dead week. That is not fair. Please FACULTY, someone re-organize this class.
