Kohlen has the worst case of "Short Man's Complex" I've ever encountered. He tries to make up for the years of ridicule he's endured from taller people by grading ridiculously hard on projects. He has very little respect for the amount of work a student puts into something and is more than happy to give an extremely low grade on what any other teacher would consider an excellent project or journal. The field trips are tough to endure because of his unbelievably borring narratives and he is completely unclear about what he expects out of your journal. Apparently, my 25-page journal which answered all of his questions with diagrams and extensive notes was only worth a C... and many others who put in a tremendous amount of effort received similar if not lower grades. AVOID KOHLEN AT ALL COSTS. Try anyone else. He seems like a nice guy at first, but you will regret it in the end.

Kohlen is extremely knowledgeable about the material and methods for the ARCH 106 lab. The field trips, I agree, got pretty boring, but the guy really knows what he's talking about. He is pretty hazy on what he expects from the journal, and gave me a B-, claiming my many pages of extensive notes and drawings weren't enough. I was satisfied with how he graded my project though. If you get Kohlen for ARCH 106 lab, just remember to write A LOT in your journal, and do a decent job on your project. Then you'll do fine.

Ken brings the realities of working in an architectural office to his classes. He's very easy to get along with but is a tough grader. He'll catch ALMOST every discrepancy on a set of drawings. He didn't seem to mind when I noted "THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE NO LESS THAN ONE SIX PACK OF BEER ON ICE AND AT THE SITE AT ANY ONE TIME DURING CONSTRUCTION." :)

Be prepared to put in about 300+ hours worth of work on your final project... and even that won't get you an A. This guy is tough!!!, totally uncompassionate, and a hard nose. Without a doubt, the worst teacher I have ever had.

i would rather have colon cancer than ken kohlen for a class again. i thought the class was unreasonably difficult as it was, until i talked to people with other teachers in the same class. not only did we have at least twice as many drawings to do in the same period of time, but he graded these drawings much more harshly. i got a c by the skin of my teeth even when i completed all of the drawings on time and with good quality. this lab took an unbelievable amount of time and effort that was not proportional to its worth. if you want to draw enough blueprints to construct an entire city block, take this guy.
