Kato-sensei is hilarious and passionate. MATH 112 is insultingly easy but Kato-sensei makes the best of it. If you're shit at math then I highly advise you take this class, if you cannot do well in it then I don't think you can succeed in college and it's probably in your best interest to stop. Kato-sensei really cares about his students and wants to see all of them succeed, if you are having trouble just consult him and you will get through it.

My first impressions of Prof. Kato scared me. He had an accent (he can be understood very easily however) and a pony tail. However, very quickly I found he was a good teacher. He was very personable and really seemed to care about each student. By the end of the quarter he knew many of the student's names (50+ people). He also made the class very enjoyable. He would stop in the middle of problems and tell stories about his life, and sometimes his homemade jokes. His tests were pretty standard as far as math tests. He gave homework, but it wasn't excessive, just the right amount to learn the material. He devoted alot of the class time to answering questions, which he answered pretty well. I would recommend him. I don't know how he teaches in his Calculus classes, but for Math 118 I felt he did a good job.

Professor Kato has a heavy Japanese accent as is hard to understand, don't take this class if you have trouble with accents, it takes twice as long to understand what he is explaining, and by the time that you finally get it he has already moved on to the next topic. He lectures very fast, and covers too much material for one class session, I had the two hour lecture and the amount of information presented was incredible. His tests are hard, but are graded fairly. He has trouble understanding students' questions, but attempts to answer them. Try and avoid his class, but if you get stuck taking it, its not the end of the world.

This guy is one of the best math teachers you'll ever have. He really pours his heart into the class to make a normally boring subject interesting--he'll tell stories of what's going on in his life and draw graphs of his relationship with his wife :D Everything that he does revolves around students; he learns everybody's name in the class, takes a class photo, wants to work with students after class to make sure that they pass, etc. True, his english is broken, but if you are interested in taking a great math class, take it with Kato. Oh, and he is damn funny.

Kato has a difficult time understanding studetns questions. Busy office hours, but willing to help. He moves through material quickly. He was unwilling to explain certain concepts though. He doesn't teach how to approach math problems, and wouldn't explain how to when I asked. Funny in lecture though.

Kato is the best! This guy remmembered all of our names out of a class of 54. He teaches the material until you have no doubts on it, that is if you go to the lectures. He has his own personal sense of humor (just ask him about jello and icecream or about not calling him sweet heart). I had him 6pm-8pm and never fell asleep in his class. How could you his lectures are fun. IF YOU CAN GET HIM, GET HIM!

If you have a problem understanding people with accents, then don't take Goro Kato. If you have any kind of hangup with math, don't take him. However, if you have a decent understanding of math and want a really caring, fun istructor, take Kato. His biggest concern was getting everyone a good grade. I had a two hour class, but he made it fun by breaking off in mid-sentence of a lecture to tell the class about his first experience of this or that in America or his research or his friend in Europe. He made office hours twice as many times a week and twice as long as normal. He encouraged people to ask him questions and would spend all lecture solving problems if that's what it took for us to gain understanding. He presented the material clear-cut, and expected you to know everyhing up to Calc SOLID. Still he is fun, but don't be fooled: the class is challenging. Homework is medium load and collected once a week. Grades are based on two 100-point midterms, a 100 point final, and an overall homework grade of 50 points.(5pts/assnmt/wk).

Don't let my grade in 141 fool you, Dr. Kato is an excelent instructor. I enjoyed his humor and he always encourages questions. The hardest part of the course for me was his exams...some of which were quite difficult. He is a fair grader and tries to help his students as much as possible.

If you want to get an easy A, do not take Dr. Kato. His tests are really hard. All of his questions are not based on the basic of calculus but another step into calculus. I took him in Spring of 2000 and many students flunked his class. Do not take him unless you really know basic calculus inside out. He talks about his wife during class which was entertaining but it's hard to understand him sometimes.

After reading all of the ratings on this guy I figured I would take him. I never had calculus in high school but i went to summer quarter here and understood basically what a math class was like in college. If you never had calc. in high school...good luck....i take that back...don't take this class. His qualities include: caring about our success, semi-helpful in office hours, moves way too fast in class, doesn't count homework enough, 3 impossible tests, and having many mistakes on the board. His teaching capability is great, yet he doesn't understand how to use it. He believes because he has been teaching for so long, that he is continuing to teach in a good manner. Well, on the first day of class we did not receive a syllabus, but he told us that we would have 3 test each worth 100 pts. Well, 2/3 got a D or below on the first test (no curve). Then, 2/3 of the class failed the next test. He,therefore said that we could drop one of the two tests and he would double the final. Obviously he did not realize that most 2/3 of the class was still failing (if you ask me, this is obviously his fault) Then the final comes around which I studied for to a great extent (20+ hrs. in the last week) and I found out I must have failed that caus that is what my grade showed. If you have had calc. in highschool and are a hard worker, I think you have about a 70% chance of PASSING but if you havn't had calc, you probably have a bout a 10-15% chance. Good Luck--hopefully there is another teacher that fits into your schedule. Remember...Good person who means well, but a BAD TEACHER.

Kato makes math class a fun class. He has a great sense of humor, and is always happy. An area he could improve on is in how he teaches class. He does pure example problems without any explanation of the theory behind it. If that's all you need, then Kato is your teacher.

Professor Kato is a great guy and really cares about the students. The only negative thing, his accent is really not a problem, is that he moves really fast. I would say unless you have a good grasp of Calculus and have taken it already it could be hard to keep up. He is more than willing to do any problems in class and in his office hours. The class was graded on two mid terms, which he ended up dropping the low one, homework, and the final. He is absoloutely halarious thgroughout class. Inever missed a day because class was so much fun. Keep good notes and don't get behind and you will be fine.

Warning:Do Not take kato if you need to touch up on algebra. The calculus that he tests you on is not very hard, but he kills everyone with the harder side of algebra. He collects homeworkevery week, and will do homework problems during class all of the time. This guy is very funny in class with his japanese accent. He memorizeed everyone's name in a class of 35. Your grade is three tests (best one doubled) and a little hmwk. He does say a lot of funny stuff in class. One last thing about kato - during class he does example problems all the time instead of partly explaining ideas. Very nice guy, take him only if you're 110% at algebra.

His classes are always entertaining and keep you interested. In fact he'll let you know if you can take a nap or if you should stay awake. He is sooooooo funny!he keeps you laughing through every class and throughout the entire quarter!Everything he teaches is extremely clear, if you dont understand just ask him in class or go to his office hours. If he sees that you are dedicated to learning he will definately help you out and give you more partial credit on tests. I got an A because i went to office hours, did all of the hw, even though you don't have to turn it in, and went to every class. He makes you want to come to class because he is such an awesome professer.I have nothing but the best to say about Kato and i DEFINATELY reccomend him. Dr. Kato (please, call him Goro), well, he is just a great teacher. He is very Japanese in that he takes a student's success or failure very personally. If you don't do well, he feels that he has failed to be the professor you need. And so he watches over his students - he knows your name and your strengths and weaknesses, he is excellent in his office hours and his lectures actually make calculus fun (gasp)! Often he'll stop in mid-sentence, say something like, "My, it certainly is hot today...I think a nice bowl of chocolate ice cream would be nice right now...", then relate his happiness as a function of the angle of a slice of cheesecake. (this is true - I'm not making this up) This is not to say, however, that he doesn't work you very hard. He assigns a lot of homework and his tests are harder than the department average, and so you MUST stay on top of the material to do well. The weird thing is, he actually seems to care whether you learn the material or not. Take this guy for any calculus class you can get him for, and use his office hours as much as you can.

Dr. Kato's greatest strength lies in his Japanese culture, namely that teachers in that country take their student's success and failure extremely personally. Goro (he prefers to be called by his first name) did not give up on me, even after I did horridly on two midterms and was on a straight path to academic probation. He actively pursued me, working with me on every weak point and difficulty. The result? I finished very strong on his final and managed to pass the class. Had it been a semester-length course, I would have done even better than my C. Bottom line, I knew the material, because the man refused to let me fail. Goro is, by his own admission, rather scatter-brianed (I remember one time how he described his happiness as a function of Theta, where Theta was the angle of a slice of "cheesey cake"), but generally speaking, it does not affect his lectures adversely. If anything, the humor helps the concepts stick in your brain. I never knew Calculus (or is it *the* Calculus?) could be so entertaining. It is true that he does give a heavy homework load, so be ready for it. That is the only complaint I really have about him. He will know the names of everyone in the class by week 5, so you will receive personal attention from him. I have long since graduated and left SLO, but as I prepare for a career as an actuary, I want you to know that this man got me on the path of mathematical maturity, and taught me to truly love the subject. Take him for as many classes as you can.

Dr. Kato rules! He's a hilarious Japanese man; he loves math. This really kept me interested in the material. Homework isn't due, but if you want to pass the class, you need to do it. I'd recommend taking a study group. There are two midterms and a cumulative final, each 100 points. No curve, but he takes your highest score and doubles it, so your final grade is out of 400. He also considers raising your grade more if you show that you know the material by doing well on the final. This class is very un-stressful. It lead me to zen. Seriously.

Dr. Kato is by far the greatest professor at CalPoly I have seen so far. I wasn't too sure what to think of this little Japanese guy with a mostly bald head and coke bottle glasses, but I very quickly grew to love him. On my first midterm, I earned a 33% and a 63% on the second, which just shows how difficult his 2 midterms and final can be. But Dr. Kato loves his students, and respects them more than any other professor or teacher I have ever had. He assigns homework, but doesn't collect it (though it would be wise to do it anyway.) and his midterms are pretty hard, just make sure that you study for them quite a bit. Dr. Kato wants his students to succeed in his class, and he will tell you, if the class did poorly on his exam, that he had trouble sleeping after grading them. He takes a lot of responsibility for how his students do in his class. I am recommending Dr. Kato to any person who needs to take any calculus class he teaches, and even if you do not need the class, I would suggest you take his class just to get to know this man.

I completely lucked out getting Kato! Yes, many would say his teaching style is... unorthodox, but it's his kooky personality and genuine care for his students that keeps students wanting to come and pay attention. Honestly, I don't see why Kato isn't at the top of the list... my roommate had Greenwald (a 3.80 at the time of this posting), and I had a much better experience. According to him at least, Greenwald and some of the other higher rated professors ask hard and obscure questions on tests. I found Kato to be rather forgiving and generous, in terms of difficulty and choices between questions. I would take him again in a heartbeat and encourage others to do the same!

Kato is one of the funniest teachers I've ever had. He is so random and hilarious. The problem is that he's not a great teacher. Most classes would be spent reviewing problems from the homework that were extremely difficult and took way too long to solve. He would never have enought time to teach us everything after doing such tedious homework problems. The grade was determines only by two midterms and a final, which I personally liked. He has the most awesome rule for grades as well: if you get an A on one of the midterms and the final, he will give you an A in the class no matter what the other midterm grade was. I got a C, A-, and A and got an A in the class. The tests were pretty simple, but I took high school calc BC which I'm sure is why I was able to do well in the class. So, he is an easy A as long as you already are somewhat familiar with the material. Did I mention he's hilarious?

Dr. Kato is the most personable professor I've had. His lectures are fun and they break up the usually boring and intense material. Homework load is fair and tests are usually similar to homework and problems from class. However, DO NOT take his class if you need any extra help in math. He tends to explain things one way and can't offer another explanation if you don't understand the first way. After sitting through all of the lectures and office hours practically everyday, I still did not walk away feeling like I had more of an understanding of the material than when I came. I highly recommend him if you have a good grasp on the material and don't need much outside help.

All of his classes are well prepared with example problems that he made up that will help you learn the material. His tests are not as hard as other professors but they're not easy. One cool thing he did for my 143 class was he only graded 2 or 3 problems out of the 5 problems on our tests. He let us choose which problems we wanted to keep. I came in to this class from High School where I had recieved 5's on both the AB and BC portion of the AP Calculus test. I assumed that I was well prepared for this class. Wrong. I got a 38% on the first midterm. I kid you not. However, I pulled through by the final, getting a A on the final and a B in the class. I had never studied so hard for a math test. As far as Kato goes, he is awesome. He's got to be the funnest teacher I've ever had. I wanted to go to class every day because he made his lectures so much fun. His random tangents about misc. things (ice cream, gems, how our day was, baseball, etc) broke up the class quite a bit and made it easier to churn though all the information. However, he doesn't seem to be the best person as far as explaining things. I had a hard time understanding his explanations sometimes. Wow. I went did some hardcore studying in the last 2 weeks of class... i guess it paid off. Kato's grading style consists of this: 3 exams of 100 points. 1 of which is doubled. + 50 for homework so X/450 is ur grade. Well i got a 38 on the first midterm, a 68 on the second midterm... and i was like oh man. i am screwed. but amazingly kato saves at least a week of review (for us it was 2). and man, it helps so much. after the 2nd exam he taught no new material, and you know how teachers try to cram new stuff into the final? kato didnt do that. well somehow... SOMEHOW i went from an F to a C, the math angels are on my side. the exams are ok, go over the EXAMPLE PROBLEMS in the book and u will be good 2 go. Father give me legs. NoR CaL.

Awesome professor. He's patient, clear, and fair. Dr. Kato does have an accent, but if English is your native language, you'll understand him perfectly. His coooky sense of humor is enough to keep you interested, as well as his 2PM cravings for chocolate. The homework is generally easy and the amount is very little (most assignments can be completed within 30-40 min). Sometimes I think the grader didn't know what he/she was doing. Random points were deducted here and there. Kato does an excellent job reviewing for both midterms and the final. He tells you what you need to be able to do, and shows you how to do it. He had no problem holding his planned lesson off for another day just to make sure the whole class was understanding the previous material. He collects homework weekly. His midterms are AMAZING!!!! he gives you a choice of doing abt 5 out of the 8 problems he writes (he does this instead of a curve). He hands out copies of his midterms and finals from previous years so you can practice them. HE'S VERY FAIR!!!! He stopped teaching new material 2 weeks b4 the final exam so that we could review. He said that anything else we would cover wouldn't be needed for math 241 anyways and asked us if we would rather keep going and finish the chapters or stop and review. Kato's overall polyrating is not accurate. I actually liked math before this class and especially this teacher. Over 70% of the class got a D of F on the second midterm, and he wouldn't curve it. And his grading is out of control. He gives little partial credit, and if you forget to put a constant(+ C) you get half credit for the whole problem even if everything else is correct. After the final, he had to curve the entire class so everyone didn't fail. I even studied with people who had a different teacher and it was ridiculous. I knew the material better than them, but I was failing and they were getting A's and B's. I would strongly not recommend him.

Kato is the best professor that I've had so far at Cal Poly, hands down. Nobody can compare to him. He explains the material very well, makes even the toughest MATH 143 concepts "cheesycakey," and is very helpful in office hours. In my class, he had a day set aside for answering homework questions (homework isn't required nor turned in, but is highly recommended to do). He also has a great sense of humor, but I won't spoil it (take his course). His midterms are pretty "cheesycakey" if you understand the material very well, but sometimes he would throw a surprise at you. His course was entirely graded on tests (2 midterms at 100 points each, plus a 100-point final = 300 points total), but he doubles the score of your highest exam so that the total is out of 400. If you want to really learn calculus and also crack up in the middle of class, rolling in laughter, take Kato. You will not regret it.

I geuss i wouldn't know a lot about Kato...but his class is easy. I only went to 4 lectures and the 3 test days and got a B. He puts 7 or 8 questions on the test and lets you choose 4. This makes it so you dont even have to know all the concepts (which could screw me for later calc classes, oh well). Just master 4 concepts per test and you'll do fine. I geuss the days i went he seemed fine. I never went because he never said anything profound. I could learn the material faster by myself from the book.

What a freakin STUD. The funniest little man I've ever come across. I found him to be a great teacher. He was very straightforward, no dirty tricks on the exams. Either you know it or you don't. Lectures were also straightforward. He presented everything in it's entirety without frills or proofs(good or bad depending on your learning style). Apparently he is a certifiable genius but you wouldn't know it because he's always giggling like he's done whip-its and rambling about dark chocolate. Take this class and you won't be sorry. If you don't you might end up on the sharp end of a short, rusty sword.

Calc 3 with Kato was very simple. Two midterms, one final, final grade an average of the three and the class was on a curve. 3 days a week presented new material, one day a week answered questions for 50 minutes. Did not assign a lot of homework at all, maybe 8 questions per section on average. I did the homework, studied the practice exams, went to a study group, and recieved an A. Very good teacher if you are looking for a light work load. Never went to his office.

Haha! Mr. Miyagi! This guy is totally Mr. Miyagi. I loved this guy's outlook on life and the way he taught. He is very laid back and old and wise. He'll probably make you smile at least once. If you attended every lecture, took notes, and asked questions during the little recitation period he holds weekly for your half of the class you should do well. He assigns homework but doesn't collect it but I'd highly recommend you do it: His tests are not easy. He does not give partial credit away very liberally on them either. I remember doing all the steps in one problem entirely correct but circling the wrong portion of my answer and only got half credit on it. But seriously, just think Mr. Miyagi. He teaches well, he's a funny guy, but he holds nothing back when he tests you. That's Mr. Goro Kato for you. Oh, and the reason I failed: I didn't study much for his tests. I didn't do any of the homework, I regularly missed class and I basically failed MATH142 the quarter before. I took the class praying I could get by with a D but I just didn't put in the effort. I just didn't have the experience to fully complete most of the problems he put on the test by the time the test came around.

Dr. Kato is wonderful. I raved about him all quarter. He is one of few professors who really care about his students and will do anything to help them do well. He takes time to make sure EVERY student knows what is going on. He does plenty of examples so you have plenty to refer to. I never went to his office hours but I should have, just to know him better. He is hilarious too, that made class fun. 2 midterms and a final, but you will be well prepared by doing the homework and practice tests. Homework is light and never collected, but you should do it to know the material. He doubles the highest test score, grades on a curve, and if you do well on the final he'll boost your grade for the heck of it. I badly failed the first midterm, aced the second, did well on the final, and pulled off a B. Definitely take this professor if you can. In fact, work the rest of your schedule around this class, he's worth it.

Yea he was great at lecture and a funny guy but when it comes to exams he will screw you over. There are only 2 exams and 1 final which make up your whole grade. No quizzes, homework, tests, nada. So if you don't do well on an exam you are screwed. On the exams he gives medium to hard problems that you solve and think you do well on but in terms of grading he screws you. I got 3 out of 4 questions right and did a stupid error on the one i got wrong. So 3/4 thats a 70 percent right? Nope he grades you on how he would do the problem so memorize exactly how he does it because if you get the right answer and don't show his pointless steps you get barely any credit.

He is a really good guy. He presents the material extremely clearly and will show every little detail. He does not mind going back and showing you how he got to where he did. Very helpful and extremely funny guy. He talks about cheese cake and ice cream alot. He is very funny. The only bad thing about him is his grading. He gives you 3 exams including the final and each have 7 problems. You only do 4/7 which are 10 points each. The entire exam is 40 points. The problem is a lot of people got screwed including myself when you get one wrong or make a minor mistake. So if you want a good foundation he is great. If you want an easy A, not going to happen unless you do very well.

Kato is a funny guy and a good math teacher. I learned all the material very well and he was easy to approach with questions. However, he is a a fairly harsh grader and does not give very big curves. I did very well on both midterms and kind of rooked the final...got a C. Its weird because I know I was in the top of the 65-person class the whole time and didn't bomb the final that hard. Whatever though, I really learned the stuff and if that's not the most important part, then what are you doing here?

Kato was my favorite professor at Cal Poly so far. I took him for 143 and got an A, so I took him again for 241 and got a B. 241 was hard no matter who you took it with. He is absolutely hilarious and is very good at teaching as well. He makes the material seem quite simple even though it is quite difficult. I was very sad I had to leave his class because he really is a cool guy. I would definitely suggest him for both 143 and 241.

Kato is a very fair professor, who will go out of his way to help his students (whose names he remembers). He jokes around in class a lot which isn't bad, but sometimes it gets annoying. The good part about this class is that if you're lazy like me, you can just not do the homework, but Kato hands out midterm and final templates a week or more in advanced, so you can just learn off of those and do well (if you can learn that way). Otherwise, he explains things pretty well as long as you can follow along, and is a really good professor!

I\'m going to go against the flow here and say that Dr. Kato is no where near as good of a teacher as some below have stated. At best, he is average or maybe slightly above average. To his credit, he is very funny, but his teaching has some shortcomings, namely his clarity. Homework assigned is not turned in and is usually unrepresentative of what will be tested on. Practice exams handed out prior to the real ones tend to be quite easier than the actual exam. Explanations can be very poor. In conclusion, Dr. Kato would be a good guy to go have a beer with, but I will try somebody else in future math courses.

Getting along with Kato Goro is very cheesey-cakey, but hold your horse (or cat, if you do not have a horse to hold). Kato Goro is a great guy, and I\'d take the class again. I took the class having already taking a Calculus III class at a community college and was going to skip 143, but the math department suggested I take it to get some of the vector stuff I might have missed. It was worth it simply for the review and to have Kato. I only did scattered homework problems before tests, but probably should have done more. The one thing that rocks and sucks about the class are the tests. There are three of them. THREE. I thought I was doing great for the second third of the quarter until I totally bombed a test, don\'t fall to the same trap. Go to his office hours often, he is extremely helpful and will even give you additional practice tests if you ask that help a lot! I think if I was learning all of the material with no background, that Kato would be a bit hard to follow, so sit up front, do the homework, and go to his office hours! Really! Take Kato! Even if you hate the subject he\'ll get you through every class with all his little sayings. Double scoop ice cream!

Honestly, Goro Kato is an above average professor. He\'s not the best but if given the choice I would take him again. He is a very fun guy and has a lot of cheesy jokes (in many different ways). He gives 2 midterms and a final. Each one of these tests is 25% of your grade with the highest score counting double. I took CALC BC in high school so this class was mostly stuff I\'d seen before but in high school I kind of blew off series and never understood them. Coincidentally, I completely bombed the 2nd midterm that covered the entire chapter on series. However, I still managed a high B in the class due the grading system. He gives practice tests which are very close to the real tests. On his tests, he sometimes says \"choose 2 of these 3 problems to do\" which is extremely helpful. If you do the homework and can comfortably complete the practice tests, an A should be \"cheesy-cakey.\"

However, I have to admit I am somewhat of a math nerd, so maybe that was why but, I think Goro is an all around awesome and fun professor. Sometimes he goes a little fast. Great professor. He goes a bit fast during the lectures, but you\'ll eventually get used to it. Helpful in office hours and he passes out one practice exam before midterms and finals. Also ask him for extra practice exams, they extremely helpful since his suggested homework problems aren\'t too useful for studying for his exams, but they\'re a must for learning the material. He also assigns one class per week to answer questions and not teach any new material, I wish all math classes had this. Calc 3 is a strange math compared to the ones you probably had taken before, its a bit hard to catch on as to what is going on, but Kato does a great job in teaching the material in a fast and efficient way, the class always went by so fast.

Though he is a good teacher and his lectures are exiting, his grading skill if he is the one who grades are in no way good. I know math its my best subject and I went into the midterm confident, however after making a few simple mistakes he takes of more than 30% of my grade. Some teachers give partial credit apparently this one or his grader does no fully understand what that is. When you lose 12% for dividing a number wrong you know that just isnt fair. If you dont mind this way of partial credit then take him he is a great teacher, but if you are the type of person who makes littl mistake or in other words human, be ready to pay the consequences

First of all, KATO IS A BOSS. Kato is a great teacher personality wise, as he will try to entertain the class since he is teaching math and well math is boring, to me at least. He always makes jokes and will try to keep everyone entertained while he teaches. However, Kato's teaching style was not the best to me. He went a little to fast for me, but i guess he would have too since he was only teaching 3 days out of the week with one day meant for questions only. However, math 143 was no cake walk as there is a lot of hard material. Kato's class consist of three test and he will double your highest score on a test which really helped me when i failed the first midterm and got a B on the second midterm. Homework is just free points so make sure you do it. His final was fair and he always gives you options on what problems to do on his test. So Kato is probably the greatest teacher ever! First of all, he is HILARIOUS. Always cracking jokes about Japanese heritage, etc. And he always calls problems "cheesey cakey" when they are easy, or when he expects us to know it :). Also, whenever you do something wrong, he will threaten to "stab you with his sword." It's hilarious. He really makes an effort to learn your names and addresses you by name in class. He's really great. I love his grading system...I'm still not sure exactly how it works. I got a 54% on the first test, 33% on the second test. Goro Kato is the bomb! He allows you to choose which questions to attempt on certain parts of the exams. Your grade is determined by: 100 pts-1st exam 100 pts-2nd exam 100 pts-Final 100 pts-Highest Exam grade among the 1st, 2nd, and Final, and 50 pts-Homework for a total of 450 points. I got a 65 on my 1st exam, 85 on my 2nd exam, and a 100 on my Final(which essentially doubled) and a 50/50 on homework. That's technically an 88.8% but he bumped my grade up because of gradual improvement! And to the past reviews that talk about how he docks off many points for algebra errors, that is NOT true! While doing a division between 2 Maclaurin Series, I subtracted wrong, so he took off 1 point out of a total 40 points on the exam. That doesn't seem harsh to me!

He gives you the previous quarter's exam as a study guide an upcoming exam and the material is almost always the same. In addition to that usually you are given an option on what problems to solve on the exam. For example it might say for problems 3 and 4 solve one. KATO IS THE MAN. Probably the most badass teacher for math. His accent isn't too bad, but he can talk really fast sometimes and lose you...but thats what office hours are for. Homework was collected once a week...sometimes once every two week, but that didn't happen too often. There were no quizzes so you have to know what you're bad at! He only had 3 tests...but the best one was doubled so your grade is really based on four. He always gives a mock midterm for you to try which represents the problems on the actual midterm very similarly. additionally, allows you to choose problems on the midterm making your test almost customized to your strengths. kato is super funny and makes going to calc something to look forward to during the day

I'm probably going to be the only one on here to give Goro a bad grade, take everything you read on here with a grain of salt, including my grading. Goro is a very nice guy, funny and easy to be with in class, however this disappears when you go into his office hours. This is okay for kids who understand calculus and dont need the extra help, but when you need help in office hours, prepare to meet a whole new Goro Kato. If you don't know what you are doing or are bad at general algebra, prepare to be mocked and made fun of, not helped. His homework is easy enough, but they do nothing to prepare you for the exams. The practice exams are way easier than his real exams, so prepare for that. What few questions you actually understand on the midterms and final will be docked down 50% if you don't have every little number and sign in the right place, or god forbid if you forget a single step. Most teachers look for a holistic approach to math, where if you show you generally get what the math is about, you wont get an A, but you will at least get a C. Not Goro. Some of the harshest grading I have seen at Poly, and almost no mercy for getting 90% of the problem correct. If I were a math major I'm sure I would have loved him, but not as an engineer. ...

Kato is an old, Japanese man, and he's really, really funny! Classes are fun and generally not boring. He's difficult to understand because he has an accent and sometimes moves quickly through concepts. He's at such a high level in terms of his understanding of the material that he sometimes doesn't realize which parts of the problem are self-explanatory and which parts need explanation. However, he's really good about answering questions. ASK QUESTIONS IF YOU'RE CONFUSED! I can't stress that enough. I promise that if something's confusing to you, everyone else is confused and they'll be thankful that someone asked him to clarify. No question is stupid. If you're having trouble, go to office hours and you can do the problems in his office and ask him for help.

Kato is a really funny and nice guy. As a professor, he understands what he's teaching but sometimes he moves through concepts too quickly. Homework is collected almost weekly, not too hard. No quizzes. But what really go a lot of the class down were the midterms. There were two midterms both containing at least one problem that we did not go over in class and were advanced versions of things we learned. It's cool that he lets you choose a problem or two for you to not complete, but his problems are above average in difficulty and he has something against giving a fair amount of partial credit. In this class, about a third of the people failed his first exam and and almost half failed his second. After studying for hours and days for the final, he made that harder than the other two tests. It wouldn't be that bad if anything was curved. Nothing is. His idea of a curve is taking your highest exam score and making it into two exams. So your grade is based on 100 points per midterm (300 including "curve"), the final also 100, and homework 50. Should you take Kato? You be the judge.

I came into this class nervous because I heard of people who got AP credit to be in Calc 3 that failed out or did not do well. However, there was really no problem in the first place. Just show up and pay attention in class; he explains concepts very well. Do all the homework, and you should be OK. If you need help with concepts, go to office hours early (or better yet try to teach it to yourself). I know some upset friends who went to office hours at the last minute, and there were already 4 other people who were waiting on him. About his tests, he looks for good *application* of the equations and concepts. Rote will not work here, and it is better that way. I reallllllllllllllllllly really do not like kato. The only people that i know that have liked him are some engineers and a lot of MATH MAJORS. he likes the smart kids. he is really smart and i dont think he relates to the kids that arent good at math. His accent is pretty hard to get used to. His jokes are reallllllly not funny and just waste class time he could be using to explain things that people dont get. if I heard the phrase "cheesey cakey" one more time i would have probably cried in class. This was my second time taking calculus three and my first teacher was so much better. kato honestly made it MORE confusing. His tests are good because you get to choose like 4/6 problems. However, i think is grading is kind of harsh and not the same across the board. In office hours he did not pay attention to me. He only talked to the guy next to me that had the same things to say. he literally had no interest in even listening to me, it was the most absurd office hour encounter ive had in all my 4 years at cal poly. he didnt understand my difficulties at all. I had my first anxiety attack that i ever had during a test in college. this experience would continue to mess me up for the next 3 years. I freaked out on a test, totally freaked out. tears just pouring out of my eyes, sweating, freaking out. and he saw and really really didnt care. i got a 28. I confronted him about it, he didnt care. I got a 69 on the final which im convinced he purposely didnt give me a 70 but whatever. I understood the course material at a 69% level. The dude wouldnt even give me a D+. He had no cares that i did so much bettter on the second midterm and final. He didnt care that my anxiety attack brought my grade down completely. it sucked. Professor Kato was a very nice guy. However he wasn't very good at teaching. He's really really smart which is part of the problem, he only knows how to explain it one way. So if you don't get it you're screwed. Lectures are fairly confusing as he doesn't really tell you what you're learning he just starts doing practice problems. If this is how you learn you'll do fine. But if you're like me and need to know why you're doing something in a particular problem you will really struggle. The tests are hard, in that they are only 5 problems so if you get one wrong your grade drops dramatically. Your grade also is only made up of 3 tests, so you have to do pretty well on all of them. But if you fail the first midterm don't panic, I did as well as half my class, and I still pulled out a C+. Overall find another teacher for calc, unless you're a math whiz.

3 tests for the course. Two midterms and a final that are all equally weighted. He does not tell you the date of the exams until it is a week before which can make it hard for planning with your other classes. His teaching style works for some but I had trouble as his example problems are not very basic. Some people in the class have already learned this content and find it okay learning it. If you are going into it with no background in Calc BC I highly recommend getting a tutor from the start. It is possible to pass, but he is not the best teacher. I found myself needing to practically teach the whole class material to myself

Kato is a great guy though and if you already took Calc BC in high school then I would highly recommend him because you already learned most of the class anyways. If you are coming out of Calc 2 though then the class may be difficult because he's not great at explaining things and makes a lot of mistakes in his example problems.

I took this class not knowing much about calc 2 thinking I would be fine and boy was I wrong. He's nice and really funny but I honestly feel like he's only a good professor for people who never have questions at the end of lecture. He does make an effort to clarify but I would end up more confused at the end of his explanations. Only take this professor if you're hella accountable cause if you aren't constantly studying for this class, odds are you will fail (just being realistic!)

Kato is definitely my favorite math teacher i've had here at poly, he really didn't expect us all to be math majors and didn't bother with proofs or anything. One of his lectures was also in a separate classroom and dedicated entirely to answering homework questions which I found extremely helpful. Also, he's really funny and makes class actually enjoyable. Take him if you can!

Kato's class will not be 'cheesy-cakey' - his tests are challenging, and he moves pretty quickly. But if you ask questions in class, take good notes, and DO YOUR HOMEWORK, you should have no issue getting a good grade in his class. Kato is a fun-loving professor who really cares deeply about his students - if you don't believe me, just go to his office hours or talk to him after class. My only gripe is he sometimes makes small arithmetic mistakes on the board during examples in class, but as the man himself says 'It is a good thing I'm not taking this class for credit' or 'I'm not so good with numbers'. Also, if you demonstrate you have learned something you messed up on your midterm on the final, he will give your grade some love, which I think is a good way of doing things. Kato is one of the most down to Earth people I have met while here at CalPoly, and if you have the chance to take him, and don't mind doing a little bit of work, I highly recommend him!

Take Kato!! He is truly awesome. He is extremely kindhearted and always wants his students to succeed. He's also very funny and keeps class interesting. Apparently he's been teaching at poly for 37 years-- the longest of any current faculty member. Anyways, he's basically a legend and very memorable. He's very very helpful during office hours, and he would even offer us cookies sometimes. When I took this class, it was structured so a 70 person lecture occurred M, W, F, and half the class had class Tues, and the other half had class Thurs. The Tues/Thurs classes we solely devoted to answering student questions. He was a bit of a harsher grader-- sometimes small mistakes could give up a large portion of your grade. On the other hand, the questions we were asked on exams felt fair... they were pretty much exactly what I was expecting. He did provide us with practice tests (you might have to ask for them), which were super helpful. His midterms were both 5 questions and you got to pick 1 to throw out. His final was 6 questions and you completed 5. Very fair and getting to throw out a question was awesome. All in all, I would say taking him is extremely worth it, and I would highly recommend him to anyone.

Professor Kato knows and conveys the subject well. Kato is an instructor who likes to keep his students entertained and therefore encouraging people to learn. I suggest you take advantage of office hours if you're having any trouble because he's very approachable to ask any questions. And he is willing to help with homework solutions during class. He tries to collect homework regularly but he'll extend the due date if there is an upcoming exam. His exams can be difficult if you don't study the right material. So you should encourage him to give a study guide that reflects what would be on a midterm or final.

Kato is by FAR the funniest teacher i've ever had, maybe not the best, but the funniest. I never went to class without laughing. His classes were always packed. He has an accent. His teaching skills i'd give him a B, but his personality is an A++.

Dr. Kato is one of the best professors I've ever had. If you go to class, do all of the homework, and do all of the sample problems, you will be prepared for the tests. I got an A is his MATH 143 class and a B in his MATH 241 class. The only thing that killed me was stupid errors on the tests. Don't make any arithmitic errors, it knocked me down a whole letter grade on a midterm. Homework is collected weekly, and there are two midterms and a final. If you're willing to do the work, you should do well. Not to mention, he is hilarious and makes lecture enjoyable.

I'm not ripping on Kato cuz he failed me, but this is the only class I have EVER gotten less than a B in since junior high. If he had spent half the time teaching the class (or maybe working on his English?) as he did making stupid jokes or inane comments about something no one really gave a damn about, maybe I would have done better. I did the homework, I went to class every day, I asked questions, and I was only taking a total of about 12 units at the time, so if I was ever gonna pass with this guy, it would have been then. He expects "mastery of the material," meaning he wants you to know stuff he didn't even teach. His tests are unfair. I could go on, but let me just finish by saying that unless you want to spend countless hours teaching yourself how to do this stuff take someone, ANYONE else. Even Colvin is better.

Dr. Goro Kato is the best math teacher I have ever had. Also, he is the funniest professor I've had here at Poly. From the very first day he had me laughing with his accent and silly jokes, which continued throughout the entire quarter. He will do his best to learn the name of every one of his students, and sincerely desires to get to know everyone. He assigns a lot of homework, but it is well worth doing. All the challenge in this class should come while doing the homework, because the exams will be a breeze. It isn't that the tests are easy, but they won't be any problem to someone who has paid attention and reinforced the concepts with homework problems. I honestly felt that he couldn't do anything more to help us succeed. He says that he wishes Cal Poly had A+ grades so he could give them (he has actually tried to submit one). I wish Polyratings had an A+, because this teacher deserves one. His lectures are very good, although he will interrupt them frequently to ask how the class is feeling, and if they want ice cream (he always wants ice cream). He invests much class time to working out student difficulties. I give Professor Kato the highest recommendation. I almost wish I was a Math major so I could have more classes with him.

Information in this class was presented in the most haphazard way, much like an earthquake, spreading out in all directions from the center until you don't know which way is up and where you started. Kato is a good guy, and his lectures were funny with his weekly update of weightloss and how much icecream and jell-o he's eaten, and when something is "easy" he says "cheesy cakey, ok?".... He left for a week and had another prof. come in and teach... it is amazing how much I understood with five minutes of this prof that Kato had been lecturing on for a week! If you are good at figuring out how to work steps from theory (which is mostly what he presents), then he would be a great teacher for you, but if you are a linear thinker at all like I am, avoid Kato like the plague because he will not go over steps, he thinks you should be able to do that on your own. He collects homework and gives three midterms (which are hard, but not too hard if you can follow him). Overall a good teacher if you think of math in terms of graphs, just not at all for me...

Dr. Kato is defenetly an entertaining instructor. Unfortuately, I am not paying to attend school here to be entertained. He is a great, AWESOME teacher for anyone who learns by means of conceptual rambling. I never could quite follow his leacutres because he would start with the basic steps or idea of the concept/section being taught, and move right into an example an some, seemingly arbitrary, point (I think it was when he got tired of explaining it step-by-step). If you learn math by learning the steps... avoid this guy. His tests are relatively difficult, but not, by any means, impossible. Homework is harshly graded by his grader, who is nothing else, if not prompt. Overall, he is an ok professor, but I was highly dissapointed after reading his ratings here at his performance.

Dr. Kato seems like a very nice guy at first. He seems to honnestly be interested in the students. However, I had a lot of trouble learning from this teacher. He is very intelligent but has a lot of problems explaining the material to students who don't have PHDs. To pass this class took a lot of hard work and luck...often students had no idea wheather they had failed or aced a test. When we asked him for help in his office hours he often told us "Oh come on!! you should know this!!! How can you not know this?" His jokes got to be very boring and repetitive after a while. If you do take this teacher good luck, you're going to need it!!

He went off to india for half the class, but hey how many of you can say your professor is busy hosting a world math conference... I aced everything cause he lets you pick which questions you want to do on the midterms and final exam. the questions are identical to the examples he does in class, and the question section on tuesday/thursday is really helpful if you dont understand anything. Just pay attention to examples, and you'll be set. homework hardly counts, but do it anyway.

Dr. Kato is awesome. His lecture is fun, and he is hilarious! Don't be fooled by his upbeat attitude though, because he moves quickly through the lectures, and if you don't pay attention, you could fall behind. Keep up with homework to help with tests. His tests are short and difficult, but do-able, but watch out for small stupid mistakes, because they can come back to haunt you. Homework is not a huge part of the grade (usually), but it proves good practice for the tests. The T/R meeting he reviews homework, and are not necessary to attend, but he goes over the homework in it, so if you have troubles in homework, it couldn't hurt. Evaluation: take him, he is awesome!

Kato is the most crazy, unforgiving professors there is. If you want to go to a class that is fun, take him then, but if you want to learn, stay away! He teaches his own way, one minute hes talking about partial derivatives, the next minute he is asking how peoples weekends were. Then he will move on into laGrange Multipliers and ask the class who has the oldest living relative. He says things are cheasy cakey which is his wacked up version of easy, well of course they are easy to him. His tests are so Hard, he does not curve, 2/3 of the class failed his first test, and a little less than 1/2 failed his second. So I can safely assure you that I was not the only one to fail his class.

Too bad I looked to Polyratings before this class! What a dissapointment Kato turned out to be! Sure, he is fun in class, but I am hear to master calculus, not have fun... this teacher doesn't do both! I would go to office hours and leave more confused then when I entered, and never ask him to explain anything in another way, because trust me - he can't. He will make an attempt but will just go back to the original way he explained things, with some confusing transitions between explinations! I only missed one class, did every homwork problem, and generally worked my ass off in this class, with absolutely no help from Kato whatsoever. Sure, maybe I deserved the D+ I recieved in the class because I didn't master the material, but it is so frustrating to have a teacher tell you that what you are struggling with is easy! HE DIDN'T TEACH... HE JUST WORKED OUT PROBLEMS ASSUMING THAT STUDENTS WOULD PICK UP HOW TO DO IT AND THAT WE WOULD THINK IT WAS AS EASY AS HE DID! I really wish Dr. Kato would have had the same compassion for his students that he did for the starving children in India... plus, he was gone during the final AND we didn't recieve our grades until it was too late to crash another 241 class (given we wanted to re-take it). All in all, this professor is the biggest dissapointment I have had at Cal Poly - and I have had some bad professors - too bad...

Kato rocks! He is an awesome professor. He's funny, smart, nice, and explains things very well. The class was extremely easy for me, and he does a lot of things to make it that way. If you average an A on both midterms, you dont have to take the final. If you take all the tests, he doubles your best score. He puts 6 problems on a test and lets you choose 4 to do, so if you dont know one or two of them, you just dont do those problems. And even with him being so easy(for me at least) i still learned a lot. And he is extremely nice and friendly. I highly reccommend him for any math class you can get him for. He's awesome.

Such a fun teacher. Three days a week it was a double class, and one day a week was just the single class where he'd answer homework problems for an hour. There was a lot of homework, and the grader would choose only 2 or 3 problems to look at, so if you didn't do those, then you got no credit. Other than that, the tests were very straight forward, there's no way you could feel lost if you understood everything in your notes and practice tests (which he goes over). I never let myself study for more than an hour and a half before his test because I didn't want to over study. His class was so fun to go to just because of his optimism. He was very inspiring everyday, and I feel like he really is enjoying life more and more as it goes, just like he says he is. He knew my name, and everyday wanted to know how everyone's day was. What a great teacher and person all around. Take him, take him, take him.

Has a slight accent problem, but his lectures are still very helpful. Uses great examples and presents the material beautifully. Very lenient with assignments, and almost always knocks problems off the homework just cause we asked him to. The three tests are of fair difficulty, not too hard, and he lets you choose 5 problems to do out of 7 on the test, or 6 or 9 or something along those lines, and you're graded on the ones you choose.

Kato is the man. Take him at all cost. I havent taken a math class in about a year and a half and i had no problem picking up what we learned. He relates the current subject matter to past similar subjects in earlier math to make a relations. This was very helpful since it simplifies a lot of concepts. We had homework due at the end of the week. Three tests (including final) which are all worth the same 100pts/each and homework worth 50. He doesnt curve but the does double your best test score. So the class is out of 450. Do the homework, i cant stress that enough...the problems are very helpful and similar to the tests. His lectures are vital as well. DOnt expect to not go to lecture and do well since he explains the stuff really well and learning from the book is way harder. Dr Kato is funny, goofy, brilliant, wise, and a good person. But, he is an average teacher at best. Half of the time I couldnt follow what he was doing and if you sit on the right side of the classroom you will not even be able to see the problem he is doing because he completely blocks the board and rushes through each example by himself. A lot of times I couldnt even see the problem until he was done and then I had to hurry up and copy it before it got erased. If you go to office hours you will also be confused. It can be hard to understand what he is saying, he has a fairly thick accent, and a lot of times he couldnt understand what I was saying. Communication is huge in learning math, and it is hard to communicate with Kato. I hate writing this borderline negative review of him because he is extremely nice and I cant fault him for his accent or teaching style. His tests are also difficult. They are all pretty much the same as the practice tests he gives you only much harder versions of similar problems, they will look foreign. He isnt the worst teacher Ive had at this school by any means, it is just frustrating that he could be one of the better teachers here if he were just a little different.

I actually WANTED to come to class and learn calc 4 (crazy huh?). He's really laid back and has a quirky sense of humor. Plus, he made calc 4 really "cheesy cakey" The only small downside for me is that your score is based off 3 exams and I unfortunatly screwed up the first one pretty bad (but did really well on the last two). He assigns homework but doesn't collect it and there are no quizzes. But you HAVE to go to all his classes and take really good notes if you expect to pass his tests (unless you're just a math genius). Dr. Kato is by far the best math teacher at Cal Poly. I have had a lot of good math teachers so that says a lot. He really breaks down the material into its simplest form and doesn't bore the class with derivations of formulas and other useless junk like that. I honestly believe he could teach calculus to a five year old and they would know it better than a college student who was taught by another professor. The man just knows his stuff from front to back and he is one of the nicest guys in the world. He was also helpful in office hours on the questions I had. The grading for the class seems kind of scary at first because your grade is based on two midterms and the final which are all worth a hundred points. Your best test grade is doubled so your total grade is out of four hundred points. It seems bad but believe me you will be well prepared for the test. Just do the homework! READ THIS. I WILL GIVE YOU THE FACTS!!! \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ -Kato is super funny. Great. -He doesn't understand how to get the students involved in the material. -He gives out homework, but he doesn't grade it. The homework he assigns are random problems that he thinks of at the end of class. He literally looks at the book and decides which ones to give you. Extremely annoying.. the least he can do is think of which problems to give us before hand! -His tests are completely different than the homework. -His tests are hand written and messy, causing the mind to become disorganized, scrambled, and nervous. -He gives out 4 random problems on each test. Each one is very difficult. -The entire grade consists of 2 unfair midterms and a final. -His practice tests are easier than the actual test. He tells you the actual test is easier than the practice test! MISLEADING! -UNFAIR!!!!!!! HIS GRADING METHOD IS BOGUS I DON'T CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS. PEOPLE GIVE HIM GOOD RATINGS BECAUSE HE IS A GOOD GUY! -The sad part is, after all the crap I've been through in this class, I still like him. WTF?!

I am the one that wrote the evaluation below this one. I should clarify something. Kato is a good teacher when it comes to explaining the material. If you take him, you will be forced to learn the material. If you want to learn as much as you can, choose him. If you want to get a fair grade, choose another teacher.

Kato is a great teacher, but you have to put in the time with the material. If you bomb the first two midterms, go talk to him. He curves the class at the end of the quarter, and if you show that you've learned from your mistakes, he'll radically boost your grade. I got a 60% on one midterm and 37% on the other. I talked to him after that, did well on the final, and he gave me a B in the class. Pretty awesome guy if you put in some effort.

Kato is a boss. His tests are extremely difficult, but he gives you more than enough materials to do well. Before each test he gives you at least one if not more exam from previous quarters, and the questions are similar in style. He is extremely helpful in office hours and an all around great guy. Hands down, my favorite professor at Cal Poly. Calc 4 is a hard class no matter who you take, so all the people below me knocking him for being too hard need to stop partying and start opening books and studying. I highly recommend Kato to anybody who needs to take a math class.

BRILLIANT man, great professor, fun guy. what more do you want in a math class?? yes, his tests are hard. but dont expect to just breeze on through a 200 level math class at Cal Poly without putting in the time and effort. his office hours are very helpful, he prepares you constantly for the midterms and final, and he gives you many useful life lessons along the way. If i could i would definitely take him again. Don\'t listen to the guys who pussies out just because of a couple hard tests.

Kato is by far the funniest math professor at all time, and easily the smartest guy in the entire math department. If you have a chance, take this man for 241. I haven\'t had him for the other calc classes, but I think he could make anyone understand multivariable calc. He makes it cheeseycakey!

Dr.Kato is a funny man. He is nice. But what I didn't like about him is that he did not give much partial credit. Just messing a tad bit on one problem and you can forget about getting an A on that test. I don't have too much to say about him because it's a routine everyday. Go to class, take notes, study, take the midterm/final. There's not a day that it's any different. But out of all the calculus teachers, Kato is your best bet. He's really nice.

He at first comes off as a great, humorous guy, but the quiz results are a lot lower than you'd expect. Office hours are a joke; expect just to repeat your homework on your own in his office, which him pointing out what you did wrong when you're done, rather than having him help you through it / teach it. If you understand the material fluently, and happen to make a single simple mistake copying a number, or forgetting a negative, don't expect much partial credit. The most one usually gets for that type of a mistake is a 2/10, which is unaffordable on a 6-problem quiz/test/final. The first midterm everyone was shocked at how badly they did because of the hard grading, and the final was just the same- 6 problems, solve 5, forget a negative and miswrite an number and you fail the class.

All the math teachers I've had at CalPoly have been good to excellent. That said, Goro Kato could make a strong case for being my favorite. He is an excellent teacher, and he's also hilarious. He makes math cheesy cakey! Kato covers the concepts quickly but thoroughly and so he has a lot of time to just work examples on the board. When he does so, he always does them in the same way, making sure to explain each step, so that the process of solving a problem becomes very clear to the students. Of course, his tests can be challenging, he doesn't want to give easy problems that "insult your intelligence", and he does make a lot of death jokes, but overall Kato combines the perfect combination of engaging lectures and reasonable homework load.

Honestly, if you do the homework and study notes, then you should get an A. This means do the homework thoroughly, look up solutions, understand it. Highlight equations from notes and memorize them. He tests mainly on application of equations. It helps to create an equation sheet before tests and memorize it. He hands out previous midterms as study guides before each coming midterm and those are extremely helpful when done on time. His final is a lot like a midterm, just longer. Class isn't difficult, and Kato makes coming to class enjoyable. I would definitely recommend taking this class. If you can keep up with the moderate workload, you'll get an A. If you're lazy, you can still pass this class, no problem.

Goro is amazing. His lectures are amazing, and he is very invested in his students. Very easy to get an A or B if you go to lecture, understand HW, and study for the midterms. If you have the chance, TAKE GORO!!!!! I swear you won't regret it.

I rated Kato last year when I had 143 and I still recommend him as a professor. However, this time around the exams were a bit...less than fair in my opinion. I feel I had a pretty strong understanding of the material yet only received a 77 on each of the midterms, which was actually about 10-15% higher than the class average on the second midterm. If you want to know the material well, I'd say certainly take Kato, he's one of the best at teaching the material, but if you're looking for an easy grade, I'd maybe take someone else for 241.

Kato is fantastic. Our class had an unusual set-up; we had class MWF and then half the class would come on Tues, half on Thurs. He'd use these days to answer questions about the homework which was extremely helpful! In regular class days, he presents the material with a lot of sample problems which helped me most. He's very clear and reviews concepts from Calc I, II, and III that apply to new material. There's weekly homework, but as long as you do a little at a time you'll be ok (don't put it off until the night before like I did!) I earned a C in the class and a low C on both midterms, but I definitely could have done better if I hadn't taken such a heavy load that quarter. They were very straightforward and sometimes in class he'll hint that a certain type of problem will be on the test, so take lots of notes!

GET THIS PROFESSOR IF AT ALL POSSIBLE! Professor Kato is EXTREMELY knowledgeable about calculus and made the transition into multi-variable calculus quite smooth. He's also a very charismatic guy and makes class very entertaining.

Kato is such a cool and forgiving professor haha. He's funny and genuinely wants his students to pass. He teaches through examples, so if you're into that, take him!! But I personally did not really like his teaching style. He conveys the material through examples, and doesn't really clarify certain steps. I also found his second midterm and final much harder than the practice. Don't get me wrong though, he's a great professor; I just wasn't too fond of his teaching style.

Mr. Miyagi was a pretty chill and funny teacher. At the very least you'll get good snapchats out of the class. I went into the class thinking it would be super easy from all the reviews I had read. I didn't pay attention in class and failed both midterms. If you like watching him do hella examples without really explaining why you do things you'll like his class. Also I think he changes things up every quarter but for us he would give us a super easy practice midterm and say something like "this is hardest problem I can give to you" so you'd think "oh I'm chillin then I barely have to study". That's wrong. You'll get shafted by his tests. Just do hella problems before each test that are similar to the practice and you won't be like me having to get over 100% on the final to pass the class. (Which is possible because there is an extra credit problem and the final is relatively easy)

Kato's a wonderful man. Despite what my grade in this class might say, this class is generally pretty easy. I got more than a 95% on both my first midterm and the final. I got less than a 25% on the second midterm (pretty much set myself up for failure tbh). He ended up rounding my grade up to a C+. He honestly was one of the better teachers I've had at Poly so far.

I took Kato for MATH 143 and 241, and averaged about a B+. Dr. Kato is a dope old Japanese man who I'm pretty sure was going to become a kung-fu master but instead became a math professor. He's got this deep Japanese voice and says a bunch of funny random stuff whenever he feels like it in his lectures. He teaches mostly by quickly explaining concepts and following them with numerous examples that he does on the board. As long as you take his class seriously, he will do his best to explain concepts to you, that is if you make the effort to ask him to. He's super nice and approachable and has an impressive knowledge of math stuff. I highly recommend taking him.

Professor Kato is great character. He is funny, mostly approachable, and is pretty understandable even through his accent. Kato's teaching pace moves through the quarter's material faster than any other professor, and one lecture often covers an entire chapter section or more. He writes difficult exams that are usually only 5 problems, and you will be expected to complete only 4 of them. If you've studied enough, his exams are reasonable and he usually gives a fair bit of partial credit. He's always in a good mood to teach and tell jokes. Kato also tries to gauge the understanding of his students by looking at facial expressions, but he's not always right when he thinks we are comfortable with the material, so speak up of you don't understand, he's very accommodating. He also spends a lot of time on examples, while only touching briefly on the actual concepts. Overall, he's funny, kind, and usually accommodating, you just have to speak up to be heard.

He is an okay teacher. He talks really fast and moves on even when we don't understand things but his tests are easy. He gives you practice tests and they are just like the tests. I think thats how I was able to get an A. Go into office hours for help because he will slow down and make sure you get it. He doesn't even make that many jokes but when he does they are pretty funny. Some are really bad though. He is really smart and thinks students are a lot smarter than we are... at least he believes in us. I would say take his class. I learned a lot and was able to do well because of him.

Goro is the most laid back teacher. He really wants students to earn an A. If you show improvement throughout the grade he will bump up your grade. Homework load is about 2-4 hours per week if you take your time to understand it. Your grade consists of 2 midterms (100 pts each), a final (100 pts) and homework (50 pts). If your grade is low going into the final, and you score an A on the final, you will receive an A in the class. Goro also doesn't like to give out minuses so usually an A- is an A. The class is laid out so 3 days is a class of 70 and 1 day is class of 35. On the day with class of 35, Goro answers homework questions and explains tough concepts. Overall, I would recommend Goro.

Goro was the most two-sided professor I've had at Cal Poly. He seems like a genuinely nice person and I'm sure his teaching style works well for some. But if you ever have any issue with anything, be prepared to fail. The tests are very difficult and many students failed both midterms, by goro's own admission. He is not good at answering student questions, he was extremely unresponsive to important emails, and was impossible to get ahold of. Despite multiple emails, trips to his empty office hours, and questions at the end of lecture about meeting, I never got a chance to meet with him for help because I ha d a conflict with his office hours. When he lectures, his 3D drawings are impressively good but his mastery of the subject matter makes him terrible at explaining it, and his thick accent (despite the fact that I speak his native language, Japanese) makes him occasionally quite hard to understand. If you take his class, be sure you don't get sick, miss any class, or want a good grade because he will make no attempt whatsoever to help you get back on track and his vicious grading leaves no wiggle room.

I will warn everyone now, POWER may list his class as a 30 person class or so, but you may end up with a huge class of 70! Yes, it's really two classes in one. Now as a teacher is great, smart, informative. However, he being a professor and a master at his subject breezes EXTREMELY fast through the subject matter, not even attending the recitation will help you. His accent certainly does not help in the learning process either. If you are confident in your linguistic understanding and as equally confident in your quick adaptive self learning skills then by all means feel free to take Kato-sensai. Otherwise take the more typical classroom learning set up, don't waste your time even attempting him.

Dr. Kato is definitely an interesting professor that teaches well and keeps the class entertaining with his funny stories and mannerisms. I'd say 244 with him is an easy B but probably a difficult A. He assigns about 6 problems per test and you get to choose around 4 to solve. You never know what he'll put on there, so you have to study all the material. Still, he is one of the better math professors.

Dr.Kato is the coolest---not only does he entertain the class but he conveys the material EXTREMELY well. He's able to explain it on any level and he's always willing to help. His grading system is fair and you must work for your grade. He doesn't overwhelm you with work and the best (important) part about him is that he LOVES to teach and he's a happy guy (he says so all the time). Approachable and great professor. I took his class Winter quarter and towards the end, students were swarming into his office trying to get permits signed for classes he would teach during Spring quarter. His class is not "cheesey cakey" but he makes it interesting and he wants you to LEARN, not just regurgitate info. I highly recommend this guy. Also, Math 248 is known as the "do-or-die" class and many who failed or withdrew passed with Kato not b/c it was easy but b/c his presentation of the material is clear, concise, and "seal-tight" and I'm "serial."

Very disorganized, couldn't present the course material clearly. His midterms are extremely difficult, and they are MUCH harder and different than the practice questions he gives. He also doesn't explain the more basic terms/concepts that much; he has the idea that you should be able to fully understand those topics yourself and then he skips to the harder concepts (which isn't helpful considering how methods of proof is a new approach to math for most people). Kato is a funny professor who likes to joke around. I thought his explanations would be much easier. Unfortunately, this doesn't work for Method of Proofs. First of all, he is very unorganized. There is no structure in his class. Every day, he would write all the proofs off his head so you don't know what kinds of answer he's looking for on the exams. Second, his homework assignments are a joke. The textbook problems don't reflect the materials we're learning in class because his exams are wayyy too difficult. Third, his explanations suck. He doesn't explain the concepts well so if you're reviewing some materials on your own you will become confused. Like someone said, avoid Kato.

This material was very new to me, so I had to dedicate more time to this class. Goro wasn't helpful in explaining most of the concepts clearly, so I often had to rely on the text. Homework is pretty easy if you pay attention in class, and is worth a good amount of your grade compared to most classes. If you pay attention to some of the more strange proofs he does in class, and are able to replicate them, then you should be fine for the tests. Overall, it's a self-taught class. He's also really funny so even when his class can get frustrating he keeps a really light mood. Good luck
