Riggs is a great professor. His grading system is pretty generous and the course material is taught effectively enough. Having said that, 212's assignments had fairly interpretable instructions. He's not that great at clarifying or alleviating questions with the assignments but that may just be a result of the flexible nature of the projects themselves.

I had Dr. Riggs for CRP 213 in his first quarter at CalPoly. He is great teacher but even more-so a great listener. He always was responsive and took time to circle back if there was something the class wasn't getting -- which was great. He also made sure to take out of class time with students. My biggest fear is that he will become too popular and the department will make him so busy that he won't be able to give students the same attention in the future.

My advice is to search "Billy Riggs Band" online before taking this class. It will enhance the experience. Also, be selective when you choose groups, you will be spending a lot of time with those people.

Received an A. A really smart professor with a lot of research publications. He has is his own Wikipedia page. Not much to say about this professor, but he left San Luis Obispo to be closer to his family which speaks volumes about this professor. Like another professor he specializes in transportation, but in reality he is a grand master in GIS or Jedi I forgot. His motto is learn by doing by teaching yourself. Most of the time you are teaching yourself rather than him teaching you hahaha! Which in reality is the best teaching! :)

As a first-quarter freshman, this class was a real eye-opener to the "Learn by Doing" motto at Cal Poly. We worked on projects that tested teamwork and creativity, as well as the computer programs we learned throughout the quarter. You DON'T need to buy the programs used in the course if you're willing to only work on class projects in the CRP computer lab. Overall a good experience. The T.A.'s were helpful as well.

New class for CRP; much needed since GIS can be tough to use and I had wanted to take it for a while. Class offered lots of license to create your own work, with guidance on the use of the technology along the way. Hopefully the department keeps on letting Riggs teach this course. He's great and really cares about students and what they want.

Cool class especially if you are motivated and self directed. Dr. Riggs provides a lot of assistance, guidance and expertise but gives you room to do what you want to do. I heard other students complain about this, but I think the flexibility rocks. I should also note that it's cool that you can take this class regardless of what level of experience you are at, and get something out of it. Not the same can be said for every blended grad / undergrad course.

Nice guy and smart, but hasn't settled into his job yet. Still new as a professor, but I'm sure he will improve alot over the next few years.

Dr. Riggs is one of the best professors I had in City Planning at CalPoly. He is young, energetic and pragmatic and did a great job preparing me for professional practice in this course. He did a great job including outside professionals in the course who offered great insights. Highly recommended!
