Jennifer Olmstead is by far one of the best lecturers I have seen at Cal Poly. Her vast knowledge of health topics shows as she gives a wealth of relevant, useful information surrounding every subject. Though it is a women's health class, Jennifer tailors the class to all students, making it very applicable to any student's future in terms of family planning, sexual health, physical and emotional well-being, as well as health care management. The work load for the class is simple: two fairly easy tests, a short research topic paper, and a discussion forum every other week on whatever is being covered in lecture. Since you don't have to stress over memorizing information and the lectures are fun and interesting, you are guaranteed a good grade just by going to class. Overall, I found this class to be rich with practical and invaluable information that I will use later in life. I would recommend KINE260 to any student needing to take a GE-D4.

Jenny Jenny Jenny. Going to this class, I had heard numerous horror stories about her impossible Nutrition classes and I was terrified. However, she's a big softie on the inside. She offers quizzes that are straight vocab (about 100 definitions but most are VERY easy to guess) and you can re-take several of them. Her exams are straight-forward and easy, lots of essay questions. As long as you can demonstrate understanding of the material, you will for sure get 10/10 on essay questions. There's one big group presentation at the end of the class and about 1/5 of the class is easy lab points. The lab section of this class is super cool because you get to choose when to have it and which lab you wanna do (and most of them are pretty cool). Overall Jenny's amazing and I highly recommend her for this class.

She actually makes the class pretty tangible and enjoyable. The tests are pretty clear and what you would expect. She's very good at answering questions in class about anything relating to the topic--she is quite knowledgeable. Overall, she presents the content very well.

Olmstead is one of those professors that makes you work hard for your grade. You HAVE to attend lecture to get a decent grade on her tests. Her lectures are very DRY!!!! but you have to push thru them to get at least a passing grade in the class. Her teaching style is very mediocre- i don't think teaching is her strength because her delivery of information SUCK a$$. But if you attend office hours, she is quite personable. There is no way to get around her classes because she is the only professor that teaches them sadly. Olmstead contributes to the KINE department but she really should not teach, but stick to Internship Coordinator. She is a great person though. P.S I think the first 2 reviews are NOT students

This is a service-learning class, combining community outreach with traditional lectures. The community outreach component (aka the "lab" portion) is very rewarding. You get the unique opportunity to work with athletes with varying levels of ability--acting as a trainer, mentor and facilitator. However, the traditional lecture component of the class is repetitive and dry. With that being said, Olmstead is a fair grader and she wants her students to succeed! Your grade is made up of lab (200 pts), 2 small reflection papers (25 pts per paper), group presentation (50pts), a midterm (75 pts), and a final (125pts). Lab is essentially "freebie" points as long as you show up with a positive attitude and interact with the athletes. The reflection papers and group presentation are very straightforward and graded easily. The midterm is also very straightforward, consisting of fill in the blank and free response questions that come directly from lecture. The final however, is very difficult! The final consists of very specific multiple choice questions, fill in the black and in-depth free response questions. With that being said, she grades the final very leniently and potentially curves the it. TIPS FOR GETTING A GOOD GRADE: communicate with your lab teacher if you miss hours (there are makeup hour options), the study guides for the exams do NOT cover all the material on the exams (study ALLL your in class notes), allot about 2 solid days to study for the midterm, 50% of the final is based off of questions from the group presentations--SO TAKE NOTES DURING PRESENTATIONS and research each topic independently--she asks specific questions about the topics (ex "What is the most common form of muscular dystrophy and how does the pathophysiology differ"), and allot about 3 to 4 days to study for the final.

^The above review written in March 2016 is the most accurate regarding the class. This was probably my favorite class taken simply because of the lab portion and sensory deprivation activities. They were incredibly eye opening and surprisingly fun! The lectures are very dry and, for the first half of the class, unnecessary to attend. I did ok on the midterm and only studied for the hour or so leading up to the test... if you're actually looking to do well then maybe dedicate at least the night before to studying. The final was way more difficult; it was primarily based off of the disease/disability presentations that students did, so be sure to study those and even more regarding those topics. She ended up curving the final (a lot I assume because I got a B and I definitely didn't deserve anywhere near that)... I don't think Jenny wants this to be one of the classes that is difficult and stressful, but instead would rather it be fun, interesting, and eye-opening. The things you learn and participate in are truly remarkable. I don't think I'll ever forget what I learned in this class and will carry it with me forever.

Professor Olmstead is a very sweet professor who truly cares about Adapted Physical Activity. Lectures are extremely dry, but this course has taught me a lot about how to approach people with disabilities in the most respectful and inclusive manners. It can easily be an uncomfortable environment for some to work with people with disabilities if you are not used to it, but the lab section breaks you of that very quickly - especially if you choose Friday Club as your lab! (Side note: the labs associated with this class may not meet during those times, they are just set up to enroll. Labs are to be completed on your own time. It is not until the first few classes that you will choose your lab/community involvement choices so dont have the lab days scare you away! Basically you have to complete 30 hours by the end of the quarter by working in different programs. some of which meet weekly while others are completely on your own time.)

Jennifer is by the far the most outstanding teacher within the Kinesiology department. As mentioned above, her knowledge is vast and surpasses any professor in Kinesiology. She is more deserving of the title Dr. than most professors because she can teach any material in a clear and articulate way without any condescending tones or making you feel stupid. She is truly passionate about her classes and students...she takes your success as of the utmost importance. You can learn a lot from a person like this, don't waste it.

Jenny is by far one of the best KINE teachers on this campus!!! Without a doubt take her if you have the opportunity. Not the best about responding to emails but that is her only flaw--other than that Jenny is great. She is incredibly knowledgeable on the subjects she teaches and is a great lecturer. Not a stifler when it comes to grading either.

Great course overall as far as material and how it is taught, but she's not very good at answering emails.
