As a student who does not like writing, I enjoyed this class. She is extremely helpful in office hours. Go in and get help for absolutely any part of your essay. Even if you're stuck coming up with an idea for your essay she will help you. Participate in class discussions and show that you're interested in the class and it will be reflected positively in your grade. She lets you miss two classes without any sort of penalty and gives you a 3 day extension on an essay even though class only meets 20 times and you only have to write two essays. The class is interesting and she is a fair grader. I am not a strong writer and still did very well on my first essay. Overall, I would recommend taking Dr. Kauffmann!

Prof Kauffmann is a great teacher who actually makes english interesting. Very helpful in office hours and easy to approach. I have always hated english classes but Prof Kauffmann made this class one of my favorites.

Prof Kauffman is amazing. I'm taking this as a GE so it was so fun to get out of my math and science-based major classes. She assigns very reasonable amounts of reading which I personally found very interesting. Lectures are engaging and she creates an environment that is easy to answer questions and contribute to the discussion. Tests are fair and she tells you what works and terms to be familiar with. I think she is a really fun and knowledgeable person. This class was really fun and the best part is there is no writing requirement.

As a student who does not enjoy reading at all, I really liked this class with Prof Kauffman. There were no essays; only exams, quizzes, and a couple of short in-class writing assignments she does for participation points occasionally. The books and readings were not too difficult, and even if you don't understand it, she goes over them in class the next day. The pop quizzes she does on the readings are super easy questions too, like "what was the name of this character?" or "what happened to this character at the end of the story?" Her exams are super straight forward and are mainly on lecture material, so go to class. The only thing to be worried about is that when you read the novels for the class she assigns A LOT of pages for homework, so you should keep up. But, the books can be really interesting and Kauffman teaches straightforward and calls it as it is. Definitely learned a lot from this class and it made me like reading more. I recommend.

Kauffmann is a good professor for a number of reasons but she fails to be GREAT because of the way she responds to students when they contribute to discussion in class. She does not affirm nor acknowledge students putting themselves out there to talk about the works and for that reason I feel like a lot of students end up thinking that they missed the mark or were not making a good enough point. Even when she vibes with the comment, she tends to respond with an, "Okay, mhm" or a look of concern. In office hours, she's really really helpful! She's such a kind and unique person, super super smart and gifted. I probably went to her office hours 3-4 times while drafting my final research paper (10 painful pages). One midterm, one final, both relatively easy if you pay attention and try a little. The most challenging part of the class is coming up with an original topic to write on for the final paper.

Dr. Kauffmann is really great at listening to her students. She is very helpful and presents her information clearly. The only drawback is that this class does require a lot of reading and work (I realize its an English class but for non majors this work load is a bit overwhelming). I think that if she would just cut back a little the course content would be perfect. If you don't read its hard to participate and the class is mostly discussion based. A huge part of your grade is participation so make sure you are willing to contribute to the class. She is also super helpful when it comes to passing the GWR. I would really recommend this class.

Dr. Kauffmann is intelligent, funny, and sweet. I thought that this class was relatively easy. There was one midterm, a reading-check quiz about every week, one 5-6 page paper, a final (same format as midterm), and a take-home final that was just a 3-4 page paper. However, I think participation was worth 15% of the grade, so if you don't like to speak in class it might be difficult to get a solid A. She is super helpful in office hours and seems to genuinely care for her students. Although there was a substantial amount of reading, I think it was pretty fair for a 300 level class.

This is only Dr. Kauffmann's first year teaching at Cal Poly, but I think she is already among the best English professors here (this coming from an English major who has taken quite a few already). She is extremely knowledgeable in many areas, as well as friendly, a fair grader (unless you slack off or don't read), and an interesting lecturer. Her midterm (there's only one) and final are easy to ace if you study and read. There is a large amount of reading, so non-readers looking for an easy GE or GWR should be warned (though why would you honestly take an ENGL class anyway?), but the class' texts include some really intriguing novels like Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway and Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day which I highly recommend.

Dr. Kauffmann was a good choice if you're looking to fulfill the GWR! It's quite a but of reading but I found all of it interesting and important to the course. There is one essay, a midterm and final. Other assignments included online discussion posts and about seven pop reading quizzes! Most classes are discussion based and are pretty helpful. I liked the course all together. And there are three opportunities to pass the GWR. Also.. I have all the books for this class and will see them for cheaper than the bookstore or online. I took this class not only to fulfill C4 but also because it covers the GWR. This class consists of random reading quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 final (not cumulative), 2 essays, and a take home essay at the end of the course. Kauffman is a great teacher. She tries her best to get the whole class involved in discussing the readings. If you take notes on what she says about the readings, it will help a lot with studying for the midterm and final. Also, I went to her office hours numerous times to get help with the essays. She was very patient with me and helpful. Another great thing about this class is she gives you one 72 hour extension to use on one of the essays, no penalty. Definitely recommend this class!

Great teacher! She is also a fair grader. In a discussion-based class she is very good at keeping the energy level as high as in can be from 6pm to 8pm...which is dinner time, so most people are thinking about food. Be prepared to add to class discussion. :)

Missed the first day, went to the second day. Went to the midterm. Went to the Final. Three days of class total. I got a B, easy. This kind of shit gives our school a bad name.
