Curt is an awesome guy. While he is extremely laid back, he is very willing to help you out, and extremely enthusiastic to talk to about anything regarding the construction process.

Professor Illingworth focused mainly on the technical side of the class with an emphasis on perspectives and shading. All assignments were done in hard line. Although his grading policy was a little unclear it was certainly agreeable due to things like the absence of a late policy and the ability to get your grade changed if you felt you didn't agree with what you got. He was very eager to help his students though.

Illingworth doesn't work out of the syllabus. He will take assignments from the syllabus, but as far as rules go, it's mostly yours to decide. If you feel that your design or drawing would be better a different way, he would encourage it. He doesn't show mercy in criticizing work either, he'll either tell you that he thinks it's horrible or good, but he will always give you ways to improve upon it. The work load is less than other classes, which I almost regret taking the class because I didn't feel like I might have learned as much from him as another professor. His grading system seems to be fluid... he really makes up grades for the most part, get on his good side and make sure he knows your name. Try to go one step beyond the other students to get recognized.

I had Curt for 121 and then for 123. I got a B first quarter even though I felt I deserved an A, not the end of the world. I figured out why. I sat next to his favorite. Yep, he definitely has favorites. I did luck out 3rd quarter becuase I had him before, unlike some of the other students. Because he knew me, he gave me an A. The effort I put into my work did not change. Like every other evaluation says, he is relaxed you get out way early every day, every day that you actually go to class. I felt like I did not learn as much as I should have and wanted to, but oh well. So, my suggestion get close to him, but watch out for his stinky breath. It's bad.

If you want to learn something about architecture that is applicable to you future studies, DON'T take Illingworth. He also grades based on who he knows and likes in the class.

curt is a great guy. He's really laid back and its really easy to get a good grade in his class. Makes sure he likes you and he'll give you an A. He's not THE best at explaining, and he's a bit repetitive but I enjoyed having him as a teacher. He doesn't worry too much about due dates, and i loved that. He's just really chill.. chillingworth

Curt is probably the easiest beginning arch teacher you can take. That can be good or bad--we did not cover as much information as the other classes, but it was so much less stressful. We usually got out of class an hour and a half early and only went the full 3 hours maybe twice. He is nice, but he does not really have a set grading system. He mostly grades on how he thinks you did in the class overall, so probably if you start improving you will get a better grade. Some people hated the class, but if you like easier classes, this is definitely the teacher to take.

Well, the guy is inconsistent. For example, say I drew the exact same picture as another student, well there would be a good chance that one of the pictures would get lees of an adequate grade, because Illingworth openly admits his inconsistency. It is rather unfair to say the least. Take this guy if you want an easy load, because he does half of the work that the other profs will ever give you. He is somewhat lazy

I would suggest that you only take curt first quarter to get used to your transition to cal poly. He's really easy and teaches you what you need to learn by the end of first quarter. He's laid back and easy, but that isn't neccessarily a good thing. Don't get used to the laid back and easiness because that will go away second year.

I would reccomend taking Illingworth for beginning architecture classes. He is a fair grader: as long as you do your work you will get a B, do it with some thought and care, and you will get an A. Most of his explainations are not very interesting, but they are straight-forward and informative. Of course, there is homework daily, but you get to practice it in class, so it is not too difficult. Best of all, Illingworth understands that you have other classes, and, not to mention, a life, so he goes easy on you during midterms and finals week, and class never goes the full three hours, but you can always stay and ask for help after everyone else leaves if you want. The final project is involved, but you get plenty of time to work on it.

Curt is a really really nice guy. Granted that him talking in circles and about his one precious church that he is designing downtown will make you want to pour your primacolor pen fluid down your ears to drown out his droning, he is an incredibly chill teacher. Really, just call him Chillingworth. Every assignment that we had in class started out from the syllabus, but by the end, it became whatever we wanted to do. He is really laid back, and doesn't expect a whole much from anyone, unlike other design teachers I've had. The only drawback is that since there really wasn't any pressure for me to do a whole lot of work or to try at all on the assignments, I felt like I didn't really learn anything and really got anything out of the class. But, like I said, Curt is really chill, and learning in these design classes really just depends on you anyways, so take him if you want a kick back quarter. Just make sure you make the deadlines, or, if you forget about a project like me and turn it in two weeks late, make sure that you suck up a lot or make it look really pretty. Either way, it is not hard at all to get an A in his class.

I had Illingworth for both Arch 122 and Arch 123 (got a B+) when I was a freshman. Let me just say that I don't think most of the people that reviewed him really knew what they were talking about. While I thought it was really awesome that Illingworth didn't care what colors of Prismacolor pens and pencils we had, and that he said more than once "Don't worry, be crappy (except on the final)," these classes taught me mostly how to convince people that my work was good. Illingworth DOES talk in circles. For hours and hours. Somehow he still lets you go really early, every day, but the class feels insanely long because of all the time he spends saying the same things over and over again while you sit there wondering if there is anything you should be doing. He does pretty much take the syllabus and throw it out the window, which is also pretty cool, but the talking just kills the class. It's too bad, 'cause he really is a good guy. I'd say, take him anyway, but take your materials and do lots of work in class to pass the time while he talks.

Illingworth is pretty hilarious. He's also really laid back, I never stayed in class the entire 3 hours and I skipped classes regularly. As long as you do the work, you'll be fine. Also, try to befriend someone he already knows or likes. He tends to have a little bit of favoritism, and it shows. I had a lot of fun in his class.

Illingworth is a great guy. He doesn't try to hate on anyone unless you don't show up to lab. Sure his teaching techniques may seem a bit quirky and sometimes just irritating but you learn. He has his own vinyard and works out of his own office which brings experience and ideas that some professors just don't have. Curt is a very sensible professor. He doesn't require anything obsurd or unnecessary 99% of the time and doesn't even count late work late. Stay on top of things and improve your weekly drawings and you'll do fine. He's a good guy, don't let school get in the way of your education.

This guy wasn't very exciting but his class was pretty good. You always get out early, he explains all the projects pretty clearly and as long as you do the work you'll be fine.

Curt was awesome for 3rd year practice! He knows exactly what hes talking about, gives no uneccesary work, and will help you until you are completely confident with what you have done. He gives so much personal attention to student, but if you want a dry class that only talks about technical stuff dont take him.

Curt was awesome. His class really focused on the practical side of architecture, most might not find it excitiing but it's stuff more related to real architecture then what some professors make us do. Not to mentions it's a nice change of pace from the hectic schedule arch majors usually have:)

Seldom are we blessed with an experienced practicing architect and minister. With decades of practice, Curt\'s experience is a valuable resource for any student who seriously considers a career in architecture. That being said, you will have to push yourself in this class. Curt will not pressure you in the least. Instead, he is more of a mentor and will guide your design with his half-century of architectural experience. As a 3rd year architect student, you should be asking questions concerning the practicality of your project, if you don\'t your probably bullshlting anyway and deserve a bad grade. To the prlck calling Curt an asshole, I have never heard of Curt harshly critiquing a half-way decent project. That being said, you should reconsider your career choice you shlthead.

Although Curt is known for his laid-back style I have strangely found myself with two of my most favorite projects at Cal Poly both designed in his studio. Sometimes I would have liked a more intense studio but unlike other professors Curt doesn\'t make you do busy work in form of giant models and color prints worth hundreds of dollars so instead you end up working on developing your concept more than in some other classes. Curt also has his own practice so he is closer to practical than to super conceptual, which is nice. In his class you have more freedom in your program and direction you would like to take. With this said I would still advise in taking a variety of professors including those with insanely intense studios - you will come out a better designer (if you survive).

Illingworth is awesome. he is really laid back and understanding, and he helps you a lot, lets you go in any direction you want, and really knows what he's talking about. he doesnt give unneccesary work and is funny. if you want a really intense class with lots of drama and all-nighters, dont take him. but if you want a relaxed atmosphere and understand what you are doing, definately take him!

Curt repeats himself A LOT. If you have him for lecture + lab you will hear everything twice. His lectures cover a lot of material that I found helpful. You don't have to take written notes because he provides you with hand outs. He gives quizzes through out the qtr and there is a midterm and a non-cumulative final. His lab is basically taking packets of information and papers that he hands out and re-assembling them with your letter head on it. Pretty simple!
