Meyer is awesome. I thought i would not like this class but i did. made me evaluate and think about things i never gave a second thought to before. it is a lot of work, but it is possible to get an A. there is a paper, some group work, participation is important, a midterm, and a final. it requires effort, but she is really great!

This teacher is the most horrible teacher I have come across at Cal Poly. She is teaching about equality and how women should be treated the same to men, but she treats her students like shit. She is a self righteous bitch who will fail you if you do not believe in her beliefs. I have never had a teacher who disrespects her students as much as this woman. She should be fired for the way she treats her students. I thought this class would be interesting, but it ended up being another english class where you write at least 5 essays, given 3 different group projects to work on at the same time, and reading up to 100 pages in a book every night. I would not recommend this teacher.... at all.

Since the only other reviewer has clearly been sippin' on the hater-ade, I'll offer my two-cents on the course. I'm not a minor, but I really enjoyed it and found it fairly easy overall. Dr. Meyer is primarily with the Education department, and so she's very focused on providing a variety of class activities that fit different learning styles (free write, group discussion, exercises). There are 2 quizzes, a medium-length essay, an easy take home midterm (if you pay attention and pull a few citations) and some group projects that require an understanding of the material such that you could teach it to your peers. This was a breath of fresh air compared to the typical 3 midterms and a final snooze. The essay was tough, but I went to office hours and she was a big help. This class covers a wide area of topics, and the readings are important but you can skim them for discussion points and terms and do well. The only way you could get less than a C in this course is by simply not doing the reading/taking notes in class. Success requires a basic ability to look critically at the world and a willingness to check your privilege at the door and actually try. This is a D5 NOT an A1: it's upperdivision work. grow up.

Don't listen to comment 2. Dr. Meyer has an unrealistic requirements for a 10 week class. What comment two neglects to say is that you are expected to read around 700 pages of text, complete two quizzes on that text, write a 2400 word midterm, a 2400 word research paper, work on 2 group projects, and also complete a final. I have done less work in my upper division research based major classes. To sum up this class, when asked if white people in Haiwii were considered oppressed by Haiwiian people who hate whites bc of the whole America take over thing and go to the lengths of beating up white people and so on... She said no because they chose to live there. Don't take this class

Reviewer 3 was probably one of the white sorority chicks who spent the whole lecture texting. Yes there are a lot of readings, no they are not all necessary. You can skim for the same level of comprehension. I read maybe half of the course readings, and then took notes in class, looked for the terms and concepts she emphasized and did fine. The research paper was a bit of a pain, and I didn't really enjoy the amount of group work. All of this was fairly standard for an upper division liberal arts course. Also LOL at thinking white people are oppressed because native Hawaiians don't like them. :'( :'( :'( LOL what broader social context? Western media whaaat? Institutional oppression is a thing? Sounds like the problems you had were based on your own biases and failure to understand the course concepts, and not on Dr Meyer. Although she clearly had faves. That's the one problem I had with her.

Dr. Meyer is one of the most passionate teachers I've had at Cal Poly. I am a minor in WGS so this class was required for me. There is an extensive amount of reading - that comes with the field of WGS. Dr. Meyer, who has an education background, provides the class with several non normative things to do during class which were reminiscent of elementary school. I enjoyed that. To clarify, she did not treat students like elementary students, just used teaching tools that often aren't seen in college classrooms. If you are passionate about WGS I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Meyer. This class is difficult, but the growth you experience is worth it.

So she's really enthusiastic but she's a harsh grader. She assigns a lot of reading and relatively few assignments so a lot of the grade is pretty subjective class participation. She will not give you much leeway on written exams if it doesn't line up exactly with what she wants. She doesn't tolerate proximal knowledge, if you don't know the exact meanings of things you won't get any points. If you go past her two free absences she doesn't really care if you have a note or not, so if you're someone who gets sick a lot she might not be great. She also has a lot of group work and very few lectures so you are responsible for the information, much of which can be difficult to understand at first. The subject was interesting but the way she treated the grading made me sort of dread that class. She cares, but she won't go easy on you if you're not doing well. I have a bad taste in my mouth from that class, but I can see that she's really trying to make people learn.
