I was beyond scared to take Organic Chemistry, even if it was just survey. It was Dr. Pettus' first quarter at Cal Poly so I really didn't know what to expect or if I should just drop him and get a surefire professor the next quarter. Not dropping his class turned out to be the best decision I ever made. He makes the material so understandable and helps out everyone on an individual basis. He knows how to answer just about every question from just about every angle. He gives you a test overview before each exam, his labs are actually really enjoyable, and he's a freaking awesome guy! Don't be afraid to take him because you WILL have fun and you WILL succeed. Also, he brought donuts to the final. What a great guy.

Professor Pettus is an interesting teacher. Although he is a nice person deep down, he comes across as rude and blunt and is extremely unwilling to take the time to answer questions-he makes you feel incompetent for simply asking a question-thats what learning is about! Although he means well, his persona is not ideal for a teacher-especially in a lab setting where questions are mandatory to learning.
