Hutch is one of the worst teachers I have ever taken. First of all he dresses like a deadhead, but more importantly he CAN NOT TEACH!!! He made my lab partner drop out of the CSC major. He likes to make dumb jokes and comments and trys to pass that off as teaching. He also will not help you in lab. If you ask him a question he'll give you his usual condesending look of stupidity. If you want an easy 'A' hell give it to you, but if you plan on going anywhere past cpe 101 FORGET IT!!! Copying his error filled code does not prepare you for 102. My opinon is to not take this guy unless you like to talk to dirty old men left over from the sixties.

Hutch seems to know about programming, but doesn't have much enthusiasm towards teaching Java. He has a cynical personality which can lead to some funny jokes but put a drain on the class. Hutch covers the material well, but he is guilty of not challenging his students. The labs and quizzes he gives don't require enough problem solving to be effective. Hutch will introduce you to all the subject matter that you need to know about, but will not reinforce it with adequate programming assignments. If you need to take the next class in the series, you will probably find your next teacher much more demanding. Hutch is a good choice for C or Fortran, since he actually likes those languages and isn't required to prepare students for another class taught by the rest of the CPE/CSC faculty (which he is not too fond of). He should be avoided, however, for CPE 101/102.

i felt that the instructore didn't really know his stuff. he would often stare aimlessly at the chalk board and pause for a long time. This made the class uninteresting (cause he did it so often). He really doesn't know how to help out students. Once we had a hard project to do and the lab was filled with people the day it was due, and he just stormed out of class and went to his office hours. Very unwilling to help students, and has a big temper. throughout the whole quarter, he had written the code for us and all we had to do was compile it. but come the 8th week, he no longer provided the code and all of a sudden, we had to write it ourselves, he didn't prepare us for it at all.

"Hutch" is not incredibly inspiring. His cynicism can be funny but can also get old fast. Grades are based on 60% Lecture (5 EZ Quizzes, an EZ Midterm, and an EZ Final) and 40% Lab (9 Programming Assignments, a Lab Project, and a Lab Final -- ALL EZ) The class is incredibly easy, so if that is what you want, take it if you can stand the cynicism. If you want a challenging class you will actually learn from, with a teacher who can help you, take another.

Hes an decent professor, nothing more, nothing less. Hes a nice guy, and he does make you work for your A (not your B, C, or D), but hes a little difficult to get help from in class. If you are patient, or if you approach him in the lab, he'll be more willing to help you out.

I cannot believe all the commments above!! I am taking him right now, and frankly, he is one of the best teachers I have ever had. Last quarter I took this class with another teacher, who was good too, but I did not understand the material at all. Well, I decided to re-take the class with Hutch and I am so glad I did. He teaches in a language that I can understand and is giving me the confidence that I need to continue as a MIS major. I also think he is funny and if you listen to his jokes, csc is not as dry as it can be.

I came into this class knowing nothing about programming. I really wanted to get an A. So the second week I went in asking for help becuase I was completely lost. Big mistake. The biggest thing against Hutch is that he doesn't like to help. He has very little patience. But from what I hear about the other CSC instructors he is one of the better ones. But you wont learn as much as you should, so you should take someone else for your own sake. But he is sort of funny, well actually just cynical, so I guess in a way that equals humor. But overall I think he is just average and I wish I had an instructor who taught me what I needed to know for csc 102.

I still haven't taken the final yet so I don't know what my grade will be after that but I've learned nothing from Hutchenreuther the quater. The reason I have an A is because he basically tells you what's on his quizes and and midterm and writes out all the labs for you so that you only have to compile them... oh! He also makes you change the name in the header to your name instead of Jane Smith. Don't try to have him explain anything to you either. I once asked him if he could explain what was actually going on in one of his programs that we had to compile and he tells me that there's no time for that and that I don't need to know it. Don't bother to ask him anything because the reason he doesnt' teach anything is because he doesnt' know how to teach anything and he won't even try... he'll just tell you it's in the book or yell at you because he's said it once before amongst all the other jumble that you're trying to understand. He won't repeat anything even if it's really simple. If you already understand programming (you don't have to know the language, just understand it), and need to bring your GPA up, I would totally go for this class but not if you actually want to be learning things for later courses. I already know that the begining of 102 will be near hell for me.

Hutch is a very smart man, but doesn't know how to communicate his knowledge. His lectures are somewhat decent, but his lab assignments are the worst. For his lab assignments, if you can read directions, then you'll do wonderful on them. Basically, he gives you the program with a few lines to fix. The worst thing is that he tells you which lines to fix. By doing that, you gain absolutely nothing from him. If you seriously want to learn JAVA, I do not suggest taking this teacher. He's a funny guy, but in the long run, you won't be laughing.

Hutch isn't a good CSC teacher but he isn't a bad one either. The lectures are BORING, you might as well just read them online and just show up for quizzes and labs. Speaking of the labs, the entire course required that you just edit his source code. His questions on the midterm are sometimes confusing and hard to understand. All of the CSC 101 teachers decided to write a common final so if you've got Hutch, chances are you're going to run into something you didn't learn. If you're required to take just one CSC course and you've got skills in copy and pasting chances are you'll walk away with a good grade. CSC/CPE majors, avoid Hutch/Hulk Hogan.

If you want a relatively easy class and not learn anything vital for csc 102, this is the professor for you. Hutch has very little patience and willingness to help students. Especially struggling ones. He vaguely covers the important topics of 101, and his labs test the student's ability to cut and paste rather than actually code. If you have a good understanding of programming concepts and are a quick learner Hutch may be okay for you..but if this is your first programming class, it's likely that you'll get screwed. Oh by the way, if you do take Hutch, and you're curious to see what the other 101 sections are like, you'll eventually find out when you take the common final, and have to solve problems that you've never seen before.

I do not recommend this teacher AT ALL, especially if you are taking him for csc 101. First of all, he has no patience. I would ask questions in class and he would look at me like I was stupid. He literally divides the class into people who know computers and those who do not. My lab partner finally gave up asking questions in class because of his crude responses and looks. And it is not just me. The whole class hated him. Everyone was constantly complaining about his teaching and his impatience. Also he just gives the source code for your assigments and all you have to do it copy it. Then, all of a sudden in week 7, he stops giving the source code in the beginning and waits a few days before giving it out. Copying changes to your source code does not help you learn Java. Doing Java helps you learn Java. I was so surprised when I saw what my other friends were doing in their other csc101 classes. They were doing it all theirselves and were learning it and understanding it. That is also another thing. You might be able to do the source coding, but you won't understand why you are doing the things you are doing in your program. I also had the chance to attend another csc101 class with a different teacher and I was amazed at what they were learning compared to us. I have been told that he also does not prepare you for csc 102.

Take this guy only if you know a lot about programming before hand. This is because he basically doesnt know how to teach. He gives you all the code to your labs and programming assignments and all you have to do is cut in paste and write your name at the top. I got pretty good at that. I went into his final with an A, and came out with a C- until he changed the grade (due to some error, yeah rite) to a B. Regarding the final, I aced his part and didnt know shit for the common part of the final, which tests basic CSC 101 knowledge. People in other classes told me that the common part was much easier than the final given by their own teacher. enough said. DO NOT TAKE HUTCH.

Hutch wasnt that great of a teacher but he definitely wasnt bad. people who rip on him are just those lazy punks that read his lab and his source code and are satisfied with the prof doing all the work. he gives you the lab assignment with his source code for the lab so that you can look at it if you get stuck. youre not supposed to copy it directly, morons. if more students spent more of their time actually trying to learn the shit instead of having someone else do it, then maybe less profs would get undue bad reviews and students like myself dont have to be so goddamn worried when we end up with a teacher that got a shitty review from a lazy prick.

If you want to learn anything do NOT take Hutch. Granted he was an easy A and the guy was funny, but when I got to 103, I had another thing coming. I was so lost and felt like I was in Gibberish 101. He does not make you understand anything. He makes the lab exercises so incredibly difficult that there is NO possibly way you could do them without his assistance. Therfore he ends up giving you most of the code. I think he needs to reconsider his current form of teaching.

I took Hutch's CSC-101 class last quarter, and understood the material pretty well, so I decided to take him for CSC-102. That was a mistake. He was extremely unorganized and was not helpful during labs. Additionally, I was not prepared for either the midterm or the final by attending his lectures. The labs range from extremely easy (adding a header to his source file) to very difficult. To earn a high grade in this class you probably need extensive previous knowledge of C++.

I had this guy for CSC-101 as well, and the only reason I took him for 102 is because I had last priority and his was the only one that opened up for me. Let me just say this: the only reason I got a B+ in the class is because the guy didn't know how to write a test. These were the most vaguely written things I've ever seen. That alone makes him worthy of the well below average rating. Oh, and the labs, you get to edit his code...sometimes two words is all you need to change for the whole week. It's like he wants to show you that he can program! Isn't that amazing? A c++ teacher that can program in c++?! Believe me, if you have another choice, don't make him it.

I left the class feeling like i had excelled and really learned everything that I was supposed to. However, due to the midterm and the final, i walked away with a B. Hutch does not know how to write a test. The weekly quizzes weren't very tough, but the two tests were horrible. The labs were ridiculous. It tested your ability to write headers. That was 99% of each lab. You had to change a word here or there, but the rest was adding a header that tried to describe what his program was doing. I would not recommend Hutch as a professor.

I just finished CSC 103 with Dr. Myers, and after taking Hutch for csc 102, i can fairly say that Hutch poorly prepared me. He learned the material as we learned it; when a question was asked, he stared blankly at the board for about 30 seconds, then he either bs'd an answer or told you "it's in the book". Like everyone has said, his labs are ridiculous, i didn't learn anything from them. His tests are very confusing and vague, his quizzes are so-so. He does not properly prepare you to move to the next course. He's an easy B or A, but if you plan on going higher in programming courses, take someone else like myers or hitchner.

Nice guy, but seemed like he didn't know what he was teaching. Lectures would be him reading word for word from his slides and not explaining what he just read. When questions on lecture or homework came up 25% of the time he could answer it, an other 50% of the time he could answer it only if he knew what the answer was, and the other 25% he couldn't answer the question even though it was based on or was a homework problem. Seems like he knows how to program though... but this wasn't a programming class.

This has got the be the worst teacher I've ever had in my life. First off, all his lectures are based on what he must have concocted in 30 minutes - 3 years ago. They are ALL straight out of the book. Also, not only is it straight out of the book, he reads it WORD FOR WORD. He doesn't even explain what he reads. He literally goes over a section in 5 minutes. Another thing about him, he is easily irritated. He threatens to kick you out of the class for the day if you make noise or talk while he's lecturing (sometimes even before he starts lecturing). As for the homework (I'm still wondering how he got the job...), he doesn't seem to know what he's doing. Part of the time, he seems like he knows what he's doing (but that's usually on the easier problems). Another part of the time, he has the answer book, so he just writes the answer on the board and doesn't even bother going over it. And the rest of the time, he asks if anyone in the class can do it. If someone was able to do it, he just stands there and let the class argue/discuss if it was correct or not (he doesn't say if it was correct or incorrect if no one asks if it was correct or not). If no one did it, or knows how to do it, he implies that it's our fault that we didn't read the book or for whatever other reason. After he finishes his little lecture on us, he moves on to the next subject and doesn't even answer the question. Another thing about him is that he's making us learn ISETL, which none of the other teachers are even teaching (Putnam and Brady). It wouldn't be too difficult, except he assigns problems that aren't even possible to do on ISETL. I suggest you take Putnam or Brady for CSC141. I'm already stuck in this class, so I'm trying my best to learn as much as I can myself.

Here's a couple of the best quotes from my one quarter of experience with this character. "You guys are a bunch of fucking lazy people." A student asked him, "If we were asked this question on the final, what would the correct answer be?" His response, "We'll see! Let's move on." A student asked him a question from homework and his response, "Homework is for HOME!" This guy doesn't show any sympathy for people that don't give him exactly what he wants. He wants students that sit there silently, understand everything and do not illustrate that he knows nothing about the subject. If you ask him something he doesn't know the answer to (which happens often), he asks if anyone else in the room would like to answer this. Then if it's a problem in the book he'll just write the answer from the solutions manuel on the board. That's enough of an explaination for him. Pros: - it's comical how irritable and crappy he is, you'll laugh behind his back. Cons: - he's crappy.

Hutch is a lazy SOB. He told us that he thinks short answer questions are good for judging what you've learned but he doesn't like grading them so we didn't have any on our final. His lectures consist of him reading word for word slides that he probably wrote 8 years ago. If you ask him a question he has to go back and re-read his slides so he actually knows what's going on. His grading is not standard at all and he refused to give me full credit because i reduced 2! to 2. I would rather wait a quarter to take a class than ever take him again.

I've never thought I could have this type of feeling about someone, but after taking CSC-141 I feel extreme anger and upmost hatred towards one man. After he said "Fuck You" to my face along with another student in my class and referred to our class as "The laziest bunch of motherfuckers he's ever been associated with teaching," it took all self-restraint and willpower not to yank off his abonoxoiusly ugly goattee-mustache and overgrown hair. Let's move on to his teaching... He walks into class everyday extraordinary loud hawaiin shirt with his blubber oozing out trying to escape and his can of Diet Coke. Turns on his PowerPoint slides he must have made about 10 years ago(copied directly out of the book), stares at it for 20 minutes(I'm not kidding, he will stay silent, thinking for minutes at a time, trying to think of what to say next), then reads directly from the slide itself(like we couldn't do it ourselves). If you ask him a question, he will either do one of two things: Look for his Teachers' Manual or say, "They best answer a teacher can give is a student exercise where they come up with the answer on their own." Which means he doesn't know the answer. He has scolded the class because we asked him questions on the homework to which he replied, "HOMEWORK IS FOR HOME! THAT'S THE POINT OF IT! GOD DAMN, I DIDN'T EVEN WANT TO TEACH THIS CLASS ANYWAYS!" He thinks because he's so versatile, they assign him to CSC-141 because other teacher's don't know about the subject. Bullshit. He assigns weekly homework which is either overloaded with busywork and he is extremely picky with it. I think the students in the classes he teaches feel dumber after completing the course. It is impossible to stay attentive and has brought a new meaning to the word boring. I found myself counting the dots on the ceiling and watching the second hand move on the clock. His tests are so controversial. His questions are so vague that if you understand the concept, but do it a different way, he won't even discuss with you about a possible regrade. He doesn't care about teaching. He goes through the motions, shows up only two days a week for teaching, and has absolutely no passion for his work. The grade I give for him? He is the worst teacher I have ever had, I award him no points and may god have mercy on his soul.

cpe 169 class is a not so bad class. As long as you show up everyday to class and turn in all the assignments you should be fine. However, if you're having difficulty with the lab Hutch is not very helpful. He just stares at it for a while and doesn't fix the problem. Most of the time he hasn't even read or done the lab himself. I don't know why he went into teaching if he doesn't want to teach. Although he jokes a lot he had a quick temper. "Hutch" was probably the worst professor I've had at Cal Poly. His lectures consisted of powerpoint slides (which he read verbatim). I took notes as fast as I could, but I would frequently miss the information on the slides since he goes through them lightning fast. This is just one example of why I think he doesn't care about his students. The slides contain good information, but Hutch is not the one that should be presenting it. The subject material in this course included CUSP, MIPS, Intel, and Motorola architectures. The language we used most was CUSP. You learn all the fundamental concepts of assembly language in CUSP. Then, you start to delve into other languages (but only as shallow as the first topics that you covered in CUSP). Although, I do think that we learned more in Hutch's class than in the other sections (Hsu). I heard Hsu only covered Intel. Hutch's goal was to cover one easy programming language in depth and overview many others. The lectures are also available online, if and when you get left behind in lecture. Sometimes, he just takes lectures/exams from his colleagues. So, obviously, he's not going to understand it since it appears as if he knows nothing. He will try to answer your questions if it's in class. But don't go to office hours or meet him outside of class, you'll probably leave crying from utter disappointment. You can only have 2 results when asking Hutch a question: 1) He ends up yelling at you, telling you to read the book (even though I read and highlighted every chapter) or 2) He tries to figure your problem out for 30 minutes and then sagaciously answers, "I don't know." Way to go, Hutch. ;) We really didn't have homework except for the labs (which took many hours outside of class). The tests were straightforward, and he typically tells you what to study for. So, in this regard, he was a good professor. Oh yea, and he tries to inject some humor and interest in his class by showing you flash animations, videos of missiles (from his days in the military), wine making strategies, clips from his favorite movie (Spinal Tap), and other random deviations that really don't enhance his lectures at all. He tries too hard to be funny, I think. He's got a strange sense of humor that I just don't pick up on. If you come out of lecture feeling stupider, then you know why. ;) There was a lot of work outside of class, and if you have a question, look it up on the internet or a book. Hutch won't be able to answer your questions. You're pretty much on your own in this class. Fortunately, I had a good lab partner, so we figured out many of the concepts with each other. So, the bottom line is, I wouldn't want to take this professor again. If you have an option to take another professor like Boche or even Hsu, take that professor. I've never had either, but I can't imagine that they'd be any worse than Hutch.

To rate the class, it's pretty easy if you just read the required text and do the labs, and he is pretty easy on grading labs. As for taking midterms and the final, he is a total dick when it comes to answering questions about the problems. He screws up on parts of the tests, and instead of clarifying it for the class he just basically blows you off. This guy seems like he hates life, and spends half the class telling you about websites that sell Darwin doormats and no preaching signs for your front door. The only thing cool about this class was the fact that we never had to stay for lab. I'm sure that's because he hates teaching more than we hate going to listen to his sorry excuses for lectures, but whatever.

If you're reading these evals, don't pay attention to the ones that praise him. THey are complete and utter BULLSHIT. He does not teach at all. He reads his damn power point slides word for word and goes through them lightning fast. He puts them on his webpage, but then whats the fucking point of going to class. He certainly doesn't like helping his students. I've seen him shoot down people with bitter denials towards them wanting help. THis kid asked him for some direction on a lab and he said," I talked about it in lecture, I'm not going to make a custom lecture just for you." What the fuck is that? It was something he could've clarified in two or three sentences. He gets irritable too. If you ask him the wrong question he'll just not acknowledge your presence. My grade in the class is a direct evaluation of how well I taught myself. And I could only do so much with no prior experience in comp arch. Everything I learned about CUSP was from myself and my lab partners, and this was with a loaded schedule. THe grading doesn't make any sense either. THere were people with grades in the teens (out of 50)on the midterms and getting passing grades. It's disgusting to watch such a misfit of the comp sci faculty attempt to pass off this mickey mouse shit as a genuine form of teaching. He doesn't want to be there and he makes no effort to hide it. The comp eng dept should acknowledge his desire to be elsewhere and fire him, no doubt.

I basically think this is the worst teacher I've ever had, period. If you read through the rest of these evaluations you'll know why, so I won't repeat the usual complaints. Instead, I'll tell you of two crazy things Hutch did in 215. First, in the middle of class Hutch showed us all a cartoon of Bigfoot sticking his weiner into a garbage disposal. I kid you not. Another thing that just pissed me off was that, for one of the midterms, Hutch told us not to study anything about reading data from tape reels because it wouln't be on the test. But of course, when I got the midterm, what do you know, we had to write a program for reading from tape reels. Here's what makes it REALLY bad: Hutch uses the same god damn tests every quarter! I saw a two-year old test and it was exactly the same. Gee Hutch, thanks for lying about the test since you obviously KNEW there would be a question about tape reels. This guy puts zero effort into his class, so beware.

i was thinking about taking this guy since no other teacher was going to teach this CSC class. but, after looking at this guy's track record, the avg gpa is 0.94! excuse me, but i actually want to graduate. i didn't say that i wanted a teacher who could potentially rip me a new hole.

Professor Hutch is the rudest teacher I have ever had. He would yell at kids to shut up all the time, he always complains about people whining about their scores, and he yelled at this one kid once for trying to get his midterm off of the corner table at the start of class instead of at the end. The class was ok, basically just old power point slides that haven't been updated for a while, and homework assignmens that were from a previous quarter so all the due dates were wrong. I didn't find the class hard, and we didn't have to go to the lab which was really cool, plus I was in a group consiting of me and three girls, so I kind of liked that class. Outside of class Hutch seems like a cool guy, he really likes wine and has a pretty funny sense of humor, although it is a bit dry at times.

Hutch is actually a pretty cool guy that knows his stuff. The class is pretty basic. Copy the homeworks from the handout that he makes you buy and fake the projects and 1/4th of the work is done. The rest is quizzes, tests and the final project. Quizzes are cake as he goes over exactly what is going to be on it 2 min. before the actual quizz. For tests, he takes the class the day before the test and goes over what is going to be on it. The final project, well, you coulc be crazy like me and make your own project or you can just copy one of the later homeworks. Sounds pretty easy? Well it is. I had no idea what programing was when I went in and I still got an A.

Well I had this professor for CSC 231 and for someone who had to take this course as a support course I thank god that this is the only CSC course I have to take in my major. This guy totally made everything out of this world, and at times he would go off on so many tangents. But you know he cusses a lot and that's a cool thing I guess. We had a couple of quizzes, two midterms and no final. Quizzes were pretty straightforward because he would give you like a review of what was going to be on the quiz before the quiz, so you have to be stupid not to pass the quiz. The midterms though were another thing. You get to have a page of notes, front and back, but you don't know if it's going to help or not. Homework and projects were really cool cause it was mosty copy and paste out of his workbook. Overall this teacher is alright but if you really want to learn something don't take this teacher. I just had him this quarter and now that the class is over I don't remember one thing we actually learned in class.

Not a nice guy. He laughs at students having difficulty, and spends half the hour complaining about stupid people he has had in previous classes. He doesn't really teach, either. He seems to know the material somewhat well, but covers all of his inconsistencies with mean jokes. Try to get someone else to teach you programming.

This guy is a joke fortran has to be the oldest and easiest form of programing ever and this guy makes it so hard to understand. He will not tell you anything pertanent in class he just expects you to read his book that has no page numbers or any sort of order to learn about assignments that are due and projects you need to complete. He gives about 9 quizes and goes through a short briefing right before it so you would have to be a retard not to get atleast 8 out of ten. His tests are a little difficult study the programs that you write and you will do fine. I just did not do well on the finnal because I thought this stuff was way to easy and did not study. If you have a choise to take someone else DO IT. If not he is not the worst that you could have.

Ahh, Fortran... a useless class about an obsolete language fulfilling a useless portion of the ME major. The only motivation you could possibly have for putting forth effort in this class is to bolster your GPA. While Hutch lectures, he goes into a recitation mode for his archaic powerpoint slides, going over everything word for word, but only explaining things with a few concise additional words. I gave up the taxing job of attempting to follow along, and participated in Solitaire-beating contests with another helpless student (my record stands at winning 6 games in a one-hour time period). I guess his sarcastic sense of humour is a bit of a plus, however.

I took Hutch for CSC 231. The class was easy. The homework was almost done completely for you in the lab manual. The quizzes were simple 'fill in the blanks'. The mid-term and final weren't much harder than the quizzes. I already had a little programming background so this introductory class was cake. Even with no previous knowledge the class wouldn't be very hard. Hutch is a funny guy. You'll like him.

such a lame class. but hutch tries to be entertaining, lots of tales from the good old days at Tech. If you were planning on getting anything out of the lectures think again, he kind of plods through them and doesn't leave overheads up long enough to even cognize them. An easy class still, you're not gonna learn a whole lot unless you're real motivated. Don't bother to buy the book, his "hints" are all you need, the book is an unnecessary expenditure.

Hutch is awesome. I was scared to take his class after reading his ratings, but it was a breeze. He gives 5 quizzes, but right before he hands them out he practically writes all the answers on the white board. He gives basically two midterms, the second one is the final. He is very picky grading these, but he lets you have a full page of notes (front and back) with whatever you want on it. He also posts practice questions with solutions for the midterms on his website (which you could print out and take for your notes). The programs are really easy to write at first, you just have to type in exactly what he has in his notesbook. Toward the end you actually have to figure out how to write certain parts, but never a complete program. There are also projects that mimic the hw so you get practice. For example, a hw assignment was a program converting Fahrenheit to Celsius, and my program was converting Inches to Centimeters. You really only have to change a couple lines of code. Besides being an easy class, Hutch is awesome! He's always telling funny stories or jokes. I had never had any kind of an introduction to programming before, and I got an A.

Hutch is awesome. The programming is easy if you do the homework and follow his lab book, its pretty much copy paste. Even though he has you do assignments on your own, you get to choose them and they are really easy if you choose well. He is also pretty good at helping people in class (231 has a lecture/lab so we got to program in class). Just dont talk when he is talking, do the homework and youll do just fine.

He is a really funny guy, but one horrible teacher. He lectures for one hour, then leaves while you are stuck alone by yourself to figure how do write a program that you know nothing about. The class is super easy because you copy out of the book, but there is a time when you have to do your own writing, and then you are screwed. On the midterm and the final, just go to his powerpoint notes on the internet and copy/paste them into a word document and you will do great on the tests. If you have a choice, don't take him. Nice guy, bad teacher.

There is no doubt Hutch is a smart guy, but his teaching abilities and enthusiasm is another thing entirely. But there is lots of hope, since you don't have to do much to get an A, or even pass. Nearly all the assignments are copied directly from his "handouts" you are required to buy. There were a few glitches in Hutch's programs, but he managed to figure them out and tell us in time. I am terrible at programming, but I had some previous programming experience from high school that helped. Having prioir programming experience is not necessary to understand programming, since you are either a natural at it or not. But overall, Hutch is easy going as long as you don't talk when he's talking. Perhaps the only reason you could fail this course is if you really wanted to. Oh, and don't buy the textbook. It's a terrible textbook and you won't use it at all.

I was kind of surprised at some of the not-so-good reviews on this guy, I thought overall he was a good teacher. And trust me on this one, I'm definitely not your stereotypical overachiever that gives good reviews to the teacher everyone hates. He made a class that I thought would be ridiculously boring pretty fun, and I actually learned a good deal (for having zero programming experience.) I understood his lectures well, and if you have trouble he'll have no problem helping you out. You don't need the textbook; anything you need will either be in his notes/handouts booklet that's like $8 or just in the Matlab help files.

Hutch's class is pretty straight forward. The first half of the class is a typing excersise, and the second half gets marginally tougher, but nothing too hard. Follow directions and you'll do fine on the homeworks, projects, and quizzes. Don't expect him to be much help though. He is exceedingly grumply and foul-tempered. Basically, he is a dick.

I already had programming experience coming into the class, and it was an absolute cakewalk. However, others who did not have experience with programming did not seem to be struggling too much. The first two-thirds of the class is merely copying straight (and I mean 100% straight) out of his course manual. The midterm and final were just ridiculously easy as they only asked the most basic questions, not to mention he tells you all the types of questions that will be on them. As long as you can type, there is absolutely no reason not to get an A in this class. Side note: DO NOT buy the book. I didn't buy it, and I've heard from everyone who did that they regret it because it is useless. His $10 course manual will be more than adequate for you to do well and learn the material.

Hutch is a very grumpy sometimes funny old guy. He comes in with a Hawaiian shirt and no shoes. You use a manual that he wrote that makes everything very easy in the beginning but then as the class goes on you realize you didn't learn any of the basics and now you're in trouble. Powerpoints are too fast and pretty much useless. If you've never done any computer classes before (like me) this class isn't so easy. Hutch will not help you out much at all. Best bet is to take the class with a friend or partner up with somebody else who knows what they are doing.

If you can you should really try to avoid taking a class with hutch. He is funny sometimes durging the lectures and the class is relatively easy but he is truly one of the worst professors i have had here. He gets mad at you for not taking notes when its literally impossible to take notes because he goes through the lectures way too quickly and he doesnt explain anything. You basically have to teach yourself. Then if you have to ask him a question he freaks out and makes you feel like an idiot. The weekly emails he sends out bashing on students that explain that we did something stupid arent exactly pleasant either. I would never reccommend taking a class with hutch.

Hutch is a grouchy old man who hates life. On a good day he will rush through lecture and swears at the students once or twice, a bad day he can kick people out, leaves class himself, and basically belittles everyone in the room. Like other people have said he does not teach. Towards the end of the quarter you don\'t want to ask a question in fear of getting yelled at or kicked out. The easiest way to get through the class is to make a smart friend or find someone who took the class before so when you have to start writing your own programs (which he doesn\'t help you with) you have something to guide you. The midterm and final is easy if you copy his review slides onto your cheatsheet he allows. This class is horrible, but not hard. On another note if you really explore Hutch\'s homepage you will see how strange he is, from the picture of him in an energizer bunny suit to links to porn sites under you should be studying but... This guy is just an pain. He is the only one who teaches the class though so pick a computer where he can\'t see what you are doing as he lectures and kill time by getting ahead in class or go one facebook. This man should not be allowed out of his house, much less allowed to teach people anything. He is a mean, bitter old bastard that should be forcefully retired. He has a major need to be superior and will do anything to make sure that your answer to a question is wrong. If you are forced to have him as a teacher STAY OUT OF HIS WAY. Sit in the back, remain silent at all times, do not let him know your name and don’t make eye contact. Not to mention he's like the most boring lecturer ever, so having him at 8am wasn't fun. That being said, the class is really easy. You just copy out of the handouts until halfway through the quarter (then he just expects you to know what you're doing and write your own code). It's not that bad though once you figure it out. O.K. as you are going to read all through here "Hutch" has a tough time explaining computer programming. He DOES go through his lectures extremely fast with power point, however you can go to his homepage and download the power point presentation and have it for yourself. My next problem with power point presentations is they don't tell you how to write a program. They give a good outline, but when it comes down to little stuff to make it work, you just cannot find it. I bought the book for something like $70 and cracked it once (the honest truth) but found it to be of no value. The book explains programs in a totally different fashion then "Hutch" does. Another problem I had was personal one-on-one help. I went to his a couple times to get some help, and was quickly shut down. I seriously think his favorite thing to say is: "I don't know!" He comes off as a funny guy when class is in session, he rants about the maintanance of the classroom, makes fun of stupid things and is generally funny, but once your talking to him by yourself he's an ass. Like several others have said the only reason they got a reasonable grade was b/c they have taken a comp sci class before. This is the case with me also. I knew what I was doing from taking a JAVA class before (essentioally the same language), and therefore did alright. Just messed up on some tests. If you know what your doing, the class is easy, and his test are easy, but if your a first time learner for comp sci, then for god saked, don't put yourslef through this madness.

I don't know what the big deal is. I had never had a computer programming class before his and had no problem getting an A. The class is set up like this: 5 quizzes, 1 midterm, and weekly projects, in addition to a cumulative final and final project. For the midterm and final you get 1 page front and back of notes. If that doesn't make it easy enough, before the quizzes, midterm and final, he has his 'short attention span theatre' in which he pretty much tells you exactly what needs to be on the quiz, and gives you a lecture the day before for the midterm and final w/ examples of what to expect. These lectures make great note sheets. The projects and hw are straight forward, he will show you what is wrong if you need help. The final project has to be 100 lines of code, either 1 program or multiple programs adding up to 100 lines. You can even just take programs from the book (which is otherwise useless) and copy those and run them. This class is easy, and 'Hutch' sets it up so that it is nearly impossible to fail, and extremely easy to ace.

The homework assignments he give you are very straightforward in the beginning of the class and in the end become a little more complex. Definetly nothing that is too big of a deal. He gives 5 quizzes throughout the quarter but if you attend all the lectures you should have no problem acing everyone of them. He has a midterm and a final exam and posts a sample of each online. The sample is very similiar the actual exam and gives you a good idea of what the test is going to look like. I would recommend Hutch for this class, if you want to learn a little programming and still get a pretty easy A.

Hutch is actually a pretty easy going guy, but this class is hard because programming assignments are done at home, not in a lab. Otherwise this class isn't too hard because all of the homework comes straight out of his lecture notes, you really don't even need to buy the textbook.

I was very concerned about taking hutch after reading the comments on this web site. But from the first day of class, I liked him. I had the opportunity to switch into a different section, but I opted out and stuck with hutch. The class was easy. I'll just say that now. Granted I've had lots of computer experience, but very minimal programming experience. The lectures were easy to follow, and the text was very useful. I never went to his office hours. The class definitely requires computing proficiency, and hutch says that the first day. I think he does assume people know about some more advanced topics though. Bottom line: He's a good guy. He's a fair guy. The class isn't that hard. Do the work and turn it in on time and you'll be fine.

Hutch is not that bad. I dreaded this class because I knew nothing about computer programming and I ended up having a good time. His lectures can get a little boring, but he posts all the powerpoints online, so you can go back and look at them later for clarification. He helps walk you through the programming, which makes it feel like you aren't learning anything, but really you are. He gives weekly quizzes, with a short review session before each one (pay attention to the review, it usually includes some answers), and there is one midterm & a final (you get a crib sheet for both). The final was fairly difficult and the programming took a good bit of time, but overall it was a fine class.

I really wish I'd gotten on Polyratings before I took this class. He's perfectly awful. He doesn't teach anything whatsoever. I copied every homework assignment out of the "hutch's hints" bullshit that we had to buy. You copy it, tweak it a little, and turn it in. And then go to lecture only to leave it feeling like you'd had a full frontal lobotomy. Hey Hutch... STFU.

Hutch is funny, he is a cool guy, he is a fair grader, he lets you out of class early but Hutch is a bad teacher. He goes over slides on powerpoint in class then puts them on his website so you can look at them later. This is a teach yourself class, he gives you a book, you do one assignment each week (most assignments are already 90% done in the book) and you come to class and listen to him lecture(not teach). Hutch makes this class nearly impossible to fail, do the assignments and you'll be fine. Quizzes are easy because he tells you whats going to be on them and then reviews for them 5 minutes before he gives them. the midterm and final were a little bit harder but nothing too bad. keep in mind you are always going to have asshats in your class who took a lot of computer science in high school, try to block them out, they like to flatter themselves and confuse the rest of the class. if you are having problems with your code go to a yahoo chat room and people will help you, its way better than e-mailing him cuz he doesn't write back. take his class if you want to pass not if you want to learn.

This guy sucks at teaching, all you do is look at a power point having no idea what it means and he starts talking to you like you already know how to program. I found myself just copying his lab manual and depending on a freind on like every assignment. Take the other csc 234 teacher, she can actually teach, plus she's easier to get an A in.

I took this course considering switching my major based on my experience. I have a bit of prior programming knowledge, and I expected Hutchenreuther to foster that. Instead, he clings dearly to his "by the book mentality", fills class with useless stories about how he used to have to do things, and won't help you with anything "beyond your ability". His favorite acronym is KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid), which he references if you ask a question that requires more than a thirty second explanation. Basically, he's an ex-programmer who doesn't understand how to teach. He uses powerpoint for lectures.... hoping that somehow you'll understand the code he's written. He gets confused often, and has to backtrack, causing endless headaches for the students. Overall, while he may be intelligent and all that jazz, Huthcenreuther is no more fit to teach this class than I am.

The only good thing about this class is that you can get an A without putting much effort in. The assignments are essentially done for you in the course book and all you really need to do is copy it and make a few changes. Tests are also super-easy given that you do not completely slack off as he tells you exactly what is on the test. This teacher is absolutely horrible to learn from. He really does not put much energy into teaching and will never really answer your questions.

I had Hutch for both 231(Fortran) and 234. He is a pretty good guy, really easy, and has a lot of good stories. You get out early most of the time. And don't waste your money on the book, everything you need is in his notes.

To say it simply, Hutch is the most down to earth teacher I've ever had, he lets you out early, he tells jokes and true stories that happened to him, all at the same time while hes teaching the class. This is the most enjoyable class i'm taking this quarter because of him. He has a very unique sense of sarcastic humor which is awesome. As said before, the quizzes and tests really are straight forward and there are no tricks at all. He is extremely helpful in office hours, and he loves if anyone asks questions in class. Overall I definitely recommend him and I would definitely take him again.

Hutch was a really awesome guy and a good teacher. I got a C in the class at my own fault because i did nothing the second half of the quarter except for my final project. He talks about the material on the quiz right before he gives them so its not hard to do well as long as you listen for five to ten minutes at the end of the period. For all tests he let us have a page of notes, including the final. He was helpful during office hours the few times i went during the first half of the quarter. He is a good teacher and has good stories. His class was entertaining and its not hard to get an A if you put in some effort. He types up all the assignments on his text that he wrote which you pretty much just copy and you're good.

Mark was a great professor. He has a long background in computers so he really knows his stuff well. His lectures got a little confusing at times, but his quizes, tests, and the final were extremely easy and straightforward. He is a really funny guy once you get to know him, especially talking to him one-on-one.

Not a great lecturer, nor a great teacher, he's not really funny either. I got a B and learned NOTHING in this class. He throws a lab manual at you, you change a bit of code and that's the homework. His quizzes and midterm was easy but when it came around to the final he expects you to be able to full on code. I mean, you can't fail the class with him but you can't exactly learn to program when the prof can't teach. But overall, if you just want to get this over with then take him. Guaranteed you will pass without ANY coding knowledge.

He is not a great teacher. He presents the material in a way in which seems that he already expects you to know the basics of programing even though most people in the class had no prior experience. Overall the class is not that bad though, he is somewhat witty and the answers are literally given to you. I never had to open up the book only his lab manual which has all the code for what you need to do (pretty much all you have to do is copy the lab manual).

Hutch was rude to students, and even asked one student to leave class for asking a "dumb question." He clicks his powerpoint faster than I can take notes, let alone pay attention to. By the end of the quarter, the class had loosened up and would regularly laugh at his demands. He belongs on the streets with beggars and thieves, and not in our education system. If you're forced to take his class, look on the bright side, it can only get better from here on out.

Hutch gets a bad rap and it's not entirely deserved. You will get out of this class what you put into it. If you want to skate by and copy his programs out of his lecture textbook, you can do that and probably end up with an A, because he's not a hard teacher at all. If you don't love love love programming, he's not a teacher who will punish you for it, because he really doesn't care. If you want to get way more detailed in your programming, Hutch can help with that too. I was talking to him in class one time about a compiler error I was getting, and he knew just from my description of the error what compiler I was using and what I had done wrong, without seeing any of my code. I'd take him again.

Simple easy... People whine that they don't learn programming in this class but these are aero's, mes, mates, imes....etc There not programming majors nor is this class designed to actually teach them programming. My lab partner and I (both freshmen) had 0 programming experience whatsoever and we both easily passed. If you do all the work which isn't hard considering my lab partner and I finished early every day you will pass. Take Hutch the class is pathetic and extremely easy. He tells funny jokes and shows you some funny mistakes people made (some girl spelled cQuit with a O instead of a Q and her program didn't run...). Hutch is great one of my favorite professors because he knows known of us are programming majors and we really don't care about his class...

I sailed through this class. The homeworks and projects were a piece of cake. I got an A on every project, homework and test, and a B+ average on the quizzes. During dead week, Hutch would come to class for 5 minutes, then tell us all to go fuck ourselves because he hates people and we all are going to fail anyways. I just ignored his rants and taught myself the material, which is pretty easy and straight forward. I know for a fact that I got at least a 90%, if not 100%, on the final because we get a cheat sheet. How did I end up with a B? I have no idea, I am talking with the department chair now. So to summarize, Hutch has a bad attitude and doesn\'t teach, but the class is easy. Just beware, you might not get the grade you deserve.

234 with Hutch isn't too horrible. It sucked that it was early in the morning. The midterm and final were simple because we got to use full sheet of paper cheat sheets. Before quizzes he writes EXACTLY what will be on the quiz and then erases the information right before he passes it out to the class. I didn't do half the homework and still pulled a B. I suggest not asking questions because he probably will make you feel like what you asked was a stupid question. He is funny if you just go with the flow and don't mind a professor who is kind of rude.

Does not know subject material at all. Not very organized. I am still taking the course right now, so I'm not sure of my final grade. This teacher's knowledge of the subject and ability to convey the information is so poor that I also attend Jerome Breitenbach's lectures to actually learn the material for EE 301. Watch out!!
