Dr. Navarro was amazing! The class consists of a group presentation with evaluation, midterm, essay, and final. All are very easy A's if you take the time to do them completely. Her midterm and final are solely based off of the readings, but she will tell you exactly what to study and go over the important points in class. She calls roll every day and your grade will drop after 2 absences, but it is an easy percentage of your grade just for showing up. She is so sweet and willing to help! This class was very interesting and I would take it again in a heartbeat.

Navarro is such a chill teacher. Theres a midterm and a final which both have in-class essays, but she goes over everything that will be covered by the tests the class-meeting before. Theres also a group presentation and two essays, but if you put in some effort on these assignments you will get an A. On top of all of this, she is bomb. It makes coming to class so much easier when you have something nice to look at

Love Navarro. She's really nice, sweet and understanding. It's pretty much impossible to write a bad review about her. Talk to her on the side if things aren't going your way, and she's super accommodating. Easy grader with essays (I've never been a good writer), tells you literally exactly what you need to know on exams, and can talk about Ethnic Studies for days. Downside: Class time is torturously boring, and the material is dry. There is an enormous amount of reading assigned every night. No one ever did it, and she was chill about it. It was a struggle to stay awake sometimes. If you can get through class time, write the essays and study what she tells you to study, easy A. I would definitely take her again.

Dr. Navarro is sucha chill teacher. Besides being down to earth and relatable, she's so smart and knows a lot about her subject. She articulates ideas and concepts in an easy way. Doing the readings will help with in-class discussions, but I never read a single page (just paid attention in class) and was able to ace her midterm and final with ease. She's also a dime!!!

I love Navarro so much; my favorite GE teacher thus far. She used to teach at USC, so that should give you an idea of her caliber. I only wish I had gone to more of her office hours, since she really takes the time to go in depth on the information she gives you (and you are more likely to be engaged).

Dr. Navarro is a good professor and definitely passionate about her subject. However, she doesn't really seem to respect if students don't agree with her opinion. For the first half of the quarter I did all of the readings, but after realizing it did not help for the midterm, I stopped reading for the second half of the quarter. Everything that you need to know for the final and midterm are in the lectures and she posts all of her power points online a week before the test. It is much more efficient to study off of those. If I had known that for the first half of the quarter I might have been able to get an A.

Dr. Navarro is the bomb. She is very well-versed in her subject and she personally relates to the course often. She is a role model for other women and minorities and for Cal Poly students in general. I honestly believe that everyone at Cal Poly should be required to take this class. It teaches you about shocking issues in the world that you probably never knew about, and you'll realize how insane discrimination still is in the USA. Basically, white males rule the world. The material is interesting (and somewhat depressing, but it'll make you a more aware person for sure). For the midterm and final, I HIGHLY suggest going over all of the powerpoints and your notes multiple times until they're stuck in your brain. Also, never underestimate the amount of specific dates that will be on an exam. If you don't know those, it will definitely cost you some points on the midterm and final. I would also recommend office hours!

Dr. Navarro is an intellectual. She is the best professor I have had to date. She is very passionate about her subject and truly wants her students to succeed. She values an opinion in any of her students regardless of their stance. I highly recommend her.

TL;DR Pros - Good teacher and amazing lecturer Cons - tests aren't good, insane amount of reading. Verdict - Take this class with a lower # of units. You will enjoy it more. Keys to success - HIGHLIGHT EVERY SINGLE DATE IN YOUR NOTES! Go on quizlet and utilize the thousands of flash cards already pre-made. ______ Dr. Navarro is a good teacher. She is really clear in her explanations. I enjoyed the lecture and going into detail. The downside is that the lecture is essentially the same stuff as the reading but in more detail. I enjoyed this class during the lecture, but I did not like it outside of lecture. First of all, there is an insane amount of reading which you always have to do because of random 'pop' quizzes worth 20% of your grade. These pop quizzes are more about remembering random dates and less about if you actually know the important concepts. So I would only recommend taking this class if you can dedicate 4 hours of reading a week. I had a really heavy course load along with this class and it was not enjoyable. There is also a "blog" post and a "blog response" assignment. It's essentially a glorified research assignment. Worth 20% of the grade and doesn't take too long.

Dr. Navarro is a passionate, insightful, incredibly intelligent professor and I absolutely loved her class. It is so eyeopening, plus there are no essays or anything just a few multiple choice short quizzes on the reading and a midterm and final.Very straightforward in what she expects! Definitely take this class.

I really enjoyed this class; you really learn a lot about so many injustices of, both present and past, US culture that goes unheard. The class is made up of about 5-6 pop-quizzes (five points each) that total 28% of your grade, and a midterm and final both worth 36% of your grade. Homework amounts to reading for each session; the quizzes are based on the reading and you don't know when they'll be, so you should go to class (but you should be going to class anyways cuz you're paying to be in college and it's a good class to learn a lot). She also doesn't post slides online, so go to class and take notes on those; that info is what she tests on and usually comes straight from the slides. Use quizlets that have been made in the past, they're helpful, but make sure to compare them to your notes to assure it's correct and up-to-date. I would agree with the comments above that you should not underestimate the amount of dates she tests on. Focus on the court cases and time periods (decades) of important events for the dates. I would also agree that this is a great and probably a more enjoyable class to take with a lighter load. There is a good amount of reading and it would've been easy to put it off had I had more work to do this quarter; just stay on top of the reading and take notes on it and you'll be okay! The midterm and final questions are essentially all from lecture material, so I wouldn't worry so much about the reading material for those. I went into the final with a high "A" by just doing what you're supposed to do. The information is not at all hard to grasp, you just have to put in the time to memorize it. As a lecturer, Navarro encourages group discussions which I appreciated since I've been in a lot of classes where the Professor just talks at you the whole time. We talked about relevant events going on today, she let us out 15 minutes early every session, and she's super attractive in my opinion. I would recommend. Good luck!

Truly an incredible example of an inspiring and educated teacher. I immediately looked up what other classes I could take from her. This is a life changing class, and you won't regret taking it. She is so sweet and helpful. Material is dense and there is a lot of reading + pop quizzes - but if you actually read they are easy. This class has shaped me, and I want to thank her for that. Would take this class again.

This class required about 40 pages of reading preparation for each class. Dr. Navarro gave 6 random reading quizzes(28 points total), 1 midterm(36 points) and 1 final(36 points). There is 1 point extra credit on the midterm and final. At the beginning of the course, I didn't do great on the reading quizzes but by the third reading quiz, I started getting full credit. I got 90% on the midterm and finals. This class wasn't a ton of work, pretty easy but the first reading quizzes are why I got a B. Dr. Navarro would sometimes say her opinions as facts which would frustrate me. She also would only use data if it supported her opinion. If it was different than her opinion she would say the data is inaccurate, which was really annoying.

I highly recommend this class and Dr.Navarro. Navarro is extremely passionate about the material which makes the material so much more meaningful. Tests and assignments are extremely fair and she will accommodate for individuals needs. Everyone should take this GE, as it is extremely enlightening and makes you more aware and empathetic to the roles, privileges, and inequities of our society. High school history helps as a foundation, but in this class you see American history through lenses that are not exposed in any basic history class.

Dr. Navarro is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Simply put, she is extremely kind hearted, understanding, patient and overall a brilliant woman. Her class was one of the most interesting ones I have ever had in my life and I loved every minute of it. This subject is always thought of as a "Girls Only Class" but I'm a guy and I found it really insightful. She is a fair grader, tests are wicked easy and the essays are super casual. Honestly, take her if you want to learn something new during your 4 years here at Poly.

Dr. Navarro is the BOMB. She is such a good lecturer and easily engages you in the topic that is covered that day. Class is just a powerpoint lecture, with the occasional quiz based off the previous assigned readings. The readings are easy. There are only 4 quizzes all quarter and 1 midterm. No final. The final is a 4 page paper. You also take a field trip Santa Barbara!! YEEE COLLEGE FIELD TRIPS. Take Navarro she will rock your socks
