Professor Maples is pretty much the most awesome teacher at Poly. She actually makes a really boring subject fun. I enjoyed going to her class because she is pretty funny and jokes with the class. She shows a lot of videos and stuff and has you break them down. There isn't too much reading, so the class is totally doable. She can be a tough grader sometimes, but she lets you rewrite your essays until you get a good grade, plus the first essay is an automatic A! She's always really cool about talking to you and answering questions until you understand something. If you have the chance, take her class!!! You will not regret the decision!

Professor Maples is the best english teacher I have ever had. She truly knows her subject and cares deeply about her students. I considered myself an okay writer before her class, having taken AP courses in high school, however Professor Maples really challenged me in creative writing, critical thinking and understanding prose. The essay topics were very interesting to research and write and the class itself was really enjoyable, fun and thought provoking. On another note, Professor Maple's class not only grew as a writer, but as a person. She challenged me to look at the world differently and to imprint my soul and it's creativity into my writing. Please take this class with Professor Maples if you have the opportunity to--you will not regret it.

Maples is literally the best teacher on campus. I have absolutely hated English since freshman year of high school. However, Maples made English exciting and fun. She is always extremely encouraging and offers specific constructive criticism. She is a very very generous grader and the entire goal of her class is for you not only to succeed, but to thrive. She's absolutely hilarious and makes class extremely fun. Everything is full of participation. By the end of the quarter our entire class was extremely close and we even have a class photo together. As for the actual work, Maples allows you to revise any paper twice in order to try and get a better grade on it. The lowest grade I got on a paper was a B, which I got up to an A- after a revision. There is very little homework besides the 3 papers and media project due and Maples tries to make it all in class work. I can't say enough about what a great teacher Maples is, if you gotta take English 134 you need to take her. Her class was the only class I did not miss all year because I loved being there.

Let me start by saying I'm not usually one to like english. Im actually a bio major and english is generally boring to me, but Rebekah Maples is such a fantastic teacher that this ended up being my favorite class so far at Poly. there were no tests or quizzes, just writing assignments (kind of lengthy ones) and short (easy) presentations/projects. On the papers you turn in, She grades kind of hard, however; she gives reeeeally helpful feedback as to what you need to improve on and you have an opportunity to revise all your major papers. I would have gotten a B in the class had I not revised my papers, so take advantage of that opportunity! She is the most understanding, down-to-earth teacher I've met here so far. She understands you have a personal life outside of school and is willing to work with you in virtually every situation. She is also super funny and makes the class fun, even if you don't generally like English like me. Hands down a fair, fantastic and fun teacher.

Mrs. Maples is a very funny and relate-able teacher. She understands her students very well and responds to their needs well. The class has 4 major writing assignments that determine a huge chunk of your grade, however you can revise them twice and she gives good feedback. I normally don't enjoy English but she definitely made the class one of my favorites this quarter.

Professor Maples is an excellent professor. I have always hated English and this was the only English class I have enjoyed. It is a very reasonable workload and she had made me a noticeably better writer. If you take your time to write focussed essays you will earn your desired grade. Take Maples!!

I love Professor Maples! She is so funny and nice and I loved just talking to her in general. There's a lot of reading quizzes without warning, so make sure you stay on top of the readings each night (they're not that long anyhow). She's a fair grader when it comes to essays and is always willing to look over your paper before you turn it in if you need some guidance. No midterms or finals, just essays. There's a final project that goes along with the last essay you'll write, and you have a choice of an art project, poetry, a media project, and a couple other options. I did a media project and it was actually kinda fun. Even if you don't like writing essays I'm sure Maples will be great professor for you :)

She is a great professor. Hands down one of the most fun teachers I've ever had which is impressive considering the class. She's funny, goes on tangents fairly easily (I'd highly recommend it), and willing to work with you. I was a fairly active participant, not always in a productive way, and she really vibes off of a responsive class. tl;dr: fun pretty straightforward professor take her if you can

Professor Maples is by far my favorite professor at Cal Poly. She's so funny and nice and the class is fairly easy. Your grade is basically 2 essays (which you can revise and get a better grade on) a group presentation, and a solo project. This class was super chill and I loved going to it. Highly recommend taking her class!!

I absolutely love Rebekah Maples. Her class was amazing, and she is amazing. Take her if you can, because no other teacher in this school will be as awesome as she is. I am an engineering major, but this English 134 class was by far my favorite out of all my classes, simply because of how Professor Maples handled the class. She's also young, so that may make her more relatable. (We watched a music video from Frozen and analyzed it as a class.) 6-8pm on Tues/Thurs was not ideal, but she understands that and is very sympathetic with her students, and we often got out of class a few minutes early, and on the first day we were only in class for half an hour. There are only 3 major grades, and no final. The only textbook we used was Fresh Voices, which wasn't that great, but you definitely want to buy it and read for her class, because we had 3 or 4 really short reading quizzes that were basically just to make sure you were doing your work, and easy points if you read. You can revise each of your essays to improve your grade, and with the revision you can go all the way up to an A, no matter what you got before. She isn't a harsh grader, and she emphasizes the use of rhetorical devices in your works. Overall, she encourages you to try new things with your writing, don't be boring or afraid of trying something unique, she wants to see your original writing style. I feel like I learned a lot from her, and I wish that every professor at Cal Poly cared as much about the students as she does. Thanks for a great first quarter Rebekah! Tl;dr: Take Maples. She's a great teacher and she cares a lot about each of her students and wants you to do well. Best English professor at Cal Poly, and a great person.

Maples is awesome! Her class is actually interesting and she does a really good job of preparing you for the essays. There were only really two big essays and a final project. I'm an engineer so I was dreading english, plus I took this class at 7 pm, but I kinda liked going! TAKE HER CLASS IF YOU CAN!!!

If you can manage to get into Maples' class then do it. Honestly it's probably worth crashing. She is a young teacher who doesn't try to be "cool and relatable", she just is. Her class felt like a funny back and forth conversation with a friend, yet I actually feel like I learned a lot about structuring essays and arguments. She made English 134 a painless experience--even for a science major. 10/10 would recommend.

Best English teacher ever. I hate English, it's one of my worst subjects and when I got told it was an 8-10 p.m. class I about died. Even though it was super late and English, she still made it super fun and understandable. She uses current media to display different rhetorical devices and explains English on a simpler level. Professor Maples will also help you correct your essay if you go into office hours and she will tell you what to change in order to get an A. I would 100% recommend her to anyone. TAKE PROFESSOR MAPLES!!!!!

LOVED MAPLES. Take her. I had an 8pm to 10pm class with her unfortunately, but I totally didn't mind because she's so awesome. There are three essays, and the final is just revising the last essay, so that's chill. I would say that she's a pretty fair (and maybe a little generous?) grader. Not only did I easily pass, but I learned so much! Amazing writing teacher and I felt I improved under her eye.

Maples has been my favorite prof on campus so far. I learned so much and going to office hours really helped. There are 3 essays, no midterm or final. Make sure to do the readings since there are pop quizzes.

Professor Maples is the best professor/teacher/educator I have ever had in my life. She made a GE that many people would be opposed to taking enjoyable, interesting, and fun. I never missed a class and I feel like I really bonded with her as a person. She had a few pop quizzes throughout the quarter that were based on some minor readings. They are simple as long as you do the reading! Also, we wrote three essays, and our last essay (technically 4th) was correcting our third essay. There was no final, and we didn't even have to show up for the final date. That was simply the due date of our final essay. Additionally, Maples is extremely helpful. I talked to her for literally 5 minutes during her office hours and go incredible feedback on how to improve my essay. She really cares about her students' well-being and success. An incredible person and professor. Her class is a must-take.

This is an example of an excellent GE professor at Cal Poly. She is one of the rare ones. Professor Maples is a very kind lady who is extremely interested in her students' development, growth and ENJOYMENT of her class. Usually I suffer from those nitwit professors who take it upon themselves to have more B's & C's in the class just to make their department happy. Thankfully she hasn't been pressured into doing that yet. She is extremely easy to work with and very conscientious of students' difficulties. And she really tries to make sure you understand. Tip to getting an A: DO NOT COAST in the class. Do the readings. You never know when there might be a reading quiz. Yeah, they are boring but do it anyway. You will write two essays and a research paper. You can redo one of the papers for a better grade, but only one paper is available for a redo. I doubt you'll need it unless you reaaaalllly don't like/aren't a good writer. Take Maples, especially if you have a heavy course load. And don't leave a review about how "EASY" she is...it will only hurt her chances of remaining here. The grades you assign her speak volumes enough for other students!
